If Band-Aids could fix everything POLL As is the case with most people, going to the dentist is not one of my favorite things to do. Being poked, prodded and drilled on is a painful experience.

For some of us, it is even worse if we have had a traumatic experience with our teeth.

When I was in second grade, I slipped on the school bus steps and cracked my front tooth. Blood was everywhere, and my tooth was nearly gone. I was in the nurse’s office until my mom arrived. We headed straight to a dentist.

To this day, I can remember the smell and sound of the drill. I have had to replace the bonding numerous times over the years, and each time it makes me cringe.

So when my back tooth started to ache, I prayed it would go away. Unfortunately, the toothache has been ongoing for a couple of weeks now. Finally, on Monday, I couldn’t take it anymore and asked a dentist to check it out. I was so nervous I thought I would need a sedative.

Turns out, the dentist couldn’t do anything about it, so they referred me to the endodontist. I was thinking that this means big trouble. Root canal or abscess made the list of possibilities.

On Tuesday, I was at the endodontist where they did a 3-D X-ray and found I had some bone loss, but not enough to warrant this type of pain. I yelped like a baby as he prodded my back tooth. The doc found out that I had a bad infection. So he prescribed me amoxicillin, mouth rinse and pain relievers. I went home feeling hopeful.

CHEEKY MAMA Becca Hirst

Hannah Jo overheard my conversation with her dad about my toothache. She asked me several questions. Why was I eating so much watermelon and yogurt? How bad did it hurt? Hannah Jo seemed very concerned.

She gave me a great big hug and told me she would be right back. I was a bit confused, but she is only 3, so I ran with it.

She came back with a bunch of different Band-Aid boxes.

“Pick one, mama, and I will put it on your tooth,” she said.

I had a choice of Ninja Turtles, Doc McStuffins, Minions and Barbie. I choose the Ninja Turtle one. Then she placed it on my cheek and kissed it.

My heart melted. I was awestruck that I raised a kid that is compassionate. Hannah Jo never ceases to amaze me. It also makes me sad that one day, she will figure out that Band-Aids don’t fix everything. Some things just need time to heal. Oh, and painkillers!

In honor of his service, a special open house will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. May 24 at the Genoa-Kingston Learning Center at 980 Park Ave. Members of the public are welcome to show their appreciation for Burgess’ leadership.

Kristie Mulso, administrative assistant to the superintendent, said there will be cake and light snacks at the reception.

Sycamore officials looking into why Elgin cop was arrested but not charged

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police Chief Glenn Theriault has been on administrative leave since April 10 as the city investigates why an Elgin police officer arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was released without charges.

Records obtained by the Daily Chronicle through the Freedom of Information Act show a Sycamore officer was building a driving under the influence case against Elgin Police Sgt. Mark Whaley after an early morning traffic stop Saturday, April 8. Whaley, who has been a police officer for almost 23 years, was handcuffed and driven to the police station, where he was processed. Theriault, who worked with Whaley on the Elgin police force, also went to the police station that night.

Whaley later was released without even a traffic ticket because of lack of evidence, according to the police report.

The report shows Whaley, 46, declined field sobriety tests and declined to provide a breath sample at the Sycamore police station. It does not say whether Whaley was issued a DUI ticket or read the “warning to motorist” that could have triggered a suspension of his license for a year for refusing chemical testing under Illinois law.

Cellphone records show Theriault had three early morning phone conversations with an Elgin police commander and later helped to ensure that a $500 administrative towing fee was waived for Whaley, bypassing a hearing process prescribed by city code.

“Tough position for you and all last night,” read a text sent by Theriault hours later to the arresting officer, Luke Kampmeier. “I’m thinking of the rock-and-glass houses story.”

“A valuable experience for me, albeit unpleasant,” Kampmeier replied.

“Tonight we will stick to parking tickets.”

City officials and Theriault have not commented, although in an email to his boss, the city manager, Theriault said he is confident “the outcome will be exonerated” in the case.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said his department had no role in the decision to release Whaley early that morning.

Early morning stop

The episode began around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, April 8. In his report, Kampmeier – who joined the force out of college in 2014 – wrote that he stopped a silver 2005 Ford F-150 pickup on Somonauk Street near High Street after he saw the driver almost cause a traffic crash at the intersection of State and California streets. Reasons given for the stop were noted as “fail to signal, overtake on right, no front license plate.”

In his report, Kampmeier wrote that the driver, Whaley, smelled strongly of alcohol. His speech was “thicktongued,” his eyes glassy and bloodshot, his movements “slow and deliberate.”

Whaley told Kampmeier he had recently dropped off his wife and child downtown, then changed his story to say he was in the area for training and had one beer in Sycamore before driving, according to Kampmeier’s report.

A story by the Daily Herald about Whaley saving a boy’s life with CPR in 2011 said he lived near DeKalb at the time.

After Whaley refused field sobriety tests, Kampmeier arrested him on suspicion of DUI, records show.

A second officer, Blake Powers, a 2016 police academy graduate, searched Whaley’s vehicle and found an unopened bottle of Miller Lite near the passenger seat, according to police reports. Powers stayed on the scene as Whaley’s truck was towed, records show.

“During the investigation, I learned

Whaley was employed by the City of Elgin,” Kampmeier wrote. “I also learned the truck was registered to the City of Elgin.”

Swoboda confirmed the truck is an Elgin police vehicle.

No sergeant was on duty in Sycamore early that morning. Kampmeier contacted the officer in charge, who notified Cmdr. Mike Anderson, who contacted Theriault, phone records show.

In a text message exchange that apparently was with Anderson, Theriault asked the commander to go to the station. Anderson said he would update the chief if something went wrong.

“I’ll go in as well, just don’t want them feeling unduly pressured by the former EPD guy/chief,” Theriault told him by text. Theriault worked for Elgin police for 20 years, rising to the rank of commander, before joining the Sycamore force as chief in January 2015.

SANDWICH – Bringing new businesses into DeKalb County is a major focus for county officials to increase the tax base without a rise in property taxes, County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. said Friday.

“We’re mainly farmland, so if we want our property taxes to go down, to increase our tax base, we’ve got to make sure that we’re bringing in industry,” he said.

Pietrowski gave an overview of DeKalb County developments at the Metro West Council of Government’s 10th annual State of the Counties Luncheon in Sandwich. Elected officials and county administrators from DeKalb, Kendall and Kane counties attended, and the chairmen of the three counties each presented updates.

In DeKalb County, a state-approved Enterprise Zone offering incentives for developers in certain areas is one tool being used to attract business, Pietrowski said.

The county has 11 ongoing projects with a total capital investment of $38 million, and officials are working to draft a comprehensive economic development strategy by the end of summer, he said.

Another way officials aim to make the county business-friendly is by working with farmers who want to add agriculture-based business onto their land, the way Whiskey Acres has.

