Philippines says Trump called Duterte to affirm alliance

The Associated Press MANILA, Philippines – U.S. President Donald Trump has called Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte and expressed Washington’s commitment to their treaty alliance and his interest in developing “a warm, working relationship,” a Filipino official said Sunday.

Presidential spokesman Ernie Abella said Trump mentioned he was looking forward to visiting the Philippines in November to attend an East Asia summit that Duterte will host with several world leaders and that Trump invited Duterte to visit the White House.

“The discussion that transpired between the presidents was warm, with President Trump expressing his understanding and appreciation of the challenges facing the Philippine president, especially on the matter of dangerous drugs,” Abella said in a statement.

A White House statement described late Saturday’s call as “very friendly” and said the U.S.-Philippine alliance “is now heading in a very positive direction.”

Trump’s chief of staff, Reince Priebus, said the friendlier ties are needed even with concerns about Duterte’s human rights record, which includes extrajudicial killings of

suspected drug dealers and users as part of the government’s drug war. Priebus cited the military threat of North Korea.

“The purpose of this call is all about North Korea,” Priebus told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “It doesn’t mean that human rights don’t matter.”

Abella’s remarks reflect the friendlier attitude Duterte has taken with Trump versus the antagonistic stance he had toward President Barack Obama, who he once asked to “go to hell” for criticizing the Philippine leader’s bloody anti-drug crackdown.

During Obama’s final months in office, the Philippine president moved to build closer economic ties with China and Russia while repeatedly threatening to end his nation’s longstanding military alliance with the U.S. Duterte’s apparent dislike for Obama began when the U.S. State Department expressed concern over his drug war – which has left thousands of suspects dead – and asked Philippine government officials to take steps to stop extrajudicial killings.

At one point Duterte suggested he may even move to abrogate a 2014 defense agreement that allows U.S. military access to five Philippine military camps.

He has walked back most of those threats but has proceeded with his efforts to align closer with China.

New DHS principal to focus on building trust, improving learning

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Becoming principal of DeKalb High School is a professional goal achieved for James Horne.

Now he’s eager to change the subject.

Horne, in his third year as assistant principal of academic planning at the high school, has seen two DHS principals let go in a little more than a year.

With the DeKalb School District 428 Board’s unanimous approval of Horne’s contract during a special meeting Thursday, he replaces Michele Albano, whose contract was not renewed by the board earlier this year. He said focus needs to shift from administrative problems to the school’s successes.

“What we have is a high school with teachers who are working very diligently to meet the needs of their students, and we have students making great gains, both in terms of academics and extracurriculars,” Horne said. “So what the conversation needs to turn to is less what’s happening with the administration and more to the great things that are happening in the building. If we change the conversation, then the image of DeKalb High School will change.”

Horne said that in his first 100 days, he plans to build trust with school staff and the community.

“To lead any organization, you need to first have trust,” Horne said. “Stepping out of the assistant principal role and into the principal role will make me more focused in my attempt to reach out to the members of the community that I have not had the pleasure of interacting with in the previous year.”

Other goals include improving curriculum instruction, implementing technology to improve student learning, supporting athletics and extracurricular activities, and connecting with students to extend learning outside the classroom.

Horne acknowledged that these goals might be affected by the state’s budget problems.

“The Illinois budget is always an issue. That’s nothing new,” he said.

Horne’s salary was set at $134,670.91, which was based off the salaries of high school principals of similar-sized districts that also are members of the Large Unit District Association, District 428 Superintendent Brad Hawk said.

“What has happened in many districts is we use each other to benchmark salaries, because [those districts are] really our competition for administrative

positions,” Hawk said.

Horne’s contract also makes him eligible for a one-time bonus pending a positive evaluation of his performance.

He was the only in-school candidate of the 19 people interviewed for the job, board President Victoria Newport said.

The first part of the hiring process occurred in mid-April, when Horne said he met with several interview committees comprised of faculty, school administrators and parents. The groups focused on Horne’s qualifications in leading the community, leading curriculum instruction and leading student services.

The second part of the search was an estimated 90-minute meeting with the board, Horne said.

The 38-year-old earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and English at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, his master’s in curriculum and instruction and educational leadership at Northern Illinois University, and his principal endorsement at Concordia University in Chicago.

news@daily-chronicle.com Travis Dulzo, 12, knows that he is going to join the U.S. Air Force after he graduates from high school.

So the sixth-grader at Clinton Rosette Middle School became a cadet member of the Civil Air Patrol, where he is learning important military and aerospace skills that he hopes will put him ahead of his peers when he enters basic training in a few years.

And although he doesn’t want to become a pilot, Travis said he is excited to be a member of group’s ground team.

“My dad is in the Air Force, and he encouraged me to join CAP, and I really like it,” he said. “I like learning about the military and how to be a part of the ground team. We’ve learned how to put out a fire in case of a natural disaster. I plan to stay with CAP until I’m 17 and go into the Air Force.”

The DeKalb squadron of the Civil Air Patrol formed in January, and now the organization, which is a noncombatant auxiliary unit of the U.S. Air Force, is hoping to recruit new members from the area. The group held an informational open house at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport on Saturday afternoon.

The Civil Air Patrol, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, provides emergency air and ground services to assist local police departments, sheriff’s offices or the military. All members are volunteers, and they use airplanes provided by the Air Force.

There currently are six cadets between the ages of 12 and 21, as well as eight senior members, who are adults older than age 21, enrolled in the DeKalb squadron.

All the members are a part of the ground team, which can assist pilots on missions. The DeKalb squadron meets every Friday night at the DeKalb airport.

There are no airplanes housed at the DeKalb airport because there are no member pilots yet. But Steve We-

ber, acting commander of the DeKalb composite squadron, is hoping to change that. He said that a few pilots from DeKalb’s Experimental Aviation Association stopped by Saturday to inquire about joining CAP. “If something happens in Northern Illinois, like a natural disaster or an Amber or Silver Alert, we could be called by the state or local police or National Weather Service to help.

