POLL This way of life can’t last forever YESTERDAY’S I was in my daughter’s elementary school class in Sycamore School District 427 this week, watching as she and her classmates read stories they’d written about a person or animal they’d like to switch places with.

Some of the boys wanted to be soccer players from foreign countries or NBA stars, but nobody wanted to be a Cubs player (in the ‘80s, I’d have wanted to be Ryne Sandberg).

Girls said they’d like to be their mothers, or their brother or sister.

One boy said he wanted to be his dad, a law enforcement officer who’s clearly his son’s hero.

My daughter’s not a big newspaper reader. She said she wanted to be an orangutan.

It is good sometimes to see school through children’s eyes. They don’t worry about the adult issues of how to actually run the schools. Their world is their desk, their locker, their friends at the lunch table.

My entire time there, I didn’t think once about the $7,600 property tax bill I’d received the weekend before, or how more than $4,000 of it goes to support those schools.

I didn’t think about the more than $60 billion in unfunded pension liability that the Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System faces, or how Illinois will have to continue to increase the more than $20 billion it’s spending on public pensions.

Or how this pension debt is only growing because the state’s governor and legislators can’t agree on a budget.

Illinoisans care about schools quite a lot.

People in our state, and in its individual communities, spend a lot of money supporting them.

homes and properties much more expensive, but the people who accept that do so because we as a state value education and educators. (A lot of people are saying it’s insane and moving away, too.)

I’m concerned, however, that the next generation of children might not be able to attend a public school like the ones we have today.

How much longer will Illinois be able to offer public education as it does, with a pension system that can’t pay for half the benefits it’s promised to the retired or the soon-to-be retired?

How much longer will property owners be willing to pay thousands of dollars a year in property taxes to support a system that demands more each year?

I’m worried that generous pension promises and union contracts that guarantee raises and salary spikes in the years before retirement will make our public school system – and our state – unsustainable in the long term.

I hope I am wrong. I like the education my children are receiving, and value it.

But the adult problems behind the system have to be addressed, and soon, and I’ve seen few indications that is happening at the state or local level in Illinois.

None of the orangutans I’ve seen at the zoo ever seem troubled by things like this.

Maybe my daughter’s on to something.

SYCAMORE – Local police officers who have died in the line of duty will be remembered during a memorial service Monday in Sycamore.

The DeKalb County Law Enforcement Officers

Memorial Service will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday on the front lawn of the DeKalb County Courthouse, 133 W. State St. In Illinois, four officers died in the line of duty in 2016, according to a Sycamore Police Department news release.

Sycamore woman found guilty of attempted murder

SYCAMORE – It took a jury about an hour Thursday to find Nicholle Martinez guilty of attempted murder after she attacked her husband’s girlfriend in a DeKalb parking lot in September 2014.

Members of her family and her church cried, but Martinez, 44, of the 1800 block of Kerrybrook Court, Sycamore, remained generally composed as the verdict was read. Her $50,000 bond, posted by her husband, Luis, in May 2015 was revoked. As she was taken into custody, she heard a young woman’s tearful well wish of “Nicholle, we love you.”

Martinez, a mother of five, will be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. June 22. She could face six to 30 years in prison.

In her closing argument, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan went over the way Martinez prepared for and carried out the attack on Elena Mora Garcia outside Mora’s apartment in the 1300 block of Sycamore Road.

She told the jury that when Martinez slashed Mora’s neck below both her ears, her intent was clear.

“This is not the attack of someone who is flailing wildly,” Caplan said.

“This is a precise attack to some of the most vulnerable areas a person can have.”

Intent is what’s at issue, Martinez’s lawyer, Loren Blumenfeld, told the jury.

“I don’t know what she’s thinking,” he said, describing the circumstances at the time of the attack, to which Martinez confessed in a video interview with a DeKalb police detective. “I don’t think she knows what she’s thinking.”

First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein referred to Martinez’s interview with Detective Mark Nachman.

“I flat-out wanted to kill her,” Martinez said on the recording, which was played in court Wednesday, the second day of the trial.

In the video, Martinez told Nachman about the endless trail of texts and emails between Mora and her husband, who was, and still is, Mora’s supervisor at the Taco Bell restaurant in Sycamore. Martinez told the

“He’s a real ass,” she said in the video.

On Tuesday, Mora took the stand and described how Martinez bashed her head with a rock as she was getting out of her car, and how she initially thought she was being attacked by a man. She said she first recognized Martinez when she heard her voice.

“She said, ‘Oh, you don’t want to die?’ ” Mora testified through an interpreter, “and she continued to attack me. I kept thinking of my girls, who would be alone.”

Mora’s daughter, Anayeli Victoria, and Victoria’s boyfriend, J. Magandy Montero, testified that Victoria was unable to pull Martinez off Mora, so Montero kicked Martinez, punched her and put her in a headlock, at which point her mask came off. Montero said he recognized her and asked why she did it.

“She told me I already know why she did it,” Montero said.

In the video interview with Nachman, Martinez said it was a good thing Montero pulled her off Mora.

She said it was fortuitous that the scalpel she’d brought fell out of her pocket and into the car during the struggle.

“That was a good thing,” she said.

“The box cutter didn’t cut as well, so if I would have gotten the knife open, that would have sliced her throat because it’s a scalpel.”

Martinez took the stand Wednesday and said she never wanted Mora to be dead – that she still doesn’t want her dead. She just wanted her family back, she said.

Prosecutors pointed out that her words in court were far different from what she said after the attack.

“Why do people lie, and how do people lie?” Klein asked the jury during her closing argument. “They don’t typically lie to get themselves into trouble.

“Now she expects you to believe, two and a half years later, that she didn’t want Elena dead. She wanted Elena dead. She flat-out wanted Elena dead.”

