I can only hope ‘love conquers all’ Two weeks ago, I wrote about my wife Kay’s start on the road to recovery after the debilitating stroke she suffered April 14.

She has received intensive treatment for all aspects of her condition during her time at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, and now it is time to transfer her back to the subacute nursing facility at our Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, where we live. The rehab process will be less intensive but will continue indefinitely in hopes of restoring some of her speech and memory. The stroke and accompanying aphasia and apraxia affected the left side of the brain, but did not leave her physically impaired.

Since Mother’s Day is coming, I have had time to contemplate all the wonderful things a mother and wife provide. I have told her these things as I sit beside her bed, but should have expressed more appreciation and love over these past 53 years that we have been a couple.

So I offer this advice to those of you who have a mother or spouse: Show your love and appreciation not just once a year with

by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways …,” seems appropriate to share as well.

The Roman poet Virgil wrote that “Love conquers all,” as well as “Endure the present and watch for better things.” He really had a way with words.

Enough of this rambling; I hope to keep writing my column, even though not weekly, but my first priority is her rehabilitation and showing her the love and care she so rightfully deserves right now.

Sycamore trends toward growth; city of DeKalb remains stagnant

Although Illinois continued to see its population decline in 2016, DeKalb County saw a small uptick, and Sycamore continued its trend toward growth.

DeKalb County’s population count was 104,528 for 2016, an increase of 176 residents from 2015, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

The population in the state of Illinois declined by 58,456 residents during that same year.

Since the 2010 census, DeKalb County is down by 632 people, while Illinois as a whole is down by about 30,000, according to the estimates.

Sycamore’s population was counted at 17,600 in 2010, but the amount of building activity in recent years suggests that number could be on the rise.

John Sauter, director of building and engineering, said 50 permits for single-family homes and four permits for multifamily homes with a total of 16 units were issued in Sycamore in 2016.

The number falls in line with 2015, when 49 permits for single-family homes and nine permits for multifamily homes with a total of 26 units were issued.

From January to April 2017, Sycamore has issued 16 permits for single-family homes and one for a fourunit multifamily home, Sauter said.

“I expect this year will keep the same pace as last year based on the numbers so far,” he said.

Sauter said Sycamore should average 50 to 60 single-family homes a year over the next few years based on current trends, although many unexpected factors can affect development.

Sycamore also has plenty of available lots for development, such as Parkside Estates, North Grove Crossings, Camden Crossing and Heron Creek Country Estates, Sauter said.

Mayor Curt Lang said he is hopeful that Sycamore’s growth will continue at a steady pace.

“I think Sycamore is just a good place to live,” Lang said. “Our schools are nice. We’re improving infrastructure at a good rate with our street repairs, and people are friendly.”

While Sycamore continues to see steady growth, Genoa has seen a modest increase, and Cortland has maintained an average of one home built a

Sycamore mayor Despite the growth seen in DeKalb County overall, the city of DeKalb is struggling to encourage people to move to the city.

DeKalb is home to the county’s largest employer, Northern Illinois University. Home development, however, has been stagnant in the city for the past several years.

One building permit for a single-family home was issued in 2016 in DeKalb.

From 2010 to 2015, the city issued a total of 14 building permits for single-family homes and one for a townhome.

Mayor Jerry Smith said he heard during his campaign about issues with the city’s permitting process, such as high impact fees being a deterrent to developers.

“We are very aware that the city of DeKalb issued one housing permit [in 2016], and other cities nearby have outdistanced us tremendously,” he said.

Other deterrents include crime and high taxes dominating people’s perception of DeKalb, Smith said.

“I’ve been here 55 years,” he said.

“This community embraces diversity and different ways of doing things. We have to do more to promote a positive image.”

Smith said creating an atmosphere of transparency and user-friendliness for developers are issues he has put “on the front burner” since recently taking over as mayor.

“This is a friendly city,” he said.

“This is not something we’re going to solve overnight, but I hope over the next few years, we will start to see an uptick in development and population in DeKalb.”

Martinez testifies in attempted-murder trial

SYCAMORE – Nicholle Martinez said when she attacked her husband’s mistress with a rock and a box cutter, the idea was to scare her off – not kill her.

Martinez, 44, of Sycamore told a jury of 11 women and one man in DeKalb County court Wednesday that she was desperate to drive off Elena Mora Garcia, a woman with whom her husband had a long-standing affair.

“I never wanted her dead,” Martinez testified during her trial on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery. “Her being dead would take me away from my family. I just wanted her to stay away from my husband. I still want him home.”

Martinez’s statements Wednesday directly contrasted what she said in a video with DeKalb Police Detective Mark Nachman recorded hours after the attack Sept. 27, 2014, in a parking lot outside Mora’s DeKalb apartment building.

“I flat-out wanted to kill her,” Martinez said on the recording, which was played in court Wednesday.

In the video, Martinez described how she hid before creeping out of the shadows when Mora arrived home about 4 a.m.

“I creeped up and hit her with a rock and started attacking her,” she told Nachman in the video. “She fought back and, and I felt more angry. I grabbed the knife and tried to cut her. I did cut her. Several times.

“I was in a blind rage, and I didn’t stop. The fighting back, I don’t think I was going to stop.”

Martinez, who was a lab technician at Valley West Hospital at the time of the attack, told Nachman it was fortuitous that a scalpel she’d brought along fell out of her pocket and into Mora’s car.

“That was a good thing,” she said.

“The box cutter didn’t cut as well, so if I would have gotten the knife open, that would have sliced her throat because it’s a scalpel.”

She was the only witness called by her lawyer, Loren Blumenfeld. Her husband, Luis, was on the list of potential witnesses, but was not called.

Blumenfeld had tried multiple times to have the video interview with Nachman barred, stating that after officer Chris Sullivan read Martinez her Miranda rights, she said she thought she needed to talk to a lawyer. Blumenfeld’s motions were denied by

On the witness stand, Martinez testified she found out while six months’ pregnant with her fifth child, her third with Luis, that his relationship with Mora had become sexual. Luis supervises Mora at the Sycamore Taco Bell restaurant. He also posted $50,000 bail for his wife in May 2015 so she could be released from jail.

Martinez spoke at length about having her uterus and thyroid removed on the same day after being diagnosed with cancer in December 2013, how Lexapro only made her depression and anxiety worse, and how she transitioned to Xanax until it started having the same effect. Three days before the attack, she stopped taking Xanax,

she said.

On cross-examination, First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein pointed out that medication never came up in interviews with Nachman – neither in the 15 or so minutes they initially spoke, nor during the 38-minute video.

In the video, Martinez speaks for the first 18 minutes, virtually without prompting or interruption.

According to Nachman’s report, and testimony, Martinez used the term “premeditated” twice during their initial conversation – which was not recorded.

“I don’t remember using the words premeditated,” she told Blumenfeld.

“I think [Nachman] did.”

She claimed during Klein’s cross-examination that she didn’t remember saying she wanted to kill Mora.

“I’ve seen the videotapes,” she said.

“I’ve seen myself saying that, but I don’t remember.”

She admitted to bringing safety goggles, several medical masks, several pairs of rubber gloves, a scalpel, box cutter, matches and wine corks, all presented to her in court Wednesday, during her nearly 4-mile walk from her home in the 1800 block of Kerrybrook Court to Mora’s apartment in the 1300 block of Sycamore Court in DeKalb.

“And you did want Elena Mora dead, didn’t you?” Klein said.

“No, I did not,” Martinez said. “I do not.”

The defense rested about 2 p.m. after calling five members of the DeKalb Police Department to testify.

Stuckert said she expects closing arguments about noon Thursday, after which the jury will deliberate.

If convicted of attempted first-degree murder, Martinez could face six to 30 years in prison.

DeKALB – A design study to determine the feasibility of eliminating the easternmost traffic lane on First Street, where the proposed Cornerstone project will be, in order to expand the walkway was approved Monday by the City Council.

The potentially affected stretch is between Lincoln Highway and the nearby railroad tracks.

“When two people are walking next to each other, you are taking up the entire width of the sidewalk,” said Jo Ellen Charlton, DeKalb community development director. “And the northbound traffic lane on Lincoln makes pedestrians feel even more insecure.”