“We’re not throwing out all regulations; we want to work with you,” he said. “We don’t want to be a county that has an overabundance of regulation that impedes growth, but we do

Despite wanting to encourage business development, the county board put plans for solar and wind companies looking to build in DeKalb County on hold with an 18-month moratorium, which Pietrowski also pointed out in his address.

He said board members will take the time to research and hear from property owners and neighbors before developing a clean energy ordinance, or deciding to continue on a case-by-case basis with special-use permits.

“[The moratorium] does not mean that we’re anti-clean energy at all,” he said. “What this means is we want to make sure we get the process right.”

Other projects Pietrowski highlighted include installing new bike paths that extend the Great Western Trail and improving countywide transportation options.

He said connecting the communities within DeKalb County via the bike path will not only be a recreational feature but also a safety enhancement for those who do not drive.

“We don’t want them walking at night with groceries, and then there’s cars speeding down the road at 65

miles per hour,” he said.

Pietrowski also brought up a recent petition to bring Metra rail service to DeKalb County, adding that the obstacle of cost both for the county and Metra make it an unlikely endeavor in the near future.

However, expanding services with the TransVAC and Northern Illinois University bus systems and investing in a shuttle to the Elburn Metra station are feasible solutions, he said.

“One thing that is possible is more consistent shuttle service and a parkand-ride-type system, so that’s one thing we’re looking into right now,” Pietrowski said.

GEORGE R. ANDERSON

LISA BELL

George R. Anderson, 91, of Siesta Key, Florida, passed away in his home on May 6 after a lengthy struggle with acute myeloid leukemia.

He was born in DeKalb, Illinois on June 5, 1925, and grew up in DeKalb, Sycamore and Chicago. He attended DeKalb Township High School, where he played guard on the famed DeKalb Barbs football champions of the early ’40s. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, he returned to DeKalb, where he lived until his retirement in 1986.

George married Anna Maria Donnini of Florence, Italy, in DeKalb on November 29, 1954. They had one son, Mark, who was born in DeKalb in 1958. Always great with his hands, George worked at various jobs, including as a tradesman in the homebuilding industry, on the factory floor at Anaconda, as a piano regulator in the Wurlitzer factory, and finally as a stationary engineer at Northern Illinois University from 1963 to his retirement. Upon retirement, George and Anna moved to Siesta Key, where they made their home for over 30 years.

George was a proud combat veteran of World War II, having served as a cannoneer in the Army’s Field Artillery. He saw action in New Guinea and the Philippines, took part in the post-war occupation of Japan, and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Battle Stars. In 2014, he published a memoir of his wartime experiences, Army Life 1943-1946: A Cannoneer’s Memoir of Combat in the Pacific.

George was preceded in death by his mother, the former Mary Twomey; his father, Vern Anderson; his brother, Edward (Lucy) Anderson; and his two sisters, Marie (Art) Whyte and Jean (Gene) Adee.

He is survived by Anna M. Anderson, his wife of 62 years; his son, Mark (Mary Fontaine); and two grandsons, Joe and Dan Anderson.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lisa Bell, age 53, of Northfield, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Lisa was born September 22, 1963, in Frankfurt, Germany to Bert and Donna (Asker) Hov. At the age of 18 months, Lisa and her family returned stateside and settled in Washington. In 1969, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and there Lisa graduated from Mitchell High School class of 1982.

She married Jerry Brendle and the couple had two beautiful children, Jay and Lindsey.

The family moved to Burnsville and later divorced.

Lisa worked for Northwest Airlines before moving to Illinois where she worked various jobs. She married Tom Bell in 1997. Lisa was driven to attend college and she received her Associate degree in computer science from Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, Illinois all the while raising her two children. The couple later divorced and Lisa moved to Northfield where she founded Web Kreations where she designed websites for various companies.

Lisa was known for her love for her family and her dog Chico, but she always said her greatest accomplishment was her children.

Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she was a very proud grandma. She had a sense of humor and always made people laugh. She had a big heart and was always willing to help anyone. She is loved by many friends and admired by everyone she met.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and watching cooking shows on television.

She is survived by a son, Jay (Carissa) Brendle of Kirkland, IL; a daughter, Lindsey Brendle (Craig Clarkson) of Kirkland, IL; four grandchildren, Blake, Landon, Logan and Rylee; her mother, Donna Asker of Northfield; her father, Bert (Dee) of Dayton, WA; two sisters, Sherry Kosin of Havana, FL, Debbie (Eric) Nelson of Elko; nephews and nieces, Michelle Braswell, Joshua Kosin, Kelsey Lee, Ryan Ludwig and Justin Ludwig;

Paul Carl “Butch” Brummel, age 78, of Shabbona, IL passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Prairie Crossing Living and Rehab Center in Shabbona, IL. He was born on April 29, 1939 in Naperville, IL the son of Paul H. and Evelyn (Landorf) Brummel. Paul was united in marriage on May 28, 1960 to the former Miss Sharon “Kaye” Campbell and they spent the next 53 happy years together until her passing on November 15, 2013. Mr. Brummel was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Lee, IL. He was also a longtime member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

Paul started farming with his dad in Naperville, IL where they raised pigs and milked dairy cows. When they moved to Shabbona in the early 1970s he and Kaye raised both pigs and beef cattle. His only choice of tractors were Red-International, but he used John Deere equipment to plant and harvest each year. He was very proud of his family.

Many summers they spent camping in the Wisconsin Dells, WI with their daughters, nephews and later their grandchildren.

Dianna M. Cothran, 75, of Elgin, IL has passed away on Tuesday, May 9 2017 at Advocate Sherman Hospital Elgin, IL due to complications.

She was born May 9, 1942 the daughter of John and Madge Adams Popham. She has been a proud resident of Elgin, IL for 47 years. She was previously employed at Elgin Mental Health hospital for 34 years before retiring.

She leaves behind her only sister, Sharon Simpsons; and her three loving sons, John Cothran and spouse, Julie McDonald-Miller, James (Jimbo) Cothran and spouse, Tina Cothran, and Thomas (Tom) Cothran and spouse, Isabel Cothran; and her four step-children, Charlie Adkerson, Gary Adkerson, Linda Evert, and Danny Stewart. Her three nephews, Tim Kilz, Randy Popham and John Williams. NIU Health Services lab closing soon Five employees to be affected by cost-saving measure

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University’s Health Services laboratory and its few employees will fall victim to budget cutbacks starting in mid-June, a university spokesman confirmed Friday.

The move will save the university up to $150,000 a year. In small medical practices, it is becoming common to move testing services offsite, according to NIU spokesman Joe King.

“This shouldn’t be at all noticeable to students, as far as costs go,” King said.

