Mother Nature shines on 51st Autumn on Parade

AfterMotherNaturesmiledbig timeonthefirstdayoftheAutumnon Paradefestival,shecappeditoffwith anotherperfectdayonSunday.

“Theweatherwasagainfabulous,” saidDebbieDickson,festivalpresident.“Weareextremelypleasedwith theturnout.Weallknowweatherisa drivingforcewithanoutdoorevent andMotherNaturewasateamplayer thisyear!”

Sunandfall-liketempsbrought a large crowdouttothearrayoffamily-funeventsduringthetwo-dayfestivalheldindowntownOregon.

Saturday’s carshowhad138vehiclestakepartandthetractorshowhad about35antiquefarmtractorsondisplay.

Thisyear’stheme“Fallin’forOregon”felltogetherperfectlyforthefestival’sall-volunteercommitteethanks tosunnyskiesand70-degreeweather.

Civil War hits home with recent trip to battlefields

Acoupleofyearsago, David Poolehadloanedmeabig notebookofCivilWarletters ofLieutenantRichardWatsonof BrushPointnearSycamore,Illinois.

IwasfamiliarwithBrushPoint becausethatwasastopontheUndergroundRailroad.TheWatsonfamily couldverywellhavebeeninvolvedin thiseffort.

Iwasgettingreadytovisitthebattlegroundswherethe15thRegimentof NorthernIllinoishadbeeninvolvedso Istartedreadingsomeoftheletters Richardwrotehometohisfamily.

Richardwasnotwiththe15thbut hewasapartofthe36thofIllinois. Rereadinghisletterswouldget me in theframeofmindbeforethebattles sinceRichardhadtraveledsomeofthe sameplaceswherethe15thmarched.

Thenotebookwasstillinmybedroomonthecedarchestanditwas veryhandytorereadsomeofRichard’sletterstoseehisperspectiveof headingtowar.Hewasveryconcernedofsicknessandtryingtokeep himselfwell.

firstforFortDonelsoninTennessee.

Ithoughtofthemenmarchingover theterrain andIwasgladtobeskimmingalonginthecar.

The15thwouldhavebeenarriving byboatandwhentheygotthere,the battlewasover.Theyarrivedintime toburythedead.Bruce’sphonewas setupwithanappsowhenhepunched abuttonateachtourstop,avoice wouldexplainwhathadhappened many yearsago.Weended upover lookingtheCumberlandRiver.Itgave oneanamazingfeeling.

NextweheadedforPittsburgLand, Tennessee,andthebattleofShiloh Wesawmanysignsofwherethe15th ofIllinoishadfoughtsuchastheHornet’sNestwheremanyofthe155th gavetheirlives.

SarahBell’speachorchardwhere thefightinghadbeenintenseduring thebattleisnowlackingafewpeach trees.Theyareattemptingtore-create thisareaandmaybesomedayitwillbe fullofpeachtrees.Weendeduponthe banksoftheTennesseeRiverandit wasawesome.

Thenextday wewereinCorinth, Mississippi,andthecrossroadsofthe

twoimportantrailroads.Attherail roadmuseumweweretoldto“Turn onthelightsandenjoyyourselves sincewearegettingreadyforawedding.” Morenextweek.

Camp Grant was located along shore of Rock River

In1916with thewarinEurope raging,theU.S.expandedthe numberofarmybasesinthe country.InIllinois,FortSheridanwas locatednorthofChicagobutitslocationdidnotallow forexpansion.

ThankstoGovernorLowden, a locationsouthofRockfordalongthe shoresofRockRiverconsistingof 2,278acreswaschosen.Thiswasone of16newarmycampsconstructed acrossthecountry.

Thiswasquiteanundertaking. These16campsrequiredanexpenditureof$150millionandwouldrequire fourbillionboardfeetoflumber 177,000doorswereneededwith46,000 waterclosetsand38,000showerheads andmorethan200,000kegsofnailsto bedistributedin5,000railcarsfor eachofthe16camps.