The study, which will be done by St. Charles-based WBK Consulting for an amount not to exceed $34,480, will be contingent on a $25,000 contribution

from John Pappas, the Cornerstone project’s principal developer.

Charlton said WBK will analyze the amount of traffic buildup resulting from the removal of one of the lanes, and will provide a total cost estimate of any proposed recommendations.

Once the data is collected, the council may vote on Phase 2 of the project, during which WBK will complete construction drawings of proposed improvements, including Illinois Department of Transportation permits and bidding documents. Phase 2 is expected to cost $67,500.

An amendment to make the agreement contingent on Pappas’ contribution was approved by a 5-3 vote, with 2nd Ward Alderman Bill Finucane, 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Marquardt and 5th Ward Alderman Kate Noreiko voting no. The amended agreement was then passed, 6-2, with Finucane and Marquardt again voting no.

“This food drive is not only important because of the anniversary, but the coalition tries to link the city of DeKalb with the university,” Kron said. “We should always be working closely, and this is a really good indication of how we are doing that.”

Mail trucks in the northwestern part of DeKalb, which includes campus housing, will deliver their goods to the Huskie Food Pantry.

Liz McKee, assistant director of the Student Involvement and Leadership Development Division of Student Affairs at NIU, said that although most students will be leaving campus in the coming weeks, the university still will be open every other week, so there are boxes for collections in campus residence halls, as well.

Those wishing to participate also may drop off bags of food at the DeKalb Post Office at 600 E. Lincoln Highway and the Sycamore Post Office at 104 E. State St.

DeKALB – To raise awareness for one of the largest single-day food drives in the nation, DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith signed a proclamation for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger drive.

This year, the event is a partnership between the National Association of Letter Carriers, who hold the drive, and the Huskie Food Pantry of Northern Illinois University, which serves students who don’t have a meal plan.

Postal carriers in DeKalb, Sycamore, Cortland and Malta will distribute about 10,000 paper bags in DeKalb and about 6,000 bags in Sycamore to residents, with the hope they can be filled with nonperishable food items and left by people’s mailboxes for pickup. The bags then will be collected Friday.

“I’ve known about this particular drive for many years and have left food at my mailbox for this drive in the past, knowing it will go to feed the hungry,” Smith said. “This year, we were especially gratified NIU was contacted, and a lot of food will be going to the NIU food bank.”

Where do babies come from? Explaining this to a child has required many imaginative explanations. During the 19th century in the U.S. and Europe, the most popular answer was “the stork brought him” or “he was found in the cabbage patch.” There are stories dating well before the 1600s that say a baby was found under a large cabbage leaf or was delivered by a flying stork.

For centuries, each country had a story. The baby was brought from midwives, wild women of the forest, owls, foxes, a male water sprite, a raven or a crow. The baby could be found under a gooseberry bush, or a lime tree in countries that didn’t grow cabbages. No one really knew where babies came from until the 1680s, when the microscope and other discoveries helped scientists figure it out. It was not until the 1830s that most people were convinced a man and woman, not a stork, made a baby. In Germany, there was the legend of Der Kindlbringer, the bringer of babies. He carried a bundle of babies in a bunting, in a basket or on his back. He was dressed like a harlequin.

Several different German porcelain figurines that were made in about 1850 were sold at a Theriault auction on July 26, 2016 in Washington, D.C. The five-inch porcelain figure of a man carrying six babies sold for $513. *** Q: I would like to get vintage champagne glasses to friends as an anniversary gift. I have been told that new glasses are flutes, but old ones are coupe-shape with round bowls.

A: Wine connoisseurs will tell you to serve champagne in a flute. That shape became popular about 1950, and blown-glass hollow-stem champagne glasses banned from many restaurants. The stems were too hard to clean. The flute replaced it for sparkling drinks. However, there recently has been a new way to serve champagne. Use a regular wine glass, probably a Bordeaux glass that has straight sides and tapers a bit to the rim. Some experts say these glasses let the aroma last longer.

The bubbles look best in a flute, but any of these glasses can be correct for less-formal parties. The flute probably is expected for a diplomatic or royal affair. Remember: Fine crystal is thin and breaks easily. It must be carefully placed in a dishwasher, or better yet, washed by hand. *** Q: We were recently given a collection of hatpins. They were passed on to us from my fiancee’s

grandmother. We believe they are from around 1921. We’d like to sell them as a whole collection or individually to collectors. What is the best way to do this?

A: Women wore bonnets that tied under the chin until about 1860. Hatpins came into use when hats without ties became fashionable and the pins were needed to hold them on. Hatpins also were used to pin hairpieces on to create the puffy hairstyles popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

When smaller hats and shorter hair became popular in the 1920s, hatpins were no longer needed.

Hatpins have been made of a variety of materials, can be simple or ornate, and can be as long as 12 inches. They sell today for less than $15 to a few hundred dollars. Their value is determined by workmanship and the materials. Gold, silver or valuable jewels increase the hatpin’s value. The American Hatpin Society, (www.americanhatpinsociety.com) may be able to help you find someone interested in your collection. *** Q: I have a doll that belonged to my mother, who was born about 1882. It’s a girl doll with long reddish-brown hair. The head and lower arms are ceramic, and the rest of the body seems to be thin leather. The eyes open and close. A leg once broke, and some stuffing came out that looks like sawdust. I can’t find any markings, so information would be greatly appreciated.

A: Your doll’s head and shoulders are made of bisque. It has glass eyes that open and close, which are called “sleep eyes.” Its body is made of kid leather. Dolls with kid bodies were popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Sheepskins were moistened, stretched and cut. The pieces were sewn together, first by hand and by the early 1900s, by machine. Then, the bodies were stuffed.

Your doll probably was made by the J.D. Kestner & Co., which was active 1805 to 1938 in Waltershausen,Thuringia, Germany. About 1902, Kestner advertised dolls with bisque heads, sleep eyes, flowing hair wigs, teeth and kid bodies stuffed with sawdust, cork or hair. Kestner marks are on the back of the dolls’ heads, so maybe hair is hiding your doll’s markings. Your doll is worth about $400 to $600. *** Q: I have a set of Crooksville China that was my mother’s. There are about 70 pieces, including serving pieces. All pieces are in good condition.

The dishes are white with blue laurel leaves and green ribbons around the edge and a laurel wreath in the center of the plate. I’d like to know something about the dishes and value, if any, other than

Senate approves abortion safeguards

SPRINGFIELD – The Democratic-controlled Illinois Senate voted Wednesday to expand public financing for abortions and ensure legal access to the procedure across the state, although the measure likely awaits a veto by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Senators voted along party lines, 33-22, in favor of the plan, which would permit abortion coverage by state employee health insurance and Medicaid funds. It would also strike statutory language expressing the state’s intent to criminalize the procedure if the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized it is ever overturned.

“It’s not our place here in this chamber to decide when it’s appropriate for a woman to decide whether or not she should get an abortion,” said Democratic Sen. Heather Steans of Chicago, the bill’s Senate sponsor.

The measure, which previously cleared the House, now heads to Rauner.

In responding to a questionnaire as a gubernatorial candidate in 2014, Rauner said he disliked existing law restricting taxpayer-funded abortion coverage and that he’d support a legislative effort to reverse the law.

Firefighters honored and remembered in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Firefighters who died in the line of duty were honored during a ceremony at the state Capitol.

The annual Illinois Fallen Firefighters Memorial and Fire Fighting Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony was held Tuesday in Springfield.

The families of two late firefighters were presented with a gold badge. They were Captain Eric Kohlbauer of the Freeport Rural Fire Protection District and Kenneth Harris, a firefighter and paramedic in Oak Park.

Also, two dozen firefighters received the Firefighter Excellence Award for an act of service in the line of duty. The winners included firefighters from departments in Chicago, Kankakee and Pekin.

Midlothian school honoring 2 late students at prom

MIDLOTHIAN – A Midlothian high school plans to honor two students who died as the class’ “honorary” prom king and queen.

The Daily Southtown reported that Bremen High School in Midlothian will honor Mark Gorman and Paola Zambrano during Friday’s prom. Gorman was hit and killed in October by a vehicle while walking home from Boy Scouts. Zambrano died in 2015 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Bremen Principal Dave Kibelkis called Gorman and Zambrano “two wonderful kids.” He said the school also will honor them with two empty seats and posthumous diplomas at graduation.

