bytheOgle Countystate’sattorney withtwocountsofattemptedfirst-degree murder, onecountofaggravated batterytoapoliceofficer,onecountof aggravatedassaultofapoliceofficer, twocountsofaggravatedfleeingor attemptingtoeludeapolice officer, onecountofunlawfuldisplayof a license plateandonecountofClassA speeding35-plusmphoverthespeed limit.
“Afterreviewofthereports,we believethesearethemostappropriate charges,” OgleCountyState’sAttorneyMikeRocksaid.Heemphasized thatTaylorispresumedinnocentuntil provedguilty.
OgleCountySheriffBrianVanVicklesaidinareporthisdepartment wasadvisedbyStephensonCounty Sheriff’s Officethatitsdeputieswere
pursuingaMazda MX5southboundon IllinoisRoute26 fromFreeport.The pursuitcontinued southontoFreeport Road.
AnOgleCounty deputydeployed stopsticksinthe areaofFreeportand Milledgevilleroads inanattempttoflattenthefleeingvehicle’stiresandend thepursuit,thereportsaid.
Thereportread:“Asthedriverof thefleeingvehicleapproachedthe deputy,heveeredleftinanattemptto strikethedeputy,whowasonthe shoulderoftheoppositelaneoftraffic. Thedeputywasabletomoveoutofthe
wayofthefleeingvehicle.”
TheMazdastrucktheStephenson Countysquadcarafteritenteredthe roadway,accordingtothereport.
“Itdefinitelyappearstobeintentional,”VanVicklesaid.“He[Taylor] couldhavegonearoundtheotherside, buthe chosetogotothesidethedeputywason.”
VanVicklesaidhebelievedStephensonCountywaschasingTaylor fortrafficoffenses.
TaylorwasincourtonNov.23fora bondhearing,wherebondwassetat $500,000,hesaid.

“Well,ourgarbageserviceisrunningwithawholebunchofreallybig trucksrunningaround,”Labashsaid. “Sotherealityisthattheyareseeing thesameinflationarypressuresthat we’reseeing.”
After13yearsservingtheOregon SchoolDistrict220asitssuperintendent,TomMahoneyhasannounced thathewillretireeffectiveJune30, 2024.Theschoolboardhasappointed PJCaposey,formerOregonHigh SchoolprincipalandcurrentMeridian SchoolDistrictsuperintendent,ashis replacement.
“Ithasbeenanhonortoserveas Oregon’ssuperintendenttheselast13 years,”Mahoneysaid.“Ilovethe OCUSDcommunity,andIhaveloved beingitsschoolsuperintendent. OCUSDisaremarkableplacetolearn, work andlive.Iknowthedistrictwill
continueasuccessfulpathledby Caposey.”

Oneofthedarkestandcruelestchaptersof theUnitedStateswastheremovalof NativeAmericansfromtheirlands.
In1830,theUnitedStatesLegislaturepassedthe RemovalAct.Atthistimetherewerefivecivilized tribeslocatedinSoutheasternUnitedStates,eastof theMississippiRiver.ThefivetribesweretheCherokee,Muscogee,Seminole,ChickasawandChoctaw.
Thepurposeofthisactwastoforciblymove60,000 NativeAmericansandtheirslaveswestoftheMississippi.Thisdisplacementoccurredoveraperiodof 20yearsfrom1830to1850.Thiswasduringthetime OregonCitywasfoundedbyJohnPhelpsin1836and AndrewJacksonwasPresident.
Justareminder,drivingoutthe“Indians”from theirlandswasaccomplishedbyourancestorswhile theywereestablishing(our)nation.TheTrailOf TearswaslabeledEthnicCleansing. TheU.S.Governmentestablishedtrailstoaccomplishthis removalofIndiansfromAlabamaandGeorgia to Oklahoma.
Americansettlerswerepressuringthefederal governmenttoremovetheIndiansfromtheSoutheast.Manyofthesesettlerswereencroachingon Indianlands,whileotherswantedmorelandmade availabletothesettlers.
In1830,about2,000milesoftrailswereauthorized byfederallawfortheremovaloftheCherokeepeople.ThisiscalledtheTrailofTearsNationalHistoricTrail,whichgoesthroughninestatesincluding southernIllinois.
Duringthisethniccleansingcarriedoutbythe U.S.FederalGovernment,U.S.Armyandstatemili-
tias,theIndianssufferedfromexposure,diseaseand starvationwhile ontheir waytotheirnewlydesignatedIndianreserveswhilethousandslosttheir lives.
By1847,46,000Indiansfromthesoutheastern stateshadbeenremovedfromtheirhomelands, opening25millionacresforwhitesettlement.
AneventbysixcyclistsfromtheCherokeeNation rodeover950milesoftheTrailofTearsandretraced thesamepaththattheirancestorstook.Theyaveraged about60milesaday, startingtheirjourney in theformercapitaloftheCherokeeNation,New Echota,Georgia,andfinishinginTahlequah, Oklahoma,fromthehomestheirfathersmadetoaland theydidnotknow.
TheywereforcedwestontheTrailofTearson foot,horse,wagonorsteamboatsfrom1836-1839.
DuringthistimeinourhistoryIllinoiswas founded(1818),therewastheBlackHawkWar(1832), andOregonwasfoundedbyJohnPhelps.Iguess theythoughttheirliveswere moreimportantthan theIndians.

