Oregon High School’s ‘Ms. Rad’ one of five finalists for National Teacher of Year

KimberlyRadostits’excitementat beingselectedasafinalistfor2023 NationalTeacheroftheYear is temperedbythe sorrowthatcomesfrom missingherstudentsandcolleagues intheOregonSchoolDistrict.

“Thoughthisisagreathonor,it also comeswiththeresponsibility thatistakingmeawayfromthepeoplethatfillmyheart,”saidRadostits, whoteachesSpanishatOregonHigh School.“Mynetworkisgrowing,and that’sbeenwonderful,butit’shardto beawayfromthepeoplethatfillmy bucket all the time.”

OnJan.25,Radostits–knownas Ms.Radtomostaroundher–was namedoneoffivefinalistsfor2023 NationalTeacheroftheYear.The announcementcame10monthsafter the37-year-oldFairdaleresidentwas pickedasthe2022IllinoisTeacherof theYear.

TheNationalTeacheroftheYear Program was createdin 1952 andis runbytheCouncilofChiefState SchoolOfficers,anationalnonprofit organizationthatrepresents58leadersofK-12educationsystemsinthe U.S.anditsterritories.

Thisyear,finalistswere selected fromacohortof55.Theotherfourare HarleeHarvey,afirst gradeteacher fromAlaska;CarolynKielma,ahigh schoolscienceteacherfromConnecticut;JermarRountree,apre-K-8physicaleducationandhealthteacherfrom Washington,D.C.;andRebeckaPeterson,ahighschoolmathteacherfrom Oklahoma.

TheNationalTeacheroftheYear winnerwillbeannouncedinMarch, followingfinalistinterviews with a selectioncommittee.Thewinnerwill spendayearservingasanambassadorforeducationandasanadvocate forotherteachersandtheirstudents.

Theawardwascalled“themost prestigioushonorthatateachercan earnintheentirecountry,”Illinois StateSuperintendentofEducation Carmen AyalasaidduringWednesday’snewsconferenceattheOregon SchoolDistrictoffice.

“TobenamedoneofjustfivefinalistsintheentirecountryspeaksvolumesaboutthekindofeducatorMs.

Radisandthekindofimpactthatshe hashadhereatOregonHighSchool,” Ayalasaid.“Icouldn’tbehappierthan tohaveMs.Radrepresentingourstate ofIllinoisatthenationallevel.”

AyalasaidshewasstruckbyRadostits’accomplishments:contributions thatextendinandoutoftheclassroom.AyalasaidRadostits’messageis teachingisfundamentallyaboutrelationshipsandstudentsmustknow thattheireducatorscarebeforethey’ll careaboutlearning.

“Educationisatthefoundationof oursociety,andtheteachingprofessionisfullofamazingeducatorswho aregivingtheirbesttostudentseach andeveryday,”Radostitssaid.“Inmy 16yearsintheprofession,Ihaveexperiencedatremendousamountofjoyas Ihavegrownalongsidemystudentsin theclassroomandthecolleaguesin mybuilding.

“IlovebeingMs.Rad,andIlove wearingeveryhatthatcomeswith thatrole,”sheadded. “I’msoincrediblyproudoftheworkthatisdonein schools,notonlyhereinOregon, but acrossthestateandthenation.”

Shepointedtothe COVID-19pandemicandhow“wewereallasked to dotheunimaginable”atitsonset.

Threeyearslater,Radostitsisconfidentthatthoseinvolvedintheeducationsystemhavegrownstrongerand repeatedlyprovedthemselves“capableofamazingthings.”

OregonHighSchoolprincipalHeidi DeiningercalledRadostitsachampion,aproblem-solverandatrailblazerforanyoneandeveryoneconnectedtotheeducationprofession. Positivelyimpactingandchangingthe livesofherstudentsisherNo.1priority,Deiningersaid.

