N.Y. eyes testing for texting in car crashes

ALBANY, N.Y. – Ben Lieberman just wanted to find out what may have caused the head-on collision that killed his 19-year-old son, Evan, on a highway north of New York City.

It took a lawsuit and six months in court to get the cellphone records showing the driver of the car his son was in had been texting behind the wheel.

Lieberman doesn’t believe getting that information should be so hard.

He’s channeling his grief over the 2011 accident into a proposal that would allow police at accident scenes in New York to immediately examine drivers’ cellphones with a device to determine if they’d been tapping, swiping or clicking. It’s been called a Breathalyzer for texting.

“You think people are already looking at phones and it just doesn’t happen,” said Lieberman, who is partnering with the Israel-based tech company Cellebrite to develop the plug-in device that’s been nicknamed the “textalyzer.”

The idea already faces obstacles from constitutional and privacy advocates who are quick to note that police need the owner’s consent and a warrant to get cellphone records. They’re also concerned such technology would be used to access all of the personal information people may have on their cellphones.

“Every fender bender would become a pre-

tense for gobbling up people’s private cellphone information, and we know that cellphones typically contain our entire lives,” said New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman, who is no relation to Ben Lieberman.

At least 46 states have laws barring texting while driving and 14 ban all hand-held devices, but some safety advocates say more needs to be done to enforce the laws.

Deborah Hersman, the CEO of the National Safety Council and a supporter of the “textalyzer” legislation, noted that in 2016, 40,000 people died on the road, a 14 percent jump from 2014 and the biggest two-year jump in 50 years.

“There can’t be a more compelling reason than life or death for saying why we should have access to this information,” Hersman said.

Cellebrite said its technology, which is about nine months away from being finished, sidesteps privacy concerns because it’s designed only to determine usage, not access data. Company officials said the device would only be able to tell if someone physically clicked or swiped the phone during the time of the accident, and then investigators could use that to determine whether they should get a warrant for more detailed information.

“For this device, the whole purpose is not to get any data,” said Jim Grady, the chief executive officer of Cellebrite USA. “So no, police won’t be able to, unless they rewrite our code.”

Items that will not be accepted include explosives, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, biohazard waste, controlled substances, agricultural chemicals, propane tanks, medical syringes and all business wastes.

“I was a little concerned in the beginning, but I’ve picked up everyone from students to professionals, and they have all been very respectful,” Maciejewski said.

With the growing demand for the ride-sharing service in DeKalb from college students and other community members, City Attorney Dean Frieders said the city is looking to improve and expand on it, which fits into DeKalb’s strategic plan of enhancing transportation options for the community.

“It’s a very flexible service, so it has potential benefits, and we’re at a population where we’re starting to see the draw of Uber drivers operating in the city,” Frieders said.

“I think as the city looks at planning transportation as the DeKalb Sycamore-Area Transportation Study looks at it, we have to be open to alternative modes of transportation in a lot of different forms, and this may be one of them.”

The flexibility of Uber is a concern for some local taxi services, however.

Steve Silverstein, owner and operator of DeCab Taxi in DeKalb, which shuttles rides to the Elburn Metra station and provides door-todoor services, said companies such as Uber should be bound to the same regulations as cabs.

“I feel that all services that provide rides for hire in DeKalb should be required to meet the same standards,” Silverstein said. “That would help ensure customers’ safety.”

Although Uber drivers are not bound by the municipal code restrictions taxicabs are in DeKalb, such as annual license fees, they must adhere to the Illinois Transportation Network Providers Act. Silverstein said his drivers are required to have their vehicles inspected by an Automotive Service Excellence-certified mechanic to ensure passenger safety, have a rate card displayed, have two child safety seats and undergo fingerprinting as part of a background check, along with other regulations under the

Some cities, however, such as Rockford and Chicago, have rigorous licensing ordinances for ridefor-hire services such as Uber that must be followed in addition to the state statute, Frieders said.

“Uber is a service that the community desires, but there are some communities that have had adverse incidents involving Uber drivers, and in some cases, Uber passengers,” he said. “So we’re making sure we find the right amount of regulation to keep the public safe but ensure they’re receiving the service they want.”

In order to find the best model, city staff are studying these ordinances – particularly one that recently ended in Bloomington-Normal since it is a college community similar to DeKalb.

Frieders said Uber’s corporate office prefers a memorandum of understanding when it comes to different levels of regulation.

“This is where they essentially indicate that they’ll comply with state law and beyond that, share with us emergency contact information for some of their internal security personnel that if we had an incident, we’d have the ability to go directly

to them and get immediate responses,” Frieders said. “And to the extent that we’ve ever had to interact with [Uber], they’ve been very responsive in that regard.”

City staff will not make any recommendations to the City Council until they’ve determined the effects and benefits any proposed regulations would have on the service in DeKalb.

“We’re studying Uber and making sure our response is appropriate, and then we’ll recommend to the council a reaction that’s appropriate given a full understanding,” Frieders said.

Luckily, the university offered Bergmann, a 2013 Sycamore High School alum, a full scholarship. Four years later, Bergmann graduated from NIU with high honors and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering.

Bergmann was a straight-A student who said she was honored and proud to graduate from NIU, and she can’t wait to begin a master’s program in industrial engineering there in the fall before heading to law school to become a patent attorney.

“NIU was the perfect choice for me,” she said. “The professors really care about their students. I can walk into their offices and get advice about classes and about life. ... I got a great education.”