A letter from NIU registered nurse Judy Rosenbaum and other Health Services officials to be sent to students and parents, however, says closing the lab is not a student-centered action, in spite of the university priding itself as a student-centered school.

King said about one-third of NIU’s medical tests are already sent to off-campus labs, and that the university is looking at using Quest Diagnostics, which has had a relationship with NIU for 15 years, for its testing.

Rosenbaum said layoff notices were sent May 5, and that many state universities still have existing and functioning labs, such as Eastern, Western, Southern and Illinois State.

“This affects how physicians can do their jobs,” Rosenbaum said. “It seems like there will be no immediate lab reports, so that affects the care we can give to our students.”

King said that five lab employees will be affected and most of them will be relocated to other campus jobs.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb woman facing a fifth driving under the influence charge will be back in front of a judge Monday after police say she violated her bond by going to Chicago and letting the battery die in her electronic home monitoring bracelet.

Nichole R. Senatre, 32, of the 1100 block of North 13th Street, was at two Chicago addresses and a Cortland address Wednesday – the day she was supposed to be in court for arraignment on charges of aggravated DUI, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to report an accident, driving on a revoked license, and possession of a controlled substance, possession of a syringe or needle and theft, court records show.

She let her bracelet’s battery die Thursday and was arrested, the records show.

Police say that on March 12, Senatre caused a head-on collision on Peace Road, the third time she’d caused a crash while under the influence, and the sixth time she’d been charged with driving with a revoked license, court

Bond to be set for man facing drug, theft charge

SYCAMORE – A Kingston man charged with theft and possession of heroin will stay in jail at least until Monday, when his bond will be set.

DeKalb police said in court records that they arrested Kenneth R. McCormick, 38, of the 300 block of South Main Street, on a retail theft warrant Thursday in the 1000 block of Hillcrest Drive.

Court records show that when police arrested McCormick, he had a syringe and a spoon with a burnt bottom in a backpack. McCormick told officers he’d injected heroin earlier Thursday.

The substance on the spoon tested positive for heroin, court records show.

McCormick is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and retail theft, both punishable by one

to three years in prison.

He’s also charged with possession of a hypodermic needle or syringe.

Employees at Target, 2555 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, found two empKenneth R. ty cologne packages in McCormick a fitting room Monday, and six officers were able to identify McCormick in the surveillance video, court records show.

McCormick was convicted of theft in October in DeKalb County Court and sentenced to 18 months in prison, according to court records. He was released from prison in February, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections website.

He will be in court for a bond hearing at 11 a.m. Monday.

Global Council on Brain Health, an independent collaborative of scientists, doctors and academics, recently came out with new recommendations that cover a wide range of sleep-related issues, including common factors that can disrupt sleep, symptoms of potential sleep disorders, and prescription medications and over-the-counter sleep aids.

Here are a few of their tips on falling and staying asleep: • Don’t stay in bed if you are not sleepy. Leave the bedroom if you are in bed awake longer than you would like to be. Find a quiet place to relax outside of the bedroom and return to bed only once you feel sleepy.

• Limiting your time in bed may improve the quality of sleep. For example, if you are sleeping seven hours, you should only be in bed sevenand-a-half hours, not nine to 10 hours.

• A regular warm bath may be beneficial two to three hours before bedtime.

• Wearing socks to bed may be beneficial if you have cold feet.

• Avoid difficult discussions or arguing in the evening.

• If you worry a lot while in bed, schedule about 15 minutes each morning as your “worry time” specifically for intentional concentrating on the things you think about at night; this may make nocturnal worrying less.

• Try relaxation therapies with deep breathing and meditation, as these help some to fall and stay asleep.

• Identify your most comfortable position and sleep environment by investigating how you lie most comfortably in bed (try different positions and pillows).

• Avoid long naps; if you must nap, limit to 30 minutes in the early afternoon.

• It’s possible that you are getting more sleep than you think, but it still is worth consulting with your health-care provider if your life is being negatively impacted by lack of sleep.

Obama library won’t follow NARA model The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO – The Obama Presidential Center won’t be a part of the presidential library network operated by the National Archives and Records Administration.

The move will free the Obama Foundation from amassing an endowment equivalent to 60 percent of the construction cost, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The foundation won’t have to adhere to the agency’s architectural and design standards. And it won’t have to pay NARA to help run an agency-controlled portion of the center.

Freedom from the National Archives could save the foundation tens of millions of dollars, more than making up for the loss of federal funds.

Foundation spokeswoman Amy Brundage characterizes the arrangement with NARA as “mutually beneficial,” saying it “better reflects the way people access information in this digital age.”

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner was booed by attendees at a Chicago State University commencement ceremony.

Rauner called the reaction to his presence at Thursday’s ceremony “negative feedback,” adding he’d “love to boo our system as well.”

Chicago State has been hard hit by the failure of the governor and legislators to come up an annual budget. The two-year impasse has left the state’s public colleges and universities with little funding, resulting in layoffs.

Management troubles also have contributed to Chicago State’s woes, prompting a leadership shake-up promoted by the governor.

Rauner later said he attended the ceremony to congratulate the students and to show support for the university’s administration. He added he shares the frustration of those who booed him.

Former President Barack Obama has said construction of the center on Chicago’s South Side would take about four years.

The split wasn’t disclosed last week when Obama unveiled conceptual designs for the center. In the months leading up to the announcement, it was widely assumed the center would be a part of the presidential library network.

“It’s surprising,” said University of Louisville professor Benjamin Hufbauer, author of a book on presidential libraries. “My short take is that it’s good news. Most of (the libraries) are centers for presidential spin.

They’re propaganda centers run by the federal government. Should the government be doing that for presidents?”

The nation’s 13 major presidential libraries, including Boston’s John F. Kennedy Library and Southern California’s tribute to Ronald Reagan, get about $65 million a year from the federal government.

Rauner said the system is broken and “we’re going to make it right.”

Former Illinois prosecutor files lawsuit after acquittal

QUINCY – A former Illinois prosecutor who was acquitted two months ago in the 2006 death of his first wife has filed a federal lawsuit for damages.

Curtis Lovelace, his sons Logan and Lincoln, and his wife, Christine, on behalf of minor son Larson, filed the lawsuit Friday against several officers and officials in Adams County and the city of Quincy, the Herald-Whig reported.

The lawsuit alleges Curtis Lovelace was the subject of malicious prosecution and was deprived of his constitutional rights as well as due process in the case.

It contends that evidence was fabricated to implicate Curtis Lovelace in the Feb. 14, 2006, death of his first wife, Cory, and that evidence his attorneys said helped prove his innocence was initially withheld, including emails not provided in discovery during the first trial.

