The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – A 101-year-old D-Day veteran has become the oldest person in the world to skydive.

Bryson William Verdun Hayes completed a tandem skydive from 15,000 feet with members of his extended family on Sunday at an airfield in Honiton, southwestern England.

Among those jumping were Hayes’ son, grandson, great-grandson and great-granddaughter.

At the age of 101 years, 38 days, Hayes broke the Guinness World Record held by Canada’s Armand Gendreau, who jumped in 2013 at 101 years, three days.

When he landed, Hayes said he was “absolutely over the moon” at the achievement.

The jump raised money for the Royal British Legion, a veterans’ organization.

Former mobile home community will reopen as forest preserve

SYCAMORE – The site of a former mobile home park east of Sycamore, where residents were plagued by floods, is set to reopen as a forest preserve as early as this summer.

DeKalb County bought Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park at 955 E. State St. and relocated about 400 residents in summer 2014. The 60-acre Sycamore Forest Preserve, which is in a floodplain just outside the city limits, was home to 123 trailers.

The county is using $7.1 million in state and federal emergency management grants for the project, which includes restoring open space in the area.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson said the DeKalb Coun-

ty Forest Preserve District has been working to restore the area, and it is hoping for a summer opening.

The county must wait, however, to transfer the land to the forest preserve district until the state officially closes on the grant funding, Hanson said.

He also said the preserve will connect with the expansion of the Great Western Trail that the city of Sycamore has planned.

“It will be a really nice setup once all the pieces are in place,” Hanson said.

The grounds and parking lot are closed to the public, but residents can be seen riding bikes or pushing strollers from trails leading through the back of the property.

Groundskeeper Jeff Perry said paving and landscaping still need to be done, but it probably will not take

long if the weather permits. Three shelters already have been installed.

Perry said the new forest preserve is in an ideal location that locals can easily find.

“I’m glad it’s in town yet out of town,” he said. “This is a forest preserve for the citizens. They don’t have to go out to Hampton.”

Perry said that once the preserve is ready to be opened, the final features will be added, such as picnic tables, rocks and gates.

“I’m glad to be a part of it,” he said.

DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. said during the annual State of the Counties luncheon Friday that the new forest preserve would be a “tremendous asset for the county.”

“It will have a fishing pond, it will have different shelters in it, and

it will – once it forms and once we open it – quickly become the most visited forest preserve, I predict, because it’s right off of downtown Sycamore,” Pietrowski said.

Pietrowski said the area was not safe for the mobile homes because of the consistent flooding.

“We would have to have emergency personnel with boats and get people out, but you’ve got the electricity lines and everything, so we’re very thankful that no one was ever seriously injured or hurt at that facility, and glad that we were able to transform it to open space,” he said.

The new forest preserve will add to 19 existing forest preserves in DeKalb County that cover more than 1,400 acres, include 50 miles of trails and attract more than 100,000 visitors annually, Pietrowski said.

Wayne Roger Aeikens, age 72, passed away May 12, 2017.

He was born October 15, 1944, in Montevideo, Minnesota, one of fourteen children to Benjamin and Jesse (Christians) Aeikens. Wayne grew up in Montevideo, Minnesota. He married Jeannine Kaye Willander, in February 1964, who preceded him in death in 2007. While always calling “Monte” home, Wayne transferred his allegiance to Illinois and led the way for several of his siblings to make their transfer. During those early years while living in Burlington he coached The Burlington Teener League. He would reminisce with great pride about the “boys” and winning the district trophy.

In 1974 Wayne and Jeannine purchased a house and moved to Sycamore, raised three children and he became a dedicated Cubs and Bears fan.

“Hurricane Wayne” as they called him, worked for Ideal Industries as a machinist for 45 years. He enjoyed watching sports on TV (particularly the Chicago Cubs and Bears) but in a pinch any baseball, football or basketball game would do. Hunting and fishing were seasons he lived for and during one of his many hunts he and his fellow duck hunter would help save the life of another duck hunter and his dog from drowning in the Mississippi.

One of Wayne’s greatest sources of pride was his family though, rarely missing a family gathering regardless of his condition or its location. When he felt, it had been too long between celebrations he would request arrangements for a reunion or get together. It was his way of showing how important all of his siblings and their children were to him. He was a sharp card player and on many Friday or Saturday evenings would play “Buck” and recounted his wins during the following week. He was also one of the luckiest people around with an occasional visit to the casino.

His favorite meatloaf recipe, which he enjoyed making for Sunday lunch for many years, had an a-bun-dance of onions. He loved onions and could bite into one and eat it like an apple. A few of his other favorites included homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, rhubarb crunch, and coffee – served piping hot and “as black as the Ace of Spades” as he would say.

He despised pineapple, rice, Facebook and most of all the sound of his vehicle blinker.

In 2002 by the grace of God and the hands of Dr. Marshall Goldin he was granted a second chance at life after bypass surgery at Rush University Hospital. Many medical issues would ensue but he was a “tough” man as we were told on his last day, and never gave up fighting. On July 28, 2009, he married Karen Papenberg and she would be his rock, advocate and angel being by his side, caring for him every minute.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Karen of 7 years; his three children, Lynnette (Jeff) Solomon, Ron (Jan Wig) and Diane (Victor Tyree); two stepchildren, Roberta (Brian) Dively, Sue (John) Brusky; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. All of whom will miss him deeply.

Chavez was placed on electronic home monitoring.

Both vehicles were found in the north ditch of Lincoln Highway, court records show, and Adluru’s passenger, Charishma Dudde, 23, of DeKalb, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital then flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital.

