POLL Moving Kishwaukee College YESTERDAY’S forward through challenging times RESULTS

When I first started talking with the board of trustees at Kishwaukee College in December 2015, the state of Illinois was five months into the period of no state budget.

Now it is 16 months later, and still no state budget. While we have received some stopgap state funding, the college for the past two years has operated with an average of 41 percent of the state funding it received in fiscal 2015.

That has meant significant change for the college. Things cannot remain the same with millions of dollars less in revenue.

I applaud the staff at Kishwaukee College for the hard work they have done to make necessary changes to continue to serve the needs of our students.

Since my arrival at the college, it’s not only been a time of reducing expenditures, but it’s also been a time of change in our services and processes to best serve our students.

As we examine how we do business at our organization, we are looking at what we do and how we do it, while staying focused on our students. Through all of these changes and hard work, we need to make sure that we are retaining our excellent faculty and staff to ensure we continue to support the rich tradition of the college by providing an excellent education to our students.

Nationwide, enrollments at community colleges have been declining for several years, and Kish is no exception. Unemployment is

SAN FRANCISCO – As Apple’s stash of cash grows, so does the possibility that the world’s most valuable company will use some of the money for a huge acquisition that would expand its empire beyond iPhones and other gadgets.

The company currently holds more than a quarter-trillion dollars it could use to go shopping. So far, the guessing game has primarily focused on possible targets such as Netflix and Tesla Motors.

Either deal could make sense, given Apple’s long-running interest in providing a TV service to consumers and its more recent work on self-driving cars.

Sycamore’s Cinco de Mayo Festival returns for its 20th year

SYCAMORE – After starting as a party in back of a Mexican restaurant 20 years ago, the Cinco de Mayo Festival has become a cultural staple in Sycamore.

It’s so big that it can’t be fit into a single day.

Jesus Romero, festival founder and Taxco Restaurant owner, said the celebration is expanding to a two-day event in honor of the 20th anniversary. Half the proceeds will go toward an endowment fund for Kishwaukee College scholarships, and the rest will be donated to some of the local nonprofits that participate in the festival.

“Sycamore has been really good for me and my family, so I believe it’s only fair to give back a little bit,” Romero said. “In my humble Mexican opinion, I believe investing in your community is the best investment you can do in a lifetime.”

The festivities will take place Saturday and Sunday on Bill Johnson Boulevard behind Taxco Restaurant, 223 W. State St., and on Maple Street between State and Exchange streets.

Festivities for adults will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, including a street dance featuring American band The Party Doctors, margaritas, a beer garden, and food from Taxco Restaurant and Nina’s Tacos food truck.

Sunday will be dedicated to children’s activities and performances for all ages to enjoy, beginning with a parade at 1 p.m. around the DeKalb County Courthouse led by Conexión Comunidad of DeKalb.

From 2 to 3:30 p.m. taco- and quesadilla-eating contests, a salsa-preparing contest and a milk-drinking contest for children will take place.

Mexican music and dance performances will follow from 3:30 to 5 p.m. with groups such as Rayitos del Sol, Ballet Folklorico Monarcas, Mariachi Moderno and Mariachi Familia Nuñez.

Romero said Mariachi Familia Nuñez performed at the second Sycamore Cinco de Mayo Festival as a group of brothers and sisters, and now it includes their children and grandchildren as well.

Children can enjoy activities such as a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, wall climbing, a bounce house and piñatas from 1 to 5 p.m.

Local nonprofits such as Oaken Acres Wildlife, Sycamore History Museum and the Midwest Museum of Natural History will have booths set up with various educational and fun activities.

More live music will close the festival from 5 to 9 p.m., including a DJ, Los Dos Alegres and Luis y Alberto.

Romero said the festival began as a party behind Taxco to raise money for Relay for Life, and about $600 was raised. Although he thought the event

was disorganized, he was surprised at the positive reception from the community.

“The next day, I saw that we made it to the newspaper, and I felt like it would be a good idea to do it again,” he said.

Over the years, collaborations with the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, local nonprofits, volunteers and sponsors have helped to grow the festival into what it is today, Romero said.

He said Sycamore and DeKalb County are full of people dedicated to helping one another and volunteering; however, many still do not know about the services provided by local nonprofits or how to get involved.

“A lot of people come over here, and I really believe this can be also like a bridge to reach out to the community to let them know what the organizations have to offer and what they do,” Romero said.

Romero said he typically expects about 1,000 people to attend the festival, but sometimes attendance depends on weather.

“It’s unreal,” he said. “It’s really hard for me to believe it’s been that many years. I love it. In the beginning, I said this was a one-time deal.”

Man seeks new trial in ’05 Genoa slaying

Says ineffective legal counsel led to conviction

SYCAMORE – Kirk Swaggerty said that if he’d had a better lawyer, he never would have been convicted in the 2005 slaying of Michael Kappa, and he’s seeking a new trial.

On Tuesday in DeKalb County court, Swaggerty’s new lawyer, public defender Dan Transier, asked a judge to order the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to turn over audio recordings of the 2011 trial.

Swaggerty, 46, was convicted in August 2011 and sentenced to Kirk 39 years in prison for Swaggerty murder, home invasion and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He’s serving his sentence in Pontiac Correctional Center and filed a post-conviction relief petition Sept. 20, 2016, after his appeals were exhausted.

The post-conviction relief petition is a three-step process. Once Transier amends and files the petition, the state can respond, which usually comes in the form of a motion to dismiss.

A status hearing, which Swaggerty doesn’t need to attend, was set for 9 a.m. June 20.

Swaggerty was charged with murder because he was a co-conspirator in a plan to rob a Genoa home. Kappa and another man actually broke

into the home, but one of the residents took away the gun they were armed with and fatally shot Kappa.

Swaggerty was waiting at a local bar during the break-in, police said.

Swaggerty also is appealing the dismissal of a federal lawsuit he filed in August against DeKalb County prosecutors in Rockford, claiming they didn’t make good on promises when Swaggerty agreed to testify in the murder trial of Jack McCullough.

Swaggerty’s eight-page lawsuit, filed without an attorney, was dismissed Dec. 13, and Swaggerty filed an appeal Jan. 17. The lawsuit named former DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Trevarthen, former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell, the State’s Attorney’s Office and Swaggerty’s attorney, Peter Gruber.

