A longtime newspaper friend of mine recently came back to his roots in DeKalb to receive a lifetime achievement award in journalism.

Fred Dickey and I were young Huskies just out of college in the 1960s when we both owned weekly newspapers, mine in Genoa and his in Seneca-Marseilles. We got to reconnect and reminisce about our “early days” when he returned to Northern Illinois University, where he was honored at an April 21 banquet as the Donald R. Grubb Distinguished Alum of the Year.

After leaving NIU, he took much the same path as I did, migrating to California for a newspaper job, including becoming the top editor of the Oakland Tribune, and Sunday editor of the San Jose Mercury-News, two major dailies in the state. He now lives in coastal Cardiff by the Sea, a suburb of San Diego. I know he had a distinguished career, having been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times in his life.

A 1957 DeKalb High School graduate, he is past president of the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.

In his acceptance speech, he urged that Reavis Hall, where NIU’s communications department is housed, should be renamed for Dr. Donald Grubb, the founder of the journalism program at NIU. He recalled that Grubb was determined to make the journalism department one of the best in the nation – which he did.

Since retiring, Dickey has been freelancing for Los Angeles Times Magazine, as well as writing a weekly people column for the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“For the LA Times, I primarily write about issues,” he said. “For the Union-Tribune, my subjects have been interesting and unsung people, from those who have faced hardship to those who caused it – the human parade.”

“I write about the overlooked people who do remarkable, even heroic things: disabled people who find productive jobs within their capability; children who survive nightmare family situations and make the honor roll; mothers who gather up children and flee abusive husbands,” he said. “I find a homeless person more interesting than a typical millionaire.”

“I still follow developments at NIU, and I’m greatly bothered by the way the president’s office is being handled,” he said. “Frankly, when the incumbent’s contract ends, I’d like to see Dennis Barsema named to the job. He’s a tremendously successful businessman, a straight shooter and a loyal alumnus who has demonstrated his love for NIU with his deep pocketbook.”

Dickey points out that other universities have turned to successful business executives for leadership, especially when mired in financial or marketing problems. He said the results have been largely successful. He once met Barsema at a San Diego football game alumni event and was impressed with the conversation they had.

Every time Dickey returns to his hometown, he said, “I always go back to California a little wistfully – especially if it’s not February.”

More than 70 nonprofits to benefit from annual 24-hour donation drive

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Donors from across the globe can support more than 70 local organizations during the fourth annual Give DeKalb County fundraiser, which will last all day Thursday.

Online donations opened at midnight, and donors can view profiles of all organizations involved with the event at www.givedekalbcounty.org.

Michelle Donahoe, executive director of the Sycamore History Museum, said the museum got $9,000 last year, more than doubling previous years’ hauls.

“This [fundraiser] helps us to do our mission, which is enriching the public knowledge of Sycamore for all ages,” Donahoe said. “The hours we put in toward the fundraiser are minimal, but the outcome is fantastic.”

Donahue added that because of social media outreach, the museum gets a lot of first-time donors, some of whom are Sycamore natives living out of state.

In addition to the amount they collect Thursday, participating organizations also will be eligible for a share of a bonus pool of more than $52,000 depending on how much money they raise.

Kishwaukee United Way received about $17,000 last year, including the bonus pool funds, but only took in between $3,000 and $4,000 the year before, the chapter’s executive director, Dawn Littlefield, said.

“The funds have been able to grow over the years, and it’s a great way to leverage a gift to each individual agency,” Littlefield said.

Although the 24-hour event brought in more than $428,000 last year, technical difficulties required the website to operate under a new platform this year.

Due to these problems, the DeKalb County Community Foundation accepted mail-in payments and received a $50,000 contribution by the Doug and Lynn Roberts Family Foundation, which helped boost the numbers for participating organizations.

DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership manager Ben Bingle said a committee of local nonprofit representatives was assembled last year to review potential options for online donations.

“I’m very pleased with the underlying technologies of the new site,” Bingle said. “We have contingency plans that we can put into effect, in the event some issue does arise, but I’m very confident we took the steps necessary to prepare for any issues.”

Bingle added that last year, 338 online donations were made by first-time contributors.

“I think that the word is out about Give DeKalb County, and donors are becoming more aware of this,” Bingle said. “One of the great things of Give DeKalb County is it has the option of introducing people to philanthropy.”

A total of 77 nonprofits and six endowment funds are involved in the fundraiser.

Credit or debit card donations can be made at www.givedekalbcounty. org.

Cash or check payments will be accepted at the DeKalb County Community Foundation at 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Donations by check must be made in person, by the person.

Malta restaurant to host fundraiser for DHS teacher

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com MALTA – To continue the communitywide support of DeKalb High School teacher Ata Shakir, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, Remington’s Gastropub in Malta will host fundraisers for Shakir’s medical expenses Saturday and Sunday.

From 8 a.m. to noon Ata both days, 15 percent of Shakir the revenue will be donated to Shakir’s medical bills.

Co-owner Kristen Catencamp said to help offset the donation, a number of high school students will volunteer by cleaning dishes, pouring coffee and performing other tasks.

“My kids have all been in Shakir’s class,” Catencamp said. “I’ve never

met him, but he’s been a staple in my house for years because of conversations at the dinner table. He seems to be a great guy.”

Several fundraising efforts also have been started to help the Shakir family with medical bills, home maintenance and other expenses.

By Tuesday, a GoFundMe page created for Shakir’s medical expenses at the beginning of March met its $7,500 goal through donations by more than 100 people.

Remington’s Gastropub is located at 102 S. Third St. in Malta, and has been there since September. Catencamp said if there’s a strong enough turnout for the fundraiser, the event will go longer than noon.

“We’ve been doing well, but it’s amazing how many people still don’t know about us,” Catencamp said. “If we are packed, then the fundraisers will go a little bit longer.”

Kirkland man jailed after Tuesday drug raid found several substances DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A Kirkland man will stay in DeKalb County Jail until Monday after police said they found more than half a pound of marijuana in his home and believe he was selling it.

James J. Hall, 29, of the 33000 block of Hagan Drive, is charged with possession of mar- James J. ijuana, possession of Hall marijuana with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, court records show.

If convicted of the most serious offense, possession with intent to deliver, he could face two to five years in prison.

A judge set Hall’s bond at $25,000 on Wednesday, but he’s staying in jail

because those charges violate conditions of bond from a violation of order of protection charge from last year, so he’ll have a hearing Monday on a bond increase.

He appeared in court Wednesday with a white bandage wrapped around his head and claimed his injury resulted from the arrest.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s officers said in court records they went to Hall’s home with a search warrant at 4:53 a.m.

Tuesday, where officers from their special operations team found marijuana, digital scales and vacuum-sealing equipment, as well as a baggie with cocaine residue. They also found butane hash oil, a highly concentrated marijuana derivative. All the drugs tested positive in a field test.

Hall told police he buys marijuana locally, about a pound at a time, and sells it, but that he only uses cocaine recreationally, according to court records.

Police: DeKalb man brandished gun in argument

DeKALB – A DeKalb man and convicted felon is in jail after police arrested him on a firearm possession charge Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

DeKalb police got a report at 12:41

p.m. of a domestic dispute in the 800 block of Kimberly Drive, where a victim said Darrin Redmond, 22, brandished a handgun during an argument, according to the release.

As police arrived, Redmond fled on foot before police caught him in the 900 block of Greenbrier Road, the release said.

Redmond had a loaded handgun on

him, police said, adding that an investigation showed he has a prior felony conviction.