She was in stable condition before undergoing surgery Sunday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

A public relations spokesperson could not give details on Dudde’s condition Monday evening.

Chavez’s passenger, Orlando Hernandez, 26, of the 3500 block of South 52nd Court, Cicero, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital and ended up with a fractured rib, court records show.

“My concern is that’s there’s no avenue or indication of how he would be coming to court. Family members were unsure how he would get here for future court dates. Taking all that into consideration, he’ll be released on a $20,000 recognizance bond.”

Chavez will be back in court for a status hearing at 9 a.m. June 9 and will have a preliminary hearing July 7.

Adluru came to NIU in spring 2016 and was a student in the master’s program in electrical engineering, according to the NIU Indian Student Association’s Facebook page. He also was a member of the association’s cricket team and was set to graduate in December.

Police say he choked, threatened girlfriend

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In one of the most successful local drives on record, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive collected about 28,000 pounds of goods for DeKalb, Sycamore and Northern Illinois University pantries.

Unofficial numbers show that the DeKalb Salvation Army received about 18,000 pounds of food, the Sycamore Food Pantry about 7,000 pounds and the Huskie Food Pantry – a new partner to the drive – about 3,000 pounds.

Clare Kron, co-chairwoman of the drive, attributed the success to increased publicity and the widespread distribution of thousands of Stamp Out Hunger-printed shopping bags, a first for the event.

“We knew distributing bags widely should have done something, according to national statistics, and it sure did,” Kron said. “Our bags said ‘Hunger craves attention,’ and we were able

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man who police have said choked and threatened to kill his girlfriend, and later forced his way into another apartment while running from police, will find out Thursday whether his bond will be reduced to an amount he can afford.

Eric A. Harris, 24, of the 900 block of West Hillcrest Drive, is charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, resisting arrest and trespassing. If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated domestic battery, he could face three to seven years in prison.

Police said in court records that when Harris’ girlfriend told him on

Friday that she wanted to break up, he threw her down, punched her in the face, choked her, and then grabbed a knife and said he’d kill her. The attack occurred at Harris’ apartment; he left before police arrived, records show.

Harris ran from a police officer who tried to arrest him Saturday, then broke into a University Village Apartment in the 700 block of North Annie Glidden Road, records show.

Harris is on probation after being convicted in Eric A. Harris 2015 of domestic battery and unlawful restraint, court records show. When asked whether he could post $1,000 to be released, he said, “I can post $575 right now.”

He’ll be back in court at 9 a.m. Thursday for a bond reduction hearing. If he were to post bail, he would not be allowed contact with the victim and would be placed on GPS monitoring.

City Council approves new training for police

SYCAMORE – Sycamore police officers will undergo new training this year through the North East Multi-Regional Training program.

The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday adopting an intergovernmental agreement to create a mobile in-service training team for Sycamore officers through NEMRT. NEMRT is part of the larger Illinois ASSIST Program and provides in-service training to law enforcement and corrections personnel throughout the metropolitan Chicago area. Thousands of officers from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana have trained in the program since it began in 1983, according to its website.

With the city’s involvement in NEMRT, Sycamore police officers will have access to in-person and online training programs, with content ranging from refresher training to university-directed “staff and command” courses.

“Agencies and jurisdictions work together to achieve training, both mandated and some elective training,” City Manager Brian Gregory said.

Tronc in talks to acquire Chicago Sun-Times

CHICAGO – Two longtime newspaper rivals in the once highly competitive Chicago market may end with the acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times by the owner of the Chicago Tribune, which has grabbed the attention of the U.S. Justice Department on Monday.

Chicago-based Wrapports LLC announced in a statement it has agreed to enter into discussions with tronc Inc., owner of several major newspapers, after failing to interest other media companies in acquiring the Sun-Times.

In a statement, Wrapports states if tronc acquires the Sun-Times, it would operate the newspaper as a separate unit, keeping in place the independent newsroom.

“The investors and board members of Wrapports have been committed to keeping a strong media voice in Chicago alive,” Wrapports Chairman John Canning said. “We believe an ownership that

can bring substantial digital resources is necessary and is the best path for the Sun-Times long term.”

Wrapports said it voluntarily informed the U.S. Justice Department of its talks with tronc and will accede to the department’s suggestion to advertise that the Sun-Times is up for sale.

The ad will be placed in the Sun-Times on Tuesday.

Auditor fined over reports filed as House member

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Board of Elections imposed a $5,000 fine Monday on a defunct campaign fundraising account linked to Auditor General Frank Mautino, the stiffest fine allowed by law, although it likely will never be collected because the committee has dissolved.

The board voted, 6-2, that the committee, which financed campaigns during the Spring Valley Democrat’s 24 years as a state representative, failed to cooperate with the board by supplying documents to provide detailed explanations for more than $400,000 in campaign spending.

Some board members said they wished they could take harsher action but were hamstrung, and others urged a halt to

proceedings until a possible federal investigation plays out.

Streator resident David Cooke, who said he’s not active in either political party, pursued the matter after several watchdog and news media groups reported that Mautino’s campaign paid about $225,000 to a Spring Valley service station for gas and vehicle repairs and more than $200,000 to a local bank.

He was exasperated because board members said they could only act on Mautino’s lack of cooperation, nothing more.

Obama Foundation reports $13M in donations in 2016

CHICAGO – Tax documents show the foundation that’ll construct and oversee the Obama Presidential Center received around $13 million in contributions last year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Obama Foundation released a tax return Monday.

Several $1 million donations were made, including from the George Lucas Family Foundation. The “Star Wars” creator is married to Mellody Hobson, who is president of Chicago-based Ariel Investments.

