An emphasis on collaboration Sauk at center of business-education partnerships BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

A renewed focus on business and educational partnerships

continues to sharpen as Sauk Valley Community College launches its community leadership program. The deadline to apply for the class is May 1, and orientation is Aug. 3. The class usually meets from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, August through May. Exceptions include an overnight retreat to Camp Benson, and a

planned trip to Springfield. The Sauk Valley Community Leadership Program is one of several initiatives that have put the community college at the center of regional business and leadership development efforts since David Hellmich took the helm at the college. A news conference is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at the college to discuss the resurrection

of a Small Business Development Center at Sauk. The Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls chambers of commerce, the college, city and county officials, and several local banks have partnered to bring back a resource for small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Area manufacturers also are working closely with the college to pique students’ interest

Cade Adams, an eighth-grader at Rock Falls Middle School, doesn’t lose many matches on the wrestling mat. Even in his first defeat by pinfall this season, Adams showed that he was a winner. He’s pictured here outside of the wrestling room at Rock Falls High School.

Eighth-grader gives ultimate gesture of sportsmanship

t 13 years old, Cade Adams already has fought his share of battles. Sensing a wrestling opponent so desperately needed a victory, Cade did what Cade does: He helped, without a second thought. At a Jan. 28 meet, the Rock Falls Middle School eighthgrader volunteered for a second match against a special needs student from Erie. Cade’s coach, Terry Osborne, told him to “play nice, and let him enjoy his night.” “I didn’t want him to open up and go all-out,” Osborne said. “Here was a kid who deserves to be out there. Let’s let him go through some moves and have some success out there.” Cade went far beyond

2016 ELECTION | ENDORSEMENTS

Local pols pick their favorites BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

The area’s legislators are firming up their support of candidates in the 2016 presidential race. U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, had been an early supporter of two-time Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Bush dropped out of the race Feb. 20, after a disppointing showing in the South Carolina primary. Kinzinger has now pledged his support to another Florida politician, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio. After a Feb. 24 appearance on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” where he discussed his endorsement, Kinzinger’s camp sent out a news release announcing the decision. “Today, I’m proud to announce my endorsement of Sen. Marco Rubio for president,” the 16th District congressman said. FAVORITES CONTINUED ON A5