We can look at things from the air and cover a lot of area,” Weber said.

The three main missions of the CAP program are aerospace education, the cadet program and emergency services. The cadet program, of which Travis is a member, works with middle and high school students on military customs and courtesies, core values, leadership skills and aerospace education.

Weber, who has been involved with CAP for 40 years, said the best part of the organization is working with the cadets. Although cadets are not re-

quired to join the military, he said the program still can benefit all students.

“I like the idea of shaping young people, and help them focus and become leaders instead of followers,” he said.

Patrick Kozlowski, a former cadet with a squadron in the LaSalle-Peru area, now works with the DeKalb squadron’s cadets. The 20-year-old Northern Illinois University junior said his experience as a cadet helped him when he joined the Army Reserves.

“I especially enjoy helping new cadets build skills to become professional, productive adults,” Kozlowski said.

“This gives young people structure and builds discipline, leadership and public speaking skills. Those are all plusses of being in the program, and it’s definitely helped me. Not a lot of people know about this program, and we’re hoping that changes.”

Lori and John Tolliver of DeKalb became members of CAP with their

17-year-old daughter, who is planning on joining the Air Force after she graduates from DeKalb High School in December.

“We wanted to join to support her efforts, but we found that this program can benefit our careers, and we’ll continue our involvement after she moves on because this appeals to our own personal goals,” Lori Tolliver said. “This program gives the cadets a whole new level of confidence. It’s a safe environment for them to make mistakes and learn from them.”

John Tolliver said he’s really enjoyed all the training that CAP provides its members.

“We’ve gotten training in emergency management, and this is preparing my daughter for her next phase in life,” he said. “It will be nice to get some pilots here, and then we can get a CAP plane and do missions out of the DeKalb airport.”

Famed Houston lawyer Richard Haynes dies at 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – Houston lawyer Richard “Racehorse” Haynes, famed for his flamboyant but successful trial defenses of millionaire and billionaire clients in some of Texas’ most notorious murder cases, has died at age 90.

Haynes died early Friday at his home surrounded by family in the East Texas town of Trinity after years of declin- Richard ing health, said family ‘Racehorse’ spokesman Chris Triti- Haynes co, a Houston criminal defense lawyer Haynes once mentored.

Initial fame came when Haynes defended wealthy Houston plastic surgeon John Hill at trial over the 1969 slaying of Hill’s socialite wife, Joan Robinson Hill, whom investigators said died after eating an eclair secretly laced with E. coli bacteria.

The 1971 trial ended in a hung jury – but Hill was gunned down in the driveway of his mansion before he could be retried. The case was the subject of Thomas Thompson’s best-selling book, “Blood and Money,” which later was made into the 1981 film “Murder in Texas” starring Sam Elliott and Farrah Fawcett.

Haynes later represented Fort Worth oilman T. Cullen Davis, the first billionaire to be indicted for murder in the U.S. Davis was accused of opening

fire inside his mansion in 1976, killing his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Andrea Wilborn, and his estranged wife’s boyfriend, Stan Farr. His estranged wife, Priscilla, and family friend, Gus Gavrel Jr., were wounded in shootings.

The first trial ended in a mistrial because of juror misconduct. The second ended in an acquittal in 1977.

Davis was later indicted on a capital murder solicitation charge, accused of trying to arrange a hit on his estranged wife and the judge in their divorce case. Haynes won an acquittal of Davis in that case, too.

On Friday, Davis recalled Haynes’ cross-examinations in his trials, how he never let up if dissatisfied with witness responses or a judge’s ruling.

“I was thinking about him yesterday,” Davis, now 83, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He wouldn’t give up even when the judge tried to get him to quit asking the question, and he finally would get the answer he wanted.”

Former prosecutor Jack Strickland tried the cases against Davis, with Haynes at the defense table.

“I remember how aggravated I was at him for two years running,” the Fort Worth lawyer told the Star-Telegram.

“He was a very formidable adversary.

He was a showman. Those were the days when lawyers had a little more latitude to mouth off and try their cases in the press.”

STATE Bills, suit target quarries taking demolition waste

SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers and environmentalists from parts of Illinois that rely on groundwater want tougher monitoring of porous rock quarries that are being “reclaimed” by filling them with construction waste, saying they want to regulate them to make sure drinking water doesn’t become contaminated with toxins.

On the other side are road builders, engineers and others in the construction business, who argue that Illinois has sufficient quarry regulations and additional testing would be too expensive.

The proposed rules appear stymied this spring. But Attorney General Lisa Madigan is in court, trying to force previously dismissed groundwater monitoring on the quarries. She argued in a state appellate court brief that testing underground aquifers is necessary to protect drinking water “from the ongoing threat posed by the placement of unchecked materials ... directly into the water table.”

Heavy rains bring flash floods, flood warnings to Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – Heavy rains moved across southern Illinois on Sunday prompting the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings for the area.

Cities including Carbondale, Mount Vernon and Carmi were affected.

At least two rivers reached or exceeded flood stage including the Little Wabash and Skillet Fork rivers. High waters also were reported along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. National Weather Service trained spotters in the Mount Vernon area reported seeing creeks and streams starting to come out of their banks.

The weather service issued flood and flash-flood warnings for areas south of and including Springfield and the Peoria metro area. Central Illinois and the Chicago area had flood watches in effect.

State officials warned people to use caution and to be prepared to act quickly.

Emily McAsey of Lockport, was shunted into a subcommittee for review last week, substantially weakening its chances for passage before the Legislature adjourns May 31. The Sierra Club and other key environmental groups support the plan.

Western Illinois University to implode former dorm July 1

MACOMB – Western Illinois University plans July 1 to implode a 20-story-high building that was once a women’s residence hall.