One of the emails was from prosecution witness Dr. Scott Denton, a forensic pathologist. Denton said in the email that reasonable doubt would exist in the case unless Dr. Jessica Bowman, who performed the autopsy on Cory Lovelace, amended her report

U of I OKs renovation for new medical school

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois has approved a nearly $16 million renovation for a new medical school at the Urbana-Champaign campus.

The Board of Trustees voted Thursday to spend $15.9 million to upgrade the existing Medical Sciences Building. The 32,000-square-foot facility is the future home of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Currently, the building houses a regional campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.

The new medical school is a partnership with the Urbana-based Carle Health System.

Construction is scheduled to start in November and will include renovating the

building’s anatomy laboratory, classrooms and administrative offices. The work is slated to be complete by late 2019.

Funding for the project is coming from gifts and institutional funds. The university said no state money will be used.

Trustees OK no tuition increase at Illinois State

NORMAL – Incoming Illinois State University students this fall won’t pay more to attend the school than last year’s freshman class.

ISU trustees on Friday voted to hold tuition, fees and room-and-board rates steady for the 2017-2018 academic year. That means new undergraduate, full-time students from Illinois will pay $370.25 per credit hour in tuition. The new students will pay the rate through 2021.

The board’s decision approves ISU President Larry Dietz’s recommendation not calling for a tuition increase despite the ongoing Illinois budget impasse. He has said the goal is to provide a sense of stability for prospective students and their families and rebuild their confidence in the state. Illinois has gone nearly two years without a state budget amid lawmaker disagreements in Springfield.

Trump issues warning to ousted FBI director

WASHINGTON – Raging against a political firestorm, President Donald Trump on Friday shot a sharp warning at his ousted FBI director about possible “tapes” of their disputed private conversations, raising the provocative possibility that recording devices have been installed in the White House.

Trump’s top spokesman refused to comment on whether listening devices are active in the Oval Office or elsewhere, a non-denial that recalled the secretly taped conversations and telephone calls that ultimately led to President Richard Nixon’s downfall in the Watergate scandal. Trump’s warning to fired FBI Director James Comey prompted new accusations of interference in an investigation into allegations of collaboration between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign last year.

It also escalated a potentially damaging standoff between a fuming, undisciplined president and the unorthodox lawman he dismissed three days earlier. Not to mention Congress, which has its own investigations underway.

Democrats quickly seized on the dispute, demanding the White House turn over any tapes that might exist of the president’s conversations with Comey.

Trump’s behavior raises “the specter of possible intimidation and obstruction of justice,” wrote Reps. John Conyers and Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrats on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, in a letter to White House Counsel Don McGahn. “The president’s actions also risk undermining the ongoing criminal and counterintelligence investigations and the independence of federal law enforcement agencies.”

“Well, that I can’t talk about. I won’t talk about that.

For a president whose tweets frequently rattle Washington – and foreign capitals – Trump’s message early Friday morning was particularly jarring: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” the president wrote.

The White House’s refusal to elaborate left open several questions: Was Trump, as his predecessor had in the 1970s, covertly taping conversations?

Was he trying to intimidate Comey? Was he suggesting Comey had recordings? Or was it merely a button-pushing claim launched over frustration at news coverage of the controversy?

The tweet appeared to refer to a series of three conversations in which, Trump claims, Comey assured him he was not under FBI investigation as part of the bureau’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Comey has not explicitly denied the account.

But sources close to him have cast doubt on the president’s

account, noting it would be extraordinary for an FBI director to discuss an open investigation. On Friday, a person close to the former director recounted a different version. At a one-on-one dinner at the White House in January, Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to the president and Comey declined, instead offering to be honest with him, according the person, who requested anonymity to discuss private conservations.

Spicer denied that account, insisting that the president simply “wants loyalty to this country and the rule of law.”

Details of the dinner were first reported by The New York Times.

The firing of Comey already has left Trump with the dubious distinction of being the first president since Nixon to dismiss a law enforcement official overseeing an investigation tied to the White House.

He also, like Nixon, has grown increasingly isolated in the White House, recently relying on only a small circle of family members and loyal advisers while livid about the West Wing’s failing efforts to get ahead of the damaging Russia story, according to several people close to Trump. They also commented only on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Anderson and Theriault had a four-minute phone call at 2:19 a.m., according to phone records. At 3:24 a.m., Theriault called Elgin Police Cmdr.

Colin Fleury, who supervises investigations. They talked for 10 minutes, then had two minute-long conversations not long after.

The report shows the investigation changed course after Kampmeier brought Whaley to the police station and processed him.

“Whaley refused to provide a breath sample,” Kampmeier wrote in the report. “… Based on my observations and lack of evidence, I released Whaley without charges. City of Elgin administrators were notified regarding the incident.

“Case closed.”

In a memo from Deputy Chief Jim Winters on April 12, police were asked to preserve any dashcam video of the incident, as well as video from inside the police station and other records.

Sycamore officials did not release any video to the Daily Chronicle, citing their internal investigation.

No arrest, no fee

Around noon April 8, Theriault received a text message, again apparently from Anderson, telling him Whaley had come to the police station to pay the administrative towing fee for his vehicle.

“Are we waiving?” the text asked.

“And how do we document that?”

“No arrest so no admin fee,” Theriault replied. “Just pays Accurate for tow. [Kampmeier] said he was calling Accurate to advise. Not sure if he did.”

The towing company was called and made sure they knew to waive the fee, according to a follow-up message.

The city’s ordinance regarding administrative towing, which was passed with Theriault’s backing in April 2016, says that in order to have an administrative fee waived, the vehicle’s owner must request a hearing “within 12 hours of the seizure.”

If a hearing is requested, the city is required to schedule one “within 24 hours, excluding Sundays and holidays.”

Sycamore police routinely have people’s vehicles towed and held based merely on the standard of “probable cause” to believe they were used in a crime including DUI. Vehicles are not released unless the $500 fee is paid, plus towing costs. The code does not address situations in which a vehicle is towed and a person is later released without charges.

Word about the decision to release Whaley spread through the Sycamore police ranks quickly.

City officials denied a request for any records showing complaints by members of the public, Sycamore police officers or their union about Theriault, citing their ongoing internal investigation. But on Monday, April 10, City Manager Brian Gregory notified Theriault that he was being placed on paid leave.

Early on Tuesday, April 11, Theriault sent a message to Gregory, and offered to come in for an interview.

“Still in dismay,” Theriault wrote before 8 a.m. “… Just want to offer a few thoughts, particularly as it relates to what happens after this given I am extremely confident the outcome will be exonerated.”

Gregory’s response came later that day: a more detailed letter notifying Theriault he had been placed on paid administrative leave. Theriault has been temporarily stripped of police powers and was required to turn in department-issued equipment; he is barred from city property or having contact with any city employees, according to the notice from Gregory. Gregory has declined to comment on the matter because it is a personnel issue.