Swaggerty is seeking $2 million in punitive damages and an additional $1 million from each of the defendants.

McCullough, who lives in Seattle, was convicted in September 2012 of the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph in Sycamore, a sentence that was vacated in April 2016 in DeKalb County court.

On April 12, he was granted a certificate of innocence. Two days later, he field a lawsuit against Illinois State Police, Sycamore police, Seattle police and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

McCullough’s lawsuit states that the State’s Attorney’s Office coerced inmates to lie during testimony, part of a plan to frame him.

Butler hiring new attorney, due back in court May 30

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb pastor facing child pornography charges has hired a new lawyer and now has until May 30 to decide whether to face trial or take a plea deal.

On April 10, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert ruled that Corey Butler, the 36-yearold pastor of Jesus is the Way Christian Corey Center in DeKalb and Butler a former mentor for DeKalb School District 428, had to make a decision Tuesday morning.

A status hearing was set for May 30. “... The judge and state’s attorney graciously, and I do mean that literally, gave us another 30 days,” said Chicago-based attorney Tom

Benno, who has represented Butler until now. “This is a very serious matter. He’s getting another 30 days to really consider the offer and discuss it with his family and his new attorney.”

Butler is charged with possessing and disseminating child pornography.

He was freed after posting $1,000 bail shortly after his arrest in April 2015.

Prosecutor Alicia Caplan said a deadline on the plea deal hasn’t been set.

“I don’t plan to keep it open forever,” she said.

Members of Butler’s family and congregation were in court Tuesday morning, and all declined to comment – all but Butler.

“In any legal matter, it’s always a tough decision when someone’s life is at stake,” he said.

Born: January 14, 1933 Died: April 28, 2017

Carol L. Carter, 90, of DeKalb formerly of Malta, passed away on May 1, 2017, at Kishwaukee Hospital.

She was born on March 10, 1927, in Lockport, Illinois, and was the daughter of Edna (Conant) and Carl Johnson.

Carol graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1945. She married Donald E. Carter in Joliet, Illinois, and moved to Malta in 1972. During her life, she worked as a children’s librarian and in high schools as a cook. Carol was a loving homemaker, active in her church and local women’s clubs and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed watching her favorite old-time TV shows.

She is survived by sons, James Barcus and Timothy Carter; and daughter, Janis (Barcus) Mika. Sister, Maxine (Johnson) Breen; and brothers, Ronald Johnson and Parker Zimmerman. Grandchildren, Jamie, Julie, Scott, Diane and Melissa.

Six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Carol is preceded in death by parents and husbands.

Memorial service will be held Thursday May 4, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. in the Malta United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Noah R. Panlilio Senior Pastor officiating.

Cremation will take place at the Finch Crematory. Visitation will be held Thursday May 4, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service in the church.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the family to be established at a later date.

Einer O. Hillquist Jr., 84, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Friday, April 28, 2017, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Born January 14, 1933, in Sycamore, Illinois, the son of Einer Sr. and Emy (Johnson) Hillquist, Einer married Rhea Nelson on August 22, 1953, in Virgil, Illinois. Einer was a graduate of Sycamore High School, Class of 1950. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean conflict. He was a graduate of GMI General Motors Institute and the owner of Fargo Motors Buick for over 40 years. Einer was past president of the Sycamore Lions Club, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Tebala Shrine Club, and the VFW. DeKALB – Although change occurred for the DeKalb School District 428 Board during Tuesday’s meeting when two new board members were sworn in, some things stayed the same, as Victoria Newport was re-elected president.

According to official results of April’s election, which were proclaimed during the meeting, Jeff Hallgren received the most votes, followed

by Valerie Pena Hernandez and Newport.

The oath of office for the three was administered by interim Superintendent Brad Hawk, who was appointed as temporary president for the procedure of nominating and electing a new board president, vice president and secretary.

Current Vice President Vickie Hernan-Faivre and secretary Mary Hess, who both decided not to run for re-election, were presented with awards of merit for their service to the board before leaving the meeting.

Parking lot improvements planned

SYCAMORE – More parking will be available on nights and weekends in downtown Sycamore with the approval of improvements to the Auto Meter Products parking lot.

The Sycamore City Council unanimously adopted a resolution Monday to spend $115,000 in tax increment financing funds to improve the parking area, which is along Sacramento Street between a city-owned parking lot and the DeKalb County Community Foundation office in the old train depot.

The city-owned parking lot on the corner of State and Sacramento streets next to the Sycamore State Theater also will see improvements in conjunction with the project, such as landscaping

and base shaping.

As part of the agreement to improve the lot owned by Auto Meter, 413 W. Elm St., the business will open the lot for public parking after 5 p.m. on weeknights and after noon on weekends. Public parking will extend until 6 a.m. the next day.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the city will put up a sign that shows the parking hours and aligns with city branding.

“They know if they park there, there’s a psychology that you’re in the downtown area and you’re willing to walk, even if you can’t see that store or that restaurant,” he said.

Improvements will include readjusting drainage, installing curbs, sealing the lot with a bituminous surface and painting new stripes on it during the

2017 construction season.

Gregory said lighting also will be added to the lot, possibly configured north and south along Sacramento Street so that lights illuminate the city’s diagonal street parking spaces as well.

The city also will plant trees and bushes in the lot, with Auto Meter in charge of buying them and maintaining the landscaping over time. Auto Meter also will be responsible for resealing the lot every five years, after which the city will repaint the parking space stripes.

The agreement extends for 20 years; however, Auto Meter has the option to terminate the contract. The business would have to refund the full $115,000 if terminated within five years and varying lesser amounts afterward.

Gregory said these provisions would allow Auto Meter to use the lot as space

to expand with another building if the owner chooses to do so in the future.

He said the parking lot improvements came about from the 2014 comprehensive plan. At the time, businesses indicated that the city could enhance the downtown area by fixing parking issues.

“Generally throughout the day, there’s ample parking between city lots and off-street, on-street parking. Where we find that there’s a crunch is nights and weekends, especially as the restaurants,” Gregory said. “We’ve got a significant amount of successful restaurants that people come and frequent, and that’s a good problem to have.”

He said the project is a good use of TIF funds, as it will address concepts from the comprehensive plan, help out a business and improve parking availability for residents.