Redmond is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification card, and resisting a peace officer. If convicted of the most serious offense, unlawful possession of a firearm, Redmond

could face two to five years in prison.

The Northern Illinois University Police Department assisted in Redmond’s arrest, the release said.

Redmond will have a Darrin bond hearing at 1 p.m. Redmond Thursday.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are seeking three suspects involved in armed robberies Tuesday night in northwest DeKalb.

According to a safety bulletin from Northern Illinois University police, about 9:15 p.m., a man approached two people getting out of their car in the University Heights Apartments parking lot at 1110 Varsity Blvd., brandished a handgun and demanded money.

The suspect fled on foot toward Annie Glidden Road, and the victims said he’s about 5-foot-6 with facial hair and was wearing a dark-colored jacket and dark-colored pants, police said.

About three hours later and l e s s t h a n a m i l e a w a y , a n o t her armed robbery was reported on Russell Road and Moraine

Terrace, police said.

The victim said two men approached him from behind with a handgun and demanded personal property.

They fled in an unknown direction, police said.

The victim said the men were both between 6 feet tall and 6-foot4, one wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt with red and black shorts, and the other man was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, police said.

No injuries occurred in either incident.

SYCAMORE – Employees from two Sycamore businesses were cited for selling alcohol to a minor Tuesday after failing a compliance check by Sycamore police.

Cub & Spank’s bar, 113 N. Maple St., and the Riverside Food Mart at Marathon Gas, 503 N. Main St., sold alcohol to a minor during the compliance check, according to a Sycamore Police Department news release. Thirteen other businesses passed the compliance check Tuesday, according to the release.

Sycamore Police Cmdr. Michael Anderson said a notice of violations from the compliance check are sent to the mayor, who serves as liquor commissioner.

He said the mayor will determine at a hearing what fines or penalties are given to the employees and business owners.

There is no preset fine.

Anderson said police do alcohol and tobacco compliance checks a few times a year. During the most recent tobacco compliance check, nine Sycamore businesses failed, and 12 were in compliance.

Anderson said they were not expecting to have a lot of violations Tuesday, but the periodic checks are part of enforcement.

“We would like [violations] to be zero,” he said.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A monthlong collection of shoes for developing countries was slower than expected for a DeKalb High School environmental group.

No biggie. The students are tying a double-knot and forging on.

The Eco-Buds group set out to collect more than 2,500 pairs of sneakers from March 20 to April 20, and plans to keep the drive going through May. Rachel Happ, treasurer at the high school, said the goal is to collect 167 bags carrying 15 pairs of sneakers, which amounts to 2,505 shoes.

As of Wednesday, the group had filled 32 bags.

“We still have a lot more to go, but I’ll be happy if we can get halfway there, because it’s a big job and I don’t think we realized how big it would be,” Happ said.

Happ added that collecting that many pairs of shoes could fill a 10-foot by 10foot space in a landfill.

Students with Eco-Buds meet every Wednesday to tie and bag shoes.

Nhi Vo, a DHS junior, said the low collections should not discourage the continuation of the event.

“I feel we can learn from this and reach out to students earlier,” Vo said.

Happ said a company in Orlando, Florida, the group is coordinating with pays $10 a bag of sneakers that will be given to developing countries.

“What that does is it provides jobs by cleaning up shoes, maybe color or dye them, and then distribute to those in need,” Happ said.

The money collected from the shoes will go toward medical expenses of Ata Shakir, a DeKalb High School teacher who was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, the Hope Haven homeless shelter, Safe Passage domestic violence services and the Eco-Buds program.

As fashions change in clothing, so do fashions in furniture and design.

Norman Rockwell was considered a commercial artist of little value for many years, but now his original paintings for magazine covers can sell for millions of dollars. A strange table made by John Scott Bradstreet (1845-1914) recently was offered at a Cowan auction in Cincinnati. Bradstreet was a leading interior designer, decorator and tastemaker in Minneapolis for many years before he died in a car crash in 1914.

The table was in the Arts and Crafts style - sort of. Bradstreet went to Japan many times, and his designs were influenced by Asian arts and bits of many other styles English Arts and Crafts, Moorish, Gothic, the Aesthetic Movement and the works of Whistler. The wooden center table sold in the auction was covered with shallow carvings that followed the grain. The technique, called by the Japanese name jin-di-sugi, used cypress, a soft wood that, after a long time in water or mud, develops raised lines in the grain. The wood was then scorched, brushed, carved and waxed, a process that was modernized and patented by Bradstreet. Few pieces like this are known, and many of these are in museums. The auctioned table had side panels that flipped down to make small display shelves on each side. We looked for more information about this table and the maker, and found that it had sold in 2005 for an estimated price of $50,000 to $75,000. This time, the table brought $24,000. *** Q: I have three Royal Doulton blue-andwhite vases depicting scenes of children playing blind man’s bluff in the woods. They are dressed in 19th-century clothing. What can you tell me about them?

A: These are part of Royal Doulton’s “Blue Children” series, which was made from 1890 to 1930. The series often is called “Babes in the Woods” by collectors. The series included 24 blue-and-white scenes, most picturing

young girls. The designs were hand painted on earthenware. Vases, plates, plaques, biscuit jars, jugs and other pieces were made, most before 1915. Some pieces made before 1902 were signed by the artist. Fakes also have been made. A 9 3/4-inch vase, signed with the artist’s initials, recently sold at auction for $224. An 18 1/4-inch vase sold for $1,180. You should have an expert look at your vases to get an idea of their value. *** Q: I’d like information about a teddy bear I have. It has long mohair, felt pads on its feet, glass eyes, straw stuffing and a growler. The arms, legs and head move. It’s in good condition. There is a label that reads “Made in Federal Republik of Germany.”

A:Your teddy bear was made between May 1949 and October 1990, when the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was in existence. Bears made before World War II are more desirable than newer bears. Without a maker’s name, it’s not possible to give a value for your bear. *** Q: My mother gave me the metal dentist chair from my father’s office. It is not like today’s dentist chairs; it’s more like a lightweight skeleton chair with a round enameled metal seat, rectangular slotted metal back and spindles for the headrest, legs and mechanical parts. There are no arms. It looks very uncomfortable and smaller than a regular dental chair. Is it worth anything? How was it used? How old is it?

A: The 17th-century dentist held the patient on the floor to pull a tooth. By the early 18th century, a Windsor chair with a piece of wood added as a head rest was used. Then inventors made improvements to metal, mechanical and upholstered chairs. Your chair was made in about 1910. Bacteria and diseases were a worry during that time. The enameled metal furniture was very popular in the 1930s. Large padded chairs used today and as early as the 1850s are sometimes bought for a family room or home bar as a conversation piece. They are hard to sell.

CHICAGO – Former President Barack Obama unveiled plans for his future presidential center Wednesday, painting a picture of a buzzing hub for youth and community programs on the South Side of Chicago where he raised his family and launched his political career.

Obama fielded questions from residents at a forum near the site, delving into nitty gritty details of traffic patterns, green space and job creation, while avoiding any mention of his successor in the White House.

“What we want this to be is the world premiere institution for training young people and leadership to make a difference in their communities, in their countries and in the world,” he told the friendly crowd that included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, his onetime chief of staff.

It was Obama’s second public appearance since he left office, providing another glimpse of post-presidential life. Last week, he participated in a University of Chicago panel with students, saying young people are the key to solving the nation’s most pressing problems

CHICAGO – A manhunt was underway Wednesday after two plainclothes Chicago police officers were shot and wounded as they sat in an unmarked vehicle in what authorities are describing as a targeted attack.

