Have you ever been affected by domestic violence?

Barry Schrader My column title last week, “When you hit a brick wall in life,” couldn’t cover all the unfolding events and emotions one experiences after a life-changing event no one could predict.

The CT brain scans my wife, Kay, underwent at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital showed that before she suffered a stroke April 14 in New Glarus, Wisconsin, other earlier stokes had occurred, but small in comparison and often called transient ischemic attacks.

I had noticed some quirks in behavior, such as her freezing up when playing the piano during chapel one recent Sunday at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

Another time, she forgot where she was, but chalked it up to the aging process.

Now, I realize one should seek a doctor’s advice if these unusual episodes occur.

Last week, Kay was transferred from the Madison hospital neuroscience stroke unit to Marianjoy Hospital in Wheaton, an acute stroke care facility where she is undergoing evaluation and intense therapy.

When I say intense, I mean six sessions a day working on speech, memory, mobility, eating and swallowing, occupational, psychological and physical therapy. Two doctors in and out, along with many other staff members checking on her multiple times a day. She now has a heart-monitoring device to signal any unusual activity.

I am exhausted just following her from floor to floor in the hospital.

But it is so important for family members to stay involved and to learn about aphasia and what it means when helping a person heal over the long haul.

They even have a full-sized car inside a room on the third floor for patients and family to practice the safe way to get in and out of the passenger seat. Shower cabinets duplicating what people might have in their homes is another tool they offer for people to learn how to bathe safely.

There is little time to feel sorry for yourself or your loved one, just a crash course on

Each day, Kay Schrader visits the chapel at Marianjoy Hospital in Wheaton, where she and her husband, Barry, attended Protestant services Sunday. how you must respond to this and preparing you for what might lie ahead.

For Kay, the major problems are loss of memory, speaking ability and comprehension, as her physical strength has returned quickly, except for some motor skills on the right side that need tuning up.

The most emotional and uplifting moment for me came when we attended a chapel service Sunday, and as we sang “Amazing Grace,” I suddenly heard Kay quietly singing a couple lines of the chorus along with the rest of us.

You cannot imagine the joy that brought to my heart, knowing her memory of things past wasn’t totally erased, and more will be coming back in the days ahead I am sure of it.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – An unattended Mobil self-service gas station is coming to the site of a former station, left vacant for about 20 years after storage tanks leaked underground, requiring remediation.

Four fuel islands with 10 pumps will be included in the project at 1020 N. First St., as well as a small utility building for an employee who will manage the station, full video surveillance, fully landscaped perimeters and an ATM. On Monday, Rockford-based Kelley Williamson Co. was granted a special use permit for the station, which will be on the southeast corner of First Street and Hillcrest Drive, across the street from an active Phillips 66 station and diagonally across from an abandoned station.

First Ward Alderman David Jacobson voted against granting the permit, which was recommended to the DeKalb City Council without opposition during a Planning and Zoning Commission hearing last month.

Jacobson said he’s concerned with what can be done with the abandoned gas station in the future.

“There’s no way that corner can support three gas stations on a residential street,” he said during Monday’s meeting. “Approval of this project would effectively and permanently blight the corner across the street, because other than a gas station, there’s nothing else you can do across that street.”

City Attorney Dean Frieders said tanks leaked underground at that site, too. He said the city is exploring solutions for the property, including work-

ing with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the state fire marshal and an environmental consultant to land a grant to remediate the site.

“If that occurred, it would likely involve razing that site and eliminating the gas station there and fully remediating the soil,” Frieders said. “We’re working through the liability and ownership aspects of that.”

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane, whose ward the intersection is in, said remediation can be expensive.

“Once [IEPA] goes into action to determine how bad a site is polluted, they will determine remediation,” Finucane said. “I know of some sites that have had to remove all of the dirt in the area and replace it, which can get pricey.”

On the proposed self-service station site, the IEPA issued a letter indicating

no further remediation is necessary after years of corrective efforts and testing.

A similar self-service station exists on Peace Road. Finucane said he has not heard of any problems of security or maintenance at that location.

“They’ve also got security cameras, and people can pull in at any time, day or night, and use their credit card to get fuel,” Finucane said. “Stations like this have popped up in Chicago, and there’s also one in Waterman, but I’m not aware of any issues there either.”

Finucane said that he welcomes the new revenue generator.

“There have been other sites that were gas stations at one time but have been put to other uses, so I welcome someone else willing to invest in the community,” Finucane said. “That’s always a good thing.”

DeKalb airport considers lowering fuel costs

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In the interest of drawing more jet traffic, DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport is looking to lower the sale price of its jet fuel on a trial basis.

Although airport staff can set the price without DeKalb City Council approval, they still presented the idea to the council Monday.

“We were approached last year about an idea of reducing jet fuel to a 50cent profit margin, thereby increasing demand and increasing the volume of jet traffic at the airport,” Public Works Director Tim Holdeman said. “The idea is we would make up that lower margin by increasing the volume, which would need to increase four times.”

Holdeman said that any loss from this trial run would be limited to $20,000,

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb City Council has approved a plan for Kishwaukee Country Club to get a $2 million face-lift starting this year.

Council members approved a development agreement and rezoning of the property Monday. The construction project includes the building of a new clubhouse at 1901 Sycamore Road.

Waivers also are being sought under the Unified Development Ordinance to allow landscaping, parking lot design, subdivision platting and continued use of the well water system.

The new clubhouse would be an 8,500-square-foot, one-story structure

– about half the size of the existing clubhouse – with a full basement. Construction could start after Labor Day and take about six months, although some utility work can be tackled over the summer, club President Steve Irving said.

Irving said he has worked on developing the project for close to 10 years, and it would not require any financial incentives from the city.

Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker said the 100-plus-year-old country club is an icon to the community, and that an important enhancement such as this could help economic development.

The project was approved 7-0. Third Ward Alderman Michael Marquardt did not vote.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office arrested Silva on Tuesday on a warrant set at $500,000 for each case, according to court documents.

Sheriff Roger Scott said Tuesday that the Kirkland Police Department received a tip from family members of one of the victims and opened an investigation in February, and that his department joined the investigation in March.

As a result of the investigation, another child younger than 13 came forward to allege sexual contact with Silva, police said.

Scott said those are the only known victims.

