CHICAGO – The passenger who was dragged off a flight after refusing to give up his seat settled with United for an undisclosed sum Thursday in an apparent attempt by the airline to put the fiasco behind it as quickly as possible.

David Dao’s legal team said the agreement includes a provision that the amount will remain confidential. One of his lawyers praised United CEO Oscar Munoz.

Munoz “said he was going to do the right thing, and he has,” attorney Thomas Demetrio said in a brief statement. “In addition, United has taken full responsibility for what happened ... without attempting to blame others, including the city of Chicago.”

The deal means United will not face a lawsuit, which could have been costly, both in legal bills and in further damage to the airline’s reputation.

United issued a brief statement, saying it was pleased to report “an amicable resolution of the unfortunate incident that occurred aboard Flight 3411.”

The dragging was one of several recent embarrassments for United. The airline was criticized in March after a gate agent stopped two teenage girls from boarding a flight because they were wearing leggings – an apparent violation of a dress code for passengers traveling in a program for employees and their dependents. Then a giant showcase rabbit died this week after it was shipped across the Atlantic on a United flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to O’Hare.

Mental Health Court offers a new avenue to productive living

SYCAMORE – A woman appears in DeKalb County Court via closed-circuit TV. Before Judge Philip Montgomery can greet her, she asks a chilling question: “Can you help me?”

As the judge tries to get a word in, she asks again.

A few days later, another woman spends more than 20 minutes trying to convince the court that she can get her brother to Kishwaukee Hospital for a mental evaluation.

The chief concern: Will he again fight with her, punch an officer, as he’s accused of having done the last time she tried to get him to his appointment?

Neither of the defendants has a criminal history.

On Monday, the county’s court system began a mental health court program geared to intervene when residents find themselves in a potential downward spiral.

“What we want to do is not even have them get into the criminal justice system,” said Deanna Cada, director of the Community Mental Health Board, which funds the county’s psychiatric support. “There’s a difference between someone who is criminal and [someone who] has a mental illness.

“For criminals, the criminal intent is what’s driving them. Some people have a mental illness that’s driving their actions. The best thing to do is to sort those people out before they even get to the system.”

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato, who took office Dec. 1, during the Mental Health Court program’s development, said it gives the justice system another tool to help the community.

“Traditionally, there are needs that haven’t been met because we’re not finding the cause,” Amato said.

“They don’t belong in jail, or in court over and over again. What else can you do to help these people?

“This program will help answer that, and will help us make our community a lot safer.”

How it works

The mental health court program is similar to the county’s drug and DUI court programs, recognized by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals as model programs nationwide.

Certified by the Administrative Office of Illinois Court on April 5, the program kicked off Monday, when two people pleaded guilty and were put into the program. Adult Redeploy Illinois funds the program with a grant, on the condition that at least eight people are assisted a year. Douglas said 32 people already have applied in DeKalb County.

According to a news release from the county’s treatment court, sites receiving the grant are expected to reduce the number of nonviolent offenders sent to prison by 25 percent. It adds that the average cost for each offender entering the prison system is about $6,400,

Only those charged with felony charges, which carry a prison term of a year or longer, are eligible for the program. Once referred to the program, they go through court proceedings. Anyone from their support system can be in court along with them.

After they plead guilty and opt for the program, treatment courts director Mike Douglas does a preliminary assessment.

Prosecutors have the right to object to including someone. If they do not, the person will undergo a comprehensive assessment by a team of counselors, jail staff and attorneys – from both the state’s attorney’s office and the public defender’s office – who have the final decision on admittance.

“It’s definitely a nice thing to have the team approach – it’s not one-sided at all,” Douglas said. “Everyone has a voice on the team. It’s nice to have perspective from other departments.”

The team expands after admission, with the Ben Gordon Center through Northwestern Medicine’s KishHealth System, Hope Haven and other agencies providing resources for guidance, treatment and intervention – not just at the point of diagnosis, but long thereafter.

Another key agency is the Regional Access and Mobilization Project. Its job is to help make sure participants become productive and have a feeling of selfworth once back on the streets.

Douglas said that although drug and DUI program participants typically are in the program about two years, the timeline likely will be longer for mental health program participants.

“Mental health can seem to be a revolving door,” Douglas said.

We need to get them out of that cycle of arrest, being jailed and not getting services. Mental Health Court should be the break in the cycle.”

Douglas and others call the program Judge Robbin Stuckert’s baby, but counselor Andre Joachim is quick to credit Douglas for his tenacity.

“He’s been fighting tooth and nail for this,” Joachim said. “A lot of people might not understand the life circumstances, the challenges many of these people face. The limited contact I have with them makes me want to connect them with community support that’s not always open to people in their position.”

D-428 board approves new DHS principal

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – James Horne, assistant principal for academic programs at DeKalb High School, will become the school’s next principal after the DeKalb School District 428 Board unanimously approved his contract Thursday.

Board President Victoria Newport said 19 candidates were considered for the position, but the history Horne has had with the high school and the great relationships he has with staff and students made him a perfect fit.

“I’m excited, I’m thrilled and I look forward to being a part of DeKalb,” Horne said.

Horne’s salary, which was set after reviewing the salaries of other principals within the Large Unit District Association, will be slightly less than that James Horne of current Principal Michele Albano, whose contract was not renewed in February.

Newly elected board member Jeff Hallgren said he disagrees with hiring

a principal before a full-time superintendent has been selected.

“It’s kind of like putting the cart before the horse,” Hallgren said. “Two outgoing members are making decisions for two oncoming board members, and I feel that’s inappropriate.

Choosing a new principal less than a week before new board members come in is poor timing at best.”

However, he added that he felt Horne was a capable candidate.

Valerie Pena Hernandez, who also was elected to the board during the April 4 consolidated election, said that

although she believes that the new board members should be involved in hiring decisions, she understands the urgency of filling these roles.

“I do believe a fresh look and a new perspective is ideal in the process of hiring individuals that will have such an important role, but I understand that some of these positions are time-sensitive and the more we wait, the less of a pool we can choose from,” Hernandez said. “From what I hear, James is a very involved individual and cares about the high school, and I wish him the best.”

‘Walk for Water’ to raise funds for textbooks in Tanzania

SYCAMORE – Walking for miles with gallons of water is no easy task, but it is a daily reality for women and girls in Tanzania whose homes lack infrastructure, including plumbing.