DeKalb woman faces aggravated battery charges

NEW YORK – Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that she’s taking responsibility for her 2016 election loss but believes misogyny, Russian interference and questionable decisions by the FBI also influenced the outcome.

The former Democratic presidential nominee offered extensive comments about the election during the Women for Women International’s annual luncheon in New York. Clinton said she’s been going through the “painful” process of reliving the 2016 contest while writing a book.

“It wasn’t a perfect campaign.

There is no such thing,” Clinton said in a Q&A session with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “But I was on the way to winning until a combination of [FBI Director] Jim Comey’s letter on Oct. 28 and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me but got scared off.”

She reminded the audience packed with women that she earned 3 million more votes than President Donald Trump.

Ex-officer pleads guilty in black man’s slaying

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A white former police officer whose killing of an unarmed black man running from a traffic stop was captured on cellphone video pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal civil rights

The plea from Michael Slager, 35, came five months after a jury deadlocked on state murder charges against him in the 2015 shooting of Walter Scott. South Carolina prosecutors had planned to retry Slager, but as part of Tuesday’s plea bargain, they agreed to drop the murder case.

Slager admitted violating Scott’s civil rights by shooting him without justification.

CNN won’t run Trump ad referring to ‘fake news’

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s supporters are accusing CNN of censorship for not airing an advertisement touting the president’s accomplishments, which the network said Tuesday it rejected because it was its own form of fake news.

The ad from Trump’s campaign – he became a declared candidate for re-election in 2020 on Jan. 19 – said that “America has rarely seen such success” and lists a series of actions from the first 100 days of his presidency.

“You wouldn’t know it from watching the news. America is winning, and President Trump is making America great again,” the ad says. Trump tweet: Gov’t ‘needs a good shutdown’

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that the U.S. government “needs a good shutdown” this fall to fix a “mess” in the Senate, signaling on Twitter his displeasure with a bill to keep operations running. But Republican leaders and Trump himself also praised the stopgap measure as a major accomplishment and a sign of his masterful negotiating with Democrats.

On the defensive, Trump and his allies issued a flurry of contradictory statements ahead of key votes in Congress on a $1.1 trillion spending bill to keep the government at full speed through September. After advocating for a future shutdown, the president hailed the budget agreement as a boost for the military, border security and other top priorities.

“This is what winning looks like,” Trump said during a ceremony honoring the Air Force Academy football team. “Our Republican team had its own victory – under the radar,” Trump said, calling the bill “a clear win for the American people.” Late in the day, the White House said he would indeed sign the bill.

Yet Trump’s morning tweets hardly signaled a win and came after Democrats gleefully claimed victory in denying him much of his wish list despite being the minority party. They sounded a note of defeat, blaming Senate rules for a budget plan that merited closing most government operations.

But the White House then rallied to make the case to the public – and perhaps to a president who famously hates losing – that he actually had prevailed in the negotiations. Budget Director Mick Mulvaney briefed reporters twice within a few hours to adamantly declare the administration’s success. He was joined at his

second briefing by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. And Trump himself used the normally nonpolitical football ceremony to proclaim his own success.

Mulvaney, criticizing Democrats for celebrating, said Trump was “frustrated with the fact that he negotiated in good faith with the Democrats and they went out and tried to spike the football to make him look bad.”

Asked how the president would define a “good shutdown,” Mulvaney suggested “it would be one that fixes this town.”

Trump’s embrace of such a disruptive event came days after he accused Senate Democrats of seeking that same outcome and obstructing majority Republicans during budget negotiations.

Lawmakers announced Sunday that they had reached an agreement to avoid a shutdown until Oct. 1 – a deal that does not include several provisions sought by Trump, including money for a border wall.

It also came at the start of a week in which the House is considering a possible vote on a health care overhaul that would repeal and replace Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The spending bill is set for a House vote on Wednesday, when it’s likely to win widespread bipartisan support, though a host of GOP conservatives will oppose the measure, calling it a missed opportunity.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin defended the package, calling it an “important first step in the right direction” that included a “big down payment” on border security and the military. And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said the bill “delivers some important conservative wins.”

In fact, the White House on Monday had praised the deal as a win for the nation’s military, health benefits for coal miners and other Trump priorities.

We want to believe

Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan sat down together last week and discussed the state budget.

Seeing as the two haven’t met to talk about the budget since December – or if they have, they didn’t make it public – this might seem like a promising, desperately-needed step toward resolving the 22-month budget impasse that has left social service agencies, universities and vendors dangling as they wonder what financial crumbs the state might throw at them this week.

Cynics we have become when it comes to most issues decided in the Capitol, we can’t help but fear it was just the latest act of political theater. We’d love to be proven wrong, but all we have to go on is statements issued after the closed-door, private meeting – and they sounded all too familiar.

Madigan: “I requested a meeting with Governor Rauner to ensure he understood my desire to pass a full-year budget and discuss the urgent need for a resolution to the state budget impasse. Throughout the governor’s time in office, we have agreed to seven compromise budget bills when negotiations are allowed to focus on the budget. ... I ask the governor to turn his focus to the budget.”

Our translation: The only budget getting out of the House is one that doesn’t include the reforms the governor wants, and it’s Rauner’s fault if that doesn’t happen.

The Rauner Administration: “For the first time in more than two years, Speaker Madigan today hinted that he may be willing to enact a truly balanced budget with changes that will help create jobs, properly fund our schools and lower property taxes ... the governor remains optimistic that all sides can work together to enact a balanced budget with changes that fix our broken system and restore balanced budgets for the long-term through strong economic growth.”

Our translation: The only budget getting my signature is one that includes reforms, and it will be Madigan’s fault if that doesn’t happen.

Those statements could have been issued at any time in the past year. Imagine the gasps of shock that would come from an abrupt plot twist if Madigan and Rauner announced they reached a compromise on a full-year budget. Of course, that enthusiasm would have to be tempered by the acknowledgment that an agreement on a plan is only the start. Any state budget needs to be balanced (a word we note was missing from Madigan’s statement). Spending needs to match revenue. And that’s just for the next year. Illinois does not become fiscally stable without long-term reforms to pensions, education funding and business regulations, among other changes.

We’re not as optimistic as some who saw Thursday’s meeting as a sign of hope that Rauner and Madigan can forge even a tentative truce.