Silva’s next court date is 9 a.m. May 19.

DeKalb man charged with sex exploitation of child

SYCAMORE – A 34-year-old man who police said made sexual advances on a 15-year-old girl was freed on his own recognizance Wednesday.

Police said James J. Chasteen, who rents a space in a house in the 100 block of John Street, asked the girl, who also lives there, for pills, then asked her for sexual favors, according to court documents.

According to court documents, when police arrested Chasteen at the house Tuesday, he told detectives he

knew of the incident, and when asked whether he’d made comments that could be considered sexual, he said, “Definitely.”

Chasteen is charged James J. with domestic battery Chasteen and sexual exploitation of a child, all punishable by up to a year in jail if he’s convicted.

Chasteen is not allowed to live in the house, nor is he allowed contact with the teen, as conditions of his bond.

He’s scheduled to be back in court at 9 a.m. June 16.

A: Freeman McFarlin Potteries was in business in California from 1951 to 1980. Gerald McFarlin had a pottery in El Monte for several years before Maynard Anthony Freeman joined him in 1951.

Freeman designed some of the whimsical animal figurines that also were made into salt-and-pepper shakers, sugars and creamers, and other items. The animals he designed are incised with his signature, “Anthony.” Later, the company opened a factory in San Marcos, California. In 1980, International Foods bought Freeman McFarlin and the El Monte factory was closed. The San Marcos factory was sold to Hagen Renaker, which continued to operate it until 1986. The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Trustees of an Illinois state retirement board on Wednesday terminated the pension that imprisoned former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert received for his nearly six years of service in the Illinois General Assembly.

The General Assembly Retirement System’s board of trustees voted, 5-2, to end Hastert’s $28,000 annual pension. Hastert, 75, is serving a 15-month prison term in a hush-money case that stemmed from his sexual abuse of students when he taught at an Illinois public school more than 35 years ago. The Republican pleaded guilty in 2015 to federal bank violations and is scheduled to be released Aug. 16.

Hastert’s attorneys declined comment on the decision Wednesday. Hastert has the option of appealing in state court, and the Chicago Tribune reported that Hastert attorney Mark DeBofsky wrote a letter to the board last month saying Hastert intended to appeal any termination or reduction in benefits.

CHICAGO – The administration of Gov. Bruce Rauner said it wants a judge to decide whether state employees who were improperly hired under former Gov. Pat Quinn should keep union contract job protections.

Rauner’s office said in a statement Wednesday at least 36 employees who were improperly hired for Illinois Department of Transportation positions remain employed with the state. The Rauner administration said they can’t be fired because of collective bargaining protections. The office of Rauner, a Republican, said a motion seeking a decision on the issue was filed this week.

The update comes after a report Monday by a court-appointed watchdog charged with looking into patronage hiring at the transportation department detailed how friends and relatives of top Democrats were hired under Quinn, even as many had little or no experience.

19-year-old man convicted in 11-year-old’s death

EDWARDSVILLE – Prosecutors said a southern Illinois judge has convicted a 19-year-old man of murder in the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy.

Madison County prosecutors said Ta’Mon F. Ford of Alton was convicted Tuesday after a bench trial in the 2016 death of Ronnell Jones. Prosecutors said Ronnell died at a hospital after he was shot once in the back outside a youth center in Alton.

The state’s attorney’s office said it believes Ford was confronting individuals in an ongoing social media dispute when he fired a 9 mm handgun from a vehicle before it fled the scene Jan. 13, 2016.

They said the boy who died didn’t have any connection to the dispute and was standing in a group of young people when the shooting happened.

Prosecutors said that according to witnesses, the 34-year-old Tillmon reached across his passenger seat and fired multiple shots before driving off.

The 43-year-old Munoz was able to steer his truck to a stop on the shoulder of Interstate 88 near Oak Brook. He died later at Elmhurst Hospital from three wounds.

Authorities said GPS and I-Pass records place the tow truck Tillmon was driving Friday at the scene of the shooting.

Fiancee Michele Salerno said Munoz was headed home when shot.

It wasn’t immediately known if Tillmon has a lawyer.

Card draw determines school board race winner

ROCKFORD – Despite the casting of 517 votes to determine who would sit on the Rockford school board, it took the drawing of a card to decide the winner.

Anthony Dixon on Tuesday drew the queen of clubs from a 52-card deck to break a tie and win the contest to represent Rockford’s Subdistrict A on the school board. Brandi Brown drew the five of hearts.

Brown and Dixon were two of eight write-in candidates in the April 4 race.

They were separated by five votes the day after the election. Election authorities had two weeks to certify results so they can include any ballots mailed on or before Election Day. Illinois’ election code dictates that ties be broken “by lot.” Options include short straw, high card or a coin flip.

Boeing beats 1Q profit forecasts but revenue falls

CHICAGO – Boeing topped expectations for first-quarter profit, but the aerospace giant’s sales fell short of forecasts, and the shares fell in Wednesday-morning trading.

Chicago-based Boeing Co. said Wednesday that it earned $1.45 billion in the first quarter. Excluding nonrepeating gains, the profit came to $2.01 per share.

The average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was $1.91 per share.

Revenue was $20.98 billion. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $21.44 billion. Boeing blamed the disappointing sales number on delayed deliveries of commercial and defense aircraft. The company delivered 169 commercial planes in the quarter, down from 176 a year earlier.

WASHINGTON – Dismissing concerns about ballooning federal deficits, President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed dramatic tax cuts for U.S. businesses and individuals – outlining an overhaul his administration promises will spur economic growth and simplify America’s tangle of tax code rules.

His proposal, a one-page sketch short on detail, would reduce the top corporate tax rate by 20 percentage points and allow private business owners to claim the new lower rate for their take-home pay.

It would whittle the number of tax brackets for individuals from seven to three, lower the top tax rate from 39.6 percent to 35 percent and double the standard amount taxpayers could deduct.

It would eliminate the estate tax and reduce taxes on investments, typically paid by the rich. It would further reduce the tax burden for the wealthy by eliminating the catch-all alternative minimum tax, which takes an additional bite out of high-income Americans.

More lower-income Americans would pay no tax at all, and there would be relief – still undefined – for families with child care expenses.