Higgins Hall opened in 1967 and hasn’t been used since May 2013. The McDonough County Voice reported that the Macomb university has partnered with a contractor and a wrecking company. They plan to implode the building at about 9 a.m.

He says Western had higher enrollment when Higgins Hall was built and the school doesn’t need as much housing as it once did.

URBANA – The bells at the University of Illinois are now silent as its tower undergoes more than $160,000 in repairs.

be dumped in spent rock quarries. Requirements that professionals examine the waste have been put in place in the past decade, but decades of unregulated dumping occurred before that.

McAsey’s and McDermed’s home, Will County, has nine quarries with EPA permits to handle demolition waste, with up to nine more that could be soon, said Brent Hassert, a former Republican lawmaker who lobbies for the county.

The Illinois EPA lists 34 EPA-permitted construction-debris quarries, but when The Associated Press asked the agency for the sites handling the most demolition waste, spokeswoman Kim Biggs said the top three are in Lyons, in Cook County; and two Kane County sites, in South Elgin and Bartlett. None is on the agency’s list. Biggs then said the list is incomplete and would be removed until it’s corrected.

Illinois has the most stringent rules for quarry reclamation in the nation, according to Dan Eichholz, president of the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers. The waste material must come from a site where previous land use has been determined and verified that it’s not part of a toxic-cleanup project. A professional engineer or geologist

must test the soil at the site and determine that contaminants do not exceed allowed levels. At the quarry, a detector is used to check for suspicious odors.

The professionals used in the screening process are hired by the landowner or hauler, Eichholz said, but “repercussions are severe” if they don’t comply.

And the receiving site can reject any dump truck arriving with waste.

“Any load that’s suspicious has to be rejected,” Eichholz said. “These folks, it’s their property. They have plenty of motivation to make sure no contaminated material comes in.”

Environment Committee Chairman Dan Beiser, an Alton Democrat, said he sent McAsey’s bill to subcommittee to await Madigan’s legal action. Beiser has his own legislation – which was approved by the House and is awaiting Senate action – that would release from permitting requirements a quarry-waste operator who transfers part of a quarry-disposal site to someone else.

Eichholz said groundwater monitoring would be cost-prohibitive. “It’s not a high-dollar type of business and the whole point was, it’s a sustainable way to bringing material back to where it originated” and save the higher cost of landfill burial, Eichholz said.

The goal is to resume the Altgeld Chimes’ noontime concerts by next fall, but it isn’t clear when, if ever, they’ll be open to public visitors again, The Champaign News-Gazette reported.

A safety inspection last October after the retirement of longtime chimesmaster Sue Wood led the campus to suspend the popular public tours. About 2,000 people visit the bells each year for daily concerts at 12:45 p.m.

The chimes were shut down completely March 17 for repairs after more problems were discovered.

Officials say public tours aren’t likely to resume until a much larger renovation of Altgeld is complete. The $90 million project is several years away.

The nearly 100-year-old bell tower is accessible from the third floor of Altgeld Hall.

A steep staircase leads up to the playing room, a small attic area filled mostly by the seven-foot chimes stand, a practice chimes stand and a giant wooden keyboard.

Visitors have crowded into the playing room for years to watch Wood and others pump the chimes stand’s wooden levers, which connect to cables that ring clappers in the 15 bells. Visitors would climb a short staircase to the outdoor roof above the

playing room and then climb another 35foot caged ladder to the bell platform.

“We let the world go up there and not think another thing about it,” Wood said.

“Who knew any better? It had always been done.”

Historic site to host baseball games by 1860s rules

HARTFORD – A state historic site is hosting a day of baseball next month when games will be played by 1860s rules.

The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford will host the games 10 a.m. on May 6.

Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the free event.

In the 1860s, baseball was pitched underhand and the distance from the pitcher to home base was 45 feet, not 60 feet, 6 inches as it is today.

The competitors will be the Vandalia Old Capitals, Springfield Long Nines, Alton Baseball Club and the Belleville Stags.

William Clark arrived at the site that became Camp River Dubois in December 1803. That spring, they made preparations for the expedition, which formally began the next year.

Lawmakers seal deal on $1T plan government-wide funding bill

WASHINGTON – Top Capitol Hill negotiators reached a hard-won agreement on a huge $1 trillion-plus spending bill that would fund the day-to-day operations of virtually every federal agency through September, aides said Sunday night. Details of the agreement were expected to be made public Sunday night, said aides to lawmakers involved in weeks of negotiations.

The House and Senate had until midnight Friday to pass a measure to avert a government shutdown.

The catchall spending bill would be the first major piece of bipartisan legislation to advance during President Donald Trump’s short tenure in the White House. It denies Trump a win on his oft-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but gives him a $15 billion down payment on his request to strengthen the military.

It also rejects White House budget director Mick Mulvaney’s proposals to cut popular programs such as funding medical research and community development grants and adds $1.5 billion for border security measures such as additional detention beds.

Most of the core decisions about agency budgets had been worked out, but unrelated policy issues – such as a Democratic request to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico with its Medicaid burden – were among the final holdups.

The aides required anonymity because they were not allowed to speak about the agreement by name.

Democrats have denied Trump a big-picture win on obtaining an initial down payment for his oft-promised border wall with Mexico,

while anti-abortion lawmakers didn’t even attempt to use the must-pass measure to try to cut off federal money for Planned Parenthood.

Details were being closely held ahead of an agreement, but Trump and Capitol Hill defense hawks procured a $15 billion infusion of cash for Pentagon readiness and won funding for other border security accounts, such as detention beds for people entering the country illegally.

Democrats praised a $2 billion funding increase for the National Institutes of Health – rejecting the steep cuts proposed by Trump – as well as additional funding to combat opioid abuse, fund Pell Grants for summer school and additional transit funding. A provision extending health care for 22,000 retired Appalachian coal miners and their families was on track to provide permanent health benefits, a priority of Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other Appalachia region lawmakers.