Gun demand rises in Chicago despite waning nationally

CHICAGO – The appetite for legal firearms is on the rise in Chicago, even as demand appears to be waning nationally.

Illinois State Police say the number of firearm-owner identification applications in Chicago doubled from about 19,600 in 2014 to nearly 39,000 last year.

Applications are on pace to surpass that this year.

FBI figures show federal background checks nationwide hit high levels at the end of 2016 and dropped 11 percent during the first four months of 2017, compared with the same period last year.

Courts struck down Chicago’s ban on handguns in 2010 and lifted the ban on gun shops in the city in 2014, although there still are no registered gun stores in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported.

U.S. accuses Syria of mass killings, burning bodies

WASHINGTON – The U.S. accused Syria on Monday of executing thousands of imprisoned political opponents and burning their bodies in a crematorium to hide the evidence.

The allegation could test the Trump administration’s willingness to respond to atrocities, other than chemical weapons attacks, that it blames on President Bashar Assad’s government.

The allegation of mass killings came as President Donald Trump weighs options in Syria, where the U.S. launched cruise missiles on a government air base last month after accusing Assad’s military of killing scores of civilians with a sarin-like nerve agent.

Trump on Monday kicked off a week of meetings with Middle East leaders, sitting down with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi a day before he hosts Turkey’s president. Trump flies to Saudi Arabia later this week.

All are governments that have pressed the U.S. over six years of civil war in Syria to intervene more forcefully.

Trump had backed away from President Barack Obama’s calls for regime change in the Arab country, with the new president’s officials pointedly saying leadership questions should be left to Syria’s citizens, until his intervention last month. His administration now says Assad cannot bring long-term stability to Syria.

In its latest accusations of Syrian abuses, the State Department said it believed about 50 detainees each day are being hanged at Saydnaya military prison, about 45 minutes north of Damascus. Many of the bodies are then burned in the crematorium “to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place,” said Stuart Jones, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, accusing Assad’s government of sinking “to a new level of depravity.”

The department released commercial satellite photographs showing what it described as a building in the prison complex that was modified to support the crematorium. The photographs, taken over the course of several years, beginning in 2013, do not prove the building is a crematorium, but show construction consistent with such use.

The revelations echoed a February report by Amnesty International that said Syria’s military police hanged as many as 13,000 people in four years before carting out bodies by the truckload for burial in mass graves.

Although the State Department cast its unusual news conference as an effort to press Assad’s key backers, Russia and Iran, it also underscored Trump’s lack of a strategy for stopping Syria’s violence.

The war has killed as many as 400,000 people since 2011, contributed to Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II and enabled the Islamic State group to emerge as a global terrorism threat.

Trump had been highly critical of Obama for failing to respond to earlier chemical weapons attacks in 2013 after setting a “red line”

against such usage. After last month’s attack in northern Syria, Trump said the Syrians crossed “a lot of lines” for his administration. Beyond authorizing cruise missiles in response, however, he didn’t outline a strategy to eliminate the threat.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Monday reiterated the administration’s line that Syria’s future “should be decided by Syrians in a free credibly and transparent process.” But he called such a future “unimaginable” if Assad is propped up with help from the “seemingly unconditional support from Russia and Iran.”

Russia has shown no inclination to drop its support for Assad. It now is pushing the idea of “de-escalation zones” that would be designed to reduce violence, while not challenging Assad’s authority over almost all of Syria’s major cities.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had been “firm and clear” in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov last week that “Russia holds tremendous influence over Bashar al-Assad.”

SYCAMORE – If there’s any wonder how Le Print Express has stayed open 20 years, a recent spirited anniversary soirée answered that question.

It was a business-after-hours celebration May 4, with dozens packed into the 2,500-square-foot business, laughing, eating, drinking and reflecting on longstanding relationships with owner Nancy Perkins and her staff.

“When you come in here, you will talk to us, actually get to know us, and we’ll get to know you,” said Tina Vavra, who’s worked in the shop six years.

“You’ll always get a personal response.”

“If you can give excellent service to a customer, they’re going to stay your customer,” Perkins said.

She has a master’s degree in education, and taught in Champaign until she and her husband, Jim, had their children. Then they owned and operated a children’s clothing store in Champaign before moving up here.

She decided to go into the printing business because of the chance to flex her creative muscles.

“I like the creativity to it,” Perkins said. “There’s something new every single day.”

“We see everything, every request you can think of,” Vavra added.

Kelly Sullivan graduated from William Rainy Harper College with her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice. She then earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from Elmhurst College.

In 1998, Kelly began her career in law enforcement as a Sheriff’s Deputy with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police. She worked in the patrol division for three years and was an Accident Investigator. Kelly was hired by the DeKalb Police Department in 2001, as a patrol officer. Kelly served as a patrol officer for five years. During her time in patrol she was a Field Training Officer and trained new recruits. In 2006, Kelly was assigned to the Investigations Division of the DeKalb Police Department.

During her time in the Investigations Division she investigated a variety of crimes including robberies, burglaries, sexual assaults and death investigations. Kelly is a state certified Crime Scene Investigator and a member of the DeKalb County Major Case Squad. In 2016, Kelly was assigned as the Community Relations Officer and Training Coordinator. As the Community Relations Officer, Kelly focuses on building relationships with various groups, businesses and stakeholders within the community. As the graduation season is upon us, we look ahead at what’s next for those graduating and what the next group replacing them will bring. Whether it’s looking at your next school and the challenges that the next level of education will bring or a start of a career with a new job to start you on your way for the rest of your life, it’s an exciting and anxious feeling.

