colored Prairie Blazing Star will cover the landscape with their slender stalked flower heads. One of the stars of the show and one prairie flower frequently painted by artists is the deep blue Fringed Gentian, sometimes found in wetter sites. Insects of every size and color are invited to the show of these vibrant prairie flowers to harvest the pollen. And one of the best actresses around — the Monarch Butterfly — who will lay her egg on the leaves of plants in the milkweed family, of which a prairie often has many varieties. Yes, just like the theater, every trip to a prairie will bring something new and beautiful to see. The Illinois Valley has a vast array of places to see this fall show. From Starved Rock in Utica to the I&M and Hennepin canals to the Red Covered Bridge outside of Princeton, you’ll want to get your ticket punched to all the beauty in the area. Want to take a drive and see some fall prairies/colors on a lazy day trip?