Rochelle man charged with DUI in weekend crash that killed NIU student

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A student in a master’s program at Northern Illinois University was killed and three others people were injured after a head-on collision on Lincoln Highway that police allege was caused by an intoxicated driver.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel J. Chavez, 25, of the 900 block of Avenue E, Rochelle, has been charged with vi- Daniel J. olations, including ag- Chavez gravated driving under the influence, in connection with the early morning crash, which killed Sai K. Adluru, 23, of the 900 block of West Ridge Drive, DeKalb.

Sheriff’s deputies and NIU police were called about 12:05 a.m. Sunday to the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Nelson Road, just west of the NIU campus.

According to the news release, Chavez was headed east on Lincoln Highway in a 2006 Jeep Laredo when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Adluru.

Police said Adluru was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

His passenger, Charishma Dudde, 23, of DeKalb, was seriously injured; she would later be flown to Rockford Sai Adluru Memorial Hospital, police said.

Orlando Hernandez, 26, of the 3500 block of South 52nd Court, Cicero, was a passenger in Chavez’s vehicle; police said he was seriously injured and taken to Northwestern Kishwaukee Hospital.

Everyone was wearing seat belts, police said.

Chavez was taken to DeKalb County Jail, where he will be held pending a bond hearing Monday, police said.

Adluru came to NIU in spring 2016 and was a student in the master’s program in electrical engineering, according to the NIU Indian Student Association’s Facebook page. He also was a member of the association’s cricket team and was set to graduate in December.

The student association has set up a GoFundMe page, which aims to help Adluru’s family with the expenses of returning his body to his homeland, a funeral and other expenses.

“He was an energetic cricketer representing our university in the Midwestern championships and helping us win games with his brilliance on the field,” the narrative on the fundraising page says. “He was a compassionate human being who never thought twice before lending his hand for help. He was a brother everyone wished they had, and he was all that and more.”

The fundraising effort had netted more than $23,000 within hours of being posted.

“I definitely got a good education,” Sheehan said. “I was able to have oneon-one relationships with my professors, and the class sizes were small. My time at NIU prepared me for the future.

“No matter where you go, you make your own experience. And I got a good one here.”

Kevin Martin, a professor of technology, said the engineering and technology graduates are in high demand and should have no trouble in the job market.

“I’m very proud of them. They all worked so hard,” he said. “They now have great opportunities to find a well-paying job. These students are bright and have the skill sets to succeed. We’ve given them a good applied foundation for the real world.”

Byron Downen of Kingston attended NIU for two years after transferring from Kishwaukee College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accountancy, and said he felt like NIU was the best place he could’ve received his education.

“This is awesome. I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s a relief, but also

sad,” said Downen, who plans to return to NIU to pursue a master’s degree in accounting. “I got a lot of real-world experience. [The College of Business] was a challenge to get through, but I’m very passionate about the subject, so that made it easier for me to push through it.”

Steve Flattum, a 2012 Genoa-Kingston High School graduate, said that while he plans to become a commercial airline pilot, he wanted to get a bachelor’s degree and knew the NIU College of Business would be a good fit.

“NIU is affordable, and it’s a good school. I got a great education,” he said. “I was a commuter student, but I made a lot of new friends and still got the full college experience.”

Michael DeVito of Sycamore said there was never a doubt in his mind that he wanted to attend NIU after graduating from Sycamore High School in 2013. DeVito earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and said he wanted to stay in the community.

“I couldn’t find it in myself to leave here,” he said. “I love NIU, and I’m very proud to be a part of this university. The professors have so much real-world experience, and that’s very helpful to students. I got a lot of experi-

Americans vented similar frustrations this past week in Republican districts crucial to GOP majority control of the House, sounding off about health care and President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey. Democrats see in these displays evidence of the enthusiasm necessary for them to break the GOP’s monopoly control of Washington in next year’s midterm elections.

ISU student fights human trafficking

NORMAL – An Illinois State University computer science major has been working with a Nebraska-based initiative to fight human trafficking.

The Pantagraph reported that Matt Price has been doing programming work for the Human Trafficking Initiative for about 1½ years.

His sister, Crysta Price, started working on the issue five years ago as a research project at Creighton University in Omaha.

She is now co-director of the initiative, which is the research arm of the Nebraska Human Trafficking Task Force.

Crysta focuses on data science while Price is responsible for programming that scans online data.

Gengler said the department itself will investigate how Salters was able to steal a gun on Saturday from a corrections officer who was guarding him.

Saturday’s incident began when Salters grabbed the officer’s gun at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva and took two nurses as hostages. After negotiations broke down, a SWAT team moved in, and the officer shot Salters about 5 p.m.

Chicago police said the two men were stopped at a traffic light at 2:30 a.m.

Man charged in robbery on Chicago-area expressway

CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago man suspected of taking part in the robbery of a man by deliberately crashing into his car and then stealing $120 from him at gunpoint has been arrested.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 55-year-old Peter Ely of Mount Prospect appeared in court on Saturday. A judge ordered him held in lieu of $2 million bail.

The robbery occurred on Jan. 6 , 2016.

Authorities said a man was driving on Interstate 90 near Bryn Mawr when a van struck his vehicle from behind. They allege that Ely climbed from the van, put a gun to the driver’s head and took the money.

Torch-wielding group protests statue removal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A group that included a well-known white nationalist carried torches and chanted “you will not replace us” at a weekend protest in Virginia over plans to remove a monument of a Confederate general.

The protesters on Saturday evening called on officials to halt the removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville and were swiftly condemned by the city’s mayor, who said the event appeared to hearken “back to the days of the KKK,” the Daily Progress newspaper reported.

The Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea said Monday the missile it launched over the weekend was a new type of long-range ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

North Korean propaganda must be considered with wariness, but if confirmed, the claim marks another big step forward in the country’s escalating efforts to field a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

Outside experts don’t believe the North can do that yet, but each new test pushes them closer to the goal.

The launch Sunday is an immediate challenge to South Korea’s new leader, a liberal elected just five days earlier who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea. The country’s push to boost its weapons program also makes it one of the Trump administration’s most urgent foreign policy worries.

The missile flew for half an hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said. Tokyo said the flight pattern could indicate a new type of missile.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency called the missile a “new ground-toground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12” that’s “capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead.” Leader Kim Jong Un was said to have witnessed the test and “hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing,” according to KCNA. The launch jeopardizes new South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s willingness to talk to the North, and came as U.S., Japanese and Eu-

ropean navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific.

“The president expressed deep regret over the fact that this reckless provocation ... occurred just days after a new government was launched in South Korea,” senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan said. “The president said we are leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating.”

Moon, South Korea’s first liberal leader in nearly a decade, said as he took his oath of office last week that he’d be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right.

The U.N. Security Council will hold closed consultations about the launch on Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.N. Mission for Uruguay, which holds the council presidency this month.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said on ABC television that the U.S. has been working well with China, Pyongyang’s closest ally, and she raised the possibility of new sanctions against North Korea including on oil imports.

The Security Council has adopted six increasingly tougher sanctions resolutions against North Korea.

President Donald Trump’s administration has called North Korean ballistic and nuclear efforts unacceptable, but it has swung between threats of military action and offers to talk as it formulates a policy.

Although Trump has said he’d be “honored” to talk with leader Kim Jong Un under favorable conditions, Haley seemed to rule out the possibility. “Having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he’s absolutely not going to do it,” she told ABC.

The silence on patronage jobs is deafening Unqualified? Unreasonable salary expectations? You’re hired in Illinois You are a government worker making $11,000 as a clerk in Washington Park. You want to make more.

You could go to school and improve your job skills, or you could call your political patron, state Sen. James Clayborne, D-East St. Louis, and demand a state job.

When the $55,000 state offer comes, even though you have none of the qualifications, you double down on your weak hand and ask for $75,000. The Illinois Department of Transportation guy doing the hiring writes: “I don’t trust this guy at all.”

Unqualified. Demanding. Untrustworthy. The political juice is so strong with this one you’d think he was one of Clayborne’s female friends getting a state job. Plus Mr. Untrustworthy is hired to buy land for the state – no possibility of corruption there, right?

Three more instances of Clayborne pushing people on IDOT came as the result of an investigation ordered by a federal judge overseeing a lawsuit to expose Illinois patronage hiring at IDOT. Clerks became engineers.

Cellphone salesmen became emergency hires. Required competition for jobs was quashed.

State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, did the same thing, dumping his intern on IDOT. “Her résumé does not reflect qualifications to fulfill the stated duties of the staff assistant position description,” the report said.

And when both Clayborne and Hoffman were called for comment on creating patronage jobs where none should exist, neither thought the public deserved any answers or denials. Silence, just like we get on any issue from cursive handwriting to where they stand on a balanced state budget.

Rod Blagojevich was pretty open about his view on patronage hires and power politics, even trying to sell Barack Obama’s vacated U.S. Senate seat. But it appears “the reformer” administration of Gov. Pat Quinn raised it to a fine art, with 70 IDOT jobs going to the politically connected.

IDOT is supposed to be engineers building transportation networks and improving safety on them. Giving some village clerk a jackpot job buying land with tax dollars is not supposed to be in the equation.

Gov. Bruce Rauner cleaned out a bunch of the IDOT patronage hires, but 36 improperly hired folks remain and are protected by unions. Here’s hoping this lawsuit keeps creating a harsh glare that sends at least some cockroaches scurrying.

We’re starting to think some cockroaches could survive a nuclear disaster, or re-election.

GOP lapdogs lead nation toward dystopia So it begins.

The nation is edging toward the constitutional crisis that many feared would erupt during the Trump administration. Our democracy is more fragile than I knew.

We are so bitterly divided, so consumed by partisanship and tribalism, that we seem willing to destroy the very thing we are fighting over: our country.

Perhaps I’ve been reading too many dystopian novels lately – I’ve finished a re-read of George Orwell’s classic “1984,” I’m currently absorbed by Omar El Akkad’s brilliant and frightening “American War,” and a re-read of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” is next up – but the firing of FBI Director James Comey has the feel of a slide into tyranny.

With the sudden dismissal of the nation’s top cop, President Donald Trump has upended democratic norms, signaled his contempt for the separation of powers and disgraced his office.

No matter what lie Trump tells to try to cover his actions, he fired Comey because the FBI was deepening its inquiry into the Trump administration’s ties to Russia. Rather than cut the investigation short – as the president apparently

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker wanted – Comey was determined to expand it, seeking additional funds to do so, according to published reports.

Trump demands complete and fawning loyalty; he seeks a claque of servile and spineless aides who flatter him with unquestioning support, no matter what he does or says. The president responded to Comey’s refusal to back away from the Russia inquiry as any narcissistic and imperious despot would: Think Peter O’Toole’s Henry II in “Becket.”

But the real problem here isn’t the president. If the U.S. veers away from its democratic heritage, if the nation has been pushed down a path of authoritarianism and tyranny, Trump didn’t do it alone. History will show that he was assisted by powerful Republicans who allowed him to shove aside the Constitution and ignore the laws of the land.

