French pick pro-EU Macron for president

PARIS – Ripping up France’s political map, French voters elected independent centrist Emmanuel Macron as the country’s youngest president Sunday, delivering a resounding victory to the unabashedly pro-European former investment banker and dashing the populist dream of far-right rival Marine Le Pen. Macron, who had never run for office before, celebrated with thousands of jubilant, flag-waving supporters outside the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday night.

The European anthem “Ode to Joy” played as he strode out to address the swelling crowd.

“France has won!” he said. “Everyone said it was impossible. But they do not know France!”

Marine Le Pen, his far-right opponent in the runoff, quickly called the 39-year-old Macron to concede after voters rejected her “Frenchfirst” nationalism by a large margin. Le Pen’s performance punctured her hopes that the populist wave which swept Donald Trump into the White House and led Britain to vote to leave the EU would also carry her to France’s presidential Elysee Palace.

Macron told the Louvre crowd that the Le Pen vote was one of “anger, disarray.”

“I will do everything in the five years to come so there is no more reason to vote for the extremes,” he said.

Earlier, in a solemn televised victory speech, Macron vowed to heal the social divisions exposed by France’s acrimonious election campaign.

“I know the divisions in our nation that led some to extreme votes. I respect them,” he declared, unsmiling. “I know the anger, the anxiety, the doubts that a large number of you also expressed. It is my responsibility to hear them.”

The result wasn’t close: With about 90 percent of votes counted, Macron had 64 percent support. Le Pen had 36 percent – about double what Jean-Marie Le Pen, her father and co-founder of their National Front party, achieved at the same stage in the 2002 presidential election.

Congratulatory messages poured in from abroad. Trump tweeted congratulations on what he called Macron’s “big win” and said he looked forward to working with the new French leader. Macron has said he wants continued intelligence-sharing with the United States and cooperation at the United Nations and hopes to persuade Trump not to pull the U.S. out of a global accord fighting climate change.

Sycamore bike path project set to get underway this summer

SYCAMORE – The project to install a bike path connecting the Great Western Trail to Sycamore Community Park will get $106,000 in funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

City Engineer Mark Bushnell said construction will begin this summer, with paving likely to occur about September or October.

“The goal is to have the path installed and usable this year,” he said.

The state’s contribution using federal pass-through funds represents 80 percent of the total cost of the project, with the city of Sycamore to pay the remaining 20 percent, or $26,500.

The path is intended to give bicyclists and pedestrians along Airport Road a safer route, because the road is considered dangerous with fast-moving traffic and is expected to get busier as the park district’s Action 2020 features develop. The section of road also does not have lighting.

Bushnell said the goal is to get

bicyclists away from traffic.

“It’ll be a paved pathway adjacent to Airport Road, so riders won’t have to use the shoulder to get to the park,” Bushnell said.

The city also is working with the state on installing more pavement markings and signs, he said.

In September, the Sycamore City Council approved an agreement with the Sycamore Park District to construct the path. The park district owns most of the property where the path will be installed and will be responsible for maintenance.

The council voted Monday to ap-

prove an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation outlining plans for funding and implementing the project.

The 1,700-foot path extension will run along the west side of Airport Road from state Route 64 to the main entrance of the Sycamore Community Sports Complex.

Bushnell said that because the project is using federal funds, it must go through a state bidding process, which is set to begin June 16.

The public bidding process will determine which construction company will build the path, he said.

20th Cinco de Mayo Festival celebrated

new@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Even Mother Nature got into the spirit during the weekend’s 20th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival, which raises money for local nonprofits and a Kishwaukee College scholarship fund.

“This is the first time in three years that it hasn’t rained, so a lot of people came out,” festival board member Sandie Maahs said. “This is a good way to give back to the community and a good way to get to know people in the community.

It’s a great family-friendly event for everyone.”

Taxco restaurant owner Jesus Romero spearheaded the 20th annual event, which featured Mexican folk dancing, mariachi music and authentic Mexican food, while pony rides, a climbing wall, bounce houses and a petting zoo kept children entertained.

Hundreds turned out. Half the proceeds go to participating nonprofit organizations, while the other half goes to the Kish scholarship fund.

“In Mexico, celebrations are all about families and community, so we try to do a little something for everyone to have fun while celebrating and supporting nonprofits,” Romero said. “Sycamore is a great philanthropist community, and I want to give back. Investing in your community is the best investment you can make. It’s a great feeling to share this community event and share our culture.”

Kristina Garcia, executive director of Conexion Comunidad, said the organization has been involved with Cinco de Mayo for years because the overall goal of the event is to raise money for nonprofits.

“You have to make a great community by participating and helping to fulfill the needs of its members,” she said.”It’s important for kids who have a strong cultural background to preserve that. It’s good to share our cultures and to appreciate them.”

de Mayo gives the organization the opportunity to showcase the group’s diversity and inclusiveness, while raising awareness of what it offers the community.

“This brings the community together,” she said. “Residents of both DeKalb and Sycamore look forward to this every year. We want to teach our kids about giving back through our art and dance.”

Sophia Ruvalcaba, 11, a member of Rayitos del Sol, said the group’s performance, “Went really well.”

She has been performing Mexican folk dance for many years, and said she enjoys dancing in front of large groups of people.

“This is part of my Mexican culture, and I’m proud to be Mexican,” the Cortland Elementary fifth-grader said. “I love to be with my friends and to dance. People were happy and excited to see us today, which is nice. It feels good to see people enjoying what we do.”