The plan does not propose any budget cuts or tax increases that might offset the lost revenue, a choice that alarms some fiscal conservatives in Trump’s party who have spent years railing about the dangers of deficit spending.

It also does not fully embrace tax proposals backed

by Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, an essential ally if the president is to make good on his promise to deliver a tax overhaul that creates growth and brings jobs to struggling parts of the country.

“He understands that there are a lot people who work hard and feel like they’re not getting ahead.”

The president’s proposal marks a rehash of an economic theory popularized in the 1980s. Trump officials essentially argue that benefits from the tax cuts will trickle down from higher profits for companies into stronger pay raises for workers and greater consumer spending. This expected surge in growth, in theory, would be enough to keep the federal budget deficit from shooting upward.

Some economists agree, but most budget experts have said it’s unlikely.

“Unfortunately, it seems the administration is using economic growth like magic beans – the cheap solution to all our problems,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

“But there is no golden goose at the top of the tax cut beanstalk, just mountains of debt.”

Trump’s plan resembles aspects of the tax ideas he campaigned on last year. The right-leaning Tax Foundation

estimated that, even after accounting for growth, the Trump campaign plan would put a $2.6 trillion to $3.9 trillion hole in the budget over 10 years.

“We know this is difficult,” Cohn said. “We know what we’re asking for is a big bite.”

Despite the details provided Wednesday, the proposal leaves significant open questions that could affect taxpayers and the economy.

The administration has yet to decide the incomes at which the new personal tax rates – 10 percent, 25 percent and 35 percent – would apply, meaning that some Americans might see their taxes increase if they get bumped into a higher bracket. It also has yet to spell out how the plan would stop wealthier Americans from exploiting a lower corporate rate to reduce their own taxes.

Administration officials intend to finalize details with members of the House and Senate in the coming weeks for what would be the first massive rewrite of the U.S. tax code since 1986.

The possibility of a deficit increase, unacceptable to some Republicans, means that Trump would need to attract Democratic support to make the overhaul permanent.

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration told lawmakers Wednesday it will apply economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, as an extraordinary White House briefing served to tamp down talk of military action against an unpredictable and increasingly dangerous U.S. adversary.

President Donald Trump welcomed Republican and Democratic senators before his secretary of state, defense secretary, top general and national intelligence director conducted a classified briefing. The same team also was meeting with House members in the Capitol to outline the North’s escalating nuclear capabilities and U.S. response options to what they called an “urgent national security threat.”

After weeks of unusually blunt military threats, the joint statement by the agency chiefs said Trump’s approach “aims to pressure North Korea into dismantling its nuclear, ballistic missile and proliferation programs by tightening economic sanctions and pursuing diplomatic measures with our allies and regional partners.” It made no specific mention of military options, although it said the U.S. would defend itself and friends.

The unprecedented meeting in a building adjacent to the White House reflected the increased American alarm over North Korea’s progress in developing a nuclear-tipped missile

that could strike the U.S. mainland. A flurry of military activity, by North Korea and the U.S. and its partners on and around the divided Korean Peninsula, has added to the world’s sense of alert.

While tensions have increased since Trump took office, they’ve escalated dramatically in recent weeks as American and other intelligence agencies suggested the North was readying for a possible nuclear test. Although such an explosion hasn’t yet occurred, Trump has sent high-powered U.S. military vessels and an aircraft carrier to the region in a show of force, while the North conducted large-scale, live-fire artillery drills, witnessed by national leader Kim Jong Un, earlier this week.

On Wednesday, South Korea started installing key parts of a contentious U.S. missile defense system that also has China and Russia concerned.

America’s Pacific forces commander, Adm. Harry Harris Jr., told Congress on Wednesday the system would be operational within days. He said any North Korean missile fired at U.S. forces would be destroyed.

“If it flies, it will die,” Harris said.

The Trump administration has said all options, including a military strike, are on the table. But the administration’s statement after briefing senators – all 100 members were invited – outlined a similar approach to the Obama administration’s focus on pressuring Pyongyang to return to long-stalled denuclearization talks.

Motorcycle safety is a matter of life and death Crashes involving motorcycles can be a particular danger each spring: Drivers fall into bad habits over the winter, when they mostly don’t have to worry about sharing the road, and motorcyclists still are brushing off their skills after months of unuse.

Driving a motorcycle comes with risks – it’s part of the thrill. But there is a simple way to make sure the consequences of enjoying the hobby don’t turn fatal: Wear a helmet.

Wearing a helmet is not required in Illinois, but there’s no arguing the benefits.

Across the state, of those who died in a motorcycle crashes in 2014, the most recent time frame for which numbers were available, only 28.8 percent were wearing helmets, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“Most, if not all, motorcycle deaths have a component of head trauma,” McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski told Shaw Media last week. “If there’s any potential for protection from fatal head injuries, helmets are an answer.”

Although helmets can prevent a crash from becoming deadly, an ounce of prevention goes a long way. That responsibility lies with all drivers.

IDOT’s “Start Seeing Motorcycles” campaign encourages drivers to stay alert and use extra caution around motorcycles.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation asks automobile drivers to allow more following distance for motorcycles; reserve judgment, understanding motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose and not to be reckless or show off; and complete lane maneuvers slowly, not expecting motorcyclists to always be able to dodge out of the way.

For motorcyclists, local experts recommend they know their bikes and how to use them. Keep all equipment well maintained, and update your skills by taking a refresher course, such as those offered each spring at Harper College.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation also encourages riding defensively and within your skill limits, being as conspicuous as possible with bright clothing, decals and headlights on, and never operating a motorcycle while impaired by alcohol or other drugs.

Actually, that last one goes for all drivers.

Everybody on the road can do their part to help prevent motorcycle crashes, which too often can be fatal.

Subcharge on loans should be done away with Millions of Americans have fallen behind on their student loans. Data from the U.S. Department of Education reveal that 42.4 million people owed $1.3 trillion in federal student loans by the end of 2016, and the average amount owed per borrower had increased by 17 percent since 1993.

A rule issued by the Department of Education in 2015 said defaulting borrowers who quickly got their federally guaranteed student loans back on track could not be hit with a 16 percent collection fee.

However, that rule was rescinded last month, offering a potential windfall to 26 private companies that help run this government program.