We live in a community that will be celebrating a number of different types of graduation in the coming month. Northern Illinois University just completed its commencement ceremonies and Kishwaukee College will do the same this weekend. Not only do we have local high schools graduating but with the NIU Convocation Center hosting additional schools, we’re the center of high school graduations in the area.

Registration legislation a start, but keep going Legislation to implement automatic voter registration for people seeking new or renewed driver’s licenses passed the Illinois Senate unanimously last week and awaits action in the House.

This is the second time around for the bill, sponsored by state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill. A 2016 version was vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, who suggested safeguards that Manar has since incorporated into the new bill.

“That is without question going to lead more people, more citizens of our state, regardless of where they live, regardless of party affiliation, participating in our electoral process,” Manar told the Chicago Tribune. “And regardless who wins an election, we all win as citizens of the state of Illinois.”

Manar evidently is passionate about getting more Illinoisans on the rolls of registered voters.

But what a messed-up, politically self-serving electoral process those new voters will find themselves in.

Voters want competition and choices so their votes make a difference. Voters want privacy.

And voters want concise, not endless, election campaigns.

In all of the above, Illinois’ political leaders have failed to deliver.

Competition and choices are limited in two ways.

• Gerrymandered districts for the Legislature and U.S. House stifle competition by creating “safe” districts. As proof, in November’s election, 59 percent of Illinois House seats were uncontested, as were 70 percent of Illinois Senate seats.

• Illinois has so many local units of government (nearly 7,000 of them) that they can’t find enough people to run for all the elected positions, let alone give voters competitive choices.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Voter privacy is invaded every two years in the March primary, when voters are asked which party ballot they wish.

The preference is dutifully recorded and kept in the county clerk’s office.

Illinois’ extended campaign season is the result of holding its even-year primary nearly eight months before the general election. The petition-filing season is three months before that, and the petition-circulating season starts several months earlier.

The result is a governmental system that constantly must operate in the shadow of the next election.

We wouldn’t mind if Manar’s automatic voter registration bill becomes law.

But if Manar and his legislative colleagues really want more people to vote, they should not stop there.

A redistricting reform constitutional amendment – such as last year’s proposed Independent Map Amendment backed by more than half a million citizen signatures but struck down by the Illinois Supreme Court – should be introduced, approved and put before the voters.

Illinois’ unwieldy layers of duplicative local governmental units should be consolidated.

An open primary system, where voters aren’t asked their party preference, should be passed.

And the state’s primary should be moved from March to August to condense the election season and free up more time for governing.

The problem with these reforms is, the ruling political class in Illinois doesn’t want them, so voters won’t get them.

In the end, we fear, automatic voter registration will wind up masquerading as real election reform while masking larger problems that fuel voter apathy.

Police shooting into cars often ends in tragedy

Jordan Edwards should not be dead at the age of 15. But the African-American teen was shot and killed on the night of April 29 by a suburban Dallas police officer.

Jordan died when officer Roy Oliver of the Balch Springs, Texas, police department discharged his weapon at a moving car in which Jordan was riding. Balch Springs police are not authorized to shoot at moving vehicles, unless they reasonably believe firing at the driver might be necessary to end an immediate threat to the officer or others.

Nothing about the situation – Jordan was a passenger – seems to indicate that exception applied. Oliver has been fired and arrested on criminal charges.

That is well and good, in terms of retrospective accountability. What remains to be seen, however, is whether this eminently avoidable tragedy will catalyze necessary policy changes on a national basis.

Specifically, despite widespread acknowledgment that it is more often than not futile, and dangerous, for police to try to stop moving vehicles with gunfire, officers around the country continue to do so. And civilians continue to lose their lives as a consequence. The Post database of fatal police shootings has recorded 193 incidents in which police shot and killed people inside vehicles, only 86 of whom were reportedly armed. It stands to reason that these fatalities represent only a portion of all police shootings at vehicles.

Many big-city departments have a flat

ban on deadly force against moving vehicles; New York was the first to adopt such a policy 45 years ago. As it happens, the 2016 edition of the Balch Springs department’s own instructions to officers states the rationale for avoiding such shootings well: “Because of the low probability of penetrating a vehicle with a handgun, officers threatened by an oncoming vehicle should attempt to move out of its path,” instead of shooting. And yet Balch Springs, like many of the country’s 16,000 police agencies, still allowed an exception that can, on occasion, swallow the rule.

To be sure, it’s all too easy, in this era of terrorist truck and car attacks, to imagine cases in which officers might have no choice but to shoot at a vehicle and its occupants.

That reality argues against an inflexible ban. Still, such truly justifiable cases are likely to be exceptional, not weekly, occurrences; and the Post database suggests that American law enforcement has shot at a vehicle at least weekly since January 2015. Police need to focus anew on both training and doctrine, with an eye toward the identification and adoption of best practices, so as to eliminate the risk of another young person winding up dead before his time. As the Balch Springs police policy clearly and correctly says: “Foremost to any consideration of the application of lethal force is the preservation of human life.”

Mikulski was elected to the Baltimore City Council in 1971 and to Congress in 1976. Cardin was elected to the state Legislature in 1966 and to Congress in 1986. Both saw successive Maryland governors, Spiro Agnew and Marvin Mandel, ousted from office under criminal charges. Both surely wanted a competent and apolitical federal prosecutor and believed they had one in Rosenstein.

This makes mincemeat of Democrats’ cries that Trump fired Comey to kill any investigation of Russian collusion in the presidential election. Rosenstein will be in charge of that, seeing as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself. And Trump’s nominee for FBI director will receive close scrutiny from the Senate.

