DIXON – Dixon native Ryan Wulf has gone from riding handcuffed in the back of police cars to fixing them. Nine months ago, Wulf, 26, stopped using heroin. Today, he spends his time as an auto mechanic on Chicago’s South Side. “It’s wild to talk about how far I’ve come,” Wulf said. Wulf was one of about 60 people who participated in the Overdose Awareness Memorial Walk on Saturday evening in Dixon. “The purpose of the walk is to bring awareness and educate people about the signs and symptoms of overdose,” said Greg O’Brien, a member of Safe Harbor of Lee County, the group that put on the event. “We also want to reflect and remember those who have lost their lives to overdoses.”

DIXON – This would be a tragedy were it not for the heady reactions of a local teen. Instead, it’s a story of merit. And Jared Brauman, 17, credits his Boy Scouts training for making it that way. And for that, this month, the Boy Scouts of America rewarded Brauman with one of its highest honors – the Medal of Merit, given to one who, according to the award criteria, performs an act of “exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.”
