STERLING | ZONING CODE
Officials think they cracked code After a year and a half of fine-tuning, commission will present final draft Thursday BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – A new zoning code is ready for public review after a year and a half of work by the city’s Plan Commission. The final draft will be presented during a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall, 212
Third Ave. The regular Plan Commission meeting will be held after the hearing. City officials had wrestled with the 43-year-old code, which was considered by most a hindrance to development rather than a guide. “The current and now antiquated code has had countless modifications, amendments, and ‘Band-Aids’ made to it over the years, but the complexity
of the current code no longer meets the needs of the city of Sterling,” officials said in a letter sent out last week by Sterling Main Street. The city had reached out to the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater Sterling Development Corp. and Main Street for their input from the beginning of the process.

ABOVE: Jersey Schmidt, 8, of Rock Falls puts whiskers on her Hello Kitty artwork Saturday afternoon during the 21st annual Paint the Town in downtown Morrison. The event brings in thousands of people and adds a touch of color to Main Street. It followed the Harvest Hammer 5K Run/Walk and 21-mile bike ride, as well as a color run. While the youngsters painted, magicians, musicians and artists added their own flair to the event. Click on this photo at saukvalley.com to see video from the event.
