Police chief placed on administrative leave

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police Chief Glenn Theriault has been placed on administrative leave, city officials confirmed Tuesday.

Mayor Ken Mundy said he was not certain exactly when Theriault was placed on leave.

He said the decision was made by City Manager Brian Gregory.

“Brian’s working with this very closely and he knows the procedure that’s in place,” Mundy said. “I really don’t know that much about it because it’s a manager-administrative issue.”

Gregory also confirmed that Theriault was on leave but declined to provide any other details. He reiterated that Theriault remained the police chief.

Theriault could not be reached for comment

Tuesday.

Gregory declined to comment on who was acting as chief of the department in Theriault’s absence. Jim Winters is the department’s deputy chief.

Sycamore’s council-manager form of government delegates the ultimate authority on personnel decisions to Gregory as city manager, although he reports to the City Council.

City code says the police chief can be removed with or without cause if the city manager and four-fifths of council members agree.

Theriault joined the Sycamore force in January 2015 as its chief. He had been in law enforcement for about 20 years at the time and signed a three-year contract with a starting salary of $107,600.

He had been a commander at the Elgin Police Department before his appointment.

Residents concerned about safety after man beaten outside apartment

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A day after a man was beaten and robbed outside his home in the West Ridge Apartments, residents of the area said they weren’t surprised – or happy.

Police said an NIU student was hit on the head and robbed as he left his apartment in the 900 block of Ridge Drive. He was taken to the hospital and treated for a head injury.

The victim told DeKalb police that he was approached by two men about 10:20 p.m. Monday, and that one of them hit him on the head with an object. DeKalb Police Cmdr. Bob Redel said the victim’s wallet and cellphone were stolen, and that the suspects were last seen running east toward the neighboring Amber Manor Apartments.

Redel said the victim was unsure of the weapon used, but that he was pretty sure it was metal. He said officers are looking into leads and reviewing available security camera footage. The victim’s apartment did not have security cameras, he said.

“We’d love for every business and every apartment to have cameras,” Redel said. “At the very least, it’s going to help us solve crime, but it could go a long way in deterring crime, too.

“It’s money, though. That complex has been there a long time.”

People living in the area said they are aware of the crime problems in the area, which includes many apartment buildings and fraternity boardinghouses.

“I think there’s been six break-ins within a mile of the house, so you have to make sure everything is locked up,” said Brandon Simes, a senior at Northern Illinois University. He and junior Oscar Mendoza, members of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity across the street from the apartments, were in the area Tuesday afternoon.

Both agreed the neighborhood is not always safe.

“We were on the tiki deck [of the fraternity] one time and heard gunshots,” Simes said.

Harouna Amadou, an NIU graduate student who lives in the area, said there used to be a security guard on the West Ridge Apartments premises late at night, but not anymore. A lack of surveillance and insufficient lighting has made the area unsafe, he said.

“It’s been really bad – even recent-

ly we’ve had people trying to remove parts from cars,” Amadou said. “We need enough lights and cameras so that when bad people see them, they’ll be afraid.”

Last month, DeKalb police requested help from the public in finding suspects in a string of catalytic converter thefts from parked cars, many of which occurred in the northwest region of the city.

Redel said this is the third robbery in the neighborhood since January – one occurred on the same block, and the other in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive.

“Obviously, we’ve had issues in that whole area with robberies and shootings – I mean, Kimberly [Drive] is two blocks away,” he said.

He called the three robberies in the neighborhood “on par” in a year-overyear comparison.

“One’s too many,” Redel said.

He said this time of year, as the weather warms, more robberies start

to happen. He said more patrols are done, and that overtime is being approved for officers to “flood the area.”

Simes said that although police patrol the area pretty well, students sometimes receive emails that 911 is down, followed by a crime alert minutes later – an awful feeling.

Redel said sometimes witnesses are the only ones who can help solve a crime.

“If you see something suspicious, you’ve got to call us,” he said. “You see it all the time in Chicago – people are afraid to talk. We don’t want that to be us here.”

He said businesses are generally helpful in turning over security footage and giving eyewitness accounts.

Sexual abuse survivors speak out at annual Take Back the Night event

DeKALB – Wounds. Like sharks sensing blood in the water, sexual predators feed on them. That message came out several times during the eighth annual awareness-raising event Take Back the Night.

“Sexual assault is a soul-injuring thing,” Mary Ellen Schaid, executive director of Safe Passage, said Tuesday before the speak-out portion at First Congregational United Church of Christ.

When wounds heal and turn into battle scars, they can become something downright powerful.

“It takes guts to come back from it,” Schaid continued. “But a lot of people do.”

“The people who commit these crimes depend on the fact that we have a hard time talking about it,” said Marj Askins, Safe Passage legal advocate for sexual abuse.

Then she turned the lectern over to several people both anxious and eager to talk about it.

Local residents, emboldened by a room of about 40 people and their palpable support, told stories of emotional abuse. Manipulation. Unwanted pregnancies and miscarriages. Cycles of sexual assault, often reoccurring just as a wound was close to fully healing.

Then there’s the guilt of survivors who didn’t report abuse, or waited too long for a rape kit to be accurate, let alone legally binding.

After the tears fell, each speaker urged the audience that they’re not to blame, and that victims can come back stronger and help others.

“We all have the strength inside of us to get through anything,” survivor Dawn Jaques said.

Men who’ve survived abuse spoke, as did Caprisha Shamira Williams of DeKalb, who has cerebral palsy. She drove home the point that anyone can be a victim.

“It happens to us more than you’d think,” she told the crowd. “For someone to tell you, ‘You should be happy someone would care about you, and want to touch you. Because you’re disabled, and you can’t have regular sex, so this is what you’re going to get.’ It’s devastating, to be a woman, to be intel-

Safe Passage legal advocate ligent enough, and to know what I want with my body, and for someone to tell me I should be happy with whatever attention I can get.”

The event stepped off, as always, from the church, with dozens of marchers hoisting signs with phrases such as “No means stop, yes means go,” and “Consent is sexy.” The march turned back just shy of downtown, and on the way back, Safe Passage board member Tarryn Thader marveled at the bravery the young men and women show

at the event. She joined the board last year, just before her first Take Back the Night.

“The strength these survivors have, and to hear them share their stories of vulnerability is just overwhelming,” she said.

She hopes their bravery inspires other survivors to speak up.

“Those who go it alone suffer,” she said.

Mark Meier, a retired teacher who is a Kiwanis member along with Thader, said myriad misconceptions surround sexual assault.

“It’s not just in bad neighborhoods, and it’s done by people you wouldn’t think could ever do it,” he said.

That’s why pounding the pavement, encouraging the quiet to speak up, is so crucial, Thader said.

“If we don’t start at the grassroots and make people aware, we’ll never get to where we want to be,” she said.

Born: May 31, 1938; in Ewing, NE Died: April 17, 2017; in DeKalb, IL Phyllis E. Eraas, 78, of Sycamore passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Monday, April 17, 2017 at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

She was born May 31, 1938 in Ewing, Neb. to Raymond and Meta (Hofer) Freeman. She grew up in Tilden, Neb. but moved to Illinois in 1953. She was a 1955 graduate of DeKalb High School. She married Alvin R. Eraas on July 5, 1963 in Sycamore. She worked for a local insurance office, then Sycamore Wholesale, and later retired from Duplex Products. Mom was a kind, friendly, and down-to-earth soul. She always thought of and put other people first.