SYCAMORE – The blood and glass pressed to their classmates’ faces might have been fake, but the car crash staged Thursday morning behind Sycamore High School showed students just how real consequences of their decisions on prom night can be.

“If you affect one person and they make the conscious decision not to make a bad decision, then we’ve done our job,” said junior Rosemary Nelson, one of the actors.

Juniors and seniors gathered to witness the mock crash. They heard sounds of tires screeching, metal crashing and their peers crying out for help before a school bus drove off to reveal the crash.

Police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances soon arrived to the scene, where a pickup truck had crashed into the side of a minivan. Both vehicles were packed with students on their way home from prom.

The truck driver had been drinking. He walked away from the crash with minimal injuries and later was escorted to a squad car in handcuffs.

Other passengers weren’t so lucky.

Paramedics had to saw off doors to reach them.

Some were carried away on stretchers to get medical assistance.

One had crashed through the windshield and lay on the hood of the truck before being pronounced dead at the scene.

“James was the one who drank in this scenario, and he was perfectly fine,” Nelson said. “He got arrested.

Somebody else lost their life because of it, and I think that’s what it comes down to, right? You make a decision that affects everybody else, and it’s not your right to do that to other people.”

Junior Stephen Poorten said he hopes his classmates will remember to stay safe when they head out to prom Saturday.

“If you’re gonna drink, don’t drive,” he said.

Sycamore firefighter and EMT Brian Thompson said the idea behind “Operation Prom” is to show students what can happen when they drive while distracted or intoxicated, and to empower them to make the right choices.

“We don’t want to scare them, because kids don’t scare,” he said.

Thompson said the mock crash

is conducted every other year at the high school, and students next year will watch the video from this year.

6 Sycamore school evacuated after alarm malfunction

SYCAMORE – A mechanical malfunction of Sycamore High School’s BluePoint alarm system is thought to be the cause of a full evacuation of the school Thursday afternoon.

Sycamore police responded about 1 p.m. after the alarm had been activated. Cmdr. Steve Cook said everything is consistent with there being a problem with the alarm, which helps alert police to emergencies that are not fire-related. Students and staff returned to the building about 1:45 p.m. A school official said the BluePoint system has been used at the school for about two years. DeKALB – The state’s tourism director spoke Thursday at the Egyptian Theatre about how his office has managed to do more with less.

Despite little funding from the state to market its various tourism destinations, Illinois welcomed 110 million domestic visitors in 2016, 1 million more than the previous year, Cory Jobe said.

Because of the increase, domestic travelers spent $35.1 billion in 2016, a 1.8 percent increase from 2015. That growth helped support an additional 9,600 jobs in Illinois in 2016, Jobe said.

“Tourism is big business,” Jobe said.

“For every dollar we spend, it continues to generate over $9 in economic return.”

Jobe was wrapping up a series of presentations across the state as part of National Travel and Tourism Week, which recognizes the positive effects of tourism on the state and will conclude Saturday.

“Tourism is an industry that continues to grow and evolve, and it continues to be an economic engine for the state, and I want to thank everyone for driving economic tourism in the state,” Jobe said.

He also complimented the Enjoy Illinois website for making leaps and bounds in promoting Illinois tourism. In addition to statistics, Jobe highlighted the Illinois Made program, which features various artisans and small-business owners in the state who help to drive tourism.

In 2016, less than $4 million was spent on marketing Illinois tourism, Jobe said, yet $15 million is projected to be spent in 13 Midwest markets and six international markets this year.

“The hope is for Illinois Made to get more of the state involved in marketing efforts,” Jobe said. “Illinois is a big state with a lot of great product, but it’s hard to capture all of that great product in a 30- to 60-second video.”

DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith said a possible opportunity to promote local tourism is collaboration between small businesses – for instance, Waterman Winery and Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. hosting some type of countywide sampling.

Jobe said the goal is to keep visitors in the state as long as possible, and craft spirits often are a strong passion point of travel.

“That’s an idea I think we can perhaps collaboratively put together,” Smith said.

DeKalb man charged in connection with store robbery, car burglaries DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A DeKalb man charged in connection with the April 27 armed robbery of Huskies Discount Tobacco as well as two other crimes in the area is in jail on $100,000 bond.

According to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department, police on Wednesday lured Andrew J. Monroe, 24, of the 800 block of Kimberly Andrew J. Drive, to the 1300 block of Monroe West Lincoln Highway, where he was arrested on an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant.

During their investigation, police said they found a paintball gun and bandana Monroe used in the daytime holdup at the store at 1023 W. Hillcrest Drive, the release said. He took money from the register and a victim’s wal-

let, court records show, and he is being charged with aggravated robbery.

Because he violated his parole, if he’s convicted, he could face six to 30 years in prison.

Monroe also was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property in connection with April 25 vehicle burglaries, according to the release. Monroe told police he damaged a car and a van in the 1100 block of Normal Road with a rock and stole change from the van, court records show.

Cmdr. Bob Redel said police are investigating whether Monroe is connected with other burglaries in the area.

Monroe is on parole for possession of a controlled substance and was convicted in 2010 for an attempted armed robbery in Cook County, according to the release.

When Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert asked whether he would be able to post $10,000 to be released, he laughed.

“No, ma’am,” he said.

Recovering heroin addict recalls son’s overdose

The Quincy Herald-Whig CARTHAGE – Naperville native Tim Ryan has experienced the worst sides of the opioid epidemic.

A heroin addict, Ryan spent 14 months in prison. Six months after his release, his son, Nick, 20, died of a heroin overdose.

“When my son died, every Facebook message and text was drug-related,” he said. “Parents don’t know what they don’t know.”

Ryan shared his story on an April night during the Opioid Crisis Next Door, a substance abuse awareness presentation at Carthage’s Legacy Theater. Naperville police Detective Rich Wistocki also spoke on cellphone monitoring and cybercrimes.