It’s similarly far-fetched to compare this to Richard Nixon’s firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox in 1973.

For some Democrats and journalists, every Republican military initiative is Vietnam and every possible scandal Watergate. That’s a measure of the nostalgic perspective of the baby-boom generation. We’re as many years away from Vietnam and Watergate as they were from the 1920s.

Can something be said in defense of Comey? He was put in a terrible position by Bill and Hillary Clinton and the Obama Justice Department. Justice officials downplayed the criminal nature of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails and granted immunity to Clinton aides rather than summon them before a grand jury. That amounts to weighting the scales of justice in favor of the administration’s preferred candidate for president.

So does the June 27 meeting on the Phoenix airport tarmac of Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who revealed herself to be a shameless political hack. That meeting was surely intended to be secret, as was the illegal Hillary Clinton email setup, with which she sent easily hackable classified information.

When the meeting was revealed, Lynch said she would go along with the FBI’s decision on prosecution but didn’t formally recuse herself. One question never answered is why she didn’t do so and let Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates (the latest liberal “hero” for her bewildering congressional testimony this week) make the decision.

One can understand why Comey could have felt miffed when Lynch left him publicly exposed as the one who would decide whether the putative Democratic presidential nominee would be criminally prosecuted. If an FBI director shouldn’t decide who gets

prosecuted, as Rosenstein correctly argued, he certainly shouldn’t have to make that call when the decision could determine who will be elected president of the United States.

Comey’s July 5 statement made clear that Hillary Clinton had violated Title 18, Section 793(f) of U.S. Code, put in place by the Espionage Act. But he added to the words of the statute an intent requirement and so recommended that she not be prosecuted. It’s not hard to imagine that he felt entitled to inflict political damage on someone for whom the Obama Justice Department had put in the fix.

That makes Comey only the latest victim of the Clintons, who, like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tom and Daisy Buchanan, smash up “things and creatures” and then retreat “back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it [is] that [keeps] them together, and let other people clean up the mess they [have] made.”

The mess continues, as Democrats howl against the removal of an official whose removal they demanded up through lunchtime Tuesday and continue to search, Ahab-like, for evidence that Russia somehow stole the election.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Trumpcare’ and pre-existing conditions

may cause many of us bouts of anxiety (also a pre-existing condition), we can take solace that Kinzinger and the rest of the House Republicans made sure that they and their office staff will not have this problem.

Trumpcare contains a line that exempts members of Congress from insurance companies discriminating against them because of a pre-existing condition.

I don’t know about you, but I will be able to sleep better knowing Kinzinger is covered.

Why did President Donald Trump fire FBI Director James Comey now?

The answer, as my Washington Examiner colleague Byron York has argued, is that he waited until after his impeccably apolitical deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, was in place as Comey’s direct superior.

Rosenstein was confirmed April 25, and his memorandum titled “Restoring Public Confidence in the FBI” was appended to Trump’s firing letter exactly two weeks later.

In that document, Rosenstein characterized Comey’s July 5 statement on the FBI’s investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s secret email system as “a textbook example of what federal prosecutors and agents are taught not to do.” In support of that proposition, he cited comments from five former deputy attorneys general and four former attorneys general of both major political parties (including Eric Holder, who held both offices).

Who is Rosenstein? He started off as a career Justice Department lawyer and was appointed U.S. attorney for Maryland by George W. Bush in 2005.

He was one of only three – out of 93 nationwide – U.S. attorneys kept on during the Obama administration.

This could not have happened without the approval of Maryland’s Democratic senators, Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin.

LAKE FOREST – Joel Bouagnon took the 75-minute drive last week from his home in St. Charles to Halas Hall, where he began the next step in his football career at Bears rookie minicamp.

“It’s a little like, ‘Damn, this is an NFL building.’

You’re around the best-of-the-best type of players.

You’re just trying to take it in,” Bouagnon said after practice Saturday. “Honestly, I was eager to learn right away. You kind of want to get in that playbook as soon as you can. That’s going to be the big thing.”

The former Northern Illinois running back was one of 13 undrafted rookies to sign with the Bears after the draft.

“It’s not disappointment,” he said, recalling the end of the draft last month. “The second the draft is over, you’re getting phone calls and have to make decisions quick. It’s honestly not disappointment.

You’re on an NFL team. Picked up the Bears’ phone call and I’m happy to join them.”

In 2016, Bouagnon had 182 carries for 885 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging a career-high 4.9 yards a carry. His overall production, however, decreased from 2015, when he had 101 more carries, which led to 1,285 yards and 18 scores.

Bouagnon said a new offensive coordinator, more passing and two-back sets led to the dip in overall touches, but he noted that he still came close to 1,000 yards, even with fewer carries.

During the three practices over the weekend, Bouagnon wanted to show the Bears coaches his abilities in pass protection.

“I can pick that up pretty quickly and just insert myself in the right area,” he said. “And also my patience in my running. I want to show that I can do more than just truck people over. I can be a patient runner as well.”

Between now and the first OTA practice with the veterans, it’s all about speed for Bouagnon.

“Everybody plays fast. Stronger, faster,” he said.

“I’m going to have to get used to it. I’m sure it’s going to get faster with the pads on.”

The playbook for rookie minicamp gave Bouagnon a crash course in the mental aspect that needs to get up to NFL speed.

“You get a set amount of plays, but it’s like, learning them the night before, the install and then you’re right out to practice right away, and practice tempo is pretty quick,” he said. “The bigger challenge is learning it quicker and applying. It’s one thing to memorize, but then to apply it on the field, it’s a whole different thing.”

