Somemight saythatConnor Brownisin his heyday.

Butasfar ashe’s concerned, the best is yetto come.

Brown,21,ofElizabeth,has traversedthehillyterrain in Illinois’ northernmostpointsin Jo Daviess County forthepasttwo yearsscooping up inventoryforhis business, Brown’s Baling andHay,andthose hills aren’t theonlyups anddowns he’sdealt with.Like otherbusinessesowner,Brown hasfaced his share of challenges, but theydon’t bring himdown— theybring himpride..

“You runintoconstant problems,” Brownsaid. “Itsucks, but atthe sametime, attheendofthe day when yougetcaughtup, you’ve fixed theproblems andit’ssomethinga little morerewarding. You’llhave days whereeverythinggoesright, butveryrarelydoesthathappen. Anybodyinthe ag communitycan tell youthat. It’s aconstanttostay ahead. It’s enjoying. It’s rewarding.”

“A lotispatience anddetermination,”hesaid.“When theweatheris not cooperatingwith you, yougot to have patiencethatitwill.Through all ofthechallenges, youhave totell yourselfthat youaregoingto get throughit.”

Haybalingisn’t easy, butBrown hasa strong supportsysteminhis parents, David andDena Brownof Elizabeth, his girlfriend, McKenna Peart, andherparents,Kenneth and Jolleen Peart,ofScales Mound.Connor uses space at the Pearts’farmto store equipmentandhay.

WhenConnor’s father bought a 5-acre fieldnear Elizabethin2020 andwas looking forsomeoneto balehay, Connorheard opportunityknocking.

“He was looking forsomeoneto makethehay,”Connorsaid. “I’m like, ‘You know what,I’llmake the hay.’ Iboughta tractor,Ihad apiece of ground, butI hadno equipment,soIborrowed everything, figuredit out the first year, andthenstarted building from there.”

David once wasa hog farmer, andConnor wouldhelp out atDittmar Farms andOrchardinrural Elizabeth whenhe was young.Connor graduatedfrom RiverRidge HighSchoolin2019, earnedhis American FFADegree2 years later, andalsohas a weldingcertificate from HighlandCommunityCollege in Freeport. Heworked fora welding businessinGratiot, Wisconsin, foracoupleof yearsconcurrently withthebaling businessbefore focusing on histruepassion:living andloving thefarmlife.

“Iffarming’sin your blood, and youhaveadrive forit, itwill find you,”Brown said. “It foundme, and whenIstarted dating McKenna,I gotintroducedtobigger operations. Inever got tiredofit. WhenI was welding,I would weld 8-9hoursa day andthenI’dcome here and work as lateas possible, wheneverIcoulddo it. It’s fresh air.I lovethe cattle.Ilove the crops.”

Livestock chews up much of hishay, buthealsodoesstraw bales forbedding, landscaping, gardening, decoration, and other uses.

Brownusesa New Holland 565balerthatisabout30 years old, as wellasa New Holland316 that’s about anotherdecade older. They’ve traveledmany a field, but these well-oiled machinescontinue to getthejobdone,Brown said.

“Atthe end ofthe day, if you gotanicemachinethat youtake care of andmakes goodbales, it doesn’t matterhowprettyit looks, it doesn’tmatter how newitis; all thatmatters ishow goodofaproduct youcan pump out the back,” Brown said. “I spent alotof time adjustingthem tomake thebales how my customers likethem, and whenit pumps outa good product, Itend to keep it around.”

Brownbalesstraight alfalfa, a grasspasture mix withTimothy grass and clover, anda50-50grass andalfalfa mix. This year, he added wheatstraw to the fold, which is good for landscaping and animal bedding.

Thealfalfahay “hasalot more sugar, andit’s alotmore higher energy,” Brownsaid. It’s good for active horses, especiallythose that get rodeon regularly, andalso good forcattle whoneedfattened up Somehorses have certainissues and require thegrasshay, whichis notsotough andstemmy.

Oneofthebiggest challenges Brownfacesinthe fieldisknowing whetherthe workis goingto be done before inclement weathersetsin. He hasahalf-dozen weather applicationsonhis phone to followthe forecasts. If anyhay

does get rained on,that’s enough forthecowsto munch on.

Browndidn’t know a wholelot abouthorses andtheirdietsuntil gettingtoknowhiscustomers Nowthat hehas, he’s established a customerbase that keepshim plenty busy, althoughhesometimeshas pockets of time forcustombaling. Hiscustomers have faith in him, and areexcitedtoknowthatsomeoneas youngashimis findinga a futureinthe ever-complex worldof agriculture.