But governor and Mr. Speaker, you have no idea how badly we want to be mistaken on this. We’re begging you, please prove us wrong.

Leaders OK ‘a good-enough budget’ Congressional leaders have settled on a bipartisan spending plan to keep the government open for the next five months, and, to judge from the document, their priorities are not President Donald Trump’s priorities.

To be sure, the $1.1 trillion measure includes $1.5 billion in new border-security money and exceeds previously enacted defense spending caps to the tune of $14.8 billion; Trump hailed both as victories for his agenda. But the president’s border wall gets not one dollar – indeed, Trump’s abandonment of a demand for funding was the concession that made this deal possible.

Meanwhile, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Environmental Protection Agency, Pell Grants for college students and Community Development Block Grants were held essentially harmless, with respect to their fiscal 2016 spending levels. The National Institutes of Health gets a $2 billion increase. All were targeted for big cuts in Trump’s fiscal 2018 budget plan.

These results are a tribute to the Democrats’ skillful leveraging of their power, even as a minority in both houses; to the Republicans’ pragmatic fear of a politically costly partial government shutdown – and to the stubborn persistence of good old- fashioned political horse-trading, even under this supposedly disruptive president.

The establishment is in low regard just now in

politics. Yet when the government needs to function despite polarization and division, the art of compromise – even of the least-common-denominator variety – is what keeps it going. Fortunately, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., understand that.

One heartening element of the bill incorporates a bipartisan commitment to the idea that America will keep faith with those who have served this country abroad – even if they aren’t Americans. It provides for the admission to this country of 2,500 Afghans who worked as translators and the like for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, under the Special Immigrant Visa program.

The program’s authority had lapsed, forcing the government to stop processing new applications two months ago. Now that situation has been remedied – at least for five months.

It’s a temporary victory for basic common sense – much like the spending bill itself. The measure keeps agencies operating, but no one should be under any illusion that it fixes government in the sense of actually restoring a sustainable long-term balance between revenues and outlays.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

On Wednesday, under pressure from UCB, the two conservative groups that were sponsoring her visit rescinded the invitation, and Coulter said she would not come.

Many of my more liberal Twitter followers, loath to support Coulter on ... well ... anything, have resisted – sometimes with desperately creative logic – the notion that this is an issue of free speech.

Here are some of their arguments and my answers: Them: The First Amendment applies

only to government censorship.

Me: You’re right. And UCB is a public institution, supported by taxpayer money, which makes this a government issue.

Them: She’s milking this for publicity.

Me: Maybe. So what?

Them: She doesn’t care about free speech. She’s getting paid.

Me: I get paid when I speak, too.

Again, so what?

Them: UCB never actually said she couldn’t speak.

Me: The courts have held that you may not “unduly burden” the right of free speech, i.e., impose special requirements upon a controversial speaker.

That’s why the city of Miami lost in federal court in 2003 after it billed a promoter for the cost of extra security required to bring a band loathed by some in the Cuban exile community to the Miami Arena.

Here’s the bottom line: I don’t care whether it’s Castro’s favorite band playing in downtown Miami or a viperous harridan speaking at Berkeley. It wouldn’t matter whether it were Louis

Farrakhan at Ole Miss or Bernie Sanders at the High School of Economics and Finance just off Wall Street.

The right to free expression is either secured for all or it’s guaranteed to none.

So here is what should offend you even more than Coulter, particularly if you live in a place like Berkeley, with its 121,000 people and 170 police officers.

A bunch of thugs just established that you can bully a public institution in a relatively small town into disinviting a controversial speaker. Which of our other freedoms will they come after next?

Coulter called Wednesday “a sad day for free speech.” This next sentence will cause physical pain for some of you to read, but you need to just the same: Ann Coulter was right.

Math-challenged Republicans should not stop budget

The Washington Post When congressional negotiators reached a budget agreement late Sunday, the breaking news was followed by predictably tiresome complaints, whining and hand-wringing from so-called fiscally conservative Republicans.

They are criticizing the president and GOP leadership, saying mainstream Republicans gave up on their pledge to cut this program and that program. But that’s an unfair reading of what is really in this budget.

Monday, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, went so far as to say, “I think you will see a lot of conservatives vote against this plan this week.”

One common affliction among Freedom Caucus members is that they are mathematically illiterate.

Specifically, they cannot count votes.

I think President Donald Trump avoided Washington’s game of budget brinkmanship pretty well. And this week’s vote should show just that.

If you look at everything going on in Washington right now, it’s hard to imagine a situation in which Trump and GOP leaders could have negotiated a better budget than they did with this funding bill.

In fact, a lot of people in Washington thought we were headed to an embarrassing continuing resolution.

But the budget that members will vote on later this week is more comprehensive than most had expected.

With repeal and replace still viable in the House and tax reform coming into focus, this was no time to get bogged down in the usual budget battles.

Despite the carping, this budget does some important things. And, remember, the battle over the next budget starts as soon as this one is

passed.

But for now, this budget jumpstarts the rebuilding of our military, bolsters our nation’s border security, fully funds the largest military pay raise in six years, and, in addressing an important and underreported issue, finally decouples the one-for-one spending of nondefense discretionary spending with funding for the nation’s defenses. If anything, I see this budget as “The Art of the Deal” at work.

Imagine the criticism and consequences that the Trump White House and the entire GOP would be facing right now if we were in or on the brink of a government shutdown.

Frankly, I’m surprised that the Democrats positioned themselves so they couldn’t make a shutdown happen.

After all, there’s no question of who would have gotten blamed.

Having watched Washington budget battles for the past 35 years, it is my view that the GOP has escaped a

calamity and will live to fight another day over the next budget. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wisconsin, wasn’t just spinning the political reality of the budget, he was right to call it “a significant departure from the Obama years, and a big win for the new administration.” The president’s Republican critics can choose to have government shutdowns and line-item grievances, but doing so only comes at the expense of Republicans demonstrating that they can properly run the government and execute an agenda.

Look, I’m the guy who once called her a “viperous harridan,” OK? That was 11 years ago in this space. I described her as such after she savaged four widows whose husbands died in the Sept. 11 attacks, denouncing them as “witches” and “broads” who were “enjoying their husbands’ deaths.”

So I don’t need to be convinced Ann Coulter is a bad person. But for as much as readers with whom I have been sparring on Twitter the past few days might wish otherwise, her character is not the issue here.