Democratic votes will be needed to pass the measure, so even though Republicans control both the White House and Congress, Democrats have been actively involved in the talks, which appear headed to produce a lowest-common-denominator measure that won’t look too much different than the deal that could have been struck on President Barack Obama’s watch last year.

Republicans had pressed for policy wins with so-called riders related to other abortion-related issues and blocking environmental regulations such as Obama’s sweeping expansion of the Clean Water Act. They also hoped to chuck new financial rules. But Democrats pushed back and were hopeful that the measure would not contain many items they deemed “poison pills.”

Politics a threat to world economy The global economy is gathering momentum, the International Monetary Fund has declared. That’s probably correct and undeniably encouraging, but there’s an ominous discord between this economic expansion and what’s euphemistically called “political uncertainty” – that is, the stresses caused by surging anti-trade, anti-market, anti-immigrant populism.

This “uncertainty” could be the prelude to some seriously bad policies, enough to derail one or more leading economies and stall the global expansion. And there’s another danger, less obvious but no less important: the prospect of chronic underperformance.

Even if the new politics doesn’t bring the ceiling down, it threatens to block the longer-term policies that would promote growth.

The current expansion is steady but unspectacular. The IMF’s new forecasts say global output will rise by between 3 percent and 4 percent this year and next – slightly better than in 2016. So far, investors haven’t taken fright over President Donald Trump’s anti-market rhetoric, or the implications of Brexit for the U.K. and the European Union, or any of the other new sources of global instability. That could change in an instant, of course.

Yet even if all goes well, there’s a problem. Advanced and emerging economies are settling into a pattern of growth that’s disappointing by historical standards. This shortfall means persistent poverty, diminished opportunities and stagnant incomes for hundreds of millions of people. It helps explain the current state of politics.

This longer-term slowdown is starting to look permanent.

advanced economies – under pressure from demographic trends, fewer breakthrough innovations and other forces.

Then came the crash. Roughly a decade later, economies still haven’t shaken it off. Lenders and investors are more cautious; governments are more heavily indebted; and central banks are still wrestling with unconventional monetary policy.

Smart economic policy can still help increase long-term growth – but it requires deliberate intelligent action of the kind that the new politics makes far more difficult.

There are no quick fixes.

Promote innovation. Add to human capital by improving schools and widening access to higher education. Create programs that help workers relocate across regions and industries. Build well-chosen infrastructure. Encourage competition. All these things take years to yield benefits. Patience is the watchword – and populism is, above all, impatient.

One more thing. Persistent tepid growth is especially difficult for central banks, because it implies correspondingly low interest rates. In the U.S., the normal interest rate – the one expected to prevail at full employment – used to be roughly 4 percent. Today, it might be 2 percent or less.

In the future, either central banks will have to resort to unconventional measures more often or fiscal policy will have to shoulder more of the burden of managing aggregate demand.

In either case, economies will have greater need of competent policy makers, trusted by voters and insulated from the turbulence of daily politics.

It’s good that the global economy is gathering momentum.

But with politics this broken, don’t expect miracles.

That includes several from the Lone Star State, whose constituents would be adversely affected by a massive building project that would confiscate their land, impede their travel and ultimately, do little to deter migrants.

As Dennis Nixon, one of Trump’s top fundraisers in Texas, told The Wall Street Journal, “To me, it’s a silly idea that has not been well thought out.”

Try telling that to the millions of Trump voters who are still convinced that a wall will restore the natural order of things. If they don’t get it, their rage might be hard to contain.

A college’s complicity is something to be investigated seriously “They just didn’t listen.” So said one gymnast allegedly molested by Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics doctor at the center of a sexual abuse scandal.

Dr. Nassar also worked at Michigan State University – where multiple female athletes complained to officials about his so-called treatment, only to have the school shamelessly and shamefully ignore them.

USA Gymnastics has borne the brunt of the blame for Dr. Nassar’s alleged exploits.

But, as reporting by The Post’s Will Hobson and the Lansing State Journal reveals, Michigan State shares responsibility for letting an alleged abuser reportedly carry on a decades-long criminal career.

When athletes there told coaches and administrators that Dr. Nassar had massaged their buttocks and inserted his fingers, without gloves, into their vaginas, the officials told them they were misinterpreting the work of a medical superstar.

A university Title IX investigation in 2014 cleared Dr. Nassar of wrongdoing.

Dr. Nassar worked with aspiring Olympians across the country, and a nationwide network of coaches and officials apparently let their athletes down again and again.

But that bigger story should not obscure the appalling series of events that played out on Michigan State’s campus, for which the school has no excuse.

Authorities say Dr. Nassar was brazen in his abuse, to the point where, as FBI agents discovered during their investigation, he allegedly recorded video of himself groping underage girls in a pool.

Michigan State is undergoing internal reviews to figure out what went so terribly wrong on its watch.

That’s important, but equally important are structural reforms at Michigan State and colleges across the country to hold abusers accountable and prevent abuse from occurring in the first place.

Michigan State’s shortcomings underscore the importance of the Education Department’s recent efforts to more carefully enforce Title IX, which governs how schools address

sexual violence.

Troublingly, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos would not commit to continuing those efforts in her confirmation hearing.

“I have been told it is virtually impossible to stop a determined sexual predator and pedophile, that they will go to incomprehensible lengths to keep what they do in the shadows,” Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon said at a meeting of trustees this month.

But Dr. Nassar was not in the shadows. He and his behavior were on full display, for years, waiting for administrators to take action. They chose not to listen, and they chose not to see.

“Build that wall!”

That was one of the more popular rallying cries at then-candidate Donald Trump’s campaign events and was perhaps uttered more frequently than the incendiary “Lock her up!” – a reference to imprisoning Trump’s rival, Hillary Clinton. And the phrase has lived on.

