Huge sinkholes now are appearing in odd places

FRASER, Mich. – Dora Linda Nishihara was driving in San Antonio one dark evening in early December when she suddenly disappeared from sight. Later, her car, with her body inside, was found at the bottom of a 12-foot-deep water-filled sinkhole that had swallowed the road ahead of her.

Two days later, a school bus driver in Brooklyn, New York, ran into a huge crater on his route. Luckily, no children were on board and the driver survived with minor injuries.

Just last week, massive holes opened up in New York City’s lower Manhattan, suburban Atlanta and San Francisco.

Sinkholes are not a new phenomenon in the U.S., especially in a half-dozen states where the geology makes them more likely. But a recent spate of huge, sudden-appearing caverns is prompting alarm because they’re happening in places where they shouldn’t, and now seem to be proliferating nationwide. The usual cause: crumbling water, drain and sewer pipes, often neglected by cities with budget problems.

Some experts are calling for a national study to assess the risk and potential remedies, which could involve high costs for many jurisdictions.

“The financial impact on cities is in the millions of dollars a year around the country,” said Bob Brinkmann, a professor of geology, environment and sustainability at Hofstra University.

No government agency keeps track of sinkholes from man-made causes. Most of the scientific research has focused on areas where limestone, caves and natural springs create prime conditions for earthen collapses. Florida has the most.

But scientists who study natural sinkholes say the caverns from infrastructure failures are becoming a bigger problem.

From early December through April, according to a review by The Associated Press of media coverage, 39 significant sinkholes related to failing infrastructure – a rate of about one every four days – struck across the country in places as varied as Chicago, Los Angeles, Hoboken, New Jersey, Sioux City, Iowa, and Seattle.

One person was killed and four were injured in the incidents, which also prompted extensive evacuations and disruption of utilities.

On Christmas Eve, a hole the size of a football field suddenly swallowed parts of three houses and a section of road in a Detroit suburb. The sudden crater in San Francisco last week, 20 feet long, pulled in a semi-truck. The cause of that one has not been determined.

New DeKalb mayor looks to improve city safety, community vibe

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Jerry Smith, accompanied by his wife, Ging, officially was sworn in as DeKalb’s new mayor during Monday’s City Council meeting, which also consisted of the swearing in of a new city clerk, two new aldermen and two sitting aldermen.

According to official results, Smith received 47.92 percent of the vote during the April 4 election, followed by Misty Haji-Sheikh, who received 19.28 percent of the vote; former Mayor John Rey, who received 19.15 percent; and Michael Embrey, who received 13.65 percent.

Smith said he has met with each alderman in the past month and has

met with Sycamore’s new mayor, Curt Lang, to discuss ways both communities can work together.

“Many of our constituents have reached out to me, [and] as a result, I’ve been asked to meet with property owners, developers and a host of different organizations, some pleased and some not so pleased,” Smith said.

“I was careful not to promise too much. What I did do is pledge to listen, to study, to engage others in the conversation, to be honest and to be fair.”

Before stepping down and handing his seat to his successor, Rey thanked his family, city staff, volunteers, residents and council members for their support.

Family shares story of fleeing Communist regime

Shaw Media correspondent DeKALB – It took courage for a DeKalb family to flee war-torn Cambodia in the late 1970s.

It took Bethlehem Lutheran Church in DeKalb to help the family have a new beginning.

Hem Lach and members of his family were at the church, 1915 N. First St., on Sunday to share their story of exodus from Cambodia. While the Communist regime – Khmer Rouge, which was responsible for mass genocide – was fighting the Vietnamese Army, Lach and his family fled in the middle of the night.

“We went through everything with the Khmer Rouge,” Lach said. “When Vietnam invaded, we knew we had to leave and not risk being sent to a labor camp or somewhere else.”

“If you were caught, you were killed,” Lach’s oldest daughter, Chandy Tracy, said Sunday. “[The Khmer Rouge] were the last encounter before escape. They held their fire because

they were outnumbered by the (Vietnamese) freedom fighters, which is why they decided ‘OK, we aren’t going to win this.’ From then on, when we crossed the border [into Thailand], we were in safe territory, and they left us alone.”

In 1979, the family arrived in a refugee camp in northwest Thailand and stayed until 1981. The conditions were “night and day” compared with Cambodia, Lach said.

“Thailand was our second country,” Lach said.

In the early 1980s, World Lutheran Relief urged churches to sponsor refugee families. Former Bethlehem Lutheran member Dorothy Rossing answered the call, longtime church member Anna Fischer said.

Baker: NIU to reduce staff, including 30 active employees

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In an effort to cut expenses leading into fiscal 2018, Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker announced in an email that there will be 150 staff position reductions, including the elimination of 30 active positions.

Although most cuts will be achieved through attrition – retirements and the elimination of open positions – the 30 position cuts will affect current employees, Baker said.

“Of that number, about 23 are civil service employees, many of whom will transition to open positions across the university or exercise their civil service employment rights within their classifications,” he wrote. “The remainder are supportive professional staff whose contracts will not be renewed.”

Most, if not all, of the affected employees were notified by Monday, the email said.

“We are committed to assisting and supporting those individuals as they search for other positions to further their careers,” Baker wrote.

The reductions are part of an effort to close a $35 million budget gap, assuming NIU will not receive operations or Monetary Award Program grant funding for fiscal 2018 from the state.

Rossing and fellow member Virginia Rasmussen helped the rest of the family learn English. So did TV. Tracy remembers learning English by watching sitcoms such as “ALF” and “Three’s Company.”

Tracy fondly recalled being “surrounded by loving people and going to people’s houses for dinner” and that her “favorite holidays were Christmas and Halloween.” Fischer, Tracy’s godmother, helped make her Halloween costumes.

Tom Inboden, owner of Inboden’s Meat Market in DeKalb, hired Lach to clean the shop and later hired his younger brother, Chemroeun.

Man charged in battery case free on recognizance

NIU has been covering the missed MAP payments for students who rely on the funding for tuition assistance.

The university’s goal is to build a $35 million reserve fund, Baker said, with $20 million coming from increased support from the NIU Foundation and cuts to university operating budgets.

An additional $15 million will come from increased fees and other charges, as well as cost cuts from other parts of the budget, Baker wrote.

Lach also cleaned at JC Penney for four years in addition to working with catalog merchandise orders. Since 1985, he has worked for Sonoco Alloyd in DeKalb. Tracy is a preschool teacher.

The Laches became naturalized American citizens in 1998.

