WEEKEND ENTERPRISE | HEALTH CARE IN THE SAUK VALLEY

Making caregiving an art Nursing homes bring new Alzheimer’s care methods to area BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521 @SeaWarren

For families

By 2050, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease is going to reach 13.5 million, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s the sixth-leading cause of death in America, and it’s the only one of the top 10 causes without any way to prevent, cure, or even slow its progression. But that doesn’t mean nursing homes in the Sauk Valley aren’t trying. Nancy Sweitzer, program director for the Central Illinois chapter

The Alzheimer’s Association hosts regular classes for family members of people with Alzheimer’s to help them learn more about the disease, and the best care techniques. For a schedule of upcoming events, call the Dixon office, 93 S. Hennepin Ave., at 815-2851100. of the Alzheimer’s Association, said that the best types of treatments are those that keep patients engaged. “[That is] the best treatment that we can hope for because it

helps reduce anxiety and helps reduce negative behavior,” she said. “Finding out exactly what that person did in the past and how you can incorporate those past passions, hobbies, skills, and interests can make them come alive again.” The Montessori method of care is one of the best ways to do that, though only two care facilities in the Sauk Valley area offer it: Liberty Court, in Dixon; and Morningside, formerly known as Good Neighbor Care, in Sterling, which opens its 30-bed memory care wing on Monday.
