ROCK FALLS – The city’s economic development arm has set plans in motion to buy riverfront property for a project being pursued near the
Reliant building, of which only a large concrete slab and basement remain. The other lot, about 1.3 acres, is the parking area directly behind the slab and surrounding space. RFCDC Executive Director Randy Balk presented copies of the pur-
chase agreement to members of the city’s Industrial Development Commission on Thursday. The new marketing agreement between the city and RFCDC allows the development group to purchase city property for development projects.

Off to Neverland ABOVE: Meghan VanBuren, as Tinkerbell, rehearses a musical number with the chorus Wednesday afternoon for Faith Christian School’s “Peter Pan Jr.” The musical will open Friday night at the school in Grand Detour at 6:30 p.m. with a matinee Saturday at 2:30 p.m. $10 at the door. LEFT: Gabby Rydzynsk, as Wendy, and Jericho Kirby, as Peter Pan, rehearse a scene from “Peter Pan Jr.”
DIXON – Wednesday night’s public forum about heroin was just the first step for PRISM of Lee County organizers. The next step: Mobilizing the volunteers who signed up to help the group, and reaching out to parents who took their own first step Wednesday, asking for support. The group, formerly called the Lee County Anti-Heroin Task Force, has revamped its image and its name (PRISM stands for Prevention, Recovery, and Information on Substance abuse and Mental health). Its presentation at the Dixon Elks Lodge drew a crowd of 200. During that event, Cathy Ferguson, administrator of the Lee County Health Department, invited anyone interested in volunteering or joining a support group for parents of addicts to leave their contact information. She said about 30 people signed up to volunteer, and about 10 parents said they’d be interested in joining a support group. Those interested should call the health department at 815-284-3371. The event evolved into more than just an information session about heroin and its hold on Lee County. It became a discussion about bringing an issue that is so often pushed into the dark corners of society out into the light: addiction, and overcoming the stigma that accompanies it. One of the speakers, Stephanie H., spoke to that, and about her son who is in jail and detoxing from his heroin abuse. HEROIN CONTINUED ON A10