“If it weren’t for Bethlehem Lutheran Church, [we] wouldn’t be here,” Lach said.

Tracy poignantly told of what got her family out of Cambodia and into a new life: “Having faith and being Christian, the conditions that our people were living in and how they were being treated, and my father, who had been a soldier with the soldier mentality to protect our family,” she said. “He is a hero.”

Fischer said the Laches’ story “needed to be told,” considering the plight of Syrian refugees today.

“I am so happy to have helped along with others to fulfill an American Dream,” she said. “We all can make a difference.”

“We are hopeful that a resolution in Springfield will come, and we will be spared the need for further actions,” Baker said. “However, because of the severity of our current circumstances, and the uncertainty of our fiscal future, it is unlikely that any last-minute legislative action will mitigate the need for the changes outlined here.”

In the past three fiscal years, the state has reduced its funding for the school by $125 million, Baker said.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man who police said choked a woman then punched her in the face multiple times is free on his recognizance.

Lionel A. Morales, 24, of the 600 block of Charter Street, is charged with aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery. If he’s convicted of the more serious offense, aggravated domestic battery, he could face Lionel A. three to seven years in Morales prison.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said in court documents that at 9:27 p.m. Friday outside a home in the 500 block of North Wildflower Street in Cortland, Morales choked a woman to the point where she nearly became unconscious, threw her to the ground, punched her in the face multiple times and then held her down to keep her from running away.

He was ordered Monday to visit pretrial services, to have no contact with the victim and to surrender any firearms and Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Chicago police issued a bulletin Monday warning its officers about gangs armed with high-powered weapons, after three people were shot to death over the weekend – including two attending a memorial for the earlier victim.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the three people who were killed in the shootings Sunday were all members of the same street gang.

A shooting early in the day left one man dead, and the two others were killed and eight people were injured in a spray of more than two dozen shots from two guns while attending a makeshift memorial for him. Police suspect they were all shot by members of a rival street gang in the same neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side.

The department beefed up patrols after the morning shooting of 26-year-old Daniel Cordova, who was found dead between parked cars in the Brighton Park neighborhood. The other shooting happened some 12 hours later, about a block away.

Madigan names envoys to approach Rauner on budget

SPRINGFIELD – The Democratic speaker of the Illinois House has appointed envoys to find areas of compromise on a state budget deal with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Speaker Michael Madigan said Monday that Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie of Chicago is one of four House Democrats who will seek common ground with the GOP administration on the state’s first full budget since 2015.

Democrats have sought cuts and a tax increase to deal with $12 billion in pastdue bills. Rauner first wants tightened restrictions on workers’ compensation and a local property tax freeze.

Democratic state Treasurer Michael Frerichs echoed Madigan’s concern in a separate statement Monday. He said the

Data show more U.S. tourists visiting state, staying longer

CHICAGO – New Illinois tourism figures show about 110 million tourists from around the country visited the state last year, a more than 1 million increase compared to 2015.

Eighty-three percent of visitors came for leisure and 17 percent came for business, The Chicago Tribune reported. Gov. Bruce Rauner released the numbers Monday, saying that every $1 invested in tourism in Illinois generates $9 in economic impact.

“This is another example that in areas where we can improve the economy, our administration is moving forward,” Rauner said in a statement. “Illinois is the greatest state in the nation. We have so much to be proud of and so many reasons to invite our out-of-state friends to visit the Land of Lincoln.”

According to the Illinois Office of Tourism, the average stay lasted about 3 percent longer than the previous year.

Sinclair to buy Tribune Media, expand local TV reach

NEW YORK – Sinclair Broadcast Group, already the nation’s largest local TV station operator, wants to be even bigger.

The company announced Monday that it will pay about $3.9 billion for Tribune Media and its 42 stations, which includes KTLA in Los Angeles, WGN in Chicago and WPIX in New York. Chicago-based Tribune also owns stakes in the Food Network and job-search website CareerBuilder.

Sinclair has 173 stations, including KUTV in Salt Lake City, KOMO in Seattle and WKRC in Cincinnati. The Tribune deal, plus other pending acquisitions, will give it a total of 233 stations, putting distance between it and rival Nexstar Media Group, which has 170.

Sinclair said it might have to sell some stations to comply with Federal Communications Commission rules, although the

Drones helping accident investigators in suburbs

CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago unit has begun deploying drones to help with investigations of major traffic accidents. The Daily Herald reported that the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is using camera-carrying drones to help view accident scenes, take measurements and reconstruct what happened.

Drones sometimes can see evidence better from the air than investigators can on the ground. That can include identifying fluid trails from broken brake lines that indicate how an accident unfolded.

Among the advantages is that investigators can finish working at an accident scene faster and reopen roads sooner.

Libertyville police Detective Belinda Steckenrider told the newspaper that on-site work that used to take up to five hours can be cut to less than three hours with drones.

John Rung named CEO of Shaw Media

browland@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Longtime Johnsburg resident John Rung has been tapped to take the reins of Sterling-based Shaw Media, publisher of close to 100 print and digital publications in Illinois and Iowa.

The Shaw Media Board of Directors named Rung CEO of the company Thursday at the company’s annual meeting. He is the first non-family-member to hold that role at the third oldest continuously owned and operated family newspaper company in the nation. The company now known as Shaw Media was founded in 1851 by Benjamin Flower Shaw.

Rung, 54, had been president of Shaw Media since 2013. Before that, he had served as the company’s chief operating officer. Rung has been with the company 20 years and has served in a variety of management roles, including as publisher of the Northwest Herald. Rung replaces Thomas D. “Tom” Shaw, who announced last month that he would be retiring in May. Shaw will remain on the company’s board.

“The difference between being the CEO and what I’ve been doing the past few years is a much higher level of communication with the Board of Directors, the Trust and with the Shaw family,” Rung said in an interview in his office at the Northwest Herald.

“I will also be more responsible for acquisitions, investments and diversification.”

The change won’t affect readers of the company’s print and digital publications, although Rung said he planned to invest more in the company’s newsgathering efforts.

“I’ve been in charge of operations for several years now and this transition has been in process for the last three years,” Rung said. “Vice President J. Tom Shaw oversees our suburban operations, and Jim Ringness is the general manager of the Northwest Herald. As Tom has been transferring his responsibilities to me, I have been delegating more authority to J. Tom and Jim. This has been a well-thought-out transition, and I credit Tom Shaw for that foresight.”

Tom Shaw said Rung is the right person to lead the growing company.