Through the years she enjoyed creating ceramics, collecting antiques, bird-watching in her backyard, and baking (which her family eagerly appreciated). She had more of a green-thumb than the rest of us and enjoyed tending to her plants, flowers, and garden. She enjoyed keeping in touch with family, friends, and monthly luncheons with her former co-workers. As she became less active, she often watched golf and bull riding on television. She’ll be missed by her family most of all as someone who would always be there – whether to offer an idea, give advice on a recipe, or simply to listen.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Richard Eraas (Tanya Wohlford) of Chana, Michael Eraas of Sycamore; two grandchildren, Mitchell Eraas, Marina Eraas; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Joseph Freeman; and sister-in-law, Zella Freeman.

Special thanks to mom’s neighbors Bob & Janet Harris, Keith & Lorri Knox, and Chuck & Jennifer Diehl and their families for all their friendship and assistance through the years.

Mom wished for her funeral and graveside services to be private. However, the family would greatly appreciate hearing from those who knew her.

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County prosecutors have requested DNA testing of a DeKalb woman charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend in November.

In court documents filed Tuesday, the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office asked a judge to compel Kela Moss, 27, of DeKalb, to submit a buccal swab, which obtains a DNA sample from inside a person’s cheek.

If freed, Moss had sought to live at Safe Passage, a shelter for victims of do-

mestic abuse, where she had been receiving counseling.

Brown’s family has disputed claims that Moss was acting in self-defense.

Brown was out on bail at the time of the murder. He was charged Oct. 14 with robbery and domestic battery for allegedly hitting Moss, pulling her hair and stealing her keys, purse and phone, according to court documents.

Brown was arrested again Nov. 4 after police found he violated a court order to stay away from Moss and her apartment.

SYCAMORE – A proposal to expand B & C Kennels dog boarding and breeding facility in rural Mayfield Township is set for a public hearing Thursday.

Owners Christie Hardt and Robert DeCosta requested an amendment to their special use permit to allow new operations at the kennel, including more boarding, breeding and the sale of bred and imported puppies.

The kennel at 6367 E. Clare Road operates

Police said they found Brown dead in the apartment he shared with Moss shortly after midnight Nov. 14. An autopsy found Brown had been strangled.

Physical evidence collected during an investigation by DeKalb police, including a shoelace recovered near Brown’s body that might have been used to strangle him, were sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for testing, according to the state’s motion.

The lab requires the buccal swab for evidence testing, according to the motion.

Moxie building sold for downtown project

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A $1.2 million redevelopment of the vacant Moxie building downtown should begin within the next few weeks, its new owner said Tuesday.

Cohen Barnes, president of SundogIT, bought the building at 230 E. Lincoln Highway last week for $310,000.

Barnes said he plans to use it as the new office for his computer service business. He said the redevelopment project will happen in part because of as much as $400,000 in tax increment financing funds from the city.

“As far as I know, everyone downtown is excited and welcoming us with open arms,” Barnes said. “I’m doing everything I can to generate traffic for downtown DeKalb and will use the building to support NIU, as well.”

He plans to host an art exhibition

by students from Northern Illinois University’s School of Art and Design during ARTigras, an annual city art celebration, at 5 p.m. May 6.

As for increasing traffic, Barnes said he hopes his business, currently at 444 E. Hillcrest Drive, can bring customers downtown during lunch hours, making it viable for more restaurants to be open.

“The whole idea is to get enough traffic that all restaurants want to be open, which is going to be an attraction,” Barnes said. “There will be more people that will shop here and come to downtown for lunch, so we will also have additional sales tax revenues.”

SYCAMORE – A 52-year-old Kirkland man is in DeKalb County Jail on two warrants totaling $1 million after police say he had sexual contact with two children younger than 13 years old.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office

Rochelle Graff, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2017 at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center following a brief illness.

The family would like to thank the medical professionals who provided exemplary support and compassionate care throughout her illness.

Born in Mayberry Township, IL on April 9, 1925, the daughter of John and Hazel (Mayberry) Tyler, Rochelle married Daniel Graff on May 8, 1948. Rochelle was an office manager and human resource professional in a variety of settings throughout her long career.

Hers was a life well and independently lived. She grew up on a farm in southern Illinois and drove a horse and buggy to school for much of her elementary education. In the final years of her life she took great joy in seeing pictures of family, especially her great-grandson, on cellphones. She was an avid bowler participating on leagues at Elgin Lanes and, later, bowling virtually as a member of a Wii bowling league at Colonial House. In 1944 she was granted a War Emergency State Teachers certificate and taught in a one-room school. More recently she was happy to help others learn how to drive their personal motorized vehicles. She loved spending time with her family, took exceptional pleasure in decorating for Christmas, and seldom was without a book to read. She will be remembered for her expressive eyes and her infectious laugh.

She was an active member of the Genoa Legion Auxiliary for many years. As a member of the Colonial House community, she enjoyed being a member of the welcome committee and helping new residents get acquainted. She loved meeting new people and making new friends.

The House voted, 62-55, Tuesday to allow state-employee health insurance or Medicaid to cover abortions. Medicaid currently covers abortions in limited cases. The vote capped a two-hour debate and coincided with the Illinois Women March on Springfield for a “progressive agenda.”

The measure is sponsored by Chicago Democratic state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz. She called it an issue of fairness and said it also ensures abortion remains legal in Illinois if the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion is overturned.

Republican state Rep. Peter Breen of Lombard said Medicaid-funded abortions do not qualify for federal match so would cost Illinois an extra $60 million a year.

U.S. to brief senators on potential N. Korea threat

WASHINGTON – North Korea conducted live-fire artillery drills and a U.S. guided-missile submarine arrived in South Korea on Tuesday, as the Trump administration prepared an extraordinary White House briefing for senators on the escalating nuclear threat.

rattled its saber all the same, with drills that served as a reminder of the threat it poses below the border to U.S.-allied South Korea.

San Diego schools take aim at Islamophobia

SAN DIEGO – One of the nation’s largest school districts has started a campaign against Islamophobia, drawing praise and criticism.

The San Diego Unified School District’s multiyear plan includes ensuring staff calendars include Muslim holidays, reviewing library materials on Muslim culture, providing resources to teachers and engaging in partnerships with the Council on American Islamic Relations.

The district also plans to consider high school clubs that promote American Muslim culture, create “safe spaces” for students and train staff about Muslim culture.

The district is reviewing internal staff calendars to make sure Muslim holidays are recognized.

A letter outlining plans will be sent to staff and parents of its 132,000 students. It’s expected to go out before Ramadan begins in late May. – Wire reports

GOP open to Trump’s tax plan despite deficit

WASHINGTON – Republicans who slammed the growing national debt under Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday that they are open to President Donald Trump’s tax plan, even though it could add trillions of dollars to the deficit over the next decade.

Trump is scheduled to unveil the broad outlines of a tax overhaul Wednesday that includes a massive cut in the corporate income tax, reducing the top rate from 35 percent to 15 percent. The plan will also include child-care benefits, a cause promoted by Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.

