Solution to noisy toy problem All kids love their toys. They bring them joy on so many levels. They entertain and, of course, some toys help them learn.

Toys come in all shapes and sizes. Some are fluffy. Some are interactive. And some toys make super-loud NOISES. Hannah Jo has a collection of super-loud toys. These are the toys I would like to throw out (or donate, of course).

In my simple opinion, these toys should be banned.

Hannah Jo has a neighborhood friend named Jillian. Her mom and I joke about it all the time. As of matter of fact, she purposely gave Hannah Jo an annoying toy for her birthday. We have giggled about it, but deep down inside, I want to chuck it across the lawn (or donate it, of course.)

Numerous times I have been startled by strange noises from downstairs while lying in bed. Super-spooked, I tiptoe down, only to figure out it was some noisy toy that somehow turned on.

Now, that is frightening and a little disturbing. Maybe these toys know I can’t stand them, so they are out to haunt me.

Toys also can be dangerous. Just the thought of stepping on a Lego or block makes a parent wince. Although I found out stepping on a toy that you didn’t know made noise is

even more startling. I don’t know which is worse, the physical or mental effect.

I have been tempted to throw out some of these irritating toys (or donate them). However, I came up with a solution to my irritation.

I take the batteries out of the toys I can’t tolerate any longer.

When Hannah Jo goes to play with them I simply tell her that the battery ran out of juice, and we’ll have to go to the store to buy more.

Luckily for me, she has yet to remember that we have to buy more batteries while we’re at the store.

I think this is a win-win solution. Hannah Jo gets to play with her toy for a while. Then mama has earned her peace and quiet.

UK man dressed as gorilla crawls through London Marathon

LONDON – The London Marathon started five days ago, and Tom Harrison is nearly done.

It’s not that he’s a slow runner. It’s that he’s a slow crawler, particularly wearing his gorilla suit.

The man dubbed Mr. Gorilla is raising money for the Gorilla Organization – so far more than $28,500 has been pledged.

He’s hopeful of finishing the race Saturday, with his two sons awaiting him at the finish line. They will, naturally, be wearing gorilla suits.

He ran the marathon the conventional way last year to raise money for gorillas, but decided this year to try something harder, and potentially more lucrative.

He’s developed several different techniques, none of them pain-free. Kneepads brought little relief, and were ditched on the first day.

“It’s shoulders, hamstrings, glutes, quads, from the constant crouching,” he said. “We’re not really designed to do that.”

Animal-rights activists speak out against breeding operation at hearing

Some animal-rights advocates and neighbors are speaking out against a dog-breeding facility in Clare that has imported hundreds of puppies from out of state in violation of its special use permit.

A zoning officer is set to make a decision May 24 on a request from Christie Hardt and Robert DeCosta, owners of B & C Kennels, 6367 E. Clare Road, to allow an increase in the number of dogs they can keep on their property and the sale of imported puppies.

Hardt and DeCosta want the county’s permission to keep up to 100 puppies and 40 adult dogs. About 30 people attended a public hearing Thursday on the issue.

“If B & C gets permission to breed and broker even more dogs, that will be opening up opportunities for more breeders to come to DeKalb County,” Ida McCarthy of DeKalb said. “They have already violated their special use permit.”

B & C Kennels produces popular breeds, including French bulldogs, Yorkshire terriers and schnauzers, and offers more than 30 breeds and mixes.

But the facility also has drawn criticism from animal-rights groups, which call it a puppy mill operation.

B & C was placed on the Humane Society of the United States’ “Horrible Hundred” list of puppy mills in 2016.

The Humane Society noted that the business was fined for selling a puppy with parvovirus and dogs with brucellosis, both highly contagious viral diseases.

A-1 Puppies, a large-scale breeding facility in Morris Chapel, Tennessee, that breeds puppies for shipping to B & C, also has been accused by animal-rights groups of being a puppy mill, something the business’ supporters said is a loaded term.

Dog population exceeds limit

Hardt and DeCosta operated their business without a permit at first, but then received a warning letter from the county and applied for and received one from the county in 2010, officials said.

The special use permit allows a maximum of 40 dogs.

Hardt said she thought county officials knew she was importing up to 100 puppies a month, and she assumed the 40-dog limit only included her own dogs raised on site.

“The original permit was for 40 dogs.

It was clearly a misunderstanding on our part,” she said. “I never knew I was out of compliance. We have been importing at Day One; it was discussed, but apparently it wasn’t discussed in an official matter.”

Hardt said her business has continued to import 80 to 100 puppies a month since August, selling them to families and individuals from DeKalb County and other states who visit her kennel.

Marcellus Anderson, county assistant planner, said county staff contacted the owners after learning of the violation and informed them that they would need to apply for an amendment.

“Generally speaking, we don’t have a specific fine for someone violating a special use permit,” Anderson said. “If we find someone doing something not allowed in the ordinance, our typical stance would be to contact them and see

what we can do.”

Hardt said the kennel currently has 23 of its own dogs, including 11 breeding females and four breeding males. The state allows a maximum of 20 breeding females.

The dogs are bred every 10 months, producing litters of one to six puppies, which are then sold to individuals or families, Hardt said.

While several neighbors and employees spoke to the professionalism of the business, others argued against it, alleging the sale of sick dogs and use of puppy mills.

Supporters of the business said “puppy mill” is a loaded term and argued that people’s freedom to choose where to buy their pets should be protected.

Hardt said her facility cannot produce enough puppies to meet demand, so importing from out-of-state breeding facilities is necessary. She said shipments typically come in every other week, ranging from 30 to 85 puppies a shipment. Shipments via truck can be as large as 100 puppies, she said.

The puppies come from A-1 Puppies,

which is owned by Hardt’s cousin, Angela Shubert, who also testified about her facility during the hearing.

Shubert said her facility holds 600 adult dogs and 230 puppies and produces about 25 breeds. She said the facility employs five full-time and three parttime workers, and it is licensed and regulated through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Tennessee Health Department.

Ida McCarthy, Illinois director of the Companion Animal Protection Society, asked if an undercover video produced by the society at the Tennessee kennel could be played during the hearing, but DeKalb County Hearing Officer Dale Clark denied her request.