“It’s empowering parents to let them know what’s going on with technology,” Ryan said. “A mother’s intuition is right.

If they think something is going on, something is going on.”

Ryan has been sober for 4½ years.

He is the founder of A Man in Recovery Foundation and chief marketing officer for Banyan Treatment Centers; has been featured in national publications and on TV shows; and recently published a memoir, “From Dope to Hope: A Man in Recovery.”

Ryan had simple advice.

“Quit being friends with your kids. Be parents,” he said. “With my son, I wasn’t his parent. I was his friend, and he’s dead now.”

Ryan was accompanied by his son Max, 19, who also spoke on growing up with a drug-addicted father and losing his brother. The Opioid Crisis Next Door was coordinated by the Hancock County Opioid Task Force, a partnership of health and law enforcement professionals.

“The task force has two prongs,” Memorial Hospital CEO Ada Bair said. “One

is education and prevention. The other piece centers around what else we need to do for treatment and recovery.”

Bair hopes the task force is getting a jump on the heroin problem in Hancock County before it becomes critical. No one younger than 18 has died of an opioid overdose in Hancock County, but she fears it might already be out of control.

“Our eyes were opened through our kids today,” Bair said. “Tim and his son did a program for the schools. Tim asked the kids to raise their hands if they knew somebody who used alcohol. He went down the tier and started to get into opioids and cocaine. A third of the high school and middle school students still had their hands up. We have an issue.”

Funding for the presentations was provided by a grant from the National Association of County and City Health Officials. The task force is seeking a federal grant from the Department of Human Services, which would spark “all kinds of

plans for the next three years,” said Maureen Crawford, Hancock County Health Department grants administrator.

“It will become more and more prevalent as time goes on,” Crawford said.

“The best thing we can do is educate our people; educate our educators, our health care providers and parents; and create a climate where people don’t shove it under the rug.”

The mock bedroom of a teen was displayed in the Legacy lobby before the presentation. The exhibit, “Hidden in Plain Sight,” was meant to show how easily drugs and paraphernalia can be hidden from family. It is a tool of Community Partners Against Substance Abuse, which serves Putnam and Bureau counties.

“Some things are very obvious. Some things are not,” CPASA Director Dawn Conerton said. “If you see something obvious, there may be something not so obvious next to it.”

Trump: I was going to fire Comey anyway

WASHINGTON – Contradicting previous White House explanations, President Donald Trump declared Thursday he had planned to fire FBI Director James Comey all along, regardless of whether top Justice Department officials recommended the stunning step.

His assertions came as Comey’s temporary replacement joined in, contradicting other administration statements on the snowballing controversy.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump also said he’d asked Comey point-blank if he was under investigation and was assured three times he was not. Trump showed no concern that the request might be viewed as interference in an active FBI probe into his 2016 campaign’s possible ties to Russia’s election meddling.

“I said, ‘If it’s possible, would you let me know am I under investigation?’ He said you are not under investigation,” Trump told NBC. He said the discussions happened in two phone calls and at a dinner in which Comey was asking to keep his job.

Comey has not confirmed Trump’s account.

The New York Times late Thursday cited two unnamed Comey associates who recounted his tale of a January dinner with the president in which Trump asked for a pledge of loyalty.

Comey declined, instead offering “honesty.” When Trump then pressed for “honest loyalty,” Comey told the president, “you will have that,” said the associates, who told the newspaper they agreed to keep the story confidential while Comey was FBI director.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would “never even suggest the expectation of per-

But the account echoed wording in a comment made a day earlier to The Associated Press by longtime Comey friend Daniel Richman, a former federal prosecutor, who said the president had removed “somebody unwilling to pledge absolute loyalty to him.”

The White House initially cited a Justice Department memo criticizing Comey’s handling of last year’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails as the impetus for Trump’s decision. The White House’s explanations continued to crumble

On Capitol Hill, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe strongly disputed the White House’s assertion that Comey had been fired in part because he had lost the confidence of the FBI’s rank-and-file.

“That is not accurate,” McCabe said. “Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the FBI and still does to this day.”

Unfazed, Sanders insisted she had heard from “countless” members of the FBI who welcomed the president’s decision.

McCabe also pointed out the remarkable nature of Trump’s version of his conversations with Comey. McCabe told a Senate panel it was not “standard practice” to tell an individual whether they are under investigation.

Previous presidents have made a public show of staying out of legal matters, so as not to appear to be injecting politics.

Trump’s comments demonstrated his striking deviation from that practice.

The ousted director himself is said to be confident that his own version of events will come out, possibly in an appearance before Congress, according to an associate who has been in touch with him since his firing Tuesday.

A battle of New Orleans

By intimidation and the veiled or open threat of violence, a motley band of white supremacists, Confederate sympathizers and self-appointed advocates of Southern heritage are endeavoring to halt the city of New Orleans’s efforts to relocate monuments lionizing the Confederacy. By impeding the lawful, legitimate acts of an elected government, the statues’ champions, some of them bearing weapons, are not merely disturbing the peace; they are also revealing their contempt for the basic values of a multicultural democracy and a highly diverse city. They cannot be allowed to succeed.

New Orleans’s plan to remove the four monuments was put in motion by a 6-to-1 vote of the City Council in December 2015, a few months after Dylann Roof, a white supremacist enamored of Confederate symbols, massacred nine African Americans at a prayer service in Charleston, South Carolina.

“The time surely comes when [justice] must and will be heard,” Mitch Landrieu, the city’s Democratic mayor, said at the time. “The Confederacy, you see, was on the wrong side of history and humanity.”

Landrieu has been patient and cautious; now, having beaten back frivolous legal challenges to the city’s plan, he deserves support. His intent is not to destroy the monuments, as obstructionists falsely portray it, but to relocate them to a museum, garden or other site suitable for historical artifacts. That is fair treatment for the monuments, which date from the late 19th century – statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Gens. Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard, and a 15,000-pound obelisk, nearly 40 feet tall, commemorating the bloody 1874 attack by a racist white militia on integrated police forces during Reconstruction.

