Moring Disposal sells to Republic Services

After45yearsinbusiness,MoringDisposalInc. solditsoperationsandlandtoRepublicServiceson Dec.15.

InajointannouncementpostedontheRepublic website,bothcompaniespromisedcustomers a seamless transitionandsaidthatcustomerfees, invoices,paymentlocations,garbagecollectionday andcustomerservicephonenumberswouldremain thesame.

CustomersalsocancontinuetousetheirMoring trashandrecyclingcontainers.Somewillcontinue toseeMoringDisposaltruckspickinguptheirwaste.

MoringDisposalalwayshasbeenafamily-owned operation.Inalettersenttosomecustomers,owner LarryMoring saidthedecisiontoselldidnotcome lightly,but heassuredcustomerswouldcontinueto receivethesamelevelofservicewithRepublic.

TheArizona-basedcompanypurchasedtheRock Fallspropertyat2110McNeilRoadfor$964,800and fiveparcelsoflandinForrestonfor$749,369.

An Oregonwomanaccusedofkillingher7-yearoldsonin2021won’thavetoappearincourtuntil FebruaryafteranOgleCountyjudgegranted a defenserequestforacontinuance.

SarahSafranek,35,appearedinOgleCounty CourtonDec.28viaavideoconferencefromthe OgleCountyCorrectionalCenter.

Safranekhaspleadednotguiltytofivecountsof first-degreemurderandonecountofaggravated batteryforthesuffocationdeathofherson,NathanielBurton,inFebruary2021.

OnNov.3,JudgeJohnRedingtonruledSafranek wasfittostandtrialfortheoffensesafterreviewing amentalhealthevaluationrequestedbythedefense.

OnWednesday,OgleCountyPublicDefender KathleenIsleyaskedforthecontinuance,noting thatsheandanotherpublicdefenderwereplanning onmeetingwithSafranekagainnextweek.

Ogle CountyState’sAttorneyMikeRockdidnot objecttothecontinuance.

Redingtonsaidthehearingwould resumeat 1p.m.Feb.15.

Man arrested for attempted murder on New Year’s Eve

AByronmanwasarrestedfor attemptedmurderafterpolicesayhe ranonepersonoverwithhisvehicle andstabbedanotherinaForreston parkinglotonNewYear’sEve.

JeremyG.Jones,41,ofByron,was arrestedforattemptedmurder,aggravatedbatterywithamotorvehicle, aggravatedbatterywithadeadly weaponandimpropercontainer/ driver,accordingtoanOgleCounty Sheriff’sOfficenewsrelease.Jones wastransported totheOgleCounty Jailandheldinlieuofbond.

“Theearlyinvestigationindicates thatthiswasaroadrageincidentthat escalated,”SheriffBrianVanVickle said.

Hesaidthereappearstohavebeen “sometypeofincident”outsideForreston,afterwhichthetwovictims stoppedtheirvehicleinaparkinglot withinthevillage.Itwasthenthat Jones attackedthevictims,VanVicklesaid.

VanVickledidnotknowthehealth statusofthetwovictims.

Thealtercationoccurredat10:40 p.m.onDec.31inthe200blockof1st Avenue(IllinoisRoute26)indowntownForreston,accordingtothe release.

Jonesalsowascitedfor no insuranceandspeeding,accordingtothe release.

Two die after New Year’s Day crash on Illinois2

ARockFallswomanwaskilledand aPolomandiedonMondayfollowing acrashonIllinoisRoute2justsouthof ByronearlyNewYear’sDay.

LaurieGriggs,48,ofRockFalls,was pronounceddeadatthescene,accordingtoanOgleCountySheriff’sOffice newsrelease.

TerrencePearse,62,ofPolo, was transportedbyByronambulanceto JavonBeaHospital-RiversideinRockfordforsevereinjuries.

PearsediedonJan.2, Winnebago DeputyCoronerMikeSmirzsaid.

“Itdoesappeartheweather played arole,”OgleCountySheriffBrian VanVicklesaid.

“Itwasveryslipperyandtherewas extremelylimitedvisibilityatthetime ofthecrash.”

Therewasdensefogandtheroads were“coveredinice”atthetimeofthe

two-vehiclecrash,accordingtothe release.