At athletic events, academic competitions and other nonpolitical gatherings, Trump’s xenophobic supporters, adults and children, sometimes yell, “Build that wall!” as a belligerent taunt to those whose skin and accents are a bit different from their own.

It serves as an all-purpose unifier – a slogan, if you will – for the disparate threads of Trumpism.

If they didn’t count on any of the other promises made by a blustering narcissist who insisted he could turn rainy skies blue, Trump’s supporters, it turns out, are counting on that wall. He could lose the adoration of his base if he fails to build an imposing barrier on the nation’s southern border.

But, like so many of the president’s promises, this one is running into a, er, wall of reality. Many members of Congress, including conservatives, are opposed to wasting billions on the president’s vanity

Learn about Sycamore woman’s travels at museum brown bag DAILY CHRONICLE Discover how far a young wife and mother will go to find adventure as Clint Cargile shares the amazing journey of Georgia Townsend Yates at the Sycamore History Museum’s brown bag lunch on Thursday.

He will share research connected to his new book, “In Search of a Fair Wind: The Sea Letters of Georgia Townsend Yates, 1891-1892.”

In 1891, 24-year-old Georgia Townsend Yates packed up her infant daughter and left her affluent life in Sycamore to journey halfway around the world with her husband.

Based on her letters home, Clint brings this story to life. During his presentation, he will put the story in a historical context and share some

entertaining thoughts and descriptions written by Georgia.

“We are delighted to have Clint present at our May Brown Bag lunch.

His research fits in perfectly with our new exhibit,” museum director Michelle Donahoe said in a news release. “The fact that Yates’ relatives shared some of their heirlooms to display in our exhibit, ‘Adventures To and From Sycamore,’ helps people connect to this unique story.”

“The steamer trunk used on the ship, silver that was given as wedding presents, and family photos are just a few of the items people can see during their visit,” she said in the release.

“This talk is also on the day of Give DeKalb County, and provides a great opportunity for SHM to show

how interesting local history can be for people of all ages. Donations during Give DeKalb County will go to support SHM’s award-winning exhibits, programs, and collection,” Donahoe said in the release.

NICE Center to host 5K DAILY CHRONICLE

NICE Food and Clothing Center, which has been serving families in southwest DeKalb County and southeast Lee County for 29 years, will hold its 15th annual 5K walk on Sunday.

Fifteen member churches will participate in the event along with individuals, families and groups. A $20 registration fee is recommended for individuals or a family who wants to walk. T-shirts will be given to all who have donated the registration fee.

All proceeds go to the center that is operated by volunteers.

Registration will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. in the Indian Creek High School cafeteria in Shabbona. Step-off will be at 1:30 p.m. from the high school parking lot.

In only two seasons with NIU, Golladay leaves the school sixth all-time with 160 receptions, fifth with 2,285 receiving yards and tied for eighth with 18 touchdown catches. He is the only player in NIU history with back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

He put up those numbers with a parade of different quarterbacks after starter Drew Hare and backup Anthony Maddie went down for the season with injuries.

“I can’t control nothing that’s going on in the quarterback room,” Golladay said. “I’ve just got to make it easier for the quarterback, and that’s getting open.

So if we have a younger quarterback back there, I put more pressure on myself to make sure I get open. I want to make it easier for him, and that’s all I pretty much worked on. And that’s all our receiver coach told the receiver room, too. We have a younger quarterback back there. We have to make it that

much easier for him, and that’s pretty much what I focused on.”

Golladay was the fourth Huskie to be taken in the first three rounds of the draft since 2005 – running back Garrett Wolfe went to the Bears in the third round, 93rd overall, in 2007, and linebacker Larry English and defensive back Jimmie Ward were first-round picks in 2009 by the Chargers and in 2014 by the 49ers, respectively.

The selection came after Golladay was under-recruited out of St. Rita. He didn’t have an NCAA Division I offer and ended up at North Dakota. He transferred to NIU, and now he’s off to the Lions.

“I was really just a guy who fell under the radar, really,” Golladay said. “I didn’t get no offers out of high school. I got one offer, and that was North Dakota, and I just had that drive to play football. I’ve been playing all my life. Even though I’m from a big city like Chica-

go, I knew I wanted to play football, so I took that path to North Dakota, and I did what I had to do pretty much.

“I played my true freshman year. I played my sophomore year, and stuff pretty much happened. The coaches ended up getting fired, so I made my own highlight tape. I gathered all my film, made my own highlight tape and sent it to my coach, Todd Kuska at St. Rita, and just told him to do me a huge favor, and that was to just send my tape out to the college coaches that were coming in.

And he jumped right on it, man. I feel like it only took him a week, maybe two.

“I sat there and talked to my family, and they were going to have my back through thick and thin, man. I made that decision. I was blessed. I stood out that 2014 season, 2015, 2016 just hit the ground running.”

The Lions visit the Bears on Nov. 19.

Offensive lineman Lincoln Howard signed Sunday with the Kansas City Chiefs, while on Saturday, defensive tackle Corey Thomas signed with the

Atlanta Falcons, returner and receiver Argeros Turner and running back Joel Bouagnon signed with the Bears, defensive lineman Ladell Fleming signed with the Browns and offensive lineman Levon Myers signed with the Dallas Cowboys.

DeKalb’s Ryan Glasgow, who attended Marmion Academy before playing at the University of Michigan, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals early in the fourth round.

Fleming earned his way into the starting lineup as a senior, but played 47

career games. He finished 2016 with 40 tackles. Myers started 26 games between the 2015 and 2016 seasons, and played 46 for his career. We was second team allMAC in 2016.

Howard made 10 starts between his senior and junior years and played in every game for three years. He started four games at right guard in 2016. Thomas played in 11 games in 2015 before going down with an injury.

