The Erie School District’s annual Veterans Day program to honor those who served returned in 2021 after its cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students, veterans, families, staff and community members gathered in the annex gym to celebrate veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 10, with artwork, songs, speakers, recognition and gratitude and gifts for local veterans.

Erie American Legion 582 opened the ceremony with a Presentation of the Colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and opening remarks by Superintendent Chuck Milem.

Kindergartners through fourth graders, fifth and sixth grade choir and seventh through 12th grade choir and band – led by musical directors Kate Leihsing and Sandy Newton – each performed patriotic songs that stirred the audience, with renditions of “Star-Spangled Banner,” “If You’re Grateful and You Know It,” “God Bless the USA,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “How Do You Tell a Veteran Thank You,” “American Tears” and “I Still Believe.”

Presentations included “History of Veterans Day” by Reese Duncan, “Recognizing Vets Today” by Max Temple, “War Memorials” by Elley Weidel and Isaac Carlson, “Soldier’s Journal” by Sawyer Copeland, “Women During WWII” by Hannah Neumiller, “MASH and Surgical Units” by Bryce Jepson, “442nd Regimental Combat Team (Japanese-American Unit)” by Mr. Orman, “Navajo Code Talkers” by Joe Papineau, “Tuskegee Airmen” by Izzy Gabriel, “Ways to Help Support Veterans” by Ellie Johnson and Justin Jacobs, and Lexi Kapple leading the recognition of Erie High School graduates from the past five years currently serving.

The final portion of the program was an “Announcement of Branches” by Kennady Gehrking, with veterans of each branch standing up and elementary students bringing them a gift. TAPS was then played by Gunnar Wuebben and Ethan Lavine.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the normal coffee hour was canceled and all attendees had to wear masks, but the overall spirit of the program was as patriotic as ever.

Jim and Anne Johnson’s 70th anniversary

The home of Loren and Connie Tenboer will be featured on the MCH Foundation’s “Holiday Tour of Homes” on Dec. 2-4.

The third home featured is the home of Loren and Connie Tenboer. Located on Hillside Road between Prairie Center and Garden Plain roads, this nearly 100-year-old farmhouse has been lovingly preserved and added on to over the years. Built in 1923, this farm was owned and occupied by the Shirk family before being sold to the Elston Knox family. In 1969, Loren’s parents, Whitey and Ruth Tenboer, purchased the farm and moved into the farmhouse. Whitey

Jim and Anne (Cox) were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rapids City on Thursday, Nov. 24, 1951.

They farmed for many years. Jim retired

and Ruth moved to town in 1988, and Loren and Connie moved into the family farm. Over the years, additions have been added, including a large great room in 2003 with vaulted ceilings and a huge window facing sunsets. A beautiful, modern kitchen was installed in 2008.

The home will showcase collections of family members’ Christmas decorations and ornaments held dear over the years, including a teddy bear, the very first Christmas gift Connie’s mother

from John Deere in 1994 after 30 years.

Anne worked at General Electric and volunteered at King’s Kloset. They are members of the Erie United Methodist Church.

They are the parents of Ruth (Jim) Melton, Roger (Kris) Johnson, Diane

Those in attendance will revel in the decorated large great room with beautiful fireplace and a 12-foot Christmas tree, the kitchen, large dining room, sitting area and enclosed porch. This home will be worth the short 10-minute drive outside of Morrison. Loren will be showcasing his John Deere memorabilia, including a tractor, grain cart and antique gas pump.

The homes of Dale Belt and Lori Neighbour, Jean Decker and Rich and Lynelle Criss also will be on the tour.

The MCH Foundation’s Holiday Tour of Homes, “The Halls Be Decked!”, introduces the third of four homes that will be decorated and open on Dec. 2-4.

Thursday night tickets allow you to stroll through homes without the crowds, then go to the Morrison Hospital Conference room (Kaffee Haus) and enjoy festive meat and cheese trays, plus delectable desserts such as chocolate dipped strawberries and others. In addition, Thursday night guests will get a commemorative Christmas ornament. Thursday hours are 4 to 8 p.m.

The Kaffee Haus will be open until 9 p.m. Tickets for the exclusive event are a tax-deductible donation of $100 to the MCH Foundation.