Fortunately, the withdrawal of the rule generated so much pub-

lic outcry that the companies that are now allowed to charge the fee – known as guarantee agencies – quickly announced they won’t actually charge it.

If that sentiment remains, it was the correct response, because most of those who would be subjected to a collection fee are already struggling with debt, and increasing it would only make their problem worse.

As it is, a relatively small share of borrowers would be affected if the new regulations are enforced, according to MarketWatch. Starting in 2010, all new federal student loans were issued by the Department of Education, which doesn’t charge collection fees to borrowers who quickly agree to make good on their defaults.

As a result, students who have taken out federal loans in the past few years need not worry about any potential increase in fees.

However, those who received bank-based loans from the Federal Family Education Loan Program before it was discontinued in 2010 could face higher fees if the guarantee agencies change their minds.

Clearly, student debt is a mounting problem. The law gives defaulting borrowers one shot to rehabilitate their loans – and even arrange payment terms based on their income.

The point of that is to let them fix the mistake they made by defaulting. It defeats the purpose to add a huge surcharge.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Unwilling to concede defeat and move on, Dean then cited in his defense three Supreme Court precedents that don’t mean what he claims they do. None of the cases even concerned “hate speech,” let alone licensed restrictions on such speech.

Two of the decisions struck down restrictions on free speech, cutting against Dean’s case. The third decision, as Volokh patiently explained after Dean invoked it, allowed restrictions only on “fighting words”: “personally addressed face-to-face insults that are likely to start an imminent fight.”

Dean has a history of ill-considered remarks that embarrass other liber-

als. One peculiarity of his latest ones is that this botched foray into constitutional law was entirely unnecessary.

If Dean wanted to defend not giving Coulter an opportunity to speak on campus, he could have just said that Coulter adds little of value to any debate, and students and administrations should therefore not invite her to give speeches.

Many people would beg to differ with that argument – Coulter’s career shows that an enormous number of people are very interested in what she has to say – but it’s one that raises no constitutional problem.

Nobody is arguing that any college in America has a constitutional obligation to listen to Coulter.

Dean didn’t have to bring up the Constitution at all to make his case against her.

(I should note that Coulter once kindly blurbed a book I wrote.)

And what if Dean were right about the Constitution? In that case, legislatures would have the authority to deliberate about what kinds of speech

were sufficiently hateful to be restricted and what kind of restrictions should be put in place, and authorities would then implement any resulting laws in a deliberate manner. Those laws would, presumably, not simply license riots against certain speeches or the use of threats of riots as a veto on those speeches.

There’s a worthwhile debate to be had over how universities should exercise the wide discretion that they unquestionably have over which speakers to host.

That debate implicates important questions about what the mission of a university should be.

But thinking through those questions is harder and less satisfying than choosing a side in a fight and claiming the Constitution for it.

Exclusionists actually make immigration more popular

If you watch only Fox News or take Attorney General Jeff Sessions seriously, you’d think we’re being swamped by illegal immigrants who are setting off a crime pandemic and stealing Americans’ jobs. None of that is factually correct, but it is deeply believed by the right wing of the GOP. It therefore should come as an unpleasant surprise to those anti-immigrant voices that the more visibility they get, the less the public agrees with them.

The Wall Street Journal reports on the latest NBC-Wall Street Journal poll: Six in 10 Americans said immigration helps the nation more than it hurts – up 6 points since the last sounding, in September 2016. Onethird of people in the survey said immigration hurts more than it helps. ...

Both parties ... showed increasing support for immigration. Among Democrats, those who saw immigration as beneficial grew 10 points, to 79 percent, between December 2015 and

April of this year. Among Republicans, it grew 9 points, to 37 percent; 53 percent of Republicans viewed immigration as harmful to the U.S. Among independents, the share viewing immigration as beneficial grew by 16 points since late 2015, to 63 percent.

This goes hand in hand with polling showing that the wall is unpopular and that 90 percent of voters favor a path to citizenship if the immigrant learns English, pays taxes and a fine, and is working. In other words, “amnesty” has never been more popular.

Perhaps President Donald Trump shouldn’t have made opposition to illegal immigrants the cornerstone of his presidential campaign.

His administration’s over-the-top assertions about illegal immigration, obsession with a useless and expensive wall and increased deportation of noncriminal illegal immigrants turns out to be wildly unpopular.

Perhaps voters now realize the logical conclusion of Trump’s tirades (economic disruption, loss of civil liberties, human suffering). It may be that seeing the faces of actual Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

beneficiaries who live in fear of being booted out of the country has disturbed them.

Maybe by raising the visibility of the issue, Trump has also reminded voters of immigrants’ contributions.

Ilya Somin writes: “Immigration restrictions interfere with the free market more than almost any other U.S. government policy. They literally prevent millions of people from freely seeking jobs and engaging in other market transactions. Free migration throughout the world could potentially double world gross domestic product and grow the economy more than almost any other policy change.

“Many of those economic benefits will accrue to native-born Americans who hire immigrants, buy the goods they produce, or engage in other transactions with them. Many products we purchase every day are cheaper or have better quality because of immigrants’ work. Many would not even exist at all without them. The world is not a zero-sum game where natives must lose out in order for immigrants to gain – or vice versa.”

We’d like to think that Americans, at least in general, recognize how critical immigration is to our prosperity. (“On average, immigrants are more likely to start businesses than native-born citizens, which creates many potential benefits for the latter.

Over 80 percent of the highest-achieving high school science students in the U.S. are immigrants or children of immigrants – many of whose parents came to the U.S. on H1B visas that Trump seeks to curb.”) Trump and right-wingers who have never heard of the lump-of-labor fallacy seek to construct a false narrative to explain real hardship caused by a whole variety of issues, including automation, a skills mismatch and education inadequacy.

We would hope the poll is a positive sign that Americans grasp that “the world is not a zero-sum game where natives must lose out in order for immigrants to gain – or vice versa.”

Howard Dean is ignoring the “law of holes”: If you’re in one, stop digging.

The former Democratic governor of Vermont and former chairman of the Democratic National Committee waded into the controversy over the cancellation of a speech by Ann Coulter at the University of California at Berkeley – a cancellation prompted by fears that protesters against her will turn violent. (After a few twists and turns, it appears that the speech is still off.)