Born in California, Bouagnon didn’t grow up with a favorite NFL team, but his family and friends have been “blowing up” his social media with eagerness to watch him nearby.

“A lot more people are excited because they’re going to get to see it,” he said. “I’m right in their backyard. High school here, college here and now the pros. … I have people asking already [to come to Bourbonnais], but I’ve got to focus on me right now.”

Joe Wilson and Griffin Rissman had big days at the plate, and the No. 8 seed Timberwolves kept their season alive with an 8-2 victory over No. 9 seed LaMoille in a play-in game of the Class 1A Amboy Regional in Shabbona.

“Having the bottom of the lineup – which kind of has that stigma of, ‘Oh, the bottom of the lineup,’ – having them get on base and make things happen was huge for us,” Indian Creek coach Kevin Poterek said. “It kept the top of the order rolling over and kept the spark going.”

Wilson, who is the No. 7 hitter, and Rissman, who is the No. 9 hitter, were perfect in six combined plate appearances. Wilson went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Rissman

went 2 for 2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored “It really helps to get guys on, especially if we’re on because the top of the order comes up and it’ll help a lot because they’re consistently hitting almost every game,” Wilson said. “If we’re on base, they’re going to get us to score.”

It was the third win of the season for the Timberwolves over the Lions.

Indian Creek won 4-2 and 11-0 in five innings in the previous two meetings.

“I think it lets them be a little confident knowing we had the ability to beat them,” Poterek said. “We’ve shown it twice. I don’t think that led to them coming in and not being ready. I thought they were ready to go.”

The Timberwolves (8-15) collected 11 hits Monday and got on the board early. They got a big swing of momentum in the top of the first inning. By the numbers: For Indian Creek, Cursio went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Simpson went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Cooper Larsen went 1 for 2 with two walks. For LaMoille, Clay Sundberg went 2 for 4 and had a double in the top of the seventh inning.

Beyond the stats: The Timberwolves had lost four of their final five games of the regular season. However, Poterek said, despite the losses, he felt that they weren’t playing poorly and was confident heading into the postseason.

They said it: “Out of those five games, there was only one that I felt we didn’t play well,” Poterek said. “Otherwise, of those four losses, I told them that we lost, but we looked better as a team. We were making strides.”

Hiawatha holds off Orangeville’s rally attempt

sports@daily-chronicle.com KIRKLAND – In a wild final three innings, No. 10-seed Hiawatha held on to eke out an 8-7 victory over No. 11 seed Orangeville on Monday in a Class 1A Freeport Aquin Regional play-in game.

Hiawatha (5-14) scored four runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead into the final inning, but gave back three runs on miscues, including a dropped third strike and an error on a forceout play, to start the top of the seventh inning. Relief pitcher Ethan Hoffman walked the next batter to load the bases with no outs.

Hoffman got Broncos hitter Andy Alber to pop up on the infield and Breyton Schofield to ground out to second, scoring a run that cut the Hawks’ lead to 8-5.

The next two Orangeville batters hit RBI singles to score two more runs and put the go-ahead run on first base.

“They got a couple hits, we made a couple errors, but (you) just shake it off,” Hoffman said. “Just let them hit it. We got guys.”

Hoffman settled in and struck out the final batter to end the game.

“I was just wondering when we were going to get an out. One of the batters, we should have had him out twice,” Hiawatha coach Nathan Hoffman said.

“It was kind of just like ‘here we go,’ but we got the outs that we needed.”

The Hawks built up the four-run cushion in the bottom of the sixth inning by capitalizing on a Broncos error.

After Mitchell Manka drew a walk and Ty Kilcullen singled, Braden Watson grounded out to second, scoring Manka.

Then Hiawatha starting pitcher Adam Spear hit a line drive that went in between Broncos second baseman Andy Alber’s legs. Two runs scored and Spear slid safely into third on the error.

“It was exciting,” Spear said, “It’s (my) possible last game as a senior. I was just trying to make it not my last game. It was a little pressure, but I worked through it.”

Elliott Mains doubled to score Spear, which ended up being the winning run.

Orangeville (0-20) briefly took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. After Spear walked two batters between a pair of outs, Orangeville’s Austin Guy smashed a rocket off third baseman Jacob Edwards’ glove, scoring one run.

Ian Wilson and Evan Edler both came up with RBI singles in the inning for the Broncos to take the lead 4-2.

The Hawks came back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game with two runs. Braden Watson scored on a sacrifice fly by Spear and Max Freund scored on a wild pitch.

“It’s not fun to get that close and not win, of course, but our kids showed some life there, worked hard, and did what I asked them to do. It just didn’t

work out for us. We didn’t give up though,” Orangeville coach Andrew Janecke said.

By the numbers: For Hiawatha, Freund went 3 for 4 with two runs, Spear went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Mains went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk, Kilcullen went 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored, and Jacob Edwards went 1 for 1 with a walk and a run scores.

Beyond the stats: Hiawatha had the first two innings end on pickoff plays as Spear got picked off second in the first inning and Jonnie Moore got picked off first in the second inning.

They said it: “I was very proud of how we came back,” Hiawatha coach Nathan Hoffman said. “Sometimes when we got down a couple runs we kind of hang our heads, but we did not do that today and that’s what we are going to need to do going forward.”

Up next: Hiawatha takes on top-seeded Aquin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Freeport.

Reynolds went 3 for 4 offensively and allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out eight to get the win.

Kaneland edges Sandwich: The Knights didn’t need much offense in a 3-2 win over Sandwich.