Angie Knight of Sycamore came to Cinco de Mayo specifically to see the dancers. She said she and her family look forward to the performances, and the Mexican food, every year.

“The dancers are great, and they’re so cute,” she said. “This is

DeKALB – A perfect balance of art, culture and expressionism was struck Saturday during ARTigras, an annual joint venture between the city and Northern Illinois University.

The celebration of the arts took place in various locations around the NIU campus and at local venues.

At the NIU Art Museum in Altgeld Hall were the exhibits “Theoretical Mockery: Satirical Prints by Sidney Chafetz” and “What a Frightful Spectacle! Lithographs of Honore’ Daumier.” In the south galleries was the exhibit “A Tale of Donkeys and Elephants; Satire with the Wink of a Fox,” which featured political cartoons dating as far back as 1750.

“NIU is involved with the whole ARTigras,” said Melanie Parks, associate dean in the College of Visual & Performing Arts. “We were instrumental in trying to find talent, supportive of getting the venue and advertising. It was a group effort.”

In addition, a costume contest was held for those attending the variety show in costume.

A young boy won first place and a Village Commons Bookstore gift card. His costume? Appropriately enough, an artist.

DeKALB – Through 20 years of dealing in antiques, Jeff and Mara Metzger of Sandwich had always talked about buying and renovating a building to sell antiques and other home décor.

“We started out buying antiques as a hobby, and it just sort of turned into a business,” Metzger said. “You get affected by the hunt, and you start to accumulate, and it gets to the point you have to open up a business and start selling some of it.”

After searching DeKalb County for the right location, the couple saw Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown DeKalb, a place where they have eaten for 15 years, could make for a great antique store.

Metzger, a former DeKalb County Board member, bought the eastern

dining area of the restaurant at 218 E. Lincoln Highway earlier this year and is now weeks away from opening his new store, Antique Treasures.

“My wife knows most of the dealers downtown and we visit them on a regular basis,” Metzger said. “This is a very close community, and we have been very welcomed by the group of dealers down here because the more dealers you have in town, the better draw you’ll get.”

Metzger said he is setting up for a final inspection by the DeKalb Fire Department and city staff next week.

After that, he hopes for a soft opening the next week and a grand opening soon after that.

Although the grand opening of the store might coincide with the beginning of demolition for the $7.5 million Cornerstone project a block over, Metzger said he is not worried after speaking with principal developer,

Illinois schools opt for virtual summer learning programs

WESTMONT – Some Illinois school districts are revamping their summer school programs this year with virtual programs designed to allow students to complete lessons outside of the classroom.

But education experts are worried that online learning programs aren’t the best approach for younger students, the Chicago Tribune reported. They are questioning whether the move is because of the school districts’ desire to cut costs and redirect money at a time when the state is $13 billion behind in allocating school funds due to the budget impasse.

“They’re thinking it’s cost-effective, but it may not be learning-effective,” said Rena Shifflet, an associate professor at Illinois State University’s School of Teaching and Learning. “Illinois has kind of backed school districts into a corner. They’re doing the most with what they have.”

The Maercker School District opted for the program because of fewer students enrolling in its summer programs because of transportation issues and kids’ busy summer schedules.

Gang helped investigators in officers’ shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago police said two plainclothes officers shot last week were mistaken for rival street-gang members and that other gang members cooperated with police when that became clear.

Chicago Police Commander Brendan Deenihan spoke to reporters Sunday about the South Side shooting.

Deenihan said several La Raza gang members helped identify a driver and a shooter who opened fire from a van Tuesday. He said they knew it was “a different game” once they realized police, not rivals, were shot as they sat in an unmarked car.

Police on Saturday announced attempted murder charges against the alleged driver, 18-year-old Angel Gomez. The shooter is still being sought.

One officer was shot in the arm and hip and the other in the back. They’ve both been released from hospital.

Chicago U.S. appeals court considers TV coverage

CHICAGO – A Chicago-based federal appeals court is looking into allowing TV cameras to cover some of its proceedings.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin has reported that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could join state high courts and several federal appellate courts in permitting live broadcasts.

History museum to honor designer Carolina Herrera

CHICAGO – The Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum is honoring fashion designer Carolina Herrera .

The 78-year-old Venezuelan-American designer will receive the museum’s Designer of Excellence Award on May 15 in Chicago.

The museum’s council gives the award to designers who it says have “indelibly left their mark on the fashion world.”

Past recipients include Bob Mackie, Sonia Rykiel and Geoffrey Beene.

Herrera’s first ready-to-wear collection debuted in 1981 and she opened a New York business shortly afterward. Celebrities like Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon have worn her designs along with first ladies like Michelle Obama and Laura Bush.

4 killed when car collides head-on with Chicago bus

CHICAGO – Four people were killed when the car they were in collided head-on early Sunday with a Chicago city bus, police said.

The car, which was speeding, hit a parked vehicle before it veered out of control into the oncoming Chicago Transit Authority bus at around 6 a.m. on the city’s west side, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman.

People in the East Garfield Park neighborhood rushed to the scene and tried to pull victims out of the car, but they couldn’t because smoke and flames around the car were too intense, witness Malinda Demery told reporters.

“We had to get them out. They were pinned inside there,” Commander Curtis Hudson, with the Chicago Fire Department, said later.

Television footage showed the twisted wreckage of the car in the middle of the street in front of the No. 20 CTA bus, which appeared largely intact.