Turner was the 2015 MAC Special Teams Player of the Year and led the

NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision with 1,181 return yards. He averaged 103.5 all-purpose yards a game in 2016. Bouagnon leaves NIU 11th all-time in rushing yards with 2,911 and seventh with 31 touchdowns. He ran for 885 yards and eight scores in 2016.

Glasgow, whose older brother Graham was drafted by the Lions in 2016, was second team All-Big Ten for the Wolverines and was the team’s Defensive Lineman of the Year, finishing with 42 tackles, 9.5 for loss and four sacks.

Growing up in Chicago, Kenny Golladay said he just wanted the Bears to win.

That’s over now.

“Being from Chicago, you’re pretty much a home team guy, but it wasn’t just, ‘Definitely have to beat the Lions or have to beat the Green Bay Packers,’ ” said the former NIU receiver, who was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the NFL draft Friday night. “It was pretty much I just want the Bears to win, but that’s totally different now.”

Golladay was selected 97th overall by the Lions, who need to replace Anquan Boldin at receiver.

Golladay said the coaching staff already has talked to him about his chances of becoming the third receiver.

“Coach (Robert) Prince definitely talked to me about it, the challenge that’s ahead of it,” Golladay said at a news conference Friday night. “I’ve taken on many challenges, and I’m just ready to take on the next, just ready to put my best foot forward and go to work.”

Golladay said he doesn’t know too much about the Detroit offense but is excited about the chance to learn.

“I know Matthew Stafford is a good quarterback, and I’m just willing to learn more about the offense,” Golladay said. “I’m not too familiar with it, but I’m definitely ready to learn.”

In a video released by the Lions, Stafford said he was excited about the Golladay pick.

“It’s exciting to get guys that play on our side of the ball,” Stafford said. “He’s a big guy, I know. Ran a good 40 time for a big dude. ... Our coaches and front office told me about him, I watched some tape on him, excited to get to work with him.”

Barbs struggle in 11th straight defeat

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For three innings, it looked as if the DeKalb baseball team might have been able to put an end to its 10-game losing streak Saturday.

Fourteen runs and six errors later, and the Barbs had lost, 14-0, to Dixon, their 11th straight defeat.

“We came out pretty good the first couple innings,” DeKalb coach Dedric Wright said. “But we made some errors and went flat from there, couldn’t come back from there.”

DeKalb (6-15) has scored two runs in its past five games heading into today’s showdown with rival Sycamore.

On Saturday against the Dukes (14-5), the Barbs were no-hit until Matt Searls laid down a sixth-inning bunt. It was their only hit of the game, and after a steal and a wild pitch, Searls became the first and only Barb to reach third base.

Charles Roberts walked and got a steal to reach second in the third inning.

Noah Valin started for the Barbs and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. DeKalb committed one error in the first three innings, but had three in the fourth alone. Dixon needed only three hits to score its five runs in the inning. Valin fielded a bunt with a runner on first and no out, but first baseman Matt Howard dropped the throw. Two plays later, Valin dropped a towering infield pop-up on what, without the errors, would have been the second out of the inning.

“We’re just not making the basic plays,” Wright said. “We had a ball there on a bunt, Noah came up on it great, threw it over to first, and he just dropped it. We had an infield pop-up to the pitcher, and no one took control of that. We ended up dropping that, and it opened up the inning – they ended up scoring five that inning.

“Because we haven’t been hitting the ball lately, we can’t afford to just give runs away.”

Even with the Barbs struggling – the average margin of defeat during the current losing streak is 7.9 runs a game – Wright said the team is focused on a day-by-day approach.

We just have to start playing good baseball.”

By the numbers: Dixon had 10 hits in the game, its first extra-base hit a double by Tucker Cole in the seventh as part of a 2 for 3, three-run game for the leadoff hitter. Devrick Sayles added two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Dukes, and Ethan Apple added two hits.

Beyond the stats: DeKalb managed only four base runners in the game.

They said it: “We’re just not coming out and playing good baseball,” Wright said. “We’re struggling at the plate. We’re not fielding very well either.”

Up next: The Barbs head to the Sycamore Park District to take on the Spartans Monday at 4:30 p.m., while the Dukes host North Boone.

Six new NIU Hall of Famers DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois University announced six members of the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

The inductees are Dee Abrahamson (softball head coach, athletics administrator, NCAA secretary), Steve Azar (football), Mark Goodson (men’s gymnastics), Ed Kositzki (men’s soccer), Angela Lockett (women’s basketball) and Garrett Wolfe (football).

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place Oct. 6 at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington ballroom as part of NIU’s 111th Homecoming celebration. Complimentary tickets to the ceremony and cocktail reception will be made available later this summer.

Abrahamson is the winningest coach in the softball program’s history, going 416-286-5 from 1980 to 1994, including a trip to the College World Series in 1988. Abrahamson moved into athletics administration at NIU, serving in numerous posts from 1994 to 2011. In addition to her work at NIU, Abrahamson became the NCAA softball secretary-rules editor in 1996, a position she held until 2015.

Azar is the football program’s alltime leading scorer and the only player to earn all-conference honors four times. Azar, whose last season was in 2003, made 73 field goals and scored 370 points in his career.

Goodson was a four-time NCAA qualifier in the floor exercise and took 12th in 1977.

Kositzki was one of the most prolific scorers in NIU soccer history, and in 1971 became the second All-American in program history. He is the record holder for goals in a career (45) and season (27), as well as a single game (seven).

Lockett is eighth all time on the women’s basketball scoring list and helped NIU into the postseason in each of her four seasons. She also led NIU in rebounding for four years and is the third all-time leading rebounder for the program. She closed out her career by earning Mid-Continent Conference Tournament MVP honors in 1995, helping the Huskies reach the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years.