Kathy Mehalko of Winnebago County asked how Shubert would define a “puppy mill,” adding that in her opinion there is no way to responsibly breed 600 to 1,000 dogs.

Shubert said the term “puppy mill” is unfair because it leads people to believe that all breeders run inhumane operations.

Teen to be honored at Y awards dinner

SYCAMORE – Only a junior, Libby Swedberg already has made quite an impression at Sycamore High School.

Among the 17-year-old’s accolades – student council member, math team conference champion, co-president and treasurer of Interact Club, athletics just for fun, all while making the Honor Roll each semester.

It’s because of her work outside those walls, however, that she’ll be honored as YMCA Youth Leader on May 11 at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s annual awards dinner.

A voracious reader, she’s vice president of Robert Watts the Sycamore Public Library Advisory Group and has served as a summer reading program volunteer. She tutors and coordinates youth events. She’s rung bells for The Salvation Army.

As a tribute to her great-greatgreat-grandmother, who taught at Old North Grove School, the one-room schoolhouse on Brickville Road, Libby put 80-plus volunteer hours into restoring its exterior.

Even her mom gets caught admiring sometimes.

“These kids are under so much pressure as students, so it’s neat that this award is all about what she gives back to the community, on top of her school success,” Lori Swedberg said.

The award dinner’s featured speaker would be proud, too.

Robert Watts is a psychologist, author and former NFL player, who counts youth development among his greatest passions. It starts at home, he said in an interview Friday.

“Some parent, somewhere is doing the most important job on the planet,” he said. “They’ve taught this child responsibility, altruism, passion for their fellow man and society.

“Somebody has been a good model for this child. You can’t learn that on your own.”

Watts will be at Sycamore High School on May 10 to be interviewed

by Spartan TV and share a message of collaboration, giving back and overcoming challenges to better oneself.

“I’m pretty excited to hear that message,” Libby said.

Libby proposed scraping and painting the school, its garage and fence to the association.

Libby said a the ceremony where her older brothers, Jordan, 22, and Jeremy, 20, were named Eagle Scouts, inspired her to find her own way to give back.

“It blew my mind,” she said. “It was a combination of both what they were achieving and the impact it was having. When I realized why they were doing it, I’d already had an interest, but when I saw what came out of their service, that’s what really inspired me.”

“It just makes you feel good,” she said. “It’s a different feeling than getting good grades. It’s a different feeling – a better one.”

Fitting it all in takes practice, she said.

“With experience, I’ve gotten good at planning; it all comes down to time

management,” she said. “I’ll literally take out a notebook and write it down: I’ll study for an hour here, work on this project there.”

Steve Balster, assistant principal at Sycamore High, said he’s seen Libby’s attitude and volunteerism catch on.

“Part of the [awards dinner] celebration is for it to be contagious, for other students to see this and know about it,” he said. “Then it almost becomes a pay-it-forward sort of thing.”

Other honors to be given during the dinner are the Emerging Leader and Outstanding Community Leader awards.

LOCAL BRIEF 3-car crash in Sycamore damages 2 police cars

SYCAMORE – A three-car crash in Sycamore involving two Sycamore police cars resulted in at least one vehicle possibly being totaled but no injuries, according to a news release Sycamore police sent Friday.

Police said the crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Peace Road near Bethany Road. According to the release, 39-year old Nabor Garcia-Vazquez of DeKalb was southbound on Peace when his Ford Explorer hit a Sycamore police car that was involved in a traffic stop.

The collision pushed the squad car into the rear of another squad car that was also involved in the traffic stop, police said.

Sycamore Deputy Chief Jim Winters said both squad cars sustained heavy

damage, and one might be a total loss.

The squad car that sustained the worst damage and Garcia-Vazquez’s vehicle were both towed from the scene.

Winters said he was not sure of the condition of Garcia-Vazquez’s car.

“The main thing is that no one was injured,” Winters said.

Garcia-Vazquez was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, according to police records.

Winters said the incident is a good reminder for drivers to slow down and move over whenever they see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road.

“The law requires [vehicles] to slow down and move over to the left for their own safety and for the safety of the first responders on the scene,” Winters said.

SYCAMORE – Police are seeking information after several power tools were taken from a work van on Charles Street, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Vocal group places 2nd in competition

news@shawmedia.com DeKALB – It’s an achievement years in the making. Last weekend, DeKalb High School’s a cappella group, Enharmonic Fusion, was runner-up at International Championship of High School A Cappella in New York, capping a three-year run in the finals.

Elise Hackl, the Midwest producer for Varsity Vocals, said 160 groups competed across the nation to get to the finals.

“The Midwest has been one of the toughest regions competitively as a cappella continues to explode,” she said.

In the past two years, two of the three top-ranking groups have been from the Midwest region.

The group earned an outstanding choreography award for its entire set, and soloist Grace Klonoski was named the ICHSA outstanding vocalist for a second year.

“This is the culmination of 11 years of work,” director Travis Erikson said.

“It’s taken a lot of time and effort, and a lot of community support.”

Vocal Rush, a group from the Oakland School for the Arts in Oakland, California, placed first, and Vocal Point, from Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School in Galesville, Wisconsin, was third.

Grants from the DeKalb Community Foundation and the DeKalb Education Foundation played a key role in allowing the group to compete. “[The money] allowed us to practice with microphones,” Erikson said. “We couldn’t have competed at that level without the technology everyone else has, and that’s critical.”

The group practiced between 15 and 20 hours a week since the beginning of the year, with competition days run-

ning 12 hours long.

Senior Ben Vance said this focus paid off.

“You get out what you put in and you really can accomplish amazing things if a group of talented people all put in their best effort,” he said. “One a cappella critic blogged that this was the year Enharmonic Fusion went from one of the best high school groups in the county to one of the most memorable high school groups he’s ever experienced live.”

The group was interviewed on Acaville Radio, an Internet station.

The interview will re-air at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Perhaps one of the most exciting moments for the group was being able to perform a part of its set for the woman who wrote the song.

Vance sang “Seriously” by Sara Bareilles as part of the group’s set. The group found Bareilles signing autographs after performing in “Waitress” and serenaded her.

