DIXON | CRUNDWELL RECOVERY FUNDS

Groups to appeal repeal Main Street’s $22K allotment, nearly $8K for Tourism in question BY BRENDEN WEST bwest@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529 @BWest_SVM

DIXON – Organizations subject to the Dixon Council’s funding repeal plan to state their cases. While discussing the city budget during a special meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Li Arellano Jr. reiterated that smart use of proceeds received from the Rita Crundwell would be for one-time expenses. Thus, he disagreed with several April approvals by the former council allocating proceeds for Christmas decorations, boat docks and The Next Picture Show, Sister Cities, Dixon Tourism and Main Street groups. When the council reconvenes on June 1,

there will be a resolution to repeal those budget items – totaling $110,745. Giana Bonneur, executive director of Main Street, was not present for Tuesday’s meeting, stating on Wednesday that she was unaware her organization’s recent funding increase was potentially on the hook. While Main Street has not spent its $22,000 Crundwell allotment,

Bonneur said she had earmarked the funds to step up Main Street’s marketing this year. “It affects amenity expenses,” Bonneur said. “That $22,000 was really focused on strong advertising campaigns.” She added that she presented to the former council Main Street’s 2015 objectives, which she said eventually led to approval of Crundwell dollars. Bonneur plans to show the new council the same presentation in hopes that she can recover some of the dollars. “It’s understandable that they’re going to review any expenditures,” Bonneur said. “I was hoping [to use them], but I understand why [there might be a repeal].”

Harvey Temple (below) of Rock Falls is converting a portion of the old Sterling Christian Academy, 5505 Ann. St., Galt, into an auction house. The first auction will be at 11 a.m. Saturday.

$1.00

DIXON – The United States District Court ruled on Tuesday that former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell will forfeit a number of her remaining assets – trophies, awards, horse show clothes and miscellaneous household goods. Those items will eventually be auctioned off, their proceeds given to the city of Dixon as restitution for the largest embezzlement in United States history. But the justice system isn’t yet satisfied.

GALT

GALT – Another auction is planned at the former Sauk Valley Christian Academy building, but the circumstances are different this time. After the school at 5505 Anne St. in Galt closed in December 2012, it was put up for sale, and its contents were auctioned off. Starting Saturday, auctions will be held at the building on a regular basis. Harvey Temple of Rock Falls is leasing space there for his new enterprise, Harvey’s Auction Service. The auctions will be held every other Saturday in the parking lot area. They will begin at 11 a.m., but Temple said customers can come in to browse as early as 8 a.m. He also keeps regular hours – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The frequency of the auctions could change, depending on how many items he has on hand. He brings some things in from other sales, but most of his items are dropped off by local residents. No money changes hands until an item is sold, and Temple gets 25 percent of the sale price.

Govt. still after assets

hey were all there in that room on the second floor of the hospital. Everyone accounted for. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, addicts in recovery. I stepped into the elevator at KSB Hospital just before 7 p.m., following behind a blond woman. She smiled at me as we rode up. Up to learn how to save people from killing themselves. Up to learn how heroin usage alters the chemicals in the brain. Up. Smile. I’ve been covering heroin addiction in Lee County for quite a while. The first time I remember talking to an addict for a story was about a year ago at the police department in Dixon. CAVEATS CONTINUED ON A7

STERLING

Temple thinks an auction house can be successful in Sterling, with the closest one being in Dixon. But he’s going in with guarded optimism, hosting an auction every other Saturday. “I’m just saying every 2 weeks until I get a feel for how it’s going to go,” he said.

Make a bid The first public sale at Harvey’s Auction House, 5505 Anne St. in Galt, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. Call owner Harvey Temple at 815-213-0193 for more information.
