SYCAMORE – Sycamore High School students could have options for what time they have to arrive at school in the morning starting in the 2018-19 school year.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman said a committee including the high school’s Spartan Senate, parents and board members will meet to develop flexible schedule options that students would be able to choose from based on their needs and obligations.

Staggered start times for all district schools were discussed during previous board meetings as part of the district’s effort to reduce riding times for students who take the bus to school.

Countryman said district officials have changed focus after receiving parent feedback and now are looking into the possibility of giving high school students choices on their start and dismissal times.

“The goal we have as a district is to customize learning for kids,” she said.

Students could shift their school days earlier or later and take evening classes to better suit their work and extra-curricular schedules, she said.

Countryman provided an update on planning for the committee during Tuesday’s board meeting.

Board member Kris Wrenn said students would be able to better adjust to what their schedules will be like in college.

“I think it’s exciting because it probably more closely mirrors what their next step is for college-bound kids, and I think sometimes we do a disservice by keeping an 8-to-3 kind of school day,” she said.

Sycamore High School Principal Tim Carlson said schedule options would be helpful for students who have to work to support their families or those who partake in after-school activities.

For example, SpartanTV students will sometimes work in the studio as late as 10 p.m., and starting school later the next day might be a better option for them, Carlson said.

Countryman said the district would be seeking input from students, teachers, parents and community members as well as looking into how transportation would work with the varied schedules.

“This is a big project for us at the high school to do together, but I think it’s one that we are fully embracing,” she said.

RICHLAND, Wash. – A portion of an underground tunnel containing rail cars filled with radioactive waste collapsed Tuesday at a sprawling storage facility in a remote area of Washington state, forcing an evacuation of some workers at the site that made plutonium for nuclear weapons for decades after World War II. Officials detected no release of radiation at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and no workers were injured, said Randy Bradbury, a spokesman for the Washington state Department of Ecology.

No workers were inside the tunnel when it collapsed, causing soil on the surface above to sink 2 to 4 feet over a 400-square-foot area, officials said.

The tunnels are hundreds of feet long, with about 8 feet of soil covering them, the U.S. Department of Energy said.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

It was discovered as part of a routine inspection and occurred during a massive cleanup that has been underway since the 1980s and costs more than $2 billion a year. The work is expected to take until 2060 and cost more than $100 billion.

Hanford officials said they were studying the area of the collapse to determine how to create a barrier between the contaminated equipment in the tunnel and the outside air.

Workers near the site were evacuated and hundreds of others farther away were told to remain indoors for several hours, the federal agency said.

Nonessential workers among the labor force of 9,000 at the site were sent home early along a safe route.

University Village units get new appliances, repairs, safety upgrades

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The inspector of the 534 units of the mostly low-income University Village housing community said Tuesday that residents should look forward to improvements.

“It’s going to be a brand-new life for them,” said Don Plass, an inspector with the McHenry-based HR Green engineering firm, which is overseeing inspections that started Friday and are expected to run through July.

Construction, handled by Chicago-based Weis Builders, has begun and is expected to last through March, city officials have said.

Plass said the apartments’ kitchen cabinets will be removed, and the units could get air conditioning, as well as new water heaters, refrigerators and ranges. Water damage repairs could be in the works, too, depending on the amount of deterioration in the kitchen and bathrooms.

The master plan of the project calls for installation of new flooring, cabinets, countertops, sinks and doors, as well as repainting.

“When residents move back into the apartments, they will be extremely clean and totally safe,” Plass said. “The biggest thing is that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and portable fire extinguishers are up to code, and where the apartment dweller can get to them.”

Two units will be worked on at a time, and unit upgrades are expected to have a five-day turnaround time.

Tenants will be relocated to hospitality units on the grounds until the work is complete, Plass said.

In addition to representatives from HR Green, local architect Lisa Sharp and a fire prevention officer are on hand during the inspections to weed out any building code violations.

Last year, Seattle-based Security Properties Inc. acquired University Village with the intent to secure $55 million in bonds to pay for rehabilitation of the property.

Plass said one of the problems noticed within inspected buildings is drywall and insulation issues. To solve this, contractors are using a draft-stopping material to prevent a potential fire from spreading into neighboring units.

Plass commended the work that had been done on the insulation in units being upgraded.

“Some people had been waiting for necessary things, and we have been able to get to people’s immediate needs relatively quickly,” Charlton said. “Why we’re doing the individual inspections is to make sure we have found all of the issues and not just a small, defined list of things that would’ve been otherwise utilized.”

In addition to improving individual

units, there also are plans to increase security and expand the site’s community center.

The community center’s work is expected to take 90 days, ending in August, and additional on-site work is expected to be finished in July, according to the master plan.

Plass said he has not yet approved any of the parking, lighting and signage aspects of the construction, but final inspections on some of the finished apartments is expected to begin Thursday.

“Repairing 534 units is going to take a long time, but the way the whole action plan is set up and the little pieces of the project we will have as we go along, it should go very well, and it’s going to be quite an improvement for that complex,” Plass said.

According to the master plan of the project, the duration of the overall scheduled construction is expected to be 245 days starting from the pre-construction phase, which concluded at the end of March.

Victim testifies in attempted-murder case Daughter and her boyfriend take stand on 1st day of trial

SYCAMORE – Elena Mora Gomez said she realized Nicholle Martinez was the person slashing at her throat when she heard the voice.

“She said, ‘Oh, you don’t want to die?’” Mora testified in DeKalb County Court through an interpreter, “and she continued to attack me. I kept thinking of my girls, who would be alone.

“I wouldn’t let her cut me anymore.”

Mora was the first person to take the stand in the attempted murder and aggravated battery trial of Martinez, 44, of the 1800 block of Kerrybrook Court in Sycamore. Martinez showed little emotion as Mora talked about what happened to her on the night of Sept. 27, 2014.