The bus driver and four passengers were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, another police spokesman, Officer Michael Carroll, said later Sunday.

There were no other car passengers, he said. Police did not immediately release the identities of those who died.

The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times cited police as saying they were all in their 20s.

The police department’s major accident unit and the CTA were investigating the crash.

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed joy Sunday night at meeting with the 82 Chibok schoolgirls newly freed from Boko Haram extremists – then jolted the country by announcing he was leaving for London immediately for medical checkups as fears for his health continue.

“We’ve always made it clear that we will do everything in our power to ensure the freedom & safe return of our daughters” and all captives of Boko Haram, Buhari said on his Twitter account.

Minutes later, the 74-year-old president startled Africa’s most populous nation with the news of his departure. Buhari, who has missed three straight weekly Cabinet meetings, spent a month and a half in London on medical leave earlier this year and said he’d never been as sick in his life. The exact nature of his illness remained unclear.

“There is no cause for worry” about this latest medical leave, a statement from his office said, adding that the length of Buhari’s stay in London will be determined by his doctors.

Photos released by the government showed the rail-thin president standing and addressing the Chibok schoolgirls at his official residence Sunday evening, a day after their release.

“The president was delighted to receive them, and he promised that all that is needed

to be done to reintegrate them into the society will be done,” adviser Femi Adesina said. “He promised that the presidency will personally supervise their rehabilitation.”

The young women have been handed over to government officials who will supervise their re-entry into society, Adesina said. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which helped negotiate the girls’ release along with the Swiss government, said they would be reunited with their families soon.

Five Boko Haram commanders were released in exchange for the girls’ freedom, a Nigerian government official said Sunday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorized to speak to reporters on the matter. Neither Nigeria’s government nor Boko Haram, which has links to the Islamic State group, gave details about the exchange.

Parents of the schoolgirls were waiting for a government list of names of those who had been freed.

Some parents of the kidnapped girls gathered in the capital, Abuja, to celebrate the release, while others expressed anxiety over the fate of the 113 girls who remain missing after the mass abduction from a Chibok boarding school in 2014.

The Rev. Enoch Mark, whose two daughters have been among the missing, was still awaiting word if they were among those freed.

He emphasized that he considered all 82 of the girls to be his daughters “because most of them worship in my church.”

Tillerson’s right, wrong It was reassuring to hear Secretary of State Rex Tillerson tell his department Wednesday that “guiding all of our foreign policy actions are our fundamental values: our values around freedom, human dignity, the way people are treated.”

Less reassuring was Tillerson’s explanation of how the principle would be put into practice. When he followed his general explanation with an exhaustive tour of the world that did not mention human rights or values anywhere – not in North Korea, China, Russia, the Middle East or South America – he raised the question of how much his guiding principle will matter.

Tillerson was right to point out that the U.S. must safeguard its national security and economic prosperity if Americans are to “protect our ability to be that voice of our values now and forevermore.” And he was right that, to protect its security and economy, the U.S. at times must make allowances for dictators.

Secretaries of state always have heard such pleas from allies who are also human rights abusers, and they frequently (too frequently, in our view) have found it in the U.S.’s interest to indulge such pleas.

But Tillerson errs in a couple of fundamental ways.

First, he perpetuates a dangerous idea when he refers exclusively to “our values.” The ideals of free speech and expression, worship and assembly, and living in dignity, free of coercion, are universal values that apply as much to a person in Shanghai as in Springfield. Leaders such as Xi Jinping of China and Vladimir Putin of Russia often denigrate these as Western values as an excuse to deny freedom to their own people.

Second, he seems to put values in a basket of their own, separate from “America First” national interests. “So, it’s how do we advance our national security and economic interests on this hand, our values are constant over here,” he said. But values and their promotion are integral to U.S. national interests. Governments that are chosen by their people and that treat their populations fairly are more likely to interact fairly in the international sphere as well.

Corrupt autocracies such as Putin’s are more likely to whip up nationalist animosities to distract from their own illegitimacy. North Korea’s suffocating dictatorship helps make it a threat to peace.

Does Tillerson recognize that connection? The fact that his lengthy tour of the horizon, region by region, neglected to mention values isn’t a good sign. Keeping human rights and democracy at the forefront of diplomacy, along with economics and security, does not create “obstacles,” as Tillerson put it. Rather, it is an enduring source of American strength, a source that no totalitarian or authoritarian system can ever match.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker cellphones have changed the dynamics that surround police violence. Indisputable video evidence helps white Americans – if they are willing to wrestle with the issue, to be honest with themselves, to struggle with the contours of clear racism – to understand the profound grief of black parents, the fears of young black men, the anger of black activists.

Yet, some are not willing to see what is plainly before them.

There are still many white Americans who refuse to acknowledge the bigotry that stalks the criminal justice system. No matter how many times they see unambiguous proof of white officers abusing black citizens, they are able to persuade themselves that the victim is at fault.

That helps to explain why a South Carolina jury failed to convict former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager of murder charges in the 2015

shooting of Walter Scott, whom Slager stopped for a routine traffic violation.

Video shows Scott, who was unarmed, running away as Slager fires several times, striking Scott in the back. But the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Just days ago, Slager pled guilty to a lesser federal charge of violating Scott’s civil rights. In return, the state of South Carolina agreed not to re-try him on the murder charge.