Luke Calabrese went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Josh Pollastrini went 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI, and Josh Norman added an RBI for the Knights (17-13).

Northern Illinois lost a lopsided series finale, 14-3, at home to Eastern Michigan on Sunday as the Eagles picked up a sweep on the road.

Jordan Peterson hit three home runs for the Eagles, including two in one inning – one being a grand slam.

He finished 3 for 6 with nine RBIs. The Eagles (21-31, 12-9 MAC West) scored eight runs in the third inning and five in the ninth.

There was plenty of offense as Sycamore Methodist took down Sycamore St. Mary, 16-14, over the weekend in the DeKalb County Church League.

Crossview Church piled on the runs in the final inning of a 20-3 win over Salem Lutheran, with Charlie Kazda going 3 for 6. Kevin Lindgren picked up the win for Crossview.

After another strong showing, NIU distance runner Hope Schmelzle was named the MAC Most Outstanding Track Performer after the MAC Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Schmelzle won the 1,500-meter run Saturday, and the Huskies finished in fourth place as a team with 84.50 points.

Junior Lorena Martin won the 800-meter run, senior Kedisha Dallas was second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, and Chennel Palmer was tied for third in the high jump.

In the fifth, Nelson helped the Barbs (12-15-1) hold off the surging Rockets with her bat as well. She hit a single that produced two runs. Then in the seventh, leading 14-10, Nelson, with some defensive help behind her, got two outs. The Rockets managed to put another run on the board before Nelson struck out her last batter looking.

“Offensively, I thought it was really solid,” Riggs said of her performance in the win. “Defensively, [we] were a little shaky. I thought I could have cleaned it up a little and helped the team out on defense in the last innings.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. – A day after struggling designated hitter/outfielder Cody Asche was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, the White Sox recalled right-hander Gregory Infante from there.

Infante, 29, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since appearing in four games for the Sox in 2010, expressed thanks to coaches and managers who he said helped him climb back.

One of them was his winter ball manager in Venezuela, former Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.

“He told me to have confidence in my fastball and to attack the strike zone,’’ Infante said. “To be confident in my stuff. I did it in Venezuela and it was good for me. I translated that work to spring training, Triple-A, and now I hope to carry it over here in the majors.

“When someone like him tells you the way the game should be played and the way you should approach the game, you have to take that because he’s a person who is very knowledgeable about baseball.’’

Infante was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA, three saves and 16 strikeouts over 13 innings at Charlotte.

DeKALB – When the DeKalb softball team exploded on offense in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving them a 10-run lead, the Barbs didn’t know the game still would be a dogfight in their 14-11 win Monday over Burlington Central.

The previous three games had been a roller coaster for the Barbs – winning one, losing one and ending the other in a tie.

“It was really a good win for us,”

DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “That’s what we are looking for. I like our chances when we are playing good softball.”

The game started and ended with good defense. Neither team managed to score in the first two innings, and then Burlington Central put together some offense and scored two runs in the top of the third inning. The Barbs came right back and scored four runs in the third, taking a 4-2 lead.

The Barbs’ defense held the Rockets at bay during the fourth inning with sophomore second baseman Mallory Warner making three great defensive plays.

Then, the Barbs bats came alive.

Marcus Smith, the president and chief operating officer of Speedway Motorsports Inc., believes the “bonus tire” is going to add excitement to the race.

“The teams are constantly engineering their way around the boundaries that are set,” Smith said.

“That’s part of the idea in throwing a challenge at these really smart race car drivers. The bonus tire is going to put on a new challenge for them, force them to bring their creativity and thinking, and it’s going to produce a fantastic race.”

Even Smith concedes it is not the sexiest fix under the sun.

“We’ve done the best we know we can do, with the tools we have at this time,” he said.

At a time when anything should go, softer tires were the best the industry could come up with for a showcase event. Here are some other ideas, some realistic and some ridiculous: n Don’t tell teams the rules – segment lengths, inversions, etc. – until the pre-race driver meeting. That gives them about two hours to figure out a strategy. n Stage an iRacing online tournament for the drivers on the infield big screen to set the starting order. n Make the drivers have a foot race to their car on pit road. They can begin the race whenever they climb in. n Raise the purse to $5 million.

Put a playoff berth on the line. Somehow, raise the stakes to make it a meaningful race. n Make it be a true head-to-head of short shootouts in which drivers advance until one is left standing. n Let it be a true race of technology and drivers get to pilot whatever their team builds, ala “run what you brung.”

Smith doesn’t dispute that some of the notions are enticing. He personally favors something from a reality TV format, but doesn’t know how workable it is just yet.

“I’d like it to be like the show ‘Iron Chef,’ and teams show up on Monday and get a secret part,” Smith said.

“There are no rules, whatever you can think of, just figure it out.”

So why not let the teams run whatever they can build?

“Because it would be totally crazy and would favor the most well-heeled teams because they have an advantage,” he said. “One day, I would love to get there, where we can be totally crazy. But this bonus tire is going to be cool. This bonus tire has that kind of potential.”

Smith wouldn’t dismiss possibly moving the race to another SMIowned track: “I won’t say never” when it comes to a move out of Charlotte. As for the track’s road course, could that be in play for the All-Star race? “It could be,” he said.

For now, we’ve got softer tires.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – This is a strange time in NASCAR and one that often feels very close to the Wild West.

In this time of rebuilding, the mindset should be that anything goes and nothing is off the table. NASCAR can tinker with the rules and the regulations and the formats until something absolutely clicks. On Monday, less than two weeks away from the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR went ahead and added a fourth stage to its longest race of the year.