Mora said it was a rare night because Nicholle’s husband, Luis Martinez, didn’t drive Mora back to her apartment in the 1300 block of Sycamore Road in DeKalb after her shift at Taco Bell in Sycamore. Luis Martinez was and remains Mora’s supervisor at the restaurant, and they began a relationship in 2008, Mora said.

Mora testified that before she could get out of her car, she was struck “very hard” in the head, yet she fended off Martinez with one arm while trying to honk the horn to alert the oldest of her three daughters, who was sleeping inside.

Mora’s daughter, Anayeli Victoria, and her boyfriend, J Magandy Montero, testified that Victoria was awakened by the sound of a woman screaming, and she woke up Montero, and together they ran out to find a person wearing gloves and a mask with a box cutter pinning Mora against the rear driver’s side tire.

Montero testified that he kicked Martinez, punched her and put her in a headlock, at which point her mask came off. He said he recognized her and asked why she did it.

“She told me I already know why she did it,” Montero said.

Mora also admitted that she has used a fake Social Security number to work at Taco Bell.

Tuesday was the first day of a trial that’s not expected to take more than three days, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert said.

The jury, made up of 11 women and a man, was shown pictures of Mora’s injuries which were taken in an emergency room – a gash under both of her ears, her left eyebrow swollen and bleeding.

In his opening statement, Blumenfeld conceded that the attack happened, but said that Martinez didn’t intend to kill Mora. He told the jury about Martinez’s cancer diagnosis earlier in 2014, about her surgeries and about how she went off her anti-anxiety medication, Xanax, three days before the attack.

William L. Dickey, 91, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Monday, May 8, 2017, at Kishwaukee Hospital.

Born May 2, 1926, in Fairfield, Illinois, the son of Harry and Bessie (Bethel) Dickey, William married Mildred Shaw. William was a veteran of the United States Army Air Forces having served during World War II. He was the former owner of Dickey Construction and Dickey Real Estate.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, Michael (Desiree) Dickey; daughter, Diane (Brian) Johnson; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; one stepson; one stepdaughter; and three step-great-granddaughters.

Private interment of cremated remains will be at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion Post 66.

With one foot holding onto the rope, the other balancing on a water ski, and both arms bracing the women beside her, Ali Alsup had done her part to complete the final trick in an attempt to break the record.

“That’s when all the tears started,” she said. “We knew we completed it.”

Alsup, 29, of Genoa, was one of 48 women to team up and break the record for most ballet water-skiers pulled by a single boat April 22 on Lake Ariana in Auburndale, Florida.

The number to beat was 40.

“We attempted to break the record with 50, but two girls fell,” Alsup said.

More than 300 people tried to break 44 different records during the fiveday water-skiing event called Chain of Records.

Alsup said she and her sister took part in the attempt, while her father and husband helped out on the boat.

In addition to feeding her competitive side, Alsup said show skiing also is a bonding experience for her family.

“It’s one of the few sports I can do as an adult with my family,” she said.

Alsup said she has been involved in the sport for 15 years, and she and members of her family have been on

the Ski Broncs team in Rockford for six years.

Alsup’s son, now 3, was on water skis at 18 months old, she said.

Guinness World Records had many people on hand for the event, from judges to a safety crew. Their presence, along with the effort lead-

ing up to the event, “created a lot of jitters” for Alsup and fellow skiers from around the world.

“It felt so surreal to break a record on first try, to ski with the best of the best,” she said.

Guinness is in the process of approving the record, she said.

On Tuesday, May 16, Alma Ruth Schweitzer of DeKalb will turn 100 years of age. She was born on May 16, 1917, to Thomas and Anna Knudtson of Waterman. Alma married Robert Schweitzer of DeKalb on January 10, 1941. They farmed in the Waterman and DeKalb areas for many years.

Bob and Alma were happily married for 61 years.

Alma has four children: Patricia ( Jim) Newell of Rockford; Paul (Mary) Schweitzer of DeKalb; Kurt (Karen) Schweitzer of DeKalb; and Kenn (Patti) Schweitzer of Sycamore. She has 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Alma’s family will all gather on Mother’s Day to celebrate her very special birthday and Mother’s Day with her.

Blumenfeld told the jury the rock with which Martinez struck Mora was evidence she didn’t have a plan.

She improvised, he said.

Martinez, who worked as a lab technician at Valley West Hospital, has five children. She is a graduate of Northern Illinois University.

She testified in February 2015 that she told police, “I attacked her,” before officer Chris Sullivan read her her Miranda rights, at which point she said she thought she needed a lawyer.

DeKalb Detective Mark Nachman interviewed her at the station, court records show. Sullivan and Nachman both are expected to be called as witnesses in the trial.

Martinez was released from jail in May 2015 after her husband posted $50,000 bail. If convicted of attempted first-degree murder, she could face six to 30 years in prison.

She was born to Ira and Ina (Harris) Jones on January 8, 1923, the third of four daughters. She attended Big Rock schools graduating high school in 1941.

She was her father’s “right hand” on their livestock farm where she milked Shorthorns, raised Poland China hogs and cared for Dorset sheep. She showed all of them in 4-H at county and state fairs. In 1947 she and her dad started exhibiting their Shetland and Welsh ponies. The long hours of training led to many championships at numerous fairs throughout the Midwest.

Trump fires FBI’s Comey in midst of Russia probe

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey Tuesday, dramatically ousting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the midst of an FBI investigation into whether Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia’s meddling in the election that sent him to the White House.

In a letter to Comey, Trump said the firing was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the FBI. Comey has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for his public comments on an investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices, including a pair of letters he sent to Congress on the matter in the closing days of last year’s campaign.

Trump made no mention of Comey’s role in the Clinton investigation, which she has blamed in part for the election result. But in announcing the firing, the White House circulated a scathing memo, written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, criticizing Comey’s handling of the Clinton probe, including the director’s decision to hold a news conference announcing its findings and releasing “derogatory information” about Clinton.

Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the bureau’s Trump-Russia probe, Rosenstein, his deputy, has been in charge.

This is only the second firing of an FBI director in history. President Bill Clinton dismissed William Sessions amid allegations of ethical lapses in 1993.

Democrats slammed Trump’s action, comparing it to President Richard Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” decision to fire the independent special prosecutor overseeing the Watergate investigation in 1973, which prompted the resignations of the Justice Department’s top two officials.

“This is Nixonian,” Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa.,

declared on Twitter. “Outrageous,” said Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, calling for Comey to immediately be summoned to testify to Congress about the status of the Trump-Russia investigation. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said the White House was “brazenly interfering” in the probe.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Congress must form a special committee to investigate Russia’s interference in the election.

Democrats expressed deep skepticism about the stated reasons for Tuesday’s firing, raising the prospect of a White House effort to stymie the investigations by the FBI and congressional panels.

Trump will now appoint Comey’s successor.

The White House said the search for a replacement was beginning immediately. Comey’s deputy, Andrew McCabe, would presumably take over in the interim.

Trump has ridiculed the investigations as a “hoax” and has denied that his campaign was involved in Russia’s meddling. In his letter to Comey, he asserted that the FBI director had informed him “on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.”

Tuesday’s stunning announcement came shortly after the FBI corrected aspects of Comey’s sworn testimony on Capitol Hill last week.

Comey told lawmakers that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, had sent “hundreds and thousands” of emails to her husband’s laptop, including some with classified information.

On Tuesday, the FBI told the Senate Judiciary Committee that only “a small number” of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices.

Most of the email chains on the laptop containing classified information were not the result of forwarding, the FBI said.

Sanctuary law will do more harm than good The Dallas Morning News has argued for years that Texas should not welcome or encourage illegal immigration. So we can understand why the “sanctuary city” bill that Gov. Greg Abbott recently signed into law sounds reasonable to so many.

Why shouldn’t law enforcement officers be able to ask people if they’re violating a law?

Here’s why this piece of legislation is a disaster that threatens to do more harm than good: It encourages unfair treatment of millions of law-abiding American citizens.

And instead of rooting out illegal activity, it could make the state a haven for more.

It’s disappointing that Abbott signed Senate Bill 4 into Texas law. Enforcing immigration law is a federal responsibility; local and state agencies should not be doing that job.

The law, which goes into effect Sept. 1, bans cities, counties and universities from prohibiting their local law enforcement officers from asking about immigration status and enforcing immigration law. Those who violate the ban pay a hefty price – up to $25,000 for each day they are in violation.

It also allows police officers to ask about a person’s immigration status during any legal detention, including routine traffic stops.

What’s so wrong with asking people for their papers to find out if they’re legal or not?

For starters, it invites racial profiling.

Abbott assured critics that this would not be the case: “Most of the people coming across the border in Texas are not from Mexico, they’re from around the entire globe.

So this has nothing whatsoever to do with those who are Hispanics.”

Forgive our skepticism; the reality is that this bill opens the door for widespread abuse.

This law also threatens to make communities less safe: If you are an unauthorized immigrant who is the victim of a crime, would you feel comfortable reporting it to local law enforcement, knowing you risk deportation as a result?

Criminals will bank on this fear and prey on this population, with virtual immunity. Driving victims to the shadows hurts the public safety of an entire community – creating an actual sanctuary for the lawless.

You didn’t hear about such unintended consequences of this look-tough bill from our governor. Abbott declared SB 4 an emergency in January; he signed it into law and said he meant business on keeping Texans safe.

What he didn’t mention were the dire consequences of a law that discriminates but doesn’t provide real solutions.

Instead of quick-fix, show-off regulations, we need a balanced approach to comprehensive immigration reform.

This is a federal problem that needs a federal solution – border security and guest-worker programs and a clear path to legal immigration.

While it’s on Texas’ books, we urge local law enforcement officials to develop clear guidelines, and to exercise restraint and human decency. We don’t want to become a state that preys on people who might look like immigrants, or encourages crime against the unprotected.

I consider children and the elderly to be “the least of these,” along with homeless veterans, victims of sexual violence and those who are sick (Jesus mentions them specifically).

Kinzinger stated that the bill he voted for “puts patients back in charge of their own health care.”

No it doesn’t, sir. If that bill becomes law, my son’s peanut allergy could be considered a pre-existing condition, and states and insurance agencies could deny him coverage or charge so much we can’t afford it.

Kinzinger was proud of a vote that endangers my son’s life.

And he, the president and their Republican allies laughed about it. They were celebrating.

To the Editor: My 8-year-old son has a peanut allergy. His life could be threatened if he ingests anything containing peanuts. To counteract that, we carry epinephrine with us wherever we go. It’s a bit of a cost burden because EpiPens aren’t cheap, but we’ve never had to worry that the medicine that could save my son’s life might not be available to us.

Until Thursday.

On Thursday, 217 Republicans voted to endanger my son’s life. They said “yes” to providing a $594 billion tax cut to the wealthy, rather than saying “yes” to saving lives.

What infuriates me most is the fact that many of them did it while embracing the National Day of Prayer. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, voted for the health bill and later tweeted this Bible verse: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

It infuriates me that congressmen, including Kinzinger, flaunt their Christian faith when it’s convenient, but when it’s time to actually act like Christ, they come up severely lacking.

published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Statistics released in 2014 by the Department of Education found that even in preschool, African-American children are significantly more likely to be suspended than white ones. We’re talking toddlers.

Understand the mindset that finds even little brown babies scary, and you understand Groubert’s sudden panic. He did not, I believe, act from conscious malice.

No, he acted as this country wired him to.

Not that he shouldn’t be held accountable for it. No, accountability is key. Without it, credibility is impossible.

Which explains the state of things between black people and the justice system.