Echoing the White House, Republicans on Capitol Hill argued Tuesday that tax cuts would spur economic growth, reducing or even eliminating any drop in tax revenue.

“I’m not convinced that cutting taxes is necessarily going to blow a hole in the deficit,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Finance Committee.

“I actually believe it could stimulate the economy and get the economy moving,” Hatch added. “Now, whether 15 percent is the right figure or not, that’s a matter to be determined.”

The argument that tax cuts pay for themselves has been debunked by economists from across the political spectrum.

On Tuesday, the official scorekeeper for Congress dealt the argument – and Trump’s plan – another blow.

The nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation said Tuesday that a big cut in corporate taxes – even if it is temporary – would add to long-term budget deficits. This is a problem for Republicans because it means they would need Democratic support in the Senate to pass a tax overhaul that significantly cuts corporate taxes.

“Regretfully we don’t expect to have any Democratic involvement in” a tax overhaul, McConnell said. “So we’ll have to reach an agreement among ourselves.”

Democrats said they smell hypocrisy over the growing

national debt, which stands at nearly $20 trillion. For decades, Republican lawmakers railed against saddling future generations with trillions in debt.

But with Republicans controlling Congress and the White House, there is no appetite at either end of Pennsylvania Avenue to tackle the long-term drivers of debt – Social Security and Medicare.

Instead, Republicans are pushing for tax cuts and increased defense spending.

“I’m particularly struck by how some of this seems to be turning on its head Republican economic theory,” said Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said, “On a lot of fronts, both the administration and Republicans have been contradictory, to say the least.”

“There’s no question we should try to reduce (the corporate tax rate), but I don’t see how you pay for getting it down that low,” Casey said.

“Fifteen percent, that’s a huge hole if you can’t make the math work.”

The Trump administration on Tuesday stuck with its assertion that tax reform could push economic growth above 3 percent.

Fighting the opioid crisis America’s opioid crisis keeps getting worse.

More than 33,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses in 2015, the highest on record, and millions still abuse the drugs.

Efforts to control the epidemic abound, such as new national prescribing guidelines for doctors, more state drug courts and increased access to addiction treatment. But opioids are extraordinarily addictive, and the pattern of abuse is shifting: Many people who became hooked on prescription opioids go on to use heroin, or worse, illicit fentanyl, which is many times as potent. Fentanyl overdose, which can occur almost instantaneously when the drug is taken, is mainly what’s driving the death rate skyward.

So federal and state officials are trying increasingly tough approaches. In New Jersey, for example, a patient’s first course of opioids is now limited to five days (30 has been the norm) and the lowest effective dose. A similar bill in the U.S. Senate would limit first prescriptions to seven days. The Senate also is considering taxing prescription opioids to help pay for addiction-treatment services, as are lawmakers in Alaska and California.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control has launched an ad campaign to warn Americans about the risk of addiction. And Tom Price, the secretary of Health and Human Services, is promising to make it easier for the addicted to get treatment.

All these efforts are laudable, if piecemeal. But as the crisis expands, so must the response to it.

To this end, drug courts are putting addicted people who have been arrested for nonviolent crimes into treatment programs. The use of methadone and buprenorphine in treating addiction, now being expanded nationwide, has doubled success rates. And many states are now preventing deaths, especially from fentanyl overdose, by making the antidote naloxone available over the counter and putting it in the hands of police and others who are in a position to use it.

There also may be a place for more traditional law enforcement tactics. A Senate bill would outfit border police with chemical screening devices to help detect fentanyl being smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico and China.

Not all these strategies will work, so it’s important that states and the federal government assess them carefully. Ideally, the White House commission on opioid abuse and addiction, led by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, will make sure that the most effective policies are widely shared and adequately funded. America’s opioid epidemic is growing and changing, and it will take both ingenuity and determination to bring it under control.

Washington’s VA hospital is sick It did not take long for the inspector general of the Department of Veterans Affairs to figure out there was something seriously wrong with conditions at the VA medical center in Washington, D.C. He also quickly determined that senior VA officials had long been aware of some of the problems and so could not be trusted to fix them. That the inspector general issued a rare, urgent warning about the risks posed to patients underscores the deep-seated problems still confronting the department entrusted with taking care of the men and women who have fought for their country.

“We have not seen anything quite like this at a VA facility,” Inspector General Michael Missal said in issuing an interim report that found “serious and troubling deficiencies” at the Washington VA Medical Center. The comment was all

the more startling given the past mismanagement scandals that have scarred the VA. This time, independent watchdog investigators following up on a confidential March 21 tip found unsanitary conditions, medical supply shortages and inattention to safety recalls at the facility that provides medical care to almost 100,000 veterans across the Washington region. Detailed in the April 12 report were doctors forced to stop procedures and nurses frantically scrounging for supplies during emergencies.

Investigators did not identify any adverse patient outcomes; the review still is underway. The unusual release of an interim report – less than a month after the investigation began – was an indictment of the VA for its failures to address problems that were apparent as early as 2014.

Why those failures occurred and

whether anyone will be held accountable ought to be addressed as the inspector general’s office finishes its work and VA officials and Congress conduct their own reviews.

The quick reaction from Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin was encouraging.

He immediately relieved the facility’s director of his duties and installed one of his close advisers, Lawrence Connell, as acting director to make sure the problems were fixed. A broader review of the system to determine whether there are similar problems at other medical centers also is planned. “Honoring America’s Veterans with quality health care” is the promise billeted on the homepage of the D.C. medical center – and it is one that should not be broken to people who served their country.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts Times three weeks ago that detailed how Fox paid out about $13 million over the years to make multiple accusations of sexual harassment go away. An uproar ensued, and advertisers deserted his top-rated program by the dozens.

Small wonder. The accusations, which O’Reilly denies, read like a manual on how not to behave in a 21st-century workplace. O’Reilly is said to have made unwanted advances, tried to plant an unwanted kiss and backed up his demand for sexual favors by making threats or even taking action to blunt women’s careers.

One woman said he called her and described sexual fantasies involving her. She said it sounded as if he was masturbating.

This comes at a bad time for Fox. It’s been less than a year since chairman Roger Ailes left under a similar

cloud. But in showing O’Reilly the door, the network makes a strong statement that it has zero tolerance for acts of sexual harassment.

That become public and scare advertisers away.

Otherwise, Fox doesn’t seem to care all that much. What else can we infer when O’Reilly was there for two decades, and Fox repeatedly chose to paper over his alleged misdeeds rather than take action to curb his, ahem, enthusiasm? It’s like people there think it’s still 1968. Indeed, O’Reilly comes across like a guy who just wandered in from one of those old sitcoms where the lecherous boss is always chasing the secretary around the desk.

It was a reliable comic trope that felt harmless way back when. But then, no one ever asked the secretary how she felt about it.

Give or take a president or two, we men don’t behave that way anymore.

Or at least, we know we’re not supposed to. Last week’s events suggest that some of us have yet to learn.

On the day O’Reilly was fired, Gail in West Palm Beach researched real

estate for a potential buyer. Georgina in New Orleans chased down rats in a property she owns. Laura in Hood River, Oregon, prepared for breast cancer surgery. Lynn drove her semi from Seattle to Ontario, California.

