ELECTION 2015 | DIXON MAYOR’S RACE
Considine, Kuhn might run Both pick up paperwork for commissioner, mayor races BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – The April 7 mayoral election might get crowded. Mayor Jim Burke recently reaffirmed that he will likely seek
re-election to a fifth term. Local businessman Liandro Arellano Jr., who said last month that he would seek the office, has picked up a petition. And as of Tuesday morning, Commissioners Jeff Kuhn and
Dennis Considine also have picked up petitions – for both the mayor and the commissioner races. Considine and Kuhn said they want to keep their options open and will decide which petition
to file before the Dec. 22 deadline. The result of the Nov. 4 referendum on the form of city government will play a factor, they said. MAYOR CONTINUED ON A4

Harkness acquires dealership Retains all 25 Bemis employees BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570
OREGON – Pete Harkness Auto Group has established a presence in Ogle County. The Brian Bemis Auto Mall, 601 Gale St. in Oregon, officially became Pete Harkness of Oregon on Tuesday. The deal for Harkness to buy the dealership had been in the works for quite a while, and the signage was being prepared for the ownership change last week. Harkness now has a used vehicle lot in Rock Falls, and five new vehicle dealerships – two in Sterling, and one in Oregon, Morrison, and Centerville, Iowa. He said he is excited by how good of a strategic fit the Oregon site is. “This gives us a presence in the Rock River Valley and fits well with our footprint,” Harkness said. “We try to space out a geographic path for our customers.”

Al Dir discusses his postcard collection Tuesday at his Sterling home. Dir has collected 39 postcards with local ties, including two (below) sent to the same Boston address in 1920.
Age-old postcards sent to same Boston address join collection BY ANGEL SIERRA asierra@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5695
STERLING – Some people collect baseball cards. Others seek out rare antiques. Allen Dir is on a mission to find postcards – of the local variety. Although he’s always considered himself a history buff, it was only after getting lucky by winning $1,000 from a lottery ticket in May that he finally decided to spend some of it on a hobby. Dir, 41, hunts for local postcards of a bygone era on eBay by searching for the phrase “Sterling, Illinois postcards.” He tries to keep his bids to about $5 apiece, including shipping. Friday, he was surprised to see two of his most recent treasures – one from Indiana and the other from Tennessee – arrive at his home on the same day. The oddity: They were sent on the same day to an address in Boston almost 100 years ago.