Still, it’s not too late for us to reverse course. We can yet choose a path that respects our traditions, that adheres to our

values, that insists that no man is above the law. Just a couple of generations back, a powerful man was forced to back down when he tried to dismiss those who were investigating his misdeeds.

When President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliott Richardson to fire Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor investigating Watergate, Richardson refused and resigned in protest. Nixon then turned to Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus, but he, too, refused and resigned.

By the time Nixon found someone to do his bidding – Solicitor General Robert Bork – the tide had turned against him.

Congress was furious, as were many Americans.

So far, however, we’ve seen no such profiles of courage from the current lineup of powerful Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rushed to microphones to defend the president. Similarly, there was no great show of respect for the law from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, although he talks a lot about the U.S. Constitution.

(Not that I expected much from Sessions. He is a demagogue interested only in defending white privilege and power, courting authoritarianism, if necessary,

to achieve that end.)

More disappointing were the actions of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who took office last month with a reputation as an ethical straight shooter, a justice official with the courage to do the right thing. That reputation is now in tatters.

Rosenstein wrote the memo giving Trump an excuse to fire Comey, supposedly because Comey was unfair to Hillary Clinton during his investigation into her emails. (That doesn’t pass the laugh test since Trump was praising Comey for that investigation just a few weeks ago.)

Rosenstein’s recommendation that Comey be sacked came just a few days after the FBI director went to him asking for more money for the Russian investigation.

Perhaps there are still some powerful Republicans willing to put country first, to sacrifice power for patriotism.

It’s not too late for them to save the Constitution they claim to revere.

Where can the FBI possibly go from where we are now?

There’s a certain serendipity in President Donald Trump’s precipitation of crisis at the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. America’s federal law-enforcement and intelligence agencies, of which the FBI (or its precursors) was among the first, took shape in the 20th century.

Their rise is inseparable from that period’s dominant themes: national growth, international extension and, comparatively speaking, political consensus.

Certainly, the bitter partisanship of the 19th century, culminating in the Civil War and Reconstruction, helped prevent the development of an American counterpart to, say, the centralized detective force that Joseph Fouché built in France. No party in Congress trusted the other sufficiently to create a secret, or semi- secret, agency that might later be turned against it.

In the 20th century, Republicans and Democrats didn’t agree on much, but more often than not, they shared a sense of core national interests, and, following from that, a sense of who federal detectives and spies might appropriately target (even when that consensus led to excesses, such as CIA domestic surveillance and the FBI’s campaign against the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.). To the

VIEWS Charles Lane extent it guided their oversight of intelligence agencies, that baseline consensus overcame the politicians’ qualms about the undeniable tension between democratic norms on the one hand and the dark arts of surveillance on the other.

As Trump’s bold decapitation of the FBI, and the reaction to it, illustrate, however, this massive agency – 14,000 special agents, an $8.7 billion annual budget – has outlasted the national consensus that gave it life, and upon which its legitimacy ultimately rested.

We are about to learn whether such an institution can preserve its professionalism, and its ethos of nonpartisan national service, at a time when its supposed political masters have lost theirs.

It is a dangerous moment, because history shows that partisan control is the hallmark of illegitimate spying, and that politicized law-enforcement and intelligence cannot be squared with democracy.

What made East Germany’s Stasi so pernicious was not its pervasive snoop-

ing per se, but that a single political party directed the surveillance according to its own selfish interests, as defined by a constantly shifting “line.”

Trump’s ouster of FBI Director James Comey, amid an investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election that Trump won, reeks of self-serving political manipulation, no matter how hard the president and his minions spin it as an attempt to redeem the FBI. What’s also troubling, from the perspective of consensual governance, is that Democrats’ objections to the firing are themselves less than principled – unavoidably so, given their own grudge against Comey for rekindling the email investigation of Hillary Clinton in the final days of the campaign.

The essence of the predicament is that Comey did, indeed, play a part in the election, a fact that itself guaranteed that the winner, whoever it was, could not deal straightforwardly with him.

Imagine if it had been Clinton: What would she have done with Comey – if he didn’t resign and trigger bitter GOP resistance to the person she chose to replace him? A dilemma now is that anyone Trump picks to run the FBI would carry the stigma of being selected with the same hand that dispatched Comey.

The search is on for an independent

person, or group of them, to set this convoluted situation right: a special prosecutor, perhaps, or an independent commission, or aroused Senate Republicans, newly conscious of their constitutional duties.

In Washington’s not-too-distant past, honest brokers could be readily identified and agreed upon: special prosecutor Leon Jaworski to carry on the Watergate investigation after the “Saturday Night Massacre” in 1973; or the members of the commission to investigate the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Today? Not so easy. Comey, as it happens, used to be on everyone’s straight-shooter list, respected for his 2004 threat to resign unless President George W. Bush limited some surveillance Comey deemed unlawful.

In hindsight, Comey’s 2016 performance looks like an attempt to spend that moral capital on behalf of the FBI’s reputation, and his own – while politicos all about him were losing theirs and blaming it on him. Look where he is now.

HorsePower to host show May 29 SHAW MEDIA MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding in Maple Park will host its fourth annual Fun Horse Show on Memorial Day – May 29.

White Sox regain lead from Padres late, add on

CHICAGO – You don’t always have to hit it far to hit it effectively in baseball.

But you do always have to keep your head in the game.

An eight-run eighth inning by the White Sox Sunday proved that, with the biggest “hit” in the 9-3 victory over San Diego arguably a pop-up out to first that scored Todd Frazier from third.