The school still will have a prom court and students are scheduled to vote for king and queen when they enter the dance Friday night at Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park.

Court upholds FOIA decision involving College of DuPage

CHICAGO – An Illinois appellate court has ruled that the College of DuPage Foundation is subject to the state’s open records law and ordered it to turn over a federal subpoena that the Chicago Tribune requested.

The unanimous decision marks the first time an Illinois higher court has ruled in favor of releasing records in possession of a public college’s fundraising organization, the Tribune reported.

The ruling upholds an earlier ruling by a DuPage Circuit Court judge.

“The Tribune is very pleased with the decision, which is a victory for transparency regarding the affairs of government,” said Karen Flax, the newspaper’s vice president of legal. “The Appellate Court’s decision confirms that public bodies – such as the College of DuPage – cannot shield public records by attempting to contract out governmental functions to a third party.”

The newspaper sued the college and the foundation in April 2015 to obtain various documents after its open-records requests

available to privately insured individuals.

But Republicans countered on the floor that asking taxpayers to fund the procedure goes too far, particularly amid the state’s budget impasse.

“Abortion in itself is repulsive,” said Republican Sen. Neil Anderson of Rock Island. “But to use taxpayer dollars is an absolute travesty.”

Sen. Toi Hutchinson, an Olympia Fields Democrat, pointed to legislation she said supports the well-being of children and mothers along with a robust economy that her Republican colleagues have opposed, such as paid sick leave and subsidized child care.

“The single best thing we can do for our economy is to have over 52 percent of its members able to fully participate in the economic stream,” she said.

Democrats also contended the bill’s second prong, which would remove language in current law they say threatens to re-criminalize abortion if Roe v.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Days before he was fired by Donald Trump, FBI Director James Comey requested more resources to pursue his investigation into Russia’s election meddling and the possible involvement of Trump associates, U.S. officials said Wednesday, fueling concerns that Trump was trying to undermine a probe that could threaten his presidency.

It was unclear whether word of the Comey request, put to deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, ever made its way to Trump. But the revelation intensified the pressure on the White House from both political parties to explain the motives behind Comey’s stunning ouster.

Trump is the first president since Richard Nixon to fire a law enforcement official overseeing an investigation with ties to the White House. Democrats quickly accused Trump of using Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation as a pretext and called for a special prosecutor into the Russia probe. Republican leaders brushed off the idea as unnecessary.

Defending the firing, White House officials said Trump’s confidence in Comey had been eroding for months. They suggested Trump was persuaded to take the step by Justice Department officials and a scathing memo, written by Rosenstein, criticizing the director’s role in the Clinton investigation.

“Frankly, he’d been considering letting Director Comey go since the day he was elected,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, a sharply different explanation from the day before, when officials put the emphasis on new Justice complaints about Comey.

The investigation has shadowed Trump from the outset of his presidency, though he’s denied any ties to Russia or knowledge of campaign coordination with Moscow.

Trump, in a letter to Comey dated Tuesday, contended that the director had told him “three times” that he was not personally under investigation. The White House refused Wednesday to provide any evidence or greater detail.

Former FBI agents said such a statement by the director would be all but unthinkable.

Outraged Democrats called for an independent investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia’s election interference, and were backed by a handful of prominent Republican senators. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, with the support of the White House, brushed aside those calls, saying a new investigation would only “impede the current work being done.”

Flynn’s Russia ties are also being scrutinized by the FBI. The White House appeared caught off guard by the intense response to Comey’s firing, given that the FBI director had become a pariah among Democrats for his role in the Clinton investigation.

In defending the decision, officials leaned heavily on a memo from Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, that criticized Comey’s handling of the Clinton investigation.

But Rosenstein’s own role in Comey’s firing became increasingly murky Wednesday.

Three U.S. officials said Comey recently asked Rosenstein for more manpower to help with the Russia investigation. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that although he couldn’t be certain the request triggered Comey’s dismissal, he said he believed the FBI “was breathing down the neck of the Trump campaign and their operatives and this was an effort to slow down the investigation.”

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores denied that Comey had asked Rosenstein for more resources for the Russia investigation.

Trump seeks closer ties to Russia with meeting

WASHINGTON – All but ignoring the unfurling drama over Russia and the U.S. election, President Donald Trump on Wednesday sought to advance prospects for cooperation between the former Cold War foes in Syria and elsewhere in a rare Oval Office meeting with Vladimir Putin’s top diplomat.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Trump were already destined to be a closely watched affair, given the dire state of U.S.-Russian relations and diplomatic wrangling going on over a Moscow-backed deal to stabilize Syria.

Yet Trump’s stunning decision on the eve of the meeting to fire the FBI director overseeing a Russia-related investigation injected further intrigue into Lavrov’s first visit to Washington since 2013.

Trump “raised the possibility of broader cooperation on resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere,” according to a White House statement.

Trump and Lavrov met in private, although both sides cast the session as a sign of ties having improved since the U.S. leader’s assessment of them last month as at an “all-time low.” On Wednesday, they focused on areas of budding agreement and Lavrov sought

The last time Lavrov visited the American capital was before Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine and intervened militarily in Syria to help President Bashar Assad – actions that fueled U.S.-Russian tensions.

Comey’s dismissal escalated concerns in both parties that Trump may be trying to undermine an investigation that appears to be gaining steam. Trump insisted that wasn’t the case. He said Wednesday he fired Comey because he “was not doing a good job.”

Puerto Illinois?

Puerto Rico, an American territory, last week came face to face with the reality of which Hertbert Stein spoke. Facing billions of dollars in debt, it filed for the equivalence of bankruptcy in federal court, the first time an American state or territory has ever taken such action.

What’s bad for Puerto Rico, the complete collapse of its finances because of years of financial mismanagement, is a warning for Illinois. That’s because even as Puerto Rico has gone over the cliff, Illinois’ leaders are speeding toward the edge of that same cliff.

Puerto Rico listed $123 billion in debt and pensions obligations, way beyond the $18 billion in Detroit reported when it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013. But Puerto Rico’s staggering numbers still are far less than the debts Illinois acknowledges – $130 billion in underfunded pensions, $12 billion-plus in unpaid bills and another roughly $8 billion in deficits run up in the absence of a state budget over the past two years.

The federal board that has supervised the island’s financial affairs reports that, as a consequence of its dire financial state, Puerto Rico is “unable to provide its citizens effective services.” As a consequence, pensions earned over a lifetime of work will be lost, public safety will be endangered, infrastructure will be neglected, and health and human services will not be available. Ultimately, the island’s best people will opt to move somewhere else because there will be no reason to stay in such a deplorable situation.

Puerto Rico’s immediate future could be Illinois’ near future. Our state already spends so much money on Medicaid and pension for retirees that its core duties – K-12 schools, higher education, roads, law enforcement, social and mental health services – are being starved of resources.

How did Puerto Rico end up in such a mess? Obviously, the Great Recession put it behind the eight ball. But the bigger problem was its long-standing practice – like in Illinois – of spending far more than it collected in revenues, and then resorting to financial gimmicks – like in Illinois – to paper over the problems.

No one wants to see what happened in Puerto Rico happen in Illinois. So why are Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan locked in a struggle that has more to do with the 2018 gubernatorial election than it does with the people of Illinois?

The answer, of course, is that politics always trumps policy in this sorry state, and it will until the day comes when financial reality trumps all.

This did not have to happen What can an advanced nation, with high-level medical care, say to the Somali-American community of Minnesota, where an outbreak of measles, highly infectious and potentially deadly, is racing ahead because many people failed to get their children vaccinated, fearing a link to autism? This is what must be said: The fears are wrong, vaccinations save lives and this community must overcome distrust in order to overcome disease. There is no excuse for ignorance, not in Minnesota or anywhere else.

As Post reporter Lena H. Sun described in an article Friday, the Somali community in Minnesota is the largest in the U.S. In 2008, parents raised concerns that their children were disproportionately receiving treatment for autism spectrum disorder. A University of Minnesota study in 2010 found that Somali children were about as likely as white children to be identified with autism, but Somali children with autism were more likely to have intellectual disabilities. Although extensive research has disproved the

fears of a link between vaccination and autism, Sun reported that fear of vaccination became entrenched in the Somali community. Parents kept their children from inoculation with the highly effective measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

In 2004, 92 percent of Somali children in Minnesota were vaccinated, but by 2014 the rate plummeted to 42 percent, well below the 92 to 94 percent needed to protect a group.

