SERVING ROCK FALLS, STERLING AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1854

WHITESIDE COUNTY | HIGH-SPEED CHASE UPDATE

Firing of weapon ‘permissible’ State’s attorney says charges not warranted for deputy, who’s back on job BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521

CAMBRIDGE – The state’s attorney in Henry County says charges are not warranted for the Whiteside County

sheriff’s deputy who fired his weapon during a recent highspeed chase south of Rock Falls. The deputy, who has been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 21, is back on the

job today. His name has not been released. After the Illinois State Police completed their investigation, Henry County State’s Attorney Terence Patton was

appointed as a special prosecutor to avoid the conflict of interest that would have been inherent, should Whiteside County State’s Attorney Trish Joyce have handled the matter.

In an email to Sauk Valley Media on Thursday afternoon, Patton detailed his reasoning behind his decision on the Aug. 20 shooting. PERMISSIBLE CONTINUED ON A4