“John Rung is a smart, hardworking, person who enjoys a strong moral compass,” Tom Shaw said in a statement. “Those traits, along with his exceptional industry knowledge and experience, as well as his record of success within Shaw Media makes him someone that our Board of Directors, the Shaw Family Owners, and most importantly, the employees of Shaw Media can trust to lead the company.”

Rung said he has learned some key business skills from Tom Shaw over the years.

“First off, I can say with complete sincerity that Tom is the most decent and thoughtful person I have ever known,” Rung said. “As a younger man, I was extremely aggressive and did not hesitate to take action. I’ve learned from Tom that patience and consideration are extremely valuable traits.

“As you can imagine, we spend a great deal of time discussing that topic,” Rung said. “We have a plan that we call ‘Four Corners.’ We see our print and digital newspaper products becoming increasingly focused on local issues. We are aggressively pursuing strategic acquisitions, and we are launching new product lines that mesh well with our community newspapers. A perfect example of that would be Pro Football Weekly, a product that has seen revenue and audience increase for three consecutive years.”

Rung, who lives in Johnsburg with his wife, Rachel, and three children, said the printed newspaper won’t disappear anytime soon.

“I don’t see the printed newspaper dying, but it will continue to evolve,” he said. “Newspapers have to be more focused and we have to provide more depth on important issues. We might not be first with a story, but we can be best. That is a difficult objective when you consider how classified ads have migrated away from newspapers, combined with the struggles retailers are facing. We have to become more valuable to our readers at the same time our ad revenue is decreasing. That is not an easy task, but it’s exciting, and it’s what I’ve signed on for, so bring it on.”

Outside of the office, Rung is an amateur triathlete who competes in three or four triathlons a season, down from about 15 a season at his peak.

He’s an avid sports fan – particularly football and the Chicago Bears. He also enjoys reading (mostly history) and music (from the late 1970s to 1990s, including the Offspring, Foo Fighters, Green Day,

With the end of the school just a few weeks away, some students are looking forward to “kicking back” and relaxing after a hectic school year.

Others have plans for a summer job such as mowing lawns, working at the concession stand or detasseling rows and rows of seed corn. Still other students have their eyes set on learning skills that will help them in a career they have been dreaming about.

That’s not to say that the school year was not hectic and that resting and regrouping is not a good idea.

And learning the basic work skills of attendance, punctuality and responsibility has got to be a plus.

The testimony from Yates, an Obama administration holdover fired soon after for other reasons, marked her first public comments about the concerns she raised and filled in basic details about the chain of events that led to Flynn’s ouster in February.

Her testimony, coupled with the revelation hours earlier that President Barack Obama himself had warned Donald Trump against hiring Flynn shortly after the November election, made clear that alarms about Flynn had reached the highest levels of the U.S. government months before. Flynn “the highest security clearance” when he worked at the Pentagon. Trump made no mention of the fact that Flynn had been fired from his high position by the Obama administration in 2014.

Yates filled in new details of the events of Jan. 26, describing contacting McGahn in the morning and telling him she had something sensitive to discuss in person. Later that day, at the White House, she told him there was an alarming discrepancy between how Trump officials, including Pence, were characterizing Flynn’s contacts with Kislyak and what intelligence officials knew to be true based on recordings they’d reviewed.

The pair spoke several times over the next two days, with McGahn asking Yates how Flynn had fared during an interview with the FBI earlier that week – she did not answer – and why it was the concern of the Justice Department if White House officials had misled each other.

Immigrant-bashing over rape of teen that didn’t happen A geyser of misinformation, colored by reflexive immigrant-bashing, inundated the public commentary over a pair of undocumented Hispanic teenagers charged with raping a 14-year-old girl, their classmate, at a Montgomery County high school (Maryland) in March. From the White House to the statehouse in Annapolis, and in an outpouring of online opprobrium, the case was seized on as a convenient tool with which to reinforce the stereotype, popularized by President Donald Trump, of illegal immigrants as sexual predators.

Fast-forward seven weeks.

Prosecutors have now dropped rape and sex offense charges against the 17- and 18-year-old students for the incident, which defense lawyers have insisted was consensual. However tawdry the episode, however odious the conduct of the two young men who abused a vulnerable young girl, it did not constitute a crime – at least not one prosecutors felt they could make stick given what prosecutors called major “inconsistencies” from witnesses.

Given the new information, will there be any climbdown from March’s rush to judgment? Will White House spokesman Sean Spicer retract his statement that “immigration pays its toll on our people if it’s not done legally, and this is another example”? Will Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan rethink his epically confused comment that because of President Barack Obama’s “amnesty program,” the teens had been “sent ... to Montgomery County with no one being provided information”? (No “amnesty” covered the teenagers; they weren’t “sent” to the county

– they joined relatives there of their own volition; and the Supreme Court has ruled that public schools are obligated to educate students ages 5 to 21, regardless of their immigration status.)

No doubt, the county school system should be held to account, and made to review its security policies, for an episode that, whatever the circumstances, should not have occurred in a public building during a school day. That no crime may have been committed does not excuse the fact of what was apparently an extended encounter in a bathroom at Rockville High School, under the nose of teachers and other school authorities.

Nativists were primed for such an incident, their quickdraw condemnation ready at hand. Never mind that evidence shows illegal immigrants are no more likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans; the fact of their existence and their otherness is enough to set the bigots fulminating.

Prosecutors still plan to charge one or both undocumented teenagers with possession of child pornography, apparently for having received and forwarded photos sent by the girl herself. That may be a stretch – one of the defense lawyers termed it “selective prosecution of elective promiscuity” – given the nationwide epidemic among teenagers sharing inappropriate images, few of whom face criminal charges.

What’s been lost in the incident, and in the blinding speed with which partisans wielded it as a weapon in the national debate, is any empathy for the young girl. That may be the real tragedy in this sad tale.

Dairy flap shows risk of trade wars

Most of Wisconsin’s dairy farmers will be OK, at least for now, without Canadian buyers for their specialty milk.

State leaders happily announced this week that 56 of 58 Wisconsin farms being dropped by Grassland Dairy Products because of falling sales in Canada had found new buyers for their ultra-filtered milk, a high-protein ingredient used in cheese and yogurt.

That’s good news. Yet the risk of further and larger trade disputes remains high with President Donald Trump in the White House.

Wisconsin’s congressional delegation, especially House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, should seek to temper the president’s aggressive, nationalist instincts.

During a recent visit to Kenosha, Trump criticized Canada for “some very unfair things” happening to dairy farmers in Wisconsin. Canada recently tweaked its dairy pricing policy, making it harder for American farmers to sell there. Trump called this “a disgrace.”

