Acommunity’s educaonal system is the bedrock of family life. In Elmhurst, a unique mix of public, private and parochial schools, plus specialty educaon centers, provide learning opportunies spanning from preschool through college. Forthe past 30 years the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry and its members have treated new teachers to Elmhurst at a welcoming luncheon in August.
¢ WHAT COLLEGE OUGHT TO BE Celebrang its Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) in the 2021-22 school year, Elmhurst University blends liberal learning and professional preparaon to educate students for life in a global society. Elmhurst accomplishes its mission by providing a range of high-quality academic offerings—70 majors and 15 pre-professional programs of study in 25 undergraduate departments, and 20 master’s degree programs in four fields and eight graduate cerficate programs, plus 44 places to study abroad—to nearly 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is recognized for the excellence of its programs and faculty. A faculty member, not a teaching assistant, teaches every class, and more than 80% of the 160 full-me faculty hold the highest degree in their academic field. The average class has 17 students with a student to faculty rao of 14-to-1. Elmhurst consistently ranks as one of the Midwest’s best values in higher educaon, according to U.S. News & World Report, and Money and Forbes magazines.
¢ EDUCATING THE PUBLIC Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 was formed in 1974 to provide a unified school program for students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The District’s 14 schools—eight elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), York Community High School (9-12), early childhood center/preschool and transion program—currently services more than 8,000 students who reside primarily in Elmhurst (93%), plus small porons of Oak Brook, Bensenville and Addison. District 205 faculty and staff are among the finest and best qualified in the State of Illinois, with 73.6% holding a Master’s degree or higher. District 205 students consistently perform well above state averages on all standardized tests; the ACT average composite score is 24.3 (2016). More than 80% of York’s students parcipate in at least one extracurricular acvity.