“Here” meaning last week’s standoff between the abrasive conservative pundit and the University of California, Berkeley. As you might know, Coulter was invited to speak on the famously liberal campus, but UCB first restricted the time of day she could do so, then tried to persuade her to switch to a day when classes are suspended as students study for finals. When Coulter refused, the school canceled the event.

Berkeley, you should know, has been the site of recent political street fighting. A February riot, orchestrated by about 100 black-clad punks, caused

DeKALB – It’s been awhile since Jason Cavanaugh gave a postgame speech, but the frustrated Sycamore baseball coach gave one Tuesday – after a win, no less.

The Spartans continued their stretch of shaky offense but rode the right arm of starting pitcher Jack Mizgalski to a 2-1 victory over DeKalb at Northern Illinois University’s Ralph McKinzie Field in the first game of a series between the two rivals.

“We’ve been absolutely relying on our pitching,” Cavanaugh said.

“That’s the first postgame speech I’ve given in two years. I generally don’t do that, but I’ve been so frustrated watching us take fastballs for strikes and then swinging at the next curveball – we had so many 0-2 counts today that we just didn’t give ourselves much of a chance when we had chances early in the game to score.”

While Sycamore (16-6 overall, 6-4 Northern Illinois Big 12) has been winning games – it has won six of its past seven – it has relied heavily on its pitching. In the past four conference games, the Spartans have scored a total of nine runs, but won three of them – all by one run.

Mizgalski, Sycamore’s ace, threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and could have thrown a no-hitter. Two of the hits – a double and a triple by Noah Valin – were on fly balls misplayed by the Sycamore outfielders, and the other, an RBI bunt single by Charles Roberts, came after Valin’s leadoff triple in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mizgalski retired DeKalb’s 3-4-5 hitters in order with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to right field.

“He was lights out,” Cavanaugh said. “He pitched a great game today.

That’s as well as you can pitch.”

For DeKalb, the loss is the 12th in a row, but coach Dedric Wright said it was a step in the right direction. In the past three games, the Barbs (6-16 overall, 0-7 Northern Illinois Big 12) were outscored 41-1.

the game was that we came out and competed,” Wright said. “We faced a good pitcher on their side today, but we came out and competed.”

DeKalb starter Derek Kyler got into trouble frequently, but managed to escape relatively unscathed. The Spartans stranded runners on third base in the first four innings – including the bases loaded twice – but Kyler finished allowing only two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

“Derek worked deep into a lot of counts,” Wright said. “We went 3-2, 2-2, but he made some pitches there and got us out of some innings there. ... Overall, he pitched great and Eric came in, usually he’s one of our starters, but this series I’m looking at him to come in and relieve and he came in and shut them down in the last two innings.”

The Spartans got their scoring from sophomore Logan Riley, who hit a solo home run in the second inning and added a go-ahead RBI groundout in the top of the third. After Sycamore left the bases loaded in the first inning, Riley, the No. 7 hitter in the lineup, hit his homer to left field – his first of the season.

“I should have hit him sixth today, because the sixth hitter strikes out with the bases loaded, and then the seven hitter comes up and hits a solo homer,” Cavanaugh said. “That’s just

bad coaching is all that is.”

By the numbers: Along with Riley’s home run, Zach Carlsen, Jason Wittenberg, Tyler Didio and Jarod Montavon all had singles for Sycamore.

After allowing the first two batters to reach base, Mizgalski retired 15 of the next 16 he faced.

Beyond the stats: Kyler got out of jams with a third-out strikeout in the first three innings – stranding six runners combined in those frames.

They said it: “Absolutely,” Cavanaugh said when asked whether the Spartans are underachieving. “If you ask everybody in our dugout, they’d say the same thing. We’re all capable of swinging the bats better than we’re swinging it. They all did it last year (when Sycamore made the Class 3A Supersectionals). All these guys were on the team last year and swung the bats better than what we have so far.”

Up next: The two teams play at Sycamore at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Late goal lifts Spartans into tie Collingbourne back from injury, scores for Knights

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – When she heard the clang of the ball off the goalpost, Kaneland goalkeeper Emma Ball said she was relieved, thinking that Saydie Holland’s header for Sycamore bounced out of bounds or back into play.

When she saw the ball in the back of the net, she said she was disappointed, and it led Sycamore to a 1-1 tie against the Knights.

“I was thinking it went out or went back into play,” Ball said. “So when

I saw it in the back of the net, it was kind of a downer. But it’s OK.” Kaneland got on the board with 10:18 left in the first half when Holly Collingbourne – playing in her first game since being hit in the face with a ball two weeks ago against DeKalb – scored on an assist from Abbie Lomahan. The DeKalb game was Collingbourne’s first game back after missing most of the early season with an injury.

“Her missing so many games the last two years, it’s always nice to have her back,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “It was a nice shot.”

Sycamore attacked the net strong all game, and the second half was no exception. Cali Carl let a free kick fly in the 58th minute, but Ball punched it away.

The Spartans finally connected in the final five minutes, with Holland taking a corner kick from Carl with a

header and banking it in off the goalpost.

“We kind of escaped with one there,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said. “It was getting close to the end of the game. We cut it a little close for my taste, but we managed to squeak out the tie, and that’s a favorable result over a loss.”

Sycamore (13-1-4 overall, 5-0-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) dominated possession early, inundating Ball with shot after shot. She started in the first two minutes with a diving save on a shot by Kierah Meier and didn’t let up.

The defense for Kaneland (9-6-1, 2-31) also stepped up when needed. After Meier’s attempt, Sycamore’s Taylor Meier got past Ball one-on-one, caught up to the ball and hit a slow dribbler, but Olivia Lutter cleared it.

“It would have been a completely different game if we put one or two of

those away, and we certainly had the opportunities,” Lichamer said. “We had a nice quick start, didn’t take a while to get going and created the opportunities but did not finish.”

By the numbers: Official save stats for Ball were not unavailable, but unofficially she made 12 saves.

Beyond the stats: Even though they don’t have a conference loss this year, the Spartans could lose command of the NIB 12 East with a loss Thursday at DeKalb. A win would put them up a game and a half, with the tiebreaker, on the Barbs.

They said it: “This was probably one of my best games this season so far, so that’s good,” Ball said. “It’s nice to come out with a tie because as a team we worked really well together, and I was glad to be a part of that.”