But it’s hard to fault Canada for looking after its own when Trump is touting an “America first” policy and calling the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico “a disaster.” America enjoys a $400 million trade surplus with Canada on dairy products, and the U.S. government spends billions of dollars on its own domestic farm subsidies.

In an apparent response to Wisconsin’s dairy flap, Trump slapped a tariff on Canadian lumber. But greater restrictions on trade won’t

increase prosperity or jobs for either nation.

The main effect will be to increase milk and lumber prices for consumers on both sides of the border.

Trump and others who favor protectionist trade policies should learn from the Canadian tit for tat. It shows the risk of an all-out trade war, which would dwarf the negative effects being felt now.

What Wisconsin’s dairy farmers really need is greater access to global markets, not less. A glut of milk in the Midwest needs to go somewhere, and lots of people overseas want more protein in their diets. Unfortunately, Trump is withdrawing the U.S. from a sweeping trade deal with Pacific Rim nations that would have created more buyers.

In the short term, state leaders could roll back tax incentives for expanding milk operations to help stabilize demand. But ultimately, the answer lies in Washington, which should embrace greater trade with more fairness.

That’s what the Trans-Pacific Partnership sought to do.

Since NAFTA was adopted in 1994, some industries have been hurt by imports. But overwhelmingly the results have been positive for Wisconsin. Our state’s exports to Canada and Mexico have increased nearly 300 percent, and more than one of every five Wisconsin jobs now depends on foreign trade.

Trump shouldn’t reverse that trend with reckless spats involving even our closest allies.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Cultural appropriation: A modest proposal “Cultural appropriation” has become the latest evil denounced by soi-disant social justice warriors, on campus and off. Examples: “I was taught that white people shouldn’t listen to rap music because it’s cultural appropriation and could be offensive to my classmates,” Pomona College student Steven Glick in The Washington Post writes.

Young women wearing bindis (Hindu forehead adornments) and feathered headdresses at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival should be ashamed, declares Teen Vogue, because that’s cultural appropriation.

Yoga, as you may be relieved to learn from The Huffington Post, is not necessarily cultural appropriation. “But it’s complicated,” the writer adds. “It is really important to honor and appreciate where a practice comes from, or we risk appropriating it.”

Got that? Really important.

Sometimes individuals take it into their own hands to punish cultural appropriation – for example, when a Hampshire College student interrupted a women’s basketball game to insist that a Central Maine Community College player remove the braids from her hair.

Another transgressive bit of cultural appropriation, according to a Pitzer College assistant professor of Chicano-Latino studies: white students (presumably female) wearing hoop earrings.

A reasonably sane, decent adult might be puzzled by all this. But con-

That’s not (to risk committing an offense) chopped liver. It’s defined

by Wikipedia as “the adoption or use of the elements of one culture by members of another culture.”

Attentive readers will notice that “culture” is a euphemism.

The objection is not to participating in a culture but to doing so when you’re not of the right genetic ancestry.

Usually, it’s a group currently regarded as subject to discrimination or derogatory slurs. But there is a certain historical myopia at work here.

Other groups have also suffered from discrimination and ridicule over long periods of American history – and still are in some quarters.

Shouldn’t they be included?

Take one of which I am a member, Italian-Americans. The National Italian American Foundation estimates our numbers, based on census data and other information, to be about 16 million or 17 million, 5 percent of the nation’s population.

NIAF celebrates our achievements and welcomes others to join in. The first time that all four major-party nominees for president and vice president appeared on the same stage was at NIAF’s 1984 annual din-

ner – even though only one of them had Italian ancestry.

But what if Italian-Americans started objecting to cultural appropriation?

What if, for example, Italian-Americans began complaining that Americans of non-Italian descent are appropriating Italian culture by consuming pizza and pasta?

The logical corollary would be to stamp out this hijacking of cultural heritage.

In school lunchrooms, pupils would be required to show proof of Italian ancestry before getting a pizza slice.

Supermarket checkout counters would require similar proof from putative pasta purchasers.

Similarly for paninis at Panera Bread, chicken Parmesan at Olive Garden, etc.

Fortunately, modern technology makes this possible. Schoolchildren and supermarket shoppers could display their Ancestry.com profiles on their smartphones as readily as they already brandish student IDs or credit cards.

Others, however stereotypically Italianate in appearance, would have to be politely but firmly informed that their ancestry bars them from partaking of cuisine their ancestors had no part in concocting.

Admittedly, this would be tough on proprietors of Italian restaurants, whose potential customer pool would be reduced by 95 percent.

It would be tough on parents trying to raise children without

serving the pizza and pasta they see their Italian-American playmates enjoying.

But you can’t make a frittata without breaking eggs.

If appropriation of one culture is wrong, then appropriation of any culture is wrong.

I will leave readers to imagine all the possible extensions of this principle. Irish pubs, franchised worldwide by the Guinness folks, would find their clientele shrinking.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations would be smaller – and possibly quieter.

Greektown festivals would disappear.

Today’s stern enforcers of the ukase against cultural appropriation will not, I suppose, be amused by this modest proposal. (Oops, I forgot that “ukase” is a Russian word.)

They miss the irony that many of the folks who assure us that race is just a social construct, with no genetic significance, also insist that your genetic ancestry should determine what you can eat and wear, how you can exercise and style your hair.

Actually, American history is the story of one cultural appropriation after another, from English law to Thai cuisine, to our great mutual benefit. You shouldn’t have to submit a DNA sample to partake.

$3.9 billion TV deal a win for President Donald Trump

Donald Trump the businessman prided himself on making winning business deals.

Now, Donald Trump the president appears to be a winner in a deal he didn’t even negotiate.

The Sinclair Broadcast Group, already the nation’s largest owner of local TV stations, is adding 42 more – including Chicago’s WGN – in a $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media.

The result could be slightly friendlier coverage for the president in the nation’s largest media markets, as

well as in cities such as Cleveland; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Des Moines that represent key centers in battleground states.

Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, claimed in a December meeting with business executives that the Trump campaign traded access for less-critical coverage from Sinclair, according to Politico.

Sinclair denied favoring Trump and said its stations aired more interviews with the Republican than with his Democratic rival because Hillary Clinton turned down multiple requests.

Generally speaking, Sinclair’s news

coverage leans right. The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi reported in 2014 that after Sinclair purchased WJLA in Washington, some of the station’s journalists complained that “some of the stories ordered by Sinclair on a ‘must-run’ basis don’t meet the station’s long tradition of nonpartisan reporting.”