People can gain a better understanding of the hardships Tanzanians face Saturday during the Walk for Water fundraising event at Sycamore Lake.

Those who attend can carry jugs of water around the lake, try on traditional kanga skirts and African-style shirts, and speak with people from Tanzania to learn more about their country.

Walk for Water will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Sycamore Lake Rotary Park, 400 N. Cross St., and is open to the public.

Sycamore High School students worked with the DeKalb nonprofit Tanzania Development Support to or-

ganize Walk for Water for an independent study project to raise money for Tanzanian schools. Northern Illinois University students collaborated in the fundraising efforts as well.

The goal is to raise $3,500 to buy 700 new textbooks for students in Tanzania.

Those who wish to donate can visit tdsnfp.networkforgood.com/projects and select 2017 Water Walk for TDS. About $1,010 has been raised as of Thursday afternoon, according to the website.

Tricia DeBoo, a member of the nonprofit’s board of directors, said donations will be accepted until about a week after the event.

DeBoo said schools in the Tanzanian village of Nyegina do not have textbooks; instead, teachers write out lessons on chalkboards.

DeKalb police seek armed robbery suspect

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are seeking a man who robbed Huskies Discount Tobacco, 1023 W. Hillcrest Drive, on Thursday morning.

According to a safety bulletin from Northern Illinois University police, the victim told police a man entered the store at 11:50 a.m. with a gun and took money. No one was injured in the incident, according to police.

The suspect was last seen running eastbound on Hillcrest and is described as a male about 5-feet 10-inches tall, wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt, light-colored pants and a dark-colored

bandana. Police agencies including from DeKalb, NIU, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and a Genoa police K-9 officer were searching the area, police said in a news release.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses and physical evidence has been recovered from the scene, according to a police news release.

BEVERLY JEAN THRYSELIUS

Born: March 10, 1934 Died: April 25, 2017

Beverly Jean Thryselius, 83, entered into eternal life April 25th in DeLand, Florida.

Born March 10, 1934 in Marshall, Minnesota to Wallace and Grace Myers formerly of DeKalb. She was a resident of Geneva for years where she is remembered by many as managing the Colonial Restaurant. She retired from Jewel Foods in 2011 where she enjoyed working in the Deli. She loved playing cards, bingo, and the casino. She spent her final years in the warmth and sunshine of Florida just like she wanted to.

She is survived by her children, Morna Gallagher, Denise Scheribel (Mark), Mark and Dan Thryselius; along with 9 grandchildren, Jeremy, Shannon (Florencio), Sean (Darcy), Katie (Israel), Christopher, Daniel, Louis, Janelle (Alex), and Jessica; and also four great-grandchildren, Mateo, Kobe, Kai, and Alec; two brothers, Roger (Donna), David (Connie); three sisters, Sandy, Ardy (David), Gayle (Doug).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Grace; and her sister, Constance.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Council OKs funds for road project

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In order to secure nearly $800,000 in federal funding for improvements to Annie Glidden Road and Fairview Drive, the DeKalb City Council authorized spending $275,000 in motor fuel tax funds for the changes.

This project was included in improvement plans laid out by the DeKalb-Sycamore Area Transportation Study, which estimated the total cost at nearly $1.2 million.

About $800,000 will come from federal funding the city received in 2001

that was repurposed toward the project in 2016. This, along with motor fuel tax dollars and a 20 percent local match in the future, are expected to pay for the improvements.

Patrick DiDiana, DeKalb public works management analyst, said that the improvements will include lane widening, turn lanes, aesthetic improvements to the streetscape and connecting the existing traffic control signals to the city’s traffic controls using fiber optic cable.

“Today, Annie Glidden is the gateway to the community and what firsttime visitors and parents of potential

NIU students [first] see when entering DeKalb,” DiDiana said.

After interviews with four consultants, St. Charles-based WBK Engineering LLC was selected to lead the project.

Under Illinois statute, the City Council is required to vote on appropriating the motor fuel tax funds.

Council approval also was required to award the project’s contract to WBK Engineering in an amount not to exceed $115,000.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In honor of Arbor Day and to preserve the memory of a former custodian, D. Ryan Tree and Landscape planted a gingko tree Thursday at Lincoln Elementary School.

Darin Ryan, owner of D. Ryan Tree and Landscape, said he has been planting trees on property owned by DeKalb School District 428 for 20 years. Most of the small trees along the perimeter of Lincoln were Arbor Day projects, he said.

“We just try to teach kids the proper ways of maintaining trees and what trees do for people,” Ryan said. “We also teach safety in the classrooms.”

Ryan said that there are five foremen in his business who went through these events when they were young and made them want to be arborists.

Lincoln wasn’t the only school Ryan helped to commemorate Arbor Day. He planted maple trees Thursday at St. Mary School in DeKalb, where he also removed damaged ash trees.

The event also was a way to recognize the roughly 10 years of service by Bob Hongisto, a former custodian at the school in the 1990s who died in January after battling dementia for two years.

First-grade teacher Jean Searls briefly spoke about Hongisto’s impact on the school.

“He did his regular jobs, such as cleaning classrooms, but he did a lot more,” Searls said. “He was such a part of the school. The kids may not

SPRINGFIELD – City Hall is stepping into the statewide debate over freezing property taxes.

Mayors and city leaders from across suburban Chicago are opposing a permanent freeze on local property taxes, a cornerstone of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda.

In an opinion piece provided to The Associated Press in advance of its public release, officials representing more than 150 cities and villages said a freeze would handicap local government and do nothing to address the state’s budget problems.

They also contend the first-term governor’s plan fails to address the impetus of high property taxes: the state’s meager contributions to public elementary and secondary school funding. Experts said Illinois relies more heavily on local property taxes to finance schools than any other state, and that property taxes here rank among the highest in the country.

The Republican’s insistence on the freeze before agreeing to an annual budget plan is among the demands on the Democrat-controlled Legislature that has led to Illinois not having a state budget in more than two years – the longest

Illinois comptroller using tax season revenue to pay bills

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ comptroller said increased revenues coming into the state during tax season have allowed her to release more than $800 million in payments for health care services.

Comptroller Susan Mendoza on Wednesday said the money will go to nearly a dozen managed-care operations in Illinois serving Medicaid patients.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that Mendoza’s office said those organizations can use the money to pay doctors, hospitals and mental health counselors.