Radostitsisateacher whohasnot onlythecontentknowledgeandskills toteach,butalsounderstandsthat teachinglifehabitstoenablefuture successandofferingcontinuingsup-

portispartofwhatstudentsneedto grow,saidTomMahoney,Oregon SchoolDistrict Superintendent. Radostitsneverforgetsstudents healthandwell-being,headded.

“Ms. Radembodies allofthequalitiesthatnotonly makeupanexceptionalteacher,butalsoamentor,”said AlyssaLeary,anOregonHighSchool junior.“Ms.Radisalwaysgoingabove andbeyondtomakesureeverysingle studentinthebuildingknowsthat theyare important,supportedand loved.Whetheritbetalkingwithher forjustaminuteoranhour,Ms.Rad alwaysmakesyoufeellike youmatter.”

Leary saidRadostitsis“alightin theworld”whoinspiresotherstobe betterversionsofthemselves.

Radostitssaidshestronglybelieves relationshipscanovercomeallobstacles.Thereispowerinmentoringand inrelationshipsbetweeneducators, studentsandparents,aswellasthe greatercommunity.

“Weneedtohavethoseimportant conversationsinorderforustotransformeducationandmakeitsomething thatwe’reproudofbecausethesepeoplearetheonesthatarecarryingthe torch,”Radostitssaid.

Trial date set for man charged with attempted murder of deputy at end of high-speed chase

AFebruaryjury trialhasbeenset foranOhiomanwhoisaccusedof attemptingtokillanOgleCounty Sheriff’sdeputywithhiscartoavoid beingarrestedafterahigh-speedchase inNovember.

BrianK.Taylor, 49, ofMassillon, Ohio,appearedincourtJan.25with PublicDefenderMichaelO’Brien,who askedJudgeJohnRedingtontoset a dateforajurytrial.

TaylorwasarrestedNov.22and chargedwithtwocountsofattempted first-degreemurder,onecountof aggravatedbatterytoapoliceofficer, onecountofaggravatedassaultof a policeofficer,twocountsofaggravatedfleeingorattempting toelude a policeofficer,onecountofunlawful displayofalicenseplateandonecount ofClassAspeeding35-plusmphover thespeedlimit.

Hehaspleadednotguiltythe charges.

“Weareaskingforatrialdatetobe set,”O’Briensaid.

“Doyouagree?”Redingtonasked AssistantOgleCountyState’sAttorneyMatthewLeisten.

“Yes,”Leistensaid.

RedingtonsetthejurytrialforFeb. 21and22.Hetoldbothattorneyshe expects allmotionstobefiledbyFeb. 14andsetapretrialhearingfor1p.m. Feb.15.

“Allmotionsinlimineneedtobein byFeb.14,”Redingtonsaid.

Taylorhasbeenincustodyinthe Ogle CountyCorrectionalCenteron $500,000bondsincehisarrestafterthe Nov.22incident.

DuringapretrialhearingDec.7, PatrolSergeantMichaelHalfmantestifiedthathethoughthewas“goingto die”whenhewasstandingbyhis stoppedsquadwhenTaylorveeredhis vehicleathimwhilefleeingaStephensonCountysheriff’sdeputy.

Halfmantestifiedhehadbeendispatchedat12:15p.m.toassistwith a high-speedchasethat hadoriginated inStephensonCounty.Hesaidhehad parkedhissquadcarattheintersectionofFreeportandMilledgeville roadsinOgleCountyandwasreadyto

deploy“stopsticks”toflattenTaylor’s tireswhenhesawTaylorandtheStephensonCountysquadcomingat a “highrateofspeed”inthesouthbound lane.

HesaidTaylor’sMazdaswerved into thenorthboundlaneandthen directlyathimcausinghimto“shuffle”totrytoavoidbeinghitasthe Mazdaveeredintotheditch.

“Ithoughthewasgoingtohitme.I thoughtIwasgoingtodie,” Halfman saidattheDecemberhearing.

Earlierinthepreliminaryhearing, StephensonCountyDeputyAnthony Millertestified hestartedpursuing Taylorabout11:59a.m.inDakota,Illinois,onRoute75,afterclockinghimat 70mphina55mphzone.