(The obelisk was removed last month.)

In the flux and reinvention of many big American cities, much goes under the bulldozer’s blade; no one is suggesting that fate for these monuments, which, especially in the case of the Lee statue, are resonant for many New Orleanians.

However, it is a historical fact that the Confederacy rose up against the U.S. in order to preserve an economic system based on slavery – an affront to fundamental human rights.

The Confederate cause and its icons, overtaken by history, are now deeply offensive to many Americans, including black people, who happen to make up a sizable majority of New Orleans’s population.

In a local newspaper, the Advocate, an indignant white New Orleanian, Frank Stewart Jr., disingenuously likened the relocation of the monuments to the destruction of the Egyptians pyramids or the Roman Colosseum. That’s nonsense; the monuments will remain in New Orleans, accessible to the public. Relocating the statues would memorialize and contextualize a distant time without dishonoring it.

In the meantime, Landrieu and New Orleans authorities need and deserve help from the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies to ensure that the open threats by fringe figures – some of whom stand vigil at the statues fully armed, as permitted by Louisiana’s open-carry law – are not fulfilled. The statues’ removal must not be impeded by violent extremists.

Why make student loans tougher?

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has withdrawn Obama administration guidance that would have required the companies that service federal student loans to accept consumer-protection clauses as part of their new contracts.

But if the servicers don’t want to serve borrowers, maybe Congress should remove the servicers from the system.

Because people who take out student loans can’t always repay them on schedule, federal law allows borrowers to make or skip payments based on their income. But the rules are complex.

And borrowers not only have to work with their servicers to get on the right plans, they often look to their servicers to tell them what options they have. Yet the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has caught servicers losing track of paperwork and giving out inconsistent information.

The Obama administration said that in awarding new loan-servicing contracts – the current ones expire in 2019 – bureaucrats should consider the servicers’ past performance. And it said the contracts should include consumer protections.

The Obama team was obviously right.

Why have contracts expire if renewal won’t depend on performance? And since the student-loan system exists to help borrowers pay for their education, not to make a profit for the lender (the federal government), borrower service is a big part of what the servicers are being hired to do.

Yet a lobbying group for the student-loan servicers complained that even under the current contracts, they had been subjected to new requirements and given inadequate compensation. And DeVos appears to be siding with them against the millions of Americans who owe student loans. This is the second time she’s done that; she also dropped an Obamaera rule designed to protect borrowers who default. That’s unfair.

If the companies aren’t willing to take responsibility for customer service, Congress should look for alternatives. Perhaps the Education Department can administer the loans itself.

Or perhaps the IRS, which has experience getting people to pay based on their income, should do it. One way or another, the government must make the student-loan repayment process work for the people caught up in it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

#Russia still dogs Trump administration The Trump administration is foundering at breakneck speed these days, and it can feel overwhelming just trying to keep up. #Russia As I write this, less than 24 hours has passed since President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. This was a stunning development for all but a handful of senior officials in the White House. #Russia Already, The New York Times is adding more to this harrowing story. As Matthew Rosenberg and Matt Apuzzo report, just days before he was fired, Comey “asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in resources for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election, according to four congressional officials,” including Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois.

The very next paragraph: “Mr. Comey made his appeal to Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, who also wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the firing of Mr. Comey this week, the officials said.” #Russia Chances are that no matter when you are reading this column, more has already been discovered about Comey’s firing. Just as surely, it’s bound to make us feel even worse about this Den of

Let us segue for a moment to Iowa, where Rep. Rod Blum, fresh off his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, surrounded himself with black schoolchildren, whom he quickly dumped after he didn’t like a reporter’s question.

The ever-so-white 62-year-old Blum had insisted on verifying the residence of every person wanting to attend his town

hall meeting later that day I’ll leave it to your imagination to wonder why. #Russia Blum got testy with a local reporter who asked about the residency requirement.

The brief exchange, in front of the young children, between KCRG-TV reporter Josh Scheinblum and Blum: Scheinblum: “Some would make the case that you represent all Iowans.

The decisions that you make impact all Iowans. So shouldn’t all Iowans have a voice at the table or at least have the option to?”

Blum: Laughs. “I don’t represent all Iowans. I represent the 1st District of Iowa. That’d be like saying, ‘Shouldn’t I be able to – even though I live in Dubuque – go vote in Iowa City during the election because I’d like to vote in that district instead?’ ” Scheinblum: “Would you still take donations from a Republican in Iowa City?”

“I’m done,” Blum said, standing up and yanking off his microphone as the children around him tried to figure out what was happening. “This is ridiculous.

He’s going to sit here and just badger me.”

“Congressman, come on, take a seat,” Scheinblum pleaded.

Nope. Off he went.

Blum told The Washington Post: “Well, we get there and we were ambushed. ... It was very apparent that he had an agenda. It’s my right to say that ‘this interview is over.’ ” Remind me to wish the future former Rep. Blum well after next year’s midterms, OK? In the meantime, I hope someone explains to the children, who were meant to be props, that just because Blum and the president act this way doesn’t mean they should start treating fellow humans as discardable, too.

By the way, the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum has had it up to here with descriptions of Trump as “Nixonian.”

“FUN FACT,” the library tweeted this week. “President Nixon never fired the Director of the FBI #FBIDirector #notNixonian.”

To which we can only reply: #Russia.

Comey should have been removed a long time ago Former FBI Director James Comey is out, and a lot of people in Washington, D.C., are shocked – but others, not so much. My question is, what took President Donald Trump so long?

