Entrepreneur contest planned Competition’s format will be similar to popular TV show ‘Shark Tank’ BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
MORRISON – It’s time for budding entrepreneurs to chase their dreams. Fast Pitch competitions are becoming increasingly popular nationwide. Similar to the popular television show “Shark Tank,” the contests give competitors a chance to pitch their
business ideas to a panel of experts who can help make their dream of business ownership a reality. The Morrison Area Development Corp. is partnering with the Small Business Development Center at Black Hawk College in Moline to bring Fast Pitch to Morrison. Kim Ewoldsen, MADC executive director, first pitched the idea to the board, and it was well received.
“They liked the idea, and one of the board members put me in touch with Joel Youngs at Black Hawk, who had been involved with a similar event for Henry and Stark counties,” Ewoldsen said. The contest is open to startups and businesses that have been open for fewer than 18 months. ENTREPRENEUR CONTINUED ON A2

SUBLETTE – A little more than 2 months after an EF-2 tornado ripped through the southern portion of the Woodhaven Lakes campground, more than $500,000 has been spent on recovery efforts. In the storm, 900 properties were damaged, and 1,400 lots received tree damage, the Woodhaven Lakes Association reported. No one was seriously injured during the storm, although it displaced many. Residents who weren’t in the campground at the time of the storm weren’t allowed on to their property until

crete bathhouses scattered throughout the campground. “They’re the safest structures on the grounds,” one longtime resident said the next morning. Immediately, first responders, and locals who lived outside the campgrounds started flooding in, searching through the wreckage and making sure everyone was OK. It’s because of emergency situations like this, and ones the county hasn’t yet faced, that Kevin Lalley, director of the Lee County Emergency Management Association, has his sights set on acquiring a 26-foot-long trailer that would serve as a mobile command post. STERLING – What would have been the 11th annual Northwestern Illinois Farm Show has been canceled. The agribusiness committee at the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, along with the Whiteside County Farm Bureau, announced the decision Wednesday. The Sterling Park District is also a sponsor of the event that is held at the Westwood Fitness & Sports Center. Last year’s event was held the weekend of Dec. 12 and 13. The chamber said several factors led to the decision to take a break, but the bottom line was declining attendance. “Last year, we made it free, and attendance was still down,” chamber Director Kris Noble said. “The larger vendors just didn’t know if it was good use of their time and resources.” FARM CONTINUED ON A3