Two vehicles pulled up alongside the officers and opened fire Tuesday evening in the high-crime Back of the Yards neighborhood on the city’s South Side. One officer was shot in the arm and hip and the other in the back, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

The officers were conducting a follow-up investigation to a previous incident, but Guglielmi said they were wearing civilian clothes with vests bearing police badges. Johnson said their vehicle was unmarked.

Private fundraising to fix fairgrounds set to begin

CHICAGO – A private foundation backed by Gov. Bruce Rauner is preparing to kick off a major fundraising effort to revamp Illinois’ dilapidated fairgrounds.

Rauner announced the creation of the Illinois Fairgrounds Foundation during last year’s state fair, with the goal of raising enough money to repair crumbling buildings, deteriorating roadways, and aging sewer and electrical systems, the Chicago Tribune reported. The fairgrounds also have battled flooding during heavy rains.

The foundation will seek $185 million in private money and donations to pay for

the projects. Chairman John Slayton said the group has raised $5,000 to $10,000 so far.

He said the goal isn’t likely to be raised in the short term, but that the foundation wants to hit $2 million or $3 million a year. The governor and first lady Diana Rauner have promised to contribute an unspecified amount to the project.

2 charged in Islamic State case plead not guilty

CHICAGO – Two Zion men accused of seeking to provide material support to terrorists and who posed for photos holding an Islamic State group flag have pleaded not guilty to federal terrorism charges.

Joseph D. Jones and Edward Schimenti calmly told Judge Andrea Wood on Wednesday that they understood the gravity of the allegations. The 35-yearolds face 20-year maximum prison terms if convicted.

A prosecutor at their arraignment in Chicago called it a complex case involving classified evidence that will remain sealed. The next hearing is July 6.

A complaint unsealed after their April arrests in an FBI sting said they agreed to provide cellphones that could be used as car-bomb detonators in Syria. It includes photos of them holding a black IS flag at Illinois Beach State Park.

Transit station hindering sale of Thompson Center

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel appears to be throwing a monkey wrench into plans by the state to sell the James R. Thompson Center.

Emanuel on Tuesday expressed concerns about what will happen to the Chicago Transit Authority station on the property.

Michael Hoffman of Illinois’ Central Management Services Agency said his office is trying to work out the fate and cost of the station, which is inside the Thompson Center.

Emanuel said he will not saddle city residents with the cost of repairs or reconstruction of the station, which is a transfer point for six CTA lines. He contends it will cost $80 million to $120 million to rebuild the station.

And there’s no guarantee that the bill, if passed by the House on Thursday, will actually become law. First the Senate must work its will, and the House legislation has generated significant opposition in the upper chamber.

Nonetheless, victory in the House would provide some vindication of the GOP’s ability to govern in Republican-controlled Washington, and provide a long-sought win for Trump, who has been in office more than 100 days without a significant congressional victory save Senate confirmation of a Supreme Court justice.

The latest iteration of the GOP bill would let states escape a requirement under Obama’s law that insurers charge healthy and seriously ill customers the same rates. The American Medical Association, AARP and other consumer and medical groups are opposed. The AMA issued a statement saying Upton’s changes “tinker at the edges without remedying the fundamental failing of the bill – that millions of Americans will lose their health insurance as a direct result.”

If the GOP bill became law, congressional analysts estimate that 24 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2026, including 14 million by next year. Even if the GOP secures a win in the House, the Senate is expected to change the bill.

WASHINGTON – FBI Director James Comey told Congress on Wednesday that revealing the reopening of the Hillary Clinton email probe just before Election Day came down to a painful, complicated choice between “really bad” and “catastrophic” options. He said he’d felt “slightly nauseous” to think he might have tipped the election outcome but in hindsight would change nothing.

“I would make the same decision,” Comey declared during a lengthy hearing in which Democratic senators grilled him on the seeming inconsistency between the Clinton disclosure 11 days before the election and his silence about the bureau’s investigation into possible contacts between Russia and Trump’s campaign.

Comey, offering an impassioned public defense of how he handled the election-year issues, insisted that the FBI’s actions in both investigations were consistent. He told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the FBI cannot take into account how it might benefit or harm politicians.

“I can’t consider for a second whose political futures will be affected and in what way,” Comey told the senators.

“We have to ask ourselves what is the right thing to do and then do that thing.”

Persistent questions from senators, and Comey’s testimony, made clear that the FBI director’s decisions of last summer and fall involving both the Trump and Clinton campaigns continue to roil national politics and produce lingering second-guessing about whether the investigations were handled evenly.

On Tuesday, Clinton partly attributed her loss to Comey’s disclosure to Congress less than two weeks before Election Day that the email in-

ery from lawmakers, especially when he had testified under oath that the investigation had been concluded and had promised to advise lawmakers if it needed to be reopened.

Plus, he said, his agents weren’t optimistic that they could finish reviewing the thousands of emails on the laptop before the election, and could not rule out that they would find evidence of “bad intent.”

“Concealing in my view would be catastrophic, not just to the FBI, but well beyond,” Comey said, in explaining his options. “And honestly, as between really bad and catastrophic, I said to my team we got to walk into the world of really bad. I’ve got to tell Congress that we’re restarting this, not in some frivolous way, in a hugely significant way.”

The FBI obtained a warrant to search the laptop and sifted through thousands of emails, Comey said, including ones with classified information that had been forwarded to the laptop by Abedin to be printed out.

Although officials found many new emails, officials again found insufficient evidence that anyone had intended to break the law, Comey said.

Trump on Mideast peace: ‘We will get it done’

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Despite bleak prospects for success, President Donald Trump promised on Wednesday “to do whatever is necessary” to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

At a White House meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Trump pledged to reinvigorate the stalled Mideast peace process that has bedeviled his predecessors and said he would serve as “a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator” between the two sides. “We will get it done,” Trump confidently told Abbas.

“I’m committed to working with Israel and the Palestinians to reach an agreement,” Trump said. “But any agreement cannot be imposed by the United States or by any other nation.

The Palestinians and Israelis must work together to reach an agreement that allows both peoples to live, worship, and thrive and prosper in peace.”

The source of Trump’s optimism was not immediately apparent. He offered no details about his effort or how it would be any different from attempts over the past two decades during which former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all tried

Asked what distinguishes Trump’s plans from previous attempts, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said merely: “The man is different.”

The peace process has been stalled

since 2014, and there have been no serious attempts to restart negotiations.

Like previous U.S. leaders, Trump faces numerous obstacles in the longshot bid. They include the contours of a potential Palestinian state, Jerusalem’s status and the question of Palestinian refugees. Complicating it all are the vehement Palestinian criticisms of

Israeli settlement construction and Israeli complaints that Palestinians are inciting violence.

Abbas insisted he is committed to peace, but he made clear Palestinian demands for a separate state based on borders that existed before the 1967 Mideast war, a capital in east Jerusalem and the return of Palestinian refugees.

“Our strategic option, our strategic choice is to bring about peace based on the vision of two states, a Palestinian state, with its capital of east Jerusalem, that lives in peace and stability with the state of Israel based on the borders of 1967,” he said.

Israel rejects the 1967 lines as a possible border, saying it would impose grave security risks. Israel also opposes Palestinian demands on refugees and stakes its claim on an undivided Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state.