In Tallahassee, Marty trimmed the shrubs.

In other words, women did what they do every day. They lived lives of challenge, routine, reward and, most important, volition beyond the entitlements of men.

Meanwhile, a man rich and powerful and beyond judgment – or so he surely thought – was finally held to answer for years of allegedly treating women like things. It was belated comeuppance, to be sure, but it was comeuppance just the same.

So it went Wednesday in America, the day Bill O’Reilly got fired. And you know something?

It was a pretty good day.

Anti-immigrant attitude ignores tide of history “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

– U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa SPRINGFIELD – Having spent most of my life living in the rural Midwest, I’ve become accustomed to hearing, “I have nothing against immigrants, just illegal immigration.”

Baloney.

Our nation’s anti-immigrant undercurrent is fueled by fear, mistrust and apprehension about “others.”

Look no further than Iowa Congressman Steve King’s statement, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

Doesn’t he realize we have always been a nation composed of “somebody else’s babies?”

I was particularly incensed by the congressman’s statement because I once lived in what is now his district.

But I have to admit King’s mindset reflects a too common viewpoint.

Like much of the rural Midwest, large immigrant populations can be found in meat-packing towns scattered

The meat-packing industry has long been an immigrant-centric endeavor.

In Upton Sinclair’s novel, “The Jungle,” the protagonist was a Lithuanian butchering cattle at the turn of the 20th century in Chicago.

Today, those jobs are more likely to be held by immigrants from Latin America, southeast Asia and Africa, and the work is more likely to be done in small towns.

Once homogenous small towns have become melting pots of various ethnicities.

Whether they have a visa in their hip pocket is really of little concern to those who complain about immigrants.

It will usually manifest itself with words like, “This town’s a changin’ – and not for the better.”

Of course, not everyone in small

towns thinks that way.

My late aunt, Barb Hamilton, lived in rural Schuyler County all her life.

When African immigrants began appearing in her small town to work in a nearby pork-processing plant, she volunteered to help find beds and other furnishings for them.

It didn’t matter to her that these were the first black faces the town of Rushville had seen for many years.

They were her neighbors, and she made them feel welcome.

As a teenager, I remember working on a hayrack with a fellow who complained about Mexicans coming to this country to take jobs away from fellows like him. When he wasn’t complaining about Mexicans, he was complaining about the hard work he had to do. Go figure.

Two of the best interns I have ever had, Jenny Lee and Karina Gonzalez, were children of immigrants. They knew how to work hard and took very little for granted.

And that has long been the story of this nation. Immigrants come take

jobs that native-born folks turn their noses up at. Their children work hard and achieve the American Dream. And the next generation is fully assimilated into the middle class.

Unfortunately, some politicians have taken to exploiting fears about immigrants to garner votes. The bottom line is that immigrants have long made this country stronger.

A path to citizenship needs to be offered to those who have come here illegally to support their families, and our nation needs to offer more legal immigration opportunities to those, particularly from Latin America, who want to come here.

And we need to be more understanding to those who are already here.

After all, wouldn’t you cross a river to feed your family?

On the day Bill O’Reilly was fired, Serena Williams announced she was 20 weeks’ pregnant.

Fans did the math and concluded Williams must have had a baby on board in January when she won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title in dominating fashion. That, TV tennis analyst Pam Shriver said, made Williams’ win “even more spectacular.”

That same day, director Ava DuVernay was basking in news that her documentary “13th” had won a prestigious Peabody Award. And Chrissy Metz, a star of the NBC hit, “This Is Us,” was receiving feedback on a video “letter” she posted online to her insecure teenage self. “Stop comparing yourself to anyone or anything,” she counseled. “We are all on our own journey.”

That day, in other words, women lived their unique lives. And Fox “News” sent O’Reilly packing for allegedly behaving as if they exist solely for his gratification.

O’Reilly, a pugnacious conservative who was the mightiest oak in the forest of cable news blowhards, was felled by a report in The New York

sports@daily-chronicle.com It was an eventful senior day for Allyson O’Herron. The Elburn native led Winona State to a doubleheader sweep of Minot State. In a 3-0 Game 1 win, she was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Winona State is 40-9 and 21-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Warriors are one game behind Minnesota State Mankato. On the season, O’Herron has a .293 batting average and 21 RBIs. Judson catcher Sarah Friedland was 1 for 4 with a run and three RBIs in a 9-5 win against St. Ambrose on Saturday. The DeKalb grad’s third homer of the season was the game winner in the top of the seventh.

Friedland is second on the Golden Eagles with a .395 batting average. She leads the team with 13 doubles and has 24 RBIs.

After eight hits in a four game series split with Truman State, Missouri-St. Louis junior Cooper Vinz batting average is at a season high.

The Sycamore and Kishwaukee product has a .362 batting average. He had four runs and five RBIs over the weekend as well. On the season, Vinz has seven doubles, a team-leading four home runs and 35 RBIs. He has only struck out 18 times in 152 at bats.

Augustana split a pair of games with Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday.

Hinckley-Big Rock grad Mitch Ruh was 2 for 5 with a run, RBI and walk in a 14-5 win in Game 1. The senior catcher was 1 for 2 with two walks in a 12-2 Game 2 loss. Augustana (24-9, 10-7 CCIW) plays the rubber game Wednesday at Illinois Wesleyan.

Ruh’s batting average is up to .321, he has three homers and a team leading 30 RBIs. Indian Creek alumnus Tim Sommerfeld had four starts in the last week at second base for Illinois College. The sophomore from Waterman was 1 for 4 with a run, RBI and stolen base in a 6-1 win against Lawrence on Sunday. He has a .236 batting average, five RBI and six steals on the season.

With a career-high seven strikeouts, Brady Huffman has settled into the Illinois State rotation. The freshman righty from Genoa-Kingston went 51/3 innings, scattered six hits, gave up two runs and posted the new strikeout

mark in a 9-4 win against Bradley on Saturday.

Huffman (3-2) has a staff leading 3.52 ERA and is second on the team with 38.1 innings pitched.

With a .339 batting average, freshman Jordan Wright is fourth in hitting for Columbia College. The Sycamore grad has six doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs for the Missouri school and is second on the team with 12 steals.

In a 7-4 win against Lyon on Monday, Wright started in left field and was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Austin Jacox has a .324 batting average for Elgin. The sophomore from Sycamore has eight doubles and 15 RBIs. Also on Elgin’s team is Kaneland grad Joe Laudont. In 18 games, he has a .286 batting average. The freshman catcher has three doubles, a homer and 10 RBIs. He’s thrown out eight of 25 runners on stolen base attempts.

MAPLE PARK – Tied with Kaneland after four, the Sycamore softball team fell late to the Knights, 5-1, on Tuesday.

At the end of the fourth inning Sycamore (5-11-1 overall, 2-6 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) found themselves in a tie game, 1-1, with one of the best teams in the conference. Kaneland (15-6, 5-1) came into the competition having defeated Sycamore previously. The last game between these two teams ended in a no-hitter pitched by Kaneland ace Aly Jesionowski.

Sycamore ended the chances of another no-hitter early in the game. Haley Trela, the Spartans’ leadoff hitter, got on base after singling on the fifth pitch. Amanda Swedberg laid down a sacrifice bunt, but after an error on the pitcher, made it safely to first. Faith Reynolds followed by hitting a deep sacrifice fly, which allowed Trela to score for the Spartans.