Some white people pretend not to get this. Attempting to deflect cries of “Black lives matter!” they point to the gun carnage in urban Chicago or Miami and opine that black people should instead be protesting socalled “black on black” crime.

But when a black criminal shoots someone, he will, if caught, be held

to answer for it.

When a cop shoots an unarmed black person, he probably won’t.

Prosecutors decline to prosecute, grand juries decline to indict, juries decline to convict.

Now an officer has pleaded guilty, and yet a judge declines to judge.

Maybe there’s a reasonable explanation for that, although it’s hard to think of one, and the judge, who is black, had not returned my call by deadline.

Absent the explanation, one is inclined to consider this simply superfluous proof of systemic bias, a “justice” system that can never seem to find the gumption to punish its own when they mistreat people of color.

We are left to wonder when – if – we will see justice.

But can you imagine if the black motorist had shot the white cop?

You wouldn’t even have to ask.

Playing the election loss blame game “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.”

– John F. Kennedy SPRINGFIELD – I couldn’t help but think of these Kennedy remarks when I heard Hillary Clinton kvetching about why she lost the election.

Let’s see, she said it’s the FBI’s fault. Or maybe it’s the Russians.

I don’t have any problem believing that either one of those things could have cost her the election.

But to quote Democratic political strategist David Axelrod: “It takes a lot of work to lose to Donald Trump.”

After all, Trump is the least popular winner of a U.S. presidential race in modern times.

But neither FBI Director James Comey, nor the Russians, told Clinton to ignore Wisconsin or not put campaign resources into Michigan until the final week.

VIEWS Scott Reeder When I was a student at Galesburg High School, a basketball coach deflected blame for a loss from a teenager who missed the needed basket during final seconds of the game by pointing out that there were many baskets missed during the game.

He was right, of course.

There are many things that contribute to a loss.

Regular readers of this column know that I’m not fond of either Trump or Clinton.

Trump strikes me as a prevaricating braggart. Clinton, on the other hand, struggled to own up to her own mistakes and spoke condescendingly to broad swaths of the American

people.

While true leaders shouldn’t equivocate, ours is a political culture that nurtures narcissists incapable of meaningful self-blame, but all too willing to embrace self-pity.

It’s not a new phenomenon. Think of Richard Nixon’s 1962 post-defeat remarks to the political press corps, “You don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.” And in his biography, Nixon blamed Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev for tipping the 1960 presidential election away from him and to Kennedy. (It’s those dog-gone Russians again.)

Tricky Dick is hardly unique. After most elections I’ve covered, losers cast blame. And it’s rarely on themselves.

I remember after one Moline Democratic primary, a drunken loser cursed the voters for their ignorance in not choosing him. (After listening to that diatribe for several minutes, I had

to give those voters credit for being pretty smart.)

And, sometimes, would-be explanations border on excuses.

Take House Speaker Mike Madigan’s explanation for losing his super majority during the last election: “Republicans’ millions spent, coupled with the Trump headwind in downstate Illinois, created a difficult environment for many Democratic candidates.”

Funny I’ve yet to hear a losing politician say, “I guess the voters liked my opponent’s ideas better than mine.”

And we are in for a long wait before one does.

So when will there be justice for Levar Jones?

The question is occasioned by a reader’s recent request for an update on an incident I wrote about in 2014.

Jones, an unarmed African-American man, was shot by South Carolina State Trooper Sean Groubert during a routine traffic stop in Columbia.

Jones did nothing to merit this.

You know that if you’ve seen the dashcam video.

It shows Groubert, who is white, pulling up as Jones is exiting his car at a gas station. Groubert asks for his license. Jones reaches into his open vehicle to retrieve it. Groubert, in a panic, yells for him to get out of the car. Jones is complying when Groubert opens fire. “Get on the ground!” he yells, as Jones, hands raised, stumbles and falls.

“What did I do, sir?” he asks.

“Why did you shoot me?”

Groubert pleaded guilty to a charge of “assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature” in March 2016.

So when I checked for an update, I fully expected to find that he is now serving time.

SYCAMORE – For the time being, Sycamore sophomore Logan Riley will have to replace injured star Zach Carlsen as the Spartans’ shortstop and No. 2 hitter.

His first day on the job certainly went well.

Riley had a big game at the plate and saved a run with a diving stop as the Spartans put together their best offensive showing in a while Tuesday with a 7-4 win over Geneseo at Sycamore Park.

“I practice at short a lot during practice, so it’s not that big of a transition,” Riley said.

Riley, who is naturally a shortstop but usually plays third base next to Carlsen, went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and kept the Maple Leafs (19-6) from scoring a run in the top of the fourth.

With Sycamore leading 3-0, Geneseo had a runner on second base when Jordan Anderson hit a grounder up the middle with two outs, and Riley dove to get it and keep the runner on third.

Sycamore starter Jacob Cavanaugh followed that up by striking out Marshall Rice to end the threat.

“I think he’s playing a little out of position at third base,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said of Riley. “He has shortstop footwork, he’s always been a shortstop and that’s a good problem for us to have – we have two shortstops. Most teams don’t have any. ... I’ve coached a lot of teams in 24 years that didn’t have a shortstop, and you would run a kid out there and by the end of the year he was nicknamed ‘E6.’”

Carlsen injured his left wrist during a play in a game Monday against Batavia and said that he hopefully would be able to return before the regular season is over.

Sycamore (21-6) got plenty of production from the top of the order, along with Riley. Leadoff hitter Austin Mereness went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, leading off the game with a triple on the first pitch he saw and closing out his performance with a critical two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Spartans a 7-3 advantage after No. 9 hitter

Kyle Pittenger) would try and get me with a fastball,” said Mereness, whose two-run single came on the first pitch of the at-bat. “He doesn’t want to get down in the count. I figured he would throw me a first-pitch fastball, and I just figured I needed to get those runs in somehow.”