In addition to the more than $800 million, the office said it also planned to issue more than $150 million in payments directly to hospitals Thursday.

“If the state of Illinois funded schools, then property taxes would in fact go down,” said Gerald Bennett, mayor of Palos Hills.

Bennett, who also is president of the Southwest Council of Local Governments, pointed to decades past when the state picked up a larger portion of school districts’ tabs, which lightened the load on local taxpayers.

In 1997, then-Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, proposed a plan to reduce property taxes by increasing the state income tax and diverting the new funds to schools. It died in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The current Democratic-controlled Senate has attempted a compromise.

Man gets 120 years for abduction, rape of 3-year-old

WAUKEGAN – A 120-year prison sentenced has been handed to a Chicago man convicted of kidnapping and recording himself sexually assaulting a 3-year-old Mundelein girl in 2013.

Lake County Circuit Judge Mark Levitt sentenced Jose Reyes to four consecutive 30-year prison terms for aggravated kidnapping, predatory criminal sexual assault, and production of child pornography. Levitt convicted Reyes in November after a bench trial.

Before sentencing, the 32-year-old Reyes asked for mercy, saying he “found God.” However, Levitt told Reyes the depths of his depravity “are unmatchable.”

Authorities said Reyes grabbed the girl near the apartment complex where she lived. Video played at the trial shows Reyes molesting the girl in his car before dropping her off about 30 minutes later in a nearby parking lot.

Police arrested Reyes four days later after identifying his car through surveillance video.

Illinois schools work to repair elevated lead levels

DECATUR – A school district in central Illinois is taking steps to remediate areas with elevated lead levels after receiving results of state-mandated testing in six district buildings.

Decatur Public Schools spokeswoman Maria Robertson told the Herald & Review that the water sources found to have any trace of lead were shut off until repairs could be made. The Environmental Protection Agency’s federal standards require action to be taken if lead levels exceed 15 parts a billion. An Illinois law signed in January required schools to test and mandates that school districts notify parents and staff of results above 5 parts a billion.

Katie Miller, whose two daughters attend one of the schools being repaired, said she isn’t too concerned about the situation and that the district handled it well.

“They did the testing to make sure it’s corrected, and I’m comfortable with the fact that they’re keeping up with the testing,” she said. “I’m happy they did the testing and they were forthcoming

However, McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, a Democrat and former state lawmaker, said Illinois’ high property tax burden – ranked fifth or sixth in the nation, according to Martire – prevents communities from attracting residents and business. Franks said allowing local governments to raise property taxes without putting the question to voters ignores “economic realities,” such as falling home values and population decline.

Wheeling pair sentenced in health care scam

CHICAGO – A chiropractor, as well as his father and his brother have been sentenced to prison in a phony-billing scheme that cheated insurers out of nearly $11 million.

A statement Wednesday from the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago said their Wheeling company, Gordin Medical Center S.C., falsely billed carriers for services that were either not provided or that were unnecessary. They also falsified medical records in bids to conceal the scam.

The government’s sentencing memo described the clinic as a “front for false billing.” And it said “patient care was an afterthought.”

All three pleaded guilty to fraud. A judge this week sentenced 46-year-old Vladimir Gordin Jr. to seven years behind bars and 70-year-old Vladimir Gordin Sr. to two and a half years. The 34-year-old Alexsander Gordin received two years.

Tax plan includes relief for some, many unknowns

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s plan to overhaul the nation’s tax code could provide significant tax cuts for the working-class voters who elected him, but the unknowns could end up hurting many of these core supporters of the president. Here’s a look at how Trump’s tax plan could affect families at different income levels:

THE WORKING CLASS

These are the people who have been left behind by an increasingly globalized economy.

Trump’s proposal, a one-page outline short on detail, said he would double the standard tax deduction, which could provide significant relief to working-class families. But Trump’s top economic adviser used some bad math to describe the proposal, raising questions.

Gary Cohn said the standard deduction for a married couple would be doubled to $24,000. But that’s not double. The standard deduction for a married couple is $12,700, so double would be $25,400. Cohn said the deduction would create “a zero taxrate for the first $24,000.”

That sounds great, but very few families making $24,000 a year pay federal income tax, said Roberton Williams, a fellow at the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. In fact, 44 percent of all U.S. households pay no federal income tax, although most pay other taxes.

Trump’s one-page sketch is silent on whether the tax code would still include the personal tax exemption, which allows most families to exempt $4,050 in income for each spouse and dependent child. In big families, this tax exemption can add up. During the campaign, Trump released a tax proposal that would eliminate the personal exemption.

Also during the campaign, Trump proposed getting rid of the “head of household” filing status, which is mainly used by single parents. This filing

THE MIDDLE CLASS

The median household income in the U.S. is about $55,000, although people living in high-cost areas can make much more than that and still feel like they are in the middle class. Doubling the standard deduction – or at least raising it to $24,000 – could provide significant tax relief to middle-income families. But whether they pay more or less depends largely on details that have yet to be released.

One of those pesky details is how Trump will structure the tax rates on individual income.

Trump has proposed reducing the number of tax rates from seven to three – 10 percent, 25 percent and 35 percent. But the administration has yet to determine the income levels for people who would be put in each bracket.

Residents have right to security Frustration is mounting in the community at the violent crime occurring in the northwest part of the city of DeKalb.

Although there are deep-rooted societal problems behind this phenomenon, there also is more that can be done by the city and property owners in the neighborhood to help police catch offenders.

On Monday, a man reported to police that two men attacked him as he walked out of his apartment building in West Ridge Apartments, one of whom hit the victim on the head with an object before they robbed him of his wallet and cellphone. Then they ran off.

A little before noon Thursday, a man with a gun walked into Huskies Discount Tobacco and held up the store at gunpoint and got away.

It looks like the continuation of a trend that the city saw in 2016, with violent crimes increasing 25 percent over 2015.

There are big-picture problems: Lower enrollment at Northern Illinois University has helped create a greater surplus in rental property. Low-income families are moving into these areas, which lack resources that families typically need, such as neighborhood parks and grocery stores. We are not creating enough opportunities for people in poverty.

But there also are ground-level issues that can and should be addressed. Residents in the area complained Monday about inadequate lighting and a lack of security measures such as camera systems in common areas.

