LR Summer Daze is set for June 1-3 Leaf River Summer Daze will usher in the summer this weekend. The annual festival begins Friday, June 1 and continues through Sunday, June 3, closing with the Grand Parade at 2 p.m. Raffle drawings will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Park. Friday night starts with the Vintage Tractor Show, Tractor Rodeo, and lunch stands with the Blue Grass band Grass Attack playing at 6:30 p.m. up to the fireworks at dusk, all on the field behind the River Valley Complex. The Leaf River Lions will serve hamburgers, brats, and all beef hot dogs beginning at Each year, Forreston’s local scouts build the field cross and present POW/MIA wreaths during the Memorial Day services at 5:30 p.m. Along with the grilled items Forreston Memorial Park. Photos by Zach Arbogast of soda. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for an evening of festive music. Grass Attack has played in many venues in the area and are well followed by their fans. The Leaf River Grange will present the Citizen of the Year Award on Friday at 8 p.m. Somewhere around 9:20 p.m. it will be dark enough for the fireworks show to begin. Start off Saturday morning at the River Valley Complex with breakfast served by the Leaf River Fire Department. Then enjoy the Lions Club Car Show, Antique Tractor and Engine Show, Cornbag Tournament and plenty of food for everyone.
Memorial Day Services
A variety of activities for the kids start at 10 a.m. with games, face painting, barrel wagon rides and a bounce house and slide. The kids’ activities are all free, sponsored by the Leaf River Lions Club, Bertolet Memorial Foundation, and the Leaf River United Methodist Church. This year the library board is sponsoring inflatables, located on the west side of the library. The annual FFA Alumni Truck and Track Pulls start at noon with the Badger State Pullers beginning at 7 p.m. Car show winners are announced at 2 p.m. The Leaf River United Methodist Church will serve Italian beef sandwiches at the Leaf River Summer Daze Festival on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Ogle County Pork Producers will serve pork chop sandwiches beginning around 4 p.m. The Leaf River Historical Museum will be open all weekend and will host a bake sale, craft show, homemade ice cream and a pig contest. Summer Daze wraps up on Sunday with the Leaf River Lions serving a pork chop dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building. A 16-year-old Rockford boy died Monday evening after being pulled from Lake Louise near Byron early in the afternoon. Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz said Tuesday that Luis Campos died from drowning around 9:10 p.m. at Mercyhealth, Rockford, where he was taken by ambulance after being rescued from the lake around 1 p.m. According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, the teenager disappeared under the water in area of the lake designated as “no swimming” as he was attempting to retrieve a beach ball that had floated away. Witnesses reported seeing him go under water and not resurface. Several people along with on duty life guards and first responders searched the area and pulled him from the water after approximately 10 minutes, the press release said. Lake Louise is a campground and recreation area north of Byron at 8840 N. Ill. 2. Illinois Conservation Police and the Byron Police Department assisted at the scene. “The incident remains under investigation, however, no type of foul play is suspected,” the press release said.