Candidates stacking up to fill U.S. Rep. Bustos’ seat

rrodgers@shawmedia.com Two more people who are looking to land the 17th Congressional District seat long held by U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos announced their candidacy Nov. 10.

Bustos, D-East Moline, announced in April that she would be retiring at the end of her term, which will mark a decade in office.

So far, six candid a t e s h a v e annou nce d the ir U.S. Rep. Cheri plans to run for the Bustos, D-East congressional seat. Moline The latest are former state Rep. Litesa Wallace, who served four years in Rockford’s 67th District, and former meteorologist Eric Sorensen, who

worked at news stations in Rockford and the Quad Cities. Both are Democrats.

“Too many legislators across the country are trying to roll back our m o s t e s s e n t i a l Litesa Wallace human rights.

When I’m in Congress, I will fight to protect reproductive freedom, our voting rights and our right to affordable health care,” Wallace said in a two -mi nut e video announcing her campaign. “I got things done in Springfield, and I will get things done in Washington.”

Wallace is a child care advocate who ran for lieutenant governor alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate Daniel Biss in 2017.

“As a single mom, social worker and

former state representative, I know the challenge of finding affordable child care and the impacts of the rising cost of food and rent,” she said in the video. “It’s why as a state legislator, Eric Sorensen I strengthened the Illinois child care assistance program and fought for a living wage. Today, I’m launching my run for Congress to continue the fight for working families.”

Sorensen is a climate advocate and said issues such as climate change shouldn’t be political.

“As big weather events impacted your family, I was your weather guy.

We built a connection. I earned your trust. And I’m not done yet,” Sorensen said in his campaign announcement on

Facebook. “I’m excited to share with you, my friends, that I’m announcing my candidacy for the Democratic nomination in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. I’m ready to use my scientific background to solve problems for Illinois families.”

Wallace and Sorenson will compete against Rockford Alderman Jonathan Logemann and Rock Island County Board member Angie Normoyle for the Democratic nomination. On the Republican side, Esther Joy King and Charlie Helmick have announced they are running.

The 2022 primary date was moved to June 28 after Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill in June that addressed a number of election changes. In previous election cycles, the primary had been in March.

Bustos, 60, won a close race against King in November 2020 for her fifth term. Voters will choose her replacement at the polls on Nov. 8, 2022.

The Morrison Fire Department will be having its annual drive-thru pork chop lunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20.

In addition to grilled pork chop sandwiches, the fire department will be offering brats, hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink.

Proceeds will be used to benefit the fire department’s needs for equipment, training, etc.

Those attending will enter the fire station from Main Street and drive

through the station to receive their meals before exiting onto Route 30.

Those attending also can bring new toys to donate to the firemen’s annual Toy Drive. The Toy Drive provides presents, delivered by Santa on a fire truck, to those in need of Christmas gifts this year.

Written warnings were issued for speeding in the 400 block of 19th Avenue, no valid registration at 10th Avenue and Route 84 and speeding at Route 84 and 31st Avenue.

Melissa A. Dechene of Fulton was cited for a property damage accident in the alley south of 1200 14th Avenue and operating an uninsured vehicle. She was released with a notice to appear.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Capt. Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for October.

Illinois State Police District 1 troopers issued 321 citations and 505 written warnings and made 14 criminal arrests during the month of October. Speeding accounted for 179 citations, 19 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations and 10 citations were issued for distracted driving violations. There were 29 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated 25 traffic crashes, assisted 95 motorists and conducted 122 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 19 of which were placed out

Mary said she saw the story of 9-year-old Zoey Stuart and her family, who donated $500 to the Morrison Bark Park on Facebook. The story shares that the family pools their money together every year for good charities and programs, forgoing Christmas gifts. This inspired Mary to match Zoey’s donation. On the Move with Parks and Recreation is grateful for the

donations to help build the Morrison Bark Park.

Moline is a retired professor of geography at Augustana College in Rock Island. After receiving his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Chicago, he taught human geography

and environment courses for 45 years.

He specializes in the historical geography of the U.S. and geography of East Asia, particularly China.

He was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Fighting Illini. In the past Jerry served as the President for U.R.I.C.R.A, the youth rec league sports program in Port Byron.