Dean said that the First Amendment does not protect “hate speech”: an extravagantly false statement.

Many legal experts explained the point.

Eugene Volokh, a libertarian professor at the UCLA School of Law and an expert on free speech, pointed out that “hate speech” is not even a legal concept in America. “U.S. law has just never had occasion to define ‘hate speech’ – any more than it has had occasion to define rudeness, evil ideas, unpatriotic speech or any other kind

GENOA – Neither Sycamore softball coach Jill Carpenter nor Genoa-Kingston coach Mike Lauer can remember the last time the Spartans topped the Cogs on the diamond.

A six-run sixth inning by Sycamore put a game that was within striking distance out of reach, and the Spartans broke through with an 11-1 win that will have postseason implications.

“I think our girls were ready to play,” Carpenter said after her team snapped a six-game losing streak. “I think the schedule we play, our conference games and our nonconference games, prepare us. I just said to them we have not beat Genoa in a long time.

It’s nice to come out and beat a local school. They know a lot of the kids and stuff like that, and it’s nice to come out on the winning end of that.”

Both the Cogs (16-8) and Spartans (6-11-1) are in the same subsectional, and will play their regionals at either Belvidere or Woodstock North. The Spartans also have beaten Burlington Central and lost by a run to Belvidere, both of which are in the subsectional as well.

Carpenter said the win was big for seeding, which will be voted on May 9 – two days after the Spartans play another subsectional team in Woodstock North.

“That’s huge for us because I think our record is deceiving,” Carpenter said. “I’m willing to put my team up against a lot of people in 3A and think we can give any team a pretty good battle. If you look up and down our schedule, we’re playing against teams that are ranked in the top 25, getting votes in 4A. It’s tough because you aren’t supposed to take your conference into consideration when you seed, but I can’t avoid it either. So to come away with wins against people who are voting with and against us, at least we can say, ‘Hey, look, we’re 2-1 right now.”

Sycamore led, 5-0, after three innings and entered the sixth up four.

Mya Lee started off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Haley Trela singled her to the plate and went to second on the throw home, then scored on a single by Amanda Swedberg – who also went to second on the throw home. Faith Reynolds added an RBI single to push the lead to 8-1. Lexi Gordon walked and Hannah Mizgalski singled to load the bases, then Kayleigh Reifsteck drove in a run with a walk. Lee was hit by a

Mizgalski, who also went 4 for 4 and scored twice, finished off her three-inning relief stint with a scoreless sixth to preserve the win.

Reynolds said the win is a confidence booster for the Spartans, who reached double digits for the third time this year.

“I think we all know we all can hit now,” Reynolds said. “We had that big inning and I think our momentum will carry into our next games.”

Reynolds was 2 for 4, drove in three runs and scored twice. She also pitched the first three innings for the Spartans, allowing one run and two hits.

The Cogs pushed home their run in the third when Lexi Howie singled and scored on a two-out double by Ashley Peterson.

“I was feeling like, ‘Hey, let’s get fired up and get after it,’ ” Lauer said.

“We just didn’t step up to the challenge tonight. And it’s a pretty meaningful game going down the road. They’re in our subsectional, and this was an important game for seeding.”

By the numbers: The Spartans outhit the Cogs, 16-3. Trela had three hits and scored twice with an RBI, and Lee was 2 for 3.

Beyond the stats: The Cogs used

three pitchers, with Kayti Beauchamp pitching twice – she was the first reliever in the game in the third, and came back into the game in the sixth.

Olivia Simmons started and went two innings, Beauchamp pitched the third and Ashley Clemente pitched from the fourth into the sixth. Clemente was scoreless in her first two innings before running into trouble in the sixth.

They said it: “Hitting is contagious, and it goes both ways,” Carpenter said.

“Mya starts it with a hit in the inning and we end up batting around, and I think when you put that pressure on early in the inning ... you’re looking for good things to happen.”

Up next: The Spartans are back to Northern Illinois Big 12 play with a crossover game against Ottawa Thursday at home, while the Cogs resume Big Northern Conference play Thursday with a trip to Winnebago.

Late start, early deficit don’t stop Barbs

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Despite a late start and early deficit, DeKalb routed Glenbard South, 6-1, Wednesday at home.

Senior Hanna Hickey had two goals for the Barbs and came close to a hat trick, shooting her last attempt just wide of the net.

Glenbard South (6-8) scored in the second minute of the game at the 38:50 mark, as sophomore Sam Schutte put in a header off a free kick, but it was all Barbs after that.

“We were able to execute what we needed to execute in the first half, including that set play off the free kick,” Glenbard South coach Kevin Berner said. “Our best scorer knows how to finish.”

“Once we scored those goals, we started relieving some stress and started getting back into it and playing a lot better.”

DeKalb (10-4) tied the game on a goal by Darian Lucas at 19:20 in the first half, her first of two goals.

Hickey put the Barbs ahead for good with a goal at the 6:42 mark later in the half.

“Once we scored those goals, we started relieving some stress and started getting back into it and playing a lot better,” Hickey said.

In the second half, Lucas scored

her second goal at 27:09 and Hickey knocked in her second at 17:12.

After that, the rout was on as Bella Bettner padded the lead with a goal at 8:41 and Maddie Hill added another less than two minutes later at 7:04.

“Once we get one, we really get into the game and really just start connecting with each other and just playing better than we did before,”

said Hill.

“It’s a total team effort with this group,” DeKalb head coach PJ Hamilton said. “Different kids are getting on the scorecard each and every night and we are finding a little bit of success with it.”

By the numbers: Freshman Olivia Olson had two assists for the Barbs.

Beyond the stats: Hickey shot at an open net with four minutes left to go in the game, but the shot went wide, missing her chance for a hat trick.

They said it: “It was frustrating, but my teammates can finish the job, too. It’s fun,” said Hickey on barely missing out on a hat trick.

Huskies sweep doubleheader against Valparaiso DAILY CHRONICLE

It ended with two wins for NIU. The Huskies overcame an early deficit in both games and swept Valparariso in a nonconference doubleheader, 7-4 and, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at Mary M. Bell Field.