But even those lesser sanctions are unlikely in a Justice Department run

by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He is among those who does not want to wrestle with the ugly reality of racism; he has made it clear that Americans of color cannot look to the Department of Justice for protection from those powerful forces who would deny basic rights to minority groups. In other words, he will not be dispensing justice.

In February, Sessions gave a speech in which he said that the Justice Department would stop monitoring troubled police departments, a tactic that the Obama administration had used to curb police misconduct, because such oversight might make cops less, ah, effective.

“We need, so far as we can, in my view, (to) help police departments get better, not diminish their effectiveness,” he said. “And I’m afraid we’ve done some of that. So we’re going to try to pull back on this, and I don’t think it’s wrong or mean or insensitive to civil rights or human rights.”

No, let’s not use the words “mean” or “insensitive.” Let’s call this what it is: cruel, wrongheaded, racist. Giving police officers free rein to execute innocent civilians will not only fail to stop crime, it’s likely to exacerbate it. Why would law-abiding citizens cooperate with a force that might turn on them and their sons?

The Obama administration’s Justice Department had started a long and painful course correction for police departments steeped in generations of bigotry and corrosive stereotypes about black men. But the new attorney general just reversed direction. He thinks an unjust criminal justice system is perfectly American.

Vulnerable Republicans grapple with ‘imperfect’ health bill

The Washington Post WASHINGTON – Republicans pushed a health care bill through the House Thursday that few lawmakers truly liked. They instead viewed the measure as a necessary step to demonstrate some sense of momentum and some ability to govern in GOP-controlled Washington.

Rather than embrace policy cobbled together designed to replace the 2010 Affordable Care Act, many Republicans simply decided the best move was to approve a flawed bill – and ram it through a flawed process – so that the Senate would get a chance to fix the House’s mistakes, setting up a major negotiation later this year.

House Republicans did so knowing that their votes will be portrayed by their Democratic opponents as ruthlessly denying millions of people health insurance and causing Americans already saddled with preexisting illness to shoulder higher costs.

And they did so knowing that there’s a chance the Senate will choke on the legislation or that House and Senate negotiators will deadlock and never agree to a final product – leaving them on record voting for a bill that

could have career-ending consequences.

“This bill is highly imperfect, imperfect, OK? There’s no doubt about that,” Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart said after supporting the legislation.

The Florida Republican – who represents a competitive district – waited until the last 24 hours to come on board, citing conversations with senators who vowed to address his concerns about how to handle the tens of thousands of his constituents who are signed up for the ACA insurance exchanges.

“Is this bill good? No, I don’t like it,” Diaz-Balart said, suggesting that voting for the bill would allow him to be part of future negotiations. “So my decision was, how do I stay involved?”

The other critical factor was a desire for the House GOP majority to show it can actually govern.

Inside the leadership team of House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., there was a gripping fear of what failure would mean for its future overseeing a chamber seemingly incapable of moving important legislation. Ryan had already pulled his American Health Care Act from the floor once, back in March, amid a rebellion on his left and right flanks regarding its shortcomings.

The initial game plan was to simply give up on repealing Obamacare and move on to a broad rewrite of the tax code. But inside the White House, President Donald Trump’s advisers became increasingly concerned about how little they had to show in terms of early victories. They helped nudge the hard line House Freedom Caucus and some members of the moderate Tuesday Group back to the bargaining table.

Lawmakers produced a deal that eventually brought all but one member of the Freedom Caucus into the fold, and Ryan’s team realized it was as close as Republicans had ever been to passing the legislation. At that point, wavering members faced pressure to be loyal to the speaker and show that the House could act.

The consequence of failure – which would have marked a second time six weeks after the humiliating first retreat – became a compelling reason to vote “yes.”

The legislation passed by the narrowest of margins, 217 to 213, with just two votes to spare. Just 20 Republicans opposed the legislation, at a time when independent political analysts rate about 40 GOP seats as potentially vulnerable in 2018. If Republicans lose 24 seats, they lose the majority.

A couple dozen Republicans took risky votes on legislation that, so far, has not proven to be particularly popular among voters.

One of those was sophomore Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., whose district favored Hillary Clinton by nearly 17 percentage points over Trump last year. Curbelo won re-election by a comfortable margin against a flawed Democrat and now finds himself near the top of Democratic target lists for 2018.

Curbelo held out until Thursday afternoon to decide how he would vote.

He met regularly with Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., the former chairman of the panel and a leading moderate who negotiated an extra $8 billion in the legislation to help lower premiums for those with pre-existing conditions.

Even with that key addition, Curbelo still wasn’t sold on the bill. Like many other late deciding Republicans, he placed his bet on the Senate after conversations with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., about his concerns that the tax credits in the House bill are not generous enough to help older workers who aren’t yet eligible for Medicare.

The latest tragic shooting of an unarmed black man – a child, really – occurred in a suburb of Dallas, Texas called Balch Springs. On April 29, as four teenagers were driving away from a house party, an overzealous police officer fired into the car, hitting 15-yearold Jordan Edwards in the head.

The location changes, but the basic details do not: a white officer, perhaps brimful of implicit biases about the criminality of black people, fires on an unarmed citizen, killing him. The officer claims that the shooting was justified because his life was in danger.

The video contradicts that scenario.

In this case, mercifully, police officials fired officer Roy Oliver after they saw the images for themselves.

They had initially claimed that the car carrying four teenagers was backing up toward Oliver “in an aggressive manner.”

In fact, video footage shows, the car was moving forward, away from Oliver, when he fired with an AR-15 rifle.