Fears of vaccination deepened in Minnesota after Somali parents talked to Andrew Wakefield, the anti-vaccine activist who privately visited at least three times in 2010 and 2011.

Wakefield’s 1998 study purporting to show a link between vaccines and autism was later identified as fraudulent. It was retracted by the medical journal that published it, and his medical license was revoked.

The measles virus, which spreads through the air when a person coughs or sneezes, recently got a foothold among the unvaccinated children in Minnesota. According to the state

health department, as of Tuesday there were 50 cases, of whom 45 were unvaccinated. All but three are children. More cases are expected. Measles was once a scourge that infected 3 million to 4 million Americans annually, of whom 400 to 500 died. Because of the vaccine, the disease was almost completely eradicated in the U.S. by 2000. However, travelers have sometimes brought it from abroad; Somalia continues to have hundreds of suspected cases.

The vaccine is safe; two doses are about 97 percent effective at preventing measles. But the existence of groups of unvaccinated children, such as those in Minnesota, are an outbreak waiting to happen. This is entirely unnecessary. The events in the Somali-American community are not caused by a lack of medical technology or know-how, but rather by the rise of ignorance and fear. They provide a lesson to be spread far and wide: Do not give in to mindless irrationality about vaccines. They can save lives.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

U.S. on path to French-style economic sclerosis?

There is a lot of debate over President Donald Trump’s record after his first 100-plus days in office. Defenders of the president point to his successful efforts on deregulation, the successful appointment to the Supreme Court of Neil Gorsuch and his steadfast desire to implement substantial tax reform.

Critics point to his insistence on counterproductive immigration and trade policies, an incoherent foreign policy and his overall lack of policy acumen.

One thing is for sure, however: The U.S. is headed toward French-style economic sclerosis if Washington continues its reckless spending spree.

My native France is an economic mess.

It might sound wonderful to some that the French are “entitled” to health care, can retire at age 60, have to work for only 35 hours a week and get “free” education.

But this spending comes at a cost; 57 percent of the French economy (as measured by the gross domestic product) is spent every year by the government.

To pay for it, you need more taxes – and not just high marginal income tax rates and payroll taxes. The French

also pay a 20 percent value-added tax, along with a 33.33 percent corporate income tax and hundreds of other punitive revenue-generating measures.

French policymakers have responded to the resulting sluggish economic growth and persistently high unemployment by making the market for labor horrifyingly inflexible and insulating workers from the competitive market forces that generate long-term prosperity. This results in stubbornly high unemployment rates, mounting debt and an exodus of intelligent French brains to other countries with brighter economic prospects.

The mood has become so grim that more than 10 million French voters just turned to the National Front party of Marine Le Pen for hope.

Although Le Pen lost to centrist Emmanuel Macron, little will change unless major reforms are made to the debilitating French welfare system, which pays people not to work while providing handouts for everything from the rent to subway tickets. It’s admittedly hard for me to be optimistic, given how ingrained government dependency is in France. But my bigger concern is that the U.S. is on the same path – even if there’s a substantial reduction in red tape here and Trump is able to implement reforms

to a tax code that currently suffocates job producers and disincentivizes working, savings and investment.

Although we can still pat ourselves on the back for not having fully embraced France’s combination of big government and low growth, any hope for 3 percent or 4 percent annual economic growth that Trump officials are relying on will fade if federal spending – and its byproduct, debt – isn’t curtailed.

Unfortunately, there remains scant evidence that the Trump administration is interested in pursuing the measures necessary to bring federal spending and debt under control.

Trump never misses a chance to tout his alleged deal-making prowess, but his administration’s first budget negotiation just ended with higher spending and Democrats getting most of what they wanted.

Then there’s the American Health Care Act (already being labeled “Trumpcare”), just passed in the House.

Despite what its apologists claim, even if it were to be signed into law as is, it wouldn’t get rid of Obamacare.

Sure, Trumpcare would cut taxes, but as we’ve seen in the past, tax cuts don’t last long if spending continues to flow unabated.

Indeed, if critics are correct,

If the historic advantage of a gerrymandered district held true, Hultgren would be sitting pretty during the upcoming 2018 election.

But this time, things will be different because “Republican” is no longer a one-size-fits-all label. The recent health care bill ruckus in the House revealed how splintered the party actually is.

Conditions leading up to the recent vote were less a deliberation by the Republican majority than they were an acrimonious

fur ball of competing agendas. The resulting bill was a dog’s dinner of features that hold little chance of surviving a review by cooler heads in the Senate. Hultgren had no good alternatives, and consequently voted for this mess.

Short of the discovery of an indictable offense by a highly placed official in the White House, Hultgren isn’t particularly likely to have to fear a Democratic opponent in the next election. However, he has a lot to worry about in regard to Republicans who are unhappy with the status quo.

No doubt the congressman will receive financial campaign support from the RNC and those special interest political

That outcome would most likely translate into more government spending (including potentially massive bailouts), and promised cuts to Medicaid could actually turn into an expansion of a program that is already a budgetary problem at both the federal level and the state level.

Oh, did I mention the not-so-small problem of the fact that Social Security and Medicare are consuming an ever-greater share of budgetary resources? The president said he remains committed to leaving those programs untouched, which would be the height of fiscal irresponsibility.

Should all of this blow up on Trump and the GOP, the predictable response from Democrats and their allies on the left would be to push for more wealth-destroying taxes, including the implementation of a value-added tax on top of the current tax morass.

It could also mean more pressure to achieve the left’s dream of a completely government-run single-payer health care system.

Vive la Trump? Definitely not yet.

Hultgren’s ‘safe’ district might not be

To the Editor: Congressman Randy Hultgren has a dilemma, and a map of the 14th Congressional District illustrates the problem.

Sadly, the 14th Congressional District’s borders look like an EKG gone bad. The reason for the discombobulated appearance is that the border was drawn to enclose no more than a minority of Democrats and provide Republicans with a “safe” seat.

The practice of rigging congressional district borders is unfortunately legal as long as every district in the U.S. holds approximately the same number of people.

Every 10 years, a new U.S. Census is

action committees, whose lobbyists showered him with attention the last time around. But as the recent presidential campaign revealed, having the biggest campaign fund is not a guarantee of victory if your competitor is better at connecting with voters than you are.

Even now, potential Republican primary opponents are likely thinking about positions that tag Hultgren with voting for a health care bill that gave massive tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of the very people who voted for Trump.

As old-time Texans were known to say, “What goes ’round, comes ’round.”

Sycamore will be a No. 1 team in the sectional for third time in five years

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – For the third time in five seasons, the Sycamore baseball team will come into the postseason with a No. 1-seed target on its back.

The Spartans, who advanced to the Class 3A supersectionals last season, will be a No. 1 seed in their own sectional when they open up the postseason later this month.

“It definitely puts a target on your back when you have the four or five seed saying, ‘Hey, we should have been the one seed,’ ” Sycamore ace pitcher Jack Mizgalski said. “I think we’re able to handle that target on our backs. I think it’s a challenge for us to uphold that No. 1 seed.”

In recent seasons, the Spartans had a deep playoff run when they entered as the No. 1 seed. In 2014, they made the supersectionals and in 2013, they advanced to the sectional final. However, Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said that there isn’t much of a psychological difference being the top seed in the bracket.

“I knew we were in contention for it, and we didn’t get it by a lot,” Cavanaugh said of getting the No. 1 seed. “I don’t think it (matters). It matters who you play and you’re supposed to play a 4 or 5 after that, but it’s baseball. It’s one-and-done. That’s the tough part about it. You might be better than the other team over a three-game series,

The Spartans (21-6) have five games remaining in the regular season and will play their Class 3A Aurora Central Catholic Regional semifinal May 24 against the winner of the play-in game between No. 6 Plano and No. 9 Sandwich. Sycamore won, 5-1, at Plano on April 22 and will play at Sandwich in the regular-season finale.