In Game 1, Valparaiso (24-18) opened with an early 4-0 lead, but the Huskies (24-18) scored three in the bottom of the first and then added four in the fourth. NIU pitcher Tara Thacker was brilliant in relief, earning the win by pitching 62/3 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Kayti Grable was 1 for 1 with a two-run home run and two walks, Abby Howlett added a solo home run and Jenny Van Geertry was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. In Game 2, the Huskies trailed, 2-0, after the top of the first but scored a run in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the second

and never relinquished their lead.

Neely named MAC Freshman of the Year: NIU’s Raven Neely was named

the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and was one of two Huskies honored by the league.

Along with Neely, senior Adey Osabouhein earned first team AllMAC honors.

“I’m incredibly proud of Raven and Adey for receiving those honors,” NIU coach Tanya Mahefu said.

“They deserve it. Raven’s had an impressive season. She works hard and I expect good things from her going forward. Adey has done well for the

past two years. She’s one of the people that have came in and built the foundation for this program.”

Neely, the first MAC Freshman of the Year in program history, is 17-5 overall and 10-2 in conference at No. 2 singles and has won seven in a row and 11 of her last 12 matches.

Osabouhein, a first team All-MAC honoree in 2016, is 11-5 at No. 1 singles.

The pair are also the Huskies’ No. 1 doubles team and are 13-2 on the year and 7-1 in conference play.

Morrow came off the bench and put in eight first-half points.

The Bulls took a two-point lead into the final quarter thanks to a Jimmy Butler three at the horn, as the separation between the two teams almost was nonexistent.

That is until with just under six minutes left in the game.

Thomas finally woke up, giving Boston a 96-89 lead, and after a Butler miss, Al Horford stretched it out to nine with two free throws.

The Bulls’ meltdown continued with a technical foul on Dwyane Wade and then Thomas hitting two more free throws to stretch it to a 12-point lead and continue the 17-4 run.

BEARS

Best scenario for Pace, Bears is to trade down NFL mock drafts are really nothing more than an exercise in folly and arrogance.

After all, even general managers, personnel directors, head coaches and team owners can’t know for sure what they’re going to do with their picks until they are on the clock because their decisions are based on all that comes in front of them or comes to them, with the exception of the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, so how can I pretend to know what the Bears or anyone else is going to do?

All we can do is talk to as many people as possible who are involved in the process, chart out all that information and then give you our best educated guess.

Even in that, however, there is a wrinkle. My best friends in the GM and coaching ranks all know each other, and it is often prudent, at times even necessary, for them to run misdirection plays on each other.

For instance, my buddies Sam, Oscar and Moses all know I’m talking to all of them and they are picking 14, 15 and 16, respectively.

All have prospects they like that

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush they don’t want the others to take, so they may tell me they don’t like those players to keep the competition down on them and claim they do like others to encourage the other clubs to look closer at them.

It’s not lying. It’s playing the game, so an additional challenge is to rate how straight each of my buddies and sources is being with me.

I have no idea what Bears GM Ryan Pace is going to do with the third overall pick in the draft, but I can tell you some things I’m pretty sure he’s thinking about based on what I’m hearing from both sources close to him and other folks around the league.

I think Pace really likes Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and would take him at No. 3 if his team were just a bit closer to being competitive.

But with glaring needs at safety,

cornerback, five-technique and tight end, and possibly a serious need at left tackle and wide receiver, I believe he has deemed Watson a luxury at No. 3 he can’t afford.

While Alabama tight end O.J. Howard would be fascinating and exciting and would fill a significant need, I’m hearing Pace and company believe their need for playmakers on defense – which is the top strength of this draft – is great enough that is where they would most likely look at No. 3.

However, because the defensive playmakers run 12 to 15 players deep at the top of this draft, and because there most likely will be a team or three looking to trade up either for a quarterback or one of those defenders, I’m hearing there is a decent chance the Bears could be a team to move down.

Pace confirmed Wednesday there are exploratory calls of that nature taking place.

I think the top three players on the Bears’ board might be Solomon Thomas, Jamal Adams and Malik Hooker, and I think it’s most likely all three will be available when the third pick

comes around.

But I’m also hearing it’s quite possible two of them could still be available at, say, 12 where the Bears could trade down to if the Browns are as desperate as I’m hearing they are to trade up and grab Mitchell Trubisky after using the top overall pick on Myles Garrett.

If they can make it, that deal most likely would cost the Bears the third overall pick and net them the 12th pick, two second-round picks – 33 and 52 – and a fourth-rounder.

If the Bears could make the trade, still get either Thomas or Hooker at 12, which I think they could, and set themselves up to pick 33, 36, 52 and 67 on the second day, that would be a great first round.

Draft trades are impossible to force or predict, but in his third draft for the Bears, it’s time for Pace to make a little magic, and that deal would certainly qualify.

BOSTON – Nikola Mirotic knew exactly how it looked.

He and his Bulls teammates held the early 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, seemingly having the top-seeded Celtics gasping for air going back to Chicago.

“Then they started playing like we were early in the series,” Mirotic said Wednesday.

But even with it all knotted up at 2 going into Game 5, Mirotic liked the calm being felt throughout his locker room.

“We came here to win,” Mirotic said.

“No one thought different.’’

Well, Boston did.

Thanks to a complete Bulls meltdown in the final six minutes of the game that included two technical fouls, Boston moved the Bulls to the brink of elimination, beating them, 108-97.

“Talk is cheap, man,” Jimmy Butler said of the situation the Bulls were in.

“We’ve been doing too much talking all year. You’ve just to go out there and play

basketball. It’s the postseason. Ain’t too much to talk about this time of year.”

Like they did in the first two games in the TD Garden, the Bulls seemed unfazed by the emotion of the home crowd, jumping out to an early 12-6 lead in what was an ugly six-plus minutes of the opening quarter.

Yes, Boston’s poor shooting (2 for 11 from the field) helped, but Fred Hoiberg’s Game 4 switch of going Isaiah on Isaiah was what really stood out.

Seldom-used Isaiah Canaan picked up right where he left off, finally giving the Bulls a point guard that made life difficult for All-Star Isaiah Thomas since Rajon Rondo (fracture right thumb) left the series after Game 2.

Boston grabbed the lead back by the end of the first quarter, but Thomas was 0 for 3 from the field with only four points.

They remained alive by the half, as well, down just 52-50, while Canaan held Thomas to seven points on 1-for-5 shooting, scoring six points of his own.