While he has not yet been charged, two Dallas County agencies, the sheriff’s department and the district attorney’s office, are investigating.

Allison’s program grew out of his long-standing love of European fairy tales and encounters with storytellers who opened up the possibilities of using fairy tales for self-examination among adult audiences.

Much like dream analysis, this approach poses the possibility of viewing the story narratives as metaphorical of our own psychodynamics, particularly in regard to developmental struggles on the way to maturity. The full resonance of the story is grasped through interactive dialogue between

teller and audience. The audience is afforded the opportunity to locate themselves in situations presented in the narrative.

The audience will be instilled with a curiosity and an appetite to investigate more of the rich heritage of stories bequeathed to us and what they can do to enrich our lives.

This program is free and intended for adults. While children may be entertained by the telling segment of the event, the discussion following the story will be geared toward a more mature audience. No registration is required.

The University of Illinois Extension will offer guided wildflower walks from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve, located one mile west of Genoa on State Route 72.

“The spring beauties are one of the most delicate flowers found first on the forest floor and research has shown they are critical for many native pollinators,” Peggy Doty, University of Illinois educator, said in a news release.

“The trillium have recently opened and the Virginia bluebells are carpeting the lowland forest. By Mother’s Day weekend, the forest will be still be putting on quite a display.”

Doty reminds people that it is illegal to remove plants from preservation areas.

All are welcome on the guided hikes.

There will be two local botanists available to guide people out onto the trails to see what is blooming and talk about each one.

“We will do walks starting at 9:30 a.m. and each half hour through the morning and then again at noon and one last walk at 1 p.m.,” Doty said in the release.

The trails are accessible for all abilities. There will be staff members in the center to talk about birds at the feeders and the displays.

Cogs’ freshmen making impact

ecarifio@shawmedia.com GENOA – Making state might be a long shot this year for a pair of Genoa-Kingston distance-running freshmen.

Joely Overstreet and Ryan Wade will just have to settle for rewriting the record books for the Cogs.

Both had outstanding performances Saturday at the G-K Invitational.

Wade ran the anchor leg of the winning 3,200-meter relay team, overcoming a five-second deficit in a lap and pacing the Cogs to an 11-second win in 9 minutes, 10.71 seconds. He also won the 1,600 in 4:55.97.

Overstreet won the 1,600 run on the girls side in 5:59.12 and was on the winning 3,200-relay team.

“I think I did OK,” Overstreet said.

“The wind was pretty bad.”

Both have already claimed the school’s freshman/sophomore record in multiple events. Overstreet has the 800 (2:35) and 1,600 (5:54) fresh/soph records, while Wade has the records in the 1,600 and 800 as well.

Both are shy of state qualifying times as the Class 2A sectionals fast approach – this week for Overstreet at home, next week at Rochelle for Wade.

Wade said he’s trying to stay realistic about his chances of making state.

“I don’t think I’m going to make state, but it’s always nice to push,” Wade said. “I still have three more years left, so there’s still tons of time.”

First-year coach TC Holterhaus said he’s been impressed with Wade so far.

“Overall he’s a heck of an athlete,” Holterhaus said. “I wish I had four of him. He’s a really good kid off the track, but on the track he’s a hard worker. I’m really excited I have him for three more years after this. I’m excited for the future for him and G-K track.”

Holterhaus said he didn’t know too much about Wade heading into the season, but that changed when he got onto the track and started beating upperclassmen.

“I talked to the cross country coach a little bit, and he told me about Ryan Wade,” Holterhaus said. “I saw him the first couple days and thought he was a freshman kid who might be pretty quick. But when we got out here doing time trials, he started beating my seniors and juniors. That’s when I knew there was something brewing there.”

Girls coach Barry Schmidt said he’s been impressed with the improvement Overstreet has shown this season.

“We knew she was a real good athlete,” Schmidt said. “She’s been consistent in the mile and it’s been good to see. She came back with a better mile today than she had on Tuesday.”

Overstreet said she wasn’t exactly expecting a record-setting level of success this early.

“I didn’t think I was going to do as well as I did,” Overstreet said. “I wanted to be better than I was in middle school, but I wasn’t expecting to do this well.”

Wade said he was fairly confident coming off a strong cross country season.

“I had pretty high expectations,” Wade said. “I performed well last year (in middle school, just falling short of a state bid),” Wade said. “And I did cross country, so I knew I could run fast and that’s what I expected, and I’ve been able to – usually getting under five (minutes in the 1,600).

“She ran real well in the 200 and lost out to the girl from Lutheran, who probably has a chance to contend for the state title,” H-BR coach Greg Burks said. “It’s hard to say, and you don’t want to make excuses about the wind, but I think she could have gotten down and challenged a pretty darn good time for pre-sectional without the conditions today.”

Indian Creek took seventh on the boys side with 31 points, with freshman Michael Gaston winning the 100 (11.65) and taking second in the 200 by 0.27 seconds with a 23.90.

Holterhaus said he was pleased with some of the individual performance the Cogs turned in, including Dylan Kribs, who hit 18 feet in the long jump for the first time to take sixth. He also said he was pleased with Jake Hansen, who won the long jump (18-11). He said he was also impressed with the 400 and 800 relays, which were down a usual runner.

Both were victorious, with the 400 team of Kribs, Dan Guardi, Michael Tryznka and Max Materazzi winning in 45.63. The same four won the 800 in 1:37.16.

GENOA – The Genoa-Kingston girls track team defended its home track Saturday, while the boys team fell short.