Kaneland, which is averaging just more than five runs per game, does not usually have trouble putting runs on the board. However, Sycamore’s starting pitcher Ally Versluys was able to pitch out of some difficult situations on the day.

After giving up a single on a bunt and then walking the another batter, Versluys gave up a single RBI to Hannah Theobald. The inning ended tied, 1-1.

“We had a slow start. [Versluys] took advantage of us and got into a rhythm. Then it is hard to get a pitcher out of their rhythm,” Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said.

In the fourth, the Knights offense challenged the Spartans a little more, but the inning ended leaving runners on second and third after some faulty base running.

In the fifth, however, after a pitching change for the Spartans, Kaneland managed to manufacture some runs.

They scored two in the fifth and another two in the sixth.

Contributing to the rally were Hailey Roach, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Theobald, who went 3 for 4 and added an RBI. “There are no moral victories but I have seen my girls get better and better each game. We have a six freshmen and sophomores. That is not an excuse, though,” Sycamore head coach Jill Carpenter said.

Both teams will play another game this week, with Sycamore headed to Genoa-Kingston on Wednesday and Kaneland headed to DeKalb.

Knights win on walk-off

jseverson@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – As the No. 9 hitter for the Kaneland baseball team, Luke Gomes has been causing headaches for Sycamore.

Gomes stayed perfect in the series and scored the game-winning run on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Luke Calabrese in the Knights’ 2-1 victory over the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon in Maple Park.

“I’m just seeing the ball really well right now, it’s nice out and I’m ready to play baseball,” said Gomes, who is 4 for 4 with a pair of walks in the two games against Sycamore this week.

With the game tied, 1-1, heading to the bottom of the seventh, Gomes led off the inning with an infield single on a routine ground ball to second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Jack Marshall, Gomes got to third base on a wild pitch by Sycamore relief pitcher Zach Carlsen. Facing a full count, Calabrese fouled off two pitches before hitting a sacrifice fly to left field.

Sycamore left fielder Derrick Crome made a diving catch on the play, but couldn’t catch Gomes at the plate.

It’s the second consecutive game that erratic pitching has hurt the Spartans (13-6 overall, 4-4 in Northern Illinois Big 12) in the seventh inning.

In a 3-2 win at Sycamore on Monday,

the Spartans allowed a passed ball to score the tying run in the top of the seventh.

“You don’t get away with that kind of stuff in a 1-1 game,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “Our inability to play defense, it’s really frustrating today. We made all kind of errors at second base and we didn’t make the play we should have made in the last inning and then it’s a good sacrifice bunt – we almost botched that – and then a wild pitch. It’s like, it’s not even close, then they get a bleeder to left that beats us.”

It’s also the second game in the series that the team with fewer hits ended up winning. While the Spartans won on Monday having just two hits, the Knights (11-8 overall, 5-2 in Northern Illinois Big 12) had just three hits on the day and got some help from three Sycamore errors.

In the bottom of the first, Marshall reached on an error, stole second base and got to third when the throw was off. Calabrese ended up bringing Marshall in on an RBI single.

In the first two games of the series, the Spartans have made seven errors.

“There’s a couple of guys who have lost a lot of confidence out there,” Cavanaugh said of the defensive woes.

Sycamore designated hitter Jack Mizgalski knotted the game up on a solo home run to left field in the top

of the fourth inning. The Spartans got a scoring chance in the top of the sixth – getting runners on first and third with nobody out – but couldn’t scratch together a run. Carlsen hit a hard ground ball to shortstop Marshall, who fired it home to catch Jarod Montavon for the first out. Mizgalski followed with a hard hit fly out to center field and James Marcinkowski grounded out to Kaneland third baseman Calabrese to end the inning.

“I knew (Carlsen’s ground ball) was going right to Jack, he’s got my back, I know he does,” said Kaneland’s left-handed starting pitcher Clark Hendricks, who picked up the win by allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk with 78 pitches.

“He’s one of the best shortstops I’ve seen. ... It’s crazy. The adrenaline was going, I was just pumped.”

By the numbers: For Sycamore, Logan Ryan went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, Carlsen and Jacob Cavanaugh added singles and Montavon hit a double to lead off the top of the sixth. Cavanaugh started on the mound for the Spartans, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks and also hit two batters. For Kaneland, Preston Havis hit a single and the Knights’ defense had two more double plays on the day – giving them four for the series.

Holland powers Spartans to win

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – In a clash between Northern Illinois Big 12 division leaders, Saydie Holland provided the offense and Maegan Schwartz brought the defense as East-leading Sycamore toppled West-leading Geneseo, 2-0, on Tuesday in Sycamore.

After a scoreless first half, Holland pushed a header into the goal at the 21:53 mark in the second half to give the Spartans all the offense they would need.

“We always practice finishing and challenging the keeper,” Holland said.

“The sun is obviously a factor. If it’s in your eyes, then it’s in their eyes, too, so you want to be there for any rebounds or just to get a touch on the ball.”

“You’re sticking your head in there and it’s a dangerous play when you’re mixing it up with the keeper, but she did a great job of getting a piece of it and putting it away,” Sycamore head coach David Lichamer said.

The Maple Leafs (10-2, 4-0) bombarded Sycamore goalkeeper Maegan Schwartz, but she turned back every shot, including six shots in the first half, to keep her team in the game until Holland finally broke through.

“Its nerve-wracking for sure,” Schwartz said. “It’s a lot of pressure, but you just have to focus.”

Keirah Meier added an insurance goal for the Spartans (11-1-3, 3-0) with 3:21 remaining in the game off a Holland pass past two Geneseo defenders.

“I’m very happy with the way we

played,” Geneseo coach Ian Kline said. “We just didn’t finish our opportunities in the first half and they did in the second half.”

Beyond the stats: Schwartz made a big save off of a free kick by Katelyn Mielke of Geneseo with 20:28 in the first half, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.

They said it: “I saw that she (Keirah Meier) was one-on-one if she just got the ball,” Holland said of her assist to Meier for the Spartans’ second goal.

“I just wanted to give her a touch that she could have a breakaway with. I know she’s faster than just about anyone and she can beat whoever she is up against.”

Up next: Sycamore travels to Yorkville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Geneseo hosts LaSalle-Peru at 4:30 p.m.

Barbs storm past Morris DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb softball had a big sixth inning and earned a 10-8 comeback win over Morris on Tuesday in DeKalb.

The Barbs (7-11 overall, 3-5 in Northern Illinois Big 12) jumped out to a big lead early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second – all coming with two outs.

Morris responded with five runs in the top of the fourth and took an 8-5 lead with three runs in the sixth. The Barbs answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Erin Karasewski had two hits and three RBIs, Jenna Levine had two hits and an RBI and Torrie Newport and Mackenzie Riggs each added RBIs in the victory. Newport got the win in the circle for the Barbs in relief.

The Barbs will host Kaneland at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Indian Creek blanks Hiawatha: The Timberwolves cruised to a 9-0 road win.

Siobhan and Mckenna gave us a good edge on the outside. They got off some really dangerous serves and we were able to capitalize on the other end.”