Canaan wasn’t the only surprise guest for the Bulls either, as Anthony

SPORTS BRIEFS Raiders bring running back Lynch out of retirement

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Marshawn Lynch is coming out of retirement after agreeing on a two-year deal with the Raiders that paved the way for a trade to his hometown team in Oakland.

Lynch passed a physical Wednesday and agreed to a restructured two-year contract. Those were the final steps needed before Seattle could trade his rights along with a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Raiders for a 2018 fifth-rounder.

NFL Network said Lynch would get a $3 million base deal this season, with a chance to make an additional $2 million if he rushes for at least 1,000 yards.

Lynch had been slated to make $9 million this season if he came out of retirement. With Seattle unwilling to pay that amount and Lynch only wanting to play for the Raiders, finalizing a trade was simple once Oakland was able to re-do Lynch’s contract.

Predators beat Blues in Game 1

ST. LOUIS – P.K. Subban had a goal and two assists and Vernon Fiddler scored with 5:05 left, sending the Nashville Predators to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series Wednesday night.

The Predators lost Kevin Fiala to an ugly

leg injury in the second period and blew a 3-1 lead before Fiddler poked a loose puck

by Jake Allen in the third. It was the fifth career playoff goal for the 36-year-old Fiddler, who did not play in Nashville’s first-round sweep of the Blackhawks.

Colin Wilson and Filip Forsberg also scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne made 27 saves.

Beal, Wall lead Wizards past Hawks for 3-2 series lead

WASHINGTON – Bradley Beal scored 27 points, and John Wall added 20 points and 14 assists, leading Washington to a 103-99 victory over Atlanta in Game 5 on Wednesday night for a 3-2 series lead in the first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 29 points, making a career high-tying five 3s, and 11 assists. But after his basket from beyond the arc pulled Atlanta within 10199 with 70 seconds left, Wall responded with a 21-foot pull-up jumper.

A miss followed from Paul Millsap, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, but after Wall’s jumper was off the mark, the Hawks seemed to waste too much time at the other end and the buzzer sounded.

The host has won every game in this series so far.

Lester tagged for 5 earned in loss

bmiles@dailyherald.com Sooner or later, Jon Lester will get a decision to go his way in 2017.

It wasn’t to be Wednesday night in PittsburghfortheCubsaceleft-hander.

For the second straight start, Lester allowed five earned runs, this time in a 6-5 loss to the Pirates at PNC Park.

Lester finished April with a record of 0-1 with an ERA of 3.68 in 5 starts.

The Pirates jumped on Lester for two runs in the first inning and three in the second, and a Cubs comeback fell just short.

The Cubs wound up taking two of three in the series. They enjoy an offday Thursday in Boston before beginning a big interleague series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.

In two of his early no-decisions, Lester was victimized by a lack of run support or late-inning bullpen implosions. He has now endured two straight rough outings. He gave up five runs at Cincinnati last Friday before his teammates bailed him out in a 6-5, 11-inning victory.

He wound up throwing 107 pitches in 52/3 innings against the Pirates, giving up 10 hits, while walking two, striking out five and giving up two home runs.

Last year, Lester went 19-5 with a 2.44 ERA, finishing second in Cy Young Award balloting.

“I don’t think he was really pleased with his last outing,” manager Joe Maddon said of Lester on his pregame radio show Wednesday. “So I expect him to be really kicked in right now.”

The Cubs probably don’t have too much to be worried about when it comes to Lester. He will sit in the dugout this weekend when the Cubs face his former team, the Red Sox. Maddon flip-flopped the starting rotation, beginning with the series in Cincinnati. He moved Lester ahead of Jake Arrieta, hoping to take advantage of Lester against the Pittsburgh lineup and allowing Arrieta to pitch in Boston.

The first half of the equation didn’t quite work out for the Cubs.

There was nothing wrong with the Pirates’ slugging percentage against Lester. Josh Harrison led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer, and Francisco Cervelli later drove in a run with a double.

Phil Gosselin and Andrew McCutchen each had RBI doubles in the Pirates’ second, and Josh Bell hit a long homer to center in the sixth.

The Cubs got a two-run homer from Anthony Rizzo in the eighth. It was Rizzo’s fifth homer of the season.

On the road trip, he has four homers and 12 RBIs. “We had the right guys up at the right time, and it did not work out,” Maddon told reporters after the game.

CHICAGO – Jose Quintana brought some ’tude to the ballpark Wednesday, Avisail Garcia brought his redhot bat, and the White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the struggling Royals with a 5-2 win for their fourth victory in a row.

It was the first win of the season for Quintana, who was the first Sox pitcher to make three straight starts of at least five innings with zero run support since 1967. Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier gave him two-out, backto-back RBI doubles against righthander Nate Karns in the first, and Garcia broke a tie with a 437-foot homer to center, his fourth of the season, in the sixth.

The All-Star lefty was determined to keep the somewhat surprising Sox on a roll, and they claimed their fourth straight victory to improve to 11-9.

was at 99 pitches, that he would give in to the lefty’s wishes and let him pitch the seventh if the game was tied because Renteria wanted him to have a chance for the decision.

When Garcia put the Sox in front, Renteria turned it over to relievers Dan Jennings, Tommy Kahnle, Nate Jones and David Robertson, who combined for three scoreless innings.

Jennings extended his scoreless streak to six appearances, and Robertson collected his fifth save and 76th as a Sox, passing Terry Forster for sixth all time.

“To sweep these guys early in the season, that’s really important for us,” Quintana said.

Garcia, who is batting .373 with 17 RBIs, also made a good charging catch and almost turned it into a double play. No. 9 hitter Leury Garcia, who had three hits in each of the previous two games, homered in the seventh for a fifth run.

What’s going on here? The Sox, in a rebuild, are playing good baseball.

The Sox are running everything out and playing a mostly clean brand of ball.

NIU to honor Cliff Alexis, ‘the Stradivarius of the steelpan’ DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University’s Cliff Alexis is retiring, and he’s going out on a high note.

The longtime co-director of the world-renowned NIU Steelband – and master of the art of building steel drums – will be feted during a concert in his honor beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Cliff Additionally, Alexis Alexis will be presented with an honorary doctoral degree during the NIU Graduate School commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. May 12 at the NIU Convocation Center.

