MORRISON –A mountainlioncap turedontrail cameras andspotted by severalwitnessesisinwestern Whiteside CountynearMorrison,SheriffJohn Bookersaidin a newsreleaseThursday night.
“Weare nowawareofmultiple sightings ofanapparentmountainlioninthe ruralareassurroundin g Morrison,” Bookersaid.

Mountain lionsrarelyattackhumans, andthisone doesnotappeartopose a significant risktopeople,Booker said.
“He l ooksprettyscaryonthetrail
cam, but we have received absolutely no reports of any threatening encounters with humans,” Booker said.
Mountain lions, or cougars, are protected species,so don’tshootit unless there is an “imminent threat”to a person or property such as livestock or pets.
Anyone who sees themountain lion and is concernedfor their safety should call the sheriff’s office at 815-772-4044or 911. Sightings should be reported to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at https://www.wildlifeillinois.org/ sightings/report.
It’s not the first time a mountain lion has visited theMorrison area, home of RockwoodStatePark.
On Nov. 20, 2013 (two yearsbeforethe law protecting the endangered big cats
was passed), IDNR conservationofficer Ron Palumbo shot a cougar thatwas cornered in a con c ret e t unne l beneat h a corn crib.
In t hat ca se, t hebig mal e pose d a threat to locals andtheir livestock, as well as to horses on the property it was headedtowardwhen it was spotted.
It was preserved and nowis on display at the Andersen Nature Center in Fulton.
The IDNR has some advice for those who encounter a mountain lion:
Don’t surpriseit. Make enoughnoise to make sure ithearsyou.
Don’t run. A cougar isn’t likely to attack a personunless it feels trapped or provoked, or if a person appears to be prey.
If you are ina group, gather together
and move asa group
Don’t approach it
If the cougar sees you, stand your ground . Lookaslargeaspossible by standingupstraightand putting your arms upintheairand slowlybacking away.Ifpossible, get inside a building or vehicle.
If a cougar does attack you, try to fight it off.Throwrocks,usesticks.
Don’t playdead
