ROCK FALLS | RIVERFRONT PROJECT
The latest development: An option The door’s been opened for a land deal; now a city group has 180 days to walk through it BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
ROCK FALLS – The document has been tweaked by the
city attorney, but the Industrial Development Commission took the first step in trying to nail down a new riverfront development project. At a special meeting of the IDC Thursday, an agreement
was approved giving the Rock Falls Community Development Corp. an option to purchase the land from the city at a cost of $50,000. The development group drew up a document that the IDC
had looked at last Thursday, but a vote was delayed because several city officials were out of town. In the meantime, City Attorney Jim Reese drew up a new option-to-purchase agreement

that replaced the previous letter of intent to purchase. The development group has 180 days to exercise its option and close the deal. ROCK FALLS CONTINUED ON A4

DIXON – In an effort to both alleviate congestion and make Page Park safer, the Dixon Park District is making some changes. Some parking spots have been taken away – but some have been added too. While park board commissioners acknowledged this will inconvenience some visitors to the Al Morrison Youth Baseball Complex, they say the changes are positive and warranted.
Starting today, park visitors will no longer be able to park along Plum Creek. To compensate, the board has striped the basketball court for 36 parking spots. In a May 4 letter to the complex’s directors, the board cited as one of the main reasons for the change, “the danger of children and adults crossing the road at numerous places as opposed to being on the complex side as they exit their vehicles.” They also said erosion along Plum Creek makes parking along it “unsafe.” PARKING CONTINUED ON A4
ROCK FALLS – The Hennepin Canal and Trails Committee agreed Thursday to send plans for the Storybook Trail project to the council for its approval. The idea for the project came from the University of Illinois Extension Service’s local office. Books with nature themes suitable for young children would be chosen for the trail. Sixteen storybook markers with 32 13-by-15 pages would be put up on posts. New books would be brought in four or five times a year. Mary Nelson, an Extension program coordinator in Morrison, learned of the Storybook Trail concept from a colleague who heard about it at a conference. “When I heard about the idea, as coordinator of the Master Naturalist program, I thought it would work well for us,” Nelson said. “Kids don’t spend enough time outdoors, and the Storybook Trail is a great way to get families out in nature together.”