In January, after news broke that the Justice Department’s inspector general had opened an investigation into how the now-ousted FBI director “handled the probe of Hillary Clinton’s email practices,” I suggested that it would probably be best for Comey to resign. Unless a change was made at the very top, I thought, the FBI’s reputation, and that of its director, would be met with continued distrust, uncertainty and unabashed hostility.

Fast forward a few months and both parties are now more conflicted than ever before: Republicans because they defended Comey, Democrats because they blamed him. As David Ignatius said this morning, “It’s strange that the Democrats who were so angry at [Comey] are now furious at his firing.” The truth is obvious. Democrats are only interested in Comey’s firing because they think it is good leverage to prod, poke and call for a special prosecutor to investigate this president and his administration in hopes that something bad will happen.

a wild leap. After all, there is no evidence to suggest that Trump is under investigation for colluding with the Russian government. Anything to the contrary is simply partisan spin meant to stymie the president’s agenda.

The left’s constant attacks on Trump sort of remind me of the fake-news narrative that lives today, that “Bush lied, people died” in defending the invasion of Iraq. All the Democrats need is a notso-clever rhyme for the Comey firing to become part of their false narrative about Trump.

Ultimately, the White House will face more criticism and backlash on matters of process than about the long-overdue firing itself. As James Robbins wrote yesterday, the former FBI director “had been a dead man walking for some time.”

His time just arrived sooner than some expected.

Dagraedt, of Ottawa, will speak and sing on the topic of “How to Have Peace in the Midst of Turmoil.”

Dagraedt said she has been ministering in music since 1971. She writes and sings gospel Judy music, leads in “praise Dagraedt and worship” for various events and church services, and has recorded nine gospel albums.

Patti Amsden will be the special guest and speaker at Free Indeed Ministries at 10 a.m. May 20, and she will minister at 9 a.m. May 21 at Harvest Time Fellowship.

Amsden is an author, conference speaker, seminary teacher and a pastor. She is a veteran teacher who has earned a doctorate in ministry from Beacon University in Columbus, Georgia.

Patti Her understanding of Biblical principles has enhanced the messages Amsden that she has proclaimed in pulpits and classrooms for the past 30 years. She also is the author of several books, including, “Portals,” “The Law of Boundaries,” “Evidence that Calls Us to Dance,” “The Apostle’s Creed” and “The Reformer’s Creed.”

Amsden serves as a faculty member of Beacon Institutes, a local church-based higher education extension of Beacon University. She travels extensively throughout the U.S. for the seminary sharing her scriptural insights with the next generation of leaders in the body of Christ.

Along with her travel in the U.S., she has ministered in China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, England, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Panama, Africa, the Philippines and the Bahamas.

Laboring alongside her husband, Pastor Dennis Amsden, Patti Amsden served as co-pastor of Son Life Church in Collinsville, Illinois, for almost three decades. The senior pastoral role of the local assembly, which was pioneered by the Amsdens, was transferred to their son, David Amsden, in 2007. Patti Amsden still serves as part of the pastoral staff.

In May 2012, Amsden began to organize The Kingdom Congress of Illinois, which was established to facilitate a forum for Christian leaders to discuss issues that relate to Illinois.

Dorothy’s Diamonds travelers recently returned from a Holy Week trip to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, and to the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky. It was an eye-opening trip adding to what can be read in the Bible. The group is pictured in front of the life-size replica of Noah’s Ark. Dorothy’s Diamonds owner Dorothy Lockard will donate funds from this trip to help build a new house for Habitat for Humanity in Rochelle. Barb City Manor recently hosted its annual Volunteer Thank-You event.

The Barb City Manor Board of Directors announced Jeanette Biava (right) as its 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Biava, who joined Friends of Barb City Manor in 2012, is involved in a variety of activities. She assists with special parties, such as Oktoberfest and the annual ice cream social, volunteers in the gift shop and helps with Christmas decorating and mailings, in addition to her role as Friends secretary. Biava is pictured with Barb City Manor Board President Tarryn Thaden.

Tyler Jeffrey Voigt, 16, son of Jeffrey and Brandi Voigt of Cortland, has achieved Boy Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.

He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 40, chartered

by St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sycamore and is under the leadership of Scoutmaster Jeffrey Voigt.

Voigt began his Scouting adventure in first grade Tyler Jeffrey as a Tiger Cub with Pack Voigt 822. He went on to earn all five Cub Scout ranks and the highest award, the Arrow of Light, in 2012. He then crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 40, where he has held numerous leadership positions including quartermaster, patrol leader, chaplain aide and senior patrol leader.

He has earned more than 63 merit badges. He was inducted into the Lowaneu Allanque Lodge 41 of the Order of the Arrow in 2014 and earned Brotherhood Membership in 2015.

Voigt has attended many summer camp outings at Camp Freeland Leslie and at Camp Napowan in Wisconsin. He loves high adventure and went to Philmont Scout Ranch in the summer of 2015 for

a 16-day trek.

He will return to Philmont with his troop again this summer. He also went to Northern Tier Canoe Base in Ely, Minnesota, in July 2016 and spent six days canoeing the Boundary Waters with seven members of Troop 40.

In the summer of 2018, he will head to the Summit Bechtel Reserve for a week of adventure and will be able to achieve another goal of his, the Triple Crown in Scouting.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Voigt worked with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve and coordinated a work crew that planted 20 oak trees at the Afton Forest Preserve and planted six sycamore trees at the new Sycamore Forest Preserve. Under his direction, Scouts and adult volunteers completed the project that took more than 185 man-hours.

Voigt is sophomore at Sycamore High School and an active member of the Rugby Club.

He will be working over the summer as a camp counselor for Camp Napowan. He plans to stay active in his troop and lead the younger Scouts. He will attend college after high school to pursue a career of becoming a surgeon or an artist.

Barbs, Knights settle for draw

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Both the Kaneland and DeKalb girls soccer teams will have to settle for a tie heading into the postseason.

