THOMSON PRISON
Bureau OKs $53.7M in funding Full activation of correctional center expected to take 2 years BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 570
THOMSON – The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Prisons has removed a big hurdle to opening the Thomson Correctional Center. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin
and 17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced Thursday that the Bureau of Prisons has committed $53.7 million in funding to the activation of the empty Carroll County prison built in 2001. The funding was approved by Congress in January as part of
the Omnibus Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2014. Of the funding, $10 million is designated for renovation, and $43.7 million will be used for staffing and equipment purchases and upgrades. The full activation of the facility is expected to take 2 years
at a cost of $25 million for upgrades and renovations and approximately $170 million for equipment and staffing. “This is the news we’ve been waiting for,” Durbin said in a news release. PRISON CONTINUED ON A3

He recalls that while on those calls, he first took an interest in the sheriff’s department. “That was kind of the spark,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to have people who were decent enough to show me some things and show me how things were done, law-enforcement-

It’s been 31 years since Varga was that 16-year-old helping at the scene of car accidents, but now he’s the one in charge. Varga is again running for the office of Lee County sheriff, seeking a third consecutive term. Opposing him in Tuesday’s Republican primary election is John Simonton, a Dixon police officer and retired Illinois State Police commander.
John Simonton always knew he wanted to work in law enforcement, but it wasn’t until recently that he decided to run for sheriff. Simonton, 53, was born in Streator, but grew up in Mendota, where one of two younger brothers still lives. His dad worked at a telephone company, and his mom was a bookkeeper at a grocery store.
