STERLING | RIVERFRONT ECOTOURISM PROJECT
From brownfield to green space
One year later, project starting to take shape BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – It’s been nearly a year since bids were put out for work on the city’s riverfront ecotourism project, and the transformation of a blighted indus-
trial property is becoming evident. Project Manager Jens Jensen, owner of Jensen Ecology, recapped the progress at Monday’s council meeting. After working at a frenetic pace the past few weeks, the project is on pause. Most of the work has been done on the east side of the Northwestern Steel
& Wire Co. site, because ComEd is still doing remediation work on the west side. “We haven’t been able to access the west side yet, and ComEd says it probably won’t be available to us until early December,” Jensen said. GREEN SPACE CONTINUED ON A5

A cloud of smoke drifts across neighboring farmland Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in the fluff pile – a pile of shredded car seats and the like – at Cimco Recycling, 13509 Galt Road in Sterling. The fire started around 4:20 p.m., and Sterling and Rock Falls firefighters were curling up the hoses and had everything under control by 7 p.m. Chief Gary Cook said the cause is thought to be a mechanical failure on the conveyor system. Workers had tried to put out the fire on one of the conveyors, but it ignited the nearby pile of residue. The blaze spread to the interior of the building, but firefighters were able to quickly put it out.
Weather, rut, farm equipment combine for perfect storm BY SHAW MEDIA AND THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Farmers, fires and four-footed fiends in a fever: The fall can be a dicey time for drivers, safety-wise. Not only is it harvest time, meaning time to keep a patient eye out for slow-moving, widebodied farm equipment on the roads, but now through the end of December also is deer-rutting season, a time of year when the number of hot-to-trot whitetails colliding with vehicles spikes. And, while it may be a wee bit too soon to add trick-or-treaters to the list of road hazards, there is yet another fall safety concern: field and other fire danger. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning Monday morning for all of northern Illinois because of strong winds, dry conditions, and low humidity. According to the NWS website: “A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will contribute to extreme fire behavior.” SEASON CONTINUED ON A4

DIXON – Open Sesame Children’s Learning Center is poised to buy Lincoln Elementary School for $501, to permanently house its after-school and summer programs. The Dixon School Board will vote Wednesday to approve the sale. The school was closed after the 2013-14 school year to save money. Open Sesame, which already leased space in the building, approached the district about buying it. In September, the school board voted to sell it for a minimum of $500. Open Sesame was the only bidder. “When the board decided to put the school up for sale, we knew what we had to do,” said Darla Foulker, co-president of the Open Sesame board of directors. Dick Little of Oregon takes a walk along the path near Oregon West Park on a breezy Monday afternoon. “At least I’ve got a good tail wind,” Little said, laughing, after taking a short break on his journey. The next couple of days will be stroll-friendly – most of the time. Highs are predicted in the upper-70s for today and Wednesday, but some showers could be in the mix. See the 5-day forecast on A3.