CampGrantwasnamedafterGeneralUlyssesS.Grant,formerlyaresidentofIllinoisinGalenaandPresidentoftheU.S.

Therewere50steamheatingplants thatsuppliedsteamcarriedthrough32 milesofpipesupplyingheatto1,250 buildingsatthecamp. TheCamp Grantbarrackseachcontainedarec-

reationroom,diningroom,kitchen andsleeping quartersfor200men. CampGrantDepot builtin1917providedpassengerserviceat the camp.

TheCB&QRailroadspurranfrom KingstoCamp Grant.Thecamphad itsownfiredepartment,whichwas a necessitywithmorethan1,000wood buildings.Therewereseveralsurgical trainingroomsandanoperatingroom wheresurgerieswereperformedfor on-basepersonnel.

AfterWWI,CampGrantwasturned backtothestateofIllinois.Itwasused asasummercampforunitsoftheIllinoisNational Guard.Thenduringthe

depression, theCivilianConservation Corpsoccupiedthebarracksandmess halls.

DuringtheWWIIerain1940,the U.S.reactivatedthefortandinvested $9milliontoremodelthebuildings and added365newbuildingstothe camp.Thisbecameamajorreception center.In1843,theWomen’sArmy Corparrived.

Whenthewarwasover,itbecamea processingcenterforthoseending theirservice.Thesemenwouldarrive bytrooptrains,havetheirfinalphysicalandpaperworkcompletedbefore

returninghomemostly byrail.Rich Rhoadsremembershisfather being processedatCampGrantduring WWII.

So,CampGrantwasoriginallyfarm land,thenaWWIcamp,anIllinois NationalGuardfacility,aNational CivilianConservationCorps(CCC Camp)aWWIIArmyMedicalTrain ing Center,aPOWcamp andnow a verylargeRockfordAirport.

The9-poundhelmettopped off62 poundsofarmor“theknight”toldthe crowd.

“Itwasreally heavy and mademy neckstiff,”saidAlessi,whostandsat 4-foot-4.

Dixon school shooter gets 30 years, must serve 85%

DIXON–MatthewMilbyJr.was sentenced Tuesdayto30yearsin prisonforbringinganUzitograduationpracticeandshootingatateacher andtheDixonHighschoolresource officeronMay16,2018.

Milby,whopleadedguiltyJuly14to twocountsofaggravateddischargeof afirearm,wassentencedto30yearson eachcount,termstobeservedconcurrently.

“Ican’tundowhatIdid,butIcan takeresponsibilityformyactionsand apologize,”MilbytoldJudgeJohnC. Redingtonafterlisteningtoseveral victimimpactaccounts,includingone fromthen-schoolresourceofficer Mark DallasandteacherAndrew McKay,whomheshotat.

“Ihopethatthisstatementbrings somepeacetothosewhowereaffected bymyactions.”

The23-year-oldmustserveatleast 25years,sixmonthsbeforebeingeligibleforparole.

Healsowasgivencreditfor1,601 daysservedinLeeCountyjailsince hisarrestthatdaynearlyfourand a halfyearsago.

Thatwillmakehimatleast45years oldwhenheisfreed.

State’sAttorneyCharleyBoonstra wasaimingforsomethingcloserto releaseatage70.

HeaskedRedingtonfor30yearson eachcount,termstorunconsecutively,whichwouldbe“commensuratewiththehorrors”Milbybrought downonhisclassmates,highschool staff,firstrespondersandthecommunity.

Milby’s attorney,EricArnquistof Rochelle,askedfor10years,citinghis client’slackofcriminalhistory,his “nightmare”ofachildhood,whichrelativestestifiedwasrifewithdomestic abuse,andhismentalhealthissues.

Milbywasfoundnotfittostand trialthreetimessincehisarrest,for refusingtoeatproperlyandtakehis medicationwhileinjail,mostrecently atahearinginMay2021.