Erikson said there is a benefit to having musical groups enter competitions beyond the accolades.

“There’s really no training for performance but performance [itself], so the more they do that, the more they become seasoned veteran performers,” he said. “And, they’ve had to learn resiliency when things don’t go their way. I think that builds a lot of character. They learn mental toughness, because it is stressful.”

The group still is busy. It will host a Lip Sync Contest for fellow students tonight and will perform at the music booster fundraiser, Talk Derby to Me, on Saturday.

Enharmonic Fusion will have one final showcase concert June 1 at DHS, and will sing with the University of Chicago a cappella group, Voices in Your Head, on June 2 at Logan Performance Hall in Chicago.

Man charged with child abduction free on bond

DeKALB – A DeKalb man accused of luring children into his home in the 400 block of Debonaire Parkway is free on his own recognizance and due back in court June 2.

Paul T. Bolden, 56, is charged with child abduction. If convicted, he could face one to three years in prison.

Paul T. DeKalb police Deputy Chief John Petra- Bolden gallo said three girls age 17 and younger were walking in the neighborhood of Bolden’s home April 17, and that after they separated, he invited two of them in, asking them if they’d like to see his dog.

While DeKalb police investigated that incident, they were told Bolden had invited the other girl inside, too, and offered her money to teach him to read and write, court records show.

In neither case did any of the girls enter the house, Petragallo said.

Bolden was arrested April 18 at his home. He told police that one of the girls had run off after his dog urinated on her leg, court records show. When he appeared in court for a bond hearing April 19, the state asked for it to be set at $500,000. Judge Philip Montgomery set his recognizance bond at $5,000, requiring him to post no money, on the condition that he be placed on electronic home monitoring, restricting him to be only at home or at work.

Bolden will next appear in court at 9 a.m. June 2.

CHICAGO – The former head of Chicago Public Schools was sentenced Friday to more than four years in prison for steering $23 million in city contracts to education firms for a cut of more than $2 million in kickbacks.

A tearful Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who held top education jobs in Detroit and Cleveland before being tapped to lead the nation’s third-largest school district, apologized in a 15-minute statement before she was sentenced, saying: “What I did was terribly wrong. ... I’m ashamed and I’m sorry.”

But U.S. District Court Judge Edmond Chang said her brazenness in bilking an already cash-strapped school district suggested she never believed she’d get caught in a city with a long, ignominious history of corruption. CHICAGO – Prosecutors said a man charged in the fatal shooting of a Cook County judge sneaked up with a gun to the judge’s home days before the slaying to commit a robbery but changed his mind.

At a bond hearing Friday, prosecutors said that Earl Wilson told another person that he needed money and was going to rob Judge Raymond Myles’ girlfriend because she had “a lot of money.”

O’Hare security chief fired weeks after United flub

CHICAGO – The head of security at Chicago’s airports has been fired, just weeks after a passenger was dragged from a United Airlines plane by security officers at O’Hare International Airport.

The Department of Aviation said in a statement Thursday that Jeffrey Redding “has been terminated from his duties” at O’Hare and Midway airports. No reason was given.

Redding was overseeing the investigation into the forcible removal of 69-year-old physician David Dao from the United plane by three of his officers April 9. Dao has agreed to an undisclosed settlement with the airline. Dao’s lawyer said Thursday that the settlement averts any lawsuit against

As for why she took part in the scheme, Scudder wrote: “Nobody has struggled more with this question than Barbara herself.”

When scrutiny of district contracts grew in 2013, Byrd-Bennett began deleting potentially incriminating emails, according to prosecutors. She resigned in June 2015, as word spread of an investigation.

Prison agency rescinds nurse layoffs to still talk

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Corrections has withdrawn its plan to lay off 124 nurses while continuing to negotiate with the state employees’ union.

Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said Thursday the department had informed the Illinois Nurses Association that it would not remove the nurses June 15. She said prison officials are available to meet any time but the union is unavailable until May 8.

Union spokesman Chris Martin said the Corrections Department decision is welcome news. He encouraged support for legislation to halt privatizing prison jobs that was sent to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Trump tells NRA: ‘You have a true friend’ in White House

ATLANTA – President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for gun rights Friday, telling attendees of a National Rifle Association convention that “the eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end.”

Trump, the first sitting president to address the group’s annual convention in more than 30 years, assured the audience that he would defend their right to bear arms in a campaign-like speech reminiscent of his election rallies.

“You have a true friend and champion in the White House,” he said.

The president’s trip to Atlanta also served as his first foray into a congressional race since taking office. After delivering his NRA remarks, the president headed to a private fundraiser for Republican congressional candidate Karen Handel, who is running in a special congressional race that has become a national referendum on his presidency.

During the speech, the president congratulated Handel and urged Republicans to support her.

“She’s totally for the NRA, and she’s totally for the Second Amendment, so get out and vote,” he said.

Trump has been a champion of gun rights and supportive of NRA efforts to loosen restrictions on gun ownership. During the campaign, he promised to do away with President Barack Obama’s efforts to strengthen background checks and to eliminate gun-free zones at schools and military bases.

The last president to address an NRA convention was Ronald Reagan, who spoke to the 1983 gathering, according to the powerful gun rights lobby.

Trump’s appearance in Atlanta sparked protests from people advocating for stricter gun control measures. They included Steve Hagen, who called the NRA’s push for federal legislation to make any state’s concealed-carry permits valid nationwide “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“I guess the promoters are throwing states’ rights out the window,” Hagen, a 68-year-old from the Atlanta suburb of Tucker. “It’s just crazy.”

Opponents of the bill say the move would effectively turn the weakest gun standards in the nation into the law of the land. The GOP-led Congress already passed a resolution to block a rule that would have kept guns out of the hands of certain people with mental disorders, and Trump quickly signed it.

Trump, who also attended last year’s NRA convention as a candidate, boasts of owning a pair of guns and mentioned again on Friday that his two adult sons are avid hunters. He stirred controversy during the campaign when he suggested that “Second Amendment people” could stop his opponent Hillary Clinton, which some interpreted to be a call for violence against the Democratic nominee. Trump disputed that charge.