Trump did not discuss any of those issues Wednesday. But in a February news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump broke with longtime U.S. policy by raising the idea of a one-state peace agreement, withholding clear support for an independent Palestine. U.S. officials quickly stressed afterward that Trump would support any arrangement agreed by the two sides.

It’s up to us to keep the American Dream alive At one time, we all pretty much counted on what we call the American Dream.

You work hard, you get ahead and your children have a shot at doing even better than you did.

That was the way things worked for generations. Especially with immigrant families, where it was not uncommon to see the children of janitors and sweatshop workers become doctors, lawyers and business owners. But the dream wasn’t just about college and professional status. There were plenty of opportunities in the blue-collar sector as well. Factory workers could count on a job for life and see their children work alongside them, maybe even rise into management. But things have changed.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released a report examining the economic lives of so-called “millennials,” who range in age from 18 to 34.

A third are living with their parents.

More than 40 percent have student debt.

Fewer than one-third are financially independent of their parents by age 21. Many college graduates cannot find a job in their field. Many high school grads cannot find a job outside the low-wage service sector.

The millennials still believe education is key to success and they want financial stability. For about half of them, the dream is working. For the other half, it’s still just a dream.

So what can be done?

The most important thing is creating not just jobs – we have plenty of minimum-wage positions out there – but higher-paying jobs.

Professional and manufacturing jobs.

The kind that help you move up, move out and build a life.

Opportunity.

That was one of the cornerstones of President Donald’s Trump’s campaign. It’s a promise we hope he keeps. It’s a promise we hope lawmakers, by putting aside their partisan bickering, can embrace and help him keep.

Finally, a good tax proposal from Trump There is an upside to President Donald Trump’s unorthodox style of communication: Sometimes he comes out with a good idea that a less mercurial national figure might avoid out of conventional political caution.

So it was with his remark during an interview with Bloomberg News, to the effect that he “would certainly consider” increasing the federal excise tax on motor fuels to help pay for an increase in federal infrastructure spending.

Trump’s one condition should present no obstacle: He said he could support a hike only if the money went to pay for highways, but the law already requires that it go into a trust fund dedicated to the purpose. Beyond that, his statement was just right.

The two main revenue sources of that trust fund – an 18.4 cents-per-gallon federal gasoline tax and a 24.4 cents-per-gallon tax on diesel – have not been raised since 1993. That is to say, they have been cut, when you take inflation into account, by 40 percent over the past 24 years.

Consequently, the Highway Trust Fund (which also subsidizes mass transit) is chronically underfunded and transportation needs are going unmet.

Frightened of being labeled tax-raisers, presidents and members of Congress from both parties have shied away from increasing the levy or even letting it keep pace with inflation. Politicians chose instead to adopt a bill in December 2015 that purported to replenish the trust fund through such unsustainable budgetary gimmicks as a raid on the Federal Reserve’s cash flow.

in the trucking industry, which both benefits from a well-maintained road system and suffers from an insufficient one, in the form of congestion and vehicle damage.

Accordingly, American Trucking Associations has long favored higher fuel taxes. The user-fee approach to paying for the roads makes sense for ordinary motorists as well: It’s penny-wise and pound-foolish to resist slightly higher prices at the pump, because automobile drivers, too, must pay for pothole-caused damage and time lost to traffic.

Of course no one likes to pay more for fuel; policy should be adjusted to help mitigate the impact of this inevitably regressive levy on those who can least afford it.

Still, at $2.38 per gallon, Tuesday’s nationwide average price of regular gasoline was less than what Americans paid 70 years ago, adjusted for inflation. The tax increase needed to cover currently planned Highway Trust Fund spending would be small – roughly a dime a gallon, according to a 2015 Congressional Budget Office report.

Ideally, Congress and the Trump administration could agree to a significantly larger amount, then index it to inflation permanently to assure the trust fund’s long-term stability.

By the way, a higher gas tax would help reduce fuel consumption and thus would be extremely effective in combating climate change as well.

Admittedly, that’s not exactly one of Trump’s favorite causes. But he wouldn’t have to include it in his talking points.

Whether one prefers or distrusts markets and federalism, on the other hand, has obvious implications for both issues.

Trump may succeed in making the Republican Party more nationalist.

His nationalism seems to have played a role in drawing him the support of many people who had not previously voted for Republican candidates, while repelling some people who had.

But most Republicans didn’t run on Trumpian nationalist themes.

They ran as Reaganites, more or less, and a lot of them won more votes in their districts and states than he did.

That doesn’t mean nationalism can be ignored. It is an important conservative theme, and nationalists are an important part of the conservative coalition.

But there’s a limit to what nationalism can do, and one thing it can’t do is bear all the weight of American politics.

Who knew we needed fidget spinners?

To the Editor: Am I the last person to learn about fidget spinners?

I like to think I am abreast of the times as I read the newspaper (at least the headlines) and catch the highlights of newscasts.

But this latest craze somehow escaped my detection.

I know a new version of the smartphone is just around the corner, although I don’t really understand what a smartphone does.

I am delighted to live in this technology era, even if much of it is beyond my comprehension. How do they come

up with these things? To think that there is a need for so many items is a source of wonder to me.

I’m not quite on a par with the person who saw a Thermos bottle for the first time. When told it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold, he asked, “How does it know?”

Youth takes all this gadgetry in stride. While I am not exactly of the horse-and-buggy era, I have seen so many modern improvements, it never ceases to amaze me what the human mind can dream up.

A writer recently said, (and I quote), ”I must have spent the last month in a cave 500 miles from the nearest child.”

Granted, I am surrounded by elderly people my own age and considered out of the mainstream of life, but they are erudite retired college professors, teachers and people who still lead active lives.

We have kept up on some of the technological inventions such as computers, iPads, cellphones, etc.

We are part of the generation who fought wars, built factories and highways when the horse-and-buggy days ended, and there was a need for better highways and other improvements that are taken for granted now.

We may not fully understand a lot of the devices we use and appreciate.

But fidget spinners? Come on! What

happened to just twiddling our thumbs?

Please bear in mind that this was written by an elderly female curmudgeon who thought they’d never improve on the Edison phonograph.

(Just kidding, of course,) Bring on the new smartphone. I’ll be first in line to buy one if it will screen all telemarketing, surveys and other nuisance calls.

Is anyone working on ridding us of all the bleeping commercials on television and radio besides the mute button? That would be real progress.

American politics has a new organizing principle, according to a theory that has been making the rounds.

Reaganism is dead. Our central debate no longer concerns big vs. small government, or traditionalism vs. progressivism on morals.

Instead it pits nationalism against globalism.

R. R. Reno, the editor of the religious-conservative journal First Things, writes that President Donald Trump recognizes “the new schism in American life,” which “is about immigration, free trade and the broad and deep impacts of globalization on America’s economy and culture.”

Reno is writing from a position of broad sympathy with Trump’s nationalism, but critics of that nationalism have argued similarly.

David Brooks wrote last year that big vs. small government would give way to open vs. closed society.

Trump’s victory in November makes Reno’s argument plausible, as do Brexit and the rise of nationalists in France and Hungary. Perhaps the argument is even true.

SYCAMORE – The stretch of onerun wins continues for the Sycamore baseball team.

After allowing DeKalb to take the lead in the top of the seventh, the Spartans scored two in the bottom half of the frame and earned a 5-4 win on a walk-off single by Jacob Cavanaugh in the second game of the series Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Park.

The Spartans (17-6 overall, 7-4 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) have won seven of their last eight games and have won four of their last five conference meetings by one run. In the first game of the series, the Spartans topped the Barbs, 2-1, on Tuesday.

