Blanche Jones Charitable Trust donates $24,000

Twenty-oneyearsafteritsformation,theBlancheM.JonesCharitable Trustcontinues tohelp twoPoloentitiesdonating$24,000thisyear.

ThePoloAreaSeniorCenter recentlywasgiven$14,000andthePolo PublicLibrary$10,000,saidPaula Faivre,oneofthetrusteeadvisers.

ThetrustwascreatedbyJonesin 2002tobeusedforcharitablepurposes uponherdeath,Faivresaid.Jonesdied onOct.20,2004,atage86.Thetrust begandistributingfundsin2007.

“Blanchelistedtheprioritiesofthe trusttobethePoloAreaSeniorCenter andthePoloLibrary,”Faivresaid. “Blanchewasanavidreaderandused thePoloLibraryoften.”

FirstStateBankShannon-Polois thetrustee.Jonesleftalistofindividualsfromwhomsheaskedthebankto selecttrusteeadvisers.

Eachyear,thebankinformsFaivre andtheothertwotrusteeadvisers –MikeDavisandPerryByers–how muchtheyneedtodistribute,Faivre said.She,DavisandByersaskthe seniorcenterandlibraryfora“wish list,”andthenmeettodiscussandvote onhowmuchmoneyshouldgotoeach entity.

Asof2022,theBlancheM.Jones CharitableTrusthasgiven$240,075to thePoloPublicLibraryand$271,419to thePoloAreaSeniorCenter.

New community plaza planned for downtown Oregon

Thedesignofthebuilding’s interior andtheexteriorspacewillallowfor flexibility when itcomestohowitgets used,Williams said.

Oregon CityCouncilmembersallocated$60,000of AmericanRescue Plan Actfundstocreate anewpublicmultiuseandgreenspace –theSarahPhelps CommunityPlaza–inwhatusedtobe adrive-throughbank.

“Wealways hadavisionthatthere wasmuchmoretherethanafamily restroom,”MayorKenWilliamssaid “It’sbasicallybeenlockedupandnot used.”

CityCouncil members votedunanimouslytoallocatethefundsduring theirFeb.14meeting.Williamssaid bidswillbeopenFeb.15.

Thesmallbuilding, locatedonthe

northeast cornerofNorthFifthand Washingtonstreets,previouslywas a drive-upfortheRockRiverBank, whichlaterbecameHarvardState Bank.HarvardState Bank constructed anewbankanddrive-thruoneblock westatNorthSixthandWashington.

ThecitypurchasedtheolddrivethrulocationinDecember 2017with thehelpoflocalbanksinapublic-private partnership,Williams said.

Thecityinstalled afamilyrestroom inJuly 2018, butotherupdatesonthe building’sinteriorwereputonhold becauseofalackofavailablefunds, Williamssaid.

Theestimatedconstructioncostfor thebuildingandoutsideelementsis $80,000,Williamssaid.Ofthat,$24,000 willcomefrompublic-private partnershipfundsandthecitywillcoverthe remaining$56,000.

HelistedFirstFriday musicevents, LionsClubpork choplunchesandcitizen“blockparties”aspossibleways thepubliccoulduse thespace.

“Anybodyinthecommunitycould useit,”Williamssaid.“Wewouldhave anominalrentingfeetomakesureit wasclean.”

Insidewillmostlybeopen,butwill includeasinkandrefrigerator,he said.Additionally,theexistingwindowswillbeswitchedoutforsliding ones,allowing walk-upservicewhen thebuilding is in use.

Theoutdoorplaza spacewillinclude movabletables,greenspace,parking, bicyclestandsandadditionaloutlets foroutside events,Williamssaid.The bathroomwill remain.

“It’sgoingtolooklikeananchorto ourdowntownandhistoricdistrict,” hesaid.

Ourprogramwillbeaboutageneralmerchandisebusinessthat CharlesFinchBarberstartedin1855 onthecornerofMasonandDivision. EventuallyHoughHardwarecameto Polointothisbuildingandwasthere formanyyears.

ThenHoughHardwarewentback toMt.Morrisanddevelopedmore thanahardwarestore.RobHoughwill bringusuptodate.Sokeeptheprogramdateinmindandjoinusatthe PoloHistoricalSocietyonMarch 1.

Alsoafewmoreaddedcomments onestablishingNorthernIllinoisUniversitymanyyearsagoin1895.

JesseSchyrverwasbornFeb.11, 1914,toErastusWebsterSchryverand Rosene“Rosie”GlockSchryver.Jes-

se’sparentsweremarriedonFeb.14, 1912,soobviously Februarywasan importantmonthintheSchryverfamily.

Letuslookbackattheweddingof Erastus andRosieforjustalittlebit. TheyweremarriedinJordanatthe homeofRosie’sgrandmother,Mrs. AugustaBort,at12o’clockonValentine’sDayin1912.Thebridewore a gownofcreammessalineandIhadto lookupinmylargedictionary to see what kindoffabricRosie worethat day.Messaline isalustroustwilled silkfabric.

Rosie’ssister,Lina,wasmaidof honorandRoyFordwasthebestman. Wasthis theRoyFordthatwasinmy neighborhood?Idonotknow.Rosie hadlivedwithhergrandmotherfor nineyearsinWestJordan.

AfterMarch1,thehappycouple, ErastusandRosie,weregoingtolive onafarmownedbythegroom’sfather Mr.BertSchryver,wholivednear Hazelhurst.