Thumbs-up to new DHS leader Thumbs-up: To a new principal for DeKalb High School. On Thursday, the DeKalb School District 428 Board approved a one-year contract with James Horne, assistant principal for academic programs at DeKalb High School, to become the school’s next principal. The board decided months ago not to renew the contract of Principal Michele Albano, and the decision, this time, to promote from within should hopefully bring some continuity to a school in need of it. Although at least one incoming school board member objected to the decision coming before new board members took office, we are pleased to see someone will be ready to take leadership of the building on a long-term basis. We congratulate Horne and wish him success in his new and important role in the community.

Thumbs-down: To the Illinois House who approved a bill Wednesday to require that cursive writing be taught in elementary and high schools. While the state remains stuck in myriad problems without solutions, they continue to find solutions without problems. Justification for this mandate is so that students can learn to write signatures, which should take about five minutes, and be able to interpret historical documents, in case we somehow lose the text of the Constitution. The Bible originally was written in ancient Hebrew and Greek, but we all manage to understand what’s in it. This should be a local issue for local school boards to determine.

Thumbs-up: To the launch of a mental health court in DeKalb County. This week, the county’s court system began a mental health court program designed to intervene when residents suffering from mental illness wind up in the criminal justice system. People who are breaking the law because their actions are being driven by a mental health problem can consume a lot of resources and not get the help they need. The county’s grant-funded program will have to reduce the number of nonviolent offenders sentenced to prison by 25 percent; if they meet that goal, they will save taxpayers thousands of dollars.

This is a sensible approach we hope will result in more people getting the help they need, rather than jail and prison sentences.

Thumbs-down: To DeKalb’s gas-station-packed intersection at Hillcrest Drive and North First Street. We’re pleased to see redevelopment occurring on one of the lots near that intersection, where a plan for an unattended gas station on an abandoned lot was approved this week.

But the intersection already has an operating gas station across the street and an abandoned station at another corner. Gas stations are good sales and other tax generators while they’re operating, but once they close down, they’re difficult to redevelop because the underground infrastructure is expensive to remove, and leaks have to be cleaned up. We hope the new, virtually employee-free gas station generates revenue for the city, but are also resigned to the fact that one of the three gas stations at that area will be abandoned for years to come.

Pass the Miners Protection Act Time is running out for retired coal miners and their dependents, again.

If Congress fails to act this week, the beleaguered miners and dependents will be without health insurance, something that came perilously close to happening in December 2016.

Sen. Mitch McConnell engineered a short-term deal then, kicking the can down the road until the end of April.

The need for continuing health insurance coverage comes at a time when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an increase in black lung disease. Before 2000, the deadly disease had been on a decline for 30 years.

We urge Congress to quickly pass the Miners Protection Act. Coverage runs out April 30.

This bill, with support, would shore up the funding for both the retired miners’ health coverage and their lagging

pension fund. The Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation Fund provides the foundation for the money for these benefits.

McConnell has proposed an alternative legislative fix, but his bill stipulates further rolling back regulations he said are costly to mining. Further, his bill covers only the health care benefit.

Congress and the president have already eliminated regulations – specifically the Obama Administration’s stream-buffer rule.

Over the years, these plans for retirees and their spouses have been revised and revised and revised, beginning shortly after agreements were first struck during a strike in the late 1940s.

These benefits require a steady stream of contributions from both coal companies and working miners. The death spiral really began in the late

1970s, long before the often-cited EPA regulations critics claimed changed the dynamics of the industry.

More recently, demand for coal, automation and rising mining costs mean fewer coal miners working and contributing to the program. This perfect storm exacerbated the financial woes of coal companies. They began filing for bankruptcy protection, further crippling the money stream.

McConnell and President Trump owe a great deal of their success to the miners. They campaigned on the importance of coal. Promises were made years ago. Promises were made in recent years to bring back coal jobs.

Put the Miners Protection Act on the schedule and, once and for all, give the thousands of struggling miners and families some peace of mind. Keep your promise.

The next president? Odds favor ‘other’ Will Donald Trump be re-elected in 2020?

Probably not, say people who bet.

They give Trump only a 23 percent chance. They do pick him over all other politicians, but the favorite is “other.”

I know this because I follow the betting odds at ElectionBettingOdds.com.

Yes, bettors were wrong about Trump’s election and Brexit, but those were exceptions, and those votes unusual. Even Brexit’s promoters predicted a loss; even Trump said he thought he’d lose when he saw the election-night exit polls.

But betting odds are usually right.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if the bettors gave a candidate, say, a 65 percent chance to win, and he lost, bettors were “wrong.” But remember, 65 percent means bettors also thought there was a 35 percent chance that candidate would lose.

There’s wisdom in crowds, if the crowds put their money where their mouths are.

Bettors accurately picked Oscar winners, “American Idol” winners and most important elections. ElectionBettingOdds.com named VP picks Mike Pence and Tim Kaine a week before they were picked.

Even when bettors bet wrong, they are quicker to adjust than others. By

Devious teens stashing drugs in calculators, DEA warns

Does your teen spend a lot of time with his graphing calculator? That could be a sign of a drug problem, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

On April 20, the DEA tweeted out a link with a simple imperative: Find out where kids hide drugs. The link takes you to a page titled “Hiding Places” at getsmartaboutdrugs.gov, “a DEA resource for parents, educators and caregivers.”

“If your young loved one is dealing with drug addiction, they often become secretive,” the DEA warns, “and as parents you may find answers in their rooms or vehicles. For those facing this serious issue, here are a few common places your teen could be hiding drugs.”

What follows is a laundry list, in convenient slideshow format, of where wily teens stash their drugs. The list includes: • Alarm clocks: “Some of the digital clocks can be used to hide illicit drugs,” the DEA warns, “specifically

small baggies in the battery compartment alongside the batteries.”

• Graphing calculators: “You usually wouldn’t be suspicious of your teen keeping his or her graphing calculator close,” the DEA explains. “But if you suspect them of drug addiction you may have to be.” As with alarm clocks, drugs can evidently be stashed in calculator battery compartments.