“I’m not sure [if it’s good or bad],” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said of the string of one-run wins. “To me, we’re winning the close games, for the most part, but I don’t know – it’s been a lack of driving in a run. Finding a guy who can drive in a run, even early in the game.”

The loss is a tough one for the Barbs, who now have lost 13 games in a row. DeKalb (6-17 overall, 0-8 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) went ahead in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Derek Kyler and a goahead RBI single by Eric Nelson off Sycamore left-handed reliever James Marcinkowski to give them a 4-3 lead.

Nelson, who struck out five in two perfect innings on Tuesday, came in relief for the Barbs in the bottom of the seventh and walked Sycamore leadoff hitter Zach Carlsen. After a sacrifice bunt by Logan Riley, the Barbs elected

striking out six on 103 pitches.

DeKalb stranded five runners on base in the first two innings, while Sycamore stranded four.

“I thought we had that game,” DeKalb coach Dedric Wright said. “It never comes down to the last inning.

There are some things we were in control of in the first two innings. We had bases loaded, one out, each inning and first inning we came across with one run, second inning we came across with none.”

By the numbers: For Sycamore, Jacob Cavanaugh went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Mizgalski had an RBI single and Marcinkowski and Riley each added singles. For DeKalb, Noah Valin continued his hot streak by going 2 for 4, Kyler was 2 for 4 and Wheeler, Matthew Searls, Nelson and Jake Neidel all had singles.

Beyond the stats: Searls, who has already stolen home during a game this season, tried to do it again on Tuesday but was tagged out at home by Sycamore catcher Matthew Cusumano to end the top of the third.

They said it: “He probably could have started the seventh inning,” Jason Cavanaugh said about taking Jacob Cavanaugh off the mound to start the top of the seventh. “He had enough pitches to start off the seventh, but I thought about it long and hard and (DeKalb’s) one and four hitters are both left-handed. ... I wanted James to come in with a clean inning. I’ll probably have to answer to that at dinner tonight.”

Up next: The two teams finish up the series at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Sycamore Park.

Nothing diminutive about NIU HOF-elect Wolfe KORCEK’S CORNER Mike Korcek At 5-foot-7, 172 pounds and soaking wet, there was never anything remotely diminutive about Northern Illinois University’s elusive tailback Garrett Wolfe, his numbers or his achievements.

Wolfe’s book of lists – even the abbreviated one that follows – are enormous, national in scope from a program that has produced superlative rushers such as Mark Kellar, Stacey Robinson, LeShon Johnson, Michael Turner and Jordan Lynch.

Three-time All-American (2004-06).

Two years with Heisman Trophy votes (11th in 2006). NCAA FBS rushing and all-purpose yardage kingpin (2006). Top 15 all-time NCAA career ground-gainer (currently No. 14 with 5,164 yards). One of only six runners in major-college history with three-plus 1,500-yard seasons.

Semifinalist for both the prestigious Maxwell and Doak Walker awards as a senior. Third-round NFL draft choice of the Bears (2007).

Now the latest honor: Enshrinement into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame this Oct. 6.

“In 40 years of coaching, Garrett might be the most natural football player I’ve ever seen,” said former NIU coach Joe Novak, a 2013 inductee into the same hall. “Natural, instinctive.

He was a natural runner. Garrett made people miss. He caught the ball naturally. He had a intuitive football sense and was a more than willing pass protector.

And even at 170 pounds, Garrett could put that left shoulder down and drive people.

“It was at Iowa State in 2004,” Novak recalled. “Garrett ran for a touchdown.

It got called back on a penalty. Next down we ran the same exact play and he ran for a 21-yard score. We (coaches) knew then he would be good.”

Good might be typical Novak understatement.

Six days later against Bowling Green and on ESPN2, Wolfe recorded the first of an NIU-record 22 career 100yard rushing games with 202 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-17 revenge victory over the Falcons en route to a 1,656-yard, 18 TD sophomore year.

Thoughts turned back to the recruiting process in 2000 when Novak vividly recalled watching Wolfe’s 40-minute highlight film from his prep days at Holy Cross.

“Amazing,” Novak admitted.

“Garrett was a sensational high school player, tremendous production, accolades.”

It wasn’t his home life.

“Wonderful family. Great parents. One of his brothers was a policeman,” Novak said.

So, what was it?

“Grade issues and size,” Novak said.

The Hollywood-like Wolfe success script could’ve been put on the shelf right there.

Enter the inner, steel-tough Garrett Wolfe.

“I was born with a chip on my shoulder,” Wolfe said. “Growing up, I was always the smallest. I always had the desire to prove everybody wrong.”

Wolfe eventually did on both counts.

Grades? The man turned his only real scholarship offer into three NIU degrees – including a double master’s after his four-year stint with the Bears and a brief time in the Canadian Football League.

Football? How many FBS backs moved up the NCAA hierarchy ladder as Wolfe did – No. 5 in the nation in rushing as a sophomore, No. 2 (1,580 yards) as a junior, and No. 1 (a MAC-record 1,928 yards) as a senior? As it said in the 2006 media guide: Last on the alphabetical roster and No. 1 in everything else.

Some wise-guy skeptics might dismiss Wolfe’s stats in the mid-major realm. Right, tell it to No. 1-ranked Ohio State when the Huskies’ No. 1 ran circles around the Buckeyes for 285

all-purpose yards (171 rushing) on a regional ABC telecast in the 2006 opener.

Or his 148 yards rushing against No. 4 Michigan in the Big House – including the 76-yard cutback run on which Novak swears “... Garrett had eyes in the back of his head” in 2005 on another ABC game.

A week later, Wolfe cemented his spot on the 2006 Playboy All-America team – which might be the best pre-season individual football honor in program history – by shredding Northwestern for 245 ground yards and three TDs in the heartbreaking 38-37 overtime setback in Evanston. One of the NIU-NU spectators was Evanston resident Gary Cole, the sports editor for Chrissie Hefner.

“We got a kick out of proving everyone wrong, that NIU could compete,” Wolfe said about those mega-games and his chip. “We knew the gravity of those (games) and what it meant to our program.”

For three years, Wolfe made every NIU aficionado spring out of their Huskie Stadium seat or off their couches at home, plus even made a believer out of his SID. When I received the letter from Cole that Garrett had made the Playboy All-America unit, Novak graciously allowed me (“Mike, it’s your deal”) to surprise Wolfe in my office.

When I handed him the envelope, Garrett opened it, read the letter, and smiled. It was Christmas morning in April for both of us.

A few weekends later, Garrett and I were at a Phoenix resort for the Playboy All-America shoot.

It was a revelation.

The other All-Americans all knew about Garrett or had seen him play on TV. As they donned their uniforms on the other side of the large studio setup, I recalled Novak’s only team rule request: No pictures or video with Garrett’s fake diamond stud earrings.

To be honest, I forgot to tell Garrett.

Now, I’m thinking “how am I going walk over there and ask him in front of his peers?” All the sudden, another SID came over and asked me something.

Next thing I knew, Garrett was standing in front of me in uniform with his arm outstretched to me. As he opened his fist, Garrett asked: “Mr. Korcek, would you please hold onto these for me?”

It was the earrings.

When I asked his reaction about the NIU Hall of Fame honor this week, Garrett responded as I knew he would, citing how fortunate and blessed he was for all his teammates and coaches.

I’ve said it before. I had a great job. See what I mean?