The Cogs won the girls portion of their home meet with 155.83 points, beating Hampshire by 11.5. The boys finished with 150, 23 points behind Woodstock.

“The girls did a nice job going into some windy conditions,” G-K girls coach Barry Schmidt said. “I thought they performed real well.”

Cogs boys coach TC Holterhaus said he was happy with some individual performances but was hoping for a team title.

“We weren’t happy with the second-place result obviously,” the firstyear coach said, “but we’re going to use it as a learning experience with our big conference meet coming up next Thursday.”

On the girls side, Hinckley-Big Rock was sixth with 55.33 points, with a lot of the scoring coming from Audrey Harrod. For the second time in three years, Harrod set the meet record in the 800-meter run, this time finishing in 2 minutes, 18.43 seconds to cruise to a 21.4 second win. She also won the 400 (1:01.31) and was less than two seconds behind Rockford Lutheran’s Courtney Sockwell in the 200 (25.41 for Sockwell, 27.28 for Harrod).

Anderson heads to 10-day DL, replacement coming

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – The Cubs don’t have to do anything right away about an open spot in their starting rotation, but it looks like they will go one of two ways.

They placed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson on the 10-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained lower back. Anderson injured himself during the first inning of Saturday night’s 11-6 loss to the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field.

Manager Joe Maddon indicated the Cubs would either move lefty Mike Montgomery out of the bullpen to take Anderson’s spot, or they would recall right-hander Eddie Butler from Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs have an off-day Thursday between series at Colorado and St. Louis. They have another off-day next Monday.

“We can do a lot of different things,” Maddon said. “Just watching these guys pitch the next three days, does anybody need an extra day? Do you want to pop in

a sixth guy in there? There are so many different ways to look at it because of the Thursday, Monday (off-days) coming up. So we haven’t committed to anything yet except that it would be one of those two guys.”

The Iowa shuttle: To replace Anderson on the roster, the Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Justin Grimm from Iowa. He had been sent to Iowa on Friday.

The Cubs also recalled infielder Tommy La Stella from Iowa and optioned left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny to Iowa. Zastryzny worked four innings Saturday night upon being called up.

La Stella opened the season on the bigleague roster.

“I’m feeling OK,” he said Sunday.

“It’s a little bit of a different approach being down there and getting four or five ABs every night. You take a little bit of a different approach. When you get your one (at-bat) in the seventh and you get your pitch, you don’t want to miss it.

“I just wanted to make sure I was getting back into the flow of the game a

Missing Matt: The Cubs are hoping

outfielder Matt Szczur can land on another major-league roster after he was designated for assignment Saturday.

Maddon called the move “excruciating,” adding that Szczur “is everything you want in a teammate.”

Szczur was a fifth-round draft pick of the Cubs in 2010, and he made his major-league debut in 2014.

“He’s been prepared for this for a while,” said first baseman Anthony Rizzo. “It’s the best thing for him personally. He loved being a Cub. He’s the embodiment of what being a Cub is all about. He wasn’t selfish at all, knew his role, came in every day with a positive attitude.”

Added La Stella: “Not just me, we’re all going to miss him. He’s a great guy, an awesome teammate. He’s going to get a shot wherever. I’m sure he’ll make the most of hit. So I’m happy for him there. He and I spoke yesterday after it happened. It’s bittersweet because hopefully he’s going to get an opportunity to take on a little bit more of an expanded role somewhere else. We’re definitely going to miss him around here.”

Renteria ejected as White Sox get swept by Orioles

BALTIMORE – The refreshing April air in the White Sox’s balloon is leaking out this May. Sunday’s 4-0 loss, the conclusive blow of a three-game sweep by the Orioles, marked the Sox’s sixth loss in the past eight games.

More dispiriting was that it came as ace Jose Quintana, excellent in his previous two starts after a lackluster start, retreated again with a messy four-run performance over 96 pitches and five innings. Quintana (2-5, 4.46 ERA), considered the hottest trade commodity during spring training, got outpitched

by Chris Tillman to ensure a sour finish to a 4-6 road trip that began with two wins against the Tigers and a four-game split with the Royals.

A blown opportunity to put Tillman on the ropes early, three Quintana walks in the first two innings, bloop Orioles singles within inches of each foul line and a couple of debated ballstrike calls was more than Sox manager Ricky Renteria could stomach in one afternoon. Renteria, for something he shouted from the dugout after a striketwo call to Avisail Garcia in the third inning, got ejected for the first time (not

“He ejected me, and that’s all I can say,” Renteria said.

“They were able to minimize damage with their pitching, and we need to play cleaner baseball. I think we have for the most part all season.”

But not Sunday, and the first inning set the tone. Tillman, making his season debut after missing spring training

with right shoulder bursitis, walked Melky Cabrera and Leury Garcia on nine pitches to start the game. But Jose Abreu, one of the game’s hottest hitters of late, helped Tillman by swinging at what looked like ball four running in on his hands and popped out. After Avisail Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice with Leury Garcia beating third baseman Manny Machado’s attempted force throw to second, Todd Frazier lined out

to shortstop and Cody Asche grounded softly to first, letting Tillman off the hook.

Quintana walked two of the first three batters, and a bobble by shortstop Tyler Saladino allowed Mark Trumbo to safely load the bases. The O’s capitalized, scoring runs on a sacrifice fly by Chris Davis and single by Trey Mancini to make it 2-0 after one.