Video surveillance footage can be critical in helping police solve crimes. Technology has advanced to the point where these systems can capture high-quality images.

And yet, when that armed robbery occurred Monday outside an apartment at the West Ridge complex, police said there were no cameras.

That needs to change, and not just at West Ridge.

Landlords have a responsibility to the businesses and people who are their customers to keep them safe. Adequate lighting and proper systems for recording what occurs in common areas should be the standard.

In the interest of reducing crime and helping protect residents, the city also should try to find a way to contribute. It’s common for municipalities to offer property owners grants to improve building facades – they could establish a similar program to help assist in upgrades to promote public safety, such as replacing or installing camera systems, upgrading lighting and posting signs to make it known that those systems are present and working.

Criminals are like roaches – they’re pests who don’t like to be seen, and light will send them scurrying.

No matter their income level, all residents have a right to personal safety.

Ambivalence is our enemy in this fight. Now is the time for residents, property owners and government to work together to stem the tide.

Change the voting age to 17 The nearly 500 pieces of legislation that have been introduced around the country this year aimed at increasing voter participation include proposals to lower the voting age from 18 to 17.

Pennsylvania should adopt that change, and the U.S. Constitution should be amended to permit the lower voting age nationwide.

Young people 17 years old probably are more attuned to what’s happening in all levels of government than they’ve ever been. Thus, they should have the right to express their opinion about who should be elected, for municipal offices up to the office of the President.

When the U.S. Constitution’s 26th Amendment was under consideration in 1970 – to lower the voting age to 18 from 21 – some people argued that 18-year-olds weren’t mature and responsible enough to be allowed to vote.

Those arguments proved to be unfounded, just as similar arguments would be regarding extending voting to

17-year-olds.

Actually, 17-year-olds already can vote in primary elections and caucuses in a number of states. The organization FairVote, formerly the Center for Voting and Democracy, which advocates electoral reform in this country, reminds Pennsylvania that the closest states that have taken that step are Maryland, Ohio, Delaware and West Virginia.

Even 17-year-olds in the District of Columbia are permitted to vote in primaries. The important question: Why not in Pennsylvania?

In June 2015, then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton proposed that Americans automatically be registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they chose to opt out, which many might not do, even though they have no intention of voting.

That proposal was welcomed by many of Clinton’s campaign audiences, but a closer look at automatic registration indicates some counterproductive consequences.

The most important is

that voter registration rolls shouldn’t be burdened by those who choose not to exercise the important civic right and responsibility. At the same time, it’s appropriate to remind all registered voters that, at the time they registered, they accepted an obligation to go to the polls – not only for general elections, but for primary balloting as well.

But Clinton’s proposal isn’t the answer to guaranteeing high turnouts. Pennsylvania already makes it easy to register, even without an automatic system of registration.

Many high school seniors still are 17 when they graduate, and it’s at that time when those newly graduated individuals have to make important decisions about their lives, going forward.

With so many electronic communication devices available, young people have access to news and issues that their parents lacked.

Lower the voting age to 17, in Pennsylvania and nationally.

For hope, stick with millennials On college campuses across America, spring semester is coming to an end. This can be an emotional time, I’ve discovered, for those of us who relish the company of these millennials.

No one warned me about this.

Three semesters ago, I agreed to teach at the journalism school that launched me nearly four decades earlier. Whenever someone asks why I was willing to go back to Kent State – to a non-Ivy League school, they usually mean – I explain that I was the first in my family to go to college and that at least a third of my students can say the same. Virtually all of my students hold down at least one – some have two or even three – jobs while carrying a full course load.

They do this so that they can stay in school.

They do this because they have dreams, too.

These are the students filling my life these days. It’s my privilege to help them learn in whatever way I can. Sometimes I also remind them that there was a time when I was one of them, right down to the multiple jobs to make it through.

However, I went to school with the help of low-interest student

VIEWS Connie Schultz loans, government grants and the occasional scholarship. I graduated with barely $2,000 of debt. Some of my students will be my age before they’ve paid off their student debt. I am the grandmother of five, to give you an idea of the depth and breadth of their burden.

We have betrayed this generation in that way, and these millennials will not soon forget that. Remarkably, I seldom hear even an echo of bitterness from them. They are determined to make their way with or without us. As one student with a challenging childhood told me, “I’m the one who got away, and I am not going to waste this one shot.”

So many of us college-educated Americans fail to see how, even in 2017 America, our degrees make us luckier than most. I don’t mean to suggest that life is always better if you go to college, but it sure can change whom you see in the mirror every day. So much of life is a head game.

These students. I’ve known all

along that our time together came with a deadline. This was the deal, from the beginning. Yet here I am, contemplating their departure – many of them are graduating – with the heavy heart of the mother I guess I will always be.

No one prepared me for this part of teaching. Certainly, my colleagues shared stories of the work they love, the students who lay claim to their hearts. But that’s a little bit like listening to someone talking about her marriage. Until you’re in it, you’re just a bystander.

I’m all in now. This semester, I taught feature writing and ethics.

We demand a lot of our students, and they are more than up to the challenge.

If there’s anything I’ve learned about millennials, particularly in the wake of last year’s presidential election, it’s that they’ll match us wit for wit, and most of them have zero patience for hypocrisy.

Theirs is the generation of transparency and accountability, the inevitable outcome of growing up with Google and the rest of the internet at their fingertips.

Week after week, they bring an unsparing eye to a world in which too many in my generation dismiss

them as entitled and self-absorbed.

Nothing will make us irrelevant faster, my fellow baby boomers, than underestimating millennials, who now outnumber what remains of us.

For months now – for about 100 days, to be more precise – I’ve grown slowly but steadily more optimistic about our country’s future, despite the sense of gloom that overtook me on Election Night and sometimes still hovers. As I near the end of this semester, I understand better why that is.

Week after week, I am surrounded by our country’s future journalists, filmmakers and documentarians.

Every time our president tries to mislead the country or demonize our profession, the majority of them are emboldened.

In word and deed, their message is clear: Take heart, America. We are here.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Uber has unfair advantage on taxis

To the Editor: In his article “NIU students present plans to improve downtown DeKalb” (page 9, April 25), Drew Zimmerman quotes Chris Jackson, identified as a “DeKalb management intern,” as saying the “... city staff are working to improve Uber service in the area ... .”