Wolfe is the all-time leading in rushing yards with 5,164 and rushing touchdowns with 52. He was drafted by the Bears in 2007 and played four years in the NFL.

Jazz flatten Clippers, win series

LOS ANGELES – Gordon Hayward scored 26 points and the Jazz eliminated the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday with a 104-91 victory, closing out the first-round series 4-3 to earn the franchise’s first postseason series victory since 2010.

George Hill and Derrick Favors added 17 points apiece for the Jazz in what proved to be the easiest game of the back-and-forth series.

The Jazz advanced to face top-seeded Golden State in the Western Conference semifinals. The Warriors swept Portland 4-0 and have been waiting since Wednesday to find out their next opponent.

Game 1 is Tuesday in Oakland.

The Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan had 24 points and 17 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the series. Jamal Crawford added 20 points off the bench.

Logano pulls away to win at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Joey Logano pulled away after a restart with about 20 laps to go to win the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway on Sunday.

Logano, who qualified fifth but had to start 37th after making a transmission change, grabbed the lead from Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski on an earlier restart when Keselowski had to make a defensive move to keep Kyle Busch from passing him on the inside.

Keselowski got stuck behind some slower cars on the restart, letting Logano pull away.

Logano then had to get around Kyle Larson and five others who stayed on the track when everyone else pitted with more than 20 laps remaining. He made quick

work of that challenge and pulled away while Keselowski and Denny Hamlin dueled for the second position.

Kisner-Brown, Blixt-Smith head to Zurich Classic playoff

AVONDALE, La. – Kevin Kisner chipped in for eagle on the 18th hole as darkness fell Sunday night at the Zurich Classic, lifting himself and teammate Scott Brown into a Monday playoff with Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith.

Kisner’s chip-in – which skipped on a wet green, hit the pin and dropped in from nearly 95 feet – forced the 23-year-old Smith to make a 1½-foot birdie putt to remain in contention for his first PGA Tour victory.

They were at 27-under par through four rounds at the TPC Louisiana in the PGA Tour’s first team event in 36 years.

Blixt, a Swede, and Smith, an Australian, haven’t bogeyed a hole yet, and appeared to have the victory wrapped up before Kisner’s chip-in, which whipped the diehard crowd around the final green into a frenzy while Kisner waved both arms in celebration.

Bottas beats Vettel in Russian Grand Prix for 1st Formula 1 win

SOCHI, Russia – Valtteri Bottas fended off hard-charging Sebastian Vettel and outshone Lewis Hamilton to claim his first Formula One win Sunday in the Russian Grand Prix.

Bottas started third but beat second-placed Kimi Raikkonen off the start and slipstreamed past Vettel’s Ferrari to lead at the end of the first straight.

The 27-year-old Finn joined Mercedes after last year’s champion, Nico Rosberg, surprisingly announced his retirement.

Bears pick DB, RB and OG to conclude draft

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – On the third and final day of the draft, the Bears made three picks to round out their 2017 draft class: defensive back/punt returner Eddie Jackson (Alabama), running back Tarik Cohen (North Carolina A&T) and offensive lineman Jordan Morgan (Kutztown).

Ryan Pace said Jackson was high enough on the team’s draft board that he made the move up five spots to No. 112 to make the pick.

“A player we had graded high on our board, obviously willing to move up for,” Pace said. “Plays free safety, also a very good punt returner, converted corner, very good instincts, very good ball skills. Something we need and something we’re excited about, so a good addition for us.”

Jackson comes to the NFL with medical questions after his senior season was cut short by a broken leg. However, Jackson – who is Alabama’s all-time leader in interception-return yards (he had nine career picks) – says he will be ready for

Bourbonnais. Pace said Jackson will be limited in rookie minicamp.

“I’m fine right now. I’m healthy, and I’ll be ready to go by training camp and everything like that,” he said. “From last year I mean, it was frustrating that I went out with an injury, but it’s something that I can’t control. I’m just ready to go in there

and work with the training staff for the Bears, and I know I’m going to be ready for training camp 100 percent, no limitations.”

Cohen has been a social media sensation for videos not only of his highlight reels, but also his ability to catch passes while making a backflip, something that came out of boredom one summer.

“We call him a joker back so really a good third-down back out of the backfield, can separate with his routes, really a dynamic player that dominated at that level,” Pace said.

“Really excited to add him, one of those guys who’s really fun to watch.”

Only 5-foot-6, Cohen was extremely productive in college and an explosive runner. He thinks his diminutive frame should benefit him behind the Bears’ O-line, where he has a skill set that complements the big, physical, downhill runner Jordan Howard well.

“I think [my size] will play a key role in helping me and benefiting me, because the linemen are going to be bigger, so it’s really going to be hard to see me behind my linemen and I

can use that to my advantage,” Cohen said.

After taking Division II tight end Adam Shaheen on Friday night, the Bears returned to the D-2 ranks to take Morgan.

They know Morgan well after coaching him at the Senior Bowl.

Morgan started 43 games at left tackle but projects as a guard in the NFL. His performance at the Senior Bowl helped seal Morgan’s status in the draft and with the Bears.

“Another small school player but I think that Senior Bowl experience really cemented it for us, the kind of player that he is, we’re excited about adding him to our offensive line,” Pace said.

Morgan was unfazed by the competition he faced at the Senior Bowl and is ready for the trenches in the NFL. “At the end of the day football is football no matter what division or school you’re from, and that’s why I felt like I almost, I wouldn’t say I went in with a chip on my shoulder, but I went in with a great level of confidence because I believed that I could get the job done,” he said.

DETROIT – April is in the books for Avisail Garcia, who ended his booming month quietly Sunday with a foul popup and strikeout before leaving with tightness in his left groin in the White Sox’s series-ending 7-3 loss to the Tigers on Sunday at Comerica Park.