Aswelookedatthepictures,at somepointIsaidtoLindathatthey resembledaCCCcampandIwascorrectonlyitwasnottheoneatthe WhitePinesStatePark.

In1934, Jessebecame partofthe CivilianConservationCorpinCamp BerthaHillinIdahoandJessewas a writer.Helovedtowritelettersback totheTri-County Pressofhisadventures.

LindaandIstoppedoursortingof pictureslongenoughsoIcouldshow andtellLindaallabouttheCCCCamp nearPolo Wehave awonderfularea ofhistoryofthiscampinthemuseum withalargedisplaycaseofinformation,picturesandmemorabiliaofthis timeframe.

Lincoln connections in Polo, Stillman Valley, Oregon

Polo,StillmanValleyandOregon arethreelocationsinOgleCountythat AbrahamLincolnvisitedwhilehewas livinginIllinoisfrom1830to1861.

Lincolnservedasavolunteerinthe IllinoisMilitiafromApril21toJuly16 in1832duringtheBlackHawkWar. Heneversawcombatduringhistour butwaselectedcaptainofhisfirst company.

Heservedfollowingtwoofthewar’s battleswherehehelpedburythemilitiadead.Duringthistimehevisited StillmanValleythreetimes.Heand hismenwereinvolvedincleaningup afterStillman’sdefeat.

TheIllinoisGeneralAssembly appropriated$5,000toerectaStillman RunMarker, whichwasdedicated June 11,1902,andisnowlocatedat StillmanValley.

TheLincolnMonumentatDixonis abronzestatueofAbrahamLincoln thatcommemorateshisservice inthe BlackHawkWar.Thismonumentis locatedneartheformerlocationof FortDixon.

Someofthetroopsthatwere involvedinthe BlackHawkWar, includingLincoln,stoppedatFort DixonontheirwaytoStillmanValley.

LincolnspokeinOregononAug.15,

1856, duringacampaigneventfor JohnFremont,aRepublicanPresidentialhopeful.

Lincolnand“LongJohn”Wentworth,asix-termCongressmanand latermayorofChicago,wereamong theseveralspeakersatthepolitical rallyforJohnC.Fremont.

Thenightbefore,Lincolntraveled toPoloontheIllinoisCentralRailroad andwasguestofSen.ZenasAplington.

LincolnrodetheIllinoisCentralRailroadthreeyearsafteritwascompleted throughOgleCountyin1856from WoosungtoPolo.

Aplington,thefounderofPolo,was aRepublicanandfriendofLincoln.

TheLincoln-Fremont eventinOregonwasheldat505N.FourthSt. A brassbandstartedtheprogramfollowedbyaprayer.Duringtheprayer the60-footplatformholding 50people

collapsed.LincolnandWentworth werenotontheplatform.

Theprogramlastedtwoandahalf hours.TheonlyaccountofLincoln’s speechwasthathetalkedaboutthe MissouriCompromise.Aftertheprogrambothspeakerswereentertained atMoore’sHotel,nowthePatchwork Inn.LincolnalsovisitedtheHenry Mixofficeandhishome.

It’sinterestingthatLincolnwasin twobusinessestablishmentsandone residenceinOregon,Illinois.Hespoke inOregon16yearsbeforethefirst trainarrivedinOregonand44years beforethefirstcarpassedthrough Oregon.

OurfounderJohnPhelpswas50 yearsoldwhenLincolnspokehere.So LincolntraveledtoPolobytrainand thenrodeinahorsedrivenvehicle to Oregon.

TodayonIllinoisRoute2inOregon, wetravelbyastonemarkingwhere Lincolnspokeat505N.FourthSt. HeadingsouthonIllinois2,wepassby the LincolnandBlackHawkstatue “PathsofConviction,Footstepsof Fate”createdbyJeffAdamsin2002.

McCombie announces office locations, traveling office hours

StateRep.TonyMcCombiehas reopenedherSavannaofficeand announcedtravelingofficehoursin OgleCounty forFebruary.

Recentreorganizationhasbeen completedtobetterservethe89th legislativedistrict,whichincludes allofCarrollandJoDaviess counties,aswellaspartsofStephenson, Winnebago,Boone,Ogleand DeKalbcounties,McCombiesaidin anews release.

Big surge in wild turkey harvest

BowhuntersinOgleCountyharvestedthestate’ssecond-highesttotal ofwildturkeysduringtheseason betweenOct.1andJan.15.

Statewide,itwasthethird-highest turkeyharvestonrecord,theIllinois DepartmentofNatural Resources reported.Alltold,801wildturkeys wereharvested.That’sup from 683in thepreviousyear.

TheIDNRsaidtheharvestwas52% hensthisyear.

VermilionCountyhadthebiggest harvestat27,anincreasefrom12the yearbefore.Likewise,OgleCounty

had24,anincreaseover14fromthe previousseason.

InotherSaukValleyareas,the resultsvaried.CarrollandWhiteside countieseachhad10,anincreaseover sixandseventhepreviousyear, respectively.

Twocountieswereindecline:Lee Countydroppedfrom11toeight,while BureauCountyfellfrom12tofive.

AccordingtotheIDNR,therewere 25,373permits,whichwas605more thanthepreviousseason.AllIllinois countieswereopenforturkeyhunting.

“Constituentservicesandgettingaroundmylegislativedistrict hasbeenmytoppriorityoverthe lastsixyears.My teamand Iare readytohelpyounavigateissues and/orconcernswithstateagencies,toprovideupdatesonstatelegislativeissues,andtohearfeedback fromyou,”McCombiesaid.