The reason Frazier scored? Padres first baseman Will Myers turned his back on Frazier.

“It was just one of those things,” said Frazier, who had reached on a walk with the bases loaded, driving in the first run of the frame. ‘‘You read what’s going on and take a chance.

“I was just thinking his back was turned, and he threw the ball [home] high enough. It worked out perfectly.’’

And it led to a perfect ending for the Sox, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the interleague series – their first series win since April 28-30 against Detroit. ‘‘We’ll take a win any way we can,” Frazier said of the second consecutive comeback.

A night earlier, the winning run came after a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single.

This time, the big inning featured four walks, a booted ground ball by shortstop Luis Sardinas and Frazier’s heads-up baserunning.

“I think the guys showed a lot of patience controlling the [strike] zone,” manager Rick Renteria said of the inning that saw 14 Sox bat. ‘‘You always want to keep your head up until the play is completely done,” he added of Frazier’s tally. ‘‘You always want to be ready for the next play.”

The inning came too late to give starter Jose Quintana a victory, that going instead to Michael Ynoa (1-0).

But it kept Quintana from a potential hard-luck loss after he made one mistake pitch to Hunter Renfroe in the seventh.

Renfroe’s three-run homer gave the Padres the lead, Quintana having allowed only four other singles.

“It was actually pretty good,” he said of his day overall. “Probably some of the best stuff I’ve featured this year.

Pretty good command. Just a couple of mistakes I made were capitalized on by those guys for a couple of two-run homers.”

It might seem like hoping against hope, but manager Joe Maddon keeps sounding an optimistic note about Arrieta eventually looking like his old self.

“It would be great to have that occur,” Maddon said. “He’s shown flashes of that, I think, this year, also. I have so much faith and confidence in him and his methods and just him.

“You’re pretty aware that I don’t get caught up off the bandwagon very easily. I really believe he’s going to be fine. I believe it’s going to be almost like a snap of the fingers, everything’s going to fall back into place, and you’re going to see this slow method of better, better, better, great.”

Cohen wants to be versatile offensive, special teams weapon

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Tarik Cohen stands 5-foot-6, but John Fox said the Bears rookie running back “views himself about 6-6.”

Addressing the media for the first time as an NFL player, Cohen’s big personality shined as the Bears concluded their rookie minicamp. He joked about the biggest difference he noticed coming from the MEAC to an NFL practice, albeit with mostly firstyear players.

“First thing is less cutback lanes.

So as many 80-yarders I had in college, not going to get quite that many on this level,” said Cohen, known for his explosive runs at North Carolina A&T. “But I still think I could pop out a

few here and there. The defense is way faster than the level I was at.”

Cohen wanted to spend the weekend showing coaches his versatility as a receiver, runner and special-teamer.

He took reps as a punt returner, something he was too valuable to do in college. His role on offense will likely be on third down, Fox said, as a “joker back.”

Jeremy Langford had five receptions on third down last season, which led the Bears but tied for 40th in the NFL. Cohen wants to be a “Tyreek Hill type of player, very versatile, do things in the slot and also out of the backfield and then not to mention also the special teams.”

The offense has lacked that type of weapon in recent seasons, but in lim-

ited reps during rookie minicamp, Cohen showed off the open-field speed that could be an asset for the Bears. He explained what he looks for when he has a chance to take a play to daylight.

“If it’s an aggressive defense, they want to hurry up and get to the point of attack and hurry up and stop me before I get into my cut, and then I can work on the cutback because they’re flowing over the top,” he said. “But if it’s a laid back defense, really tracking my backside hip, then I hit it outside the front door and try to beat the safety and the DBs.” Cohen left his interview adding another nickname to his already long list, saying he can be called “Big Daddy.”

Easier transition for Morgan: Going from Division II Kutztown to the trenches in the NFL won’t be simple

for guard Jordan Morgan, but his experience at the Senior Bowl with the Bears’ coaches prepared him well for minicamp.

“I would definitely say it did, just getting used to a higher level of play than I did play traditionally in college, as well as just terminology and how certain things work,” he said. “I think coming out here, I didn’t even feel a gap. Like, I felt pretty used to it pretty quick.”

Roster move: The Bears signed tryout player Titus Davis, a wide receiver from Wheaton Warrenville South and Central Michigan.

He was with the Chargers in the 2015 preseason and is the older brother of Titans first-round pick Corey Davis.

The Bears waived rookie wideout Levonte Whitfield.

ST. LOUIS – The numbers aren’t getting any better for Jake Arrieta and the Cubs.

Arrieta’s ERA rose from 5.35 to 5.44 Sunday, and the Cubs’ record fell to 1819 with a sleepy 5-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The game was played in front of 47,925 fans. For the second straight day, a Cubs-Cardinals game set an attendance record at the ballpark.

The Cubs and Arrieta keep insisting that the numbers will start trending in the right direction. Of Arrieta’s eight starts this season, only three have been quality starts.

Two years ago, Arrieta won the Cy Young Award with a 22-6 record and a 1.77 ERA. His second half was one for the history books.

Although he was not as dominant last year, Arrieta still managed an 18-8 record with a 3.10 ERA. In Sunday’s game, he worked six innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Yadier Molina tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning after Jedd Gyorko led off with a single.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run shot in the third.

Control wasn’t an issue, as Arrieta threw only 85 pitches while walking one and striking out five. But the Cubs still are waiting for Arrieta’s velocity

Maddon agreed with his pitcher about Sunday.