Jacob Cavanaugh hit a two-run single in the first inning and picked up the win for the Spartans, who have won eight in a row and 11 of their past 12 games. James Marcinkowski picked up the two-inning save. Sycamore seems to be breaking out of its midseason offensive swoon, and the seven runs are the most the Spartans have scored since beating Morris, 107, on April 20.

“This is clearly our best offensive game in a long time,” Jason Cavanaugh said.

By the numbers: Sycamore finished with 12 hits as a team, with eight of the nine batters in the lineup recording at least one hit. Mereness and Riley combined to go 6 for 8, while Jack Mizgalski, Marcinkowski, Tyler Didio, Jacob

Cavanaugh, Justin Pottorff and Jarod Montavon each had singles. Mizgalski picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and also walked twice. For Geneseo, Keaton Rice was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Cade Humphries had a two-run single.

Beyond the stats: Geneseo third baseman Marshall Rice made a pair of incredible diving plays at third base. The Spartans had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Marcinkowski hit a rocket down the line, and Rice dove to grab it and touched third base for the final out.

They said it: “For us, what’s good about everybody on this team is we hate losing, so I think that’s our main goal,” Mereness said of the motivation playing in nonconference games the rest of the regular season. “We just don’t want to lose. We’re on an eight- or nine-game winning streak right now, so our main goal is just not to lose. We hate losing.”

Up next: The Spartans will head to Geneseo for a game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Despite anchoring the Sycamore defense, Emma Stice isn’t exactly a stranger to scoring for the Sycamore soccer team.

On Tuesday against Morris, Stice scored a goal she said she won’t forget – her fifth tally of the season came on senior night in her last regular-season game on her home field, a 2-0 Sycamore win.

“It was fun to move up because I’ve been playing back all year,” Stice said. “It’s memorable playing on this field for four years and a good group of girls and enjoying it.”

Playing against a Morris team that has struggled this year – it is 0-7 heading into its final Northern Illinois Big 12 East game and 5-9 overall – Syca-

more coach Dave Lichamer shuffled around his lineup. The Spartans (15-14, 7-0-1) already were without leading scorer Saydie Holland, who picked up a red card in the closing minutes Thursday at DeKalb.

Lichamer let more seniors get playing time, letting them play the whole game. Normal goalie Maegan Schwartz played at forward in the second half. Erica Coulibaly and Taylor Meier – who had a goal and two assists between them – split time in goal in the second half.

Lichamer said that with the Spartans’ fate already sealed – they were the conference champs regardless of Tuesday’s outcome, and they were already named the top seed in their regional – he decided to jumble the lineup.

“We moved some people around, and Saydie was out, so we had some things we were able to do today because in the overall standings the game didn’t really matter,” Lichamer said. “We rested Kierah (Meier) with an ankle, Saydie was out with the card from DeKalb, so we had to move some personnel around. It allowed our seniors to play the entire game.”

“It was fun to move up because I’ve been playing back all year.

It’s memorable playing on this field for four years and a good group of girls and enjoying it.”

Sycamore senior The Spartans won, 8-0, last time against Morris, and started the scoring Tuesday when Coulibaly found Meier on a cross with 34:22 left. The Spartans added a goal in the second half when Meier – who had just missed two shots high and was peppering the Morris net all game with shots – passed in front of the net to Stice, who tapped it in.

As the minutes ticked down in the first half, Lichamer said he came up with contingency plans just in case Morris tied the game.

“I had thought about toward halftime what happens if ... “ Lichamer said. “But we were still generating chances and they weren’t really mov-

ing the ball offensively on us. As long as we had the one, we were fine.”

Lichamer said he was pleased with the performance.

“You still want people to play well, you still want people doing their jobs – even if they find themselves in a different spot on the field that they’re not necessarily accustomed to,” Lichamer said. “I think we saw that.”

By the numbers: Sycamore did not face a shot on goal.

Beyond the stats: The win was the second in a row for Sycamore since a 1-1 home tie against Kaneland last week.

They said it: “They came out good and strong and packed in the box, so we did what we could,” Stice said.

“They were playing five in the back, so you can only do so much with that many people in the box.”

Up next: The Spartans wrap up the regular season Thursday at Dixon, then start the playoffs at home Tuesday against Rochelle. Morris hosts Yorkville in its finale Thursday before starting the playoffs at the Metamora Regional against the hosts Tuesday.

DeKalb looks to repeat as sectional champions

Now the Barbs are hoping to go back to back.

Loaded with young talent, the Barbs head into the 17-team Class 3A Antioch Sectional on Wednesday after being a dropped baton away from likely winning their first Northern Illinois Big 12 championship.

“You know what, that’s OK,” DeKalb coach Tywon Green said about the dropped baton. “Just don’t drop it on Wednesday. ... We’re only touching the ceiling of the potential of this team and what they can do. I wanted to win conference really bad for these girls, but that motivation going into sectionals is huge. Hopefully, we can go back to back in sectional championships. Here we go.”

The Barbs will start field events at

4 p.m. Wednesday and running events at 5:30 p.m. Last season, they won the Class 3A Huntley Sectional with 87 points, which beat out second-place Rockton Hononegah (76). However, only Jasmine Kemp, who was tied for third in the high jump last year, returns as somebody who qualified for state individually for the Barbs.

At the Northern Illinois Big 12 meet on Friday in Rochelle, the Barbs took second place with 111 points – just behind the 116 points by Yorkville, which won the conference meet for the fourth straight year.

However, the Barbs were disqualified from the 400-meter relay, an event that the Barbs had the fastest seed time, after dropping the baton on the first handoff.

“We had to bring them over in a huddle real quick, because they were crying and they were a little upset,” Green said. “We slowed them down and got them back on track, and they

went out and performed. I think we won the next three races.”