Sycamore came into the season with high expectations after bringing back seven starters from the team that lost late to Limestone in the supersectionals a year ago. However,

the Spartans got a wake-up call early, losing 9-7 in the first game of the year at Burlington Central, which is the No. 2 seed in the same sub-sectional in which Sycamore is the No. 1 seed.

“I think it was really good for us to lose the first game of the year,” Cavanaugh said. “We were kind of walking with a swagger that we maybe hadn’t earned yet, and we go out and lose the first game of the year and it’s like, ‘Oh, OK. Maybe we’re not going to go out and roll over everybody because we return seven starters from a supersectional team.’ Our guys have done a good job of grinding it out.”

The Spartans are riding an eightgame winning streak and have won 11 of their past 12 games, but Cavanaugh said that they’ve had to rely heavily on their pitching to do it. During a 10game stretch, they averaged 4.2 runs a game but won nine of them because they only allowed 2.5 runs a game.

However, they seemed to have broken out of their offensive slump – averaging six runs in their past four games – and recorded 12 hits in a 7-4 victory over Geneseo, which is a No. 1 seed in the Metamora Sectional, on Tuesday.

“I think that once two or three guys have good at-bats, then it’s just contagious,” Mizgalski said.

With three games slated the rest of this week – at Geneseo on Thursday, hosting Hampshire on Friday and hosting Oswego East on Saturday – the Spartans also are dealing with some injury problems. Star shortstop Zach Carlsen injured his wrist on Monday and is still waiting to have it re-evaluated, Mizgalski is dealing with back problems and will miss Saturday’s game because he has to take a test for college and sophomore infielder Logan Riley may have strep throat, Cavanaugh said Wednesday.

“This weekend might get a little interesting,” Cavanaugh said. “But a lot of guys are going to get a chance to play and as well they should. They practice hard every day just like everybody else does.”

More experienced DeKalb looking for state success

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Last year, four DeKalb newcomers went down to the IHSA State Badminton Tournament and were bounced out in two matches.

This year, three of those players are back, and both the Barbs and retiring head coach Duane Cowley – in his 31st season and 21st trip to state – have higher expectations for the tournament, which starts Friday in Charleston.

“I’m really expecting the jitters to be gone and for them to have good mental focus,” Cowley said. “They’re physically ready to perform. They have the shots, they have the experience. I real-

ly look for us to get some wins. We’ve had teams go down before as novices, have nerves, struggle, then come back later and start to accumulate wins.

And that’s what I expect this group to do this year. Not just go, but go down there and get some wins.”

The Barbs qualified a pair of doubles teams, with juniors Holly Trapp and Hui Zhu back after a trip last year.

Junior Helene Collin also qualified last year in doubles, but her partner graduated. She’ll return this year with a new partner, senior Alyse Mommer.

Cowley said he hopes at least one of his doubles teams can reach the second day of the tournament – the round of 16.

Zhu said she thinks either doubles team can make it that far, but doesn’t want to repeat the double sweep of last year.

“We’ve practiced so much for it, we’ll be fine,” Zhu said. “We definitely want to win a match. We know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s challenging. We’re going against some very strong teams, but we’re a strong team too.”

Trapp and Zhu lost last year to Schaumburg’s Dhun Patel and Wasinee Siewsrichol, 21-9, 21-9, in the first round, and then lost a first-round elimination bracket match to Maine West’s Brooke Gorski and Megan Kalinowski, 21-19, 21-9.

“I feel more prepared this year and know more what to expect,” Trapp said. “Last year, I was nervous about making sure I had everything ready, and making sure I had my uniforms ready. But this year I know what to do.”

This year, Collin and Mommer open with Deerfield’s Brooke Buranosky and Ellie Wilson, while Trapp and Zhu will face Hinsdale South’s Claire Pomey and Priya Deshmukh.

Mommer said she’s a little nervous heading in.

“It’s a little more pressure because they’ve already seen what’s there,” Mommer said. “It raises me to a higher level, because I know what they’re expecting and I have to bring that motivation and that help, and that skill as well.”

Cowley said he’s excited for his last trip to the state tournament. He said he has volunteered for the games committee the past couple years, roving and helping as needed, but elected not to this year.

“I’m just going to enjoy my teams and the experience, say goodbye to old friends,” Cowley said. “I expect wins.

There should be much more celebrating this year.”

Boston said Garcia is “more than holding his own this year.”

Garcia was relegated to designated hitter last season and, given a second chance to be the regular right fielder in a rebuilding year in 2017, “he’s taken it and run with it,” Boston said.

“He talked to (strength and conditioning coach) Allen (Thomas) about being more explosive out of the shoot

with his first step,” Boston said. “And he’s always been a worker. Likes to throw every day during batting practice.

“He’s been up against it, and to see him get off to the start he is getting off to is pleasant, and we’re all happy for him.”

By improving his diet, Garcia lost close to 15 pounds before the beginning of the season. Some of it has returned and two weeks ago he was at 248 pounds, Thomas said, but for

Relay bounces back strong for DeKalb Rain wreaks havoc on Antioch Sectional; will conclude Thursday

akantecki@shawmedia.com ANTIOCH – DeKalb freshman Kyra Ozier thought back to the last time she raced in the 400-meter relay and made sure the same mistake wouldn’t happen again at the Class 3A Antioch Sectional on Wednesday.

“It was definitely on my mind before I ran,” said Ozier, who dropped the baton on the first handoff at last week’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet, costing the Barbs a chance to win their first conference championship since 1987.

“I just made sure my hands were really dry – anything I could do to keep the water off – so (the baton) didn’t slip out in the rain. The rain did kind of scare me when it first started, but I didn’t think about it once it started.”

– Kmaris Kirkwood, Mirea Martinez-Fashola and Bri Buggs – didn’t have any problems Wednesday despite the steady rain, which kept the meet from being finished Wednesday.

It will conclude Thursday.

The Barbs won the relay with a time of 48.78 seconds and advanced to next week’s state meet at Eastern Illinois in Charleston. It was the first time all season that DeKalb’s 400 relay team ran in the 48s, Ozier said, and it also set a new school record.

Harlem was second in the 400 relay with a time of 49.22, and McHenry finished third and also qualified at 49.33.

“I was really excited, but I was also really nervous” Ozier said. “Things were a lot easier in middle school.

Now it’s a whole new level of competition where everybody is fast. Everyone is running next to you, so it pushes you to do better in your races.”

Jasmine Kemp also qualified in

the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch). She was runner-up to Huntley’s McKenzie Krich (5 feet, 3 inches).

Kemp is the only returning state qualifier from last year’s sectional champion.

The rest of the DeKalb team will have to wait until Thursday after the meet was postponed with the 800 relay, 1600 relay, 200, 400, and 300 hurdles still unfinished. The Full Automatic Timing (FAT) system stopped working twice during the meet. The first time, it caused a delay of almost an hour.

The meet will resume at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday and run alongside the Northern Lake County Conference boys meet.

As of Wednesday, Huntley was in the lead with 66 points, Harlem was in second with 53 points, and Belvidere North (40) was third. DeKalb is in sixth place with 23 points.

CHICAGO – Has Avisail Garcia turned a corner, or is the 25-year-old right fielder’s encouraging – and surprising – first 30 games of 2017 fool’s gold?

White Sox staff and scouts alike want to see continuing genuine improvement. But they like what they’ve seen so far in what is viewed as a make-or-break season for Garcia.

“They gave him a full, clean slate to be an everyday right fielder,” first base coach Daryl Boston said, “and he’s taken it and run with it.”

Despite a run of two hits in his past 16 at-bats, which has the appearance of an expected regression all have been looking for after he blazed his way into Player of the Month consideration for April, Garcia has a .336/.380/.531 hitting line with a .911 OPS. He has five homers and 24 RBIs. Tips of the cap have come from coaches, management, scouts and even fans. It’s encouraging, to say the least, for a 6-foot-4, 240-pound physical specimen who came from the Tigers in the Jake Peavy trade in 2013. But people want to see more.

“Muscle weighs more than fat,” Thomas said. “He took care of his body this year, and he feels good.

“I mean, I’m feeling good, feeling great,” Garcia said. “Trying to do better every year, trying to play hard and do my best to help my team.

“In the outfield, I’m focused. Anticipating the play. That’s what I have to do.”