“I thought Jake was outstanding,” he said. “I thought he had his best stuff all year. They hit two home runs. Give them credit for that. But otherwise, the swings and misses, the pitches in the zones, the takes on their part, I thought he was outstanding.”

A return to 2015 form is almost too much to ask for, and Maddon knows that.

“I think all of a sudden you’re going to see something’s going to click and he’s going to be back close to where he had been,” the manager said. “It’s hard to be where he had been when he won the (Cy Young) award. I’m not expecting that, but more like we had seen last year, more consistency in the velocity.

“Velocity is probably the biggest.

When you start seeing that perk back up and the called strikes and being able to pitch in the strike zone with misses, that’s when you’re going to see him really take off.”

On the offensive side of the ball Sunday, the Cubs were manhandled by veteran Adam Wainwright, who pitched seven innings of four-hit ball.

“We’d like to win a few more games and tighten things up a little bit, but guys are showing up ready to play and going about themselves the right way,” Arrieta said. “We’re just not necessarily getting the results we’d like.

Cogs split high-scoring doubleheader

ecarifo@shawmedia.com GENOA – With 42 runs and 53 hits in 15 innings of softball Saturday, there was plenty of seesawing in the score between Genoa-Kingston and Richmond-Burton.

The Cogs scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win Game 1, 11-10, and the Rockets overcame an early four-run deficit with eight runs in the final two innings of a 14-7 win, as the teams split the nonconference doubleheader.

“I think pitching was kind of an issue for both teams today,” G-K coach Mike Lauer said. “Kids were able to hit. That, in general, with our pitching – we have to get better, find that groove again.”

Alexa Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the Rockets to put them ahead, 10-9, but they didn’t record an out in the bottom of the frame.

Madison Wagner doubled home Ashley Petersen to tie the game, and she moved to third on a Cassie Bade single.

Olivia Simmons walked to load the bases with no outs.

Third baseman Haylie Regnier made a diving play in foul territory on a pop-up hit to Ashley Clemente for the first out. Leah Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk on eight pitches for the win.

The Cogs (23-10) led the game, 5-1, heading into the sixth, but the Rockets exploded for eight runs in the sixth, notching nine of their 14 hits in the game.

The Cogs scored two in the sixth, including an RBI single by Wagner, and two in the seventh. With two on, leadoff hitter Lexi Howie singled to center to score Clemente, and the ball got under the glove of Rodriguez, allowing Meagan Zimmerman to score the tying run.

The Rockets (11-9) were coming off a win Thursday at Burlington Central, and coach Vicki Klopf said her team came out flat in the first few innings Saturday.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t come out with a win, but we battled back in the fifth inning,” Klopf said. “We lost it in the eighth, which kind of stinks.

After the long bus ride, it took them a while to warm up and get in it.”

The Rockets again trailed, 5-1, in the second game, but this time started their comeback in the third

inning, scoring five runs to take the lead. Rodriguez hit her second of three triples on the day to drive in a run, and Ashley Turner, Regnier and Abby Hayden drove in runs in the inning as well.

The Cogs scored two in the fifth on a double to center by Clemente to take the lead back, 7-6.

But the Rockets scored three in the sixth and five in the seventh to put away the game.

“As our season has gone on, something the girls do really well is not getting down on themselves,” Klopf said. “It’s always another bat or another ball hit to them in the field. It’s great I have a team that doesn’t get down on themselves.”

Lauer said he was happy with his team’s performance in late-game situations, but added that he wished the team had that sense of urgency throughout the game.

“We need to sustain that kind of energy all the time, not just because it’s late in the game and we need a run or two,” Lauer said. “But I’m pretty pleased with our effort overall.”

Wagner added two hits in the second game and finished with four runs scored and three RBIs. Olivia Simmons went 3 for 4 in the second game for G-K. Rodriguez had identical stat lines in each game for R-B – 3 for 5, two runs scored and two RBIs. Sophie Schwegel had five hits, four runs and three RBIs. Beyond the stats: With the Cogs up one in the sixth, Lauer emptied his bench to let the backups in. Lauer said he didn’t feel that had an outcome on the game – although the Cogs committed four errors in those final two innings, the errors only led to two unearned runs.

Lauer said the Rockets were hitting the ball so hard – Schwegel had a two-run triple in the seventh, followed by a Rodriguez triple – that it wouldn’t have mattered who was in the field.

They said it: “We were trying to be patient, hit balls that were over the plate,” Lauer said. “That’s what we did. We hit some balls hard, we swung at strikes, and we let balls go. We got enough kids on base, and getting the walk to end the game there was nice.”

Up next: The Rockets return to play in the Kishwaukee River Conference, hosting Johnsburg on Tuesday before hosting Sycamore on Wednesday in a nonconference game. The Cogs head to Plano for a nonconference game Wednesday, then finish their regular season Thursday at Marengo.

Kim becomes tourney’s youngest winner

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Si Woo Kim made Sunday at The Players Championship look like child’s play.

From a tough lie behind the green, in a bunker with not much room between him and the pin, or even standing on the 17th tee and staring at an island, the 21-year-old South Korean never flinched and never made worse than par.

Kim kept a clean card to the end for a 3-under 69 to become the youngest champion in the 44-year history of the biggest tournament this side of the majors.

“I feel like I’m still dreaming that I won this championship,” Kim said after his three-stroke victory.

On a windy afternoon at the TPC Sawgrass, where anything can go wrong without notice, Kim was the only player to go bogey-free in the final round that derailed everyone else in hopeless pursuit of him.

His last hurdle was getting by the final two holes where not even his twoshot lead was safe – the island green at the par-3 17th and a closing hole with water all the way down the left side.