He loved his family and cherished the time they spent together. The world will be a less funny place without Jerry.

Jerry is survived by his wife Judy; children, Robin (John) Chenoweth of Lake Worth, FL, Chad Tanner of Hillsdale; brothers, Donald (Elaine) Tanner, Paul (Ronda) Tanner, and Terry (Lisa) Tanner; step sisters Sandi Henyan and Linda (Skip) Dillin; grandchildren, Morgan (Pat) Cullen, Brittany (Mike) Johnston, Nolan Braddock, and Kristin (Christian) Friedemann; great grandchildren Blake and Tyler Cullen, Fisher and Briella Johnston. Raising Hope, a new Foster Care Closet in Erie, is seeking support for area foster families and foster children by collecting items for new placement first-overnight bags.

Donations of clothing, toiletries, diapers, comfort items, toys and other resources are being gathered for distribution to local families in stages of fostering, reunification or the adoption process.

Rapids City sees delay with water loop boring

Rapids City trustees discussed the contractor’s difficulties with boring under Illinois Route 84 and the railroad tracks at their meeting on Nov. 9.

McClintock Excavating started the boring process for the water loop project last month but was unable to complete it with an auger bore. A different type of bore, described by trustee Greg Rankin as a “jack hammer type,” will be used to complete the work this

month.

The village budgeted $540,000 for the project but costs will increase due to the boring issues. The board approved a payment of $78,919.35 and a change order request of $22,440 with the contractor.

Village President Harold Mire Jr. said he’ll be meeting with engineering firm MSA Professional Services and the contractors to discuss the increased costs, which could put the project nearly $50,000 over budget. The water loop is expected to provide better ser-

vice to households to the west of the railroad tracks, since only one water main currently provides service to those households. The village has been planning for the project for a few years.

Trustees also approved amending the engineering contract for the 13th St. culvert project for $6,000 to include a new sewer connection. That project is still in the design phase, with bidding expected to open in early 2022.

The board will have a Committee of the Whole meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, to consider various firms

vying for 17th St. engineering work.

That project has an $800,000 budget for restabilizing the hillside, with trustees expected to vote on a firm at the Dec. 14 meeting.

In other reports, the board learned that the census count for the village increased by five residents in 2020.

Trustees will be prepping for budget meetings in the next couple of months.

They also heard a presentation on insurance rates for village employees, with a vote planned for next month’s meeting.

Vandals continued their assault on public property in Fulton the past week, breaking about 10 window panes and a light fixture at Fulton Grade School over the weekend.

Police Chief Howard Reedy renewed his warning saying anyone caught damaging public property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Reedy said anyone found in schoolyards after dark will be arrested and charged with trespassing.

RiverChor Fall Concert set for Nov. 21

After taking time away during the COVID-19 pandemic, the community choir with members from throughout the Gateway area resumed rehearsals this fall and are making final preparations before presenting their concert on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Although construction of the $140 million Thomson Correctional Facility is nearly complete, it is still not known when the prison will house its first inmates. This is due to the fact that legislators never approved the $12.8 million in spending needed to hire workers and to open the prison.

NEWS BRIEFS King’s Kloset, Erie Schools partner for blessing bags

King’s Kloset in Erie is partnering with the Erie School District to offer food and snacks for children in need over the weekends and extended breaks.

The free bags will be distributed by school counselors on the last day of school before the weekend or break.

Children in need in grades K-12 at Erie schools will receive these weekly bags of food. Parents who would like to sign up their children can email the school counselor by Nov. 19.

EP’s Jaden Johnson signs to play softball at Winona State University

Erie-Prophetstown’s Jaden Johnson signed Nov. 9 to play softball at Winona State University at a signing ceremony at Erie High School attended by family, friends and coaches.

Johnson is the daughter of Jeremy and Jessica Johnson of Erie.

“Jaden came up as a freshman and has been a core player

for the last three years, being a solid player for the Panthers,” coach Kerrie McDonnell said. “I am extremely excited for her to continue her softball career past high school.”

Johnson, a travel softball player, has been coached for hitting by former EP baseball player Trey Hannam.

Hannam and McDonnell both were in attendance at the signing ceremony.