• Highlighters: Drugs stashed in the caps, obviously.

• Shoes: Yes, every teen wears shoes. But did you know some teens hide drugs in them?

• Candy wrappers: The DEA warns that many drugs look like candy, so of course a drug-addled teen is going to mix some ecstasy tabs in with his Smarties.

• Posters: If Andy Dufresne can hide an escape tunnel behind Raquel Welch in “The Shawshank Redemption,” simple logic dictates that your kid can hide meth behind Pink Floyd.

• Heating vents: If we learned anything from “Breaking Bad,” it’s that wall vents can be used to store all sorts of contraband, including drug-

filled baggies.

• Teddy bears: “If your teen is still holding on to his or her adored childhood teddy bear, you may want to consider this,” the DEA warns. “The inside seams of the stuffed animal can be used to hide small amounts of drugs.”

• Car interiors: This one has some basis in fact – a recent Marist survey found a whopping 3 percent of marijuana users hide their stash in their car. For particularly devious teens, the nice thing about cars is they offer “a plethora of places they can hide drugs,” according to the DEA. • Game consoles: If a kid can hide heroin in a graphing calculator, who knows what depths of depravity he may be able to conceal in a Wii U? The general take-home message of the page – and of the “getsmartaboutdrugs” website in general – is that seemingly innocuous objects and behaviors can be signs of a life-ruining drug habit. Candy wrappers, belt buckles, ski caps, glow sticks and pacifiers are all potential pieces of drug paraphernalia, according to the site.

Warning signs of teen drug use

include “disinterest in school,” “lack of interest in clothing,” new friends, and “excessive attempts to be alone.”

The categories are so broad as to be practically meaningless, a reflection, in part, of the DEA’s worldview that drugs are everywhere and everyone is a potential criminal.

The reality, of course, is considerably more mundane. Among teens, use of illicit drugs other than marijuana is near historic lows, and marijuana use is flat or falling. There are a number of possible explanations for what’s behind this – more entertainment options and a stunning drop in cigarette use chief among them – but one thing experts generally do agree on is that heavy-handed enforcement and scare campaigns a la the 1980s aren’t one of them.

So parents, take heart: If your kid seems really into her graphing calculator, all it really means is that she’s well on her way to a career as a successful engineer.

Knights coach Scott Parillo said he wishes his team could have gotten a couple more ugly ones.

The Spartans benefited from a Kaneland own-goal and a weird bounce for a pair of goals in a 3-1 win for Sycamore.

Parillo said those type of “ugly” goals are difference makers in close games.

“But that’s soccer – that’s what we were saying, we don’t need a pretty goal, we just need a goal,” Parillo said.

“We got a pretty goal. We just needed a couple ugly ones maybe, and it just didn’t happen.”

The teams were scoreless until the 55th minute when Taylor Meier got off a contested shot from the far right side of the net for the Spartans (13-13 overall, 5-0 NIB 12 East). The ball rolled slowly but was out of the reach of Kaneland goalie Emma Ball, going in for the first goal of the game with 25:21 left in the game.

“It wasn’t a good goal, I guess, it was kind of lucky,” Meier said. “But we did a good job working the ball up the field. We came back at halftime talking about doing that, passing through their defense, and that’s what we did. But we got a lucky goal.”

With 12:37 left, Cali Carl took a corner kick that ended up going in as an own goal of the Knights, credited as a goal for Carl.

Down, 2-0, it didn’t take the Knights (9-6, 2-3) long to get back into the game.

lo said he expects her back Tuesday when the teams meet again in Sycamore. But they may be without Bailey Prichard, who was hit with a ball in the face early in the game Friday.

Spartans take rubber Jacobs nearly sets meet match against Knights record in Spartans win

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – In a fitting end to a tight series, Sycamore outdueled Kaneland, 2-1, in the rubber match.

Junior designated hitter Jacob Cavanaugh provided the offense for the Spartans, blasting a two-run single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning, knocking home James Marcinowski and Tyler Didio.

“I had right field on my mind, and I got my pitch. I got a good swing on it, and I hit it out there,” Cavanaugh said. “Teammates set you up for it.

You come up in the spot. You pick them up, sometimes they pick you up and you get the win.”

Kaneland (11-9 overall, 4-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) came back in the top of the fifth inning to put one run across the board as Zachary Farris scored on a Joey Brandonisio single.

But that was all the offense the Knights could muster.

Starting pitcher Jarod Montavon gave up only one run on four hits in four innings for the Spartans (14-6, 5-4). Marcinowski came in from right field to pitch three scoreless innings in relief.

“It’s always about pitching and defense. The big difference today is that we got the timely hit. Both of our pitchers did an excellent job,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said.

“Apparently we’re magnets for the ball to the face,” Parillo said. “I’d prefer that wouldn’t happen.”

Lichamer said he expects another close game when the teams meet again Tuesday in the second of what could be three meetings this year – if both teams win their opener of the Class 2A Sycamore Regional in mid-May, they’d play in the title game.

“Hopefully we’ll be ready to go,” Lichamer said. “Conference game, when you’re playing back-to-back like this like I was telling them, there’s no surprises.

There’s no mystery to what you’re doing. You have to execute your game plan because you’re not going to do anything sneaky or new or anything else.”

By the numbers: It was the third win

That was it. Two runs on one swing and only one (run) for us,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said.

By the numbers: Austin Mereness went 2 for 3 for the Spartans. while teammate Didio added two hits.

Beyond the stats: In the fourth inning, Kaneland third baseman Luke Calabrese hit a low line drive to Sycamore shortstop Zach Carlsen, who gloved it on the short hop and made a running throw to first baseman Jack Mizgalski, who dug it out of the dirt for the out. The next batter, Robert Dudzinski, crushed a double to right field.

They said it: “It’s always a struggle against Kaneland. Easily more than half of our games are one-run games and go down to the last pitch,” Cavanaugh said.

Up next: Sycamore hosts Johnsburg 10 a.m. Saturday at Sycamore Park District. Kaneland plays Morris at home at 4:30 p.m. Monday. this week for the Spartans after losing 2-0 to Freeport at the Pretzel Cup, their first loss of the year. It was only the second time this year Kaneland lost by more than one goal, the first being a 2-0 defeat to DeKalb on April 18.