Changes for Baez help swing despite persisting big ones

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant noticed Cubs teammate Javy Baez working on a slight adjustment to his hitting mechanics before Tuesday’s game against the Phillies.

“I think he was focusing on trying to limit his leg kick a little bit,” Bryant said, “make it a little smaller. Then I saw that in the game. I was pretty impressed. He went from the cage right to the game. He looked awesome.”

Four hits later – including a single Baez considered trying to stretch into a double that would have meant the cycle – the struggling Baez he said finally felt for the first time this season, “really good.”

Just two days after talking in Boston about continuing to work daily on finding the kind of success he had late

last season and into the postseason, Baez had his first career four-hit game.

“The difference was three of those hits were middle and opposite field,” manager Joe Maddon said. “That’s what I like. I still want to see him accept a couple walks. I still want him to not expand the strike zone. That’s the next level.”

Combined with a home run and single in his final three at-bats Monday, Baez was on a 6-for-7 run – with 14 total bases – entering Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies..

The Cubs aren’t sure what they have in Baez, 24 – the slugging middle infielder drafted ninth overall in 2011.

“I don’t think it’s going to be revealed to us for another couple of years,” Maddon said of his ceiling. “I think it’s very high, absolutely.”

But the Cubs expect the performance swings at the plate – compound-

ed by a tendency for big swings and misses – to persist until Baez becomes more willing, with experience, to compromise on the coil and length of his signature big swing.

“When he really figures it out, the reward’s going to show up,” Maddon said, “and it’s going to be outstanding to watch.”

Over the weekend, Baez said he was looking for that balance but didn’t plan to abandon that swing.

Maybe the reduced leg kick is the compromise.

“It’s really working for me,” he said of his pregame and early-game work and focus. “And I’m seeing the ball really good.”

Before those last seven at-bats, Baez was 12 for 60 this season (.200) with a .333 slugging percentage and .258 onbase percentage.

The batting average jumped 69

points on that surge – and his slugging and on-base percentages to .507 and .315.

Then he swung big in his first atbat Wednesday and pushed a ball off the end of his bat to first for an easy out to end the inning with a runner at second.

When Baez bats low in the order (ninth the last two games), assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske works with him on the swing behind the dugout tunnel in the first inning.

“Making your adjustments here in the big leagues is really tough,” said Baez, who added he’s used to slow starts but not usually this long into a season. “The pitchers know what they’re doing, a, and they’re trying to get you out. And if they do their homework, it’s going to pay off [for them].”

But, he said, “I’m finally seeing the ball real good.”

Every day it seems Cubs manager Joe Maddon has to tick off, one by one, the areas in which he believes his team will reach its levels from last year.

Some days it’s the defense. Some days it’s the offense.

On Wednesday, the subject was starting pitching.

Heading into the evening’s 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, Cubs starting pitchers had an ERA of 4.66. That ranked 12th in the National League and 26th in Major League Baseball.

Last season, Cubs starting pitchers led baseball with a sparkling 2.96 ERA. Cubs starters entered Wednesday’s game with just nine quality starts compared with 17 nonquality starts.

As he has when talking about other facets of the Cubs’ game, Maddon sounded an optimistic tone.

“Actually, to keep our head above water while it’s not happening, I kind of like it because I know it’s going to happen,” he said of the starters regaining their old form. “Our guys are good.

They’re well. They’re going to continue to pitch better.

“For us to be in the position we’re in right now while they’re not at the top of their game, I kind of like it, actually, be-

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Say this for Rick Renteria: He has his players buying his hustle first and ask questions later style.

Since his first day on the job as White Sox manager, Renteria promoted effort, executing and doing the little things, which all managers ask for.

It’s been pretty evident in the Sox’s first 26 games, win lose or lose big as they did against the Royals on Wednesday night, that they’re aiming to please the boss and giving him what he wants.

“Ricky is a special guy,” said veteran Melky Cabrera, 32, who has played for six major league teams. “We all try to do our best for him because we know he is trying to do his best for us.

There is mutual respect, a connection there. There is a mentality and philosophy he brought here to hustle and do your best no matter the score.”

Sox players run hard on routine grounders and infield pop-ups till the play is over. They’ve been alert to backing up bases and throwing to the right base and doing, as they like to say, “the little things.”

“We play hard,” Leury Garcia said.

“It worked in spring training and we’re still doing it. Everybody hustles down the line. When you have ev-

To a man, the Sox have bought in to what Renteria is selling, and they insist it’s a big reason why they’re 14-12.

They entered the game in first place.

In rebuild mode, few expected them to be seen there, even for a day or so. Renteria knows it’s early, and he’s managing with a starting rotation that is carrying a Rule 5 pitcher (Dylan Covey) and a discarded veteran (Pelfrey), but he’s laying groundwork for the future, kind of a “White Sox Way” if you will.

And players are responding. They say their manager genuinely cares about them.

“With Ricky, it’s something unique,” Cabrera said.

“He gives us confidence. Saying to never quit, it doesn’t matter how hard the situation, we can overcome. You

feel motivated.”

“Since the beginning of spring training Ricky was really clear about what he expected from us,” designated hitter Cody Asche, in his first year with the Sox, said. “As men you have to respect that from the manager when he asks you to do the simplest things. He doesn’t ask for a lot – a professional at-bat, running out ground balls and fly balls, back up bases and be where you’re supposed to be. He hammered that message home. You keep doing those things and you’re going to find yourself in position to win a lot more ballgames.”

After Wednesday’s defeat, the Sox were positioned to gain a split of a four-game series split with lefthander Derek Holland starting Thursday afternoon. Holland, new to the team after signing as a free agent in the offseason, has played on winning teams with the Rangers.

He has followed Renteria’s lead since spring training by insisting, rebuild or not, the Sox can win.

“It comes down to everybody buying in,” Holland said. “It takes all nine, not just one guy.

“Rick told us from Day 1, ‘Nobody believes in us because we’re in a rebuilding process.’ Screw that stuff.

Nobody buys into that. Everybody shows up every day to win. That’s how it is.”

Leury last man standing in battle for center field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Charlie Tilson’s injury, the trade of Peter Bourjos and Jacob May’s failure to seize the opportunity handed to him out of spring training has left Leury Garcia standing all alone in center field.

The White Sox’s 26-year-old multipurpose guy acquired from the Rangers for Alex Rios in 2013, Garcia carried a .288 batting average into the game Wednesday against the Royals.

A career .273 minor-league hitter, Garcia’s averages in parts of his last four major-league seasons paled in comparison at . 204, .166, .214 and .229.

In 69 at-bats, the switch-hitting Garcia had two homers, five doubles and five RBIs and a modest eight strikeouts.

“It’s the game time,” Garcia said.

“I’ve had more opportunities and more at-bats and because of that more confidence at the plate. When you see more pitches, when you play every day like I pretty much have the last couple of weeks, it helps.”

Garcia is fast, but at times he seems less confident in the field. He has turned the wrong way a couple of times on fly balls over his head and was tentative a time or two about taking charge with the more experienced Melky Garcia in left and Avisail Garcia in right.

“Yes, absolutely,” manager Rick Renteria said. “We talked about being the center fielder and being the quarterback. Go ahead and take charge.

It’s OK for you to command the ball.

Be more vocal, more confident.”

Renteria said Garcia studies video of his plate appearances, his running and defense “every day.”

“He studies everything about his game,’’ he said.

That’s a good thing because right now the Sox don’t have many options after Garcia. Adam Engel, the other center fielder with May at Charlotte, is batting .167.