MillersaidhepursuedTaylorto U.S.Route20whenherealizedhewas fleeing.HesaidTaylormade“abrupt turns”andwentthroughaditchand overamedianwhile“appearingto smile”beforeenteringFreeport.He saidTaylordisobeyedstopsignsand trafficsignalsduringthepursuitwith speedsreaching110mphwhen going westonRoute20.

Brian K. Taylor has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His next court date is Feb. 15.

Thechasethenwentsouthinto OgleCountyonIllinoisRoute26and eventuallyFreeportRoad.

AsthevehiclesreachedtheintersectionofFreeportandMilledgeville roads,Millersaidhecouldclearlysee Halfmanandhisparkedsquadinthe northboundlane.HesaidTaylor’s MazdaveeredtowardHalfmanand thentheditchbeforeenteringthe ditchandthenexitingtheditch,eventuallystrikinghissquadcar.

Taylor’scarcame to restinthe ditchandTaylorwasapprehended.

Thejury trialisscheduledtobegin at9a.m.Thepretrialhearingisscheduledfor1p.m.

AsoftodayIhavegreat respectfortheweatherpeople.Whentheysayitwill startsnowingat9,theymean9.Not 8 or10,but9,andthatisexactlywhenit startedonSaturday morningsoon afterIleftthehouse.

Ienjoyhavingbreakfastwith friends, butifthestreetsorsidewalks areslipperyorsnowy,Idonotventure out.

Onthis particularday Ithought I couldmaybegetoutandbackhome againbeforethestormstartedbut I waswrong.AfterInegotiatedthefew icepatches,Isettledmyselfinmy chair,lookedoutthewindow,andthe snowhadstarted.Itwas9o’clockand whileIwasout,Ihadtogetbackhome again.

BythetimeIwasreadytoleave,the streets,sidewalksandmycarwereall coveredwithsnow.Iwonderedif I couldrememberwheretheicepatches wereunderthesnow,butIdidnot havetoworry.OneofKenneth’scousinshelped metomycar, whichwas rightoutsidethedoorandIamvery thankful.

ForthePoloHistoricalSociety, LindaandIhadamysterytosolve. Recently,Ihadacallfrom afriendin Wisconsin.Shewaswritingher life historyand shewas puzzled about a collegeshewenttoyearsago.

Shewasasenior atPoloHigh Schoolandthetopofherclass.Several women inthecommunityapproached herabouthelpinghergetascholarshiptoHoodCollegeinFredrick, Maryland.Shenowwonderswhatwas theirconnectiontoacollegesofar away?

Shegavemethenamesofthe womenandIknewmostofthem.They wereMrs.W.T.Schell,Mrs.Helen

Bentley,Mrs.FannieSchryverand shethoughtMrs.RichardSchell. Lindastartedtolookupthewomen andIresearchedthecollege.

HoodCollegewasaprivateallwomen’scollegeandcameundertheauspicesoftheReformedChurchorthe UnitedChurchofChrist.ItwasconsideredthebestuniversityoftheNortheastandpreparedstudentsforprofessionalachievements. Inthehealth field,itwasconnectedwiththetop10 hospitalsinthatarea.In1971,itwas nolongerawomen’scollege.

HelenBentleydidnotseemtobe connectedtoHoodCollegealthough shewasateacheratCottageHill School.Sheleftteachingtobeapartof Bracken’sStyleShopinPolo.IrememberherinthestoreandIcorresponded withhersonDickBentley.

Mrs.W.T.SchellwasaLutheran andIrememberbeinginherhomeat onetime.ShewasthesistertoMartin SchryverIIandwedidnotseemtofind anydirectconnectiontohergoingeast tocollege.

InmymindIthoughtthatmaybe FannieSchryvermightbetheonewe

werelookingfortosolvethispuzzle. Rememberthat herhusband,Martin SchryverII,istheonethatownedall the NativeAmericanartifactsthat weregiventothelibraryandeventuallyallcametothePoloHistorical Society.

