Worried about its Best interests
Officials concerned about city property that’s not only a potential hazard, but a roadblock to redevelopment BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – The city is mulling its options for dealing with a troublesome building it inherited at the Northwestern Steel & Wire site. Gaining control of the mill site enabled
the city to pursue grants and move ahead with cleanup and redevelopment of the area, but ownership has its downside. The city rents a building at the site to Best Cob, a corn cob processor, at 8681 Hickory Hills Road in Rock Falls. Sterling receives $96,450 a year for leasing the building to Best Cob. That rent is the
only revenue still coming into the city’s NS&W bankruptcy settlement fund. The building is a problem for several reasons, none of which can be easily solved. Some of the issues are concerns for the city’s building code department. During a February budget meeting, Building and Zoning Administrator
Amanda Schmidt told the council that her department doesn’t want the building occupied. “There are no restrooms, and you’d have to go into a burning building to turn on the water because it’s a dry system,” Schmidt said. BUILDING continued on A44

A good day to let things slide Emma Landis, 9, (above) of Sterling soaks it all in Thursday as she lies at the end of her Aqua Drench Park at her family’s home. Emma rolled out the inflatable toys and broke them in with her sister, Izzy Larson, 8, (right) as the temperatures reached into the upper 80s and the two had fun in the sun.

ROCK FALLS – Several projects are underway at Centennial Park, some that should be completed for the Memorial Day crowd. Coloma Township Park District workers have been busy making a big push to get amenities in place for the influx of holiday visitors. Work on new fountains is wrapping up, Parks Director Mike Sterba said. “Three large fountains are being put in at the south end of the park, and another one will be put up at the entrance,” Sterba said. “Our goal is to have all of them up by Memorial Day.” A lighting project planned for about 4 years also is underway. New LED fixtures are being put on the poles, replacing 52 of them that date back to 1968. The project had been delayed until money could be found in the capital development fund. “Just the fixtures cost $80,000 – that doesn’t include labor,” Sterba said. “We’ll be good for another 40 years, though, with these.” The biggest Centennial Park project, however, will extend far beyond the holiday weekend. In 2014, the park district acquired 4.3 acres of land that has been added at the southwest corner of the park. PARK continued on A124