Renteria has promoted Garcia to the fourth spot in recent days, which Garcia shrugs off as no big deal. He was penciled in fourth for Wednesday’s rained out game against the Twins.

“Doesn’t matter to me,” he said.

“It doesn’t change my approach – it’s the same. Do my best and try to get on base for my team.”

Sox, Twins rained out: The rained out game against the Twins will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader Aug. 21, a Monday.

The rainout doesn’t affect the pitching rotation. Left-hander Derek Holland, scheduled to start Wednesday, will pitch Thursday against the Twins’ Phil Hughes with Miguel Gonzalez, Dylan Covey and Jose Quintana facing the Padres this weekend at home.

The makeup doubleheader will begin at 4:10 p.m. Aug. 21.

Cubs limp into series against Cards

DENVER – This is not a playoff team.

The Cubs are a .500, third-place team as they take a day off ahead of their weekend series against the division-leading Cardinals – having lost five of their past six games and three of their past four series.

Their once-vaunted fielding has been suspect. Their once-dominant starting pitching has been inconsistent. Their leadoff man is batting .195 and leads the team in strikeouts.

On one hand, there’s a lot of time left this season for the defending World Series champs to get things right.

On the other hand, it’s starting to get a little late to say it’s still early.

A playoff team? They way they’ve looked so far, dropping to 17-17 after Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to rookie German Marquez and the Rockies at Coors Field?

“I don’t think so,” said righthander Kyle Hendricks, who was tagged with the loss despite pitching well into the seventh inning. “It’s not clear-cut. I wouldn’t say we are, and if we were to get in the playoffs right now the way we’re playing it wouldn’t go too well.”

If there’s reason for Cubs optimism for what’s on the 2017 horizon, Hendricks (2-2) might be one of the bigger reasons.

The only runs he allowed Wednesday were an unearned run in the fourth on Javy Baez’s fielding error at shortstop and two runs that scored after he left the game in the seventh – when Marquez inexplicably got his

“That’s just one of those non-fortuitous moments,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who said it shouldn’t have mattered what pitch was thrown.

“That guy can’t hit.”

If there was a fortuitous part of the game for the Cubs, it was Hendricks – last year’s major-league ERA leader – who said he felt closer to last year’s form Wednesday than he has all sea-

son.

After struggling early, he has a 1.52 ERA in his past four starts.

That start followed John Lackey’s seven-inning scoreless start in Tuesday night’s victory in the second game of a doubleheader. It’s the first set of back-to-back quality starts for the Cubs since Brett Anderson (now on the disabled list) and Hendricks did it April 24 and 25.

“At least over these last two games, seeing the way the bullpen threw and seeing Lack last night, hopefully we

can start getting deep in games and really take it on the pitching staff,” Hendricks said, “and start setting a precedent for the rest of the team.”

Until then, the starters drag a 4.56 rotation ERA into St. Louis after returning their top four starters from a group that led the majors with a 2.96 collective ERA last year.

They also leave Colorado with a streak of five consecutive games allowing at least one unearned run (eight total in the five games) – just the latest shaky stretch for a group of fielders that lapped the majors in nearly every defensive metric last year, including defensive runs saved.

“We may not pitch that good (as in 2016), but I know we’re going to pitch better than we have to this point,” Maddon said. “We may not play defense to that level, but we’re still going to play really good defense, and it’s still going to be good enough.

We’ve just got to get back closer to the levels that we’re capable of.”

The Cubs had a well-documented short offseason and consequently planned for a slow-burn buildup in spring training. They had emotional banner and ring ceremonies the second week of the season and a more recent gauntlet of rain delays and postponements, an 18-inning game Sunday and back-to-back series against hot, first-place teams.

“We’ve had some elements and some factors bothering us a little bit,” Hendricks said. “But there’s no excuses. This is our job, and we’ve got to play. We’ve just got to tighten everything up, really all-around.

“There’s a level of urgency in here.”

White Sox aversion to trading with Cubs makes sense Conventional wisdom holds that the White Sox will never make a big trade with the Cubs, despite what Sox general manager Rick Hahn is saying to the contrary. Most people with even a passing familiarity with Jerry Reinsdorf think the chairman would rather pull out his own teeth than do anything that could benefit the franchise’s crosstown rival.

That might seem incredibly shortsighted, even petty. The idea is to help your team, and if a trade offers what you believe is a clear path to success, you should jump on it.

And, yet, I get it. I completely understand if the idea of helping the

It should.

The two franchises are in different leagues (in more ways than one), but they compete against one another for fans, for media attention, for advertisers, for the air they breathe. Why would the Sox do something that might put them even farther behind in the battle for hearts?

The Sox have been accused of

having an unhealthy preoccupation with the Cubs, possibly because they are unhealthily preoccupied with the Cubs. But if the Sox make a deal and end up looking like losers, it’s a double whammy. Not just a mistake but a mistake that hurts business in town by benefiting the Cubs.

The North Siders could use some pitching help. I know: It’s early!

There’s no reason to worry about with the defending World Series champions! Nothing to see here! But Jake Arrieta is off to a rough start, as are a few other Cubs pitchers, and it’s never too soon to shore up what could become a serious problem later. The

Sox might be willing to move Jose Quintana for the right price. Just not to the Cubs.

Understand the mindset here. It’s the mindset of an organization and a fan base that feels it has been treated like second-class citizens for decades in Chicago. The White Sox are the kid from the other side of the tracks, the kid who wants to be somebody but keeps bumping up against a blue ceiling. Even after the Sox won the World Series in 2005, there was a sentiment on the South Side that they didn’t get their due. It certainly didn’t help last year when ESPN forgot to include the

Ovechkin, Caps come up short in Game 7 again

WASHINGTON – Marc-Andre Fleury thanked his stick and flashed a smile so wide it could be seen through his mask.

This was vintage Fleury, and he has the Pittsburgh Penguins one step closer to another Stanley Cup. Fleury stopped all 29 shots in a turnback-the-clock performance to shut out the Washington Capitals 2-0 in Game 7 on Wednesday night, sending Pittsburgh to the Eastern Conference finals to face the Ottawa Senators.

This was the Fleury who backstopped the Penguins to the Cup in 2009 and was almost unbeatable early in the second-round series, and his return was all they needed to eliminate the Presidents’ Trophy winners in a meeting of the NHL’s top two teams.

“We’re not in this position moving on if he doesn’t play the way he did,” said captain Sidney Crosby, who assisted on Bryan Rust’s opening goal.

“There were times where they had sustained pressure throughout games and he made some big saves that allowed us to stay in the game and allowed us

That wasn’t an “oops’’ in the minds of some Sox fans. It was proof of invisibility.

From a sober, clear-thinking business standpoint, not dancing with the Cubs is dumb. If Theo Epstein comes offering prospects from the club’s talented minor-league system, wouldn’t that fit in with the youth movement the White Sox are trying to push?

But Reinsdorf is human. I’m sure he had trouble understanding the Cubs’ allure when they were bad for so many years, and now that they’re champions, the mere thought of helping them win another title must make him ill.

In everything the Sox do, they measure themselves against the Cubs.

How many column inches they get in the newspaper. Why the local sportscasts are favoring the Cubs. Whether City Hall loves both teams equally.

That’s why the Sox don’t like to put themselves in a situation where they could look bad down the line, could lose face. I don’t want to make them sound like North Korea, but I guess I just did.

Fleury thought it was the Penguins’ best team game of the playoffs, a theory that teammates and coach Mike Sullivan echoed. They were again outshot as they were in every game of the series, this time only 29-28, but Rust and Patric Hornqvist scored on Braden Holtby, and Fleury shut the door.

The last big trade the Sox made with the Cubs involved sending Sammy Sosa to the North Side in 1992 for George Bell. I believe Reinsdorf has filed that under Lessons Learned. Sosa went on to hit 545 home runs for the Cubs and filled up Wrigley Field year after year. Even if you can’t get past the stink of steroids that has followed him everywhere, you have to agree that the Cubs got the better of the deal and that the Sox looked silly. Since then, the two teams have traded with each other twice.

The idea that Reinsdorf would be willing to deal Quintana so that Hahn can continue his soft rebuild seems contrary to the chairman’s nature.

Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer, with a career 3.52 earned-run average to go with 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings, has been mentioned as a logical candidate to help the Cubs’ pitching. They would be wise to spend their time looking at him and anybody else not named “Jose Quintana.’’ Working out the parameters of a trade only to be snorted at by Reinsdorf seems like the definition of wasted time.

For his part, Reinsdorf would do better to channel his competitiveness in other directions. Perhaps by blowing up the Bulls and hiring some people who know how to build a team.

Come to think of it, that’s another thing that’s not going to happen.

It was as complete a game as Pittsburgh has had through two rounds, even though it was without injured defenseman Trevor Daley and winger Carl Hagelin. Crosby looked like himself again in his third game back from a concussion, and the rest of the team followed.

“They just always find a way to respond the right way to any of the

challenges or the adversities that this league throws at us, and they did it again tonight,” Sullivan said. “I think these guys are at their best when the stakes are high. ... I thought that was the closest thing to the Penguins identity that we’ve seen in the playoffs so far.”

It was far from Capitals hockey, which was on display in victories in Games 5 and 6. Chances came and went as Washington failed to get beyond the second round for the seventh time in as many chances in the Alex Ovechkin era.

“Without goals, you can’t win the game,” said Ovechkin, who played the seventh-most of any Capitals forward at 18:22 and was on the ice for each goal. “Plenty of chance to score. Just didn’t do it. Made a couple mistakes, and it cost us.”

Mistakes by Ovechkin and defensemen Matt Niskanen and Kevin Shattenkirk in clearing the puck out of the defensive zone led to Rust’s goal 8:49 into the second and Hornqvist’s 4:14 into the third. Ovechkin had one of the Capitals’ best scoring chances of the game from the slot, and his shot went off the shaft of Fleury’s stick.

DeKalb man facing cancer finds comfort in art, trains

larke Renard, 60, has made a lot of sacrifices since his August cancer diagnosis; his 30-year lawn care business is in the hands of family members, and he can’t travel or get around like he used to.

The DeKalb resident is no stranger to patience, however. His lifelong fascination with trains has fostered an appreciation for detail that has stayed with him even during his toughest days of treatment.

This focus and patience can be seen in Renard’s recently discovered artistic talent.

He blends and smooths the colors with a sock or an old wash rag, creating bright orange sunsets, green foliage and detailed train cars and engines.

Renard keeps some pictures framed at home, while others are on display at the Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center in Geneva, where he first discovered his affinity for coloring.

Sarah Kendra, a social worker at the center, said she offered Renard’s wife an adult coloring book as a way to cope with stress. His wife got through half a picture before deciding it wasn’t for her, but Renard said he found coloring peaceful, and it keeps him active while he is unable to tend to his business, Clarke’s Total Lawn Care in DeKalb.

“This is the book that originally kicked it off that made me realize I had some sort of a talent,” Renard said, pointing out an intricate design he drew freehand on a calico cat picture and other pages brought to life with colored pencil.

After learning of Renard’s new interest in coloring, a friend from Texas offered to print 18-by-24-inch black-and-white copies of his photos and send them to him.

cancer center, said she saw Renard’s artwork while giving him treatment and contacted a local framing company about getting them properly displayed.

“I saw how excited he was about his art, and I wished I could do something, so I got the idea to put his pictures up in the cancer center,” Mitchel said.

Kendra said this is the center’s first display of artwork from a patient.

“It was something special we wanted to do for Clarke,” Kendra said.

Renard said his interest in trains and collecting models began when he was a teenager. Over the years, he

has participated in hobby train clubs in Elgin and Chadwick in addition to keeping his own collection at home.

Though model train parts can be expensive, they are “worth every penny to me,” Renard said.

“I’ll never work for the railroad, but when you have the scale trains, you’re the engineer; you’re the conductor,” he said. “You get to stop, ring the bell; you’re in control.”

Nowadays, Renard spends his down time sitting in his living room chair watching train DVDs and working on his coloring, which takes him two to

two-and-a-half hours for each picture.

Sometimes he’ll take a coloring book with him to chemotherapy, but the larger pieces stay at home.

He can no longer drive a car or hop on a lawn mower, but he has friends that will drive him out to watch trains on some weekends. And colored prints of houses with freshly trimmed lawns he has provided remind him of his passion for his business.

“I enjoyed my job all my life; I looked forward to it every day,” Renard said. “I love my job. I love my hobby. I love my wife and my kids.”

Renard has given a couple pictures away to supportive friends and is looking to sell some in the future. He said the outpouring of support from his lawn care customers, community members, friends and family has been amazing and brought him to tears several times.

“Dual Exhibition: Paintings by Destiny Stroud & Ryan Lindsey” will be featured at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center Gallery through May 26.

Viewing is available from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays and by appointment at 815-758-1351.

Destiny Stroud has been studying art for about a year now but plans to pursue a master’s degree in art therapy and minor in visual communication. Stroud says her artwork typically portrays an abstract of her emotions or an impression of what she finds beautiful.

Nature and the human body are her main inspirations. She doesn’t have a distinct style since she is continuously learning and experimenting, but her main medium is acrylic.

Ryan Lindsey has been painting for about four years now. He is pursuing an arts education degree at the College of DuPage and will graduating this semester.

He says his paintings are primarily influenced by Impressionism. He is motivated by seeing the outdoors and recreating it but enhancing the colors, making it vibrant and larger than life.

His style is quick and sloppy, making sure to reveal the brush strokes to

give the paintings a charming appeal.

The DeKalb Area Women’s Center is located at 1021 State St. in DeKalb, four blocks north of Lincoln Highway.

The Kishwaukee Concert Band will present its Season 15 Finale Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Northern Illinois University Music Building in DeKalb.

Deb Shofner will direct the concert. She is a retired band director and an accomplished tuba player. She will present “Scenes of Wonder,” by Mark Williams. It is a three-movement piece, each movement expressing the different emotions felt when visiting certain scenes in Europe. “Punchinello,” by Alfred Reed, is a romantic comedy for concert band. It is a very difficult and energy-driven piece. “Sunburst,” written by Erik Morales, depicts the awe-inspiring moments after a thunderstorm.

Dave Lehman will be the oboe soloist on “Gabriel’s Oboe” from the movie “The Mission.”

Lehman is a retired music director from DeKalb School District 428 and a well-known oboe player in the area. He also is co-director of the

KCB and directs the local Jazz in Progress group.

“Tango for Band” by Glenn Osser will have toes tapping with the Latin rhythms. Robert Sheldon’s “The Red Covered Bridge” has a local flavor to it. The bridge is a local attraction in Princeton, Illinois, and served as the inspiration for this lyrical serene composition.

No concert would be complete without a march from John Phillip Sousa. “Manhattan Beach” is one of Sousa’s most popular marches, written as a theme song for his summer concerts at Manhattan Beach Resort.

The concert will conclude with the “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Kishwaukee Concert Band is made up of volunteer members older than 18 who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past, and enjoy playing. Rehearsals are held at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:15. p.m. No auditions are necessary.

NIU Community School offers summer music lessons DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts offers a variety of summer programs for children and adults.

Music classes, ensembles, private lessons and workshops begin in June and run through the end of July. All classes and lessons are taught on the campus of NIU. NIU Percussion Workshop

Join world-class NIU percussion faculty, alumni and students for a five-day workshop exploring the world of percussion. Students perform in concert percussion ensembles, samba bands and steel drum ensembles, participate in classes on snare drum, drum set, timpani and keyboard percussion, attend faculty recitals, and more. This workshop meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lunch, door prizes and T-shirts provided, and a final concert for parents and friends. Workshop dates are July 24 to 28.

Private lessons are available on many musical instruments, including violin, piano and guitar, as well as banjo, steelpan, flute, saxophone, voice and more. CSA teachers include NIU students and faculty, as well as experienced community-based artists.

Music Classes for Young Children

Prelude Class (ages 1 to 3) is a group class with lots of fun for kids and parents. Class activities include music listening, creative movement, songs and lap games.

Development Class (ages 3 to 5) builds on the material learned in Prelude Class, adding musical patterns and skills through games, songs, creative movement, percussion instruments, basic music theory, and learning about some of the instruments of the orchestra. A parent must accompany the child to each class.