The Rams fired their coach after top overall pick Jared Goff flopped. They traded a first-round pick last year and this year, plus much more, to get him.

The Eagles, however, helped themselves by making a similar deal for another quarterback, No. 2 pick Carson Wentz.

History hasn’t been kind to those who move up to the third spot. In the last 16 years, the third pick has been dealt twice with disastrous results.

The Dolphins traded up to No. 3 to select defensive end Dion Jordan in 2013, and the Browns did the same to take running back Trent Richardson a year earlier.

They are two of the worst top-five picks of the last 10 years.

The Bears should hope that, against all odds, someone else wants to make a similar bet this year.

“The more analytics and different things are incorporated into the decision-making with teams, most teams are itching to trade down,” Palazzolo

said. “At some point, you’re going to run out of trade-up partners.”

The Bears should want to move down. Record depth at cornerback and tight end – two glaring needs – will drive general manager Ryan Pace to pursue extra Day 2 draft picks.

“At a certain point, from 10 to 50, you’re getting a similar player,” former Browns GM Phil Savage said.

That should keep other teams from aggressively moving up.

“That’s really where this draft stands apart from some of the years in the past: The second- and third-round picks really are gold this year just because there’s exceptional depth at a couple positions that are normally difficult to find,” CBS Sports analyst Rob Rang said.

“I think teams are going to be very loath to give those picks up to move up the four, five spots it might take to get their first choice as a player. If they can get their consolation prize, so to speak, by holding pat, why not do that?”

Hendricks outduels Cole

The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Kyle Hendricks rediscovered his 2016 form, limiting the Pittsburgh Pirates to four hits over six innings to outduel Gerrit Cole and led the Cubs to a 1-0 win on Tuesday night.

Hendricks (2-1) struck out two and walked three in easily his best start this year.

The struggling Pirates managed just four singles off Hendricks and didn’t reach third base until he was out of the game.

Wade Davis worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Cubs won for the sixth time in seven games.

Addison Russell doubled in the second off Cole (1-3) and scored when second baseman Alen Hanson airmailed first base on a Jason Heyward grounder, the Pirates’ major leaguehigh 20th error this season. They’ve also allowed 15 unearned runs, the most in the big leagues.

The miscue spoiled a terrific outing by Cole. He struck out eight without issuing a walk and retired 14 of his final 15 batters. It wasn’t enough for Pittsburgh, which has lost six of eight.

Hendricks became the first Cubs

pitcher in nearly 80 years to lead the majors in ERA last year (2.13) but entered at 6.19 after three lackluster starts.

It dropped to 4.50 after he spent six innings keeping the Pirates off balance with a steady diet of breaking balls and change-ups.

It was the second straight strong start for the defending World Series champions, who have spent the last week riding their offense to shake out of an early pitching funk.

The Cubs’ pitching did the heavy lifting while Cole dominated the highest-scoring team in the majors.

Russell’s double and a two-out infield hit by Kris Bryant in the sixth was all the Cubs managed against the Pittsburgh ace, who is hoping to put an injury-plagued 2016 behind him.

After giving up five runs in a loss to Boston on opening day, Cole has surrendered just seven runs over his last 25 innings, a 2.52 ERA. Pittsburgh had a chance to tie the score when John Jaso led off the seventh with a double against Koji Uehara.

Jaso advanced to third on a fly ball but was stranded when Hanson struck out and pinch-hitter Jose Osuna flied to center.

The Bears are open to trading down from the No. 3 spot in the NFL draft Thursday, but they likely will struggle to find a partner.

Call it the Noah’s Ark Effect.

The tier below Texas A&M edge rusher Myles Garrett, the presumptive top pick, features two safeties, LSU’s Jamal Adams and Ohio State’s Malik Hooker, and two 3-4-scheme defensive linemen, Alabama’s Jonathan Allen and Stanford’s Solomon Thomas.

“Why am I going to move up for Jamal Adams and give away a secondand a third-round pick if I can get Malik Hooker?” ESPN analyst Todd McShay said. “Why am I going to move up for Jonathan Allen or Solomon Thomas and give away a second- and thirdround pick when I can get the other guy? There’s just too many players in a similar grade area for teams to be willing to give up stuff to go move up.”

The Bears’ trade hopes could be saved by a ho-hum quarterback class, provided they don’t want to pick a passer at No. 3 themselves.

None of the top four quarterbacks – North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer – are considered a sure thing.

Still, a team with a glaring need could fall in love with one.

And teams aren’t likely to lump them together the way they do the top defensive players.

So if a team trades into the top five, it likely will be for a passer.

“Some people have Kizer at the top of their board, some have Trubisky, some have Watson, some have Mahomes,” Pro Football Focus’ Steve Palazzolo said. “I think you might actually start seeing more teams maneuvering to get their guy.”

Two teams did that last year, and one paid the price.

Holding up the Larry O’Brien Trophy on three occasions and 14 years of experience in the Association, well, it’s either be self-aware or be retired.

So of course Wade knows that his Bulls team needs one of those “Dwyane Wade moments’’ sooner than later in this playoff series with the top-seeded Celtics.

Especially since the momentum has been ripped from them, watching a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series now sitting tied at 2-2.

“I was just talking to coach [Fred Hoiberg] about that,’’ Wade said of his role moving forward. “Obviously with [Rajon] Rondo going down [with a fractured right thumb], the ball’s going to be a lot more in my hands. But I talked to coach about it, there were a couple opportunities where I could have been more aggressive. Some of it is on me, sometimes when I’m running the offense, I’m doing it. I’m passive.

“I come off and the first screen is a pick-and-roll, I get off of it, and it doesn’t come back. So I have to figure out a way to, certain times be more aggressive than I was last game. And I’ll figure it out. I’ve been playing a long time, so I’ll leave it up to myself to figure it out.’’

The veteran guard was averaging 34.3 minutes, 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game against Boston, while shooting 41 percent from the field.

His game-high in the series came in Game 2 when he scored 22 points.

Jimmy Butler is drawing from the Boston defense, the Bulls need one of those games Wade threw at Toronto in the Eastern Conference semi-finals last May. Wade put up 38 in Game 3 in that series, and then followed that up with 30 in Game 4.

The hope is now a year older, he can still “figure it out.’’

What Wade won’t get caught up in, and has been warning his teammates to stay away from, is the extracurricular activities that went on in Game 4.

Whether it was “shoe-gate’’ between Robin Lopez and Jae Crowder or the war of words between Butler and Marcus Smart, Wade told his teammates that extra drama just happens when you play the same team over and over.

“Those things are a part of basketball,’’ Wade said. “You’re playing those guys, you seeing them every other day, you get aggravated by the little things they do. And that’s all it is. At the end of the day the focus is on what it needs to be, and that’s basketball.

“The coaches play their games in the media and all these things, but we’re focused on the game of basketball. When you’re out there, it’s a physical sport, a testy sport. But at the end of the day you have two teams trying to win and doing whatever it takes.’’

The other warning Wade offered up to his teammates? Momentum is fragile, and takes very little to grab back.

“Obviously, the momentum points to Boston,’’ Wade said. “They’ve got two of the last three at home. But in the playoff series, especially the way it’s going each game is different.

“Let’s see how the slugfest goes.

