iven that another name for a gravel ride is an adventure ride, it’s no surprise that this form of cycling has grown in popularity in recent years.
This combination of road biking and mountain biking that takes cyclists onto unpaved roads and into parts largely unknown has a lot of appeal to those who avoid the pavement and high-traffic roadways. “People like it because they’re roads you don’t normally travel,” says Aurora-based bike shop All Spoked Up Manager Jon Schratz, who designs the GPS gravel ride routes that the shop has hosted. “They’re mostly open, gravel country roads, usually only accessible by certain types of cars, and there’s no traffic on them other than maybe some slow-moving farm equipment, so they’re relatively safe.” According to Schratz, most serious

cyclists these days have a GPS computer on their bicycle, so they can easily follow the gravel route. The rides, which have started from the shop at 8 a.m. Sundays, are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will resume when given the all-clear. “In the last five years, gravel riding has really taken off,” says Schratz, who notes the decline in competitive road racing, giving way to community-oriented gravel riding. “With gravel riding, also called adventure riding, you can go at your own pace rather than work toward an end goal other than a certain distance you might want, and there’s less traffic. It’s a safer entry point for a lot of cyclists, and people are more encouraging of newer riders starting out.” A gravel bike looks like a road bike, similar to the old 10-speeds style racer, but with much wider tires and “a little more aggressive tread,”
says Schratz. “It’s like road bikes with the dropped handlebars, only knobbier tires.” A gravel ride also provides cyclists the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife. Schratz has observed the likes of deer, hawks, bald eagles, and even turkey vultures. “They’re really big and really scary looking, but they won’t mess with you,” he says. All Spoked Ups’s gravel rides are 100 percent self-supported, meaning you need to bring your own food and water. Sometimes there’s a gas station at the halfway point. “But not always,” says Schratz. The rides have drawn a hugely positive response. “I get a lot of, ‘I’ve never been down those roads. That was really cool!’” says Schratz. llinoisans may be under a stay-at-home order, but birds are free to fly without compunction. Thank goodness! I can’t wait to welcome back our feathered friends decked out in their boldest and brightest colors. Spring is the best time to see birds in Illinois. Each year, spring migration brings hundreds of species through the state. Through March 29, an amazing 195 bird species have been reported in Illinois, which is right on par with previous years. The Fox River is one of the best places to watch them. Kane County is blessed with numerous forest preserves up and down the river, including Ferson Creek Fen Nature
Preserve, Norris Woods Nature Preserve, Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve, Fabyan Forest Preserve and Les Arends Forest Preserve. In fact, 212 different bird species have been seen at Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin, making it one of the “birdiest” places in Kane County! By now, the waterfowl that spent the winter along the Fox—birds like Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser and Buffleheads—are off to their breeding grounds in Canada and won’t return until December. Taking their place are Pied-Billed Grebe, Hooded Merganser and what may well be the most beautiful bird in Illinois, the Wood Duck. It looks positively regal with its drooping green crest, red eye and black-and-white face. If you look up, you might just see a flock of

Want to try something special? Bundle up and head out to Ferson Creek Fen in St. Charles at dusk. Walk along the trail in the grassy area and wait. When it’s nearly dark, you’ll hear male American Woodcocks calling to attract females. Beeent…Beeent…Beeent. Then, suddenly, one of the birds will launch itself straight up into the sky. You may not even see it, but you’ll certainly hear it. Their wings make a high-pitched twittering sound as they fly.
If there’s one time to hit the Fox River forest preserves, it’s got to be May. That’s when the warblers and thrushes arrive. More than 30 warbler species have been observed at Les Arends Forest Preserve alone. Birdwatchers wait all year to see these small, colorful birds decked out in their breeding plumage. Their names say it all: There’s Bay-Breasted Warbler, Chestnut-Sided Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Orange-Crowned Warbler and Black-Throated Blue Warbler, to name a few.
In April, it’s time for the shorebirds to start passing through. Keep an eye on the riverbanks and sandbars for Solitary Sandpiper and the adorable Spotted Sandpiper. You can’t miss the latter. It’s got a white breast with dark spots, and
And it’s not just their colors that please, but their sounds. The “dawn chorus” is a symphony of trills, whistles, chirps and buzzes. The flute-like song of the
Wood Thrush is said to be the most beautiful bird song in North America. Governor Pritzker’s stay-at-home order explicitly allows Illinois residents to engage in outdoor activities, such as walking and hiking, as long as they comply with social distancing requirements. So get out of the house, get some fresh air, and see what’s around. Enjoy the sights and sounds of spring! TR Both above its surface and below, our dazzling Fox River is jam-packed with life. Day and night, throughout the year, resident as well as migratory species enliven the region with nonstop action. All you need to know is where to look.