“Over the years,” Farhi reported, “the company and its executives have been consistent financial contributors to Republican candidates.”

Local TV remains a leading source of news for many Americans. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted after the election, voters named Fox

News and CNN as their top sources of information about the presidential campaign. Facebook, which aggregates news from many outlets, ranked third.

Then came local TV – ahead of any broadcast network or national newspaper.

Local TV stations help shape voters’ perceptions of the news, and Sinclair is about to own 215 of them, assuming regulatory approval. That is good news for Trump.

Petersen seeks 3rd trip to state

DeKalb pole vaulter working to regain form at end of senior season

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – AJ Petersen was in middle school when he became enamored with pole vault while watching the 2012 Summer Olympics.

He was amazed at the heights the participants soared, making it look effortless. When he became a freshman at DeKalb High School in 2013, he knew what he wanted to do when he joined the Barbs’ track and field program.

“My freshman year, first day of practice, I went over and said, ‘I want to pole vault,’” Petersen said. “I don’t regret it at all. Just somebody going four times their body height and just reach such a high mark, it looked effortless. Watching it, it doesn’t look as technical as it really is. Watching pros, they make it look like you just ran and plant and then you’re over it.

I was expecting it to be a lot easier than it is.”

Now a senior, Petersen is looking to make the IHSA Class 3A Track and Field State Championships for the third consecutive season as the Barbs prepare for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet on Friday at Sycamore. Despite being a two-time state qualifier, this is the first season in which Petersen is regarded as the Barbs’ top pole vaulter. Last season, Izaiah Webb placed third in the state meet – finishing with a height of 15 feet, 6 inches.

As a junior last season, Petersen consistently hit marks of 13-7 – with a season-best of 14-3. As the top pole vaulter this season, Petersen has had to deal with illness, poor weather conditions and added weight of being the No. 1 participant on his team. This season, he’s frequently been stuck at a height of 13-0.

“I feel like there’s a lot more pressure, and I feel like I’m not living up to what I’m

At the Tim Holt Invitational on Friday, Petersen finished with a mark of 13-6, which is his best this season.

He’s hit a mark of 14-9 in practice with a bungee, but things

haven’t been easy for the senior this season. During a three-way meet against Sycamore and Morris on April 18, he dealt with stomach flu and didn’t record a height. The illness stayed with him during the week – at one point, it was thought to be an appendix issue – and he had to miss the Peterson Prep Invitational at Kaneland later in the week.

“The feeling of a missed

height really hurts, especially when you’re seeded first and you finish last,” Petersen said. “You feel like total trash.”

However, DeKalb’s firstyear pole vault coach Albert Unruh said that Petersen has a strong work ethic, an experienced feeling and knowledge for the event and fully expects him to come on strong toward the end of the season.

“He’s disappointed because he expects more out of himself, and he hasn’t hit marks that he expects and that I expect from him,” Unruh said. “He’s an athlete and a competitor. I was vaulting with him (during practice) for two hours – just me and him – because he wants to get it right. I’ve seen a lot of progress from him in the last few weeks and I expect him to hit the marks he wants.”

Petersen said that pole vaulting is half-mental and half-physical, and he even has a superstition where he warms up with the same, lighter pole in every meet. He said his goals for the season are to hit 14-6 and to qualify for the state finals. In his first trip to the Class 3A meet in 2015, he failed to record a height, and last season he hit 13-6 but didn’t get past the preliminary round.

He said that as a freshman, he picked up on the event relatively well and even made varsity his first year because of an injury to a teammate.

Despite four years of pole vaulting, through the ups and downs, the thrill of making it over the bar still provides an adrenaline rush.

“I don’t think about it much when I’m in the air, it’s when I’m coming down where I’m like, ‘OK, that was awesome,’” Petersen said with a laugh. “When I’m going up, that’s really go time where you have to focus and you have to listen to what your coach says and focus on big knee drive and swinging your leg up and getting up and over the bar.

“You just feel on top of the world, you just feel in awe and in shock and feel so happy [breaking your PR]. When you get a PR, you almost get greedy. You want to do another one. It’s kind of disappointing when you finally get out once you get a PR. It’s like, ‘Great, I got a PR, but I could have gotten higher than that.’”

“Jack didn’t have his best stuff today,” Cavanaugh said. “His breaking ball wasn’t as competitive as it usually was. He wasn’t getting them to swing and miss like he usually does. He wasn’t getting them to chase like he usually does. ... I thought he did a good job of pitching with what the rest of us have to pitch with.”

While Mizgalski said his breaking pitches weren’t as sharp as usual, he made up for it with his bat. In the top of the third, Mizgalski broke a scoreless tie with a three-run double to the leftfield alley to give the Spartans the lead for good.

“Usually right when you hit it, you know if it’s a hit or not, but I didn’t know if the center fielder was especially fast or something like that,” Mizgalski said. “Once I saw it get by him, I knew that was a big hit for us.”

Carlsen, who picked up the save, went 2 for 3 with two RBI singles.

Batavia’s bats woke up after Mizgalski was pulled from the game, with two

singles off senior James Marcinkowski in the bottom of the sixth and two hits off Carlsen in the seventh.

By the numbers: The Spartans collected seven hits, including two each from Carlsen and Marcinkowski, while Mizgalski had his three-run double and Tyler Didio and Austin Mereness each added singles.

Beyond the stats: Carlsen appeared to injure his left wrist on a play in the top of the fifth when he tried to avoid a tag getting back to first base on a fly out by Mizgalski. Carlsen stayed in the game, hitting an RBI single in the sixth. However, when getting the ball back from Sycamore catcher Matthew Cusumano in the bottom of the seventh, he caught the softly returned ball with his bare right hand.

They said it: “He was whimpering, I could tell on his first swing,” Cavanaugh said of Carlsen’s wrist. “He gutted it out and got a good save.”

Up next: The Spartans host Geneseo at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sycamore Park.

Their five-game winning streak was snapped in a 2-0 loss to Kankakee in a weather-shortened, four-inning game Saturday.

Freshman Tommy Hansen (Genoa-Kingston) has seen his playing time increase each month of the season, and his top hitting performance came April 25 in a 11-4 win against Highlands. Hansen was 4 for 4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

He has a .294 batting average, a .340 on-base percentage and two RBIs on the season.

Leif Williams (DeKalb) and the Claremont Colleges rugby team won the National Small College Rugby Organization National Championship on April 30 at Infinity Park in Glendale, California. The Pac West Regional champions beat Xavier University, 22-12, in a national semifinal. In Sunday’s national championship game, Claremont beat Tufts University, 65-0.