Friends and dignitaries from around the world will be in attendance for the steelband concert, including the Honorable Anthony Phillips-Spencer, ambassador from Alexis’ native Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, where the steelpan was invented and remains the national instrument.

“It is not an exaggeration to state that Mr. Alexis is the Stradivarius of the steelpan,” Paul Kassel, dean of the NIU College of Visual and Perform-

Alexis began playing the steelpan at age 14 in his homeland. By 1985, when he joined the NIU School of Music staff, he was a road-seasoned musician and talented educator pursuing a mission.

DeKalb High School to present ‘Ragtime’ DAILY CHRONICLE DeKalb High School students have been busy rehearsing “Ragtime” for several weeks and have been drawn to the show’s Tony Award-winning music and timeless themes.

Based on E.L. Doctorow’s celebrated novel and set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, “Ragtime” weaves together three distinctly American tales – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and – ultimately – what it means to live in America.

“The music is absolutely magical, and the way that it portrays the story’s themes is unparalleled by any musical that I’ve heard,” senior Katie

Hagaman said in a news release. “It’s gorgeous. I love it.”

Mark Jesmer, a junior who plays Younger Brother, agrees.

“The message of ‘Ragtime’ is universal – finding your purpose and finding unity,” he said in the release.

Director Travis Erikson considers the music in “Ragtime” to be of the best in the musical theater genre.

“The melodies are enduring,” he said in the release. “They have an authentic quality that is connected to the historical period.”

“Every song is transformative. The audience will see a part of the character’s journey in each song they sing,” Erikson said in the release.

Several of the cast members have been in past school productions and are active members of the Music Department. However, with its large and diverse cast, “Ragtime” brings many newcomers to the DHS stage.

“I enjoy that there are a lot of people in the cast who have previously not

been involved in the musical,” Jesmer said in the release. He hopes that this show will encourage more students to be involved in the extracurricular music and theater activities.

KVAL meetings are held at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in the Club Room at Hy-Vee, 2700 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore. Meetings are open to the public.

KVAL presents a challenge to member artisans throughout the year, alternating with an artist demonstration at each monthly meeting. KVAL is committed to promoting local artists and dedicated to the development of upcoming artists in the Kishwaukee Valley area.

On May 4, KVAL will participate in Give DeKalb County, a 24-hour fundraising event to help build the community, encourage philanthropy, connect donors to organizations and raise awareness of how nonprofits are serving the county.

The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery is hosting the Student Art Show through May 11.

The Student Art Show is a juried exhibition of works by students enrolled in art classes during the spring semester at Kishwaukee College. The show was juried by Barry Treu, director of education at the Freeport Art Museum.

The art gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery is free and open to the public.

The show includes works in a variety of media, both 2-D and 3-D. Local students who have works in the show are: DeKalb: Kate Ahlgren, Gina Andrade, Adam Bruner, Bill Davison, Rogelio Godinez, Jessica Langston, Jeremy Moss, Bryce Ray Parker, Josh Quick, Armani Searcy, Mary Short and Gretta Ward; Earlville: Alyssa Ohme; Genoa: Maggie Springer; Kingston: Courtney Wille; Malta: Ilene Moore; Sandwich: Krystal Swanson; Sycamore: Kody Aughenbaugh, Keegan Callahan, Joel Dodson, Barbara Johnson and Tara Ozehowski.

Awards were announced at an opening reception held April 19. Keegan Callahan of Sycamore received Best in Show; Rogelio Godinez of DeKalb received Best 2-D-Photo/Digital/Design; Tara Ozehowski of Sycamore, Best Drawing/Painting; Joel Dodson of Sycamore, Best 3-D; McKenzie Cullen of Oregon, Honorable Mention; and Kate Ahlgren of DeKalb, Juror’s Choice.

Enjoy chocolate in moderation Dear Doctors: I have read about the health benefits of dark chocolate for the brain and the heart, but that it must contain about 80 percent chocolate to be effective. How much sugar or additives (nuts, fruit) can be added before chocolate loses its health benefits?

Dear Reader: Ah, chocolate, a food that so often inspires a passionate response. The fact it also offers a host of proven health benefits seems almost too good to be true.

A number of studies over the years have linked cocoa, the basic building block of chocolate, to cardiovascular benefits, cancer prevention, a lower risk of stroke, better blood flow to the brain, lower blood pressure and improved insulin metabolism.

Cocoa also contains important minerals, including zinc, iron, magnesium and potassium.

With your question about the percentage of cocoa in a chocolate product, you’ve zeroed in on the vital detail. At what point does chocolate go from being just another kind of candy to becoming a beneficial food?

Let’s start with a bit of background.

Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans, which are the seeds of the cacao tree, a small, shade-loving evergreen in the tropical regions of the Americas. These beans are high in a substance known as flavonols – sometimes also referred to as flavonoids.

Flavonols, which fall into the category of antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties.

The catch is that cocoa – or pure chocolate – is quite bitter. That means sweetening agents and milk solids are added to make it more palatable. Depending on the percentage of cocoa in any particular preparation, the result is a product that contains varying degrees of sugar and calories. And while cocoa has proven health benefits, sugar definitely does not.

When it comes to the health benefits of

Sixty percent cocoa is widely considered the minimum when looking to a chocolate product for health benefits. But don’t rely solely on the words “dark chocolate” when looking at the label.

In the U.S., a product with as little as 35 percent cocoa may be designated as dark chocolate. European chocolates set the bar a bit higher, with a minimum of 43 percent cocoa. And if you’re one of those who love white chocolate, we’re afraid there’s some bad news. White chocolate is made from the fat of the cocoa bean and contains no actual cocoa at all.

And now, amid all this amazing chocolate news, a bit of a reality check.

A group of scientists from Harvard who reviewed the data from 24 studies pinpointing various health benefits associated with cocoa found the average dose of flavonols ingested by the test subjects was 400 milligrams a day. Turns out, that’s the equivalent of (are you sitting down?) eight bars of dark chocolate, or 30 bars of milk chocolate a day.

If you want to match that intake, cocoa supplements are available that skip the sweeteners and fillers that make chocolate so delicious. But if you’re going to add actual chocolate to your diet, limit it to 2 ounces a day, and go with as high a percentage as you will actually enjoy.