At Double-A Birmingham, Hunter Jones has been flashy with the glove but is batting .227. And Tilson won’t be ready anytime soon.

Avisail trying to get it right: Avisail Garcia lost 15 pounds in the offseason, and while he is leaner, he doesn’t necessarily look faster to Renteria in right field.

“He’s a big man and once he gets going, it’s pretty quick,” Renteria said. “He can cover some ground.”

Garcia has worked at shortening his first stride to help himself get going quicker, Renteria said. If he never becomes more than a below aver-

age defender, it won’t be for lack of trying.

“He works very hard at his defensive work,” Renteria said.

“He’s doing a lot of little things that make it look clean.”

This and that: Infielder Yoan Moncada, baseball’s No. 2 minor league prospect according to Baseball America, went 3 for 4 for Triple-A Charlotte Wednesday, raising his average to .330. Moncada, who has five homers and six stolen bases, has been leading off. He is 15 for 38 during a current nine-game hitting streak. ...

The four-game series with the Royals concludes at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, the Sox’s 23rd game of their first 26 against AL Central teams. The 10game road trip concludes with three games this weekend in Baltimore, which begins a stretch of 19 of 25 games outside the division.

Former Northern Illinois pitcher Alex Klonowski was called up to the Salt Lake City Bees, the Triple-A farm team of the Los Angeles Angels.

Klonowski, who was drafted by the Angels in 2014, had a strong showing with the Mobile BayBears (Double A) this season. He’s 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in four games – including two starts – and has 11 strikeouts and five walks in 151/3 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting just .175 off him.

SPORTS BRIEFS Lakers’ Deng has surgery on pectoral muscle

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Los Angeles Lakers forward Luol Deng has undergone surgery to repair his right pectoral muscle.

The Lakers announced Deng’s surgery Wednesday.

The veteran is expected to be recovered well before the start of training camp.

The 32-year-old Deng averaged a career-low 7.2 points a game last season, his first with the Lakers after agreeing to a four-year, $72 million contract last summer. He struggled with his new team, making a career-worst 38.7 percent of his shots and producing a career-low 1.3 assists a game.

Red Sox permanently ban fan for racial slur at another fan

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox have permanently banned a fan from Fenway Park who used a racial slur toward another fan.

The Red Sox took the action Wednesday in the wake of Baltimore star Adam Jones being racially taunted during a game in Boston.

The Red Sox said on Tuesday night it was reported to team security that a racial slur was used by one fan toward another. The Red Sox said the offending fan was ejected from the stands and has been told they are “no longer welcome at Fenway Park.” The team didn’t identify the person.

GarPax likely sticking with same direction

No surprise there.

John Paxson is still vice president of basketball operations, while Gar Forman is still general manager.

Again, Bulls status quo with no change of power on the horizon or additions to that dynamic.

And as Paxson and Forman pointed out in Wednesday’s end-of-the-season address, very little could be changing with the on-the-court product this offseason because of the corner the front office has painted itself into with this current roster make-up.

In the end, it was 40-plus minutes of a lot of talk with shallow substance.

What Paxson would divulge in some detail is that while they would love to go out and build a championship-caliber team around Jimmy Butler by adding another superstar, well, that’s just not realistic for them.

That’s why when Paxson meets with Dwyane Wade and Butler separately in

Bulls vice president of basketball operations the next month, he will reiterate that the plan moving forward remains being competitive while developing youth.

“Like I said, Dwyane has a [$23.8 million player] option and we’re going to sit down with him and talk to him about all of this as well,” Paxson said.

“The thing with Jimmy is all of us would love to go out and get another superstar player to go along with him, but right now the situation we’re in with the salaries we have, that type of thing, that’s a difficult thing for us to manage.”

While Paxson did confirm that he and Butler would meet to discuss the direction of the team, the Sun-Times reported last week that the two have already scheduled a time frame to talk, and that the front office was committed to doing damage control on the re-

lationship.

Butler has been the subject of trade rumors for almost two years now, and has privately expressed his anger about the front office not saying enough publicly to show a commitment to him.

While Butler knows that even a commitment can change if the right trade comes the Bulls’ way, his feeling has been that it’s almost as if GarPax have downplayed his importance.

The Sun-Times reported several times over the past month that if the front office doesn’t believe that Butler is a significant piece moving forward, Butler is poised to tell them go ahead and move him this summer. His first choice is stay in Chicago, but not to stay in the trade rumor mill.

At least on Wednesday, Paxson publicly started taking steps in mending

that bridge, even if they were baby steps.

“I respect very much Jimmy Butler’s professionalism and how he goes about his job,” Paxson said. “I think the one thing we will do is continue to communicate with him. Like I said earlier, we’re going to sit down and talk to him.

We can say anything to him, he can say anything to us. He can ask any questions he wants and we’ll be honest with him. Look, that’s the responsibility for us to do. He’s our best player.”

The big winner on Wednesday?

Veteran point guard Rajon Rondo, who will make $13.4 million next season, unless the Bulls buy him out for $3 million. They seem set on the first option.

“As we get younger, it’s still really important to have quality veterans around your young players,” Paxson said. “To a man, our young people loved Rajon. He was great in the locker room.

He was great off the court with these guys.”

Paxson did say that Nikola Mirotic is also a player they want to retain, but the market will determine that for the restricted free agent.

Showcase of talent ARTigras Celebration of the Arts returns for 3rd year

eKALB – The third annual ARTigras Celebration of the Arts will end on a different note this year; after students’ artistic talents are showcased throughout the city, a variety show celebrating all forms of expression will bring the event to a close.

The event will take place Saturday and include an Art Walk from gallery to gallery in DeKalb and a variety show at the Egyptian Theatre.

Ellen Anderson, director of special events at Northern Illinois University, said the Arts Parade done in the past has been tabled for now. The Art Walk should make it easier for parents and other guests to casually browse the exhibits during the day before ending the evening with a big celebration, she said.

“We hope some day to bring [the parade] back,” she said.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the variety show, which is free and open to the public.

Anderson said event organizers are expecting a diverse range in the ages of performers and their talents.

“It’s not all college students; there will be a good mix of community members as well,” she said. “We definitely want there to be both.”

The variety show is being produced by Dance Dimensions, 645 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

Miranda Cordes, owner of the dance studio, said those who attend the variety show will be greeted with Mardi Gras-themed decorations, music and dancers in the lobby.

The variety show will feature musicians, singers, dancers, spoken-word poets, musical theater, a contortionist and others. Audience members are encouraged to come in costume.

“It can be any kind of costume: fun, colorful, crazy,” Cordes said.

The audience will vote on their favorite talent. The first-place winner will receive a $500 cash prize, and the second- and third-place winners will take home smaller prizes.

One of the youngest acts will be a 10-year-old girl who will sing and tap dance, Cordes said.

“It’s just going to be a fun evening,” she said. “It’s bringing out talent in the community that you may not know about, and getting the audience to be involved, too.”

“We wanted everyone to gather in one spot at the end of the night to celebrate in a way that incorporates all forms of art,” Cordes said.

Dana Stover, wife of NIU’s President Doug Baker and member of the ARTigras steering committee, said the arts parade used to be the kick-off for ARTigras, but closing off Lincoln Highway for the parade is always a challenge. She said organizers instead chose to try to build on the success of the Fall Art Walk.

“We’re excited to try new things, but the core mission is the same, which is a celebration of the arts for NIU students and community members,” Stover said.