The teams played 80 scoreless minutes Thursday in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Both DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton and Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said they were happy with the way their teams played.

“I would have really liked to have sent our seniors out with a victory,” Hamilton said. “But I thought both teams went out and competed well. Two kids (Hanna Hickey and starting goalkeeper Meghan Hanson) who have been in the program, in here every day for four years, I wanted to send them out the right way. It’s not a negative result, but we wanted to make sure we sent them out the right way.”

Parillo said he thought the Knights (10-7-2, 2-4-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) came out a little slow in the first half – they managed only two shots on goal in the contest, both in the second half – but played better in the final 40 minutes.

“I thought we played a much more spirited second half than we did first half,” Parillo said. “I thought we came out a little lackadaisical in the first half, let them know it at halftime, and I think they had a little better effort. I would have loved to have had more offensive productivity, but we didn’t get it.”

For the Barbs, they recorded their second straight shutout, and sixth in conference play – the only NIB 12 team to score on them was the Spartans.

“I think our defense did what they’ve done all year,” Hamilton said. “I’m really proud of these young ladies who have put in the workload and the shifts. I’m proud of their development and at the end of the day, they just keep getting better and it’s really fun to watch.”

By the numbers: Both of Kaneland’s shots came from outside the box, one by Lauren Ortiz and the other from Sophie Ottoson.

Beyond the stats: Since a 1-0 loss March 27 at Boylan, the Barbs have only three nonwins on their record – the two losses (by scores of 3-1 and 2-0) to Sycamore and the tie against the Knights.

They said it: “ They did a great job of putting us on our heels,” Parillo said. “Give credit to PJ and the DeKalb team. They’re much improved – nice and aggressive.

It turned out to be a critical run, with Wheatley’s homer in the bottom of the inning cutting it to the eventual final score of 4-3.

DeKalb starter Torrie Newport held the dangerous Kaneland lineup in check for most of the game, scattering six hits and two walks over six innings for the win. Nelson, who has pitched more for the Barbs as the season has gone on, came in for the save. Davis said even with Weber looming as the third hitter due up in the bottom of the seventh it would be a big experience for the freshman.

By the numbers: The Barbs collected only four hits, including Warner’s game-changing three-run home run.

Along with Riggs’ single, Payton Montgomery and Newport each collected hits. For the Knights, Alexis Abruzzo and Hailey Roach each had singles to go along with Kaneland’s three home runs.

Beyond the stats: Both teams’ right fielders came up with big throws. With Sommesi on first base with two outs, Abruzzo hit a single to right. DeKalb right fielder JC Longeville threw a strike to get Sommesi out at third base to end the third inning. In the top of the seventh, DeKalb’s Rylee Levine hit a fly ball to Kaneland right fielder Kaitlyn Kurzrock, who threw out Erin Karasewski trying to tag up to third base.

They said it: “I was nervous, but (my teammates) helped me out with that,” Nelson said. “Oh my goodness, I was out there and my hands were shaking so bad.”

Up next: The Barbs play at 10 a.m.

Saturday at Plainfield Central. The Knights play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Plainfield North.

GIRLS TRACK: CLASS 3A ANTIOCH SECTIONAL

DeKalb takes 2nd, qualifies 8 entries for state

akantecki@shawmedia.com ANTIOCH – DeKalb girls track and field coach Tywon Green watched Belvidere North close the gap after the first two laps of the 1,600-meter relay and felt his team’s chances of winning Thursday’s Class 3A Antioch Sectional shrinking by the second.

“We were hoping,” Green said. “The way it was looking in those first two heats, Belvidere North was sixth. But those girls really turned it on. They’re awesome. We told our girls it would come down to the 4X400. The race was so close. ... Two weeks in a row.”

Belvidere North won the sectional’s final event with a time of 4:00.84, while DeKalb was second with a time of 4:01.05.

And, for the second straight week, the Barbs finished second in a meet.

Last week, the Barbs were runner-up to Yorkville at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet, falling short by five points. On Thursday, the Barbs lost to Belvidere North by 10 points.

Belvidere North won the 15-team meet with 94 points, followed by DeKalb (84) and Huntley (74).

“Last year, we got first, but we did our best today” said Bri Buggs, who won the 200 in 25.05 seconds and also qualified for state in the 400 relay, which won in 48.78.

“We had some major PRs, so it’s pretty cool. I know getting second is OK, but first (place) would have been way better. We have a lot of freshmen who are really good. Once we get them going even more, we’ll be fine, and we’ll start winning these a lot more.”

In all, the Barbs qualified in eight

events for next week’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University.

Joining Buggs on the winning 400 relay were Kmaris Kirkwood, Kyra Ozier and Mirea Martinez-Fashola.

The Barbs also took first in the 800 relay (1:42.62), which included Kirkwood, Martinez-Fashola, Sierra Long and Buggs.

Running on DeKalb’s second-place 1,600 relay were Long, Martinez-Fashola, Ozier and Brianna Barwick. Barwick, a freshman, also qualified in the 300 low hurdles, winning the event in 46.19.

“I feel like even though we got second, I feel like we pushed ourselves really hard,” Barwick said. “I feel like we worked really hard. “(In the 300 hurdles), I felt as strong as I have all season.”

DeKalb’s Katherine Olsen quali-

fied in both the 800 (2:19.49) and 1,600 (5:01.62), Ozier qualified in the 400 (58.67), and Jasmine Kemp qualified in the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch).

“My strategy was to hang with the top group, and the last two laps try to move up,” Olsen said of the 1,600. “It didn’t really play out that way, but I’m happy with the result. Going into the third lap, I felt like we were moving really quick.”

Despite finishing second, Green said he came away even more excited about the future of DeKalb’s program.

“It was an awesome day for DeKalb track and field,” Green said. “Every year we’re getting better and better, and that’s what we want to see. They’re happy with it. The good thing about my team this year? They’re all coming back, so I’m not losing anybody, which is a really good thing.”