The city has hired Lansing-based REM Management Services to investigate the incident, records show. The management consulting firm includes two veteran law enforcement officers who are former police chiefs.

After the first story about Theriault’s leave was published in the Daily Chronicle, Anderson sent a note to several officers.

“Continue to dot the I’s, cross the T’s while lining up the X’s versus O’s as we march ahead,” Anderson wrote on April 26. “This matter will soon pass and as the old guy in the division I have been through matters like this in the past.”

Theriault’s future with the department is yet to be determined. City officials have said the investigation is ongoing; a city council meeting scheduled for Monday includes a closed session on personnel matters, but the city has not said if Theriault will be a topic of discussion.

Sarah “Sally” Tabor Jacobson, age 78, passed away in Naples, Florida on May 2, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. She was comforted by the loving presence of Paul, her husband of 56 years, and her family.

Sally was born in Decatur, Illinois on July 29, 1938 to Purvis and Roberta Tabor and was the eldest of two daughters. She grew up in Sullivan, Illinois where she developed a love of music. Sally had a beautiful soprano voice and sang in both formal church choirs and in informal settings with friends and family. She also was an accomplished pianist and played throughout her life. After graduating from Chatham Hall in 1956, Sally attended the University of Michigan where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. During her freshman year at Michigan she met Paul Jacobson, who she wed shortly

(Philip) Martin.

Sally will be remembered as a loving, caring and sensitive wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 3 at United Church of Christ, 5200 Crayton Road in Naples, Florida. A luncheon reception will be held at the church fellowship hall immediately after the service.

Sally and Paul moved to DeKalb, Illinois where they lived for the next 20 years and lovingly raised three children. Sally was an active participant in the First Lutheran Church choir, various school bodies and many of her children’s activities including Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1980, Sally and Paul moved to Naples, Florida where she lived for the next 37 years spending time in Naples and at their summer home in Linville Ridge, North Carolina. She was a very committed and active member in Alcoholics Anonymous in Naples and Boone, North Carolina, and developed a huge number of friendships and mentored and supported countless people to help them achieve the peace, serenity and sobriety she found through AA. Sally nurtured her commitment to the arts and music in a number of ways. During the 1980s and early1990s, she served as a Board Member of the Naples Philharmonic. She also served for 16 years as an Advisory Board member of Appalachian State University’s School of Music.

Thumbs-up: To the community members honored at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s fourth annual Community Awards Dinner on Thursday. During the program at Faranda’s in DeKalb, Sycamore High School student Libby Swedberg was recognized with the Youth Award for her participation in various service-oriented activities. Jim Lehan of Lehan Drugs was recognized with the Emerging Leader Award, and the Outstanding Community Leader Award went to Keith Foster of the Foster and Buick Law Group.

Congratulations to the Y for taking initiative to recognize people working to make a difference, bringing inspiring speakers such as Robert Watts to DeKalb and continuing to remind us that the local YMCA is “more than just a gym.”

Thumbs-down: To layoffs at Northern Illinois University. Though it seemed inevitable given the declining enrollment and the state budget crisis that has led to multimillion-dollar funding reductions for public universities around Illinois, we are troubled to see people losing their jobs at our county’s largest employer. It’s fair to ask why administrators earning six-figure salaries are not being affected, or whether the institution has spent its money wisely in recent years. The cuts will lead to 150 position eliminations at NIU, including about 30 active employees, NIU President Doug Baker said this week.

Thumbs-down: To a false alarm at Sycamore High School. On Thursday, the blue point alarm system, designed to alert police to emergencies that are not fire-related at the school, was activated. Police officials say it appears to have been a malfunction, which was disruptive to the school day and sent some students running from the building in multiple directions. Others barricaded themselves inside the school.

It certainly was disruptive to the school day and clearly alarmed many students, teachers and parents. We hope that the response inside the school will be evaluated and any issues that arose can be addressed in the future – though, of course, we hope the only time this system is used is for a drill or a malfunction.

Thumbs-up: To a local woman for breaking a world record – hopefully. Guinness World Records is still approving the event. Ali Alsup of Genoa was one of 48 women to team up and break the record for most ballet water-skiers pulled by a single boat last month on Lake Ariana in Auburndale, Florida. The previous number was 40. “It felt so surreal to break a record on first try, to ski with the best of the best,” she said. We congratulate Ali on her achievement.

Dems offer no fix for Affordable Care Act After fits and starts, the U.S. House of Representatives has advanced legislation substantially altering and rolling back the Affordable Care Act. Democrats wail that widespread devastation awaits. Yet Democrats ignore the fact that Obamacare is collapsing and lives are going to be disrupted no matter what.

Insurers are already announcing huge rate increases or warning of withdrawal from Obamacare exchanges. Recent regulatory filings in Virginia and Maryland revealed several insurers are seeking major increases for 2018 Affordable Care Act exchange plans.

Anthem Inc. is seeking an average premium increase of 37.7 percent in Virginia. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield filed for a 52 percent increase in Maryland and a 35 percent increase in Virginia.

Cigna Corp. is requesting a 44.7 percent increase for Virginia exchange plans, and 37 percent in Maryland. And officials at Cigna and Anthem both indicate they still may pull out of the Virginia exchanges altogether.

Virginia and Maryland have earlier filing deadlines than many states and highlight the dramatic premium increases likely to come nationwide.

Officials with the insurer Medica have announced they may withdraw from Iowa’s exchange next year. Aetna plans to leave Virginia’s exchange in 2018. In February, Humana announced it is withdrawing from all state exchanges.

Medica’s announcement could mean Iowa natives will have no insurance providers in that state’s exchange after Aetna and Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield both announced their exits earlier this year.

Oklahoma is among the states with a shaky

Obamacare exchange, as noted by U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Cheyenne, in a release touting his support for the House repeal measure.

“Several states, including Oklahoma, are down to only one insurance provider on their state exchange and health premiums continue to rise at a staggering rate,” Lucas said.

Even when people can find and afford Obamacare coverage offered through a state exchange, the ACA’s many mandates have forced insurers to dramatically restrict provider networks and impose large deductibles to control costs. The result is that even when people get coverage they still can struggle to pay for health care or access the best doctors.

In addition to exchanges, the ACA also increased coverage by adding millions to Medicaid, the state-federal welfare program. But Medicaid pays providers well below market rates. As a result, the best doctors don’t take Medicaid patients or at least limit those numbers.

And several states that expanded Medicaid have since struggled with paying the state share of dramatically rising costs associated with the program.

For several years, Democrats decried ACA opponents who did not offer an alternative plan.

Now House Republicans have advanced one and the script has been flipped.

It’s now incumbent on Democrats to explain how they would overhaul and reform Obamacare in a fiscally prudent fashion, because those who refuse to support reform are turning a blind eye to the chaos and hardship that is already underway and growing by the day.