Stover also said the parade was not able to showcase all forms of art, as some talents are better suited for the stage. This year’s ARTigras will celebrate them all.

“It gives them a chance to be in the limelight for a short amount of time, while the audience gets to enjoy the talent and the spirit we have here,” she said.

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, led by music director and conductor Linc Smelser, will present its final concert of its 40th season on Saturday. “Bach to Beethoven” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

On the evening’s program will be Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, BWV 1046, by Johann Sebastian Bach and Symphony No. 9, Op. 125, by Ludwig van Beethoven, featuring Cara Jovanovich, soprano, Tracy Watson, alto, Christian Ketter, tenor, and David Govertsen, bass.

The orchestra will be joined by the DeKalb Festival Chorus and members of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Epsilon Rho Chapter, Paul Marchese, choral director.

Changes in programs, dates, times and location of concerts will be posted on the KSO website.

Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before the concert.

Join Bread & Roses women’s chorus on Sunday, May 7, for an afternoon of “Songs of Caring and Compassion” directed by Peggy Safford and help to provide caring and compassion to the Welcome Essentials Pantry at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb. A good-will donation will assist WE in providing household essentials in a welcoming environment.

The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

The chorus will perform a few very familiar songs, including “Hallelujah,” written by Leonard Cohen, and “Change of Heart,” by social activist Holly Near, as well as “Never Sit Down,” the powerful “The Women Gather,” and the premiere of the moving “A Rose at My Feet,” by Bread & Roses member Jan Knudsen.

Some songs will be sung a cappella, others will be accompanied by Bread & Roses chorus members and pianists Lynn Fischer-McCanne and Jan Vandermeer. Guest cellist Elizabeth Eastman-Becker will accompany the chorus on “A Rose at My Feet.”

Welcome Essentials Pantry is a social justice ministry of UUFD that began in 2014 when two members of the congregation shared their experiences of poverty and “living on the edge” during a Sunday worship service. Wooden Box Theater to present ‘Beatles Nite 7’ DAILY CHRONICLE The Hampton Inn in DeKalb will host area performance group Wooden Box Theater at 5 p.m. Friday, May 5, as they present “With a Little Luck: Beatles Nite 7,” an event highlighting theatrical performers, artistic performers and live music.

The event will act as the group’s seventh annual Beatles-themed event in DeKalb, with the title of the event being inspired by the Paul McCartney song of the same name.

“With a Little Luck” will be co-hosted by DeKalb Tattoo Company apprentice Robyn Renee, and longtime Wooden Box Theater performer Jade Cook, who has been with the group since 2011. Renee will act as artist announcer, and will offer insight on the tattoo art during the event.

The event’s music lineup will be highlighted by theatrical music duo foreverStardust (Bear Wolf and Zéphirine Moon Garden), along with Joel La Vaughn, Jamie Simon, Mia Lynell, Schuyler Gomer and David Rae. “With a Little Luck: Beatles Nite 7” will conclude Wooden Box Theater’s recent trilogy of storyline-based events, “Beatles, Angels and Bond,” which began in December at a James Bond themed event at Twin Tavern in

DeKalb, and was followed by “Charlies Angels Nite,” at Energize Fitness in Sycamore, and will conclude when the group presents their Beatles Nite on May 5.

Wooden Box Theater, as a performance and event writing team, began on stage during an edition of Open Mic at the House Cafe in the summer of 2006, and continues regularly directing events in the DeKalb and Geneva area.

Along with live music and guest appearances, the show also will feature, in a starring role, Maddie Steen, a DeKalb area hula hoop performance artist.

Steen coordinated hoop performances by guest artists for appearances in Wooden Box Theater events in 2016. She will make her debut with the group during Beatles Nite.

The event was written by both Daniel Sherrill and foreverStardust lead singer Zéphirine Moon Garden, a collaborator on Wooden Box Theater events since her debut in late 2011 with the group.

The event will be held in the meeting room at Hampton Inn, 663 S. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. A semiformal dress code is preferred for the event.

Indian Valley Community Band is an all-volunteer, multi-generational band founded in 1986 by three Sandwich band directors – Paul Rossok, Terry Wickwire and Joel Hawkinson – and has been entertaining audiences around the Fox Valley area ever since. It includes the musical talents of more than 30 band members from a dozen area communities.

Although some insect repellents with DEET have sunscreen mixed in, it’s best to steer clear of those. Sunscreen must be reapplied throughout the day to be effective.

However, since kids should only get one application of DEET a day, the mixed product is of limited use. It’s best to start with a base layer of sunscreen and then add insect repellent. You can then add more sunscreen throughout the day as needed.

Insect repellent should be applied to exposed skin and to clothing. When using a spray, apply it outdoors and be sure to keep it away from food. Make sure neither you nor your child inhales the product.

We find that while a spray works well on clothes, insect repellent wipes are great for precise applications to a child’s wriggling body. And never put insect repellent on a child’s hands, which so often find their way into mouths and eyes. Once back indoors, wash the treated skin with soap and water.

Treated clothes should be washed before wearing again.

One final thought: While repellents are a great tool, give them a boost by keeping kids in long-sleeved pants and shirts when in the buggy great outdoors.

Dear Doctors: Is it safe to use an insect repellent with DEET on my 5-month-old? Here in Tennessee, we’re approaching prime mosquito season, and we want our little boy to be able to play outside without getting all bitten up.

Dear Reader: There’s nothing like the thin, high whine of a mosquito to let you know your picnic or hike or nap on the porch is about to be ruined by slapping, itching and scratching. Unfortunately, mosquitoes also are known carriers of serious diseases. West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis have been diagnosed in some areas of the United States. The Zika virus, while rare in the United States, also is a mosquito-borne disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, insect repellents that contain DEET are safe to use on children 2 months old and older. DEET, which is shorthand for (deep breath) N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, is the active ingredient in a wide array of insect repellents.

DEET does not kill insects. It works by blocking the sensory mechanisms that tell insects something delicious is nearby. Instead of detecting the chemical markers we humans emit in our breath and sweat, the bugs smell ... nothing. They pass us by.

There are specific guidelines you should follow when using DEET on a child. The CDC recommends you never use a product with a concentration of more than 30 percent DEET. The percentage of DEET in a product doesn’t make the insect repellent stronger or more potent; what that number measures is the length of time the insect repellent will be effective.

Products with concentrations of 10 percent keep bugs at bay for about two hours.

Those with 21 to 25 percent DEET provide between five to eight hours of protection.

A couple of days ago, we learned that after an opening bid, a takeout double and a pass, if fourth hand cue-bids the opener’s suit, it shows 12 points or more. But is that the only bid the advancer can make when this strong?

Of course not! Look at the South hand. What should he bid after one club - double - pass around to him?

With a balanced hand, a good holding in the opener’s suit (remember, partner is short in that suit) and no length in a major suit, the advancer may bid in no-trump. One no-trump shows 6-9 points, two notrump 10-12 and three no-trump a surprising 13-15. Here, South should leap to three no-trump.

After this is passed out and West has led the club jack, how should South proceed?

If South has a four-card major, he might well start with a cue-bid, planning to fall back on three no-trump if a 4-4 fit in that suit does not exist.

Declarer starts with eight top tricks: four hearts, one diamond and three clubs. Two more winners can be established in spades. South should take the first trick and immediately play a spade.

West does best to capture that trick and shift to the diamond king, but declarer can win and persevere in spades. The defenders cannot take more than two spades and two diamonds.

When in no-trump, immediately play on the suit where you wish to establish winners.