Up next: The Knights host Yorkville on Thursday while the Spartans head to rival DeKalb.

Hickey finished the game with four goals for the Barbs, who improved to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Bella Bettner, Siobhan Gallagher and Christina Ryzhov also added goals for the Barbs.

“We approached the game the right way,” DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton said.

“We got two big goals in the first three minutes that paved the way to success.”

The Barbs, who have won nine in a row, will host Sycamore (13-1-4, 5-0-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Lundkvist was named second team All-MAC for the second consecutive season, the conference announced Tuesday.

Shields gets shut down after setback in recovery

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – James Shields is being shut down after a setback in his recovery from a strained lat, manager Rick Renteria said Tuesday. The veteran right-hander went on the 10-day disabled list April 21 (retroactive to April 18) with a James strained lat and, after Shields throwing on flat ground again Tuesday, said “it’s not really responding the way I’d like it to be.”

“It’s kind of a slower process than I thought right now,” he said.

Shields made three starts, pitching to a 1.62 ERA, before going on the DL for the first time.

“He’s been throwing every other day and we’re going to kind of shut

that down a little bit and let that calm down,” Renteria said.

Status quo on Carlos Rodon

The Sox continue to be vague about the progress (or lack of) on left-hander Carlos Rodon, who has been on the disabled list all season with bursitis in his upper bicep.

Here was the question and answers exchange between reporters asking for an update on Rodon from Renteria: Has Rodon made progress?

“He continues to be on his throwing program and he’s doing well. He’s progressing well.”

Is he on a mound yet?

“He’s doing his throwing program, and he’s progressing well.”

Is that a no, or you can’t say?

“He’s throwing. And he’s progressing well. And we’re very happy with how he’s moving along.”

Rodon declined media interviews while he was in Chicago on the team’s home stand last week and has since returned to Arizona. If he has thrown off a mound since then, the Sox won’t say.

History lessons

Renteria, coaches Daryl Boston and Curt Hasler, Tim Anderson and Todd Frazier toured the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Anderson also attended while the Sox were in town last year.

“The things they have in the museum are really amazing,” Anderson said.

Many of the players championed at the museum were routinely subjected to what Adam Jones experienced Monday at Fenway Park, where the Orioles center fielder was berated by racist taunts.

“I can’t believe it still goes on today,” Frazier said. “It’s sickening people have to go to that extent. I’ve been yelled at

before. Stuff like that. But it’s not even close to what happened yesterday “It’s ugly. It shouldn’t be a part of this world any more.”

Anderson, the only African-American on the Sox roster, said “things happen and you have to keep a level head and don’t let it get to you. Hopefully those things can be taken care of.

“I see it as, we’re still human. We’re not going to go to their job and say bad things to them. We’re all, I mean, I don’t see color. I feel we all should be treated the same.”

CHICAGO – The Cubs just returned from Boston, where the atmosphere for three exciting games was fun, festive and friendly at Fenway Park.

Things took an ugly turn Monday, when Baltimore Orioles player Adam Jones, who is black, said he heard racist taunts at Fenway. Jones also had a bag of peanuts thrown at him.

Cubs players as well as manager Joe Maddon reacted to the situation Tuesday before their game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.

“You hear stuff, and you hear stuff at times,” outfielder Jason Heyward said.

“You’re going to hear stuff.

Everybody hears different stuff. Nothing shocks you.

Nothing really shocks me to

think there should be harsher punishment. We’re out there having fun. We’re trying to perform, hit home runs, be entertainers. Anytime that kind of thing happens, it puts a damper on things. I would love to see harsher punishment.”

Maddon said it’s important to keep up the movement toward positive change.

“My comments are pretty much widely shared,” he said. “But at some point you’ve got to do something about it. You just can’t keep listening and hearing it. Then you talk about it briefly and you table it and hope it goes away, knowing it never will.

“Whatever it takes, I’d definitely be on board with trying to support it or help it (punishment), but it has to come from organizations and groups within cities.

“I still believe that if there is something you don’t like and you consider it a legitimate problem, don’t just table it. Just keep working at it until you find somewhat of a solution that’s workable.”

Jones receives apology after fans’ racial taunts

BOSTON – Orioles outfielder Adam Jones called the incident in which he said fans inside Fenway Park yelled racial slurs at him and threw a bag of peanuts in his direction was “unfortunate,” with no place in today’s game.

Jones said Tuesday that he thinks the taunts speak to larger race issues in the U.S., rather than the city of Boston or its Red Sox fan base.

“I thought we’d moved past this a long time ago,” Jones said. “But obviously with what’s going on in the real world, things like this, people are outraged and are speaking up at an alarming rate. It’s unfortunate that I had to be involved with it.”

Jones received a personal apology from Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy on behalf of the organization.

The All-Star said it was not his intent to flood attention on what happened to him, but felt “it was just the right time” to speak out.

Kennedy said 34 people were ejected for various reasons Monday night and reiterated the team’s “zero tolerance” policy for such incidents. He also said there would be extra security around the outfield Tuesday night.

“I’m a grown man with a family to raise. So I’m not just gonna let nobody sit there and berate me,” Jones said.

“Where I come from if you say things

like that, you put on the gloves and you go after it. Obviously in the real world you can’t do that, especially in my field.”

Kennedy said that 10 to 15 people usually are ejected from Fenway any given night, calling the 34 ejected Monday usually high. Along with the fan ejected for throwing the peanuts, a second fan was ejected for using foul language toward a player. But the team doesn’t know whether the fan used the bad language toward Jones.

Kennedy and manager John Farrell separately met with Red Sox players Tuesday and said the players said they’d experienced similar incidents in both Fenway and around the league.

“I think one person hears an inappropriate remark or slur, that’s one person too many,” Kennedy said.

Boston’s professional teams – like the city’s neighborhoods – had different reactions to the civil rights movement and the integration of professional sports.

While the Celtics and Bruins broke barriers in pro basketball and hockey, the Red Sox were the last Major League Baseball team to field a black player.

In the 1980s, the Red Sox also dealt with an incident during spring training in Florida in which an Elks Lodge was giving passes to only white players.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – His name is Patch, a horse with one eye, and he’ll be running in the Kentucky Derby.

How he lost the eye is a mystery.

