Union: At least 6 teachers at risk District not releasing details about cut options; board to meet, finalize plan Wednesday BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN cheimerman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 @CHeimerman_SVM

STERLING – The elimination of at least six teacher positions will be discussed at a Sterling Public Schools hearing Wednesday, according to information submitted to Sauk Valley Media by the Sterling teachers’ union. Because of no new revenue projected, the uncertainty of state funding, stagnant property values and an anticipated 31 percent increase to insur-

ance costs in the 2016-17 school year, the district faces a projected $800,000 shortfall. Ten budget reduction options were proposed at the March 16 board Tad meeting. Superintendent Everett Tad Everett said the savings would be in excess of $800,000, but he would not disclose how much in excess, or detail what the expected savings for each would be. “I can, but I won’t,” Everett said. SVM filed a Freedom of Informa-

tion Act request Tuesday for emails and documents regarding the budgetreduction plan, so as to fully inform the public on the options people will be asked to comment on at Wedneeday’s hearing. The district by law has 5 business days to turn over any drafts, final or preliminary, which contain facts, such as a reduction of “x” number of positions would result in “$xx” savings. The fifth day, therefore, would be Tuesday, the day before the hearing. TEACHERS CONTINUED ON A9

To attend The Sterling school board will have a reduction-in-force hearing at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the high school library, 1608 Fourth Ave. The board is expected to discuss 10 cost-savings options, including cutting six teacher positions, and vote on the measures it will impose to alleviate a projected $800,000 deficit in the 2016-17 school district budget. Andrea Vondra, a YMCA fitness instructor and coordinator of its Coordinated Approach to Child Health program, leads girls at Challand Middle School in Sterling in a kickboxing aerobics lesson recently. The lesson was to inspire students to join a new YMCA program called Girls on the Go, which teaches preteens about healthy eating, meeting friends, and running a 5K.

Going, going, girls! YMCA offers new running program for preteen girls BY KAYLA HEIMERMAN Special to Sauk Valley Media

STERLING – A new program through the Sterling-Rock Falls YMCA will teach middle-school girls to run like a girl – with brawn, beauty, and brains – and will challenge the community to keep up. Girls on the Go is a 10-week program that will prepare girls in grades six through eight to run a 5K while building positive self-esteem, forging friendships, and

establishing lifelong healthy physical, social, and emotional habits. The program is designed and led by women for girls. Ashley Richter, engagement director at the YMCA, is spearheading the program. She’s the former CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) coordinator and wants to engage preteen girls, who might not want or be able to participate in school-based or structured sports, but need a similar positive outlet. “We saw a need for [a program] specifically for sixththrough eighth-grade girls,” she said.

ROCK FALLS – George Bellovics has a little different take on the often-heard movie line, “if you build it, [they] will come.” Bellovics, a landscape architect for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, led a charrette Monday at which 25 residents put their stamp on the city’s trail development plans. The participants split into three groups for brainstorming, and a designated spokesman shared ideas from each group. The floor was then opened up for discussion between all involved. While the trails hold great promise as a lure for tourism and economic development, Bellovics believes residents should take advantage of the chance to engage in the process and, first and foremost, “build it for yourselves.” The residents conveyed the desire to embrace the city’s history and make the trails their own, he said. “All of the groups picked up on the importance of highlighting historical components and giving the trails that identity. Everyone has a choice to be engaged and actually feel connected to where they live.” If the trails become an important and enjoyable part of the local experience, the rest should take care of itself.
