The roof over Dunham’s Sports at Northland Mall in Sterling rests in pieces Monday evening after a nasty storm ripped through Whiteside County. No one was injured, but among other precautions, officers had to secure the store’s firearms. The Sterling Police Department said the mall will be closed until further notice and requests the public steers clear of the mall, in the interest of safety.

STERLING – All hell broke loose again Monday, exactly 1 week after the last big storm swept through the Sauk Valley. A trained weather spotter sighted a tornado touching down at 8:07 p.m. at Woodhaven Lakes in Sublette, in Lee County, the
National Weather Service said. At 10 p.m., Lee County Sheriff’s deputies, Sheriff John Simonton, area firefighters, and other emergency workers from 10 agencies were in Woodhaven, searching for any injured. There was much flooding, and many trees down, some that fell on association homes. At the time, no injured had been found, but there were reports of injuries coming in, Simonton said. Woodhaven is a private camping resort at 507 La Moille Road, 3 miles west of U.S. Route 52, with hundreds of lots. Around 10:45 p.m., the Woodhaven Association posted on its Facebook page
that the Weather Service had not determined the strength of the twister. It asked people to refrain from calling or coming out to the campground to help, “to allow emergency workers full access to phones and roads.” “Thanks for your understanding and patience. We will try to keep you as informed as possible as we continue to assess damages.” Workers were scrambling to remove the downed trees, to find the injured and make way for ambulances, and also were going door to door, checking on residents. spent Sunday gathering warm fuzzies. Phone calls, text messages, emails, Facebook posts – you name the method. So many folks wanted to tell me I’m a good dad. For about 5 minutes Monday evening, I did my best to disprove the warm sentiments. Moments after sending a text alert for the tornado warning for Whiteside County, I sprinted to my car and zipped home. We’ve got a lovely home, but no basement. Just a crawl space. So I called my neighbor, Andy Terveer, to see if he had room in his basement. Sure, it’s decked out in Chicago Bears and Cubs and Fighting Illini decor, but I was able to look past that minor inconvenience. SMARTER CONTINUED ON A9

Time for the main distraction Water pipe hit during work on West First Street sewer line BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
ROCK FALLS – City sewer problems continued over the weekend with a line blockage at West First Street near First Avenue. The new sewer issue came up just as the Public Works Department barely had time to catch its collective breath from last week’s flooding of the main lift station.

The dredge report Even before Monday’s storm, rainfall had the Thomas Park pond dredging project behind schedule. More on A3. The city received a call Thursday about a sewer backup at VFW Post 5418, 217 First Ave. While digging to gain access to the sewer line Thursday and Friday, a water main was hit, causing the area to fill with water.

Based on available mapping information about local infrastructure, the water problem came as a surprise. “The sewer line is about 20 feet down, and according to our maps, that water main wasn’t in use,” Water Superintendent Ted Padilla said. “But about 5 feet in, we found out otherwise.” The water had to be pumped out before the sewer main work continued.