“I chose to sign with the

Winona State Warriors as I really like the team and the support from the coaches. It is a good atmosphere for me to do well academically and athletically,” Johnson said.

Winona State is about 4 1/2 hours from Erie.

While Johnson received other offers, she felt Winona State was a good fit for herself and her family to visit and attend home games. Johnson intends to major in biology.

Lena-Winslow tops Fulton in 1A quarterfinal 54-28

ccutter@saukvalley.com LENA – Representation for a conference that has won all but two Class 1A championships since 2010, and all but six in the last 20 years, came down to the final pair of NUIC teams that remained Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round.

The last NUIC team left standing in hopes to compete for the 1A title will be a familiar one, as defending champion Lena-Winslow scored early and often to defeat Fulton 54-28 at the Panther Bowl.

Fulton, in its first season in the small-school football power league, finishes 9-3 and a game short of its first semifinal appearance since 2000.

Unlike its earlier game with the Panthers, a 54-7 homecoming blowout on Sept. 24, the Steamers scored more often this time around, but it was too little, too late after being buried in an 18-0 hole.

“We were ready for them, but they’re a very difficult team to stop,” Steamers coach Patrick Lower said.

“You can’t say enough good things about Lena-Winslow, they’re a heck of a football team, and we got beat by a better football team today. We did some good things out there, but just didn’t do enough.”

Much of the Panthers’ early dominance came from senior running back Marey Roby, whose first two touches of the ball resulted in scoring plays of 71 and 38 yards. Those plays were the Panthers’ first and fourth plays of the game from scrimmage, and Roby finished with 254 yards on 22 plays.

Jake Zeal scored from 1 yard out with 7.3 seconds left in the first quarter to extend the Panthers’ lead to 18-0.

“This is what happens when we control the line of scrimmage,” said Roby, who had 202 yards by halftime.

“It all starts with the big boys up front.

We identified where they played strong, and when they shifted to our strong side, we just put a hat on a hat, and I can make one big cut when they do that.”

Fulton hit paydirt for the first time after senior quarterback Patrick Lower scored on a 1-yard keeper with 5:18 left in the first half, but the Panthers’ Gage Dunker countered that score with a 6-yard run on his first touch of the ball for a 24-7 lead. The Steamers stopped the Panthers on their first four two-point conversions, which, if all successful, would have made it a four-touchdown game instead of three.

Brock Mason returned it 77 yards for a score to close the gap to 24-14 with 4:25 left in the first half.

“We fought, and I couldn’t be more proud of my teammates,” Mason said.

“Everybody fought, but it just didn’t turn out in our favor. [Lena-Winslow] is a heck of a football team, they just outplayed us.”

Roby scored for the third time with 1:39 to go in the half, and Fulton almost countered that on the next drive. The Steamers, whose running game had been bottled up to that point, got to the 5-yard line on successive passes. However, what would have been a touchdown by Jacob Jones on the next play was negated by a rarely-called aiding-the-runner penalty. With one more try at it as the first half clock wound down, Roby intercepted a Lower pass in the end zone to hold off the Steamers.

“Marey Roby is one of the best, if not the best, running backs I’ve ever seen or played against,” Mason said.

“Everybody on that team is solid. They don’t have a weak link.”

midway through the third quarter for a 48-14 advantage. Dunker led the Panther defense with 3.5 tackles for loss.

Fulton’s remaining two touchdowns came through the air. Lower passed to Baylen Damhoff for a 15-yard touchdown with 1:54 to play in the third, and passed to Mason from 5 yards out with 2:38 to play in the game.

“We wanted to come out and punch them early,” the younger Lower said.

“Last game we came out a little flat, and this time, unfortunately, we got down 18-0 and just kept playing from behind all day. I’m proud of our offense and the way we moved the ball, but we were behind the 8-ball, and it’s tough to battle back from that far down.”

Lena-Winslow’s last score came on an Ayden Packard 3-yard run with 5:04 remaining in the game.

The Panthers will make their eighth semifinal appearance in the last 13 seasons, and are one step closer to playing for their fifth state championship. The Panthers will take on the Colfax Ridgeview-Lexington co-op Saturday afternoon back at the Panther Bowl.

“One game at a time,” Roby said.