Beyond the stats: The Knights made a couple big defensive plays early. Both Sarah Baerenklau and Taylor Zitkus got in the way of Sycamore shots, preventing shots directly at Ball.

They said it: “Obviously we would have wished for a better result,” Parillo said. “It didn’t happen but we played well. It’s hard to be upset when you play halfway decent. It’s when you play bad and you lose, that’s when you’re upset.

But we didn’t play bad. I thought defensively we played very well, and toward the end there we had a couple breakdowns, and that’s soccer too.

Up next: The teams play each other again at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sycamore.

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Despite finishing with what would have been a meet record, Sycamore senior Evan Jacobs narrowly missed out on having his name go in the record books.

Marmion Academy’s Michael Ronzone barely edged out Jacobs in the 800-meter run to break the Gig Seegers Classic record, but Jacobs helped lead the Spartans to a first-place finish in their own seven-team meet Friday in Sycamore.

“I was happy I beat my time, though,” Jacobs said. “I was just running and just going and trying to get first, I wasn’t thinking about time.”

Jacobs, who came into the day with a seed time of 2 minutes, 0.24 seconds in the 800, finished in 1:56:07 – good enough to break Oswego’s Tony Sissom’s three-decade old record of 1:56.6 in 1986. However, Ronzone was a hair better than Jacobs, finishing in 1:55.98.

The Spartans took first place as a team with 131 points, followed by Marmion (122) and DeKalb (92).

Jacobs was able to put an exclamation point on the night for the Spartans, being the final leg of their firstplace 1,600 relay team, which also consisted of Phillip Maillefer, Quinton Benzschawel and Sam Hancock.

Sycamore was in second place when Hancock, the third leg, got the baton but ended up with a five-second cushion by the time Jacobs crossed the finish line.

“Even Phillip on that lead leg, it’s hard to run where he was (in lane three) because you have to play catchup until the stagger,” Sycamore coach Pete Piccony said. “He held them off on the straightaway, which is hard for a sprinter to do.”

Hancock also won both the 110 hurdles (15.93) and the 300 hurdles (41.78).

Sycamore senior distance runner Connor Farrell led wire-to-wire in the 3,200 run, finishing with a time of 9:51.

He opened his lead during the fourth lap and then held on with DeKalb’s Emmanuel Yepiz crossing in 9:53.12.

“Sometimes I like running with the lead because it makes me feel a little more comfortable,” Farrell said.

“I could hear the footsteps behind me fade a little bit (in the fourth lap), I just made an effort on the curves to speed up a little bit.”

He threw 158-2 at the Ottawa ABC Invitational on April 15, 160-1 at a three-way meet at Sycamore on April 18 and then 172-8½ at the Peterson Prep Invitational at Kaneland on April 22.

“Piccony said that since we’re at home, I need to PR today,” laughed Weckerly, who also won the shot put (50-8½) Friday. “I’ve been trying to hit 180 because that’s what my coach has wanted me to hit. My goal is 185 on the year, so I said, ‘Today, I want 180 or higher.’ ” For DeKalb, which was without star hurdler and sprinter Zuerek Day, sprinter Tristan Bujarski and pole vaulter Alexander Peterson were the only first-place finishers. Bujarski is creeping closer to breaking the 11-second mark, recording a time of 11.04 on Friday.

“I think everything was in place for that one,” Bujarski said. “My start was really good and I felt like when I got up, I kept going smooth.”

By the numbers: DeKalb’s Brian Ross came into the day with a seed mark of 6-3 in the high jump and recorded a 6-5 for a second-place finish.

For Sycamore, Jake Peloquin came in with a seed mark of 128-1 in the discus and finished second with a 138-7.

Beyond the stats: Piccony said he was worried about a gloomy weather forecast, but the meet was dry the entire time and he said it was “perfect” conditions.

They said it: “It’s always nice to win your own meet,” Piccony said.

“And the weather held. I was so nervous about the weather this morning.

They were saying 50 percent chance and then 80 percent chance around 4 o’clock and it did not rain once. We got lucky.”

Up next: The Spartans will host Sterling for a meet Tuesday, and the Barbs will host the Tim Holt Invite on Friday.

Up-and-down season ends with playoff ousting by Celtics

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – There would be no valiant last stand at home for the Bulls.

Instead, all the United Center crowd was treated to was a fading whimper of a No. 8 seed.

A reminder that playing Jekyll and Hyde basketball throughout the 41-41 regular season was inevitably going to catch up to them in the postseason.

Friday, it did just that.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the bestof-seven series, the Bulls watched top-seeded Boston advance by beating them in four straight games, with the final dagger being pushed in emphatically in Game 6, 105-83.

“It’s a wrap for these [bleepity bleepers],” Celtics All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas yelled to his teammates midway through the third quarter.

Thomas was just stating the obvious.

He could have easily said the same thing after Game 2, however.

It was late in the third quarter of that Bulls win that Rajon Rondo fractured his right thumb, and although the veteran finished the game and was

“I mean, it’s a different team,” veteran Dwyane Wade said of the Bulls without Rondo. “It’s as simple as that. You know, we got into the playoffs at the last hour of the season.

“This is an adverse situation, losing Rondo. Anytime adverse situations hit,

we’ve found a way.”

Maybe in the regular season, but in the playoffs? That’s where weaknesses are exposed and teams can’t run from what they really are.

And while the Rondo injury did play a factor, it didn’t change the fact that the Bulls were up, 2-0, and still had star power in Jimmy Butler and Wade.

As the series went on, however, Butler was dealing with numerous injuries, including his foot, knee and left hand. Likely a product of how hard he played down the stretch to even will this team into the postseason.

He finished Game 6 with 23 points and seven rebounds, but was limping by the end of the third and sat for the remainder of the game.

“That’s one thing people don’t realize, how banged up Jimmy was,” coach Fred Hoiberg said after the loss. “Jimmy is a warrior, he battled and fought all the way through, even though he wasn’t 100 percent.”

Butler, however, continued to downplay the injuries, simply focusing on a failure to advance to the second round.