This is exactly the opposite of what should be happening.

DeKalb city code has provisions, very strictly enforced on registered businesses, to protect passengers in ride-for-hire vehicles: The vehicle must carry LY, TX or PT plates; the vehicle must carry $500,000 in commercial liability insurance; the vehicle must have an annual inspection by a certified mechanic, and another by the police department, to insure its safety, and must have company identification, fare schedule, and other signage displayed; the operator must purchase an annual

city business license; each driver must pass a fingerprint background check and motor vehicle record check to receive a DeKalb taxi driver’s license – all of this adds cost to doing business, but all is reasonable regulation, as it goes a long way to making the DeKalb taxi industry safe and reliable.

While these regulations are, as I said, strictly enforced for legitimate taxi businesses, they – and their attendant costs – are not applied to Uber, which is in every way a taxi service.

Instead of working to undermine DeKalb businesses, the city staff should be directing their efforts toward finding these taxis operating outside the law and forcing them to either cease operation or comply with the same requirements that professional taxis gladly meet for the well-being of their passengers.

Ethanol is the best renewable energy source

To the Editor: To answer Pat Vary and the Daily Chronicle Editorial Board (“Don’t close door on wind power, page 12, April 14): We don’t need wind turbines as we have a renewable fuel source that farmers grow every year, ethanol from corn and soy diesel made from soybeans.

Farmers raise these crops every year, and big oil fights farmers all the time.

They don’t want to see a higher blend of ethanol in their fuels.

E85 fuel is made from corn, but very few gas stations will handle E85. They say you don’t get as good gas mileage with your car, but look at the cheaper price E85 sells for.

Even if big oil would blend 15 percent or 20 percent ethanol blend in their fuel, you could save a lot of fossil fuel.

And ethanol burns cleaner.

I know smaller engines have some

problems with ethanol. But there are ways to correct that, or buy recreational fuel.

Just think of all the green corn and green soybeans. Have you heard of photosynthesis, the process that occurs in green plants? Think of all the carbon dioxide taken in and the oxygen that’s given off.

How much oxygen are those steel wind machines going to give off?

Farmers have their ups and downs, and it would be nice if everyone would use the renewable fuels that we have right here.

Support farmers, and do not use all those fossil fuels from big oil.

I just don’t want to see the best farm ground in DeKalb County get ruined.

We really need to stop all kinds of building on this rich soil. Once it’s gone, there is no bringing it back.

Federated Church schedules spring thrift sale DAILY CHRONICLE The Federated Church in Sycamore will host its annual spring thrift sale from noon to 6 p.m. May 5 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6.

The Thrift Sale at The Federated Church dates back to the 1930s as a means to fund mission outreach. ment of Children and Family Services throughout DeKalb County. More than 200 local students each year are able to start school with a fresh supply of necessary items thanks to this program.

Girl Scout Troop 1058, with the help of the Clinton Rosette Builder’s Club, will host a free children’s carnival from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St. in DeKalb, to collect donations to end its yearlong Madagascar philanthropy project.

The indoor carnival will feature 30 kid-friendly booths with games, prizes, crafts, face painting and more.

Troop 1058 is asking every family who attends to bring one or more gently used fleece clothing items (baby-, childor adult-size). All donations will be shipped to Mahatsinjo, Madagascar, where researchers from Sadabe, a nongovernmental organization formed by scientists, will disperse items to poor villagers in need. Monetary donations also are appreciated to help with shipping costs.

Only fleece (polyester) clothing, croc-style shoes and nonfabric rain boots are appropriate to send. These particular types of items keep villagers warm and can dry quickly. This is necessary because of the high altitude of the village and proximity to the rainforest.

An important part of the Girl Scout Law is that Scouts must do their best to make the world a better place.

After meeting with Karen Samonds and Katie Hefferan from Northern Illinois University and learning about Sadabe and how different life is for children in this region of Madagascar, the Scouts felt passionate about trying to help.

The troop of 10 girls has been collecting fleece clothes and crocs, making fleece knot blankets and selling Girl Scout cookies to do what they can. It costs $250 to send each 50-pound bag of fleece over in May. The community carnival is their last big chance to collect more donations and make a difference.

Bears trade 4 picks for Trubisky

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com In a monumental decision that could alter the future of the Bears, general manager Ryan Pace made a shocking move and traded up to the No. 2 spot to select North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

The Bears traded the 49ers their No. 3 pick, third-round pick (67th overall), fourth-round pick (111th overall) and a 2018 third-rounder to move up one spot.

“I didn’t see that coming at all. I was surprised,” Trubisky said on a conference call. “I’m glad they came up and got me at No. 2. I think it shows that they believe in me. And I believe in what Ryan Pace and Coach (John) Fox are doing in Chicago, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

The 6-foot-2, 222-pound Trubisky completed 68 percent of his passes last season and threw 30 touchdowns to only six interceptions for the Tar Heels during his first and only season as a full-time starter.

“I would definitely say my accuracy and my ability to make all the throws on the field, my decision-making, and probably my poise and calmness,” Trubisky said of his traits. “Aside from

From 2014 to ’15, Trubisky threw 11 touchdowns and five interceptions while attempting 125 passes playing behind Marqise Williams. At the NFL

Scouting Combine, Trubisky showed off his athleticism with a 4.67-second 40-yard dash and a 6.87-second threecone drill.

The Bears did not bring Trubisky in for a visit at Halas Hall, but they did work him out.

“We did some pocket movement

and stuff and some dropback, downthe-field throwing action,” he said. “I guess they just wanted to see how I was progressing under center and if I could make all the NFL throws. I think they were impressed with the day I had.”

Trubisky is the first quarterback the Bears have taken in the first round since Rex Grossman in 2003.

In March, the Bears signed Mike Glennon to be their starting quarterback for at least 2017. He received $18.5 million guaranteed, but most of it is being paid to Glennon for the 2017 season, which means the Bears can move on after one season. He is under contract through 2019.

“It is what it is. I’m going to come in and learn as much as I can from Mike and the other veterans on the team,” Trubisky said. “I mean, I’m always going to compete and do my thing and push the guy in front of me and my teammates as well. When given my opportunity, I’m looking forward to take full advantage of it. It’s all about helping the Chicago Bears win and that’s what I’m looking forward to most.”