Any time of year is a good time to see mammals, and the Fox River is a valued resource for many. Beavers, muskrats and mink are common sights, especially at dawn and dusk, and it’s not unusual to spot whitetailed deer taking a drink or, like you, taking in the view.
Spring Trail If you find yourself on the trail in spring, make sure your gaze is focused upward. Mid-March through late May, the trees are teeming with migratory birds. Many species of warblers, the males decked out in breeding finery, hunt and peck for insects among the budding leaves. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for ruby-throated hummingbirds. Although best known for their nectar-sipping habits, they’re also prodigious consumers of insects—
which provide the protein these tiny dynamos need to raise their families. As the days get warmer, be on the lookout for reptiles and amphibians. Small DeKay’s, or brown, snakes frequently warm up on the Fox River Trail’s asphalt surfaces, and turtles often cross as they make their way to and from the water. Note: If you see one of these cold-blooded creatures on the trail, please don’t move it unless it is in imminent danger. And even then, move it only as far as needed, and in the direction its head is facing, to protect it from the threat. Note No. 2: The Fox River is NOT home to venomous snakes. Those dark, thick-bodied snakes basking on rocks and logs are northern water snakes and, while they will bite, are nonvenomous.

RAIL Frogs and toads may appear along the trail, but you’re more likely to hear them than see them. Listen for American toads trilling, green frogs twanging (their call sounds like a loose banjo string) and bullfrogs bellowing as the weather transitions from spring to summer.
Summer Speaking of summer, add these animals to your list of what to look for: Ospreys soaring overhead; cormorants diving for food; and herons and egrets foraging in the shallows. If, like these birds, your appetite is for fish, you might want to bring a pole and wet a line. Thanks to years of catch-and-release conservation, as well as some dam removals and shoreline restoration projects, the Fox River’s smallmouth bass population has never been better.
Promises wildlife viewing opportunities
Moving from summer into fall, migrations begin anew. Those birds we welcomed in spring are heading back south, though their bright spring colors in many cases have been replaced with subdued, nonbreeding plumage. August is the time that swallows also head for their wintering grounds, which could be as close as the Gulf Coast and as far as Central America. Look for large groups of these birds foraging above the water, availing themselves of the river’s bountiful insect population.
Winter Walks Winter is still a great time to get out and enjoy the scenery—and ducks! Several species including common and hooded mergansers, goldeneyes and buffleheads can be found in those areas of the river that don’t freeze and are

particularly common near the discharge pipes of municipal water treatment plants, where plant and animal life is rich. Last but not least, you might be lucky enough to spot our nation’s symbol, the bald eagle. Once federally endangered, the species has made a remarkable comeback—thanks largely to improved water quality and the ensuing uptick in fish populations. Today we can enjoy viewing resident pairs as well as northern individuals that visit over the winter months. Fox River wildlife is 24/7/365. As you stroll, jog or bike its trails, be sure you don’t miss the show!

