4-H projects arrive at county fair By Earleen Hinton ehinton@oglecounty news.com Sarah Elliott could not help but smile as she walked into the Ogle County 4-H Exhibit Building on Saturday brandishing her wooden Viking shield. “I watch the History Channel’s Vikings and my ancestors were Vikings so I made this shield,” said the 18-year-old member of the Leaf River Soaring Eagles 4-H Club. “I like to dress up for Renaissance Faires so this will now be part of my costume.” Made from a table top purchased at Menards, the 15-pound shield included rune writing as a tribute to Elliott’s ancestors. Connecting interest with enterprise was a common theme on Saturday as 4-H kids brought their 4-H projects to the fairgrounds to be judged and then displayed at the fair, which opens this week. Taylor Yordy, age 13, took a dilapidated dresser and transformed it into a bench that she entered in the interior design category. Dubbed “My Dresser Makeover”, the project took just six weeks to complete. “We had this old dresser in my dad’s workshop. I didn’t think it would turn out as good as it did,” she told judge Tiffany West. “I grew really attached to it so I am going to keep it.” Ethan Bocker, another Leaf River Soaring Eagle, walked his rocket entry into the building with the help of his family. “He hasn’t shot it off yet, because we thought he might lose it,” said his dad Eric with a chuckle. An update on a proposed sewer main extension from Forreston to Baileyville Road was presented Monday night. Forreston Village President Mark Metzger said all property owners along the proposed project have been notified. “We are getting everything ready on our end,” said Metzger. “The annexation is in Rob’s (attorney Rob LeSage) hands.” The sewer extension will be for any property owners along the east side of Ill. 26 to Keith Ruter’s property at the corner of Baileyville Road. Ruter is building an addition to the building for his gun business and will need sewer when completed. There are also talks about Dollar General possibly building a store on Baileyville Road which will

need the sewer line extended under the road across from Ruter’s property. The cost of the project is estimated to by $200,000 with $22,000 paid by Dollar General. “Why are we doing all the expense?” said trustee Gary Buss. “Why are we doing it?” said trustee Marc Stamm. Metzger said the project will bring water and sewer to Baileyville Road. He said Ruter has invested in the community and a sewer line to his property, which is in the village, is an expense the village needs to make. Metzger said he can ask village engineer Mick Gronewold to attend a meeting to explain the costs of the proposed project. Buss asked if the project could be done in phases. “Phase one to Dr. Ruter,” said Buss. “I don’t want to start and stop because we are Turn to A2