The Barbs got a top-heavy performance at the conference meet, getting 80 of their 111 points from firstplace finishes – getting wins from Bri Buggs (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash), Katherine Olsen (1,600-meter run, 3,200-meter run), Brianna Barwick (100-meter hurdles), Kyra Ozier (400-meter run) and the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Buggs broke the meet record in the 100, and the 800-meter relay also snapped the previous conference record.

“Bri needs that competition to get ready for sectionals and state’s going to be flying,” Green said. “She’s peaking at the right time and I’m happy for her.”

The IHSA Girls Track and Field State Championships begin May 18 in Charleston.

Arrieta, whose velocity has been down 2 to 3 mph most starts this year, was considered by some the top free agent starter in the upcoming free agency class as the season opened. It’s a class that also includes Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish and that could get a boost if the Giants’ Johnny Cueto and/or Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka opt out of their contracts.

Arrieta’s agent, Scott Boras, has compared Arrieta in recent years to Max Scherzer, a Cy Young winner with the Tigers, who got a then-record, seven-year, $210 million deal with the Nationals before the 2015 season.

“Financially, things are going to work out anyway,” Arrieta added. “I don’t put a whole lot of time and effort and energy into my free agency. I’m here right now to try and win games for the team. I think guys respect that. I think teams respect that.

“And sometimes results, they stink.

WHITE SOX NOTES

Catcher Soto scratched after elbow injury resurfaces

CHICAGO – A second setback with his right elbow doesn’t seem to bode well for White Sox catcher Geovany Soto, who was scratched from the lineup Tuesday with more soreness.

After being limited to 26 games with the Geovany Soto Angels in 2016 because of knee injuries, Soto, 34, who played in 78 games for the Sox in 2015, was brought back on a minor league contract in the offseason and lasted 10 days before going on the disabled list April

13 with an inflamed elbow.

Since coming back April 22, Soto has caught in eight of 16 games, splitting time with Omar Narvaez – who was inserted into Tuesday’s starting lineup.

Soto has provided veteran leadership for Narvaez while batting .190 with three homers and nine RBIs in 13 games.

Injury updates: Reliever Zach Putnam, who missed the just-completed road trip after going on the DL April 25 with right elbow inflammation, was upbeat and optimistic about getting clearance Wednesday to resume throwing.

Putnam (1.04 ERA) has allowed one run in seven relief appearances.

Carlos Rodon continues to work his way back from biceps bursitis and has thrown off a mound in Arizona, but the Sox are offering few details about the left-hander.

“At this point on Carlos I’m only comfortable telling you he continues to progress in his throwing program,’’ general manager Rick Hahn said.

Staying with Covey: Dylan Covey, 0-3 with a 10.04 ERA in his past four starts, will start again this weekend against the Padres, manager Rick Renteria said.

“It’s something the organization would have to reassess if we were going to do something,’’ Renteria said.

“But right now we’re still on track to continue to have him where he’s at.’’

All quiet on the trading front: Hahn on the climate of trade discussions: “There are conversations going on, but they probably pick up a little more after the [June 12-14] draft. Right now teams are mostly out scouting and preparing for the draft. Once that comes and goes, the volume of calls tends to pick up.

Hahn reiterated what he said in March that he would not hesitate to deal across town with the Cubs.

This and that: Twins third baseman Miguel Sano lost his appeal and served his one-game suspension for what Major League Baseball termed “aggressive actions” against the Tigers on April 23. ... Willy Garcia made his first start in center field for the Sox.

DENVER – Jake Arrieta isn’t the only Cubs starter to struggle in the first five weeks of the Cubs’ championship defense.

But another rough start Tuesday in Colorado has put him in places he has never experienced as a Cub – his 5.35 ERA after a 10-4 loss to the Rockies the highest it has been in any season since joining the club, after failing to finish the fourth inning to the Rockies for the first time since 2012.

What’s the deal with Arrieta?

That was supposed to be the mega-million-dollar question by sometime in December.

But seven starts closer to his pending free agency it has been replaced by the more pressing question of what it might take to regain the form he showed in two World Series wins last fall – never mind his 2015 Cy Young Award season.

One thing Arrieta says is not an issue to question: “I’m not worried about the contract year,” he said after giving up nine hits and three walks in 32/3 innings in the first game of a rain-created doubleheader at Coors Field. “I’m worried about

This one was his shortest since July 5, 2012, almost exactly a year to the day before the Orioles traded him to the Cubs.

It also came just two starts after his 72-start streak of pitching at least five innings – which was the longest active such streak in the majors – ended with a 41/3-inning start in Boston.

“I’m going through a period right now where it’s been tough,” said Arrieta, who added that he needs to get more aggressive with more of his pitches than he leaned on Tuesday. “And I’ve had many of these before in the past, and I know how to deal with it. I just look forward to getting back to work tomorrow and in the next couple days, trying to refine some stuff, and it’ll be better.

“That’s all I care about, just trying to improve in some form or fashion every day.”

Manager Joe Maddon pointed to a lack of swings and misses that he’s used to seeing from Arrieta and said it could be as simple as the dip in velocity in the early going that was evident again Tuesday.

But neither he nor Arrieta seemed concerned about that. Both say he’s healthy, and that’s the big factor in optimism for a turnaround once they’re closer to sea level. A one-out throwing error by shortstop Javy Baez on Tuesday extended a six-run third inning Tuesday. But Arrieta made no excuses.

“I didn’t do my job,” Arrieta said.

“Pretty poor performance on my part.”

LOCAL BRIEF Four NIU softball players named all-MAC

The Northern Illinois softball team had four players named all-Mid-American Conference, including a pair of first-teamers.

Senior first baseman Kayti Grable was named first team all-MAC for the fourth consecutive season, which is the first time a Huskies player has done that, while junior Bekah Harnish was named first team as a catcher. Kali Kossakowski and Jenny Van Geertry were named to the second team.

“NIU softball had its first back-to-back 30-win season since 1999-2000 due in a large part to these four student-athletes,” NIU coach Christina Sutcliffe said. “All four have led our team at one point in the season.”