LindafoundherdeathdateasFeb. 20,1983,attheageof100.Shecouldnot seemtofindanobituarysowecontactedthePoloLibrary.Theyquickly cametoourrescueandwehadour answer.

Theobituarystated,“Upongraduating fromPoloHigh School,shecontinued her education at Hood College andtheNewEnglandConservatoryof Music.”

FanniemusthavelovedHoodCollegeandherstudyofmusic.Shewasa GetzendanerandthedaughterofMiltonandArabelleThomasGetzendaner.Ineedtofindoutmoreabout herandherfamily.

Early miners traveled up the Mississippi to Galena

In1825,sevenyearsafter Illinoisbecame a state,northernIllinoiswasstillawilderness. IfyouputaruleronthepresentmapofIllinois,fromPeoriatoChicagoandthenfromPeoriato Galena,inthatgreatareanowhitemanlived.

Formanyyears,wewerealandofIndiantrails Duringthistimeperiod,theherdsofbuffalohadcertainpathsleadingfromonegrazinggroundto another.

TheFeverRiverSettlement(Galenalead mines) wasthekeytoattractingsettlerstonorthernIllinois.From1825to1835,thefoundationswerebuilt forwhatwehavetoday.

Earlyleadminerstraveled upthe Mississippito theFeverRiverLeadMines,later namedGalena. Thefirstearlytrailtotheleadminesacrosscountry wasblazedbyKelloggin1825,sevenyearsafterIllinois wasfounded,sowewereawildernesseven thoughwewereastate.

OurearlytrailsacrossnorthIllinoisweretheKelloggTrail(1825),Crane’sTrail(1831),Chamber’s Trail(1831),PhelpsTrail(1834-5),Crane-PhelpsTrail (1834-35)andtheSavanna-FortDearbornTrail(183435).Theseearlywagontrailsmarkedthebeginning of today’sprominenthighways.

In1825theErieCanalopened.Thiscanallocated inNewYorkimpactedthegrowthofnorthernIllinois.AtthattimeitwascalledtheEighthWonderof theWorld.

TheErieCanallinkedtheEastCoasttotheMidwest.Beforethecanalthe AppalachianMountains presentedagreatchallenge.TheOhioRiverfacili-

tatedsettlementsinsouthernIllinoisandtheErie CanalfacilitatedsettlementsinnorthernIllinois.

Inthespringof1832newsoftheBlackHawkWar intheeasternnewspapersacquaintedthemtonorthernIllinois.AftertheBlackHawkWar,northern Illinoisentereduponaboomperiod.

Soldierswrotehomegivingglowingaccountsof themagnificentforestsandvirginprairies.Ten yearsafterOregonwasfoundedin1836settlers pouredintothisareafrommanypartsofthesouth andeast.DuringthistimeDixon’sFerrywasabusy place.

In1833thevillageofChicagowasincorporated andtravelfromtheeastbywaterbecameanimport-

antroutetonorthernIllinois.Threestagecoach lineswereinoperationwithroutesfromPeoriato DixontoencourageearlysettlementofnorthernIllinois.

Tosummarize,theGalenaleadmines,theBlack HawkWar,thevillage ofChicagoandthreestagecoachlinesallcontributedtothesettlementof northernIllinois.

Locally,JohnPhelps,founderofOregon,hashis impressivetombstonecentrallylocatedatthetopof thehillinRiversideCemetery.

Case continues for man accused of hitting one person, stabbing another on New Year’s Eve

AnOgleCountyjudgehasruled thatthecaseagainstaByronmanwho isaccusedofhittingonepersonwith hiscar andstabbinganotheronNew Year’sEveshouldcontinue.

JeremyG.Jones,41,ofByronand hisattorney,WilliamGibbs,appeared incourtforapreliminaryhearingon onecountofaggravatedbatterycausinggreatbodilyharmandtwo counts ofaggravatedbatterywithadeadly weapon.