Slick conditions on a damp, rainy 48-degree afternoon prompted manager Rick Renteria to pull his right fielder, and get a case filed for American League Player of the Month. The idea was to have Garcia ready for the first day of May when the Sox open a fourgame series Monday in Kansas City.

“It was a little tight,” Garcia said.

“They took me out for precautionary [reasons]. I can run, but not 100 percent.

That’s a smart decision. I don’t want to get worse.”

Garcia is a guy the Sox want to keep healthy. He finished April with an ALbest .368 average, five homers, 20 RBIs and ranked among the league leaders in several other categories. Mike Trout also is up there, as a Player of the Month candidate and the superstar center fielder figures to rate an edge but to be mentioned speaks volumes about the strides Garcia, 25, is making in his

bmiles@dailyherald.com BOSTON – In many ways, April was the coolest month for the Cubs.

After a season-opening road trip, they returned home to Wrigley Field for banner-raising and World Series ring ceremonies.

As nice as those events were, they also put the Cubs through the emotional wringer, as well.

They come home Monday night to begin May after a 10-day, nine-game road trip that ended with a Sunday night game at Fenway Park. The Red Sox broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with four runs to take the series with a 6-2 victory.

All in all, manager Joe Maddon says he’s happy with the start to the season.

“Pretty pleased, actually,” he said.

“It’s going to be a winning month regardless. It’s always nice to break with a winning month. We’ve had two pret-

ty difficult road trips. Even the first one, going to Houston (to end spring training), even though it didn’t matter, it was still being on the road. The week in St. Louis. There was just a lot of time spent away from home.

“Then we went home, nice (home) stand. I think we were 4-5. But it was an emotional week. And I’m really into attempting to understand emotional expenditures. I really believe that’s something we don’t think about enough. So I thought we got through that well.”

The Cubs are in first place despite not hitting on all cylinders in any aspect of their game yet. They also have to live with the memory of last year’s torrid 25-6 start.

“That’s fine,” Maddon said. “That’s really hard to do. You’d love to have that done, but who knows? We might have a 25-6 run in us at some point, too.

“But I’m really pleased and proud of our guys, how they’ve handled all of this.”

High doses of pain relievers carry risk stomach inflammation, ulcers and possibly severe bleeding.

Celecoxib (Celebrex) is a more selective NSAID and does not decrease prostaglandins in the stomach. This translates into less likelihood of creating ulcerations.

All NSAIDs also reduce prostaglandins in the kidneys, which can lead to kidney injury. This injury becomes worse in people who have a history of chronic kidney disease, who are older, or who have congestive heart failure or cirrhosis.

Lastly, the chronic use of high-dose NSAIDs has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks. Celecoxib may have a slightly greater risk of this than ibuprofen and naproxen, but a recent New England Journal of Medicine study looking at those who used NSAIDs chronically for arthritis found no difference in cardiovascular events between celecoxib and either ibuprofen or naproxen.

Of the drugs you listed, my feeling is that acetaminophen is the safest when used regularly. However, I would use acetaminophen at no higher doses than 4,000 mg a day and, if you were to use it regularly, I would recommend decreasing this amount to 2,000 to 3,000 mg a day.

The NSAIDs – ibuprofen, naproxen and celecoxib – are needed by some who have inflammatory arthritis, and they are good medications in the short-term. I would caution against consistent long-term use, especially at high doses and especially if you have any history of heart disease.

Dear Doctor: Which pain reliever is safer – acetaminophen, ibuprofen, celecoxib or naproxen? It seems as if they all carry some risks.

Dear Reader: Pain is a symptom to which we can all relate. It’s also an important indicator of possible injury within the body and should be acknowledged, not simply by taking medication, but also by understanding the cause of the pain. That said, one person’s pain is different than another’s, with some people needing greater pain relief.

So, if you need a medication for pain, what should you use? Let’s look first at acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen has been used since 1955; it is available in multiple products, works well for pain, and is for the most part safe. However, at high doses – specifically, above 4,000 milligrams a day, or eight tablets of Extra Strength Tylenol – the medication can cause liver damage, or even death, especially in those who are malnourished, drink alcohol in excess or consistently take more than 4,000 mg a day. Age also is a factor, as those 40 and older have a greater risk of liver failure and death after over-dosage.

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) has been used for pain since 1974. It is one of many medications classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). NSAIDs work by inhibiting formation of mediators of pain and inflammation, and they’re notably effective at decreasing inflammation in swollen joints related to arthritis.

Naproxen (Aleve) was first marketed in 1976 and works similarly to ibuprofen.

But it has a longer half-life, giving it a longer-lasting effect. Both ibuprofen and naproxen decrease the formation of prostaglandins in the stomach. These chemicals produced by the body have hormonelike effects, protecting the stomach lining from acidity. The decrease of prostaglandins can injure the stomach lining, leading to

In my classes, if we exclude playing far too quickly from the dummy at trick one, I see two errors more often than any others. They are related to answering partner’s takeout double and playing third hand high.

Let’s put them under the spotlight this week.

Look at the South hand in the diagram. West opens one diamond, North makes a takeout double, and East passes -- what should South do?

South can pass only when he has long and strong diamonds. So, a simple bid in a suit promises nothing; it has a range of 0-8 points. This South hand contains 9 points, so he must jump to two spades. Yes, this could be a 4-3 fit, but we cannot worry about that at the moment. A good partner will have four-card support.

Here, North, knowing his partner has 9-11 points, jumps to four spades.

How should South plan the play after West cashes two top diamonds and exits with a trump?

Declarer has three top losers: one heart and two diamonds. He must find the club queen to make his contract. When faced with a guess like this, leave it as late as possible.

First, draw the trumps. Then, play on hearts to learn that East holds the ace. Next, check the points. South is missing only 16, and West opened the bidding, but East has the heart ace. West must have the club queen, so finesse through him to get home safely.