Both classes meet on six Saturdays beginning June 24 (no class on July 8). Prelude begins at 10 a.m. and Development begins at 10:35 a.m. Traditional and Suzuki violin instructor, music educator and Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra member Laurie Rodriguez teaches both classes.

Piano Starter

Children explore the instrument in a fun, smallgroup setting, learning basic notes and playing simple tunes. For parents, this class is an opportunity to see if your child is ready for private lessons. No previous musical experience is required for this class. Information about the book parents are asked to purchase will be emailed prior to the first class meeting on June 6. This class meets on six Tuesdays from 4 to 4:40 p.m. (no class meeting July 4 or 18), is limited to four students, and early registration is recommended.

Music Classes for Kids and Adults

Guitar for Kids provides children age 8 to 12 with

an introduction to guitar playing through a fun, song-oriented approach to learning.

Guitar Basics is a beginning class for age 13 to adult where students learn to read music, play songs, and construct and play scales and chords, in addition to learning about music theory and exploring various styles of guitar techniques.

In Intermediate Guitar, students develop different styles of playing, continue to learn music theory, and build more advanced playing techniques. These group guitar classes meet for six Wednesdays beginning June 14 (no class meeting July 5). See the website for meeting times. Instructor Quentin Dover is an accomplished guitar player and teacher, with many years of experience working with students of all ages, both privately and in a group setting.

Adult Piano is a beginning group piano class for ages 13 to adult. Bring the joy of piano music to your life and enjoy getting to know fellow musicians in this beginning class. Students learn simple tunes and basic skills such as reading music and chords.

Every student plays on a keyboard in a piano classroom. Adult Piano class meets for six Tuesdays beginning June 6 (no class meeting July 4 and 18) from 6 to 6:45 p.m. CSA piano and harp instructor Jaina Krueger teaches this popular class.

Qi Gong (or Chi-Kung) is a precursor of Tai Chi. For ages 12 to adult, this class will focus on 24 postures divided into three sets. These exercises can be done at one time during a day or interspersed amid practice sessions, rehearsals, etc. to renew your energy, release tension, and enable greater relaxation and concentration when practiced immediately before a performance. Taught by Eric Schroeder, this

class meets for six Mondays starting June 12 (no class on July 3) from 6 to 6:55 p.m.

Ensembles

NIUkulele Ensemble is a fun group designed for beginning and intermediate ukulele players ages 9 to adult. Students learn to play melodies, chords and songs in many styles, and to perform solo, in unison and in harmony. Beginners receive instruction on the ukulele and players with more experience are assigned more challenging parts. Associate level guitar teacher Eric Schroeder directs the group, bringing his many years of experience teaching private and group lessons to the ensemble. Group rehearsals begin June 12 for six Mondays from 7 to 7:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 3) with a concert in the Recital Hall on the final night.

CSA Guitar Ensemble provides an opportunity for guitarists to play together in an ensemble setting while gaining confidence and skill on the instrument. Designed for beginning and intermediate players age 14 to adult, the group meets for six Wednesdays beginning June 14 from 8 to 8:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 5). On the final night, a recital is scheduled at 8 p.m. CSA guitar instructor Quentin Dover is the ensemble director.

The NIU Community School of the Arts offers year-round programming in music and the arts.

You don’t have to completely cut out beef. But use it sparingly, more as a side dish rather than the main event. Lose the sunflower, canola and corn oils and use olive oil instead. Satisfy your sweet tooth with strawberries, cherries, raspberries, apples or blueberries. When you need a snack, swap out that bag of potato chips for a handful of almonds or walnuts.

While it’s never too late to change your diet for the better, research here at UCLA suggests it can’t be done too soon. According to the findings of a recent study, women who ate a diet high in inflammatory foods during their adolescent years had a statistically greater risk of developing pre-menopausal breast cancer as adults. The thinking is chronic inflammation associated with diet contributed to the increase in breast cancer risk.

The research into inflammation and diet has good news, too. Participants in a clinical trial at Ohio State University who ate an anti-inflammatory diet high in fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains did better on bone density tests than did their chips- and sugar-eating counterparts.

How to move forward? There’s no shortage of books and cookbooks devoted to anti-inflammatory eating. Grab your library card and hit the stacks – the results will be both healthful and delicious.

Dear Doctors: Can the food we eat affect chronic inflammation in the body?

Dear Reader: In our previous column, we addressed the first half of a two-part question about inflammation – what it is, and how it can be affected by diet. In answering the first half of the question, we discussed the two main types of inflammation and how they take place.

To (briefly) recap: Inflammation is the body’s immune response to a perceived threat. Acute inflammation, a short-lived reaction to injury, trauma or infection, causes swelling, redness, and a sensation of heat and pain. Chronic inflammation, a low-level reaction, takes place below the threshold of pain.

As a result, it tends to fly under the radar.

But unlike acute inflammation, which abates when the threat has been neutralized, chronic inflammation continues. It has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.

Does what we eat have an effect on chronic inflammation? Research shows yes, components of certain foods can activate the inflammatory response, and others inhibit it.

Unfortunately, many staples of the modern diet encourage inflammation. Refined carbohydrates and processed foods such as chips, sodas, sugary breakfast cereals, lunch meats, fried foods, red meat, candy bars, breakfast pastries and that addictive blended mocha with a swirl of whipped cream all have an inflammatory effect.

Foods that combat inflammation are high in natural antioxidants and contain polyphenols, which are beneficial compounds found in plants. These include: • dark leafy greens such as spinach, collard greens and kale; • vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli; • beans, which are high in fiber and antioxidants; • whole grains, which are high in fiber and help with inflammation; and

Dear Abby: We DEAR ABBY have some great friends we have Jeanne known for five Phillips years. Our families enjoy time together, and although the friendship started through our kids, I now get together with the other mom outside of kid-related activities.

Her son, “Michael,” and my daughter (ages 12) are best friends in middle school, and I truly care for him, as well as his family.

I have assumed for a long time Michael is gay. Since late last year, he’s been having a lot of trouble with a certain group of boys who call him gay – among other names – and bully him.

His mom knows he is different, but his dad is deep in denial, doing his best to force his son to associate with this group of kids because they are “jocks” and popular. Michael hangs out with and is most comfortable with girls. It has always been this way, in spite of his parents’ attempts to find him a boy group to fit into.

The bullying is escalating and, while his dad remains in denial, his mom is telling Michael to ignore it and not draw attention to himself for fear it may get worse.

I’m scared for the boy. He is the always-smiling, happy-go-lucky kid on the outside, but there’s no way he can be feeling that way on the inside being on the receiving end of this kind of abuse every day. I have encouraged his mom to talk to school authorities, but she refuses. We have never spoken directly about the possibility Michael may be gay because I can feel the fear and denial in what she isn’t saying. What can I do? – His B.F.F.’s Mom Dear Mom: It is tragic that Michael’s parents can’t accept their son for who he is, rather than who they would like him to be. That’s why it is absolutely vital you befriend that boy to the best of your ability. Contact PFLAG (pflag.org) and request information about how to support a young person who is more than likely LGBT. Let the boy know you love him just the way he is and being different isn’t wrong. If you do, it could mean the difference between life and death – and that’s no exaggeration.

In today’s deal, look first at the East hand. With both sides vulnerable, the dealer on your right opens one spade. Would you pass, make a takeout double or overcall one notrump?

Then look at the North hand.

With the opponents maintaining a respectful silence, you open one spade, and partner responds one forcing no-trump, showing 6-12 points. (He will have three spades only with 10-12 points.) What would you rebid?

This deal was played 16 times at Bridge Base Online. Surprisingly, no East, human or robot, entered the auction, which was a losing pass here because East-West were cold for five hearts. (If you do bid, I think one notrump is better than double. I dislike takeout doubles with 4-3-3-3 shape.)

At numerous tables, North rebid two spades, and South continued with three diamonds, which ended the auction.

One North, who requested anonymity, did not like the quality of his spade suit, so rebid two clubs, which promised only three cards in the suit, but then his hand would normally have had 5=2=3=3 or 5=3=2=3 distribution. After South rebid two diamonds, North kept up his good work by passing -- and getting the only North-South plus score!

The play was not testing. South lost one spade, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. The seventh diamond was protection against being tapped in hearts.