Perfection in the regular season during conference play carried into the postseason for the Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team. The Warhawks and Meg Cohrs (Kaneland) swept Wisconsin-La Crosse over the weekend to claim the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.

Cohrs, a freshman mathematics major, was 1 for 1 with a run scored and two walks in a 4-2 win in Game 1.

The Warhawks wrapped up the league title with a 5-0 win Sunday. The Elburn native has a .391 batting average with seven doubles, five home runs and 40 RBIs on the season.

Whitewater has won 13 straight games, and Cohrs was 2 for 3 with a run scored, a double and two RBIs

as the Warhawks clinched their 11th WIAC regular season championship last Friday. It was the third regular season title in the past four years for the Warhawks (36-7, 14-0 WIAC), who are ranked 13th in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Whitewater was undefeated in conference play for the first time since 2009.

Junior left fielder Lauren Zick (Kaneland) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored as St. John’s made history with a 12-3 win in a series sweep at Seton Hall. Zick hits leadoff and has been a table-setter for the Red Storm offense. She has a .325 batting average, three doubles and 12 RBIs. The Red Storm’s sweep gave them their second Big East title in three years and clinched the most wins in school history. St. John’s (31-15, 17-4 Big East) has swept five straight conference series and has won nine games in a row.

A third-round loss in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Baseball Tournament at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Missouri, didn’t stop Jared Johnson (DeKalb) and the Central Methodist baseball team.

With eight wins in its past 10 games, the Eagles (41-14) got back to their winning ways and are in the

tournament semifinals. In a 6-1 win in 10 innings against Culver-Stockton on Sunday, Johnson, Central’s leadoff man and third baseman, was 1 for 4 with a run scored. Johnson has been an offensive catalyst all season, with a .374 batting average. He has 67 runs scored, 15 doubles and six homers. He also has 33 RBIs and 14 steals.

Cooper Vinz (Sycamore) also is tearing it up on offense. Now a junior with Missouri-St. Louis, he has a .356 batting average to go along with 38 runs scored, eight doubles, a triple, six home runs and 41 RBIs. Johnson and Vinz were teammates last season at Kishwaukee College.

Carroll College shortstop Jake Langford (Genoa-Kingston) has a .357 batting average. He has 10 doubles, a homer and 19 RBIs for the Pioneers.

In a 10-5 loss to Millikin in the season finale Saturday, the 5-foot-11 junior was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and his first homer of the season.

Elgin sophomore Austin Jacox (Sycamore) has a .300 batting average. He has 22 runs scored, nine doubles and 20 RBIs for the Spartans. Joe Laudont (Kaneland) is a freshman catcher for Elgin and has four doubles, a triple, homer and 17 RBIs. Laudont has 11 assists and has caught 9 of 30 base stealers. He has only committed one error this season behind the plate.

DeKALB – For the Sycamore baseball team under coach Jason Cavanaugh, getting to 20 wins has become the standard.

The Spartans reached the benchmark again with a 5-3 victory over Batavia in a nonconference game afternoon at Northern Illinois University’s Ralph McKinzie Field – but needed to hold on to get it.

“This is Year 21 as a varsity coach and I think it’s been 19 out of 21 (with 20 wins), and that’s a mark, as a coach, you always go after,” Cavanaugh said.

“With this year, I think 25 is the number. I want to get to 25 and there’s nine or whatever games left, and hopefully we can keep winning – and winning these close games.”

Carlsen forced Brent Norkus into an RBI groundout to second baseman Jason Wittenberg and – with runners on second and third – Jake Robinson hit a sharp line drive that Wittenberg caught, and then Tyler Munoz grounded out to end the threat.

“It shows that we’re playing well as a team,” Sycamore senior ace Jack Mizgalski said about hitting the 20-win mark. “What’s most important is how you’re playing coming into playoffs.

You can be 0-16, but you play well going into the playoffs, that doesn’t matter at all.”

Sycamore has now won 10 of its past 11 games.

The Spartans got an ugly but effective performance out of Mizgalski, who allowed two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

He was pulled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with 106 pitches.

So what do you do?

No. 1, pray for rain.

And, No. 2, if you’re the Cubs, make a T-shirt.

“As Miggy wants me to put on a T-shirt: ‘DWI. Deal with it,’ ” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said, referring to veteran catcher Miguel Montero.

“So that’s something we may do in the near future.”

Monday’s rainout – after a one-hour, 16-minute delay – creates a day-night doubleheader at 1:10 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.

Tuesday. Monday’s scheduled starter, Jake Arrieta, slides to Tuesday afternoon against Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela (4-1, 2.84 ERA).

“When you go to Colorado, you’re always looking, hopefully, to have some kind of a rested bullpen,” Maddon said before the game, looking at the downpour from the visitors dug-

out at Coors Field.

Maddon not only has an extra day of rest for his depleted bullpen, but he also has a ninth relief pitcher – with right-hander Dylan Floro added Monday night when the Cubs put outfielder Jason Heyward on the disabled list (sprained finger).

Stay tuned for a 10th reliever Tuesday as the rules of doubleheader engagement allow teams to add a 26th player to their roster for the day.

Szczur traded

Outfielder Matt Szczur was traded Monday to the Padres for minor-league pitcher Justin Hancock.

Szczur, who had played all three outfield spots for the Cubs, was designated for assignment Saturday to make room for left-hander Rob Zastryzny to be promoted from Iowa to help the depleted bullpen.

Hancock, 26, who spent his first six professional seasons as a starter, was 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 10 relief appearances this year for San Diego’s Double-A affiliate (with 11 strikeouts and seven walks in 13 innings). He was assigned to Double-A Tennessee.

Spartans’ seventh-inning rally comes up short

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore softball team had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday, but couldn’t complete the rally in a 5-3 loss to Ottawa on senior night.

Trailing 5-1, Sycamore loaded the bases in the seventh with a double by Haley Trela, a single by Amanda Swedberg and a walk by Faith Reynolds.

Senior Lexi Gordon hit a deep fly ball that was dropped to score one run.

But Ottawa (15-6, 8-4) coach Adam Lewis moved his starting pitcher Sloan Gayan back to the mound after she moved to first base after five scoreless innings.

After Joslin Peck struck out, Hannah Mizgalski scorched a single in the hole between second and third, scoring

another run to bring the score to 5-3.

Gayan then struck out Kayleigh Reifsteck, who had the only hit against her in the first five innings, to end the game.