Pearsewasdrivinga2016Toyota PriusandGriggswasdrivinga2009 NissanAltimawhenthecarscollided,

Dramatic change in the weather was hard to believe

Itishardtobelievethatoneweek Ihuddledinmylivingroomto keepwarmwhilethewind roaredoutsideandthetemperature waszero.Aweeklateritis50degrees, thesnowisgone,anddaffodilsare comingupinsomeflowerbeds.

Isatmysnowmanoutonthefront porchforanaddedtouchtowinterand nowheseemsoutofplace.Iamalways amazedhowfasttheChristmasdecorationsdisappearoncethebigdayis over.Ijust cannotturnoffChristmas sofastbutmustletitlingerquite a while.

Ihaveevenbeenknowntochange myChristmastreeseveraltimesover theholidayseasonnowthatIamin town.InEagle Point,Ihad19treesin varioussizesandcoulduseallmy antiquedecorations.

WhenImovedintothisbigger house IwasinformedthattheChristmastreewasalwaysinthefrontwin-

dowbecausethatiswhereThelma alwayshadit.

Notwantingtobreakwithtradition,thebigtreewentinthefrontwindowuntilthisyear.Earlythissummer Idecidedtousemybasementsoall40 ofuscould spreadoutabit more.My firstmovewastohaveTedcomeand fixmybasement stepssoithadnice spindlesorslatsforthefourthreeyear olds.Thatwasagreatimprovement andthelittleonescouldraceupand downandbesafe.

Thenafterthebigrain,wescrubbed seventimesandstartedtodecoratefor Christmas.Thebigtreestayed down-

stairsandheldhandmade8-inch stuffedpaperornamentsthatarevery unique.

Therearelittlegirls,Santa’s,snowmenandmittensIhavenoideawho madethemorwhereIgotthem.Those werethedaysofLenny’sauctionbarn andIalwaysendedupwithabigboxof Christmasthings Ilovedallthetreasuresoftheholidays.

Afterweplacedthetree,Susanand Idrapedthetableswithcolorful Christmasclothsandpoinsettiasin thecenter.Wehadabigcolorfulrugin thecenterforthelittleonestoplayon andtheylovedthat.

All40peoplecouldbeinonebig roomforourMCAHNYgameandthe triviagamethatAllenObendorfput together.Therestofthetimetheentire housewasputtouseasfamilyvisited andate.

WealwaysorderpizzafromdowntownandKristahasherChristmas

cookiessowehaveplentytoeatand snackon.Itwasagreatdayforthe Obendorfclan.

SinceIhadthebigtreedownstairs, Igotasmallertreeforupstairsand it didnotgointhemiddleofthebigwindowbutinthecorner.Ididnotgetany phonecallstellingmethatThelma wouldbeupsetsoIassumethatpeople didnotevennotice.

Ididenjoyfrommywindowallthe decorations.Thelibrarylightsandthe towntreeplustheneighborhoodlights weresoverylovely.

Now Christmasisover andLinda andIareworkingonthelifeofJesse Schryverandwearefindingoutsome interestingthings thatI neverknew aboutthisindividual.

According torecordsobtainedby ShawMediainaFreedomofInformationActrequest,theDepartmentof Childrenand FamilyServiceshadvisitedtheSafranek/Burtonhousehold aboutadozentimesovertwoyears,followinguponfivereportsofsuspected abuseandneglect.

Eachtime,DCFSclosedthecase afterfindingnoindicationsofparental wrongdoing.

Nathanielwas4whentheallegationsfirstsurfaced.

AccordingtotheDCFStimeline:

•Whenthefirstreportwasmade, Sept.8,2018,Nathanielwaslivingwith hismother;hisfather,BryanBurton; andtwoolderhalf-sisters,thenboth youngerthan10.DCFSdidnotreveal whomadethecomplaints.

Thefirsttime,bothparentswere investigatedfor“substantialriskof physicalinjury/environmentinjurious tohealthandwelfarebyneglect;inadequatesupervision;cuts, bruises,weltsabrasions andoralinjuries;and substantialriskofphysicalinjury/environment injurioustohealthand welfare.”

