Oregon Area Farm Tour dubbed a success by organizer

Initsfirstgo-round,theOregon AreaFarmTour was asuccess,organizerssay.

“Itwasasunnyfalldaywith perfectweather,”saidLizVos,Oregon AreaChamberofCommerceexecutivedirector.“Peoplejustwantedto getoutoftheirhousesandgoexploring.”

ThefarmtourtookplacetheafternoonofOct.9.Peoplewereableto tourfourfarms:BerryViewOrchard andDietrichRanch,bothinMt.Morris,andDandelionFeathersFarmand WhitePinesRanch,bothinOregon.

VossaidshewastoldbyDandelion FeathersFarmownerAndreaMur-

raythatMurraywasdoingfacepaintingnonstopfrom1to4p.m.,andMurray’sparentscounted120to140 visitors.

Totalparticipationishardtomeasurebecauseofthespread-outnature oftheevent,Vossaid.

“Basedonthenumberofpeopleat theDandelionFeathersFarm,I’dsay maybethereweremorethanthat,” shesaid.“Idon’treallyhaveawayof knowing.”

TheUniversityofIllinoisExtensionwasatDietrichRanch,where theyhadawormcompostandsoil testingstand,Vossaid.Thepeople runningthatreported27adultsand20 childrenvisitedtheirstand,andeven morewereexploringotherareasof thefarm,shesaid.

“Theyhadsomuchfun,”Vossaid.

Adinnerandbarndanceoriginally werescheduledtofollowtheafternoonfarmtours,butthatpartofthe eventwascanceled.

“Ithinksomepeoplejustwantedto dothefarmvisits,”Vossaid.

Thereusedtobefarmtoursevery year,buttherehasn’tbeenonein a while,Vossaidwhenaskedherreasonforhostingtheevent.

“Weliveinaruralcommunity,and Ithinkthatwehaveseveral[ChamberofCommerce]membersthatthey havefarms,farmstoresandfarm boutiquesandthings,” shesaid.“I thoughtitwouldbefuntodoanevent centered aroundthemandwhatthey havetooffer.Ourcommunityisreally agreatruraldestination.”

Let Freedom Ring Family Fall Festival set for Oct. 16

TheFamilyFallFestivalissetfor 1to4p.m.onOct.16.Itwilltakeplace onthevillagesquare;therainlocation istheMt.MorrisSeniorCenter.

“It’sanewthingwe’retryingto raisesome money forthefestival, but alsotogetsomefallfunin,too,”said TiffanyWest,LetFreedomRingCom-

mitteechairperson.

Activitiesincludeapennycarnival, pumpkincarvingcontest,costume paradeandcraftshow,shesaid.

Thereareabout15craft vendors signeduptoattend,Westsaid.Tickets forpennycarnivalgamesaresixticketsfor$1,shesaid.

“TheEvangelicalFreeChurchis helpingwiththepennycarnivalgames andstuff,”Westsaid.“We’llbedoing prizes forthosegamesforthekids.”

TwoFreeport residentswere arrestedlastweekforstealingmerchandisefromanOregonstore.

TerryM.Ernst,58,ofFreeport,and MichaelC.Hille,57,ofFreeport,were arrestedafterpoliceinvestigated a retailtheftattheOregonSnyderAce Hardwarestore,201N.FourthSt.,at 6:54p.m.onThursday,Oct.6.

“OregonpolicerespondedtoapossibleretailtheftattheOregonSnyder AceHardware.Itwasallegedthattwo malesubjectsenteredthestoreand beganconcealingafelonyamountof merchandise,”OregonPoliceChief JoeBrookssaidinanOct.7news release.“Thetwosubjectsmatchedthe descriptionfromapriortheftatthe storeandtheywereconfrontedby employees.UponarrivaloftheOregon

officers,afootpursuitensued.

“WiththeassistanceoftheOgle CountySheriff’sDepartment,the ByronPoliceDepartment,andtheMt. MorrisPoliceDepartment,thesuspect’svehiclewaslocatedinthe200 blockofNorthThirdStreetandafelonystopwasconducted.Twomale subjectsweretakenintocustody.”

Ernstwaschargedwithfourcounts offelonyretailtheft.

Corinth Cemetery final resting place for 5,688 soldiers

Lt. RichardWatsonofDeKalb, whowaswiththe36thofIllinois,wasstillintheareaof Corinth.HewaswithCompanyFof theArmyoftheOhio.

Hedoesnotgoanyfurthersouthat thattime.Beforeheleftthearea,he hadhopedtoseehisbrother,Thomas, whowaswiththe72ndofIllinois.They weresomewherecloseby.

Aswepulledintothemuseumparkinglot,wecouldseeasignthatsaid, “Closed.”Butsomeoneinstantlyran overfromthepark,openedthe museum,andsaid,“Justturnonthe lightsasyou go throughitandenjoy whatwehave.”

InapreviousarticleIgaveahistory ofourlibrary.TwoyearsafterOregon wasincorporated March21,1870,the IllinoisGeneralAssembly passedan ordinancefortheestablishmentoffree publiclibraries.