It’s one of those weird series from the outside, but both teams have done what they need to do in the games that they’ve won, and that’s what it’s been all about.’’

McDonough: Performance against Nashville ‘unacceptable’

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – John McDonough wants to make one thing clear: The Blackhawks didn’t just lose their firstround series against the Nashville Predators. They were beaten. Badly.

“We were steamrolled,” McDonough told the Sun-Times on Tuesday. “Give Nashville credit. We can sit back here and say we’re angry and we’re frustrated and it’s unacceptable. But they beat us. They blew us out. We got beat four straight. And we scored in two of 13 periods. This wasn’t a fluke.”

And that makes it even more difficult to swallow. So add McDonough to the list of Hawks officials who are fuming over the sweep, who are taking precious little solace in the second 50-win

regular season in franchise history, and who see it as a mandate for change throughout the organization. And with McDonough’s old team, the Cubs, John McDonough seizing the championship spotlight and the citywide adoration that used to belong exclusively to the Hawks, there’s surely a sense of urgency to get back on top after two straight first-round exits.

“It’s certainly a wake-up call, for sure,” McDonough said of the sweep.

“And I’m not a sentimentalist. I don’t get caught reminiscing about three Stanley Cups or parades or anything like that.

It’s up to Stan [Bowman] and his staff to figure this out on the hockey side.”

Bowman followed up Monday’s firing of Joel Quenneville’s friend, confidante, and assistant coach Mike Kitchen by dismissing longtime Rockford IceHogs coach Ted Dent on Tuesday. Bowman still runs such moves by McDonough, but the Hawks president said Bowman has total autonomy to make those decisions, and McDonough fully supported them – and the man who made them.

Bowman was at the helm for all three Stanley Cups, and had his fingerprints all over the 2013 and 2015 championships, successfully navigating the salary cap and retooling around former GM Dale Tallon’s core. But he’s had more swings and misses than hits lately, with failed deadline acquisitions such as Andrew Ladd, Dale Weise, Tomas Fleischmann and Johnny Oduya yielding little results, some of them at

very high costs.

But McDonough has no plan to reorganize the front office. There will not be a president of hockey operations, or any other new position, overseeing Bowman.

“I’m very happy with the job that Stan has done, but I’m looking for improvement,” McDonough said.

“Improvement on the coaching side, improvement from my own perspective. I’m fortunate enough to work for the best owner in professional sports (Rocky Wirtz) and he has an obligation to assess my performance, and it hasn’t been good enough the last two years. I don’t think that anybody here at any given point is ever comfortable. But overall, if you’re asking me about the body of work of Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville, I think they’ve both done extraordinarily well.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. abruptly announced his retirement at the end of the season Tuesday, a decision that will cost NASCAR its most popular driver as the series scrambles to rebuild its fan base.

At a news conference, Earnhardt said he “wanted the opportunity to go out on his own terms.” After missing much of the 2016 season due to concussion-like symptoms, he acknowledged that time off played a role in his decision. He wanted retirement to be his choice rather than something that was decided for him.

“Having influence over my exit only became meaningful when it started to seem most unlikely,” Earnhardt said.

“As you know, I missed a few races last year and during that time I had to face the realization that my driving career may have already ended without me so much as getting a vote on the table.

Of course, in life we’re not promised a vote, and that’s especially true in racing.”

He informed Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick on March 29 of his plan to retire. Earnhardt said telling his boss of nearly 10 years was the toughest part of his decision.

Colorful, candid and talented, Earnhardt has been plagued by concussions the last several years and he missed half of last season recovering from a head injury. He had delayed contract talks on an extension to drive the No. 88 Chevrolet, and the two-time Daytona 500 winner will now call it quits when the season ends in November.

“You deserve everything, all the awards and accolades,” Hendrick said.

“There will never be another Dale Earnhardt Jr. You’re the one.”

The news shocked and saddened drivers throughout the paddock.

“Dale Jr. has had a huge impact on our sport – and you can see that every week with his legion of fans and Junior Nation,” Jeff Gordon said in a statement released by Fox Sports, where he now works as an analyst after spending much of last season filling in for the injured Earnhardt. “He has a tremendous sense of the history of NASCAR and, while he shares his father’s name, Dale has made a name for himself with his accomplishments in racing.”

A third-generation racer, Earnhardt turns 43 in October, is newly married and has said he wants to start a family.

He has lately become a vocal advocate for research into sports-related brain injuries, and the hit he took last June led to months of rehabilitation that

The news was the latest blow to the stock car series, which lost two other popular drivers in Gordon and Tony Stewart to retirement the past two years. Now Earnhardt, the last of the true country boys, is following them out the door. Born and raised in North Carolina, Earnhardt has deep roots in NASCAR. His late Hall of Fame father, Dale, won seven titles and, known as “The Intimidator,” was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history.

Earnhardt’s grandfather, Ralph, ran 51 races at NASCAR’s highest level.

Earnhardt has won NASCAR’s most popular driver award a record 14 times.

He has 26 career Cup victories and is a two-time champion of NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity series, where he plans to race twice next year. But the son of the late champion has never won a Cup title. Now in his 18th full-time season at the Cup level, he made his 600th career series start earlier this year.

Earnhardt has driven for Hendrick since 2008 after a nasty split with Dale Earnhardt Inc., the team founded by his father but run by his stepmother.

After the Washington Capitals lost a double-overtime heartbreaker in the first round, Brooks Orpik just wanted to eat some food and go home to sleep.

A playoff veteran, Orpik knew it would be better to get another workout in and take care of his 36-year-old body before leaving the arena.

“You get mentally fatigued, as well, the longer you play,” Orpik said. “Sometimes that can have a carry-over, I think. Everybody’s in such good shape physically I think you can get through it. I think the mental effect is probably a little bit bigger.”

Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher likes to say that rest is a weapon, and it certainly applies to handling the aftermath of overtime hockey. And there has been a lot of that so far in the 2017 postseason.

The effects will vary drastically, from teams like the Capitals and Senators that have played more than 40 extra minutes to the Nashville Predators and Anaheim Ducks, which finished off their opponents in sweeps.

Hockey players live for this time of year, so being physically fresh isn’t the problem. Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson played 182:23 with two microfractures in his foot and Washington’s Braden Holtby saw the most shots and spent the most time on the ice of any goaltender in the first round, and they’re ready to roll.

Capitals teammate Matt Niskanen, who played a team-high 156:31 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, also brushed off the avalanche of overtime games with a wry smile.

Mushrooms top Meatless Mondays

Mushroom and Cheese Burritos are a delicious vegetarian dish hearty enough to satisfy even the most die-hard carnivore in your family: a burrito stuffed with portobello mushrooms, chiles and cheese. It’s perfect for Meatless Mondays and – bonus! – all the ingredients are cooked together in a single rimmed sheet pan, which means cleanup is a snap.

Those steaklike portobellos are the ingredient around which this recipe is built. Prepping them is a two-step process. First, clean the caps by wiping them with a wet paper towel. Second, use a spoon (a grapefruit spoon is best, if you have one) to scrape out the gills on the underside of the caps. (They become soggy when cooked and stain everything black.)