MAPLE PARK – DeKalb softball coach Jeff Davis wasn’t going to let Kaneland slugger Morgan Weber tie it.

Leading by one run with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Barbs elected to walk Weber to bring the potential winning run to the plate. The gamble paid off as DeKalb freshman reliever Ashley Nelson got the next batter to ground out, and the Barbs held on for a dramatic 4-3 victory over the conference-leading Knights on Thursday afternoon in Maple Park.

“That was our approach,” Davis said of throwing four pitches well outside to Weber. “We wanted to see if she would get herself out being a little anxious, but she’s a well-seasoned senior, a great ballplayer and we pretty much walked around her. ... We were going to take our chances with somebody else beating us.”

Weber went 2 for 2 with two walks

and had one of the Knights’ three solo home runs. After Nelson got the first two outs of the inning, she threw a strike on the first pitch to Weber. Davis promptly called time and walked to the circle and Nelson followed with four consecutive balls. Kaneland’s Donatela Sommesi, who homered earlier in the game, grounded out to DeKalb first baseman Jenna Levine to end the game.

“I would expect that,” Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said about the Barbs walking Weber. “I wouldn’t have pitched to Morgan Weber in that situation. ... I would have done the same thing and put her on.”

Even with the game scoreless through four innings, the teams combined for four home runs. Weber and Sommesi opened the scoring with backto-back solo homers in the bottom of the fifth, and Kaneland’s Maddy Wheatley added a solo home run in the sixth.

However, the Barbs scored four in the top of the sixth, thanks partly to a big swing from sophomore Mallory Warner.

Mackenzie Riggs led off the inning with a single and then stole second base when the ball was thrown to Kaneland starter Emilee Erickson. After Erickson walked DeKalb’s Erin Karasewski, Warner hit the fifth pitch from Kaneland reliever Aly Jesionowski over the center-field fence for a 3-2 lead.

Unearned runs costly in defeat

Twins build early 6-0 lead, send Sox to 5th straight loss

CHICAGO – The White Sox disabled list runs deep – starters Carlos Rodon and James Shields and relievers Nate Jones, Jake Petricka and Zach Putnam all are on it – but somehow manager Rick Renteria’s team has managed to play at or near a .500 clip into the first two weeks of May. “A testament to those guys out there,” Renteria said before the Sox lost, 7-6, to the Twins on Thursday night at Guaranteed Rate Field. “The coaching staff does a great job with them, but you’ve got to give those guys credit because they’re the ones that go out on the hill and are in the fire and doing what they do.’’

“We’re all pulling for each other, and that’s the biggest thing,” Swarzak said. “Guys are paying attention to the games, watching pitch for pitch.

Everybody is trying to be the best they can be every time out. That’s really what it takes.’’

The Sox ranked third in baseball with a 3.47 ERA while holding opponents to four runs or less 20 times this season. With runners in scoring position, opponents were batting .232, the seventh best mark in the AL. The bullpen’s 2.39 ERA ranked second in baseball while averaging 9.64 strikeouts per nine innings.

Holland should have been out of the Twins’ four-run first with no damage because Abreu dropped a routine return throw from second baseman Tyler Saladino on what should have been an inning-ending double play. Given new life, the Twins pounced with a Joe Mauer RBI single and Eduardo Escobar three-run homer to make it 4-0.

Holland gave up two more homers in the second, to Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano, as the Twins built a 6-0 lead.

The Sox nicked Phil Hughes for two runs in the fourth and got a three-run homer from Melky Cabrera in the fifth to make it a game, then closed to within 7-6 in the sixth when third baseman Matt Davidson hit his sixth homer against Tyler Duffey.

Davidson, who entered the game in a 2-for-27 rut, collected his first RBI of the night on a sharply hit fielder’s choice but killed the Sox’ two-run rally in the fourth when he was thrown out easily at third by left fielder Eddie Rosario to end the inning. Davidson, with the play in front of him, was trying to get there from first on Tim Anderson’s single.

Grimm optioned to Iowa; Butler joins roster

ST. LOUIS – After surviving three games in two days at Coors Field with the bullpen intact, the Cubs chose to option struggling reliever Justin Grimm to the minors to make room on the roster for Friday’s starter, Eddie Butler.

Butler, the right-hander acquired from the Rockies in a February trade, joins the roster for the weekend series in St. Louis after producing a 1.17 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Iowa.

By sending Grimm to Iowa, the Cubs keep rookie corner infielder Jeimer Candelario on a bench that was

significantly shortened the past week by the need for extra relievers and bumps and bruises to infield starters.

Shortstop Addison Russell was scratched Justin Grimm from Wednesday’s lineup because of shoulder soreness that has bothered him for about a week, and his status is to be evaluated again before Friday’s game.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo is 6 for 50 (.120) with two extra-base hits the past two weeks and has been dealing with a sore left forearm after being hit by a 99-mph fastball from Aroldis Chapman on Sunday night.

He’s expected to return to the lineup Friday after a scheduled day off Wednesday.

The switch-hitting Candelario batted cleanup for the Cubs in Eddie Butler the two games since his recall Tuesday from Iowa, where he was one of the Pacific Coast League’s hottest hitters. He’s a sharp-fielding third baseman who also can play first.

Grimm has struggled much of the season with a 7.53 ERA in 13 appearances, including five runs (three homers) in 42/3 innings in May. Notes: Russell called the shoulder issue “gradual soreness” he attribut-

ed in part to an inconsistent recent schedule that affected his work routine. Russell, who has experienced bouts such as this in recent seasons, said he felt better after a day of treatment Wednesday with an off day scheduled Thursday.

• Right fielder Jason Heyward, who’s on the 10-day disabled list because of a jammed right index finger suffered on a sliding catch May 5, said he expects to return from the DL as soon as he’s eligible – Tuesday, when the Cubs open a 10-game homestand.