The House repealed Obamacare!

OK, it didn’t really – but it passed a bill that repeals some bad parts of it, like the individual mandate tax, medicine cabinet tax, flexible spending account tax and health savings account withdrawal tax. Good.

Now the Senate will create its own bill and ask the Congressional Budget Office if the House bill will save money.

But Obamacare was so bad, I fear these changes are just Band-Aids on a collapsing system. Instead, the Senate should pass my seven-point plan:

1. Repeal Obamacare, all of it.

With premiums soaring and insurers pulling out of Obamacare, let’s start from scratch with something better.

At a question-and-answer session on April 18, Congressman Randy Hultgren, who voted for the AHCA, recommended everyone write letters. It was better than phone calls or emails.

I wrote Hultgren, and my daughter, her mother and I met him on May 9. We talked about Medicaid, long-term care and the terrible consequences of the AHCA for people with disabilities. He was very nice, and expressed that people with disabilities were his priority.

Please write your representative and ask him or her to be certain that every, final AHCA provision does no harm. In our case I am sure that Congressman Hultgren will make certain that the final AHCA bill retains Medicaid funds at the “current level,” both now and for the foreseeable future.

To the Editor: The American Health Care Act (AHCA), or repeal of Obamacare, recently passed the House of Representatives. Many people have complained loudly about this bill. A major concern is that it very negatively impacts people with pre-existing conditions.

The silent and nearly ignored victims of this bill are people with disabilities and frail older adults.

Someone is probably asking what do people with disabilities and older adults have to do with Obamacare? The AHCA reduces the funds for long-term care for these groups by at least $40 billion a year! Medicaid pays for these services, and this help has nothing to do with Obamacare.

Yet the current AHCA says “cut their care.” For older adults, the reduction primarily affects nursing home resi-

dents. Medicaid is a major payer.

For people with disabilities, this loss of billions of dollars per year is particularly devastating. Medicaid also pays for their long-term care services and this help is expensive.

People with disabilities have been emerging from the shadows and joining us in our communities. They bag groceries at Jewel, greet you at another store, or celebrate their Special Olympics victories. A reduction of $40 billion imperils these gains.

I am the father of a young person with disabilities. My child has thrived because of current services. She is now employed, is in dance and lives in her own home with two roommates.

The move was wonderful for mom and dad, too. Entering our 70s, we can’t care for our daughter forever, and we had to find a place where her many physical needs could be met for the remainder of her life. A dream had come true, but the

To the Editor: Easy to see why people are not moving to the city of DeKalb.

The DeKalb City Council insists on throwing tax dollars away, just creating more problems. They gave away $3 million for a project without specifying that that Cornerstone development be built a safe distance from the edge of First Street.

Their solution is to spend $34,480 in the short term, and $67,500 later, to study narrowing the street where 50 more apartments are going to be built.

Of course, there will be more cost to do the actual work. Brilliant. Just build the development a safe distance from the existing road.

GENOA – Rounding into the final straightaway of the 800-meter run, Sycamore sophomore Hannah Kirby was in second place and had one thought.

“I had it in my mind that I can’t let Sycamore down,” Kirby said. “I need to make it to state.”

Kirby punched her ticket as the only member of the Spartans girls track team to qualify for the Class 2A Track and Field State Championship by holding off Kaneland’s Becca Richtman for second place at the Class 2A Genoa-Kingston Sectional on Friday night.

“Hannah knew coming into this we had a lot of outside shots, but we had two legitimate chances (at state bids) and she was one of them,” said Sycamore coach Joe McCormick, whose Spartans finished in 13th place in the 16-team sectional. “She understood that pressure. This race meant a lot to her. She wanted to represent the great city of Sycamore and this program. She ran one (heck) of a race.”

Kaneland, which was a co-state champion last year in Class 2A, won the sectional with 97 points – with Rockford Boylan Catholic (88) in second and Sterling (87) in third. The Knights qualified for the state meet in nine events, including the 400-meter, 800-meter and 3,200-meter relays. Individually, Maddie Keifer (triple jump), Cierra Kuipers (pole vault), Nicole Sreenan (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash), Lesley Viveros (400-meter dash) and Rachel Richtman (1,600-meter run) all will be going to Charleston for the state meet.

Kramer, who came into the meet with a seed time of 49.44 in the 300-meter hurdles, was the only Cog to qualify for state by taking third with a time of 46.89 – under the required time of 47.72. “(State) didn’t really come into my mind, I just wanted to PR tonight,” Kramer said. “I ended up PRing by four seconds, which is a really good thing.

It feels good because I get to represent my school.”

The Cogs were 14th overall as a team with 10.5 points.

In the 800, Kirby burst out to a quick lead before Geneseo’s Josie Brown caught up to her and built a cushion before the end of the first lap. Kirby held a decent lead over Kaneland’s Richtman in the second lap, but the Sycamore sophomore said she knew she had to hang on through the finish.

“My mind was going crazy,” Kirby said. “I was thinking, ‘I just need to get second.’ I knew if I didn’t hit (automatic qualifying) time, I’d have to place.”

Kirby, who qualified for the sectional meet during cross country season in the fall, faded late in the 800 last week in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet, finishing in fifth place with a time of 2:25.59 – while Richtman took third at 2:24.62. On Friday, Kirby ended with a time of 2:23.24 and Richtman crossed in 2:25.01.

“Kaneland was creeping up in the last stretch and she just said, ‘Nope.

This is my race,’ ” McCormick said.

“I am so proud of her. She worked so hard. She ran so much mileage last summer.”

For the Knights, it’s their fifth straight sectional title, and Kuipers earned her first trip to the state meet in

the advice we gave them at the coaching opportunities. They just would not give up and they refused to lose.”

Kaneland sets 2 records; DeKalb 5th

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Kaneland set a pair of conference records on its way to a fourth-place finish at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet Friday.

Kaneland junior hurler Clayton Hannula set a conference record in the shot put with a distance of 58 feet, 4 inches, over five feet longer than any other thrower.

“I’m pretty pumped. Sectionals is next week and I have a big mark out there,” Hannula said. “It feels pretty good. I’ve been working for this for a while.”

Kaneland pole vaulter Danny Walker took home first place and the conference record with a height of 15-3, almost a foot higher than the field.

“We wanted to be consistent and concise about everything that we do,” Walker said.

DeKalb came in right behind Kaneland in fifth place despite missing top sprinter Tristan Bujarski, who was nursing a hamstring injury. In his place, Keonte McKinnie took home third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.13 seconds.

“I felt like my start was really good.

I knew what I had to get there. I had to really push. I tried my best,” McKinnie said.

Brian Ross took home first for the Barbs in the high jump at 6-4.

“As I was running up there, I’m seeing my self clear the bar and land in the pit with the bar still there,” Ross said.