Which brings us to Saturday night’s All-Star Race. If given a blank sheet of paper for a race that is basically a made-for-TV cash grab, why not shake the whole thing up?

Instead, what NASCAR, Charlotte Motor Speedway and the driver council came up with was the optional use of a softer tire for the event. This is as inside baseball as can possibly be. The ability to use a softer tire is something drivers and teams will strategize over, and the true gearheads will get geeked about.

The rest of the world? Well, there are probably a million other options that might have stirred a greater interest.

24 Rare disease has parents worried for daughter Dear Doctors: Our youngest daughter is starting college in New York City this fall, and on top of all the empty nest emotions my husband and I are dealing with, a friend has warned us about something she saw on the news called “rat urine disease.” What is it? Should we be worried?

Dear Reader: There’s nothing like a rare and off-putting health threat to get the 24hour news cycle into a lather. We’ll spare you additional worry and jump right to the point: No, you do not need to add rat urine disease to the list of challenges we all face when a child first leaves home.

That said, the reason leptospirosis – that’s what it’s called – has created headlines is three individuals in the Bronx contracted the disease last winter. One of them later died. But according to health officials in New York, leptospirosis is extremely rare. In a city of 8.5 million residents, between one and three cases of the disease are seen each year. Add in that the disease is treatable with antibiotics, and the threat level plummets.

Now that you’re (hopefully) breathing easier, let’s talk specifics.

Leptospirosis is the name of the disease caused when leptospira, a corkscrew-shaped bacterium, enters the body. It produces a range of symptoms, many of which can be mistaken for other diseases. These include high fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, rash, headache, jaundice and muscle aches. In some cases, infected individuals may not have any symptoms. Untreated, leptospirosis may lead to liver or kidney failure, or meningitis. Treatment is with antibiotics, with early diagnosis yielding the best outcomes.

Although the news reports your friend saw focused on rats, which are the most common carriers of leptospira in urban environments, the bacterium can be found in a range of animals. These include cattle, pigs, dogs and horses, other rodents, and

Infected animals, which don’t show any disease symptoms, will continue to excrete the bacteria for several months or even several years. Humans become infected when they come into contact with either the urine of an infected animal, or its bodily fluids, other than saliva. You also can pick up the infection from a substance that carries the infected urine or fluids, such as soil, water or trash.

The bacterium typically enters the body through the skin, particularly if it is broken because of a scratch or a cut. It also can enter through the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes or nose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wide outbreaks of leptospirosis usually are caused by exposure to contaminated water, such as floodwaters. Person to person transmission is rare.

If you’re still worried, recommend the following precautions to your daughter: • Steer clear of rats and their habitats.

• If you do make contact, wash the affected body part thoroughly with soap and water.

• To clean areas where rats may have been, use one part household bleach and 10 parts water, which kills the leptospirosis bacteria. Wear gloves and goggles.

• If you develop symptoms after making contact with suspected rat urine, whether directly or in a rat-infested environment, seek medical care.

Dear Abby: As DEAR ABBY the only income earner in our Jeanne household of Phillips five, I work long hours. Sometimes I would enjoy talking about my day with my wife of 18 years. While she has no problem staying awake to watch TV or going out with her friends on the weekend, she usually falls asleep right in the middle of what I’m saying. It also happens in the car while I’m driving.

Contrast this to a recent trip she took with her friends where they talked and yucked it up for five hours straight. No matter how tired I am at the end of a long work week, I will do everything in my power to stay awake if there’s something she needs to talk about.

When I tell her it hurts my feelings she doesn’t think I’m important enough to make the effort to stay awake, or at least tell me she’s too tired to talk, I get criticized for not being sympathetic to how tired she is. At first I thought it was true. But now I think her behavior is self-centered. Am I crazy to think this way? – Unheard In Illinois Dear Unheard: You’re not crazy. You seem perfectly rational to me. What your wife is doing when you try to tell her you are hurt is accuse you of doing exactly what she has been doing.

To prevent your anger from building over this, discuss it with her when she’s wide awake – in a marriage counselor’s office, if necessary.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have had two big dogs for several years. In general, they are well-behaved, but they have a lot of energy. I have two kids and limited free time, and my husband no longer walks them. I refuse to do it because the dogs are very strong. They have knocked me over on a couple of occasions.

Because the dogs have no release, we have come home several times to find they have destroyed one thing or another in the house.

I suggested dog training and/or a dog walker, but my husband refuses and promises to start walking them again (which usually lasts a couple of weeks, at most). He was raised to believe dogs are part of the family, ... so when I suggest that we “rehome” the dogs to someone who can devote more time to them, he won’t consider it, saying he could never do that to a family member. I’m at my wit’s end. The situation is affecting our marriage in a number of ways. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. – Lots Of Energy In California Dear Lots Of Energy: Gladly. Enlist your husband’s help once again in walking those “family members” and suggest he take the kids along. They might enjoy the “family” outing, and it would give you some time to yourself. Your reason for not doing it is valid.

You should not risk physical injury. When he stops walking the dogs again in a few weeks, hire the dog walker. If he objects, ask him which is more expensive, this or fixing the damage the dogs invariably cause when they haven’t had enough exercise to tire them out.

I’m sure he will see your reasoning.

The careful players spotted an avoidance play. After winning trick one on the board and playing a club to the king, they crossed to the dummy with a diamond and led another low club.

If East took that trick, South had two spades, four diamonds and three clubs. Most Easts ducked again. Now, after winning with the club queen, declarer played a heart to dummy’s queen to guarantee at least two spades, one heart, four diamonds and two clubs.

Then the noise was North congratulating his partner.