Thatdoor“swingsbothways,” Boonstrasaid,notingthatMilby’s mentalhealthdidnotbecomeanissue untilayearintohisincarceration.

Nonetheless,“thatiswhatmakes

thisdefendantsodangerous”–hestill willbeathreatwhenheisreleased,he said.

“Hewaswillingtotakealife,” Boonstrasaid,addingthatMilby’spresentencereportnotedthathehadtold investigators “hisplanwastobecome acareercriminal.”

Milby’schoiceswerehisown. He can’tblamehisparents,Boonstrasaid.

“Thiscaseisnotaboutfitness.... It’saboutMatthewMilbytakingagun toschoolandshootingit.”

A60-yearsentencewouldserveasa deterrenttoanyoneelsewhoplanned to survivesuchashootingandalso wouldhelpthecommunityheal,he said.

“Weareaskingthecourtforasentencethatshowsthecommunitythat theirscreamsonMay16,2018,are beingheard.”

AlsoTuesday,severalpeopleread orhadreadforthemvictimimpact statements,includingDallas;hiswife, Jennifer;McKay;hiswife,Cassie; their10-year-olddaughter;JaredShaner,DHSprincipalwhowastheathleticdirectoratthetime,talkingwith Dallasinhisofficenearthegymwhen Milbyarrived,andformerstudents DerekHumphreyandMadisonWolfley.

“IamavictimofMatthewMilby,” Dallas’statementbegan.“Butnomore sothanyou....Weareallvictimsofthe

seeminglyendlessmilitiaofschool shooterswho infect ournationlike cancer.”

McKaytalkedabouthis“increased situationalawareness,”andtheenduringtraumahe, his wifeandchildstill dealwith.

ThenhetoldMilbyheforgavehim.

“SomethingI’vestruggledwith sinceithappened, butIonceheard a preachersay,youcanhatethesin,but yougottalovethesinner...Iforgive you asaperson;Idon’tholdany grudges...

“I’mnotexcusingthedecisionsthat leadtoyouractionsthatday,Ithink

youneedtobeheld accountablefor whateverthejudgedecidestoday,but attheendofthat,myprayerforyou willbethatwhateversentence.. that youserve, duringthat,youwillfind whateverpeace,whateveritisyou need,sothatwhenyouarereleased youcanrejoinsocietyandbeaposi tiveand publicmemberof whatever communityyouchoosetolivein.”

ItwasonFacebookthatIlearned the1972 undefeatedMt. Morrisfootballteamhada50-yearreunionatIdle Hour.IrememberBobHansonmentioningthistomebackinJanuary,but Ihadn’tthoughtmuchaboutituntil theFacebookpost.

Prettycoolseeingphotosofthe guysandsomeofthecheerleaders(I assume)gatheredforphotosdecades later.

Itwasjustacoupleofdaysbefore onFacebookthatIglimpseda1971 photooftheOregonHawkfootball team,alsoundefeatedMidNorthern champs.Onecommentmadewasthat thisteamwouldhavebeengood enoughtowinstate.

Unfortunately, theplayoffsdidn’t beginuntil1974andMt.Morrisand Oregonnevergotachancetoseehow theywouldhavestackedupagainst the bestinIllinois.Butthereisone advantagetothat.

teamsthatloseintheplayoffs.Atleast Mt.MorrisandOregonhavethesatisfactionofgoingoutasundefeatedconferencechamps.Itmaynotseemlikea bigdealnowadays,butinthepre-playoffsera,therewasnothingbetter.

Inlight ofMt.MorrisandOregon consolidating,peopleoften mention howgoodthefootballandbasketball teamswouldhavebeenintheearly ’70sifthatwasthecase.

Oneimportantdistinctiontomake isthatthecombinedenrollmentof bothschoolsbackthenwascloseto900 students.Nowitisaround400andalso withdemographicsnotasconducive tosportsprowess.

ThecurrentHawksfootballteam droppedto1-5withalossto Genoa-Kingston, two townsthat have beentogetherasajointschooldistrict since1948.