“She’s a really good pitcher and it was a nice challenge to face her,” Reifsteck said.

Gayan shut down the Spartans offense, allowing only one hit in five innings as the starter and one hit when she came back to the circle from first base for the save. She had six strikeouts in the start and two in relief.

“She did a good job coming in and closing it down,” Lewis said. “We had bases loaded and two outs left to get.

That’s not an easy task.”

Sycamore (8-18-1, 2-10) starting pitcher Mizgalski had a rough first inning, allowing three runs, two unearned, but settled in to finish the game only giving up two more runs.

“First inning, I was just getting a little bit of jitters out,” Mizgalski said.

“As the game kept going on, I had really good defense behind me, so I had really good trust in them and I felt more comfortable on the mound.”

Sycamore scored its first run of the game in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Peck, driving home Faith Reynolds.

“The wins may not be there, but you can still fight hard every day and I think our kids do a good job making sure that happens,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said.

By the numbers: For Sycamore, Mizgalski went 2 for 4 with an RBI and struck out three batters. Trela went 1 for 2 with a run scored and got hit by a pitch twice. Swedberg went 1 for 4 with a run scored. Reynolds went 1 for 3 with a run and a walk. Reifsteck went 2 for 4, and Anna Criswell went 1 for 3.

For Ottawa, Gayan went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Molly Harris went 1 for 3 with two runs, and Jenna Nink went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Beyond the stats: In the top of the first inning, the Spartans had Ottawa’s Jazzy Bowman in a run-down between third and home, but third baseman Criswell couldn’t handle the throw from catcher Gordon. Bowman scored on the play, and the Pirates would add another in the inning to take a threerun lead.

They said it: “We have to execute better in the first inning,” Carpenter said, “That’s two unearned runs that they got on a little misplay here by us. When you lose by two, it makes you reflect a little harder about that play now that you can look back.”

Up next: Sycamore plays at Geneseo at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Ottawa hosts Yorkville at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Huskies No. 3 seed in MAC tournament: Northern Illinois closed out its

regular season with a series victory over Toledo and will be the No. 3 seed in the Mid-American Conference championships.

The Huskies (30-19, 15-9 MAC West) will play No. 6 seed Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. During the regular season, the Huskies didn’t play the RedHawks (29-22, 14-10 MAC East).

NIU has won nine of its past 10 games heading into the tournament.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Huskies add two: NIU announced it has signed Marlo Brown and Safir Daow to its men’s basketball program.

Daow, a South Sudan native, played three seasons at Victory Rock Prep in Sarasota, Florida, and averaged 12.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game last year. Brown was a four-year starter at Southfield Christian in Michigan and played a postgraduate season at DME Academy In Daytona Beach, Florida. At Southfield Christian, Brown

helped lead the Eagles to a pair of state championships and scored 1,630 points and grabbed 1,193 rebounds – the fifth most career rebounds in state history.

Maric transfers to DePaul, reports say:

Former NIU big man Marin Maric has transferred to DePaul, according to multiple reports, including Eric Bossi of Rivals. Maric, a 6-foot-11 center, averaged 14.1 points and 8.4 rebounds a game last season for the Huskies.

CHURCH SOFTBALL

Christ Community opens season with a win: The league champion last season,

Christ Community I opened up the season with a 12-6 win over Sycamore First Baptist. Chris Progne earned the win, while Troy Dukes homered for Christ Community and Seth Miller hit a triple for First Baptist.

Christ Community II beat Sycamore Methodist, 17-3, and David Harbecke earned the win. Immanuel Lutheran defeated DeKalb Methodist, 15-6, with Ted Strack earning the win.

Sycamore St. Mary cruised past DeKalb Latter Day Saints, 21-0, with Justin Oprins earning the win.

The long losing streak looked as if it could end for the DeKalb baseball team.

However, Morris took the lead in the top of the seventh inning and knocked off the Barbs, 7-6, on Monday afternoon in DeKalb.

The Barbs (6-20, 0-10 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) led 6-2 after the fourth inning and 6-5 heading into the seventh before suffering their 16th consecutive loss.

Derek Kyler, James Balli and Bryce Wheeler all went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Matt Searls was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Kyler had a double and a triple, Searls had a double and Max Lange had a double and scored a run.

Kaneland falls late to Yorkville: The Knights allowed three runs late and lost, 4-3, at home to Yorkville, which is the Northern Illinois Big 12 East champion this season.

Kaneland was leading 3-1 before the Foxes scored three runs in the top of the sixth.

Luke Gomes went 2 for 3 with two

runs scored. Luke Calabrese was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Jack Marshall had a double and a run and Josh Norman added an RBI. IC falls at Serena: The Timberwolves lost, 6-3, on the road to Serena.

Trevor Guerra suffered the loss for the Timberwolves, who fell to 6-12 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

Bears sign LB Dan Skuta to 1-year contract

LAKE FOREST– Veteran linebacker Dan Skuta has signed a one-year contract with the Bears.

The 31-year-old Skuta – released by Jacksonville last month – has appeared in 112 games, including 26 with the Jaguars.

Skuta signed a five-year contract worth $20.5 million in 2015 that included a little more than $8 million guaranteed.

He totaled 55 tackles and 1½ sacks in two seasons in Jacksonville. His role was marginalized after the drafting of linebacker Myles Jack last year. Skuta previously played for San Francisco (2013-14) and Cincinnati (2009-12).

The Bears announced the signing Monday. They are coming off a last-place finish in the NFC North at 3-13.

That causes your attention to be drawn to the site of the injury, which you will then shelter from further damage. For example, when you sprain your ankle, the pain and swelling automatically lead you to favor the injured side.

Without the inflammation response, our wounds and injuries would not heal.

However, things can go awry. Sometimes the immune system will issue an inflammation response against otherwise innocuous substances, like pollen, certain foods or pet dander. The result is allergies, which can range from annoying to life-threatening.

Even more challenging is chronic inflammation, an immune response that lasts for months or even years. It happens when the body targets its own cells and tissues, which can result in disease. For example, rheumatoid arthritis is caused when joints throughout the body are permanently inflamed.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease caused by inflammation. Inflammation of the bowel can cause conditions like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease and ulcerative colitis. And inflammation plays a role in cardiovascular disease, heart attack and some cancers.

In our next column, we’ll dive into the second half of your question – can food have an effect on inflammation?

Dear Doctors: It seems as though we’re hearing more and more about inflammation and how it causes disease. What is inflammation and how does it work? And is it really possible what you eat makes a difference?