Grable is the school’s all-time home run and RBI leader and paced the Huskies this season in batting average (.378), slugging percentage (.594), hits (54), home runs (8) and RBIs (38).

Harnish overcame a slow start to hit .365 during conference play, with 23 runs scored and 17 RBIs. Kossakowski is batting .371 in MAC play, with 26 hits, 16 RBIs and 21 runs scored. Van Geertry is hitting .266 with four home runs and a team-high 10 doubles.

The Huskies (30-19) were second in the MAC West and are the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, facing No. 6 Miami (Ohio) (29-22) in the first round at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

Treat mom to posh afternoon tea

I am an unapologetic Anglophile: “Downton Abbey” marathon watcher.

But, oh, the tea.

I’m not just talking about a properly brewed cuppa – although even that, by some accounts, is losing ground to coffee – delightful and rejuvenating as it is.

What I’m referring to is afternoon tea, that convivial tradition of scones, sandwiches and pastries that bridges the hangry gap between lunch and dinner. In fact, the story goes, that’s exactly why Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, supposedly began the practice in the 1840s. I love the leisurely pace, the treat-yourself mentality and the sheer variety of bite-size foods. I simply cannot get enough.

I’ve combined some of the best features of the British tradition with a more laid-back approach. It’s the perfect kind of party for bridal or baby showers, Mother’s Day or just about any time you want to gather a group of friends.

“Everyone’s happy when they’re coming for afternoon tea,” said Shael Mead, head pastry chef at London’s Ham Yard Hotel, whose baking I fell in love with during her earlier stint at another London tea spot, the Dean Street Townhouse. “It’s something special that people cherish, and that’s why I always put a lot of heart and soul into it.”

Here’s my five-point plan:

Good advice for any gathering, really. A lot of the aforementioned desserts (brownies, meringues, even layer cakes and cupcakes) can survive just fine made at least a day ahead of time, or frozen for longer. Scones are best served freshly baked, but feel free to stash unbaked dough rounds in the refrigerator or freezer.

Assembling sandwich fillings can be early work as well, so you can put them together at the last minute, or up to an hour or so before your guests arrive. Slice cucumbers or cheese the morning of your tea.

5. Go for a nice, but not too frilly, presentation.

No doilies. Instead, consider the popular vintage-chic strategy of

mixing and matching plates and cups you can pick up at antiques markets and secondhand shops – that’s the way you’ll find afternoon tea served at little cafes around England, Mead said.

If you want to introduce a traditional element into your setup, spring for a traditional three-tiered caddy you can use to display the food (or at least some of it). It doesn’t have to be expensive, either – check sites such as Etsy. Mead said you can justify the purchase by using it for more than tea, whether in lieu of your typical fruit bowl or for other parties. If you’re finding vintage flower patterns too froufrou, you can buy modern tiered servers with white or glass plates at Crate & Barrel, Target and Macy’s.

If you have a good tablecloth with napkins, this might be the time to use it, Willis-Jones said. Decorate the table simply with flowers from your backyard, or pick up a casual bouquet from the farmers market.

After all, most of us don’t have sprawling formal gardens on grand estates in the English rolling hills of Kent or Surrey. But with a little imagination and draped in the sunny warmth of an afternoon tea amid clinking cups and good friends, I’m happy to pretend, at least for a little while.

Combine the 8 tablespoons of butter, sugar, eggs, flours, baking powder and almond extract in the bowl of a stand mixer or handheld electric mixer. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes, until smooth, stopping to scrape down the bowl, as needed.

Spoon half the batter into one side of the cake pan as neatly as possible. If you’re using a pan divider, place it up against the exposed side of the batter.

Add a few drops of red food coloring to the remaining batter, blending it in to create a deep pink color. Spoon the pink batter into the other side of the cake pan. If you’re not using a divider, try to create an even and discrete line between the colors of batter.

Smooth the surface.

Bake (middle rack) for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cake is well risen, springy to the touch and has shrunk slightly from the sides of the pan. Let cool in the pan for a few minutes, then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling completely on a wire rack.

Trim the edges to end up with a 7-inch square cake, then cut each colored half of the cake into 2 equal sections of equal size (for a total of 4).

Gently heat the apricot jam in a small saucepan over low heat until it’s fairly fluid and spreadable. Use an offset spatula to spread the warmed jam on the facing sides of one pink section and one yellow section, then press them together to form the bottom layer. Next, spread a layer of jam on their combined top surface. Then spread jam on the inside edge of the remaining yellow section and place it atop the bottom pink section; repeat with the remaining pink section, placing it atop the bottom yellow section and pressing it up against the top pink section, to form a checkerboard effect.

For final assembly, brush the top of the cake with apricot jam.

Roll out the marzipan into an oblong the length of the cake and sufficiently wide enough to wrap around the cake with a little margin for error, about 9 by 12 inches. Invert the cake onto the marzipan (jam side down), then brush the remaining three sides with apricot jam. Press the marzipan neatly around the cake so the seam ends up at one corner.

Trim any excess marzipan and cut a very thin slice off each end of the cake for a neat edge.

Use a sharp paring knife to score the top of the cake with a crisscross quilted pattern.

Combine the flour, sugar and baking powder in the bowl of a stand mixer or handheld electric mixer. Beat on low speed just to blend.

Add the chilled butter; beat on low speed for 4 or 5 minutes, until the mixture starts to look crumbly with some large chunks. Stop to scrape down the bowl. Add the currants, if using; beat on low speed until evenly distributed.

Pour in the milk and heavy cream; beat on low speed for several seconds, just until the liquids are incorporated, to form a soft dough.

Lightly flour a work surface. Transfer the dough there and pat it to an even thickness of about 1 inch. Cover loosely with a clean kitchen towel; let it rest for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner.