“It was a battle the whole game – the first three innings especially,” Quintana said. “It was a tough day for me all day.”

And a tough series for the Sox. The Orioles, improving to 20-10 for the first time since 2005, completed their first three-game home sweep of the Sox in 18 years.

The Sox had a two-hit day from Frazier and three hits from Yolmer Sanchez, and they had eight hits altogether but were unable to glean anything from whatever opportunities those hits presented.

“It was the first bad series we’ve had,” Quintana said. “You turn the page and do what we were doing before. Everybody knows that. Be ready for the next series.”

That will begin Tuesday at home against the Twins.

James scores 35 as Cavaliers finish sweep of Raptors The ASSOCIATED PRESS TORONTO – LeBron James scored 35 points, Kyrie Irving added 27 and the Cleveland Cavaliers completed a four-game sweep of Toronto, beating the Raptors, 109-102, on Sunday to give James his seventh consecutive trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Kyle Korver scored 18 points to help the Cavaliers become the first team to win eight straight playoff games the year following a title, and the first team to win eight straight in consecutive postseasons.

Channing Frye had 10 points, and Cleveland finished 16 for 41 from 3-point range.

The Cavaliers will face the winner of the Boston-Washington series.

James added nine rebounds and six assists. Irving had nine assists.

Serge Ibaka scored 23 points, and DeMar DeRozan had 22 for Toronto.

Wizards 121, Celtics 102: At Washington, Bradley Beal scored 29 points and the Washington Wizards used a 26-0 third-quarter run to beat the Boston Celtics and tie the series at two games apiece.

John Wall added 27 points and 12 assists for Washington. Wall had seven points, three assists and two steals during the third-quarter spree that featured eight Celtics turnovers. Otto Porter scored four of his 18 points in

the dominant six-minute span that also included five points from Markieff Morris.

Trailing, 53-48, before the run, Washington led, 74-53, on Porter’s layup with five minutes left in the third. The Wizards led by as many as 26 and outscored the Celtics, 237-191, in the two games in D.C. Isaiah Thomas had 19 points for Boston, but scored 17 in the first 15 minutes.

Game 5 is Wednesday night in Boston.

Rockets 125, Spurs 104: At Houston, James Harden scored 28 points, Eric Gordon added 22 and Houston rebounded from consecutive losses to beat San Antonio and tie the series at 2-all.

The Rockets never trailed and used hot 3-point shooting to pull away in the third quarter.

Game 5 is Tuesday night in San Antonio.

Houston made 22 3-pointers in a blowout win in Game 1, but had struggled from long-range in its two losses. The Rockets’ 3-point shooting, a hallmark of their success in the regular season, got back on track Sunday when they made 19 of 43, led by six from Gordon.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ryan Johansen scored the game-winning goal 3:15 into the third period, and the Nashville Predators advanced to their first Western Conference final in franchise history Sunday by beating the St. Louis Blues, 3-1, to take the series in six games.

The Predators won their ninth straight playoff game in Nashville going back to last postseason.

Goalie Pekka Rinne made 23 saves and had an assist. Roman Josi had a goal and an assist, and Calle Jarnkrok added an empty-netter with 60 seconds left.

Nashville will play either Anaheim or Edmonton.

Paul Stastny scored for St. Louis, which fell short of a second straight conference final.

Oilers 7, Ducks 1: At Edmonton, Alberta Leon Draisaitl had three goals and two assists, Mark Letestu added two goals and two assists, and Edmonton cruised past Anaheim to force a decisive Game 7 in their Western Conference semifinal series.

Zach Kassian and Anton Slepychev also scored and Cam Talbot stopped 34 shots for the Oilers, who led, 5-0, after the first period.

Faith Reynolds pitched a shutout as the Sycamore softball team beat Woodstock North, 3-0, on Saturday.

Reynolds (5-2-1) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six. She was 2 for 4 at the plate and drove in a run. Haley Trela was 2 for 4 and Mya Lee added two hits for the Spartans (8-17-1).

DeKalb splits with Dundee-Crown: After a 12-2 loss, the Barbs bounced back with a 16-12 win.

Mallory Warner drove in seven runs and started the second game, with Rylee Levine got the victory in relief.

The Barbs improved to 10-14 on the year.

Knights split at Marengo tourney: The Knights lost, 5-3, to their hosts, but rebounded with a 14-6 win against Andrew.

Fresh horses await Derby winner Always Dreaming in Preakness

The Associated Press LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Always Dreaming is headed to the Preakness in two weeks, when the Kentucky Derby winner is likely to face several fresh horses that skipped the first leg of the Triple Crown.

A majority of the 20-horse field that ran on a sloppy Churchill Downs track in Saturday’s Derby won’t go on to Baltimore.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday that Always Dreaming will head to Baltimore on Tuesday so the 3-year-old colt has plenty of time to adjust to his new surroundings ahead of the 13/16-mile race to be run May 20.

“At Pimlico, there’s generally not a lot of horses training there,” he said. “It will be a quiet environment, give us time to get him settled in and if we have to make any adjustments, we’ll have time to do that.”

Always Dreaming will take up residence in stall No. 40, which traditionally houses the Derby winner in the Pimlico stakes barn.

The dark bay colt was difficult to train in the days leading to the Derby, forcing Pletcher to adjust his equipment. Eventually, Always Dreaming settled down and won by 2¾ lengths, equaling the longest streak of favorites to win since five in a row did so in the 1890s.