“There’s so many ways todoit,” Brown said.“You learnfrom everybody. You talk tooneguy, and you takeapiece of what he hastosay, talkto anotherguy andtake a piece ofthat, putittogether andthrow someof yourowninput inon it, and whatever works for you isthe waytodoit.”

Balingseasontypically runs fromthe endof May tothestart of October. This year, more word-of-mouth helpedhim have hisbest year yet: He churned out

about7,000 bales from nearly 30 acres, andhe evenhadtime todo somecustombaling. He figures thatallof his bales willsell out by theendof November, which isabout2months aheadof when he ran out last season— andthat’s withmorebalesincludedinthe fold.Whenthe leavesturncolors andthe weather getsa littlenippier, Brown usesthattime totake care ofhismachines and hauls any remaining hayhehas to customers.

When snow hitstheground, Browncanlook back on theseason with a sense of accomplishment. It’s a feelingthathestrives forafter eachtime out on the field, even whenthe workpusheshimto the limits.

“Oneof thebest partsaboutitis the feeling of successatthe endof theday, andthepride,”Brownsaid. “I think that’s whatalot of people, especially in my generation, are lacking. There’sa feeling you get thatyou can’tputintowordsuntil you do it. At the endofthe day, when you’ve got yourhaybaled and everything is up inthebarn, andyou’resittingontheporchand it starts raining,it’s so relaxing There’s a feelingthat youaccomplishedsomething, and it doesn’t matterwhat you’re intoor what you’re doing. Ifyoudon’thave that feeling of accomplishment, there’s justnothingtoit.”

Forthepast2years,Brownhas received some help forhis business through an Ottawa-based agriculturegrant program intendedto helpyoungfarmers. The Wayne Wackerlin Memorial Fundisinits fourth year.Brown received$6,000 last year to assistwiththe purchase ofhisownbaler, make tractor repairs and help with costs of twine, fertilizer and fuel. This year,$a 4,000grant fromthe fundwill be usedto purchasea16-inchmobile hayconveyor, whichwill help stack thebales.

Brownbecameinterestedin Wayne’s storythroughhisassociationwiththegrantandhisstory connectedwithBrown. Wayne,25, died in2017 at agrainfacilitythat hemanaged in Newark. He grew up helping his dadonthefamily farm:balinghay, raisinglivestock, andgrowingcorn, soybeans, and wheat. He didn’t slow down during theoff-season either: Hewent on toco-own a firewood business and plowed snow in thewinter. Before hisdeath,he owneda fewfarm vehicles and had rented farmland

growingcorn and soybeans.

“I never met him,or was close tohim, butI reada lotabout him,” Brownsaid. “He waskind oflike me. He was young and started to trytofarm on his own, was doing a goodjobat it and was growing, had agreatimpacton hiscommunity and was looked upupon, and an event likethatstopped itall.

There’salotof up-front costin farming,Brownsaid, and there’s a needto find ways tooffsetthat. The Wackerlingrant isoneof those avenues. Money is raisedfrom ameat raffle and meet-and-greet fundraiser eachNovemberinOttawa withpast andpresentscholarship recipients.

Brownis glad toseethatthere are ways to help youngfarmers get off the ground when it comesto business, and willcontinue tobe a proud supporter of the Wackerlin grant.

“Thisgrant really, really helps peoplewiththat,”Brownsaid.“You never read about youngpeople tryingtostart businesses, but you go toa placelike that andlook what theirorganizationisdoing,it’s fantastic. It’s really shininga light on people whohave true grit and are committed todoing what theylove, and it’s helping them out huge. It’s

helped mea lot, andI’veseen how it’s helped a lotof otherpeople.”

Brown wantstomakenext year more successfulthanthispast one, but he’s alsocautiousabout hisgrowth;he doesn’t want to expand too much, lesthebecome overwhelmed. But he’s got the tools and the support, andthere’s no Jo Daviess hill that’s too tough forhim to climb.

“I find it real interesting when yousit down atthe endof the year

and you put everythingtogether, you figure out where you’re at and what you want to change fornext year,” Brown said. “I’m a people person, and what I really, reallyenjoy it’s one ofthefavoritethings I do—ismeeting newcustomers and keepingintouch with them.

“There’ssomany great people outthere.I’m fortunate enoughto have thosegreat people as customers of mine.”