Trubisky will be Glennon’s backup as a rookie and could be the first quarterback taken in the top five picks since Philip Rivers in 2004 to not start a game in his first season.

Pace couldn’t miss chance to try to land franchise QB

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – On his first day at Halas Hall in January 2015, Ryan Pace mentioned Drew Brees. He had been spoiled at the quarterback position in New Orleans and knew part of his legacy in Chicago would be finding the answer at the most important position in sports.

“The quarterback obviously is a critical, critical position to achieve sustained success,” Pace said at his introductory press conference. “…

I witnessed things with Drew Brees that I have in my mind, that I know why he was successful. And those are ingrained in me.”

On Thursday night, Pace reiterated the significance of making the correct decision at quarterback. “[After the season], I stressed the importance of the quarterback position and the importance of getting it right,” Pace said.

No one will confuse Mitchell Trubisky with a future Hall of Famer such as Brees, but Pace took a hack Thursday night – a big one – at trying to get it right at a position that has long been the problem in Chicago. It was his second massive swing of the ax, trying to chop down the tree that’s been weighed down with the hefty costs of branches of Cutler, Grossman and McNown.

Pace was stuck. This offseason had to be about fixing the quarterback position. He now has two expensive chances – Mike Glennon and Trubisky.

“The only chance you get to add quarterbacks like this is when you’re picking this high in the draft and taking advantage of it,” Pace said Thursday night.

The physical tools are there for the rookie, and Trubisky was thought highly enough that the Browns were rumored to be considering him as the first overall pick.

One NFC scout said that Trubisky “can rip it. He has a lot of tools.” He also referenced Trubisky’s presence in the pocket – something Cutler struggled with – and the former Tar Heel’s ability to move – Trubisky ran a 4.67 40-yard dash.

That same scout acknowledged the lack of experience, too, but that reinforces why Chicago is the right home.

Trubisky can spend a year getting comfortable in the NFL and sitting behind Glennon.

“It is what it is,” Trubisky said.

“I’m going to come in and learn as much as I can from Mike and the other veterans on the team. I mean I’m always going to compete and do my thing and push the guy in front of me and my teammates as well. When given my opportunity, I’m looking forward to take full advantage of it.”

Aaron Rodgers waited three years to start. Philip Rivers waited two.

There is no need for a rebuilding

Bears team to put Trubisky on the field right away.

The cost of the pick – three mid-round picks (one in 2018) – was staggering, especially if the Bears bid against themselves. But if they went a middling 6-10 in 2017, the asking price to get into the top three to take a QB in 2018 could have been a future first-rounder. It’s the cost of trying to land a franchise quarterback.

“If we want to be great, you just can’t sit on your hands,” Pace said.

“If you have a conviction about a guy, you can’t just sit on your hands.”

After the Bears took Trubisky, the Chiefs and Texans traded 2018 firstround picks to get Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, respectively.

Pace couldn’t afford to miss his chance. It’s a franchise-altering move, a risky one to be sure, but when you fall in love with a quarterback, you do whatever it takes to land him.

“He has the potential to be a championship quarterback,” Pace said.

San Francisco was up next, and new general manager John Lynch already was looking good for bringing in such a haul to drop back to No. 3. The 49ers took DE Solomon Thomas from just down the road at Stanford.

For much of the round, it was an offensive draft, although the breakdown

wound up 19-13 on defense, including strings of six and five defenders from the 13th pick onward.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette, who some scouts compared to Adrian Peterson, went to Jacksonville; new Jaguars boss Tom Coughlin is enamored of powerful running backs.

“He’s special,” Coughlin said. “We need playmakers. We need people to put the ball in the end zone. We need to do something about balance. We need to do something about creating a better situation where the quarterback doesn’t have the entire game on his shoulders.”

Wade speaks out as Bulls attempt to stave off elimination

jcowley@suntimes.com Most of this roster hasn’t seen a playoff game, let alone a playoff game that now puts the Bulls on the brink of elimination.

That’s exactly what’s at stake in Friday’s Game 6, however: Win or go home.

A perfect Dwyane Wade moment.

Really, a huge reason that Wade was even added to the roster last offseason.

Sure, the second-option scoring is nice, but at 35 years old and the bearer of three championship rings, Wade is that voice of reason, that teacher of experience.

School is in session.

“You can’t think about one game from elimination,” Wade said, when asked what advice he would be handing out the next 24 hours. “You have to focus on what you can control. You go and watch the film and control how to play

your minutes better, how to be better in your minutes, how to help your team, how to give your all the next outing.”

There was a lot Wade liked in the Game 5 loss in the TD Garden.

Isaiah Canaan held Boston’s most lethal offensive weapon in Isaiah Thomas to 1 for 8 from 3-point range, Robin Lopez was again productive in the middle, and more importantly, the Bulls were in control of the game for 3½ quarters.

A 20-4 Boston run that included two

technicals handed out to Wade and Lopez stained the game in the end, but Wade made sure to let his teammates know that it was a game there for the taking.

“I’m just letting these guys know, and it’s a lot of these guys’ first time in it, that we’re not going to get a call on the road, to our liking,” Wade said.

PHILADELPHIA – With defensive studs everywhere in this draft, NFL teams turned offensive. With an emphasis on quarterbacks.

Hardly stunning in a pass-happy league, except that no quarterbacks in this crop have been highly touted. Yet three went in the first dozen Thursday night, with two surprising trades putting the Bears and Chiefs in position to grab QBs. The Bears paid a whopping price to move up one spot to second overall for North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky.

Kansas City gave up its first-rounder next year to go from 27th to 10th for Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes.

Altogether, eight of the first dozen picks were offensive players, including Houston trading up for Clemson QB Deshaun Watson.

One controversial pick was Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley, who was drafted by Oakland at No. 24. Days before the draft, allegations emerged that Conley raped a woman in Cleveland. He called the accusations “completely false,” and no charges have been filed. Conley was named in a police report that details the allegations, but no information has been forwarded to prosecutors.

The top of the draft was predictable: Roger Goodell got booed, then Myles Garrett was picked first by the Cleveland Browns.

“C’mon, Philly, C’mon,” Goodell said Thursday night amid the boos, not even wincing at the reception. Moments later, he was back onstage announcing the Texas A&M defensive end’s name. Garrett, a junior and All-American considered the best pass rusher in this crop, is the first Aggie selected No. 1 overall.