Huskies sweep, reach final day of MAC tourney DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Northern Illinois softball won a pair of games Friday to advance to the final day of the MAC Tournament on Saturday in Akron, Ohio.

The Huskies started the day with a 3-0 win against No. 1 seed Central Michigan, then scored 12 runs in the final two innings for a 15-9 win against Western Michigan.

The Huskies will play Kent State on Saturday, with the winner facing Ohio in the championship, needing to beat them twice for the title. The Bobcats beat the Huskies, 1-0, earlier in the tourney, sending NIU into the consolation bracket.

Kali Kossakowski hit a grand slam to tie the game at 8 in the sixth against Western Michigan. Alaynie Woollard homered to start the frame, which the Huskies entered trailing by five.

Jenny Van Geertry hit a double in

the seventh that scored two, giving the Huskies a 10-8 lead.

In the first game of the day, the Huskies knocked out top-seed Central Michigan with a 3-0 victory.

Keegan Hayes picked up the win, throwing five scoreless innings, and Tara Thacker came in for the save, pitching two perfect innings. Offensively, Kayti Grable went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Dominique Greeno and Van Geertry each went 1 for 3 with a

The Bears would like us to believe they do not have a quarterback controversy, just a lot of nice options at the position.

I would like to believe the same but ... .

Before I go there, since I have not written on the subject since the Bears made Mitch (it just feels and sounds better than Mitchell and I hope he’s not offended) Trubisky the second overall pick in the draft, here are my thoughts.

I have no problem with the Bears drafting a quarterback, Trubisky, in the first round after signing Mike Glennon in free agency.

The Bears have sucked at quarterback for too long and now have the best competition at the position they’ve had in most of our lifetimes. If they have two good quarterbacks, that’s a great problem.

If Mike Glennon’s feelings are hurt, tough.

The fact is – we think – the job is his until he’s not good enough to keep it, and if Trubisky looking over his shoulder scares him what are J.J. Watt, Von Miller or Aaron Donald going to do to him?

Heyward, Russell taking it slow with injuries

bmiles@dailyherald.com ST. LOUIS – A pair of Cubs tested out injuries Friday at Busch Stadium.

Outfielder Jason Heyward, who is on the 10-day disabled list, took some “dry swings” to get a handle on a finger sprain on his right hand.

Shortstop Addison Russell, who is still on the active list, did some throwing to test a sore right shoulder that has been bothering him for a few days.

Heyward is eligible to come off the DL on Tuesday.

“I would say it’s more localized now,” said Heyward, who injured himself diving for a ball on the last homestand. “It’s in the knuckle. Before, it was running through the whole ligament. Slowly but surely, I just keep coming back with, ‘See how it is day-today, and see how this (swinging) treats me.’ ” Russell last played in Tuesday’s doubleheader at Colorado.

“It’s feeling a lot better,” he said.

“Go out with the team today and play some catch. It’s my first day in two or three days. We’ll see how it feels.

During treatment, it feels fine. Go out there and test it a little a little bit. I talked to (manager Joe Maddon). Today was a day I really wanted to play, but I think we both feel that it’s better if we just take this slow. It’s still early

Garcia hits two homers, but Sox lose to Padres

CHICAGO – Todd Frazier believes the White Sox have one of the most powerful lineups in baseball.

“Strength-wise, we’re right there,” Frazier said. “I’d say we’re one of the tops in the league. I think if you put us in a home run derby with somebody, we’ve got a good shot.”

Derby muscles have not translated into a potent offense for the Sox. The team entered Friday tied for last in the American League in home runs despite a group that includes Frazier, Jose Abreu, Avisail Garcia, Melky Cabrera and Matt Davidson.

On Friday, the Sox received power from an unlikely source. Leadoff hitter Leury Garcia hit two home runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Padres pulled away for a 6-3 win.

The Sox (15-18) have lost six games in a row and nine of 11. A surprisingly good start has given way to an ugly slump on the South Side, where a rebuilding project could take years.

“It’s a tough moment, but we knew that we were going to hit some bumps in the road,” Abreu said through an interpreter. “This is probably the first one.”

In the short term, can the Sox rediscover the long ball?

“I’m not too concerned about it,” manager Rick Renteria said. “It’s still a long season. I think if you’re looking for extra homers, if you’re looking for the 35 or 40-plus homers per season (for a player), I think it’s doable but probably not probable. But I still think our home run numbers will still come.”

So far, the numbers have been lacking.

Garcia’s blasts gave the Sox 32 home runs in 33 games. The only team in the

AL with fewer home runs is the Red Sox (30). The league average is more than 40, and four teams in the majors have topped 50.

Other aspects of the Sox offense also have lulled. The team entered Friday ranked No. 22 in the big leagues in batting average (.236), No. 26 in on-base percentage (.298) and No. 26 in slugging percentage (.371).

Davidson said it was too soon to declare a power outage.

“It’s been early, it’s been cold, and we really haven’t clicked as an offense all together consistently yet,” Davidson said. “We’ve been in ballgames pretty much all the time, we’re playing .500, so that’s a good sign for us. When it gets clicking all together, we could be pretty scary.

“You’ve got a lot of veteran guys here, guys with a lot of experience.

They know what they need to do for

their swing. For the guys playing every day, they’re 100 bats in. They still have 500 more to go.”

Frazier hit 40 home runs last season and has hit at least 29 home runs in each of the past three seasons. This year, he has three home runs and is on pace to finish with 14.

Patience is important for unlocking power, Frazier said. The more that a hitter tries to force a home run, the harder it is for him to hit one.

“I think you just have to let that come in the right situations,” Frazier said. “The power comes when you’re hitting the pitch you want and not missing.

“You’re going to miss a lot of them and you’re going to hit a lot of them.

Right now, I’d say (we have) more misses than usual, but they always have a way of evening out when you’re at the plate.”

WASHINGTON – John Wall hit a 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left for the go-ahead basket, then hopped atop the scorer’s table and yelled to celebrate at the conclusion of the Washington Wizards’ 92-91 victory over the Boston Celtics on Friday night that pushed their Eastern Conference semifinal to a Game 7.

Wall overcame a 1-for-12 start to finish with 26 points, and Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 33. The backcourt mates combined for 23 of Washington’s 26 points in the back-and-forth fourth quarter.

Isaiah Thomas and the Celtics showed up dressed in black, but couldn’t back up the fashion statement, blowing an 87-82 lead over the last two minutes. Thomas’ heave at the buzzer clanked off the rim. He and Avery Bradley each had 27 points.

Game 7 is at Boston on Monday night. The winner will face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East finals starting Wednesday.

The host has won all 10 games between the Wizards and Celtics this season – four in the regular season and six in the playoffs.

