Lee County 4-H Fair visitors watch swine judging July 24. Janice McCoy, head of the UI Extension office, said the state budget impasse is taking its toll on county fairs. “We are still moving forward with this summer’s 4-H fair, but winners won’t get a payout,” she said.

City’s new hotel is ready for guests, not only improving the business landscape, but the riverfront’s as well BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

ROCK FALLS – The city observed a milestone Thursday in its ongoing journey to make the riverfront a destination point. Holiday Inn Express & Suites at 301 E. Second St., the riverfront’s christened redevelopment anchor, opened 1 day short of 2 years after plans for the project were publicly announced. Delays drove up the cost for the Rock Falls Hotel Group from about $6.1 million to $7.5 million. Just a few minutes on an inviting patio overlooking the river, however, made city officials believe the hotel was worth the wait. “There seemed to be one thing after the other through the construction process, but the end product is very good, and we think the hotel is going to be well-received,” Mayor Bill Wescott said. At about noon, staff at the 68-room hotel were looking to clear the final operational hurdle. “We’re just waiting for everything to be ready at the front desk so people can check in,” General Manager Amy Poci said. Word came at about 4 p.m. that all of the technology was properly connected with the parent company’s mainframe. Reservations were taken online prior to the opening.

Add county fairs – and 4-H kids – to the growing list of those feeling the pinch of no state budget. In Ogle County, the fair board is asking residents for donations to pay the premiums paid to project winners – mostly 4-H club members and other youth – but also baking contest winners and the like. “The reason we are doing this is that we have lost all funding from the state, like a lot of others, due to the lack of a budget,” board President Harlan Holm said this week. “We want to be able to provide the services we have in the past for kids. What [donations] will be used for is to pay the premiums for the projects. It will not be used for anything else.” In a letter to residents dated March 21, the fair association said it paid $29,001 in premiums last year. Premiums are paid to the top six finishers in each class. “We would like to continue this practice, but without the necessary funding, we cannot,” the letter read. “Without incentive to draw the youth to compete, we are afraid that the county fair could be approaching the end of an era of old tradition, and quite possibly the fair itself.”