ofOregon–alreadyworkedonSouth MapleAvenue,WestBuffaloStreet and South Congress Avenue this year, PoloPublicWorksDirectorKendall Kykersaid.Moreworkwilltakeplace in2023,hesaid.
Theyhadbeen“shuttingdown”last week,butbecauseofgoodweather decidedtotakecareoftheundergroundworkonWestColdenStreet betweenSouthCongressandDivision avenues,Kykersaid.
“Whatthey’regoingtodoisone moreblockthisyear,andthenthey’ll bedone,”hesaid.“ThenIthinkthey shouldbedoneandoutofhereabout theendofthatweek.”
The ColdenStreet Projectencom-
passesabout10.5blocks,spanning boththedowntownbusinessdistrict andresidentialneighborhoods.Itis meanttohelpalleviatewaterbuildup onIllinoisRoute26–namedDivision AvenueinPolocitylimits–duringtorrentialrainevents.

“Wewillhavetodospecialcleanings,”hesaid.

“IfIjust plow it andthrowitin everybody’s yard,we’renotgoingto havealotofhappycampers,andthen I’vegotalotmoreworktodo,which coststhetaxpayersmoneywhichwe don’twanttodo,”hesaid.“Thenthe restofthetown,whenwehaulsnow, wetakethatoutanddumpitinacornfieldanditjustmelts.”

Oregon downs Polo 42-27 in nonconference contest

TheOregonLadyHawksbuiltabig leadandneverlookedbackina42-27 nonconferencewinoverthePoloMarcosattheBlackhawkCenteron Nov.22.
TheHawkshittheglasshardon bothendsofthecourtandtookadvantageofcoldshootingbytheMarcosto getoutintransitionandpushupthe court.Oregonalsohadseveralsecond-,third-,andevenfourth-chance scoringopportunitiesbecauseoftheir rebounding.
“Wecameintoitwantingtoout-reboundthem.Typicallyourbestgames aretheoneswhereweleadtheway withboards.Ithelpedalottonight,” seniorforwardMariahDrakesaid.
ThefocusfortheHawkswason runningthroughtheir offensivesets. Theystruggledtodothatconsistently lastSaturday in theirfinaltwogames attheirowntournament,butwere abletofindarhythminthisone.
Oneofthebig reasonsforthatwas theabilitytogetupthecourtquickly and notallowPolotogetcomfortable ondefense.
“Wewere tryingto runouroffense alottoday,butbeingabletorunalittlebit,thathelpedwithit,”senior guardHadleyLutzsaid.
EverybodygotinvolvedforOregon, aseightplayersscored,andall10who playedhadatleastonerebound.The Hawksfinishedwith51rebounds (including25offensiveboards)to Polo’s38,andoutscoredtheMarcos 16-4insecond-chancepoints.
“Itwasgreat.Thatwasthegoal today,wasto justrunthroughthe offensemorethanweusuallydo,and itgotusalotofopenlooks,”Drake said.
“Ithinkwedidamuchbetterjob runningouroffensethanwhatwedid thispastweekendatthetournament.
It’swhatwe’vebeenworkingon,” coachOlyviaDonahuesaid.“But I givethegirlsthefreedom;iftheysee opportunitiestorunandgun,then we’lldoit.Iftheyneedtopullbackand runtheoffense,thentheydo.Ihavea lotoftrustandfaithinthesegirlsand theirexecution,andtheyexecuted reallywelltonight.”
Oregonalsohadsuccessondefense, forcingtheMarcosintocontested looksandusuallylimitingthemtoone shotbeforegrabbing thereboundand runningtheotherway.
TheHawkshad13stealson22Polo turnovers,whiletheMarcosfinished with11stealson21Oregonmiscues. Buta3-for-24shootingperformancein thefirsthalfwastoomuchforPoloto overcome.
“Weliketoplaythattypeofdefense. Ithinktonightweranitthebestthat we’vedoneallseason,”Lutzsaid.