DCFSinvestigators wereunabletomakecontactwiththefamilythat day,butcamebacktothe homethreedayslater andagainonOct.31, observed allthreechildren,andfound“nosigns ofabuseorneglectand thechildrenwere assessedassafeinthecareoftheir motherforbothvisits.”

OnFeb.25,investigatorstalkedwith Nathaniel,whohad“novisiblesignsof abuseorneglect.”

Allthreechildrenwereobserved againApril15,andthecasewasdeemed unfoundedandclosedthenextday.

•Threedayslater, April18,2019,another reportwasmadethat thethreechildrenwere beingvictimized,and Safranekwasinvestigatedforneglect.

DCFS tried but failed to make contactwiththefamilythatday.

•Twodayslater,Aug.7,another reportwasmade,thisonelistingall threechildren.Again,Safranekwas investigatedforneglect;aninvestigatorsawnosignsthatday,orfourdays later,onAug.11.Bythen,thegirlswere livingwiththeirbiologicalfather.

Allthreechildrenwerevisitedone moretime Sept.25intheirrespective homes.

Novisiblesignsofabuseorneglect wereobserved,andthecasewasclosed Oct.2,withathirdreferraltocommunity-basedservices.

Aninvestigatorvisitedthatdayandsaw nosignsofabuseor neglect.DCFS returnedJune12and talkedwithNathaniel, andJune17totalk with all three children. Thecasewasdeterminedtobeunfounded andclosedthatday.

Thefinalinvestigationwasmade Feb.17,2021,whentheagencyreceived thereportofNathaniel’sdeath.Itnotes thegirlswerewiththeirfatherandnot homewhenNathanieldied.Theywere interviewedtwodayslater.

Accordingtothesixthandfinal reportincludedonthetimeline,dated Feb.19,2021:

ThecasewasclosedNov.5,2018,and thefamilywas“referredforcommunity-basedservices.”

•OnFeb.15,2019,anotherreport wasmadetoDCFS,thisonenaming oneofthegirls,then7,asthevictim Bothparentsagainwereinvestigated forcuts,bruises,weltsabrasionsand oralinjuries.Bothgirlswereobserved

Again,the familywasreferredfor community-basedservices.

• On Aug. 5, a report was made allegingNathanielwasbeingvictimized Bothparents againwereinvestigated for neglect, as well as inadequate supervisionbyleavingtheboyalone“at home,outsideorinthecommunity” and “in the care of an inadequate caregiver.”

“Investigatorvisitedwiththetwo survivingsiblingsofNathaniel,observingandinterviewingthem.Thetwo childrenwereawarethatNathanielis deceased.

“Therewerenonotedvisiblesignsof abuseorneglect,butT.P[now11]did admitthatshehadwitnessedtheir mother[being]abusivetoNathanielin thepastwhenshelivedwithmom.

Learning grants awarded in memory of teacher and her son– Maggie and Amos

Arecord-breakingnumberofrequestswere receivedthisyearforTheMaggie &Amos Foundation’s“Fall”inLoveLearningGrants.

Atotalof$8,700wasawardedto22educatorsin eightschooldistricts.Themaximumgrantamount was$500.

Therewerearecordnumberofapplicants and numberofprojectsfunded,saidMeganDettman, oneofTheMaggie&AmosFoundation’smaincoordinators.

“Thatwasreallycool,andwewereabletogiveto alotofdifferentschools,”shesaid.

Thefoundationisa501(c)(3)establishedbyfriends andcoworkersofMargaret“Maggie”(Rosko)Meyer whodiedinahousefireOct.19,2016,inByron,along withher3-year-oldson,AmosMeyer.Maggiewasa schoolteacherattheChanaEducationCenteratthe timeofherdeath.

DuaneC.Meyer,Maggie’sex-husbandandAmos’ father,ischargedwiththeirmurdersandarson.His caseispendinginOgleCountycourt.

Thefoundation’swork andthegrantskeepMaggieandAmos’memoriesalive,Dettmansaid.

WhenpeoplefirsthearaboutTheMaggie&Amos Foundation,theyoftenthinkaboutthenegativityof theirdeathsandthesituationasawhole,Dettman said.