OnDec.30,1872,theCityCouncilof Oregonpassedanordinanceforthe establishmentofapubliclibraryand readingroom.

In1873oneyearaftertherailroad passedthroughOregonand30years beforethefirstcararrived,thefirst librarywasestablishedabovethe officeofHenryBurchelllocatedat211 S.ThirdSt.Thisbuildingisnowaresidence.

Thesecondlibrarywaslocated abovetheFirstNationalBankon WashingtonStreet.

In1900,theLibraryBoardapproved

BorninSmokeRun,PAonJan.17th,1939, JonathanClayRobesonwasborntoPearl andMyrvRobeson.Butch,asheisknownto hisfamily,wasthesecondoldestoffive.He soldnewspapers,raisedchickens,andtried justabouteverythingtomakeabuckinhis youth.

Jonwasacomplicatedmanwhoreveled incomplicationsanddislikedwhenpeople triedtosummarizetheirpositionbystarting asentencewith“basically”-“Whatdoesthat evenmean?”he’dsay.Thereweremany detailstoconsiderandfewtodiscard.He foundmodernfootballoffensiveschemes impractical,enjoyedspicyfoods,butdisliked garlic.Helikedtoignoremercyetiquetteby sendingsomeoneincroquet(andtheequivalenceinping-pong,Monopoly,Risk,andany

cardgameonecanconjure).Heinsistedthat batteriesshouldberefrigeratedforoptimum storage,thatalmosteverythingshouldbelabeledwithadate,andheaccomplishedgreat featswithbungeecords.

Jonwasthefirstinhisfamilytograduate fromcollege.

AtAkronUniversityheletteredinthree sportswhileworkinghiswaythroughto makeendsmeet.AfterjoiningtheArmy Corp.ofEngineers(heservedintheReserves for20years)hemetandsoonmarriedCarole Ann(Kennedy),theloveofhislife.Thisoccasioninstantlymadehimtheshortestrelative oftheKennedy’sextendedclan,untilhisfirst nephewcamealong-whopassedhimupat ageeleven.“UncleStubbs”ashemightbe knowninsomequarters.Caroletempered hisworstandbroughtouthisbest.Aftera confrontation,hewasalwaysthefirst tomakeamendsandworkedhard,sohard,at improvinghimselfasahumanbeing.

JonandCarolehadthreedissident/children, Cherrie,Yvette,andJonnywhomheloved unconditionally.DespitebeingaworldtravelerthroughhisemploymentatInternational HarvesterandhisregularweekendcommitmenttotheReserves,hewasaconstant anddeterminedpresenceinhischildren’s lives.Withinspiredhelpfromhiswife,he

foundtimetocoachbasketball,attendthe YMCA’sIndianGuides/Princesseswitheach kid,andbasically(sorryDad!)attendevery eventphysicallypossible.

Afterretirement,JonandCarolemoved fromElgintoOregonwheretheywerequicklyembracedbytheirnewcommunityincludingthewelcomingpeopleatSt.Mary’s CatholicChurch.Jontookhisextraordinary abilitytonapatnearlyanyoccasiontoanew levelthatcouldonlybedescribedasaconnoisseur.Alongwithhoningthistalent,Jon plungedintothelocalgolfscene.Hesavored golfwithfriends,hisleague,andhisgrandsons.Hesomehowscoredahole-in-oneat theSilverRidgeGolfcourse.Theprevailing theoryisthegrasswascutshort,theground wasdry,andtherepetitionofplayingas muchaspossibletogetthemostoutofhis membershipgreatlyincreasedtheodds.

InOregonJonandCarolefoundtruecamaraderiewithneighborsandfriendswhoall assumedanastoundingcertaintyofhowthis worldshouldoperate.Anddespitethemove tothisNorth-CentralIllinoiscommunity,the membersofCaroleandJon’sbelovedCard Clubwouldcontinuetoendurehisconfidence for50years.

JonissurvivedbyhisincrediblewifeCarole, daughtersCherrieMusial(John),Yvette

Hubbman(Paul),sonJonathanRobeson Jr(Becky).,brothersRonny,Jerry,Nick,and sisterLeona.Hislegacyiscelebratedby grandsonsClay,Cliff,Nick,Ryan,JonathanIII, andgranddaughtersLouiseandElla.

Whilehisfamilydesperatelywanted moretimewithJon,theyareremindedthat hewasbornclosertothecivilwarthanthe dayheleftthisworld.Asanine-year-old, hesawSatchelPaigepitchforCleveland. JonclimbedthepyramidsofEgypt,closed businessdealsinBolivia,investedina racetrackinCubabeforeCastro’srevolution,andhedivedwhollyintotheexperienceofalovingfamilyman.Jonsawmuchin hisyearsandgotalotoutofthislife.

Despitemanypronouncedobjections,he lovedsomuchinthisworld,anditwaswell reciprocated.

DomKramerthrewahalfback-optiontouchdownpasstoBaylenDamhoffintriplecoverage with3:22leftfor thefinal marginofvictory.