Boston, which won Game 5 at home by 22 points, led Game 6 by 69-66 entering the fourth quarter, when a relatively blah game became much more compelling. The final period was tight throughout, featuring six ties and nine lead changes.

After Bradley and Beal traded shots to even it at 89, the Celtics had the ball and, coming out of a timeout with 14.1 seconds remaining, Al Horford made a 16-foot bank shot for the lead. After another timeout, Wall made the 3 that would decide the outcome. When the buzzer sounded, he ran to a corner of the court, then made his way to the sideline, jumped up and yelled and popped his jersey.

The Celtics got off to a terrible start, going 4 for 17 in the first quarter and not making a field goal over the final 5½ minutes or so. But Washington could not take full advantage, leading only 22-17 after that period.

Kruger hopes to remain with the Hawks, but if he has played his last game with them, so be it. He’s already banked a lot of championship memories, and has the rings to prove it.

“If that happens, I’ll deal with it then, but obviously winning two Cups is special,” Kruger said. “Playing my first game in the NHL with the Blackhawks (in 2011) was also special, but that’s nothing that I’m thinking about right now. Now, I’m here, and we’ll see whatever happens in the summer.”

In the meantime, Kruger is intent on helping Sweden earn a medal.

The Swedes opened preliminary action with a 1-2 record, losing to Russia and the U.S., and now need to string some wins together to earn a spot in next week’s quarterfinals.

A run to a medal or championship wouldn’t entirely erase the bitter taste of being swept by Nashville, in what might’ve been Kruger’s final playoff series with the Hawks, but it would help.

COLOGNE, Germany – The question is something Marcus Kruger doesn’t want to think about yet, with the sting of the Blackhawks being swept out of the playoffs still fresh in his mind.

In fact, Kruger came to the 2017 IIHF World Championship to play for Sweden and not think about what happened or what it might mean in grand scheme of his NHL career.

“It felt like it was way too short there in Chicago this season,” said Kruger, who is centering Sweden’s second line during preliminary-round play. “This was just a chance to play some more hockey, because that’s what we all love to do. It wasn’t really hard to decide to come here when they asked.”

The hard part is what might happen this summer, when Kruger and his $3.08 million salary-cap hit might be the next to go in the Hawks’ annual AP photo cap-related payroll purge.

Some researchers believe when a child is exposed to certain pet-associated microbes, the result is a beneficial effect on the development of his or her immune system. The theory is the presence of animals adds a level of diversity to the microbes the child encounters daily. The result is an immune system that’s measurably less trigger-happy in the presence of potential allergens.

However, this exposure appears to be at its most effective before birth and during the first 12 or so months of life.

What’s also interesting is stool samples taken from children who grew up on a farm, and therefore came into regular contact with a variety of animals, had a broader diversity of microbiota than did samples from children living without pets.

And it’s not only contact with the animals themselves scientists believe has benefits. The microscopic traces of soil that cling to the animals and get transferred to people, or that the animals bring into the home, contribute to an environment with a more robust and diverse array of useful microbes.

With research into the mysterious and fascinating microbiome still in its infancy, we only can imagine the revelations to come.

Dear Doctors: Neither of my sisters have pets, and all their kids have allergies. Could the fact we have dogs, a horse and a barn cat be the reason my kids aren’t allergic to anything?

Dear Reader: How and why allergies develop are complex questions that have long been the subject of study. So many variables are at play, both genetic and environmental, that it’s difficult to pinpoint why someone does develop an allergy and someone else does not.

That said, an emerging body of evidence suggests early exposure to pets may indeed offer a measure of protection from developing an allergy. It’s tied into what we’re now learning about the importance of the gut microbiome, which is the array of microbes and microorganisms that coexist within our bodies. This insight offers new avenues of research and understanding that are both fascinating and intriguing.

Let’s back up and talk about what, exactly, an allergy is.

An allergy develops when the immune system perceives a normally harmless substance as a threat and then mounts a vigorous defense against that substance.

Dust mites, pollen, certain foods and pet dander are among the substances the immune system suddenly may begin to target. The result of this hypersensitivity can manifest as itchiness, swelling, hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, stomach upset and vomiting. Most allergies are manageable and merely are unpleasant or annoying. However, some allergic reactions can be so extreme they are life-threatening.

The original idea behind the petsare-good theory of allergy protection was, through early exposure, individuals became desensitized to the presence of potential allergens. New research now suggests

Dear Abby: Recently, at a local doughnut shop, I created what I’m afraid was an awkward social situation as I was placing my order.

Three military servicemen in uniform came in and stood in line behind me. As the cashier rang me up, after a few moments of mulling it over, I told them I was thankful for their service and politely asked, “May I please buy your coffee for you?”

I was shocked when one of them responded, “I’d rather you didn’t. We make pretty good money, you know.” He then proceeded to say he always tries to “avoid situations like this” because “a lot of service people take advantage of civilians who offer them things for free.”

The other two seemed to share his sentiments, but agreed to let me pay. Each one shook my hand and thanked me before leaving, but I could see I had made them uncomfortable.

I truly am thankful for the services of those in uniform and never intended to offend them in any way. Next time, should I donate to a military support charity instead?

It is always encouraging to hear about a promising young player. This deal features 12-year-old Ediz Akay, whose father Sadik is a well-known expert in Turkey.

You can work out where Akay was sitting because the young know no fear. Not only did he bid his fivecard suit twice, but he doubled four spades with no guarantee it could be defeated.

As soon as the bidding ended, Akay said, “So far, nobody has ever managed to make a contract that I doubled.”

“How long have you been playing bridge?” asked an opponent.

“Two months.”

Ozlem Senturk, a university student, understandably led her singleton diamond. South won in the dummy and led a low heart, but East accurately took the trick with the ace and shifted to his singleton club.

Declarer won with his ace, cashed the heart king, ruffed a heart with the spade queen and tried to cash the club king. But East ruffed, gave his partner a diamond ruff, trumped another club with the spade ace and led a card. West had to take two more trump tricks for down three. North paid a heavy price for his unjustified raise to game.

“I told you so,” mumbled East.

The original reporter claimed that South could have escaped for down one by leading the spade queen from the board at trick two. That would not have been right if Akay had taken the trick and shifted to any heart but the ace! If he had found that play for down two, he would have won the defense of the year award.

The 5-acre property is Daily Chronicle Classified 877-264-2527 zoned A-1, Agricultural District, and the house was a pre-existing, legal, non-conforming use. The Zoning Ordinance allows that a Building Permit to repair the damage to a legal, non-conforming house may be granted, provided an application is made within 180 days of the date of the damage. The damage occurred on January 21, 2015, however, no such application was submitted within the 180-day time period. In order to repair the house on the property, a Variation must be granted from the 180-day requirement. Before a Variation can be granted, a public hearing must be held by the DeKalb County Hearing Officer.