“I wasn’t nervous at all because I was leading,” he said. “I just focused on the middle of the green.”

He landed safely and two-putted from 45 feet, and then smashed another drive down the middle of the 18th fairway.

The only drama at the end came from Ian Poulter, who was happy just to be here.

Two weeks ago, Poulter thought he had lost his PGA Tour card until officials realized a clerical oversight that restored his status and even gave him a spot in The Players Championship. He was the only player to seriously challenge Kim until he ran out of holes, and then it was a matter of finishing second.

Poulter shanked his second shot from the right rough on the 18th, and it bounced off hospitality tents, down a cart path and into a palmetto bush. He took a penalty drop, and then hit wedge over the trees and nearly holed it, tapping in for bogey.

He closed with a 71 and tied for second with Louis Oosthuizen, who shot 73.

“It was a big shock to the system to hit one of those nasty shanks when I’ve hit it as good as I have all week,” Poulter said. “But the fourth shot was pretty special – from one of the worst shots I’ve ever hit to one of the very best.”

The bogey on the 18th was only the second for Poulter over the final 46 of the tournament. As tough as the Players Stadium Course played, his best chance was waiting for Kim to make a mistake, just

“As good as he played yesterday, he’s obviously gone out there today and played even better,” Poulter said. “He’s gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure. ... You have to respect some good golf, and that’s exactly what he’s done.”

Oosthuizen, who fell out of the lead for good with a fairway bunker shot into the water for double bogey on No. 4, watched it all day playing alongside Kim. “If you’re on your game and playing well, that the things you do,” Oosthuizen said. “You just don’t give shots away. If you can do that around this golf course, you can outscore everyone. And he played like someone that was doing it for five or six years, like it was just another round of golf. It just shows you how good a player he is and how cool and calm he is. Never once did he look flustered at all.”

The excitement, good and bad, came from everyone else.

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain hit 8-iron that bounded off the side of a bunker and into the cup for an albatross 2 on the par5 16th. He followed that with a birdie on the 17th, and then holed a long par putt from just off the 18th green. That gave him a 70 and a tie for fourth with Kyle Stanley, a co-leader after 54 holes who shot 75.

The other co-leader was J.B. Holmes, and it was a horror show for the Kentuckian.

Holmes shot 40 on the front nine and still had hope until bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes. And then it turned ugly.

He hit too shots into the water on the

17th and make a quintuple-bogey 8, then finished with a double bogey to close with an 84, the worst finish by a 54-hole leader at The Players.

Holmes wasn’t alone. Defending

champion Jason Day closed with an 80, keeping very much in tact the streak of no winner ever repeating in the Players.

Rickie Fowler, who won the year before, closed with a 79.

As for the winner? That rarely was in doubt for Kim, who finished at 10-under 278 Kim said he wasn’t nervous because of his victory last year in the Wyndham Championship, which gave him a twoyear exemption on the PGA Tour. This victory comes with perks beyond the $1.89 million first prize. He gets a fiveyear exemption on the PGA Tour, and a three-year exemption to the Masters.

The previous youngest champion of The Players was Adam Scott, who was 23 when he won in 2005.

Just over four years ago, Kim came over to America to play the final version of the PGA Tour’s qualifying school. He earned a card at age 17, but he could not become a PGA Tour member until he turned 18 the following June. That card effectively went to waste, and Kim spent the next two years on the developmental tour until earning his card back to the big leagues.

All proceeds will benefit programs and srevices for youth.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Nick Ritchie scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period, and the Anaheim Ducks roared back from an early twogoal deficit to even the Western Conference finals with a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators in Game 2 on Sunday night.

Jakob Silfverberg, Sami Vatanen and Ondrej Kase also scored while the Ducks cracked imposing goalie Pekka Rinne with a thrilling surge of four goals in less than 19 minutes. The Predators hadn’t allowed four goals in any game during their Stanley Cup playoff run before Anaheim finally got rolling for its sellout crowd.

John Gibson stopped 30 shots, and Antoine Vermette had an empty-net goal for the Ducks.

Ryan Johansen, James Neal and Filip Forsberg scored for the Predators Game 3 is Tuesday night in Nashville.

Rinne made 22 saves for the Predators, who faced relatively little ad-

versity while steamrolling the Blackhawks and St. Louis in the first two rounds on the way to the first conference finals in franchise history.

Two days after Nashville’s 3-2 overtime victory at Honda Center in the series opener, Johansen and Neal scored in the opening 8:32 of Game 2.

The Ducks finally awakened at the prospect of their second straight 0-2 series deficit and replied with high-octane hockey – and a few fortunate bounces – that was too much even for Rinne, who hadn’t given up four goals in a game since March 13.

Ritchie, the power forward making his first career playoff run, scored the winning goal in Game 7 against Edmonton. Four days later, he got his next major goal on an exceptional high shot that appeared to glance off Rinne’s mask on the way in.

Anaheim hung on through a frenetic third period, surviving a few mad scrambles before captain Ryan Getzlaf got his third assist of the night on Vermette’s empty-netter.

The Ducks also got several good saves from Gibson, who has raised his level of play from the first two rounds.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Stephen Curry scored 40 points and hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and the Golden State Warriors rallied from way down after Kawhi Leonard was lost to an ankle injury to beat the San Antonio Spurs, 113-111, on Sunday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Draymond Green gave Golden State the lead for good on a three-point play after the Warriors trailed by as many as 25 points.

Leonard left in the third quarter after he re-injured his left ankle, and the Warriors capitalized with an 18-0 run.