“Nobody feels sorry for me that I’m nicked up,” Butler said. “I’m OK with

it. No excuses for that.”

And Wade?

For the first time this season, it looked like his fountain of youth had finally dried up.

The 35-year-old played just 20 minutes and scored a playoff-tying career-low two points on 1-for-10 shooting.

Now he will have plenty of time to rest, and decide if he wants to return to the Bulls with his player option at $23.8 million for next season.

“I’m far away from that now,” Wade said of making that pending decision.

“Just got through this 14th NBA season.

If I’m not winning a championship I’m never satisfied from that standpoint, but you take things out of it, you go back and look at the season and see what you could have done better individually.”

One decision that didn’t need review as far as most were concerned? To a man they want the front office to bring Rondo back. The playoffs offered up further evidence of why.

“Of course,” Butler said of a Rondo return. “He’s been huge for us this year.

But I don’t know what the future holds for anybody. I’ll sit back and wait on that time to come.”

The DeKalb girls track and field team had plenty of first-place finishes and took second at the Woodstock Invitational on Friday night.

The Barbs took first place in six different running events.

Bri Buggs won the 100-meter dash (12.41 seconds) and the 200 dash (26.31), Katherine Olsen took the 800 run (2:18.06) and the 1,600 run (5:06.90), Kyra Ozier won the 400 dash (1:00.54) and the 400 relay team of K’maris Kirkwood, Ozier, Mirea Martinez and Buggs also took first (49.36).

Brianna Barwick was second in the 300 hurdles (49.25) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.38), and Long took fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.52).

The 800 relay team of Kirkwood, Martinez, Long and Buggs was second (1:47.50), and the 1,600 team of Long, Martinez, Michiah Kirkwood and Ozier also placed second (4:14.91).

As a team, the Barbs finished with 99.5 points, good for second place be-

Sox win 5th straight

DETROIT – A month ago veteran right-hander Mike Pelfrey was apologizing to Tigers fans for not living up to expectations in 2016 and forcing the organization’s hand into letting him go at the end of spring training with a year’s worth of salary ($8 million) left on his contract.

On Friday night at Comerica Park, Pelfrey returned but in a White Sox uniform, a thrift store pickup for general manager Rick Hahn, pitching against his former team and, as the oddities of baseball would have it, being paid by the Tigers.

And helping the Sox beat them, 7-3, and jumping into first place in the American League Central in the process.

Called up from Triple-A Charlotte last week to fill the disabled James Shields’ spot in the rotation, Pelfrey was far from spectacular for the second straight outing. But he handed the ball to the Sox’s lights-out bullpen (1.83 ERA, second in the majors) with two outs in the fifth inning and the score tied at 3, then watched his catcher, Geovany Soto, line a two-run single against Alex Wilson to left field in the eighth inning to break the tie.

The result? A fifth straight win for the Sox (12-9), who opened a 10-game road trip by climbing over the Indians into first place.

While it might be too soon to carry on about first place, it’s worth gloating about for a rebuilding team that got there with baseball’s second-best bullpen in April and a player of the month candidate in Avisail Garcia carrying the offense. Garcia slugged his fifth homer one pitch after Todd Frazier clubbed

his second against left-hander Matthew Boyd to start the second and tie the score at 2.

Garcia raised his average to .388 with three hits, drove in two runs, scored two and made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the game.

“A complete team victory,” manager Rick Renteria said. After Pelfrey (42/3 innings, three runs), left-hander Dan Jennings recorded one out and Anthony Swarzak (2-0) pitched two hitless innings to remain unscored on in his eight appearances before Nate Jones and Tommy Kahnle locked things down with perfect eighth and ninth innings.

The Sox caught two breaks when Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos made glove errors on back-to-back double-play grounders by Frazier and Garcia in the eighth. The Tigers almost escaped the ensuing bases-loaded jam when Matt Davidson hit into a shortstopto-home-to-first double play, but after Carlos Sanchez was walked intentionally, Soto came through with his sixth RBI of the season against the Tigers (11-11).

Tim Anderson homered against Joe Jimenez with Tyler Saladino on first in the ninth to make it 7-3.

It started with Pelfrey, who walked four but had good enough stuff to keep his team in it.

“Pelf gave us enough,” Renteria said.

While not enjoying Pelfrey having a role in their loss, the Tigers were likely happy to see him back in the major leagues, at least for now.

“Mike was huge last year in helping me grow as a pitcher,” Boyd recently told Detroit media. “He was a guy that would take me out on the road, take you to dinner and talk about a start afterward. A really great person.

MONSTER MASH Kris Bryant cleared the Green Monster in left field with his first-inning home run. It was Bryant’s first game as a pro at Fenway.

“We had practice here in college, and I didn’t hit one home run out in BP (batting practice), so, hopefully, I can change the tides there,” he said before the game.

BOSTON – Cubs manager Joe Maddon has proclaimed his allegiance to the National League.

But Maddon’s Cubs did have some success playing by American League rules at Cleveland last fall in the World Series.

So for this weekend’s interleague series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox, Maddon will get to use the designated hitter.

Both the Cubs and Red Sox came out swinging Friday night. Kris Bryant got the Cubs going with a solo homer in the top of the first inning, but the Red Sox hit Jake Arrieta with five runs in the bottom of the inning and held on for a 5-4 victory. The Cubs chipped away most of the night, but they left two runners stranded in the eighth.

The Cubs used Kyle Schwarber as the DH and put Ben Zobrist in left field.

“It’s just like last year in Cleveland, the fact where our lineup is programmed and the ability to get Schwarbs as DH as well as put somebody else out there defensively, it makes us stronger, there’s no question,” Maddon said. “An American

League lineup should make your team stronger, offensively speaking.

“Having said that, I love that. But I still like the National League game better. I think the National League game is a better game of baseball than American League baseball. I can say that now after having been here a couple years and doing both. To me, the National League game is a much more interesting game, at least from the dugout it is.”

Arrieta lasted only 41/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and five runs. It was his shortest outing since he went four innings on Aug. 28, 2014, at Cincinnati.

