New zoning code goes to council Clarity, consistency main objectives during year and a half of revisions BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – The Plan Commission, after 18 months of work, unanimously gave its recommendation to a new zoning code and map.
A public hearing was held Thursday, and Dustin Wolff, the city’s planning consultant, presented an overview of the 276page document. The council will vote on the resolution backing the new code on Oct. 5. The 43-year-old code was starting to frustrate a wider
group of people, whether it was developers, business owners, or homeowners. “The current code tried to paint too many properties with one brush,” Wolff said. “There are over 5,000 properties in the community, so this one isn’t perfect, but it’s much better.”
Wolff led the rewrite project, working closely with Building and Zoning Administrator Amanda Schmidt and City Manager Scott Shumard. Schmidt said one of her main goals during the project was to bring more consistency to the code.
“When I think back on the number of amendments we’ve made over the last few years, it shows just how much we needed this,” Schmidt said. “People constantly had to come before this commission to make things work.” ZONING CONTINUED ON A4

MORRISON – A public forum will be held Thursday on a proactive plan for severe weather that’s being formed for Whiteside County, and public input is sought. Countywide input is sought for the Whiteside County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan, which will include projects to prevent injuries, deaths, and property damage from major storms and other severe weather. “The purpose of the public forum is for interested citizens to discuss the plan or ask questions with committee members present,” said Seth Janssen, the county’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency coordinator.

An indicator of progress was the absence of the usual hot button topics: Crundwell, Seventh Street, and transparency. “To me, it shows the community must feel most things are running pretty well,” Councilman Christopher Bishop said. “I know we’re dealing with details, but to me, that’s a great thing to be talking about.” City leaders weren’t sure what to expect heading in to the meeting at
