Jail not at fault in death Investigator: State standards not violated in release of Janet Sims BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5535 @KathleenSchul10
Janet Sims was found dead in a Morrison cemetery on Nov. 26, 2014, 2 days after being released from the nearby Whiteside County Jail.
MORRISON – An investigator found state jail release standards were not violated when an inmate died in a snowstorm the day she was freed from Whiteside County Jail in November. Janet Fay Sims was released Nov. 24 after serving 5 days of a 10-day sentence for trespass. She left the jail during the first bliz-

result of Sims’ death. “As far as we’re concerned, the investigation is over,” Wilhelmi said in an interview on Jan. 9. “It’s a situation where we let [someone] out of jail, and unfortunately, this is what transpired.” Sue Britt, chairwoman of the county’s Public Safety Committee, which oversees the Sheriff’s Department, said Friday that the County Board had not discussed the Sims incident. Dixon in Bloom committee member Robin Canode is president of the Rock River Garden Club. Canode and other committee members are concerned that the city government might not come through on its commitment of $9,500 to expand the annual petunia project in Dixon. “Do you want to be the petunia capital of the world or not? If you do, you’ve got to step up and be part of the process,” Canode said.

STERLING – It’s been 3 years now since Sam Munz died. It was a Tuesday, June 4, 2012, right around 7:45 p.m., and Munz, 53, was finishing a ride on his 1999 Santee motorcycle, westbound on state Route 40 in rural Sterling. He stopped to make a left turn into his driveway when, all of a sudden, he was rear-ended by an SUV, police say. He died that night at CGH Medical Center. His wife, Vicky Munz, now 52, was baby-sitting her granddaughters that evening when they heard the sirens. Her younger granddaughter was asleep in a crib; Vicky and her older granddaughter were lying together in another bedroom, watching a movie. FAMILY CONTINUED ON A2
