EMERGENCY SERVICES
Public safety is a major municipal service, with the job of protecng life and property in Elmhurst resng in the professional hands of the Police and Fire departments. The city’s 18-under curfew is 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday. Elmhurst hired its first Constable on Patrol (or COP) in 1882, changed the tle to Marshal in 1892 and named its first Chief of Police in 1925. A volunteer Fire Department was established in 1893, the first Fire Staon was built on Schiller Street in 1884 and 1924 brought the first paid fireman. Since 1941, the city has operated at least two Fire Staons.
¢ 24-HOUR PROTECTION Elmhurst residents enjoy their community thanks to its low crime rate thanks to the efforts of full-me and part-me sworn officers, K-9 unit, community service officers and civilian support staff are focused on problem solving with strong input from residents. Officers patrol around the clock in marked and unmarked cars, and on foot. Operaonal since 1992, the C.O.P.P. unit (five officers, one supervisor) works with residents on a proacve partnership to prevent crime and resolve community problems. Programs range from a Peer Jury for non-violent, first-me juvenile offenders to SALT, which brings senior and lawmen together.
¢ TAKING THE HEAT OFF Elmhurst is among select group of Illinois communies and municipalies naonwide with an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class I protecon rang, thanks to its 11 paid officers, 33 firefighters and 12 contracted paramedics. At least 11 firefighters and four paramedics on duty daily, providing Advanced Life Support services and manning firefighng equipment. They are also trained to respond to to medical, hazardous materials, technical above and below grade rescues, and vehicle extricaon. Fire prevenon is emphasized through building inspecons, construcon reviews, public educaon programs, and the sale of smoke detectors and fire exnguishers.

Elmhurst residents are served by two township governments, York and Addison, which provide services mandated by the state and approved by their board of trustees. Extensive senior services include transportaon and senior centers. An effort is made by both township boards to provide compable services, including youth commissions, food pantries and assistance to indigent families Basic provinces encompass general assistance, tax assessing, roads and other such services not provided by either municipalies or counes. Some programs are only performed in unincorporated areas, while others are available to all township residents.

¢ HEALTHY DRIVEN The 2013 merger of Elmhurst-based Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and Naperville-based Edwards Hospital and Health Services laid the groundwork for the “Healthy Driven” instuon now known as EdwardElmhurst Health. The merger created one of the larger integrated health systems in Illinois comprised of three hospitals (Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks at Edward) and more than 50 outpaent locaons across a service area of 1.7 million residents. The system employs nearly 7,400 and has more than 1,900 physicians on staff. Founded in 1926 as the first hospital in DuPage County, Elmhurst Hospital was rebuilt in 2011 as the center of a 50-acre, three-building campus integrated healthcare development in south Elmhurst, adjacent to the Elmhurst Center for Health. A stateof-the-art acute care hospital with 259 private paent rooms, Elmhurst Hospital features a naonallyrecognized heart failure program, state-of-the-art Cancer Center, high-tech Emergency Services Department, technologicallyadvanced surgical suites, Level IIe Special Care Nursery offering private rooms and paent-centered care with Planetree Disncon. The Center for Health offers a unique setting for physician pracces, outpaent healthcare services and outpaent surgery. Established in 1952 as one of the first mul-specialty medical groups in DuPage County, the Elmhurst Clinic is a group of 100 physicians and nurse praconers represenng 20 speciales. Five of the Clinic’s 11 locaons are in Elmhurst.