Kevin Durant scored 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 34 points, while Zaza Pachulia had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Leonard had 26 points and eight rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge delivered another clutch playoff performance with 28 points and eight boards.

Somehow, these unusually careless, cold-shooting Warriors found a way to keep their unblemished postseason re-

cord alive at 9-0.

Game 2 in the series is Tuesday night back at Oracle Arena.

Curry scored 19 points in the third quarter and went 7 for 16 on 3s and 14 of 26 overall.

Leonard first went down after stepping on a teammate’s foot along the bench after taking a shot. Pachulia later slid into him as he came down from shooting and Leonard fell into the Spurs bench, grabbing his ankle.

Losing Leonard could be a story of this series. He shot 7 of 13 in 23 minutes to go with eight rebounds and three assists. He made all 11 of his free throws.

He sat out Game 6 of the last round against Houston, a 39-point, series-clinching win on Thursday, after injuring the ankle in a Game 5 overtime victory.

Durant has repeatedly spoken of elevating his game when it matters most – and wow, did he do it at the very moment the Warriors needed a huge lift on their home floor.

His 3-pointer with 7:53 to play got Golden State within 94-88, then he drove to his left and right by Kyle Anderson for an emphatic one-handed slam.

increases the risk of developing AMD by a factor of two to four, and the risk persists many years after stopping smoking. It also causes the degeneration to progress faster.

Other risk factors: Having a family history of early-onset or severe AMD and having had a previous stroke or heart attack. There may be an association between AMD and aspirin or blood pressure medications (especially beta-blockers and nitroglycerin), but as of now no causality has been defined.

Heavy alcohol consumption (more than three drinks a day) has been associated with early-onset AMD, but not with late-onset.

In regards to diet, one study followed the dietary habits of 2,525 patients with age-related eye disease. Those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet had a 26 percent reduced risk of developing advanced, severe macular degeneration. Mediterranean diets are high in nuts, fish, vegetables, fruits and whole grains and low in red meat, processed meats and saturated fats.

Antioxidant combinations that include vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as supplements of lutein with zinc, also have been linked to a decreased risk in progression of AMD. So it is possible that deficiencies in these substances may increase your risk.

People who want to decrease their risk factors for AMD should stop, or not start, smoking; they should avoid heavy alcohol use; and if their diet is high in saturated fat, they should consider switching to a Mediterranean diet.

Dear Doctor: I was recently diagnosed with wet macular degeneration and am now receiving periodic injections for the disease. What causes it? Are there any risk factors, such as drugs or diet?

Dear Reader: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of adult blindness in industrialized countries. AMD causes damage to the central portion of the retina, leading to a loss of central (foveal) vision. Central vision is necessary to see those details that allow people to read, drive, watch TV and perform many of the activities of daily living.

There are two types of AMD, a dry type and a wet type. Each causes a change in the retina, which consists of layers of cells in the back of your eye. For those who remember using a camera with film, the retina is like the film upon which images are exposed.

Dry AMD is much more common than wet AMD, constituting 85 to 90 percent of all cases. There has been no single cause established for dry AMD, which occurs when a mixture of protein and fat (called drusen) builds up behind the retinal layers. Dry AMD leads to a slow progression of vision loss over many years. People with dry AMD in both eyes have a 1 to 4.7 percent yearly risk of developing wet AMD. As for wet AMD, it’s caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina.

These blood vessels leak, causing both fluid and blood to pool behind the retina. I regret to say without treatment, the prognosis is not good. The condition can lead to rapid vision loss, causing blindness within months or weeks. While wet AMD accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of all cases, it accounts for 80 percent of the blindness caused by AMD. The biggest risk factor for both types of AMD is age, with people ages 55 to 64 having a 0.2 percent risk of developing the condition, and those older than 84 having a 13.1 percent risk. Neal Asher, an English science fiction writer, said, “It wasn’t until I had been writing on and off for maybe 10 years that I started to establish any kind of routine.”

A bridge expert has a routine, counting winners, losers and highcard points. Also, sometimes he wonders if a key card is on or off -- onside or offside. Ideally, he can make his contract regardless, but sometimes that won’t be possible.

Then he needs to be optimistic or lucky, depending on how one views these things.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads a low trump. East wins with the ace and does well, cashing the heart king and leading a low heart to partner’s ace so that West can play a second round of trumps. How should declarer continue?

In the bidding, South’s one-spade rebid showed a four-card suit and was forcing for one round. (A jump to two spades would have been fourth-suit game-forcing, denying four spades.) When North raised spades, promising four-card support, South had an easy jump to game.

Following West’s excellent lead, East’s demon defense stopped South from discarding a heart loser on dummy’s second high club.

Once declarer sees the 4-1 spade break, he should realize that he needs West to hold the diamond king. After taking trick four in his hand, South should cash the diamond ace and run the diamond queen.

When that wins, he continues with another diamond, ruffing out West’s king. Then declarer can draw trumps ending in his hand and claim.

They have included wastewater disinfection system upgrades to enhance water quality, representing an investment of approximately $865 per household. All system improvements will directly contribute to increased reliability and enhanced process improvements for source-of-supply and water treatment. Examples include: ~ Wastewater Treatment Facility improvements including new pumps, new disinfection process and equipment, new aeration equipment, improved backup power and improved building and grounds. ~ Lift Stations improvements including pump replacements and rebuilds, controls and sta tion hardware upgrades, and installation of generators and remote monitoring systems have improved overall efficiency, reliability and compliance with IEPA standards, as well as reduced issues caused by power outage and improved response time.