Likethey’vedoneinalmostevery gamethisyear,Oregonlookedimpressiveearlyon,effectivelymovingthe ball.

Giant pumpkins returned again to Autumn on Parade

TheresaMillerneededaveryspecialingredientthisyeartocoax “TwaddleD2”pastthehalf-tonmark.

“ShestartedgrowinglatesoIhada longtalkwithherand thenItoldmy husband that shewasgoingtobethe ‘one’andthenshejusttookoff,”Miller said.

That“takingoff”wasthegiant pumpkingrowingtoawhopping1,032 pounds–Miller’slargestpumpkinof hergrowingcareer.

TwaddleD2andherpatchmate Tankweremovedtodowntown OregononSept.29tobeondisplayatthe AutumnonParadefestival.

Atasvelte615pounds,Tankandhis bigsistercouldbeseeninthe100block ofSouthFifthStreet,westofthehistoricOgleCountyCourthouse,rightin thecenterofthetwo-dayfallfestival.

Butthejourneytothefestival groundsthisyearwasnotaneasyone.

“Wehadsomuchwaterwithallthe rain,” saidMiller,whogrowsthe pumpkinsatherhomeinruralStillmanValley.“Whenyouhavethat muchwateryouhopeandpraythe pumpkinstaysdryunderneath.They sitonstyrofoamonsand,butyou don’tknowiftheyaresolidunderneathuntilyouliftthemupandhave alook.”

Millerandherhusband,Keith, havegrownpumpkinsforeightyears, butmovedontothegiantslastyear. Becausegiantpumpkinsneedalotof

sun,theMillersalsogrowthegiants onpropertyownedbytheirneighbors, JoeandSandyYockey,thathasmore sunexposure.

Thatproperty,locatedacrossthe roadfromtheMiller’s,hasnotdisappointed,rewardingtheMiller/Hockey teamwithBigMamaandTwaddle Buttlastyearandthree giants this year.

TheseedswereplantedonMother’s Dayandafterdailytending–including shadeforhotdays,fertilizer,water, andplentysweet talkandsweat–the Millerscreatedthisyear’sbatch.

“Iplantedsixgiantsthisyearand weendedupwiththree,”Theresasaid. “Welefttheother1,000-pounderat home.”

TwaddleD2camefromaseedfrom lastyear’sTwaddleButtwhotipped thescaleat760pounds.

Duringthesummer,thepumpkins arecoveredwithsheetstoprotect themfromcrackinginthesun.

Theresaalsomadesuretherewas onlyonepumpkinpervineandkepta steadyoutlookforparasitesthatcould havedamagedtheplants.

Shealsohastorepositionthepumpkinswhentheystarttogrowsoasnot todamagetheirstems.

TwaddleD2’sstemhasadiameter between5-6inches.

“Youhavetopositionthemjust right,”shesaid.“Ipickofflittleones thatwanttogrow.Theleavesarevery importantandneedtobehealthy. Theykindofactlikesolarpanelsto feedthevine.Wehadonethatwasat 300pounds,butthenstoppedgrowing. Youhavetodecidewhoyouaregoing tokeep.”

Theweightofthepumpkinsisesti-

matedbymeasuringthepumpkinand thenusingaformulatogettheweight.

TwaddleD2finishedfifthatagiant pumpkincontestinMinooka.

Thatwinnerweighedinat1,800 pounds.

WhenTwaddleD2’sfestivaltour endedSunday,shereturnedhome whereKeithwillcarveheroutsothe Millers’fivegrandchildrencanclimb inside,justintimeforHalloween.

Theremainderofthepumpkinsare placedinabackfieldwheredeereat theminJanuary,Theresasaid.

Theresasaidgrowinggiantshas becomesomewhatofanaddiction.

“ItoldmyhusbandthataftertheseI wasdone,buttheneighthourslater I startedplanningfornextyear,”she said.“Ihave someseedsfrom an 1,800-pounderthatIamgoingto plant.”