“I woke up the next morning and it was all swollen and pretty bad, and I couldn’t pick up a bat,” he said. “We came a long way since then.”

LAKE FOREST – The Bears released veteran receiver Eddie Royal on Thursday.

Royal was limited to nine games in each of his two seasons in Chicago because of injuries after agreeing to a three-year deal in March 2015. He caught 33 passes for 369 yards this year after finishing with 37 receptions for 238 yards and a TD last season.

Royal has 408 catches for 4,357 yards and 28 touchdowns in nine seasons with Denver, San Diego and the Bears.

Beauchamp earns win for G-K softball team DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Katyi Beauchamp earned the win in the circle for the Genoa-Kingston softball team Thursday on senior day, and the Cogs won, 6-3, over Byron.

Beauchamp also helped herself with two RBIs, and Leea Perry added a single.

The Cogs improved to 22-9 overall and will play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Winnebago.

PREP BASEBALL

Barbs fall to Morris: After snapping a long losing streak earlier in the week, DeKalb lost, 8-6, to Morris.

Morris led 7-0 early before the Barbs (7-21, 1-11 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting.

The game originally was scheduled to be played at DeKalb but was moved to Morris because of Wednesday’s rain.

Eric Nelson went 2 for 3 with a run, Matt Searls was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Matt Howard and Tyler Hoffman each added RBIs for the Barbs, who snapped a 16-game losing streak Tuesday with a win over Morris.

Kaneland swept by Yorkville: The Foxes scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to cushion their lead in a 5-2 victory over Kaneland.

The Knights had cut the deficit to 3-2 after scoring two runs in the fifth inning against the Foxes, who are the Northern Illinois Big 12 East champions. Luke Calabrese and Josh Norman each had RBIs for the Knights, who collected four hits.

Sycamore loses at Geneseo: The Spartans were on the wrong end of a low-scoring game, losing, 2-1, at Geneseo.

Tyler Didio went 3 for 3, and the Spartans scored their only run of the game when Austin Schroeder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sycamore starter Jarod Montavon got a no-decision, allowing only one run in six innings. The Maple Leafs scored the game-winning run on a walk-off squeeze bunt.

The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Spartans, who fell to 21-7 overall.

IC falls to ACC: The Timberwolves lost a close one, falling, 5-4, to Aurora Central Catholic at Hinckley-Big Rock.

Cooper Larsen took the loss for Indian Creek (6-14).

Because I can be somewhat obsessive about things, I support knowing the pH of one’s well water, more to protect against excessive acidity than high alkalinity. For people with water pH less than 6.5, I would look at ways to make it more basic. Those with water pH between 6.5 and 8.5 can rest more easily. Even if it is greater than 8.5, the water still probably is safe, but you may want to acidify the water if you are noticing skin problems.

Lastly, whether bottled or from your own well, water still is the best drink choice. We live in a society where the consumption of water is intertwined with the use of sweeteners. This is seen not only in the plethora of sodas we consume, but also in the number of juices, energy drinks, flavored waters and other drinks with chemical sweeteners.

Slightly high pH or not, plain water is the healthiest drink you can choose.

Dear Doctor: We’ve lived in our house for years – and raised three boys on well water.

All have been reasonably healthy. But I recently learned the well water’s pH is 8.5plus. Should we be concerned?

Dear Reader: The pH of water can range from acidic to basic on a scale of 1 to 14, with the pH of pure water at about 7. A pH less than 7 makes the water more acidic, while one greater than 7 makes water more alkaline (basic). The danger of more acidic water – when the pH is less than 6.5 – is it can leach metals from the well and from the pipes that bring you water. These metals include lead, manganese, copper and iron, and they can be toxic in large amounts. So acidic water obviously poses a health risk.

Fortunately, the same is not true of more alkaline water.

There has been no evidence of harm found in drinking water with a pH between 7 and 8.5. (Interesting to note: The pH of human blood is a little on the basic side, 7.365.) When the pH of water becomes greater than 8.5, it can taste more bitter.

This elevated pH also can lead to calcium and magnesium carbonate building up in your pipes. While this higher pH doesn’t pose any health risks, it can cause skin to become dry, itchy and irritated. So, if you or your children are having any skin issues, the pH of your well water could be a reason.

Many companies have advertised the benefits of alkaline water – that is, waters with pH levels greater than 8.5. People who sell such products say alkaline water has benefits in lowering blood sugar, improving

I manage to muster up enough energy to try to be there for my kids but, frankly, I can’t seem to be there for anyone else, including my wife, co-workers and close family. My problem is, this has left me with no emotional support (my children are too young for that, although playing with them is some help) and there are tough days when I really need it.

Despite the anticipation that, because of the prevailing vulnerability, East will not carry the auction to a high level, it looks like a good opportunity to bid two spades. How bad can it be to get your six-card suit into the auction?

Well, on this deal from Bridge Base Online, it resulted in North’s ending in six spades. At three tables, the clever East led the heart queen.

West ruffed and cashed the club ace.

At two other tables, North made the slam after a diamond lead by reading the distribution perfectly. Do you see how?

Some Norths passed to let partner describe his hand. When South rebid two no-trump, North transferred into spades, then control-bid four diamonds. This resulted in six spades by South at three tables. Each West led the club ace, giving declarer an easy ride.

After a diamond lead, however, declarer must endplay West in clubs.

Declarer discards a heart and wins with the diamond ace. He draws trumps, throws another heart on the diamond king, ruffs a diamond, cashes the heart ace, crosses to the heart king and ruffs the last diamond. Then he plays a club to his king. West wins with the ace and is endplayed. If he returns a low club, declarer runs it to the 10. Or, if West leads a diamond, it concedes a ruff-and-sluff.