Flour the edges of your biscuit cutter, then use it to cut out 17 to 20 scones, arranging them at least 1 inch apart on the baking sheet as you work and re-flouring the cutter each time. Try to reroll the scraps no more than once as the subsequent rounds of dough may not rise as much in the oven.

Lightly brush the tops of the scones with milk. Bake (middle rack) for about 16 minutes, turning the sheet from front to back halfway through, until lightly golden. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool for a few minutes before serving, or cool completely before storing.

On April 19, 11 eighth-grade students from Clinton Rosette Middle School gave a presentation to DeKalb County businesses on the effects of secondhand smoke. They reviewed the Smoke Free Illinois Act and encouraged businesses to strengthen their worksite tobacco policies.

The students have been involved in “Reality Illinois,” a statewide tobacco prevention program, for the past two years. By participating in the Reality Illinois program, the students raise awareness and educate others on the harmful effects of tobacco while promoting policy and system change in their community.

Chessa Kendrick, program facilitator and health promotion specialist at the DeKalb County Health Department, has encouraged the CRMS students to be involved with policy and system change in their own community.

This year, the students focused on businesses strengthening their worksite tobacco policies.

“Over the two years of facilitating Reality Illinois, I have seen these eighth-grade students become passionate about the health of their community and become advocates for policy change related to tobacco,” Kendrick said in a news release. “These students have taken the initiative to educate their peers, families and

Comparing surgical procedures Dear Doctor: My cardiovascular surgeon tells me medicine has mostly abandoned shunt and stent placements as a solution to carotid artery plaques. Instead, doctors are returning to the older “Roto-Rooter” procedure because patient outcomes have proven less problematic. What’s your take on this?

Dear Reader: Let’s start with an anatomy lesson. The common carotid arteries are major suppliers of blood to the brain. You have two of them, and you can feel their pulse at the side of your neck, lateral to your Adam’s apple (thyroid cartilage). They split in the neck to become the external and internal carotid arteries, which supply blood to the majority of the brain.

Turbulent blood flow at the location of these splits contributes to the formation of plaque within the internal carotid arteries, as do other factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. This plaque can rupture and cause closure of the artery; or a portion of the plaque can break off and lodge in a smaller artery. In either circumstance, a stroke occurs – leading to a significant loss of neurologic function. Thus, if the internal carotid artery is significantly closed with plaque, it is necessary to clear the plaque.

What you describe as a Roto-Rooter procedure is called a carotid endarterectomy. A surgeon performs an endarterectomy via an incision in the neck. Taking care to maintain blood flow to that side of the brain, he or she clamps the internal carotid artery, makes an incision in the artery and locates the plaque.

The surgeon then frees the plaque from the lining of the artery and removes it before closing the blood vessel and placing a patch on the artery to prevent complications.

Obviously, the procedure is not without its risks. The death rate from endarterectomy varies between 0.5 and 3 percent. Also, the rate of having a stroke during the procedure ranges between 0.25 and 3 percent and

Carotid artery stenting is a different type of procedure in which the surgeon places a catheter into a major artery (usually the femoral artery in the groin), then moves it via wire up to the internal carotid artery.

The surgeon then dilates the artery (if necessary) and lodges the stent into its lining.

On the surface, stenting may sound less dangerous, but studies have not found this to be the case. A 2012 analysis of 16 studies found that, in the 30 days after the procedure, stenting had a higher rate of combined death and stroke (8.2 percent) compared to endarterectomy (5 percent). A separate study also linked stenting to more minor strokes.

But note the difference in death and major stroke was not seen among patients less than 70 years of age. And other studies have shown, over timeframes of 4.2 and 10 years, the rates of major strokes and death show less of a benefit with the carotid endarterectomy versus stenting.

Still, as of now, research suggests the carotid endarterectomy is clearly the better procedure, especially if you’re over the age of 70.

But note each patient is different. In difficult surgical situations, stenting remains a good alternative, and with newer carotid stenting techniques in development, the choices for individuals will continue to evolve.

DEAR ABBY My fiancée has a death wish. She Jeanne recently lost her Phillips youngest child to suicide. She’s in a lot of pain and rarely has a good day. She suffers from PTSD and relives the scene daily in her mind. She’s a hard worker, so that helps to keep her mind off things. She lives in an empty house with nothing there but farm animals, which she says do help to make her happy.

Abby, I’m worried because she does things that put her in danger, such as staying at her son’s grave alone at night for hours. She told me recently she’s planning to go out of state to visit her other son and then spend six days by herself camping and hiking. She also goes jogging alone late at night and leaves her doors unlocked.

It seems she just doesn’t care about what may happen. She says don’t worry, but I’m terrified one day something will happen.

We’re recently engaged and I care deeply about her and her safety, but I’m helpless to say anything because she just gets mad. I don’t know what to do. – Very Concerned Fiancé In Florida Dear Fiancé: Your fiancée is in the throes of grief. If she is the person who discovered her son’s body, she may be numb with shock and not thinking clearly.

It is not unusual for people who have lost a loved one – particularly a child – to wonder if life is still worth living and to engage either consciously or subconsciously in risk-taking behavior. A licensed psychotherapist or a suicide support group could help her to recognize what she’s doing and to get through this.

Seeing others who have experienced what she has and who are further along in the grieving process would be helpful.

If she’s resistant to the idea, offer to go with her. The American Federation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org) can help you find resources in your state.

Dear Abby: The husbands of both my two daughters asked for my blessing before asking my girls to marry them. I felt what they did was respectful, and it was very much appreciated. My wife felt the same way when I relayed the good news to her.

I believe this courtesy replaced what in the “olden days” was a request for permission from the father rather than a blessing and, in my opinion, is more appropriate. If I am correct in my assumption that “permission” has evolved to “blessing,” I wonder if it would have been more appropriate for them to have asked my wife and me together for our blessing. West was wrong. If East had started with three hearts, he would surely have shifted to a trump at trick two, not helped set up a winner for South.