Navigating the trail of life-long passion By Melissa Rubalcaba Riske
L
ast December, at the age of 52, Karen Cerveny of Batavia had hip replacement surgery and six weeks later her doctor cleared her to resume activities, including her weekly role as a spin teacher at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Health & Wellness Center. “Cycling can be a great way of regaining one’s strength because it’s low impact,” says Cerveny, a fitness instructor and a junior high school physical education and health teacher. Cerveny’s hip replacement

surgery took an anterior approach, which allowed for less cutting of soft tissue and muscle as well as a quicker recovery. She credits her caring medical team, her orthopedic doctor at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital and physical therapist at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Outpatient Physical Therapy in Geneva, not to mention her active lifestyle pre-operation, that allowed her to quickly get back in her bike’s saddle. For more than 20 years, Cerveny has been an avid cyclist. She’s found pleasure in a leisurely
ride on the bike trails along the Fox River and pushed herself in competitions, including road races and triathlons. A former runner, Cerveny says she turned to cycling for a great workout that is gentler on the joints compared with the impact of running or jogging. “I think cycling is great as a lifetime activity,” Cerveny says. Indoors, Cerveny loves her 5:15 p.m. spin class at Delnor Health & Wellness, where she leads and encourages participants through 45 minutes of cycling, followed by 20 minutes of

strength training and a 10-minute stretching session.
technician at Bike Rack for more than 12 years.
“It’s a total body workout,” Cerveny says.
Using some of the latest technology, Seay and his team can help a cyclist find a comfortable ride. He uses Saddle Pressure Mapping to see how a rider is distributing weight across the saddle and he uses cameras to capture a rider’s motion and movements. He also uses pressure sensors in a cyclist’s shoes to measure and adjust for foot comfort as well.
But her favorite place on two wheels is outdoors. She cycles year-round outdoors, with several bikes fitted for the conditions and workout. “It depends on what my goals are for the workout, and the weather, on which bike I use,” she adds. Her road cycle is great for long trips and she enjoys the roads in Maple Park, while her bike with fat tires and bar mittens is the best option during cold weather months. Each bike is designed for a specific workout and training and each bike fits her as needed. Not all bikes are equal and the staff at Bike Rack in St. Charles helps riders to find the cycle that meets their needs, making adjustments to the saddle, handlebars and other moveable elements for the most comfortable ride. “We take into account individual goals, medical issues, and core strength and then we adjust a bike around a person,” explains Cameron Seay, lead bike and fit
“Riding a bike should be a fun thing to do,” Seay says. “Every single person has a more ideal posture to prevent injuries and to make sure they are comfortable on the bike.” Outdoor cycling isn’t without dangers and Cerveny says she’s had several close encounters with distracted motorists. A helmet, bright colored clothing and a rear flashing light on her bike are fundamental bike safety elements. She’s also strict about obeying the rules of the road too. “Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, we all need to work together to keep each other safe,” Cerveny says.
Back indoors, Cerveny says cycling classes, like Spin, can be a great workout especially for those returning to cycling after many years. The stationary bike offers stability and she appreciates when first-timers let her know they’re in her class so she can take a few minutes to help them set up their bikes and settle into a comfortable position. With cycling classes, the instructor leads but it’s the participants who select their level of intensity. She says participants shouldn’t worry about where they set the dial. “You’re goal is to make it through the class.” Cerveny says she worries about having hip replacement at her age and she did hear some people caution her against the surgery. Life before her surgery meant moderate pain when she cycled and she found her pain interfering with her active lifestyle and her overall well being. Today, she has no regrets on having the surgery and her ability to resume her activities. “It’s about the quality of my life. I’m so glad I didn’t wait,” Cerveny said. “Now I bike pain free.”

t’s time to experience bicycling in a whole new way. The electric bike! Not a gas powered moped - a true, battery powered, good to the environment, electric bike. Electric bikes are this century’s newest addition to the cycling industry – and what a fabulous addition it has been. No matter whom you talk to, electric bikes are most often described as “F-U-N”; especially if you self-identify as a Baby Boomer. The first electric bikes launched were the basic comfort bicycles designed for commuters and to ride around town, then quickly moved into mountain, road, and even three wheel bikes (my 85 year old Mom loves this bike and feels confident about her balance on it). The bikes range is typically 40 miles on one charge. Electric bikes allow a rider to ride a further distance, a little faster, and gets you there less sweaty than a traditional bicycle. As you ride, you determine how much help you want from the bike and how much exercise you want. People often choose little to no assistance on a straight-away to get more exercise, and choose more help to get up a hill. Cool!