Dear Reader: You’ve asked some pretty big questions, so we’re going to answer them in two parts. In this column, we’ll explore inflammation itself. We’ll address whether what you eat can have an effect on inflammation (spoiler alert – yes) in our next column.

First of all, you’re correct that there’s been an increase in awareness about the concept of inflammation in the last few years. At its most basic, it’s the body’s localized response to injury or infection. When you catch a cold, scrape your knee or get a sunburn, inflammation is the cause of the swelling, heat, pain and redness that follow.

And while it sounds simple, the pathways and mechanisms of inflammation, as well as the many ways it can act upon the body, are really quite complex.

The human body is perpetually on guard for anything that may harm it. This includes physical injury to skin, bone, organs or tissues, or potentially dangerous invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, pathogens or other harmful stimuli. When damage is detected, the body’s immune system rallies.

Many different types of immune cells “wake up” and begin to release a variety of substances, each of which causes a rapid series of protective responses. This is part of a process known as acute inflammation.

Blood vessels expand so they can quickly send additional blood to the injured area.

They also will temporarily become more permeable, so as to flood the site of damage with specialized chemicals produced by white bloods cells, which are our first line of defense against infection. These responses are what cause the injured area to turn red, feel hot and become swollen.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been in a two-year relationJeanne ship with a man Phillips who is loving and intelligent. We have talked about marriage since the beginning.

I have traditional values, while he doesn’t believe the institution of marriage is necessary.

This would be a second marriage for both of us. Our children are grown, so having kids doesn’t factor into this decision. He says he’s willing to marry me because he knows how important marriage is to me. I was raised in the church, and living together not only makes me uncomfortable, but is looked down upon by my family.

For a while he wanted to wait for a few of his financial issues to be worked out. They have been, but he doesn’t seem ready to move forward. Another issue is while we are compatible in most ways, we are polar opposites when it comes to politics and religion. It bothers me, but he says we don’t have to agree on everything. I feel that to have a happy relationship, a couple’s essential values and morals should be similar.

He never wants to discuss political issues, and it makes things difficult and awkward. I know he doesn’t feel the same as I do, but he doesn’t want to start an argument or discussion.

We never really fight, but I’d like to be able to talk about what is going on in the world.

I’m wondering if a relationship with so many differences can survive. He does make me happy, and we have a very passionate, loving relationship. – Opposites Attract In Washington Dear Opposites Attract: Opposites often attract, that’s true. And, depending upon the people involved, it can lead to successful marriages. However, couples in a solid relationship need to be able to communicate honestly with each other, and your gentleman friend appears not to be capable of doing it fully, which is not a good sign. If you plan on taking this relationship to the next level, I recommend the two of you have premarital counseling. Or, if he would prefer, consult a licensed marriage and family counselor.

Dear Abby: My daughter is 3. She has reached the point where she notices and comments upon others’ appearance. Generally, her comments are of the “that lady has a big bottom!” variety, spoken loudly and within earshot. We are working on the concepts of manners and tact, in addition to learning people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. In the meantime, however, have you any suggestions for how to address the subjects of her comments? I’ve offered some version of “I’m sorry, we’re still working on our manners,” but it seems to imply I’m teaching her to make her hurtful comments in a quieter voice. – Embarrassed In Kentucky Dear Embarrassed: You are overthinking this. Children sometimes say the darndest things. The way you’re handling it is just fine.

I hardly think anyone will be wounded for life because of anything a 3-year-old utters.

Luckily a bridge column is too short to run that full gamut; however, when playing a deal, it starts as an amusement, but can turn nasty.

Sometimes, though, that downturn will be self-inflicted. Look at the South hand in today’s diagram. What would you bid after the given start to the auction?

This deal occurred online with computer programs playing in various positions at the 15 tables.

Almost every South overcalled one spade. Then West rebid one no-trump, and most Norths strangely refused to raise to two spades.

When East retreated to two diamonds, South weirdly doubled, North removed to two spades, and South passed. There were 10 scores of plus 200 for 11 tricks taken.

At some tables, North did raise to two spades, but then South passed.

West balanced with a takeout double, East pulled to three clubs, and South passed again. Weirder and weirder!

With such a skewed hand but strong trumps, jump straight to four spades. Ignore the vulnerability and hope to buy something useful in the dummy. It might even silence the opponents. Here, five clubs is down only one and five diamonds down two, both cheap saves.

At my table, West led the spade ace against four spades, and East sensibly discarded the diamond two.

West shifted to a low club. South ruffed, played a heart to the ace and returned a heart. West took the trick and now fell from grace by shifting to the diamond king. South won, ruffed a heart, drew trumps and claimed an overtrick.

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice of Proposed Change in Schedule of Rates to Customers of Aqua Illinois, Inc. in Ellwood Greens Subdivision within DeKalb County May 1, 2017 Aqua Illinois, Inc. hereby gives notice to the public that it has filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) a proposed change in its rate schedules for wastewater service in Ellwood Greens Subdivision within DeKalb County.

AQUA ILLINOIS' RATE REQUEST If this rate request is granted in full as filed, it would translate to: ~The monthly flat rate residential bill would increase by $22.95, ($0.77 per day) to $68.69. ~ A full day's worth of wastewater service for $2.29 per day.

The proposed increase in rates is set out in Tariff ILL. C.C. No. 50, Section 6 filed with the ICC. The last rate case impacting Ellwood Greens customers was filed on April 6, 2011. This request will undergo a review by the ICC for up to 11 months. The approximate date of the change(s), if approved by the ICC within the statutory 11-month process, is March 30, 2018. THE RATES YOU PAY DIRECTLY BENEFIT YOUR COMMUNITY Aqua Illinois will have invested approximately $200,000 in infrastructure and other wastewater quality improvements through the period covered in this proceeding. They have included wastewater disinfection system upgrades to enhance water quality, representing an investment of approximately $865 per household. All system improvements will directly contribute to increased reliability and enhanced process improvements for source-of-supply and water treatment. Examples include: ~ Wastewater Treatment Facility improvements including new pumps, new disinfection process and equipment, new aeration equipment, improved backup power and improved building and grounds. ~ Lift Stations improvements including pump replacements and rebuilds, controls and sta tion hardware upgrades, and installation of generators and remote monitoring systems have improved overall efficiency, reliability and compliance with IEPA standards, as well as reduced issues caused by power outage and improved response time. ~ Overall Systems Improvements including collection system enhancements, addition of vehicles and other equipment to improve reliability.