“No one really knows,” trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Pletcher has two other horses going in the first leg of the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs – Always Dreaming and Tapwrit. But if Patch comes up big, he’ll be the first Derby winner with one eye.

As it turns out, Patch is not the first visually impaired colt to run for Pletcher at the Derby. In 2004, Pollard’s Vision finished 17th. Pollard’s Vision had sight in only one eye when Pletcher bought him as a 2-year-old. It didn’t prevent him from becoming a multiple stakes winner of more than $1.4 million.

Patch has adjusted to a limited field of vision. But the circumstances surrounding his condition are murky.

“We came in one morning and his eye was a little bit swollen, and he was tearing heavily,” Pletcher said.

There was no evidence of additional trauma, suggesting the colt had fallen or run into an object. Aggressive treatment failed and the eye was removed.

“Everyone is stumped as to exactly what happened,” Pletcher said.

Once Patch recovered, Pletcher wondered how he would respond. The horse already had started training. It was never an issue.

“We thought there might be a period where he needed to adjust, that he would carry himself a little differently,” Pletcher said. “Actually, he showed no ill effects from it at all.”

Patch has one win in three starts.

He earned his way into this race with a second-place finish in the Louisiana Derby.

Patch figures to be a long shot Saturday, but already he has a following among racing fans and on social media.

“I kind of anticipated Patch would become pretty popular,” Pletcher said.

“It’s an intriguing story and he’s a really, really cool horse to be around.

He’s very laid-back, very professional, very straightforward to train.”

Chilled salads make party prep easy

In summer, a party can erupt any time of the day. Whether you’re serving a casual outdoor picnic or an elegant seated affair, we’ll help you throw together a stress-free menu in no time.

A chilled salad is a no-brainer first course for a summer lunch, and The Culinary Institute of America’s Avocado and Crab Salad and Chilled Watermelon Salad are the best of the bunch. Like most salads, all the components can be prepared ahead of time (even the avocado), and served on a platter for a buffet or family-style meal, or plated individually for a sitdown lunch.

Seafood and shellfish may seem daunting to prepare ahead of time, since the importance of their freshness so deeply is ingrained in our minds. And for good reason, since fresh fish can spoil easily.

However, CIA Chef Bruce Mattel said, “Popular shellfish items such as shrimp, crab and lobster can be prepared and served successfully if cooked right and especially if served chilled, which ensures success and protects product quality.” Just be sure to keep your cooked items as cold as possible during storage and serving.

Although the summer is a great time to buy fresh crabs (or catch them, if you’re lucky enough to live on the coast), there are many high-quality lump crabmeats on the market that can help cut your prep time.

Take a few minutes to carefully pick through the meat and remove small shell pieces, which can be done the day before your party. Refrigerate the meat in a bowl or dish set over an ice bath to help keep it as fresh as possible.

Avocado strikes fear in the hearts of party planners around the world.

Sure, it’s delicious and creamy, but we all know what happens mere minutes after slicing.

Even though a browned avocado still tastes fine, it’s not what we had in mind for our beautiful lunch spread.

But we’ve got a trick that will change how you feel about avocado forever.

Browning occurs when the avocado is exposed to oxygen, which degrades the color and texture of the fruit. An easy way to slow oxidation is to submerge your diced avocado in a bath of ice cold water diluted with lemon or lime juice (about 1 tablespoon per 2 cups of water will do the trick). The water and acid from the juice will

help preserve the avocado’s color and texture.

Of course, extended soaking will soften the avocado, so it’s best to prep this the morning of the party rather than the night before. This trick also works for guacamole. Make your dip, spread it in your bowl, and pour in enough cold water to cover. Just pour it off and mix up the dip before serving.

Other fruits, like watermelon, hold up well when cut and refrigerated.

They can be prepared the day before (in fact, our entire Watermelon Salad can be made a day ahead. Just add the herbs right before serving, so they don’t brown). Raw vegetables often are great make-ahead items, but can dry out and wilt if not stored properly.

Items like chopped onions, sliced radishes, and fresh chilies should be wrapped in a damp paper towel, then sealed in a zip-top bag. This will help keep them crisp and vibrant – just like your party.

Avocado and Crab Salad Servings: 8 Start to finish: 25 minutes

1 mango, peeled and roughly chopped 4 tablespoons lime juice, divided use 1/2 yellow onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice 1 teaspoon minced garlic 2 scallions, thinly sliced on the bias 1 tablespoon minced jalapeño 2 avocados, cut into 1/4-inch dice 10 ounces lump crabmeat 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 radishes, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons coarsely chopped cilantro Microgreens as needed for garnish (optional) Rice crisps or crackers, for serving (optional) In a blender, combine the mango and 1 tablespoon of the lime juice and purée until smooth. Place in a covered container and refrigerate until needed.

In a bowl, combine the onion, garlic, scallions, jalapeño, avocado, remaining lime juice, crabmeat, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.

Layer the radishes on a serving platter (or, if serving individually, divide among 8 salad plates). Top with the crabmeat mixture and garnish with cilantro and microgreens, if using.

Serve with the reserved mango mixture and rice crisps or crackers, if desired.

8 cups sliced romaine lettuce hearts 1 cup halved or quartered cherry tomatoes 1/2 cup sliced pitted kalamata or other Greek olives 1/3 pound crumbled feta cheese Position your oven rack about 6 inches away from the heat source, and preheat the broiler.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray, or lightly oil the foil. Brush both sides of the steak with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Broil the steak for about 4 or 5 minutes, until nicely browned on top, and then turn it and broil for 4 more minutes. Remove from the oven and let the meat rest on a cutting board for 10 minutes.

While the meat is broiling, cook the green beans. Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans, cook for 3 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold water to cool, and drain again.

Make the dressing: In a container, combine 1/3 cup olive oil, the vinegar, onion, oregano, mustard, garlic, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes (if using). Shake well to combine.

Thinly slice the steak on the diagonal across the grain.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and half of the olives and feta. Shake the dressing once more to combine, and pour over about 1/4 of the dressing. Toss the salad. Transfer to a large, shallow serving bowl and lay slices of the steak across the top of the salad. Pour some more dressing over the salad, reserving some to pass on the side for those who want additional dressing. Sprinkle the rest of the olives and feta over the top.