“Itisanegativesituation,butthenwecansay, ‘No,there’ssomuchgoodstuffthatgoeswithit,” shesaid.“WetrytoreallyembodywhatMaggie represented,andwithAmosaswell,becauseshe wasalwaystryingtomakelearningfunforhim, evenat3.”

Thisisthe sixth yearTheMaggie&AmosFoundationhasofferedthegrants.Fundingcomesfrom theInfinityRun,anannualfundraiserthefoundationhosts.

Diehl hands over reins after 18 years as village clerk

For18years,PaulaDiehlheldthe reinsofMt.MorrisVillageHalloperationsasvillage clerk.As2022closed out,sheletthemgo.

“Age,foronething,butIwasjust readytoseewhatthenextchapterof mylifehadtoholdforme,”Diehlsaid ofwhysheretired.“Ijustfeltthatit wastime.”

ShewashiredinDecember2004to replaceSandraBlakeasMt.Morris villageclerk.Diehl’sretirementwas effectiveDec.31,2022.

“It’sbeenagoodride,”shesaid.“I lovedithere. Ilovethe people.Ilovethecommunity.”

VillagePresident PhilLabashexpressed thanksto Diehlforher yearsoffaithfulservice.

“She’sawealthof information,”hesaid. “Shehasservedthe communitygreatlyover hertenure.She’llbe greatlymissed,notby notonlytheVillage Board[ofTrustees]and ourstaff,butbythecitizensofMt.Morris.”

extremely educational, she said. Diehl is great attaking in information, be it complaints or positive feedback, and respondingappropriately,Duffysaid.

“She has a love for the community. Hands down, nobody can deny that,” Duffy said of Diehl. “Just how proud she is of the community instills that in me and makes me want to follow suit.”

WhileDiehlsaidshe’ll miss working so closelywiththepeople who have become family, herretirement isn’t the end of her involvement with Mt.Morrisleadership.

On Dec. 13, 2022, Mt. Morris Board members hired Diehl as executive director of the Economic Development Corporation effective Jan. 1. The EDC is a 501(c)(3) formed in 2011 aimed at revitalizing the village’s business community.

Theposition issalariedandDiehlwillbe paid$12,000annually, Labashsaid.

“We’reexcitedto havehercontinuein thatcapacity,”hesaid. “Paula’sconnectionsto thecommunityand knowledgeofthebusinessenvironment inMt. Morrisisinvaluable.Shewillbring a lottothatposition.”

OtherthingsthatwillkeepDiehl busyincludeherworkontheSerenity Hospice&HomeFoundationBoard, theMt.MorrisLibraryFoundation Board,helpingOgleCountyestablish itsEconomicDevelopmentDepart-

ment,spendingtimewithfamilyand friendsandtraveling.

Having gone abroadatvarious timesthroughoutthe pastnineyears, Diehlsaidherbucketlistdestinations include Oregon,Washingtonstate, VermontandRhodeIsland.

“I’llstaybusy.There’snodoubt aboutit,”shesaid.

Diehlleft“somebigshoestofill,” Duffysaid,addingthatshehopesto liveuptoexpectationsandbelieves

shecanbeagoodcontributiontoMt. Morris.

“I’m veryexcited.I’manxious.I’m eager,”shesaid.

Whatisfrustratingisthatthere appearstobenoclear-cutsolution.

Many thingshavebeentried The IHSAhasactivelypromotedasportsmanshipcampaign,createdlicensing waivers and amped up recruiting. Pay rateshavebeenincreased.

It’shelpedalittle,buttherearestill notenoughyoungerofficialscoming intoreplaceanoldergroupthatis slowlytransitioningout.Weshouldbe thankfulthatthediehardscontinue workinglongpasttheirphysicalpeak.

Thetwosportswiththemostscrutinyforanofficialarefootballandbasketball.It’snosurprisethatthosetwo sportshavelostthemostofficials.

Fanshavealwaysgivenrefsthe business,buttoday’ssocietyisless civilizedthanbeforeandheapundue abuseonthesemenandwomen.

Irecallmyfatherrefereeingmanya basketball andbaseball game.When I wasateenager,hewantedmetojoin himasapartner.