Rich Harvest Farms awarded NCAAs

jseverson@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – For Jerry Rich, this was 16 years in the making.

After more than a decade-and-a-half of making his first call to the NCAA, the Northern Illinois graduate’s golf club will host it’s first NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships next month at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove.

“Being the host, I made my first call to the NCAA 16 years ago,” Rich said at the event’s media day Thursday at the club. “I had the Big Ten commissioner (James Delany) here playing golf and he said, ‘Jerry, why don’t you go after a National Championship?’ I thought, ‘Sure, why not?’ ” The course, which formally opened in 1999, hosted the NCAA Regional Championships in 2007 and 2014 and is the home course for the NIU golf team.

The women’s NCAA Championships will be held May 19-24, while the men follow from May 26-31.

“The fact that our institution, our region is hosting a national championship, this is something we’ve never done before as a Division I school, so there’s a tremendous amount of cache with that and when you talk about that to our community and our alumni and faculty and students, they get it,” said Brad Hoey, who is in charge of special assignments for NIU athletics. “They understand that is a big deal and they want to be a part of it.”

Hoey said that Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club will foot most of the bill of hosting the tournament, but said that despite the financial challenges the university is undergoing with the state budget impasse, the investment was worth the effort – which includes 54 hours of coverage on Golf Channel.

Rich graduated from NIU in 1961 as a math and physics major, with a minor in earth science. It was his love for earth science that fueled his desire of designing golf courses. He said that his love of golf goes back to the days when he caddied at Butterfield Country Club – hitchhiking his way to the course when he was in middle school and high school during the 1950s.

“It’s huge,” Rich said of the exposure the event will give NIU. “This is the home of the Huskies right here.”

The course has hosted 51 amateur events, according to Rich, and also the

2009 Solheim Cup, a women’s professional event. He said that he hopes to “set the bar” for the event and leave an impression that will keep the door open for the NCAA Championships to return to Sugar Grove. While he touted the sway of the city of Chicago, he said that he hopes to have a large attendance for the weekend portions of the tournament.

“During the week is a real challenge – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – but on the weekends, we expect huge crowds,” Rich said.

The tournament will consist of four

rounds of stroke play – Friday through Monday – and the final three rounds – quarterfinals, semifinals and championship – will switch to match play Tuesday and Wednesday.

“When I designed it, I designed it for match play,” Rich said. “When I was in high school golf, we played match play and one thing I like about match play is you’re always in the match – unless you’re really not playing well. Once that hole is over, whether you win the hole or lose the hole, you’re on to the next hole and it’s another match.”

Early returns positive on middle reliever Swarzak

Anthony Swarzak hasn’t allowed a run in his first seven appearances as a White Sox reliever. Inside that run, the 31-year-old right-hander retired 18 consecutive batters.

Now here’s a streak the former Twins second-round draft pick wants to end: three straight years of going

to spring training as a nonroster invitee, fighting for a job.

Swarzak made the Indians’ Opening Day roster in 2015, but was designated for assignment in May after posting a 3.86 ERA. He would make 17 starts for the Korean League’s Doosan Bears that year, go to camp with the Yankees in 2016 and get called up in June. But he pitched to a 5.52 ERA, spent a month on the disabled

list with shoulder inflammation and was no longer in the Yankees’ plans.

Since signing with the Sox in January, Swarzak has been nothing less than stellar is a middle reliever, giving him hope for saying goodbye to the non-roster invite world.

While posting an excellent strikeout rate of 9.0 per nine innings and an equally strong 2.03 walk rate with the Yankees, Swarzak gave up 10

homers in 31 innings. His homer to fly ball ratio was a lofty 27.8 percent.

So he adjusted.

We’re talking a small sample size, but Swarzak’s 12 strikeouts, one walk and three hits allowed over 91/3 innings are striking. With slightly better velocity, he pitched well from the beginning of spring training through his last Cactus League appearance.

The Cubs take their traveling road show east this weekend when they play the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series at Fenway Park.

This might be the interleague matchup of the season for many reasons: The Cubs are the defending world champions. Many are predicting the Red Sox to bounce back and meet the Cubs in the 2017 World Series.

And of course, a Cubs trip to Boston is a homecoming for Cubs president Theo Epstein, general manager Jed Hoyer and scouting-and-player-development chief Jason McLeod.

The Cubs and Red Sox are joined in so many ways, including the approaches to winning championships.

Those championships were authored largely by Epstein.

Speaking of authors, spring is the best time for baseball books, and we’ll peruse two of them here, both of which should be of interest to Cubs fans.

If you’re going to read any book about “the plan” Epstein and his crew undertook to make the Cubs champions in 2016, it should be “The Cubs Way,” by Tom Verducci, the baseball writer from Sports Illustrated.

Verducci was given unprecedented access – the type of access any beat writer would love to have – as he chronicled the Cubs’ way to a championship.

The book’s chapters go back and forth between each of the seven games of last year’s World Series and stories of “the plan” itself.

There is a color photo of manager Joe Maddon’s lineup card from Game 7 with Maddon’s various and quirky notations, including one that reads “DNBAFF.” That one is definitely not safe for work, nor is it suitable for this newspaper, so you’ll have to read the book.

Verducci is a gifted storyteller, and the unbridled access allowed him to flesh out the secret way Epstein and Co. scouted first baseman Anthony Rizzo for the Red Sox – they tried to throw off rival scouts by not watching Rizzo from the third-base side, which is where scouts can get a better look at a left-handed hitter.

As much as Epstein has earned his reputation as a GM and president

who made use of advanced metrics, the theme running through “The Cubs Way” is that Epstein and Hoyer actively sought “character” people in addition to productive players on the field.

“Epstein wanted (scouting) reports that went on for pages, like the Russian novels his father had him read as a boy,” one passage reads.

“Epstein had to have this information. It wasn’t hard, measurable data. But it was information nevertheless, and if Epstein was going to build a team around high-character, high-impact position players, he wanted as much of it as possible.”

Fear not, stat heads, if you love your numbers, “Smart Baseball” by Keith Law is for you.

Law, a senior writer for ESPN Insider, has been at the media forefront of baseball’s statistical revolution.