Quite often, I think a simple Greek salad is perfect as is, no adornments needed. But you may notice in many eateries, from diners to higher-end restaurants, you often get a choice of added protein, usually chicken, shrimp or steak.

And it’s true, that extra protein does make a salad feel more like a fully rounded meal.

A few slices of pink, perfectly cooked steak draped across a colorful bowl of Greek salad make a lunch or dinner that knows no season, but that feels particularly nice as the weather warms up. You can serve it up on a big platter or on individual plates.

If you have any kind of leftover steak in the fridge, slice that right up; this is the perfect way to use up those few pieces that aren’t quite enough for a meal on their own.

The Alpha Rho Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society welcomed 22 new members this spring at Kish­ waukee College.

The new members were inducted during a candle­lighting ceremony held in Jenkins Auditorium at the college on March 28.

The ceremony was presided over by the current officers of the Alpha Rho Eta chapter: Gabbie Cultra, Earlville, president; Justin Otte, Genoa, vice president; Andrew Kozinski, DeKalb, recording officer; Jair Mahali Grana­ dos Ramirez, Oregon, public relations officer; and Jashawna Robinson, DeKalb, hallmark officer. The Kish­ waukee College chapter faculty advis­ er is Allison von Ende.

During the ceremony, inductees and their families and friends were welcomed to the college by Laurie Borowicz, president of Kishwaukee College. Attendees enjoyed a guitar performance by Eric Schroeder, music instructor at the college. The keynote speaker was Laura Chiavini, creative communications specialist and former faculty adviser for the Alpha Rho Eta chapter at Kishwaukee College.

After the ceremony, inductees, families and friends enjoyed light re­ freshments in the Kishwaukee College Conference Center Dining Room.

The Alpha Rho Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Kishwaukee College held its spring induction ceremony on March 28 on campus. lege campuses in all 50 states, Canada, and other countries around the world.

More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding, with about 135,000 students inducted annually.

The society offers opportunities for scholarships, intellectual enrichment, and personal development through programs based on the society’s hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

To be eligible for membership, a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of college­level course work and earn a grade­point average of 3.5 or higher on 4.0 scale. Students must

maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two­year college.

Michelle Rothmeyer, vice presi­ dent of Student Services, noted that Kishwaukee has welcomed home­ school students to campus for many years and that the college has seen an increase in the number of home­ school students enrolling recently.

“Last year, we held our first Homeschool Visit Day and it was a great success – over 50 people came to campus. We received such positive feedback from the families who attended,” she said in a news release. “I think what struck most families was the variety of options on a college campus that are offered with the same personal touch that is at the center of the homeschool ex­ perience. Students can take classes here to enhance their homeschool academics, as well as prepare for the university or workplace. We look forward to welcoming new and returning families to his year’s event.”

The Homeschool Visit Day begins with check­in from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and will include a welcome address by Laurie Borowicz, president of Kish­ waukee College; a presentation on dual­credit options; a student panel; and a campus tour. There also will be a Resource Fair with information on everything from financial aid to free tutoring.

Acupuncture may provide some relief for tennis elbow Dear Doctor: I have played tennis for many years, but have been unable to play over the last year because of tennis elbow.

Would acupuncture help?

Dear Reader: Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is a tendon inflammation at the elbow. You don’t have to play tennis to develop the condition, but the specific motion of hitting a ball with a tennis racket is, unfortunately, an effective way of doing so. There are many different types of treatment for tennis elbow, including anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, ultrasound, platelet-rich plasma injections and steroid injections.

As for acupuncture, a review of multiple studies published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine attempted to answer your question. One of the studies found significant pain relief with acupuncture compared with placebo. Overall, reduction of pain was 55.8 percent in the acupuncture group and 15 percent in the placebo group.

However, another study showed an immediate improvement of symptoms with acupuncture after two weeks, but no difference after two months compared to placebo. Lastly, a study comparing acupuncture to ultrasound therapy for tennis elbow found no difference between the two treatments.

Overall, the authors concluded that acupuncture was helpful for tennis elbow, but it did not have a sustained response, lasting only two to eight weeks.

A 2015 study combined results from six different studies. Two of the studies compared real acupuncture with sham acupuncture, which involves placing the nee-

dle in nontraditional acupuncture points at random. The authors found a benefit with standard acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture. Also, there were conflicting studies on whether acupuncture with electrical stimulation was beneficial or not.

One other review from 2002 showed acupuncture for tennis elbow did have immediate benefit, but the authors could not conclude a long-term benefit.

Now, I have to acknowledge I’ve been performing acupuncture for tennis elbow for the past 12 years and have seen the treatment has been beneficial for the majority of patients. I have treated these patients with nontraditional acupuncture points at the tendon insertion of the elbow and have used electrical stimulation. I also add traditional acupuncture points. It is difficult for me to assess how much of the benefit is from the acupuncture, how much is from physical therapy and how much is just the tincture of time.

The studies do appear to show pain relief, but I feel that acupuncture should be combined with physical therapy. The bottom line: Acupuncture is one of many therapies that can help the pain of tennis elbow.

Recently, her now-grown sons called me to “catch up.” During the conversation, they asked me if their mother and I had had an intimate relationship. I didn’t know what to say. It’s certainly not my story to tell, but I didn’t know how to respond to her sons without telling a blatant lie or giving an answer that would verify their suspicions. Dear Abby: I recently had a baby and gained 25 pounds. My husband and I decided to go on a post-baby diet, which includes cutting out carbs and sugar. Over the past month, he has lost about 15 pounds; I lost 8. The problem is, he is constantly talking about our diet.

He dictates everything we eat, although he refuses to cook. He also wants to know my exact weight to see how I’m doing. Abby, I’m too embarrassed to tell him my weight as I’m a few pounds heavier than he is. Why doesn’t he understand weighing me is very embarrassing? He constantly tells me he loves me and wants to help me live a healthy lifestyle.

West was tempted to make a takeout double over three spades, but the vulnerability was unfavorable. Note that five diamonds doubled goes down two, which would be fine at a different vulnerability.

Declarer must concede a trick to the spade ace, so has to eliminate his heart loser. The only way to do that is to take three club tricks. South wins the third trick with dummy’s heart ace, plays a club to his king (the honor from the shorter side first) and returns a club to dummy’s jack.

When that holds, declarer discards his last heart on the club ace and plays a trump.