Jonesalsoischargedwithunlawful possessionofcannabisbydriver, speedingandoperatinganuninsured motorvehicle,allstemmingfrom a Dec.31incidentinthe200blockof Route26indowntownForreston.

Jonespleadednotguiltytothe chargesanddemandedajurytrial afterJudgeJohnRedington’sdecision thatenoughprobablecauseexistedto continuethecase.Redingtonset Jones’nextpretrialhearingforFeb.8.

DuringtheJan.25hearing,Ogle CountyPatrolDeputyMatthewGendusa said he respondedtoanaltercationat10:40p.m.Dec.31inwhichit wasreportedthatonepersonhadbeen stabbedandanotherwashitbyavehicle.

Gendusasaidafemaledrivertold himshewasdrivinghertruckon Route26whena sedanbegantailgatinghernearForreston.

“WhenIarrived,shewasbeing treatedbyForrestonEMS,”Gendusa saidincourt.

Hesaidthewomantoldhimshe “brakechecked”threetimesbefore pullingthevehicleintoaparkinglotat Josh’sSaloon.

Amalepassengerinhertruck exitedthevehicleandapproachedthe sedan,exchangingwordswiththe driver,whowasidentifiedasJones. ThemantoldGendusathatJonessped upandhithim,promptingthewoman totrytostopthevehiclebygrabbingat thedriver’ssidewindow.

“Shesaidshefelt being struckby themaledriver,”Gendusasaid.

Witnessestoldhimthatthesedan thenleftthescene.

Afterthewomanwasquestionedby AssistantState’sAttorneyMatthew Leisten,Gendusasaidhelaterlearned that shehadsufferedastabwoundin theshoulderthatrequiredstitchesat FreeportHospital.Healsosaidhewas toldthatthemanhadsufferedaconcussionafterfallingdownwhenhe wasstruckbythesedan.

Oncross-examination,Gibbsasked Gendusaifheknewthatonlythe male’stoehadbeenrunover“afterhe immediatelyjumpedoutofthetruck” andconfrontedhisclient.

“Nobodytoldyouthathistoegot runover?”Gibbssaidincourt.

“Ibelievehetoldmehiskneesand shinhadbeenstruck,”Gendusasaid.

OgleCountyPatrolSgt.Michael Halfmantestifiedthathestopped Jones’sedanonRoute72afterbeing calledtoassistwiththeincident.He saidheidentifiedthecarfromapartial licenseplatenumber.

HalfmansaidJonescooperated withhisrequeststoshutoffthevehicle,tosshiskeysoutthewindowand exitthevehicle.

TherewerenoinjurieswhenaPoloschool busslidintoaditchonU.S.Highway52on Jan.26,accordingtodistrictofficials.

“It happenedonHighway52 on thecurve beforeFreeportRoad,”saidKellyMandrell, PoloSchoolDistrictsuperintendent.“Itwas icyandourbusslippedintotheditchalong with twoothercars ontheothersideofthe road.”

OgleCountySheriffBrianVanVicklealso saidtheincidentwasweather-related No oneintheothertwovehicleswasinjured, VanVicklesaid.

Thebusdriverandonestudentwere transportedtothehospitalasa precaution, Mandrellsaid.Studentsonthebusrangedin agefrompreschoolto12thgrade,shesaid.

Becauseoftheangleoftheditch,buspassengersusedthebus’backdoortoexitthe vehicle,Mandrellsaid.

“Wehadanotherbusmeetusthereand theytookthestudentsbacktoPoloCommunityHighSchool,”shesaid.

Thedistrictcalledparentsandguardians ofthestudentson thebus to notifythemof theincident,Mandrellsaid.Districtstaff startedmakingthecallsassoonastheywere awareofwhat hadhappened,butitdidtake sometimetomakeallthecalls,shesaid.

“Wefeltitwasbesttocallthempersonally soiftheyhadanyquestions,wecouldanswer them,”Mandrellsaid.

