Kenny Secton and Scot Beyer of the Sterling Public Works Department clear tree limbs Wednesday afternoon along West 12th Street. The city will pick up storm-related yard waste starting Monday on the west side of town. Residents are asked to place yard waste at the curb in front of their homes. They need not cut branches into 4-foot lengths for this special cleanup only. Yard waste also can be dropped off Monday at the Public Works garage, 1605 Ave. L. Regular yard waste not related to the storm – grass clippings, leaves, and weeds – should be added to the regularly scheduled pickup.

600 STILL WITHOUT POWER STERLING – Ninetynine percent of Commonwealth Edison customers who were without power because of Monday night’s storm have power once again. Of the 61,000 customers across the state who lost power, just 600 remain powerless, with the largest concentration of those customers being in Coal City, said Annette Martinez, a ComEd representative, Wednesday night. “We could only restore service to those whose houses could be reconnected,” she said.
DIXON | SEVENTH STREET REPAIRS
Is project urgent enough? Council says yes, agrees to bypass bidding process BY BRENDEN WEST bwest@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529 @BWest_SVM
DIXON – Before the Dixon Council approved emergency funding for West Seventh Street on Wednesday, the project was almost set back altogether. After making alterations to the original proposed plans, some on the council didn’t feel comfortable “opening up the wallet” on a project that doesn’t have an estimated dollar amount tied to it. Councilmen Mitch Tucker and Mike Venier both were leery of setting a $1 million funding threshold to fix what is essentially a miniature canyon left in the wake of the June 15 flood. They want to see all of the expenses associated with the fix before signing off. And at one point, Finance Director Paula Meyer said the council should reconsider, slowing down reconstruction through a formal bidding process, even though she had drafted the very resolution councilmen were weighing. “With all of the concerns that I’m hearing, I’m not sure that we want to do this this way,” Meyer said. “If you waive bidding, we’re not going to be bringing all of the [estimates] here.” URGENT CONTINUED ON A2
