Long after the war ... Sterling veteran to receive medals today, 47 years after service BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525 @JPigee84
STERLING – After 47 years, Ray Torres still gets emotional when he talks about the day he was attacked during the Vietnam War. “In that couple seconds, your whole life flashes before you,” he said Thursday with tears in his eyes.
Today, 47 years after he was critically injured when a grenade exploded within 3 feet of him, Torres, 68, will receive five replacement medals during a ceremony in Rock Island. More than 30 of Torres’ friends and family will travel to Rock Island for the event. In 2011, Torres’ story was part of “Vietnam in HD,” a documentary that aired on the History Channel.
Torres will receive a Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, and a Combat Action Ribbon. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos will present Torres with the medals. Torres and his family contacted Bustos’ office for assistance in tracking down the service medals. MEDALS CONTINUED ON A10

Cody Girkin and Emma Cooperrider enter the Bi-County Special Education Cooperative Prom on Friday in the Rock Falls Community Building. The cooperative had its first prom, life skills teacher Kim Martin said, because the kids “have watched other students go to prom, and it’s something they have wanted to do for a while.”
Bi-County students dance the day away during inaugural event BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525 @JPigee84
STERLING – Justin Richards, a student at Bi-County Special Education Cooperative, was dancing by himself Friday right before the DJ began playing “Teach Me How to Dougie.” Once the dance song started playing, Richards, 18, lit up, dancing like there was no
tomorrow as his classmates made a circle around him. “This is a great time,” Richards said, catching his breath, sweat dripping from his face. “This is awesome.” For the first time, Friday afternoon was prom day for Bi-County’s 24 students. Because most of their classes are at the Whiteside Area Career Center, most of the kids don’t have an opportunity to attend prom.

“They have watched other students go to prom, and it’s something they have wanted to do for a while,” said Kim Martin, who, along with fellow life skills teacher Taylor Breedlove, organized the event. Students got dressed first thing in the morning at the career center. The clothes the students wore were donated, and Hair Gallery, located in Sterling, did the girls’ hair. Once dressed, the students

ROCK FALLS – Illinois Republicans say they are tired of all the jokes they hear about the state of Illinois. “When I go on vacation to Arizona or somewhere, and when people ask when I am from, I’m afraid to say I’m from Illinois,” said Cook County Commissioner Timothy Schneider. “We rank in the Timothy bottom of the barrel Schneider in just about every- Cook County commissioner thing there is.” Schneider was one of many Republicans who filled a banquet room at the Rock Falls Days Inn Friday night to attend the annual Whiteside County Republicans’ Lincoln Day Dinner. Among those in attendance were Dana Nelson, Whiteside County clerk; Bob Sondgeroth, superintendent of the Whiteside County Regional Office of Education; Paul McMahon, superintendent of the Lee/Ogle Regional Office of Education, and state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris. Unable to attend because of legislative duties were several area lawmakers, including state Sen. Tim Bivins and state Rep. Tom Demmer, both Dixon Republicans, and state Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Freeport. GOP CONTINUED ON A8