The strength of this book is that it fits all the arguments and counterarguments of the new and old ways of thinking about baseball into one volume.

There is no doubt which side Law is on, and his stridency can be off-putting, as he repeatedly attacks old-school GMs and members of the media for being stuck on the notions that pitcher wins, batting average and RBIs are illustrative stats.

Law also forcefully asserts that there is no such thing as a “clutch hitter.” Clutch hitting, yes, but no clutch hitters. You’ll want to dig into that chapter.

Law is right in many of his assertions, but in fairness to my brothers and sisters in the Baseball Writers Association of America, most of us have come around to the concepts of wins above replacement, on-base percentage, weighted on-base average, on-base plus slugging and walks plus hits per innings pitched when it comes to filling out ballots for postseason awards and the Hall of Fame.

Not fully, but old ways die hard, and they are dying. And when you’re a crusader like Law, you have to keep shouting from the mountaintop.

Here is where I wholeheartedly agree with Law as someone who has tried to weave sabermetrics into my stories without losing the casual reader: Understanding the newer stats of today makes it more fun and rewarding to follow baseball, not less.

Obviously, rodents are not humans, but that said, many studies of humans have shown vinegar reduces the glycemic response and the glycemic index of sugars and carbohydrates.

Vinegar itself may help lower blood sugar, but the mechanism of action is not understood.

Along those lines, a 2004 study looked at 11 patients who had insulin resistance and 10 patients who had Type 2 diabetes. Compared with a placebo, apple cider vinegar improved insulin’s ability to bring sugar out of the bloodstream and into the cells of the body.

Also, apple cider vinegar decreased the rise of both sugar and insulin when the subjects were given a bagel and orange juice – normally insulin- and glucose-spiking foods.

Lastly, in a Swedish study of 12 healthy males given bread both with and without white vinegar, those who consumed the vinegar showed a lowering of blood sugar and insulin. Those who consumed the vinegar also felt full more quickly.

So the benefit of apple cider vinegar may be in vinegar itself, not anything specific to the fermentation of apples. But because the studies didn’t all concern humans and weren’t conducted long-term, it’s difficult to make a conclusion about the benefits of apple cider vinegar or any other vinegar.

Dear Doctor: What are the benefits of apple cider vinegar? I hear about it on social media, but I don’t understand how vinegar can lead to weight loss or help me control my blood sugar.

Dear Reader: My mom is a big proponent of apple cider vinegar. She likes to put it on her salads and vegetables, or just drink a spoonful of it. I am somewhat dubious about her claims of its health benefits, but I also am skeptical of my own resistance to accepting her belief.

Vinegar is created by the fermentation of many natural substances, including grapes, sugar cane, rice and, in this case, apples. The fermentation process produces acetic acid of various concentrations. With apple cider vinegar, the acidity is fairly high – at a pH of about 3 on a scale of 0 to 14 (a pH of 1 to 7 is acidic).

Apple cider vinegar also contains many polyphenols, or plant-based compounds. These antioxidant compounds have been shown to decrease blood pressure in laboratory animals, improve the ability to metabolize sugar and have beneficial effects on cholesterol.

Now let’s analyze the potential medical benefits of apple cider vinegar. In one interesting study, researchers removed the ovaries of mice to increase their oxidative stress and to mimic menopause; then they fed the mice a high-cholesterol diet. One group of mice was given apple cider vinegar, while another group was not. The mice given apple cider vinegar had improvements in their cholesterol; a decrease in the oxidation of LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol; and an increase in the antioxidant glutathione. However, there were only 10 mice in each of the groups, so the numbers don’t carry much power.

In a French study of rats fed a high-fat diet and apple cider vinegar, researchers found a decrease in blood sugar and benefits in all cholesterol numbers – triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.

I’m 15. I lost my dad two months ago. I found him when I got out of the shower. He had overdosed on heroin.

Heroin controlled Dad’s life ever since I was little, but that never stopped me from being me. My family has had it pretty rough, but that never stopped me from being me, either.

I can’t process the thought of losing my dad completely. I’m scared without him. The mental picture comes back to me randomly throughout the day. I can’t take it anymore.

I know he’s at peace now, but I still feel as if it’s my fault he’s dead because I took a shower and wasn’t with him. I feel as if it should have been me, not him. He had just gotten out of jail a month before he died.

I can’t keep crying myself to sleep. I need a way to cope, and right now I feel as if I’m at rock bottom and can’t return. I just want to be normal like the kids I go to school with. Why can’t I be a normal teen? – Rock Bottom Teen Dear Rock Bottom: I am so sorry for what you have been going through. You are a normal teen, and in my opinion, you are much more resilient than you think you are.

You have had a terrible shock, and in addition to the normal grieving process, you may be suffering from survivor guilt. Your father did not die because you took a shower.

He died because he had a heroin addiction he couldn’t conquer.

It is very important that you talk with a grief counselor and possibly join a grief support group. If your family can’t arrange counseling for you, please talk with a school counselor or your clergyperson.

There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel, and you’ll start seeing it once you get some professional help.

Dear Abby: I’ve been reading your column for years, but never thought I’d have to write to you. This year my aunt hosted a family dinner and did a wonderful job – everything was delicious.

There was only one problem. She was upset (everyone at the table could see it and feel the tension) because I ate “too much” meat and she didn’t have enough for leftovers.

Some bridge players can get like that, thinking in convoluted ways instead of in straight lines. In today’s deal, for example, how should South play in seven hearts after West leads the club king?

First, note South’s four-heart jump advance of his partner’s takeout double. Remember that a bid of three hearts would have promised nothing (although North would have assumed his partner had six or seven points).

So, South’s jump suggested 9-11 points, which is what he had! Now North, envisioning a slam, used two doses of Blackwood. He would have felt much more comfortable using Roman Key Card Blackwood, because he would have known about South’s heart king-queen. (South would have replied five spades to four no-trump to show the trump queen and two key cards, an ace and the trump king, or two aces.) Still, North was confident that his partner would not have the club ace and king, so took a slight chance on the heart suit in jumping to the grand slam.

Declarer has 11 top tricks: two spades, five hearts, three diamonds and one club. He cannot establish an extra winner anywhere, so must ruff two clubs on the board to bring his trick total up to 13. South should win with his club ace, ruff a club high, cross back to hand with a trump, ruff another club high, draw trumps and claim.