MandrellthankedtheOgleCountySheriff’sOffice,thePoloPoliceDepartmentand thePoloFireProtectionDistrictforrespondingtothescene.Shealsothankedstaffmembersforassistingwiththesituation.

Inclosingarguments,Gibbssaid probablecausedidnotexisttoholdhis clientandthatJoneswasonlydefendinghimselffrom“peoplewhojumped outoftheircar”andstartedscreaming athim.

“Therewasawomanhangingonto hiscartryingtoattackhim,”Gibbs said.

“Thedefendanthadaknifeonhis personthathadasubstanceonit. Thereis enoughprobablecausetocontinue,”Leistensaid.

Jonesinitiallywasarrestedfor attemptedfirst-degreemurder.Last week,OgleCountyState’sAttorney MikeRocksaidhisofficerevisedthe chargesafterreviewingreportsand speakingwithlawenforcement.

JonesremainsintheOgleCounty CorrectionalCenterona$120,000 bond.HisnextcourtdateisMarch8.

Playground equipment to be replaced at Mix Park

MixParkwillbegettingnewplaygroundequipmentlaterthisyear.

Thenewplaygroundequipment waspurchasedinDecember2022from GameTime,acommercialplayground provider.

ErinFolk,executivedirectorofthe OregonParkDistrict,saidthe district wasawarded$43,726ingrantfunding toassistinpurchasingthenewequipment.

“Playgroundreplacementhas been apriorityforthepastfewyearsand MixParkwasnextonthelist. Staff havedoneatremendousjobextending thelifeexpectancyoneachplayground,butthetimehascomefor a refreshatMixPark,”Folksaidin a newsrelease.

PartneringwithGameTime, a 2,600-square-footplaygroundproposal waspresentedtotheParkDistrict BoardforapprovalinNovember2022. Theplaystructurewillincludeplenty ofwaystoclimb,swing,slide,spinand

exploreforboththe2through5and 5 through12agegroups.Integrated shadewillprovideacoolandcomfortableplayenvironment.

Thenewequipmentwillreplacethe existingplaygroundthatwasinstalled in1999.

Theexistingplaygroundwillbe donatedtoKidsAroundtheWorld,an organizationbased in Rockford.Kids AroundtheWorldwillrefurbishthe existingplaygroundandreinstallitin apovertystrickencommunityabroad, Folksaid.

Playgroundinstallationwill occur inthespring,whenweatherpermits. MixParkamenitiesincludes2.4 acresofopenspace,aplayground, shelter, twopickleballcourtsandtwo sculpturesontheOregonSculpture Trail,Pathsof ConvictionandThe FishBoys.

Man killed in headon crash on I-39 in Winnebago County

A25-year-oldOgleCountymanisdeadand aWisconsinmaninjuredafteracrashMonday morningonInterstate39inWinnebago County.

AccordingtoanewsreleaseWednesday fromIllinoisStatePolice,JohnH.Danukof DavisJunctionwasdrivingnorthonI-39about 9:20a.m.when,forunknownreasons,he enteredthesouthboundlanesandhitacar drivenbyDavidJ.Henke,52,ofJanesville, head-on.

Thetwomenweretaken toanareahospital,whereDanukwaspronounceddead, accordingtotherelease.Henke’scondition wasunavailableWednesday.

Toxicologytests,butnotanautopsy,are beingdone,WinnebagoCountyCoronerJennifer Muraskisaid. Resultslikelywilltakeat leastsixweeks.

Overall,theregionalmaybethe toughestit’sbeen,withseveralstaterankedteamsinNo.4Oregon, No. 5 Le-Win/Stockton,No.6Dakota,No. 8 DixonandNo.9StillmanValley.

However,thereisnotthatonedominantteam,suchasDakotaand Le-Win,whohave acombinedseven statetitlesfrom2013-2020.Onlyone teamwilladvancefromtheregionalto contendforadual-meetstatetitleand itisaswideopenasit’severbeen.