Kenny Golladay didn’t have a Division I offer coming out of Chicago St. Rita and now he’s going to the NFL. The former Northern Illinois star receiver was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday night, taken with the 96th overall pick.

In only two years with the Huskies, Golladay is sixth all-time in career receptions (160), fifth in career receiving yards (2,285) and tied for eighth in touchdown receptions (18). A first team all-Mid-American Conference player last year, he had 87 catches for 1,156 yards to become the only player in school history with back-to-back seasons with 1,000-plus receiving yards.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound receiver garnered little attention coming out of high school and played two seasons at North Dakota before transferring to NIU, where he delighted fans with his highlight-reel, one-handed catches.

He was the third pick for Detroit in the draft and he joins a Lions team that went 9-7 last season and lost, 26-6, to Seattle in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

The Bears traded down to the 45th pick Friday night, where they took Ashland tight end Adam Shaheen.

A 6-foot-6, 278-pounder, Shaheen played basketball at Division II Pittsburgh-Johnstown before transferring to Ashland to play football.

“I just really missed football,” Shaheen said on a conference call. “I didn’t have much opportunity to play football coming out of high school because I was so thin. But I had a bug in me after watching an Adam Shaheen Ohio State game and just made the switch after that year.

And I’m very happy I did.”

A self-described “late bloomer,” Shaheen said he was only 6-4, 196 pounds coming out of high school before putting on weight at Ashland while maintaining his speed to become an NFL prospect.

“At the beginning of this year,

scouts started coming in. And it was just physically when you look at the size and speed I have, I have similar characteristics to these guys going in the NFL,” he said. “Even though I was at the Division II level, I knew I’d be able to play and have an opportunity if I kept working at it and developing into a complete tight end.”

In 2015, Shaheen had 70 catches for 803 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, he set a school record with 16 touchdowns while catching 57 passes for 567 yards.

“I just wanted to come in this draft and show that I could do both (receiving and blocking),” Shaheen said. “I was asked a lot more in college to catch the ball, and I was very successful at that. But I also did a lot of blocking. We ran a lot of power and off-tackle stuff.

So I was in there blocking, as well.

That’s what I love to do, as well. Right now, I think the tape will show that I have pretty good hands, but I want to be a complete guy that’s going to do it all.”

Here at UCLA, we have a memory program for adults with known risk factors for cognitive decline. These risk factors include being sedentary, being overweight, having diabetes or having a family history of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Studies show stress and depression also can have a hand in memory issues.

Participants in the UCLA program improve their diets and are asked to exercise regularly and work on stress reduction.

They also do brain training, some of it quite similar to the regimens reported in the Neuron study. They make a point of memorizing the kind of information we now relegate to our electronic devices, such as a shopping list, frequently called phone numbers, birthdays of family and friends, addresses and one or two credit card numbers.

At the end of 12 weeks, participants reported improvements not only to their memories, but also to their moods and general sense of well-being. They enjoyed the challenges of shopping without a list and skipping the autodial feature on their phones to make calls themselves.

Perhaps a similar memory program is available in your area. And even if not, an improved diet, more exercise and basic memory practice are changes you can incorporate into your own life.

Dear Doctors: My memory is terrible.

To be honest, it always has been. I seem to spend half my time searching for my keys or wondering whether I forgot to turn off the stove and lights. Could memory training help?

Dear Reader: Ready for a short answer that you’re not likely to forget?

Yes. As long as problems with recall do not arise from either medical or physiological issues, it is indeed possible to improve one’s memory. And it’s not just a matter of mastering complex systems or relying on clever tricks. An intriguing study published in the scientific journal Neuron shows a certain type of memory training has a measurable and lasting effect on networks that connect different regions of our brains.

Researchers compared the brain activity of 23 top memory athletes with 23 people with no memory training at all. After just six weeks of training, scans of the brains of the amateurs began to resemble those of the memory athletes.

The training focused on a strategy known as “method of loci,” also sometimes called the memory palace. The idea is you mentally “place” things you want to remember – a person’s name, where you put the phone bill, what your spouse asked you to pick up at the store – into a landscape you know really well. Then when you picture yourself moving through that landscape, you’ll encounter the items you wanted to remember.

What was striking about the study wasn’t just that the amateurs significantly improved their memories. In the months after learning and adopting the method of loci technique, the new pathways created in their brains still were there.

That’s all pretty high-octane stuff. But science shows maintaining a good memory

DEAR ABBY When my daughter and Jeanne her family come Phillips to visit, they are very messy.

They have a 3- and a 4-year-old and two large, long-haired dogs. I can deal with the children’s messiness – but the dogs, no.

I agreed to let them bring their dogs if they cleaned up after them, but it hasn’t happened. The dogs shed terribly. The hair needs to be vacuumed daily. They don’t practice it at home and don’t do it here, even after being told the dog hair is everywhere in my house.

We are 70 and active, but a lot of cleaning must be done when they leave. I especially don’t like it around food. I told my husband I have decided to tell them they can no longer bring their dogs here. He goes around and tries to clean up after them so I won’t get upset instead of letting them take responsibility. He says he’s afraid they will quit coming.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Under supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in building maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair.

A successful bridge player has ability and zeal. Whether declarer or a defender, he counts winners, losers and high-card points. In today’s deal, for example, how should South plan the play in seven clubs after West leads the heart queen?

That North hand was nearly too strong for a 15-17 no-trump because of its five-card suit, three aces and one king. (That ace-king number is typical for a two-no-trump opening.)

South, giving due credit to his long suit, used two doses of Gerber before signing off in seven clubs.

Usually in a trump contract, you first count losers. However, in a grand slam you cannot afford any, so you should tally winners. Here, declarer starts with 12: two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs.

From where may the extra winner come?

South must establish a third diamond trick, either because the queen falls in one or two rounds, or by finding the suit splitting 4-3.

Declarer carefully takes the first trick with his heart king, to retain the ace as a vital dummy entry. He cashes the club king and diamond king, then plays a trump to dummy’s ace.

After a diamond ruff, a third round of trumps, a spade to dummy’s king, a second diamond ruff and a heart to the ace, South cashes the diamond ace and jack, on which he discards his two remaining major-suit cards.