Watery as they are, mushrooms nonetheless soak up additional liquid like a sponge. In this case, the flavorings are lime juice, minced garlic and cumin, all of which are absorbed by the portobellos while the rest of the vegetables are being broiled.

First in the sheet pan is the poblano.

You want to brown it lightly on all sides, which makes it easy to peel off its tough skin. Then the onion, garlic and cherry tomatoes are broiled until slightly charred and tender. I chose cherry

tomatoes because they may be small, but they boast the most tomato-y flavor when the big guys aren’t yet in season.

All of these supporting vegetables are quickly chopped in a food processor while the mushrooms take their turn in the oven. The last step is to stir together all the veggies and wrap them in the tortillas.

I like to add sharp cheddar cheese to this recipe, but if your crowd is vegan, leave it out.

Mushroom and Cheese Burritos Start to finish: 1 hour 20 minutes Servings: 6

My mom was a wannabe urban farmer long before it was cool. Living in the city limits didn’t stop us from growing our own veggies in a backyard garden that flanked a huge handmade chicken coop, where we raised hens for eggs.

Today, raising your own food is trendy, but back then we did it because it was cheap. As a kid, I remember being sent to the backyard to grab a snack. I’d forgo the plethora of fuzzy zucchini, and grab either a tomato or orange. Biting into a sun-warmed fruit, laced with just the tiniest bit of clinging dirt, sweet juice dripping down my chin in the dry heat of Tucson, Arizona, is a memory stuck in my bones.

No surprise oranges and tomatoes were interchangeable snacks, both of them sweet, acidic and juicy.

Turns out, oranges and tomatoes are worthy swaps for each other in a host of raw recipes.

So if you are out of tomatoes, or they are simply out of season, consider using oranges instead, tasty yearround. The additional sweetness is a welcome twist in most recipes, but if you want a less sweet option, use grapefruit, or a combination of cucumber and oranges instead.

Orange and Cucumber Layered Salad with Shrimp Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 2

25 Altrusa Scholarship given at Kish Awards Day Kishwaukee College students were recognized for their achievements at the college’s Awards Day on April 11. Several scholarships were awarded, including the Altrusa International Scholarship. Altrusa International of DeKalb/Sycamore is a service club whose members include women from various professions. 28 Large dose of B12 can provide burst of energy Dear Doctor: I’m almost 90 years old and always tired. I took two capsules of 2,000 mcg vitamin B12 the other night, and felt stronger and not as tired. Is it safe?

Dear Reader: My first thought is you might have B12 deficiency, caused either by inadequate intake or by inadequate absorption of B12.

Animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs are the only sources of B12 in humans, and the recommended daily allowance is 2.4 micrograms a day.

The average intake of an individual in the United States is about 3.4 micrograms a day, but if you follow a vegan diet, you obviously lack sources of B12. Thanks to evolution, one-half of your B12 intake is stored in your liver, and it takes many years for this to be depleted.

If your intake is sufficient, it may be your ability to absorb B12 that is compromised. This can occur if you have inflammation of your stomach lining or disorders of the small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid, Aciphex, Zantac and Pepcid also can lead to deficiency, because they reduce the stomach acid necessary to release the B12 from food. Metformin, a drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes, also can decrease absorption of B12 in the small intestine in 10 percent to 30 percent of patients.

Lastly, age can be a risk factor for B12 deficiency. Multiple studies in this and in other countries have found deficiency in 10 percent to 24 percent of people 75 and older.

The causes may be both inadequate intake and inadequate absorption. Significant B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, nerve damage and dementia.

But let us say your B12 levels are normal. Is there any benefit to taking more, and is there any danger in doing so? Many

I am not certain why this happens, and it doesn’t appear to have a lasting effect. It is possible extra amounts of B12 can improve the metabolic function and allow the vitamin to be utilized better.

Water soluble vitamins, such as B12, can be tolerated at higher doses without adverse effects upon the body, and the National Academy of Medicine has not established an upper limit of vitamin B12 intake. The dose of 2,000 micrograms of B12 is more than 800 times the recommended daily amount. So, on the face of it, this dose seems too high, but as you increase the amount in your diet, less of a percentage will be absorbed.

Before continuing the B12, I would recommend getting your levels tested with your doctor. If you show a deficiency, your doctor may want to investigate and gauge how much of the vitamin you might need.

If you are not deficient, I believe it is safe to take a supplement at a lower dose; you don’t even have to take it every day because B12 is well-stored by the body. Further, if you want to ensure better absorption of B12, you can try preparations that can be absorbed under the tongue. The important thing is to investigate why this B12 dose had such an impact – and how you can safely replicate the effects.

DEAR ABBY been married almost four years.

Jeanne My husband and Phillips I are both barely 40, still quite young, but we have sex only once or twice a month. Our relationship is great, and we love each other. I just wish we had sex more often.

I’ve told him I would like more, but it stays the same.

When we talked about past relationships, he mentioned women hounding him to have sex, so I don’t think it’s me. I don’t want to cheat, but I’m afraid I eventually will if my needs are not met. I don’t want to leave him, but I don’t want an almost sexless marriage.

He’s a very masculine man, so I don’t know how to ask him to go to the doctor to get something to increase his sex drive. Should I do that? If marital aids would help you, by all means get some. You also should have a frank talk with your husband and suggest he consult his physician about the discrepancy in your sex drives.

Dear Abby: I just stumbled upon my daughter-in-law’s Twitter account. She has posted half-naked pictures, talked about all the drinks she was consuming, and said if she didn’t have a child, she’d be gone. The language she used would make a sailor blush.

I baby-sit for her, and I was shocked, to say the least. I foolishly posted a shocked cat on Facebook, stating “this is me reading your Twitter account.”

My son is now upset with me that I read her Twitter posts. I am not sure he had seen them. I saved them on my computer, which he picked up when he was here and ran through my history.

I know I didn’t handle this the right way, but she was saying she starts drinking at 7 a.m., and that “moonshine wasn’t working anymore.” I am truly concerned about the baby. What can I do to repair this situation? –

SAT 9-3 & SUN 10-2 Every now and then, one of my students does something especially meritorious. I used this deal in a class last month. How should the play go in four spades after the defenders take two heart tricks, then shift, say, to a diamond? If South misplays the trump suit, is there a way to recover with this layout?

With that North hand, I would have raised to three no-trump, thinking the heart king would bolster that suit. Here, though, that would have worked poorly, East-West taking the first five tricks in the suit.

In four spades, declarer has three side-suit losers: two hearts and one diamond. He must play the trump suit without loss. East needs to hold the spade king. But it might be necessary to take the trump finesse three times. This requires staying on the board for as long as possible.

If you wish to keep repeating a finesse, first lead the lowest card that will hold the trick if the finesse is successful. Here, after ruffing a heart on the board, declarer should start with dummy’s nine. When that finesse works, South continues with dummy’s queen. Now East cannot win. Declarer takes four spades, two diamonds, three clubs and a heart ruff in the dummy.

Etsie Bailey of Hobe Sound, Florida (who is 95, but you’d never guess), first ran dummy’s queen, playing the four from hand. The second round of spades went to her jack, but West discarded a heart. Unfazed, Etsie cashed her top clubs and diamonds, then, at trick 11, led her diamond six. East had to win and lead away from the spade king-six.

The class gave her a round of applause.