“He’s really got some spring in his step this morning,” Pletcher said.

The 49-year-old trainer and jockey John Velazquez won their second Derbies. Pletcher still was sorting through hundreds of congratulatory text messages, including ones from Hall of Fame basketball coach Lute Olson and Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.

No horse asserted his dominance in the winter prep races leading up to the 143rd Derby. As the winner, Always Dreaming certainly commands respect.

However, the colt isn’t scaring away the competition in the Preakness.

The field for the second leg of the Triple Crown is capped at 14 – six fewer than the Derby.

“There’s not that much separation from this bunch of 3-year-olds right now, from what I can see,

other than maybe the winner yesterday,” said trainer Ken McPeek, who is pointing Lexington Stakes winner Senior Investment toward the Preakness.

Among Always Dreaming’s Derby rivals, second-place finisher Lookin At Lee and 13th-place Girvin are possible for the Preakness. If an issue with fourth-place Classic Empire’s right eye clears up, he could join them.

Classic Empire got banged into by McCraken in the start of a chain-reaction collision and his eye was nearly closed shut Sunday.

“I’d like another crack at everybody because he had a trip from hell,” trainer Mark Casse said. “He looks a bit like Muhammad Ali after a rough night.”

Southern California-based Royal Mo, who didn’t get into the Derby, will run in the Preakness.

Gunnevera, who was seventh in the Derby, is another possibility.

Other possible new shooters include Illinois Derby winner Multiplier, Cloud Computing, Conquest Mo Money and Lancaster Bomber from the barn of Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien.

28 To be effective, use meloxicam on limited basis Dear Doctor: I’ve suffered joint pain for years. Being prescribed 15 milligrams of meloxicam has been wonderful. What are your thoughts on meloxicam use?

Dear Reader: Meloxicam (Mobic) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that, like all such drugs, inhibits the formation of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of molecules that boost inflammation and help the blood clot.

There are two forms of the COX enzyme, aptly named COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is involved in protecting the lining of the stomach, promoting the blood’s clotting ability and aiding kidney function. COX-2 is involved in the inflammatory response in the body. Many of the side effects seen with older NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac, are related to the inhibition of COX-1. The side effects include gastritis or gastric ulcers, blood thinning and kidney damage. Inhibiting COX-2 leads to a decrease in inflammation and a decrease in pain.

Meloxicam at low doses (7.5 milligrams) inhibits COX-2 and not COX-1. That means it can reduce pain and inflammation without irritation of the stomach lining or an increased risk of stomach ulcers. Research has found serious upper gastrointestinal events at the 7.5 mg dose occur in fewer than 1 in 3,000 people. But note that follow-up studies didn’t last more than 60 days, so it’s unclear if these rates would hold up over the long term.

Further, at low doses, meloxicam may not trigger the kidney problems other NSAIDs cause. The rates of heart attacks appear comparable to those of other NSAIDs, with a slight increase in risk at all doses.

However, when meloxicam dosage is increased to 15 mg, the medication does inhibit COX-1, leading to a significant increase in the rates of serious upper gastrointestinal events.

One study found, while the number of events was less than with the NSAID

ASK THE DOCTOR Robert Ashley naproxen, the number of events at 15 mg was six times higher than the lower dose of meloxicam (1 in 500 people). Another study showed a greater proportion of people taking 22.5 mg of the drug for 12 weeks had a slight decrease in kidney function. This was not seen at the 15 mg dosage.

Lastly, for people on two types of blood pressure drugs – ACE-inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers – meloxicam (like other NSAIDs) may make those medications less effective.

In summary, meloxicam works well for pain and swelling. The higher doses do decrease pain more than the 7.5 mg dosage, and the medication is comparable to the NSAID diclofenac for both pain relief and decreasing inflammation. I have frequently recommended the medication for joint inflammation, bone bruises and pain from fractures and tendonitis, and it’s worked well for the majority of my patients. For older adults, I lean toward the 7.5 mg dose, but I have recommended 15 mg in more severe cases. Some of the latter group have complained of gastrointestinal discomfort, but this stopped when they discontinued the medication. I rarely give this medication for greater than one month, but have had some patients with severe arthritis who have been on this medication for years.

I don’t know how frequently you are using meloxicam, but if you’re using it on an as-needed basis, it should be safe. If you’re using this medication daily, you should consider its potential for side effects.

The other day, I received my first criticism. A reader chewed me out for challenging their program. It’s hard being a young writer. Facing criticism for doing my job makes it harder. ... After being chewed out, I couldn’t get past it. I suffer from severe anxiety, so everything gets to me. I sit here every day thinking about how I’m not going to let this irritate me anymore, but it still does. How can I let this go? – Stressed Reporter Dear Stressed: Criticism goes with the territory. If you think readers are going to fill your inbox with nothing but praise every day, you are in the wrong business. The way to get beyond this would be to ask yourself whether the criticism was valid. If it was, then learn from it.

If it wasn’t, realize by dwelling on negativity, you hurt only yourself. You should discuss your extreme anxiety with a licensed mental health professional. If you cannot break this self-defeating pattern, consider switching to another kind of writing, because constantly second-guessing yourself will only hold you back in your career.

Dear Abby: I was about to break off the relationship with my girlfriend two years ago, right before she was diagnosed with cancer. Because of the diagnosis, I decided to stay while she was fighting. After two years of chemo, radiation and many, many surgeries, she’s still fighting hard and may beat it. But I’m ready to move on with my life.