“We’ve just got to control the line of scrimmage and not get too ahead of ourselves. We don’t want to overlook

any opponents, and in 2018 [against Forreston], it definitely happened. We won’t overlook anyone, and we’ll play out hearts out. This is what can happen when we play our tails off.”

Since the first loss to the Panthers, Fulton hadn’t allowed more than two touchdowns in a game in the 6 weeks leading up to Saturday. The Steamers end a season that’s been with heavy hearts in the last two weeks: Jones’ father, Larry, 51, died on Nov. 4, two days before the Steamers’ second-round playoff win at Ottawa Marquette. Larry was a coach and statistician with the football program and several other sports in Fulton, and Steamers players and coaches wore attire with the initials “LJ” in his honor.

Jones finished with 102 receiving yards on eight catches as the younger Lower’s top target. Lower threw for 259 yards on 23-of-34 passing, with three interceptions.

“Our 10 seniors have given us everything, especially with everything we’ve been through these last two weeks,” coach Lower said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. I love each and every one of them, and they’re going to be good, successful young men in the real world.”

How has B.L.I.N.D. impacted your life?

I’ve met a lot of new people because of B.L.I.N.D. and learned how to manage my emotions a lot better and how to communicate with people that care about me and how I’m feeling.

How has B.L.I.N.D. impacted your life?

B.L.I.N.D. has impacted my life by showing me that it’s OK to reach outside of your comfort zone and meet new people. When I joined B.L.I.N.D., I was nervous that I wouldn’t fit in with the other leaders or the freshmen wouldn’t like me, but you really just have to be yourself and not worry about what others think because you want to be able to show the freshmen that it’s OK for them to be themselves.

What advice would you give to freshmen that would encourage them to pursue becoming a B.L.I.N.D. leader?

If a freshman asked me if they should become a leader, I would tell them that they absolutely should become a B.L.I.N.D. leader. I would tell them that they would be able to make new friends and they could also impact someone’s life by being their B.L.I.N.D. leader.

If you were given $1,000, what would you do with it?

If I was given $1,000, I would probably give it to some of my family members to help them out a little bit.

Emmanuel Reformed Church to host free community meal

The Wednesday night free community meals will conclude this week before returning Jan. 12. Both dine-in buffet and drive-thru meals are being offered from 5:30 to 6 p.m. The menu for Nov. 17 will be spaghetti, green beans, bread stick and Oreo-filled chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. If eating in, milk and water also are served. Drive-thru participants are asked to line up in the parking lot from the alley heading south. All are cordially welcome.

DELTA Club for children in kindergarten through fifth grade is Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., as well as Jr. High Youth Group. This will be the week for the Fall Harvest Party for DELTA. Join us at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, and feel free to come a little early and grab a cup of coffee in the Welcome Center before going into the sanctuary for the worship service. All are welcome and reminded that Emmanuel Church is a “come as you are” family and dress clothes certainly are not necessary. Pastor Luke Schouten continues his message series, “Give Thanks,” with “Psalm 118.” Ministry Coordinator Rich Criss will lead the worship set and will serve as organist for the service. The Sanctuary Choir will sing “How Great Thou Art.” The congregation will celebrate the baptism for the Buis children. Sunday school for children in preschool through high school follows worship until 11 a.m. Coffee and fellowship for adults also follows worship in the Christ Center. All are welcome and invite your friends.

HILLSDALE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT ANNUAL BUDGET AND APPROPRIATION ORDINANCE FOR 2021-2022 WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Hillsdale Fire Protection District, County of Rock Island, State of Illinois, has prepared or caused to be prepared in tentative form, an Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance for the fiscal year 2021-2022, and the Sec. of the Board has made the same conveniently available to public inspection for at least 30 days prior to the final action thereon, and WHEREAS, a public hearing was held as to such Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance on the 4th day of November, at 6:00 PM, notice of which hearing was given at least thirty (30) days prior thereto by publication in The Review, a newspaper of general circulation published within said District, and all other legal requirements have been complied with: NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Hillsdale Fire Protection District, County of Rock Island, State of Illinois, as follows: SECTION ONE: That the fiscal year of this Fire Protection District is hereby fixed and declared to be from May 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022.
